G

rant Barr began playing golf as soon as he could hold a golf club. The now 28-year-old has been playing competitively since age 10, and he has been a member at the Cornwall Golf and Country Club since he was 15.

During the Cornwall Golf Club Championship that took place at the beginning of August, Barr won first place in the championship class. Over the three-day and 54hole event, Barr had a total of 215 strokes. The Club Championship is an annual event that has been taking place since 1930. There are four divisions for men: championship class, A class, B class, and C class. For women, there are three divisions: A class, B class, and C class.

“I have played in the Club Championship every year since I joined the golf course. I also competed in many junior golf events growing up. I played in the CPGA Junior Tour, Quebec Junior Tour, and even competed in some provincial and national Continued on page 2

If you are someone who would like to dip your toe into growing something for the first time, garlic is one of the easiest vegetables to grow and now could be the time to begin the process.

First, you need a seed (preferably organic) source, and The Eastern Ontario Garlic Festival coming up on Sunday September 27th in Cornwall will have growers to purchase from. Around the end of October, after the first hard frost, pry the garlic cloves apart, making sure they have the hard skin on them. In your garden, or even in a pot on your balcony,

plant each clove 2 or 3 inches deep, about 6 inches apart. Cover and firm down the soil. To save yourself some weeding, keep your garlic bed moist and give the garlic a bit of a blanket for the winter by covering the garlic bed with about 2 inches of shredded leaves, pine needles, or dried grass clippings. It’s fun to see the green shoots poking their way through the mulch in spring.

The garlic will be ready to harvest in late July or early August of the next year. Stay tuned for the next installment about growing, harvesting, and storing the garlic that you’ve planted.

Dale Hawerchuk: 1963-2020

T

here are legends and then there are legends - those memory-makers who simply transcend their chosen fields. Dale Hawerchuk is that kind of legend.

Who hasn’t seen the Royals 10 license plate in the city, his broad smile after two Memorial Cups? I get goose bumps just thinking of those heady days. As can often happen with our heroes, because they are human, they leave us far too early. We only need to look back to Dave Ezard’s untimely death to realize that sad fact.

Seven years before his arrival, the Royals had won a Memorial Cup and that moment in history was one the Seaway city’s hockey fans could hang their hats on forever.

With the coming of Dale Hawerchuk, not one of those fans could have imagined the team would win two more cups and cement not only the Royals, but Dale Hawerchuk into the annals of Cornwall sports.

When Hawerchuk arrived in Cornwall in 1979 with his dad, Dale often told the story, “We took one whiff of the smell and nearly turned around and went Ten years ago Dale Hawerchuk heard Thom Racine wanted an back home to Oshawa.”

‘Mums for Thanksgiving’ Event is a Go

ach year, the Rotary Club of Cornwall Sunrise hosts their oldest, continuous fundraising activity, Mums for Thanksgiving. This year will be no different, with the project planned to go on as per usual with proper social distancing practices in place.

“The Rotary Club of Cornwall Sunrise was chartered in January 1989, and we delivered the first Mums for Thanksgiving colourful potted flowers to friends and businesses in Cornwall the week before Thanksgiving 1989,” says Bette Miller. “As our oldest fundraiser, Mums for Thanksgiving has been a very important factor in the Club’s ability to undertake projects in our own community and beyond.”

Some projects that have been supported by the club’s past mums fundraising efforts include substantial contributions to Hospice Cornwall ($50,000), the Rotary ice pad at the Benson Centre ($50,000), The Cornwall Aquatic Centre ($50,000), playground equipment for Lamoureux Park ($40,000), Boys’ and Girls’ Club Cornwall/SD&G, Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation, and the Cornwall Outdoor Gym. In addition, the club has also offered funds to the Agape Centre, Polio Eradication, TriCounty Literacy, Canadian Mental Health Association, Canadian Blood Services, Children’s Christmas Fund, Baldwin House, Day Away for Seniors, and more.

“The original suggestion came from Sandra Loucks, wife of Charter President, Brian Loucks.

They recognized that a fall/winter fundraising project was necessary if we were to undertake the projects we were dreaming of for the future,” says Miller about the inception of the annual fundraiser.

The club sold about 450 pots of flowers during that first year. Now, this project has grown into one of their most important fundraising projects, selling upwards of 1,500 to 2,000 pots per year.

The mums, which are florist quality, are pre-sold by Rotarians or online at a cost of $15 per pot. Any member will be pleased to accept an order. Flowers will be personally delivered by Rotarians to homes and businesses from October 1st to 5th, 2020 to any address in Cornwall, SD&G, or Akwesasne (Cornwall Island only). The club will deliver to business addresses on October 1st and 2nd, and then to residential addresses after these dates.

“The only difference this year will be that because of the need for personal distancing, we may need to ring the doorbell and then sit the pots on the doorstep,” says Miller.

This year, the fundraiser will benefit several organizations and foundations in the area.

“With the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic, Agape Centre and the Salvation Army Food Banks, Baldwin House, Akwesasne Family Wellness Centre, and Centre 105 have become a primary focus in helping to ensure that our citizens receive help at this difficult time,” says Miller. “It is our hope that successful fundraising will also enable continuation of the support we have been proud to give to various youth and other programs. Recently we have been able to assist the Cornwall Rowing Club with $3000 and Cornwall Minor Football with $1000. It is our hope that both of these donations will help our community move forward. These and other organizations are participants in helping the community towards a healthy new normal.”

presents An Interview with Rick Lalonde

L

ocal coach Rick Lalonde has been very involved in sports from a young age. Early on, he played lacrosse, hockey, baseball, and golf, just to name a few. However, hockey was his number one choice.

“Hockey was my passion, so when I decided to get involved in coaching, I committed myself to doing everything I could do to develop myself as a hockey coach,” says Lalonde. “I became involved with the NCCP, taking coaching levels and clinics that would help develop me into a better coach. My athletes have always been important to me, so it was important for me to educate myself so I could help them develop.”

According to Lalonde, one of the main reasons he first got involved in hockey was his father.

“At 27 years of age, Dad was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and was unable to work any longer. It was a struggle, but he still found a way to get me to the rink and be involved in CMHA,” says Lalonde. “I loved hockey and was so grateful for his time and what he did for me that I just wanted to give back. That’s how my journey in hockey started, almost 30 years ago.”

Recently, Lalonde has been coaching OHA’s Midget AAA in the HEO Midget AAA League.

“We had a pretty good season. It was a very young team which continued to get better as the season progressed,” says Lalonde.

In terms of hockey coaching success, Lalonde says that it comes down to a few different things.

“Being committed to continuously developing since the game is always changing, having a strong work ethic, and being wellprepared,” says Lalonde. “Surround yourself with good hockey people. Every job I’ve had I was lucky to have good hockey people around me. Guys like Brent Loney and Al Wagar, two local guys that helped me develop. Mentors like Bob Hartley, Martin Mondu, Mike Oke, and others who would allow me to call them for direction and advice. And lastly, athletes that trust you because they know you are doing whatever you can to help them inch closer to their goals.”

Lalonde says that the best part of coaching is watching the team’s development.

“I enjoy seeing young people develop in a sport they love and want to be successful in, watching them develop not only as athletes but as young people as well. It’s great when you see teams developing chemistry on and off the

Photo Submitted ice and see your teams take the information you give them and apply it to the game, whether it’s an individual or team play,” says Lalonde.

As he’s been coaching for quite some time, Lalonde naturally has a few memories that stand out for him.

