Not every child enjoys organized sports. Not every child enjoys being on a team. You know what?

That’s okay. I’ve worked with many young girls and boys who wouldn’t fit in to the “athletic” category. Could it be they just would rather work on their own?

Working out in a gym may be exactly where they belong. The great thing is you don’t need to be athletic to be successful in the weight room.

Participating in group sports may not be where your child fits in. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. For those who tend to be introverted, working out in a gym

seems to be a happy medium.

There’s more freedom to do be active on your own time. There’s no pressure to score goals or be the fastest. The only person you’re really competing with is yourself.

The most important thing to remember is that being active encourages healthy self esteem and self confidence. Every child needs to be encouraged to do what they love.

I realized some kids who genuinely enjoy playing sports but aren’t necessarily the most skilled were being left out. I’d rather your child enjoy a sport rather than have it be about

competition. Those you may label “un-athletic” or “introverted” I’ve seen be very successful in the weight room. Why? There is no competition to fit in or be something they are not. Some are simply happier working on their own.

My youngest client is eleven.

Every time we work together, she comes up with new ideas and new exercises. “Let me show an idea I have.” It makes me happy to see a kid who is excited about exercise. That’s how every kid should feel. After all, isn’t that more important?

TEAM OF THE MONTH CONGRATULATIONS

Oshawa Minor Generals Atom AE and Bantam A Wolves Atom AE Wins Montreal Can/Am Tournament The Oshawa Minor Generals ATOM AE Team travelled to Montreal, Quebec on November 4th to 6th to participate in the Can/Am Hockey Youth Challenge Cup, with hopes riding high after some recent solid efforts in their last few league games.

Friday morning started with a great effort against a hard skating Toronto team which ended in a 7-0 Oshawa victory. On Friday afternoon, Oshawa faced a physical Newmarket Redmen team and came up just short, losing by a score of 2 to 1.

Saturday had Oshawa playing the Markham Waxers, where a win was necessary to get them into the gold medal championship. The ATOM AE team came from behind to earn a hard fought 3-2 victory to move on to the gold medal game on Sunday - and a rematch with Newmarket.

In front of very loud and supportive (and nervous) family and friends, Oshawa came out against New-

market with some of its best energy all season.

First behind 1 to 0, and later 2 to 1, Oshawa scored two goals in the third period and held on to capture the tournament championship. Thanks to the team’s spectacular goaltending, shut down defence, and timely goals from its hard working group of forwards, Oshawa Minor ATOM AE brought home the championship plaque.

A proud coaching staff thanks the boys for all their hard work, and the super fans for all their support.

A great weekend for the team!

Bantam A Wolves Win Gold in Waterloo After a great 3 wins and 0 losses in the round robin the Wolves showed everyone they hadn’t seen anything yet by outscoring the opposition 11-4 over the final 3 playoff games including a decisive 5-3 victory in the finals. Congrats to all the players for winning the well deserved gold medal.

NORTH DURHAM MINOR HOCKEY SELECTS ITS NICKNAME Written by Simon Streeter

DURHAM GLOVE REPAIR Contact durhamgloverepair@gmail.com for expert baseball glove repair When players take to the ice for the inaugural 20172018 season, it will be the dawn of a new era for minor hockey in Port Perry and Uxbridge as we become the North Durham Minor Hockey Association.

One of our first priorities has been to solicit nickname suggestions from the Port Perry Minor Hockey and Uxbridge Minor Hockey memberships. Results were narrowed down to the Top 7 choices with 1) Brigade, 2) Warriors, 3) Stealth, 4) Surge, 5) Nitro, 6) Ridge Hawks and 7) Timber Wolves competing in the final round of voting.

In the end, the North Durham Warriors were chosen, acquiring 37% of the vote from our memberships.

The following is the voting breakdown: Warriors 37%, Timber Wolves 21%, Ridge Hawks 20%, Nitro 9%, Stealth 6% and Brigade 5%.