“When your team overachieves and you win a playoff series that you were not

supposed to, it is very special. Or watching athletes that you worked with have success in the game,” says Lalonde. “But I guess my time with the Cornwall Aces doing video was a special memory. I learned so much from that experience. I believe that’s the reason I was very fortunate to have all the coaching opportunities in Junior, both in Ontario and Quebec.”

All in all, Lalonde says it’s important to create an honest environment for the athletes, telling them what they need to hear, not what they want to hear.

“I also try to reinforce with my athletes what they need to do and what they have to do before doing what they want to do. That includes on ice, off ice, and in the classroom,” says Lalonde. “It takes lots of work to be a successful hockey player. Don’t cut corners, work hard, and don’t cheat yourself. You can work hard and still have fun. Make sure to fight through bad days to earn the best days of your life.

Lalonde says he’s grateful that hockey was such a big part of his life.

“I had the opportunity to meet many people and create some good friends,” says Lalonde.

“I also had the opportunity to visit so many parts of the world because of hockey, places I don’t think I would have seen otherwise.”

The secret, after having tackled all those long unfinished jobs around the house and yard, is, of course, to find other bears who can show you where the best retirement berry patches are. But where are they, these savvy retirees who can show you the way?

They might be hanging out at church, which they now have time for, or at the coffee shop holding forth on politics as though they’d spent their entire career on “the hill” instead of at the bank or the school, or the factory.

But if you hang around for a bit, drinking coffee and looking

There are classes available to hone skills that may need honing. Not yoga, perhaps, but maybe that class that teaches you how to text. That might be handy!

And volunteering could be a thing to do. Assess your skills with an eye to their applicability. Maybe you can’t knit socks, or read dramatically to children, but you can drive. You like to drive. And read a map. Maybe volunteer to take folks to chemo or dialysis. Don’t see anything you like in the volunteer world? Get creative! You like dogs, and you like to walk. Maybe help out older bears who can’t take their own dogs for a sniff anymore. Or younger bears who work all day and would love someone to take their lonely dog for a mid-day adventure.

In fact, he has been working as a fishing guide in Northwestern Ontario for the past nine summers. He started out as a dock hand and a maintenance person, and then after a few years, he transitioned to the role as one of the head fishing guides at Nielsen’s Fly-In Lodge.

“My fourth summer was the year my parents had bought the lodge and taken the business over,” says Alexander. “So, I became the Head Guide and Manager of Operations at the camp.”

Alexander has always enjoyed being outdoors and enjoying what nature has to offer, so this job has been the perfect fit for him. He especially enjoys being up north on a lake that you can only access by float plane.

“It’s just a really cool experience on its own. And then you get to go out on a lake, sit in a boat all nice and quiet. All you can hear are loons and birds, as you fish away, never knowing what you’re going to catch or how big it’s going to be,” says Alexander. “It’s so calming and relaxing, plus it’s good eating!”

“If I had to fish one fish for the rest of my life, it would be the musky hands down,” says Alexander. “There are no other fish like it in fresh water. It’s big, mean, and aggressive” For Alexander, there’s nothing more fun than relaxing by the water and catching a few big fish.

“Fishing is a relaxing thing to do and it’s cool to see nature do its thing,” says Alexander. “And there’s nothing more fun than fighting with a fish!”

Ready to Return to Ottawa

fter more than 5 months of Parliament being shut down due to COVID-19 with no regular sittings or regular business, it is time for Members of Parliament to return to Ottawa and get back to the job we were elected to do.

Without a doubt, there is no shortage of issues for us to address. We left numerous pieces of legislation unfinished, the government has pledged hundreds of billions of dollars in deficit spending with few questions being able to be asked and even less accountability, and new information drips out daily about the WE scandal and ethics issues.

When I heard that the Liberal government proposed to prorogue Parliament and shut down many investigations into their scandals, it was frustrating to say the least.

I believe this statement to be blunt, but true: if students and teachers are returning to classrooms, then there is no reason why MPs cannot get back to Ottawa with proper social distancing measures in place, in the same fashion that every single workplace in Canada has been implementing. Anything less than getting Parliament restarted and holding the minority government to account is purely a political stall tactic.

While I have enjoyed connecting with businesses and not-for-profit groups throughout the riding on my “Wellness Tour”, and while we have helped hundreds of constituents with case files in my office, it is time to lead by example and get back to Ottawa.

I look forward to getting back to Parliament Hill and being your voice in Ottawa. There is lots of work to be done and questions to be asked. Let’s get to it.

Interview with MPP Jim MacDonell

T

he summer season is quickly coming to an end, and the recovery efforts made over this short time have been truly eye-opening and gratifying. At the start of July, many of our restaurants were still making preparations to reopen to on-site customers. I can say with considerable pride, that they have successfully carried out their tasks. Credit also has to go out to local municipal and public health officials for providing the necessary support. And of course, thank you to all the local customers who were able to patronize these establishments. These successes were accomplished through hard work and by following guidelines to wear masks when required, maintaining proper physical distancing, and using onsite sanitizers before entering our businesses.

As we progress through Stage 3 of our reopening plan, preparations are underway to relax restrictions to allow more businesses and organizations to open to the public. These measures are essential next steps, but we must not forget the needs of those who are most susceptible to this virus, such as our seniors and those with compromised immune systems. We are not out of the woods yet, and in response to these needs, we have extended orders under the Reopening Ontario legislation. The extension allows us to mitigate the ongoing risks and effects of COVID-19, especially if cases escalate significantly through an anticipated second wave. It ensures that essential measures are available to protect our vulnerable populations.

This past month was also a time of paramount consideration for parents and guardians as they assess whether their children should return to classrooms or continue remote learning. Either way, the Ontario government has taken strong measures to support both decisions. Early childcare experts have identified the importance of getting our younger children back to school for the development of their learning and social skills, and we are working with our medical experts to allow this to happen. I am confident that the government’s plan, adapted by school boards, is the safest in the country. As we move further into Phase 3 and more activities and businesses open, including schools, the opportunity for spread increases, and it is crucial for us to double-down on our safety practices. We need to remain flexible, allowing us to adapt quickly if the number of new cases significantly increases. Ontario is spending more dollars per capita than any province in the country, but we will need the cooperation of everyone involved to be successful. I wish students and staff a healthy and safe return.

With Labour Day approaching, I want to wish the Williamstown Fair group good luck as they work to hold their 209th Fair. The drive-through version on Saturday, September 5th will allow faithful fans of the fair to appreciate some of the terrific products, crafts, and services available in rural Ontario.

Slapshot the Mascot: So Much More than a Man with a Mask

ene Emond has seen and done a lot in his three quarters of a century. His resume includes pin boy, gas station owner, restaurant and chip stand proprietor, milkman, textile worker, army reservist, usher, security officer, goal judge, coach, volunteer firefighter - and mascot.

For years, Emond was the man behind the mask of Slapshot, the Cornwall Colts mascot. He took

on the role when asked to do so by long-time Colts fixture, Mike Piquette. “The part I loved was being involved and interacting with the kids,” Emond says. He adds that greeting the fans, shaking hands with the adults and kids, and taking pictures with them was very rewarding. As the mascot, he also appeared at store grand openings, parades, and personal appearances.

Emond started working as a pin boy at the Olympia Bowling Alley when he was 14. He’s met the likes of Doug Gilmore, Mark Crawford, Scott Arniel, Ian MacInnis, John Wensink, and many more. Emond also counts meeting local legend Moe ‘The Toe’ Racine and his friendship with Thom Racine as highlights in his sporting career. “You’ve got to enjoy life,” he says. “You’ve got to take the good with the bad and keep on moving.”

Walkin’ The Beat With The Cornwall Police Service Over the last year, the CPS has received 9-1-1 calls from residents advising that someone else’s property had blown onto their yard during a wind storm, inquiring about how to obtain a Police Record Check, and even advising that their furnace was not working. These are not lifethreatening emergencies.

A lot of these calls also happen when young children are given cellphones and smartphones to play with as toys. What many people do not realize is that every 9-1-1 call, whether intentional or not, results in a dispatcher having to determine whether a real emergency exists and if police, fire, or paramedics should be dispatched.

With every unintentional call received, valuable seconds may be taken away from someone who really needs help. In addition, police must follow up with each 9-1-1 call by making contact with the caller.

If you place an accidental 9-1-1 call, please stay on the line to tell the operator that it was an accident.

Emergency responders will act if the call is disconnected or there is no

response. It is important to also talk to children about what to do if they accidentally call 9-1-1, and to explain the importance of staying on the line to tell the operator it was an accident.

To prevent accidental 9-1-1 calls, I recommend familiarizing yourself with your phone’s emergency features.

Use the phone’s keypad lock, turn off the phone’s 9-1-1-autodial feature, and do not program the number into your phone’s speed dial directory.

The CPS is always available to help anyone who needs it, 24/7. We simply ask that you use the right number to reach us. 9-1-1 is available for all crimes in progress or where lives or property are in immediate danger.

Making Waves on the St. Lawrence River

oating on the St. Lawrence River is a great way to spend a beautiful sunny and warm day. It makes for a perfect Saturday and is a wonderful antidote for the mind, especially during a pandemic. Boating offers a sort of light at the end of the confinement tunnel.

Maurice Rose and his family are some of the many avid boaters who are using their love of the water to escape the chaos of the pandemic. On the day of interview, Maurice, his wife Brittany, and their daughters were preparing to take their good friends, Antony and Camilia out on the St. Lawrence to enjoy a day excursion on their 32ft.

In Reel Time Generation Wolf

ith its review being originally published on November 23rd, 2016, I was happy to see the Canadian Indie thriller Generation Wolf at a special solo screening while it was still on the festival circuit. I was also fortunate to spend some time with the film’s producer, co-writer, director and star Christian de la Cortina, as well as fellow actor Tyler Murree (Cornwall’s own), and its composer, Martin Macek. I am pleased to say that I received an email from Christian a few days ago, and he has passed along the wonderful news that it has been acquired by Samuel Goldwyn Films and is finally able to be viewed on Amazon Prime Worldwide (an exciting piece of news for a little independent film from Quebec). I hope that you will revisit my review and give this worthwhile thriller a viewing.

As I sat watching the special screening of the Canadian independent film Generation Wolf (the Ontario non-festival premiere held at the historic Port Theatre in Cornwall) surrounded by a massive audience – an image triggered in my mind. . . that of two individuals playing Russian roulette. Though this may seem nonsensical (especially once you read my synopsis), please allow me to elaborate. The movie had a certain inevitability, much like the deathly contest – after all, Russian roulette always ends with a bullet to the head. Yet, it was also imbued with many other features associated with the contest – chance, luck, suspense and a certain unpredictability. It is perhaps the biggest risk/reward game that can be played. As you can imagine, Generation Wolf produces its fair share of nerving thrills.

Christian de la Cortina co-writes (along with Frank Baylis), produces, directs and stars in this Canadian picture that is still surfing the festival circuit. He plays Vincent Del Toro, a smart young man who has left his home in Michigan for sunny days in California, and is on the verge of putting his business on the map. Converting classic cars of

yesteryear into modern, electric cars of the future, he has already made some sales. Waiting on the licensing bureau, he soon realizes that they are actually re-possessing his cars – as they won’t accept the electric motors he has used.

With the weight of the world on his shoulders, he flies back to Detroit, looking to find financing for his venture. Denied at every turn, he is seeing his dream quickly slip away.

While visiting his father Juan Pablo (Sergio Hernández) at the garage where he works, he just happens to bump into an old highschool acquaintance, Bill (Tyler Murree).

The unpopular, goofy loser of those tumultuous teenage years, Del Toro is perhaps slightly surprised to see the man driving a posh Porsche. Bill is ecstatic when he spots his former friend – as he was one of the few people who always treated him well in secondary school. Looking to catch up, they agree to meet in the near future.

Del Toro reaches out to his former girlfriend Valery (Hayley Sales), a woman who works with an accepted electric motor company. Though pain from their collective past echoes through the meeting, the man is able to convince her to submit the paperwork without payment – he is given six weeks to come up with the cash (as that is when her boss returns from vacation).

After meeting with Bill again, he realizes that the jokester is making his money through illicit means – a massive marijuana grow-op in his large home. Running low on options, the desperate man asks to setup a one time deal with the shady entrepreneur, seeing his father’s dilapidated barn as being the perfect hidey hole for the venture.

Entering the dangerous and illegal world, he must nurture the crop as it grows over its thirty-nine day maturity date. Yet, in true Murphy’s Law fashion, he is told that he must pay for the motors sooner than originally expected. Borrowing the money from his partner in crime, things continue to disintegrate as

Interview with Claude McIntosh

“When it comes to job satisfaction, there is nothing more rewarding than being able to help a resident with a problem, sometimes with something as simple as putting them in touch with the right department or person,” says Cornwall City Councillor Claude McIntosh. However, for this two-term councillor, helping his constituents is just a small part of what local politics is all about.

Born in Cornwall on Oct. 22, 1945, McIntosh, now 74 years old, calls himself a ‘product’ of Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School’s class of ‘65. He retired in 2012 after 43 years in the newspaper business, starting out as a “cub” reporter at the Standard Freeholder. He worked in Chatham, Sarnia, and Windsor, serving as sports editor, city editor, and associate editor/ columnist.

“My return to Cornwall and the S-F was a diversion,” McIntosh explains. “I was on my way to the Montreal Star sports department (to cover college sports) when I was ‘deployed’ to the S-F to fill the sports editor vacancy on a temporary basis. The job morphed into permanent position. I’ve never regretted the move,” he says.

Encouraged by Denis Thibault, who had just retired from council, and former mayor and MP, Ed Lumley, McIntosh first ran in the 2012 municipal election, finishing second overall.

He was re-elected in 2018. “I do not plan to seek re-election,” he says. “I have enjoyed the experience but feel that eight years is enough. It is a big commitment.”

McIntosh spent a large part of his newspaper career covering politics. “I had a pretty good handle on the nuts and bolts of the political game at the grass roots level,” he says. “My news background gave me a lot of experience in dealing with the public.”

Councillor McIntosh professes to have always had an interest in politics, especially at the municipal level. “I always believed that a city council was akin to an iceberg,” he explains.

“What the public sees is just the tip of the process. Most of the work is behind the scenes, much of it on council committees; the televised twice-a-month regular meetings are ‘show time’. I find committee work the most rewarding part of the job.”

There are a few issues that McIntosh has found particularly important for Cornwall City Council over his two terms. Working with Akwesasne to obtain local harbour lands from the Federal Government is one project he worked on. “It was a long, drawn-out process that required a lot of spade work, but it got done,” he says. “Now that we own the lands with Akwesasne, the challenge is to develop the asset and fold it into the overall waterfront development scheme.

The process has gone a long way in cementing a good relationship with Akwesasne, which, when one considers how much Akwesasne residents contribute to our economy, is important.”