THE OSHAWA GENERALS ARE ONE OF THE OLDEST AND MOST DECORATED FRANCHISES

The Oshawa Generals are one of the oldest and most decorated franchises in the Canadian Hockey League (CHL), and the oldest in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). In their 78-year history, the Generals have won the J. Ross Robertson Cup, which is awarded to the OHL Champions, a record of 13 times. In addition, they’ve been crowned Memorial Cup Champions five times; the most of any current active CHL team.

The organization is also known for their ability to develop junior hockey players into professional players. To date, the Generals have over 180 graduates to the National Hockey League (NHL), which is just second to the Peterborough Petes.

The Oshawa Generals started out playing at the Hambly Arena, also known as the Oshawa Arena, from 1937 to 1953. They won three Memorial Cups during their time at the Hambly Arena, in 1939, 1940 and 1944. Following a devastating fire that burned the entire arena, the Generals were forced to relocate. They moved from playing in Bowmanville as a Senior B team, to relocating to Whitby to form the Whitby Dunlops, and then spent a season playing in Maple Leaf Gardens while the new arena was being built.

The Generals played back in Bowmanville the season before the new arena was ready, which is when a young kid by the name of Bobby Orr joined the roster.

Finally, after relocating multiple times, the Generals made the

big move into their new home, the Oshawa Civic Auditorium, on December 15, 1964. The team called the Auditorium home for over 40 years before moving to their current facility, the General Motors Centre (GM Centre), which seats 6,000 and features two ice pads. The Generals played their first game at the GM Centre on November 6, 2006.

There have been many notable names to put on a Generals’ jersey over the years. Recognized players and an outstanding track record are what make this organization’s history strong.

With seven consecutive Ontario titles including three Memorial Cups, it’s fair to say the Generals dominated junior hockey in Ontario in the late 1930’s until the mid-1940’s. The legendary Billy Taylor, considered one of the greatest players during that era, was a member of those teams.

Along with Taylor, players such as Floyd “Busher” Curry, Bill Ezinicki and Albert “Red” Tilson were also on the Generals’ roster during the early 40’s. Tilson is one of the more recognized names with his name now immortalized on the Red Tilson trophy, which is awarded to the OHL’s Most Valuable Player each year. Tilson was the league’s leading scorer in 1942-43 and died during combat in World War II. In November 2006, he became the first Generals player to have his number retired and lifted to the rafters at the General Motors Centre.

The next huge name to put on

a Generals jersey is one of the hockey’s most elite and historic players — Bobby Orr. The Parry Sound native was recognized at the age of 14 and spent four seasons with the Generals from 1962-1966, which included leading his team to an OHL Championship in his final season. His explosive offensive style made him an instant sensation in Oshawa and he went on to have a successful NHL career with the Boston Bruins, becoming one of the greatest defensemen in hockey history.

In four seasons as a General, he compiled 278 points in 194 games while playing most of that time against players several years older. In November 2008, the always humble Orr had his number retired at the GM Centre, to honour this great General.

In the 1970s, Generals fans had many NHL teams to cheer for as alumni including Rick Middleton, Lee Fogolin, Rick Lanz, Tom McCarthy, Dale Tallon, Rick St. Croix, and Greg Malone all played their junior careers in Oshawa.

The 1980s saw two OHL championship teams in Oshawa with teams that included NHLers like Tony Tanti, Dave Andreychuk, John MacLean, Mike Craig, Jeff Hackett, Joe Cirella, Jeff Daniels, and Jarrod Skalde. Local hero Scotty McCrory also won an MVP award here. In 1989, a young Eric Lindros entered his rookie year with the Generals, scoring 17 goals and 19 assists in just 25 games.

With 18 goals and 18 assists in 17 playoffs, Lindros led the Generals to their fourth Memorial Cup Championship in 1990. Lindros’ number was retired in March of 2008 to recognize his impressive junior career and time with the Generals.

The next major hockey phenomenon to put on a Generals jersey was Marc Savard. He began his OHL career in the 1993-94 season and eventually guided the Gens to their 12th OHL Championship. With 413 (281 goals, 132 assists) in 238 games, Savard is

one of the most memorable Gennies.