Another accomplishment McIntosh mentions, is helping to reform the grants to outside agencies process which, he says, had become the proverbial political football at budget time. “I was happy to serve on the ad hoc committee with Todd Bennett and Dean Hollingsworth which worked with administration on new streamlined guidelines that took the air out of the political football,” he says.

Finally, reviewing and restructuring the public venues naming policy is currently on the agenda.

McIntosh says he has been pleasantly surprised by the abundance of talent in the ranks of administration. “The taxpayers (and council) are well-served by this outstanding dedicated group,” he says of the City.

As for challenges, he feels the biggest for any council comes at budget time when needs and services clash with a growing wish list and the need to keep property taxes as low as possible.

Interview with Kristen Gardner

The fall election of 2018 put Kirsten Gardner, Deputy Mayor for the Municipality of South Dundas, into office for the first time. She also sits on County Council for SD&G. “I’ve had an interest in politics, people, and making a difference my whole life,” she says.

Born in Montreal, now 49-year-old Kirsten Gardner did most of her growing up in South Stormont. “Having worked in South Dundas, my husband and I decided to raise our daughter in Morrisburg,” she explains.

The Deputy Mayor brings considerable experience to her office. “Last year, after almost a decade in various leadership roles with the Provincial Government, I decided to pursue two of my passions – my community and mental health,” Gardner says. “I am currently an instructor delivering Mental Health First Aid, a course by the Mental Health Commission of Canada.”

Her career background also includes roles facilitating a program that helped people on Ontario Works return-to-work. Gardner was also a manager with the St. Lawrence Parks Commission. “I currently sit on the River Institute Board,” she says, “and have held board positions on the EOHU, the Police Services Board, and the United Way of SD&G.” Gardner has also worked on many community projects over the years, some that are still evident today, like the historical murals in South Dundas. Twenty years ago, she worked on the Save the Train Project, and now she’s at it again. “This time, I get to work with my son, Gardner who is the current president,” she says. “I was the ARC member for Morrisburg Public School during the school closure review, and I have volunteered as a victim services responder with VCARS of SDG.”

Changing the negative view that some people have about politicians is one of the things that prompted Gardner to run for office. “I believe that leadership is about listening, connecting, and then action,” she explains. “I also believe that communities deserve a conversation about the things that matter most to them. I want to be part of the conversations that impact everyone, and with a young family - my daughter is 8 try to leave things better than I found them.”

She adds that she is passionate about people, community, and communication, and is willing to listen and dialogue to come to the best decisions. “I will passionately fight for what’s right,” she says.

Solving problems, working with people, and giving a voice to residents who feel they aren’t being heard are rewarding aspects of holding office, according to Gardner.

“Finding common ground and providing reasoning is also rewarding,” she says.

As for challenges, she feels there is often confusion around how municipal leaders make decisions and about the items that they can or cannot change, or just how government works in general and which level of government is responsible for what.

Would Kirsten Gardner consider running for a different office? “I tend to gravitate to issues or areas that I’d like to work on to make better,” Gardner says. “Given my background as a public servant and community leader, I would definitely consider leading at the provincial level.”

he love story of Veronique Besner and Jessey Swiatkowski is a fairy tale. Besner and Swiatkowski met when they were in high school. Despite being in different grades, Besner was in ninth grade and Swiatkowski was in tenth grade, the two got to know each other in a music class. They have now been together for seven magical years.

Besner has always had a love for Disney. When the couple planned a trip to Disney World in Orlando in 2018, Swiatkowski knew it was time to ask his high-school sweetheart the big question. On Nov. 14, 2018, after the fireworks show at the Magic Kingdom, Swiatkowski got down on one knee and asked Besner to marry him.

To add an interesting nuance to his character, while Cortina’s Del Toro speaks English, he is always businesslike – having a certain mask, or facade, that guards his true self. It

Business is their beast – and nothing will get in the way as they attempt to conquer their goals. Fear is not in their vocabulary; survival with benefits is.

Generation Wolf is a superlative little thriller. At a taut ninety minutes, it flows well, boasts some nice twists (while not being difficult to follow) and features superb performances.

I love highland dancing because I get to meet new people and travel around the world competing. I hope one day that I will be able to perform in the Royal Edinburgh and Basel Tattoos.”

Paige’s love of highland dancing has led her to make some long-range plans. “After I graduate from CharLan I hope to attend McGill and study Business,” she says. “After I complete my post-secondary education, I hope to open up my own highland dancing school.

Paige feels her most notable accomplishments are winning two championships and placing at the SDCCS and the USIR Championships, where highland dancers from around the world come to compete.

“Highland dancing originated in Scotland and is part of my heritage and that of many other Canadians,” says Paige. “We celebrate our heritage at the Glengarry Highland Games each year where I can compete, and others can enjoy watching. It is one of my favourite competitions of the year.”

Brandon Primeau Talks the 2020 Eclipse Cross

randon Primeau has lived in Cornwall for most of his life and he has since decided to start his career here as well. Primeau is the Sales and Leasing Consultant for Cornwall Mitsubishi.

Curling Affected by COVID-19 Pandemic

C

urling ended abruptly in midMarch when curling clubs were closed and ice was removed across the country due to COVID-19. Many events on the World Curling Tour and the Grand Slam of Curling were postponed and eventually cancelled.

In fact, the complete world of sports was turned upside down due to the pandemic, and at present most sports are still being affected.

Some professional sports such as hockey, basketball, baseball, and golf have restarted, albeit without fans.

These sports with huge television contracts can survive without the fan base. At the time of this writing, the Cornwall Curling Centre has yet to come to the decision about

meeting during the summer to discuss these and other issues. Will in-club bonspiels be allowed to occur and if so, what will this look like? Will we have a second wave of this pandemic and if so, will it shut the club down for the second time?

The Men’s World Curling Champions in Glasgow, Scotland that was scheduled for last March was cancelled. The Ladies’ Worlds scheduled for Prince George, BC was also cancelled. The last two Grand Slam events of the season were also cancelled. Early July saw the cancellation of the first four Grand Slam events for this season die due to the pandemic. The Players Grand Slam event in Toronto is scheduled to happen followed by the season finale at the end of April in Olds, Alberta.

We will continue to keep you posted on further postponements or cancellations.

orn in Cornwall in 1946, Jean Payette forged a hockey career that found him in the WHA with the Quebec Nordiques for two seasons (1972-1974).

Payette scored 19 goals and helped out on the ice with a total of 40 assists while in Quebec. Jean is a member of the Cornwall Sports Hall of Fame.

With the advent of Ontario’s Stage 3 reopening plan, and professional sports and local leagues looking at return-toplay protocols, fans might soon be able to watch and play their favourite sports. Which sport are you most looking forward to seeing or playing again?

(John lives rurally, near Bainsville, ON and he works as a senior field coordinator on the OLRT Phase 2 project in Ottawa for Morrison Hershfield, a transportation engineering firm. He was born in Drummondville, QC and was raised in Melbourne, QC in the Eastern Townships.)

“I am most eager to get back to playing old-boys rugby” John says. “I don’t really watch sports, so the restart of pro sports is not very important to me.”

John started playing rugby when he was 20 yrs. old. “It is the only sport that I excelled in,” he explains. “The social aspect of the sport is as important as playing the game. I’ve made many friends through rugby. Playing old-boys is a chance to get together and socialize like I was in my 20’s again (I am 54).”

“Like many other people during these unprecedented times, I have been long awaiting the return of top-level hockey broadcasted on TV. Luckily, on August 1st, we will see NHL stars deking, passing, saving, shooting, and scoring return to the small screen. This is welcomed as fans were on the edge of their seats watching one of the best playoff hunts in recent times. Prior to the stoppage, many teams had a shot at winning Lord Stanley’s cup, or spending the summer out on the links.

I have been a fan of hockey since I could walk. My dad made sure I would grow up to love the game and cheer for the

same team as he did. I’m a Montreal Canadiens fan to this day. Although much hardship has come from the ongoing pandemic, the fact that the pandemic even existed has given me, along with many others, the opportunity to see their team compete for the Stanley Cup this year. As much as I would like to see the Habs hoist the cup, I think they have a much better chance winning the Alexis Lafreniere sweepstakes. In all honesty, I think the Washington Capitals or, as much as any Habs fan would hate to say it, the Boston Bruins will reign supreme come the season’s end.

Even if this outcome occurs for the Canadiens and they do go out in the first round, just being able to sit down with a few buddies and watch the best players and teams competing for the ultimate prize makes the return of hockey much more anticipated.”

Chris is also looking forward to the return of NHL hockey. “There’s nothing better than getting home from work, relaxing, and putting some hockey on the TV,” he says.

Born in Cornwall, Chris and his family moved extensively when he was young, eventually settling in Winnipeg, which explains why he is a life-long Jets fan. “It was awesome when Winnipeg got the Jets back,” Chris says.

Chris and his young family recently moved to Cornwall from Hamilton, where Chris was an avid Bulldogs fan, attending many games for both the AHL and OHL iterations of the team. “I’m currently looking for a beer league to play in once things open up,” says the 29-year-old defenseman.

“I am dying for rugby to restart. I’ve never really been a jock, never been heavily into sports. I like athletics and have tried many different sports, but nothing ever really grabbed me. As kids, we were either playing street hockey or pickup baseball. Once I tried organized sports, but it wasn’t as fun.

Senior I first gave rugby a try when I was at Vanier College (CEGEP) in Montreal, where I was born, and it was by far the Environmental best part of my CEGEP experience, no question. We would play hard and socialize just as hard afterward. I moved to Officer the Montreal Irish Rugby Football Club after college. What struck me most about the sport was that after sometimes spending 80 minutes trying to decimate my opposite number (and sometimes it got pretty nasty!), we would still buy each other a beer after the game and laugh about it.

I worked for two summers down in Boston when I was in university, and when, from my window, I saw a bunch of guys out in the field practicing rugby, I grabbed my kit and joined in on the spot. Of course, I was welcomed immediately. Rugby is for everyone, and there is a spot for everyone in rugby. I have since played for the Ottawa Irish Rugby Football Club, and now the Cornwall Crusaders. In the same vein, I have played for temporary travelling teams, and pretty much any team that has been short a player. A rugby team will regularly “lend” players to the opposing team in order to even up the numbers on either side.

I have played rugby since 1984. In fact, I met my wife while on the Montreal Irish float at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Montreal in 1988. We’ll have been married a happy 25 years on July 29. My daughter plays rugby at the University of Waterloo, too.

At this stage of my career, I find myself helping to coach the St. Joseph’s girls’ high school team. I sometimes play for the senior men’s division team, but I mostly play for the Old Boys team. As such, we travel around Eastern Ontario playing other clubs. The last few years, that has meant joining forces with other clubs as our membership has fallen somewhat. But, as rugby is such a welcoming community, it is never a problem to find a game…that is, until this season.

I really miss the game. I miss playing, I miss the physicality of it, and I miss the social aspect of the sport. For me, all of it together is rugby, and it cannot be synthesized, simulated, or replaced. The sooner that we get back to playing safely, the better and happier I will be.”

and falling in relatively warm waters, I remember how I felt when we lost control of the boat and it capsized; the shock of losing my balance, slipping, and eventually being pulled into the water. I remember the brief sense of disorientation when my body went under the water.

Falling off a boat or a dock is not like diving: you are surprised, you become unstable, you lose your balance, and you cannot grip onto anything. You are in free-fall and it is easy to panic; as you go down, it takes a few seconds to realize where you are and look up to the surface to swim back up. In these circumstances, it is good to know your personal floatation device, or PFD, will bring you back up to the surface and save your life.

Wearing a PFD does not fully guarantee safety, however. Tipping the Laser was a game and while we thought we were in full control of the situation and wearing our PFD, there was always the risk of being hit on the head by the swinging boom, being caught by a line under the boat, or finding yourself trapped under the sail and unable to breathe. These things happen and can lead to fatalities.

Such an incident happened on May 9th, 2013 during the America’s Cup in San Francisco. The 60ft. Artemis capsized and Andrew Smith, a gold medalist British sailor, was trapped underneath some hard debris. Smith perished wearing his PFD and a helmet.

You have represented your club and your city with class and dignity through the years. As you contemplate your future and look back on your past, remember you have given so many positive vibes to our community.

My wife & I are officially Grandparents (OH YA!). Felix was born August 20th, weighing in at 9lbs 4oz. Congrats to my son Patrick and daughter-in-law Meghan! I think Patrick has already been to Rookez Edge looking for kid’s goalie equipment.

Isaac Barr Waits on Hockey Debut for Portage College Voyageurs

oving across the country for hockey is no small feat. COVID-19 makes it that much more difficult.

Isaac Barr is staying on top of training this year after the 2020-2021 Alberta Colleges Conference (ACAC) men’s hockey season was cancelled due to the pandemic. This would have been his first season in the league – a chance to showcase his talents in a new environment with the Portage College Voyageurs.

But the Cornwall native has a lot to keep him motivated as he waits for a return to the ice.

He finished his third season with the Lac La Biche Junior B Clippers winning MVP and Best Forward of the season in the North Eastern Alberta Junior B Hockey League (NEAJBHL).

“My past three years have probably been my best years of hockey for me so far. This year was definitely my best year, winning the scoring title, being deemed MVP of the league, and the first team allstar. Swimming with the Sea Lions: Meet the Coaches

ory Kyer, a coach with the Cornwall Sea Lions Swim Club, grew up swimming with the Sea Lions program. As a senior swimmer, she began coaching with the Sea Lions before heading off to university.

Later on, when her daughters started swimming, she decided that instead of sitting on the sidelines, she would get back into coaching.

Sheilagh McNeil, Head Coach of the Sea Lions, grew up in London, Ontario and found a passion for distance events in swimming. After moving to Cornwall, she joined the Sea Lions as a coach and has been with the program for the past eight years.

“I had always been interested in coaching swimming and other sports.

I helped to coach my high school swim team and continued coaching during university,” said McNeil. “I am also a high school teacher and I’ve coached cross country, track and

field, and volleyball at school.”

McNeil and Kyer both have children who swim with the Sea Lions.

“Sheilagh and I are fortunate enough to have a dynamic program where we both get to coach all swimmers in all groups. The advantage of being a small club is that we get to know our swimmers really well and we have the opportunity to work with our own children, as well as each other’s.

This is really beneficial for our own children as well as for the club,” said Kyer.

McNeil expressed that as a coach she loves seeing the relationships that form between the swimmers.

“Swimming is a unique sport as it’s both an individual sport—competing for your own goals—and a team sport. Swimmers train together, support and push each other, but at the end of the day they perform as individuals. I love seeing how they can bring out the best in each other, challenge and push each other.”

September’s Athlete of the Month, Ethan Butler, is one of four brothers and a multi-sport athlete. He plays baseball, football, hockey, and was set for his first lacrosse season when the COVID pandemic hit.