In 2005, the Oshawa Generals drafted 14-year-old John Tavares with the first overall pick in the OHL Priority Selection. Tavares is the first player to be granted exceptional status in the OHL. In 2009, he broke the OHL record for the most individual goals with 215 in four seasons in the league. His number 91 was retired on Sunday, Sept. 28 in front of a sold-out crowd.

Over the last few years, the Generals have managed to be a competitive team in the Eastern Conference and East Division, while making the playoffs in 2010 through 2014. With 1997 being the last OHL Championship and 1990 being the last time the Memorial Cup came back to Oshawa, Gens staff, fans and players were eager for a big year. The Gens went unnoticed and overlooked for most of the 2014-15 season, despite their size and skill on the roster. The roster included veteran players like Cole Cassels, Hunter Smith, Josh Brown, and top prospects like Michael Dal Colle and Tobias Lindberg, combined with some big trades at the deadline with Mike McCarron, Dakota Mermis, Brent Pedersen and Matt Mistele. Coach DJ Smith instilled a defensive style of play that made it tough for other teams to compete against. Following their 13th OHL Championship win over the Erie Otters, the Generals competed in the 2015 MasterCard Memorial Cup where they won four straight games to be crowned champions for the fifth time in franchise history. With five Memorial Cup Championships, 13 OHL Championships and a long list of NHL graduates and stars, the Oshawa Generals are one of junior hockey’s oldest and most prominent clubs.

The saying, “Once a General, always a General” is true and goes for every player who has ever been a part of this franchise.

GARBATT BOUNCES BACK FROM MAJOR INJURY Written by and photo by Sabrina Foresta

Born and raised in Niagara Falls Ontario, former Pro Boxer turned Pro MMA athlete Lindsay Garbatt better known as Garbs by her friends and teammates stepped into the cage for the first time in a year after having undergone ACL reconstruction. It came as no surprise that during her time recovering, Lindsay would do anything and everything she could do to make her comeback an unforgettable one. Trust me when I say, she dedicates herself to the sport and I know this first hand because I am fortunate enough to live and train with her.

Her comeback was a special one indeed. Eager to make her statement in her 5th professional MMA fight, Lindsay alongside her coach Justin Bruckmann received the phone call they've been waiting for. Canada's premier MMA organization TKO was making a comeback of their own and wanting #teamgarbs to be a part of it. Naming this event TKO Resurrection couldn't be more fitting. It was with TKO back in 2002 that Justin fought George St. Pierre, naming Justin to be one of the pioneers of fighting, so it was pretty evident that this

event touched the hearts of both Justin and Lindsay. “The Greatest Man That Ever Lived� by Weezer started to play and the arena erupted as she made her way to cage. By the time she stepped into the cage the floor was vibrating. Her family and friends were in the house and making their presence fully known. This was a special moment for both Lindsay and her supporters because she typically fights away from home.

Lindsay and her opponents first round was back and fourth both girls giving and receiving hard exchanges, Lindsay landing a takedown at the end. After making some adjustments, Lindsay dominated the second and third round ending the fight with a sweet ground and pound TKO finish. During the TKO press conference later that night it was announced that both her and opponents fight won them Fight of the Night. And that it was. She now looks forward to getting back to the grind and prepares herself for upcoming fight in January.

WINTER BLUES WITH DURHAM NATURAL HEALTH Twin sisters, Dr. Nicole Sandilands ND and Dr. Natalie McCulloch ND are naturopathic doctors and owners of Durham Natural Health Centre a multidisciplinary clinic located in Pickering. They are passionate about health and wellness and are thriving to change the health of our community one family at a time.

The change of season brings with it lots of exciting new activities for families to enjoy. Many kids will start back into hockey, figure skating or ringette and some families may fill their time with skiing or snowboarding, however for some the excitement is short lived.

Many people start to notice their moods shifting with the change in seasons. Fatigue, sluggishness, irritability, depressed moods and a sense of helplessness are just a few of the symptoms that may arise for some this time of year.