Ethan is in his fourth season of competitive baseball and is currently playing with the Cornwall Orioles. He’s a versatile athlete, playing shortstop, second base, centre field, and pitcher.

At the plate, he leads his team in homeruns. He’s admired for his speed on the diamond.

Ethan also enjoys playing hockey for the Seaway Valley Rapids and football for the Cornwall Wildcats. In 2019, Ethan’s Rapids team made it to the semi-final round in the Major Peewee AA division, and he garnered ‘Most Improved Player’ honours.

Hard work and discipline are the keys to Ethan’s athletic success. His love of sports and physical activity is well received at home. His father and three brothers - Ryan (16), Owen (11), and Logan (10) - are all leading a sports lifestyle, thanks to sports-taxis mom and grandparents, who travel with a truck-full of equipment. Ethan keeps busy and fit by tending to the family hobby farm, the flock of chickens, and their 4000 square-foot garden. He can always be found in the barn shooting pucks or practising his pitching.

September’s South Stormont Fan Favourite, Lila St-Onge was born in Nova Scotia. Her Scottish roots run deep, as does her passion for Scottish Highland Dance. She fell in love with the sport while watching her cousins compete at the Antigonish Highland Games. She became a student at the Ellen Cameron School of Highland Dance at age 6, and quickly earned her way to the highest level of competition (Premier) by age 8. She placed 6th in her under 10 age group at the 2019 Ontario Provincials.

Scottish Highland Dance requires discipline and athleticism through intense training in technique, stamina, and strength. Lila trains in studio 2-3 times a week (currently via Zoom), as well as in her home studio on her “off” days. She has earned many trophies and awards throughout her dance career, but the greatest reward of all has been the many precious friendships and memories she has gained. She looks forward to getting back into the studio and on the stage with her dance mates and dreams of one day dancing at the World Championships in Scotland.

When not dancing, Lila can be found tumbling around in the backyard, practicing her gymnastics skills. She also enjoys swimming, biking, running, hiking, and camping with her family.

Age:11 Grade: 6 School: Our Lady of Good Counsel Hometown: Long Sault “I am really passionate about sports,” says September’s Fan Favourite, Connor Giroux. “I have played hockey, baseball, soccer, swimming, basketball, and football.”

Connor’s favourite sports are hockey and baseball.

“I have had a bat and a stick in my hands since I could walk, and I wore my first pair of skates at the age of 3,” he says. “If I had to choose one sport, hockey is my ultimate #1! There is so much I love about the game: shooting, racing for the puck, buzzerbeaters, face-off wins, away tournaments, comebacks, and game winners.”

“What I really love most about hockey, and all of the other sports I have played,” Connor explains, “is the chance to be part of a team, to build amazing friendships over the years, to overcome adversity, to learn about discipline, hard work, and determination, and lastly, to learn and grow up to be a good person.”

For the past 3 years, Connor has played AA hockey for the Seaway Valley Rapids and the Eastern Ontario Cobras. In baseball, he spent many years playing Cornwall Minor Baseball and travel ball with the Cornwall River Rats. Last year, he made a change to the Ontario Baseball Association and played for the U10 Seaway Surge team, where he was awarded team MVP and had the opportunity to play at Provincials with the U12 Surge team last fall.

“With COVID-19, baseball was up in the air, but I was very fortunate to be a part of the Cornwall Orioles organization, where I was welcomed onto a U13 team,” Connor says.

“Next year, when I turn 12, I want to become a minor hockey official, just like my mom and dad.”

“Over the years, I have won my share of trophies and medals with the various teams that I have played on,” Connor explains, “but what I have truly won is my character. Sports have enabled me to become a valuable team player, to become a leader for others, to motivate my teammates, to treat my opponents respectfully, and to be humble. I will never forget the video Dad showed me once of a kid having to strike out his best friend in order to win the championship game, and after doing so, he ran to his friend at the plate for comfort rather than celebrate instantly with his team. This is what inspires me.”

Can Am On Road Adventures

eptember’s ‘Tales’ features Spyder-riding couple, Denis and Denise Lortie. The Lorties purchased their first Spyder Limited in 2012 and have recently upgraded to the 2018 model of the same bike. That the Lorties enjoy the Spyder lifestyle goes without saying: between the old and the new machines, they have ridden 65 000 kilometres in eight years.

Denis is 63 years young while Denise is 60. The couple has been happily married for 41 years. He manages a grocery store while she is a retired Judicial Assistant for the Superior Court Judges at the Cornwall Court House with 33 years of service, and currently she works part-time for the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Law Association as a Law Librarian.

“Because of the ease of driving our Spyder,” says Denise, “we are

hoping to be able to drive forever.

We truly enjoy driving with friends and being part of a newly formed group named Spyder Express. We truly enjoy dealing with Ontario East Power Sport, more specifically, Kurtis Cayer and Mark Conti who are very friendly.”

For the Lorties, riding Spyders is a family affair. Says Denise, “We also have a daughter, Renee, and her husband, Chad who also each have their own Ryker and we are now able to ride together and are thoroughly enjoying our three wheelers.”

The couple chose the Spyder Limited for its stability on the road.

They feel the vehicle’s three wheels and its large imprint, which allows other drivers to see the riders more easily, are huge perks. “We would and have highly recommended the Spyder Limited,” says Denise. “A few of our Spyder friends have purchased their own.”

Kingston on Highway 2. “We look forward to our evening rides with friends and planning our next group ride,” Denise says. “It’s a breath of fresh air, having the opportunity to be able to ride a Spyder Limited, which Denis and I extremely enjoy as a married couple of over 41 years.”

ou can break your current mortgage but be aware of the prepayment penalty you will be facing!

You may only be two and a half years into your five years fixed rate mortgage, but this does not mean that you are necessarily locked into your current mortgage. There may be a way out.

In most cases, a mortgage loan can be terminated before the negotiated end of the term. Should you break the mortgage contract before it is up for renewal? The answer lies in what you may be facing in terms of a prepayment penalty. The only way you can truly answer whether breaking the mortgage contract before the end of the term depends on exactly how much you will owe and whether you can afford this penalty moving forward, keeping in mind any other costs associated with negotiating a new mortgage loan. The mortgage industry has put in place precise formulas that will determine what penalty will be owing when a client is breaking a mortgage early. This contingency plan helps the lenders absorb any costs associated with breaking negotiated mortgage loans earlier than that agreed-upon term end of the loan.

There are two basic formulas that are used to determine the prepayment penalty on a broken mortgage loan: 1.

If buying a home that could contain NCR, you should have a sewer lateral camera scope to determine the type and condition of your

Your agent or home inspector should be able to tell you if you should have a sewer line inspection - it is worth the cost (typically $150 to $225) of having this inspection completed.

Most variable mortgages are 3 months interest and most fixed are the greater of IRD or 3 months interest.

Let’s take the example of when a 3-month interest formula would be used to calculate the prepayment penalty. A typical example of the type of mortgage that would suit this equation is a closed variable rate mortgage. In the most basic terms, the equation would look like this: If you have for the sake of argument a $200,000.00 mortgage with a 2.1% interest rate, a lender would calculate your prepayment penalty by taking the amount of your loan ($200,000.00) and multiply this by the interest rate (2.1%) and then dividing by 4 (this is a quarter of a year or 3 months penalty) $200,000.00 x 2.1%/4=$1,050.00 In this scenario, your prepayment penalty would be $1,050.00.

When would an IRD calculation be made then? A typical loan that a lender would utilize the IRD formula to calculate your penalty would be a closed fixed-rate mortgage.

As the equation states, we are looking for the difference between the interest rate that is assigned to your mortgage loan and the current interest rate that is available. Your

penalty is based on the interest that the lender may be losing by terminating your mortgage loan early.

Don’t forget that you will need to use two interest rates to calculate the interest rate differential. The interest rate assigned to your current mortgage and the interest rate currently available on a loan with the number of years left on your loan. In other words, if you are only 2 years through your current 5-year term mortgage loan you will need to factor in the interest rate you have been charged and a current interest rate on a 3-year mortgage term being offered now (three, being the number of years left on your loan). $200,000.00 x 3% (current rate) x 3 years left = $18,000.00 $200,000.00 x 2% (lender’s rate available for the next 3 years) x 3 years left = $12,000.00.

The difference is $6,000.00.

This represents the lost interest that could have been earned by the mortgage lender for the next 3 years, and thus your penalty to get out of your mortgage.

It is VERY important you thoroughly understand the mortgage you are getting.

y young obsession with hockey and starting out uneducated about basic training and nutrition fundamentals inspired me to read and research. I attended university to earn degrees that established me as a strength and conditioning coach. I had a quick ascension up the ranks of my profession, culminating in employment with the Anaheim Ducks and their minor league team.

I thought I had everything I could want in a career by the age of 27.

It’s a funny thing when you reach your goal. Where do you go after that? Most people work hard at maintaining where they are. Some decide to look for a new challenge, to move onto something else. I admire that type of person. He or she is satisfied with what they have achieved and aren’t afraid to set out on another quest. It could be in the same profession, but with a new company or starting their own. Others make a complete change and pursue something altogether different from the professional success they’ve enjoyed.

I saw the way the guys struggled with addictions, whether it was painkillers or other prescription meds, over-the-counter medications, or alcohol and drugs. For some players, unfortunately, it was all the above.

To the outside world, I was excelling. Inside, I was so conflicted.

I certainly didn’t feel fulfilled. I felt I lacked purpose, and I didn’t like the revolving door of relationships with the players. I wanted to do more but was not allowed. I felt as if I was selling myself, and that those I did serve were served short.

When I was dismissed from the Anaheim Ducks organization, I could resonate with that loss of identity. I was still a strength and conditioning coach, but I no longer worked in the NHL, so I felt it diminished my self-worth.

As you have seen with every pillar we have explored so far in High Performance Living, a person has a broad spectrum to choose from when they try to determine where they fit with any specific pillar. Career is no different. There are various categories to choose from when you think about where you are in your career. You could be: • Happy in your career and looking to advance.

• Wanting to change careers completely.

• Considering your job as temporary while deciding what you want to do.

• Starting your own business.

• Seeing no reason to get out of bed because you hate your job.

A common assessment for most people regarding their career is: do they like it, do they feel fulfilled, and do they feel they receive fair compensation? This ends up being a sticking point that plagues many people. Are you doing what you want to do or are you doing what you have to do?

Often, we end up taking a job for the money. We say it is temporary until we find the job we really want.

Well, twenty years later, with kids in college and retirement closer, we’re still in the same job. I know someone who loves golf and was good at it. His goal in college was to retire at 45 and play golf for the rest of his life. He became a very successful hedge fund manager and his wealth skyrocketed.

He got married and had two kids.

Forty-five was not that far away. He owned three houses and a place in New York City. Something happened around forty years old, though. Both children developed serious medical conditions. Suddenly, instead of

retiring, he needed to keep making money to support his kids’ medical needs and, quite frankly, he and his wife enjoyed their lifestyle. So, someone who is financially sound can also find themselves “stuck” in a career. When we talked about the relationship pillar, I primarily wanted you to think about the relationship you have with people. Now, though, think about the relationship you have with your job or career. If you love it and you are content, fantastic. If you aren’t, you do have to come to terms with how you think about your career and what to do with it.

I have never met someone who hated their job and loved their life.

It’s impossible if you’re striving for organic happiness. Change is possible and absolutely necessary, especially if it’s going to affect your overall well-being.

As you contemplate your career, I challenge you to focus on what you do in your job on a daily basis.

Don’t worry about how much money you make, what others would think if you switched careers, if you pursued a big promotion, or if your standard of living changed. Initially, pretend your career is sitting in a glass case untouched by any other considerations.

To have an accurate and authentic evaluation of how you feel about your career, write down the first descriptive words that come to mind when you think about it. What is your “gut feeling” or first response? Then evaluate your thoughts and feelings and begin to put a plan together to get where you want to be.

After reflecting on these questions, consider other factors to unpack related to the direction you want your career to take. Money, location, amount of work, travel requirements, etc. can all come into play. Constantly refer to your values as the filter to examine all parts of your career.

1. What emotion do you attach to your career?

2. Do you control your career or does your career control you?

3. Make a list of things you like about your career.

4. Do the “con” list – what don’t you like about your career?

For so many of us, life goes 200 mph, and we never take the time to reflect on any of the eight pillars. I think this is especially true in our careers. You might have some vague notion you’re meant for more or your dream job isn’t exactly what you thought, the same as I did when working for the Ducks. Reflect on your career without making any rash decisions.

Such periodic reflection allows you to make the adjustments you need to meet your goals regarding your career. As a human being, you change. What might be true today in your career could be different five years from now or even next year. Don’t think how you feel now, or how you felt when your career began. Indeed, many people who feel “trapped” in their job think change is not an option.

Allow yourself the freedom to consider what your true calling is.

Don’t judge yourself as you search.

If you love what you do, then you can ring the bell because that’s a satisfying feeling. Don’t feel bad, though, if you aren’t all that happy about how you are making a living.

“Pommier Jewellers September Sports Mom” Allison Giroux

September’s Mom of the Month, Allison Giroux, teaches Kindergarten at North Stormont Public School. Her boys, Connor (11) and Jordan (9) keep her hopping with their involvement in many sports activities, including hockey, baseball, soccer, basketball, swimming, and football. “Connor has a much more competitive side,” she says, “where Jordan is just happy to be participating and socializing.”

Allison is no stranger to athletics herself. “I have played many sports, starting with soccer at the age of 3, followed by an all-boys baseball team, and figure skating,” Allison says. “I wanted to play hockey like my older brother, so I joined the Girls Hockey Association when I was 7.

My teams participated at the Provincial Championships in Mississauga several times, coming home with Gold and Silver medals.”

Allison’s favourite sport was, and still is, softball. She played fastball with the Kinsmen Girls Fastball League through her minor years.

In 1999, she was a walk-on at Durham College, where she earned an athletic scholarship, won Rookie of the Year, a Team Leadership Award and 3 OCAA Championships. In 2017, she and her team were inducted into the Durham College Sports Hall of Fame.

Allison continues to play slo-pitch, where she has competed in many championships, including Provincials, Nationals, and Canadians. “I have been lucky to have been a member of some pretty amazing teams over the years,” she says. “Some memorable moments are winning Provincials with the Bombers (COED C 2008), Victorious Secret (Women’s C 2012), Bat Po’s (Women’s 35+ Masters 2017) and winning World’s with DQ (Women’s C & B 2013/2014) and the Lady Mets (Women’s A 2015).

Allison has scaled back her own athletics to concentrate on her children’s. “I enjoy the love my children get from their participation in sports,” she says. “There is no place I would rather be than at the rink or field watching practices or games with my kids. I was fortunate enough to coach my youngest son’s baseball and hockey teams the past couple of years, and to be a team manager and minor hockey official.”