These symptoms may be due to seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

SAD is a subtype of depression, that unlike major depression, the symptoms come and go at the same time each year leaving many to feel great during the spring and summer months and start to see things decline in the fall and winter. SAD appears to occur more commonly in women and in those that live farthest from the equator, meaning that Canadian women tend to be at an increased risk of developing SAD. Experts are not 100% sure what exactly causes SAD but a decrease in sunlight appears to be at play. The drop in

light causes a change in our circadian rhythm (our biological clock) and a drop in serotonin, our feel good brain chemical. The combination of disturbed sleep/wake cycles and altered serotonin levels appears to set the stage for SAD to develop.

So what can be done to treat this? For those that experience these symptoms every year, the end of summer often brings a sense of dismay. But the good news is, there are things that have been shown to help prevent you from developing the symptoms or if the symptoms have already started, there are things that can be done to help! Here are some of our favourites: Light therapy: Getting 20-30 minutes of light exposure from a light box is one of the most effective therapies available for SAD. Exposure to artificial light during the fall and winter appears to improve symptoms by creating more sun exposure during the difficult months.

Exercise: 30 minutes of aerobic exercise has been shown to increase serotonin levels, a key chemical involved in SAD. Regular exercise can help to keep those levels boosted- so why not get outside and get active!

Vitamin D: The lack of sunlight also means that we are not getting as much vitamin D as we do during the spring and summer months. A decrease in our body’s vitamin D stores has been

thought to play a role in the development of SAD. Taking a vitamin D supplement can help, but how much do you need? Vitamin D can store in our body so the best way to know exactly how much you need is to have your levels checked in your blood.

Each person’s vitamin D requirements are different and knowing your current status is the best way to help us determine exactly how much you need.

St johns wort: This herb has many uses, but it is probably best known for it’s ability to raise serotonin levels making it an excellent fit for SAD. This herb has many drug interactions so it should only be used after you’ve consulted with your health care provider.

Talk about it: Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a form of psychotherapy that can help you to work through your emotions and can give you some valuable strategies to help retrain your thought patterns in a healthy, positive way. For many, the addition of some form of talk therapy is a very valuable part of their treatment plan.

As with any intervention, consistency is key! It is best to try to do these things daily to see the most benefit. If SAD is something that affects you- give some of these a try and if you need a little more assistance, feel free to contact us today, we’d love to help!

TESTOSTERONE - THE SECRET FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH

Testosterone is that hormone you think of when you see a muscle-bound man flexing a carved physique. Think 6 pack... no, 12 pack! The hormone of “men”, testosterone plays a very important role in both male and female health.

Made from cholesterol (yep, the good kind) in male and female sex organs, testosterone levels increase towards puberty and peak in the 20’s before beginning to decline again by the 30’s.

LADIES FIRST...

Testosterone is important in the conversion of body fat to muscle (hence the 6-12 packs), however, it is also important for bone formation and to help prevent osteoporosis in both men and women.

Women can benefit from slightly higher levels of testosterone in their mid-life as it can help keep weight off and contributes to muscle mass. It helps to improve libido and improves mood, strength, stamina and endurance. Adequate levels of testosterone for women also helps to protect the cardiovascular system. Some studies are now suggesting that adequate levels of testosterone can possibly protect women from breast cancers. Using birth control pills can actually lower a woman’s levels of testosterone as does a sedentary lifestyle and a higher presence of abdominal fat. Adequate levels of

testosterone in women can improve the appearance of skin and helps to combat and deal with stress. Testosterone in women helps with relaxation and a more positive outlook. While men can make up to 10 times more testosterone than women, it is obviously a very important hormone for women as well.

GENTLEMAN, START YOUR ENGINES! Testosterone cannot be understated in men. As estrogen is to women, testosterone is to men.

Testosterone is not just a libido hormone for men, as it plays a role in his body fat-muscle conversion, helps prevent osteoporosis, helps with critical thinking and decision making, improves mood, focus, attention, energy and stamina, helps to keep blood vessels clear and helps with reflex response. It helps stimulate sperm production and red blood cell formation. It helps to regulate mood, emotions and stress adaptation in men. It actually increases confidence and is an “encouraging” hormone for men.

Low testosterone is linked to obesity, lowered fertility, depression, erectile dysfunction and diabetes as well as cardiovascular disease in men. Adequate testosterone plays an important role in cardiovascular health and liver function in men and women.

Low zinc and zinc deficiency is linked to lower levels of testosterone in both males and females. A vegetarian diet can be deficient in adequate zinc, and so it is wise to consider zinc supplementation and foods higher in zinc if you are a vegetarian. Exercise — specifically muscle toning and condi-

tioning, muscle pulling on bone, and weight training all increase testosterone naturally in both sexes. Testosterone production requires adequate, but not excessive protein consumption combined with good fats. A diet high in sugars, refined carbs and low in adequate protein can result in lowered testosterone production.

Spikes in blood sugar levels can also reduce testosterone. A very high protein diet is actually linked to lower testosterone, so if you are considering building muscle, include some quality carbs such as wild rices, oats and ancient grains to help keep glucose levels stabilized to produce enough precursors (other hormones) necessary for testosterone production.

A balanced diet of lean quality protein, nuts and seeds (full of zinc), legumes, fresh fruits and vegetables and quality fats like olive, coconut and avocado are excellent for boosting and maintaining this secret fountain of youth for both men and women.

UOIT wins first OUA championship

LONDON, Ont. – For the first time ever – UOIT has won an Ontario University Athletics (OUA) championship.

The women’s soccer program defeated the Queen’s Gaels 1-0 on Sunday, Nov. 6 at Mustangs Field in London to claim both the program and school’s first OUA banner.

“It’s a pretty indescribable feeling to be honest – I’m extremely proud of the girls and the way they played over the weekend and throughout the season,” said UOIT manager of intercollegiate athletics Scott Barker. “The first OUA banner and championship in UOIT history and I can’t think of a more deserving team than the women’s soccer program for what they’ve done over the last five years.”

In the 22nd minute OUA all-star Taijah Henderson (Ajax, Ont.) scored the lone goal of the match, outmuscling the Queen’s defender to earn a breakaway and tuck the ball in the bottom left corner of the net under Madison Tyrell (White Rock, B.C.).

The Ridgeback defence was strong throughout the game, but the defending champion Queen’s Gaels did string together numerous second half opportunities – including a shot off the crossbar late in the match.

Tyrell finished the game with four saves, while UOIT keeper and OUA all-star Helen Frampton (Toronto, Ont.) made two stops in the match.

“I – I was just emotional, obviously some tears and I wanted to go congratulate the other coach for what they’ve done, but I knew I had to come back and celebrate with the girls and enjoy it with the girls,” said UOIT head coach Peyvand Mossavat. “The last five years

building the program hasn’t been easy, but you feel like everything you’ve done, it some how summed up to this.”

The Ridgebacks best finish in their program’s five-year history prior to Sunday was a bronze medal at the 2014 championship in Hamilton.

“It’s surreal – I kind of had to pinch myself a couple times, but it’s probably the best feeling I’ve ever had,” said fifth-year defender Jamie Ryan (Ottawa, Ont.).

After the game UOIT captain Kylie Bordeleau (Cambridge, Ont.) was named the Porter Airlines player of the game.

“I can’t (describe it), I don’t think that I’ve taken it in, but I can’t put it into words,” said Bordeleau. “It feels overwhelming and amazing and I’m overwhelmed with pride for my team.”

Both teams advanced to the U Sports (CIS) women’s soccer championship at Acadia University from Nov. 10-13.

ATHLETES OF THE MONTH Female Athlete: Lindsay Panchan

Panchan scores 800th career point in a Lords loss Durham Lords opening game, in the second half Lindsay Panchan (Ajax, Ont.) got in her usual rhythm, scoring 15 of her game-high 23 points in the third and fourth quarters. Panchan led the Lords with a double-double, putting up 26 points and 10 boards in their second game of the year, a 69-62 win over the Seneca Sting. The Durham College women's basketball team had their four-game win streak come to an end as the St. Lawrence Vikings earned an 83-69 victory in Kingston Friday night.

The Lords defeated the Georgian Grizzlies 70-39 to start the season 3-0. Panchan was her usual self, dropping 23 points to lead Durham's offence – alongside a gamehigh six rebounds. Despite the loss vs the St Lawrence Vikings, Panchan drained a season-high 31 points as she was 14-for-19 from the field to go along with six rebounds and five assists. It was a milestone night for Panchan as she now has 800 career points with the Lords. She becomes the fifth Lord to accomplish this feat.

Male Athlete: Luke Gavin Brendan O'Neill (Ilderton, Ont.) made 44 saves and the UOIT men's hockey team scored three goals in a row to beat Guelph 3-1. O’Neil is in his 3rd year Criminology & Justice Studies previously played for North Bay in the Ontario Hockey League.

O'Neill, who is 5-1 on the season, rebounded nicely after allowing seven goals against the Lakehead Thunderwolves one week prior. The third-year netminder is posting career highs this season with a 2.39 goals against average and .931 save percentage.

Our 2016 Winter Program registration dates are on the following dates: Thursday Nov 19, Nov 26, Dec. 3 from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM at Oshawa civic fieldhouse Field D. We are a recreational noncontact lacrosse league for all skill levels from ages of 15 and up. Our mission is to provide a fun, safe and healthy environment for all skill levels from field and box to enjoy the game of lacrosse.

Our membership includes all

skill levels from Beginner and Intermediate to Alumni Players from the NCAA, CUFLA, JR"A", JR "B", JR"C", SR "A", SR "B" and Masters Clubs. Our teams include the Whitby Warriors, Brooklin Redmen, Brooklin Merchants, Clarington Green Gaels, Clarington Shamrox, Markham Ironheads, Oshawa Blue Knights Field Lacrosse, and Whitby Jr. Masters and Brooklin Jr. Masters Programs.

Current players have competed in field lacrosse events such as the NCAA, CUFLA, World Jr.

Field Lacrosse Championships, Canadian Jr. and Sr. Field Lacrosse Championships.

Current Players have also competed in box lacrosse events such as the Minto Cup, Mann Cup, Founders Cup and Canadian Masters Championships.

THE ARENA LACROSSE LEAGUE TO BEGIN PLAY JANUARY 7TH, 2017

The Arena Lacrosse League (the “ALL”) is proud to announce the formation of a new winter indoor lacrosse league that will begin play Saturday January 7th, 2017, with a Showcase Event featuring a tripleheader of games at the GM Centre in Oshawa. Confirmed teams in the six team league are Oshawa, Paris, Peterborough, Six Nations, St. Catharines and Toronto.

The league also announced the six teams will play out of three Ontario venues in their inaugural season; GM Centre in Oshawa, Iroquois Lacrosse Arena in Hagersville, and the Syl Apps Community Centre in Paris, Ontario. The ALL is currently in talks with the city of Peterborough, looking to add the Memorial Centre as a fourth venue.

“We are already speaking with venues in the cities that do not have a home venue for our inaugural season”, explained Lance Winn, the leagues VP of Media and Public Relations. “Due to time restraints and availability we are prepared to move forward and will lock in permanent home venues for the 2018 season”.

The ALL will follow the official rules (where applicable) of the National Lacrosse League (NLL), a professional league that operates during the same time frame as the ALL with teams in both Canada and the United States. Interested players 18+ should visit the ALL website (arenalacrosseleague.ca) for more information and to register for the draft to be held in late November.

“We are excited to be able to provide a well-structured league for players to play winter lacrosse. It will give many players an opportunity to showcase their skills and develop their talent with hopes of advancing to the next level in the sport” states Winn. “We have begun informal discussions with the NLL with hopes the ALL will eventually be recognized as their official minor league in the near future but those talks are still in the infancy stage”.

skills through Game Day Clinics supervised by current and former players. “We felt to develop a strong league, building a solid foundation was key. The kids are the future of the sport and many do not get a chance to work on their skills in the winter months. This certainly doesn’t replace their game experience during the OLA season but does allow for some practice during what is currently the off-season” explained League President Paul St. John.

The opening weekend Showcase Event at the GM Centre in Oshawa will begin at 9am with 3 youth lacrosse clinics followed by a tripleheader that will feature Niagara vs Paris, Peterborough vs Six Nations, and capped off with Oshawa vs Toronto. EDGES FROM SCARY SKATE Edges are by far one of the most important skills to master in the skating hockey game. The blade has 2 edges, the inside and outside edge. You always using your edges while you are skating in a game, but mainly for stopping and accelerating, striding and turning. The main idea is to have your edges work for you and not against you.

To really feel your inside and outside edges shift your weight into the blade to the inside and outside edges. The inside edge is the inner side of your blade, for example on your right skate it is the left edge of the blade.

The outer side of the blade is your outside edge. On your right skate again, it is the right edge of the blade. Start by rolling your boot or pushing your ankles out and in while standing on the ice.

Make sure you are really applying a lot of downward pressure to the ball of your foot which is the middle of your blade When your skating to maximize grip and control in the ice you will want to push your hockey skate at the ankles, at least halfway to the ice, creating a skate that is on a 45 degree angle. As you get stronger on your skates and have more confidence, and are willing to go outside of your comfort zone, you will be able to push the angle of the edge even harder and more aggressive.

Working on edge control and edges is not an easy task. To be able to roll your ankle to an angle of 45 degrees is not easy, but you have to work on this to be successful in achieving great edges. Falling down or losing balance is very common when trying to master edges. We see

skaters that are really trying to get over on that angle wipe out, or fall down. We always praise those skaters, because we know that they will soon have strong edges. They then understand when they have gone too far, and where they have lost control.

The next step is called counterbalancing, which is a common power skating term we use. Counterbalancing in a power skating term means to shift your upper body in the opposite direction of your edges. When your edges roll properly in one direction you must counter this action by shifting your upper bodyweight in the opposite direction. You need to keep your shoulders parallel to the ice. If you lean too much of your upper body weight in the same direction of your edge and the angle of the edge becomes too aggressive, it will slip out from under you and cause you to lose power or fall down. To give you a mental image picture a motorcycle racer shifts his or her weight to the outside in a sharp turn so the bike does not slide out. Same thing in hockey.

Edge control is tough and you need to be willing to go outside of your comfort zone in order to master this skill. Do not get upset that you’re falling down or wiping out, when you aggressively force your blade on that inside or outside angle.

The minute you learn to use your edges the proper way you will take right off.

FANSHAWE WINS THE INAUGURAL NATIONAL COLLEGE BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP In a rematch of the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) gold medal game, the Fanshawe Falcons defeated the St. Clair Saints 2-1 to win the inaugural National College Baseball Championship hosted by Durham College.

This was the first time in five years that St. Clair did not win a major tournament that they were in as they entered the event as the four-time OCAA champions, 2013/2014 OUA/OCAA champions and 2012 CIBA champions.

St. Clair beat Fanshawe 7-4 in this year's OCAA final.

The Falcons relied on strong pitching and great defence in the championship game as they held the Saints to their lowest run total of the season.

St. Clair held a 1-0 lead scoring off a wild pitch in the bottom of the second inning, but Fanshawe would respond with two runs of their own in the top of the third.

In the rally, the Falcons would ring off four straight singles.

Pitchers Bryan Hames, Tyler Rymal and Robert Doyle shut down the Saints offence over the next five innings, holding the green and gold to just four hits. Following the tournament, Hames was named the Most Valuable Player.

St. Clair starting pitcher Shane Courtney was impressive for the Saints, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and a walk.

Earlier in the day, the Falcons advanced to the finals with a 5-0 victory over the host Durham Lords where Kyle Zimmer pitched a complete game shutout.

St. Clair advanced to the final in dramatic fashion, with a walkoff 2-1 win over the Holland Hurricanes. Kyle Breitner allowed just one hit against the Hurricanes, which was a solo home-run by Josh MacDonald.