Celebrities in the Combative Arts

By Jim Riddell, Seaway Karate Club The martial arts industry has seen considerable growth over the past several decades, with an estimated 3.6 billion practitioners worldwide training in Karate, Taekwondo, Judo, Jiu-jitsu, and numerous other combative art styles. With so many people involved, it only stands to reason that some of them would be well-known celebrities.

There have been many actors who have done a few months of intense training to pick up a skillset for their next movie, but the people that I have chosen for this list are actors, musicians, athletes, and politicians who have, for the most part, been quietly training in the martial arts for years. This list is far from complete, but there are a couple of Cornwall connections included.

The fighting style of James Bond varied depending on which actor was playing 007. Sean Connery, the original Bond, was a former Mr. Universe who held a Black Belt in Karate and he did most of his own stunts. Roger Moore and Peirce Brosnan had minimal fighting skills, which were taken into consideration during the movies that they starred in. Daniel Craig, who has been the current Bond since 2005, is highly skilled in Krav Maga and does many of his own stunts.

Ashton Kutcher grew up in Iowa where wrestling is extremely popular - he later switched to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and is currently a Purple Belt. Jessica Alba and Jessica Biel both hold Black Belts in Taekwondo with most of Biel’s expertise coming from her long history as a kickboxer. Jennifer Aniston and Courtney Cox both train in Budokon, which is a combination of Karate and Yoga. Lucy Lui from Charlie’s Angles trains in Kali and Silat, which is a hardcore open-hand style often incorporating knife-fighting techniques. Canadian actress Catherine Winnick is a

3rd degree Black Belt in Taekwondo who has won Silver at the Canadian Nationals. Our first Cornwall connection, Ryan Gosling, who grew up in this city, trains in Krav Maga.

Several well-known musicians are Black Belts that train regularly. Willie Nelson is a 5th degree in TKD and Phil Collen of Def Leppard is a Karate BB who also trains in Krav Maga. David Mustoain, co-founder and lead vocalist of Megadeth is a BB in both Karate and TKD. David Lee Roth of Van Halen has been involved in Karate and Kung Fu most of his life and he enjoys teaching classes.

Several NHL players train in some form of combative art during the off-season.

Milan Lucic has done some boxing in the past and goaltender Robin Lehner does MMA, while Zdeno Chara trains the entire summer with elite Greco Roman wrestlers in Czechoslovakia.

There are some interesting public figures who have a history with combative arts.

UFC broadcaster Joe Rogan is a former 4-time Massachusetts TKD champion who won the US Open Taekwondo Championship at 19 yrs. of age. Politicians in the combative arts is nothing new as former US Presidents George Washington and Abe Lincoln were both highly respected wrestlers in their time, while Teddy Roosevelt represented Harvard University in the boxing ring and later trained in both Judo and Jiu-jitsu. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who has been involved in Sambo and Judo since age 12, was awarded his 6th Dan in Judo at the Kodakan in Tokyo, Japan. Chantal Jovanno, who is France’s Junior Environmental Minister, holds a Karate Black Belt and is a 12-time National Champion. Pierre Elliott Trudeau, former Prime Minister of Canada, and father to Justin, was a 2nd degree Black Belt in Judo. Justin followed his father into politics but not Judo: instead, he took up boxing at Ali Nestor’s north end Montreal boxing gym.

In March of 2012, Justin Trudeau agreed to fight Conservative Senator Patrick Brazeau (a karate Black Belt) in a charity boxing match which would be televised. Brazeau dominated Trudeau in the 1st round, but Justin weathered the storm, took control of the second round, and stopped Brazeau in the 3rd. Many feel that the determination that Trudeau showed and the publicity created from the fight got him out of his father’s shadow and set him on the path to becoming the party leader. This is where our second local connection comes in: if you watch the Trudeau-Brazeau fight, you may recognize the guy giving Justin advise between rounds. There are several good boxing trainers in Montreal and Ottawa, but the person that Ali Nestor asked to help him work Justin Trudeau’s corner was our very own Jorge Luis from Champs Eastside Boxing, Cornwall.

With this I started my life long career in working in the restaurant business. For the last 34 years I have worked at Harv’s Diner where I have made many of my favorite recipes for the customers to enjoy. Hope you will enjoy my column and try some of my recipes. With gardens coming to frustration and plentiful let’s start with my Green Hamburg Relish.

12 large cucumbers 6 medium onions

Put cucumbers and onions in your food processor transfer to a large bowl and sprinkle with 1 tbsp of salt and let stand on the counter for 3 hours. Then drain off all excess fluid.

Green Hamburg Relish

Pour liquid ingredients over vegetables in a large pot. Bring to a boil and cook for approximately 5 minutes or till thick. Fill your sterilized jars to about 1/4 inch from the top. Wipe the rims of the jars to remove any food residue. Place the lids on the jars. In a large stock pot place a rack on the bottom or use a canning pot. Fill it halfway with water. Bring to a boiling point and then lower jars into the pot using thongs. Add more boiling water to . above the tops of the jars. At a full boil cover and process for 10 minutes.

Remove jars and place on a wood or cloth surface until cool. When cool press the top of each lid to ensure the seal is tight. Store in a cool place.

Cornwall SDG Paramedics spend their careers tending to your health, often in scary, sudden, or emergency incidents. You can help paramedics and other first responders do their jobs safely by moving over.

Ontario’s Move Over Law states that if you see an emergency vehicle or tow truck stopped on your side of the road with its lights flashing, you must: • Slow down: Slow down to less than the posted speed limit.

• Pass with caution: Proceed with caution.

• Move over: If the road has two or more lanes, you must move over and provide a lane of space between your vehicle and the emergency vehicle.

The penalties for failing to move over can include fines, demerit points, and even jail time. Here is a breakdown: • First offence: A fine between $400 and $2000, plus 3 demerit points.

• Additional offences: A fine between $1000 and $4000, possible jail time of up to 6 months, possible suspension of driver’s license for up to two years.

Being convicted of failing to move over can have an impact on your driving record and could cause your auto insurance premiums to increase as a result.

Tips for Reacting To Emergency Vehicles • Stay alert: Avoid driving distractions and keep your eyes on the road at all times.

• Be cautious: Always approach emergency vehicles with caution - you never know what could happen. Give them space to operate.

• Use your signals: Always use your signal when you intend to make a lane change to move over for emergency vehicles.

• No sudden movements: Avoid braking suddenly or making a sudden lane change. Check your blind spot and assess road conditions before changing direction or speed.

Smoking is a common cause of house fires in our community: many smokers choose to throw away their cigarettes improperly.

If the danger of fire wasn’t reason enough to be cautious when lighting up, consider that smoking is the number one of fatal home fires in Ontario. cause Earlier this year, 12 Cornwall residents were displaced due to a fire caused by careless discarding of smoking materials. This hardship was unnecessary and could have been avoided with the responsible disposal of cigarette butts.

You, or the smokers in your life, can take some simple actions to prevent fires and fire deaths: 1. Smoke outside.

2. Never smoke in bed.

3. Extinguish cigarettes in large, deep ashtrays that can’t be knocked over.

4. Empty ashes into a metal container (NOT the garbage can) and put the container outside.

5. Do not extinguish cigarettes in plant pots. Plant pots often contain peat moss, shredded wood, and bark which can easily ignite.

6. To prevent smoking fires, you must be alert. You will not be alert if you are sleepy, have consumed alcohol, drugs, or medicine that makes you drowsy.

7. If people have been smoking in your home, check behind chair and sofa cushions for cigarette butts before going to bed.

8. Ensure that smoke alarms are installed on every storey of your home and outside of sleeping areas.

Question: The hockey world is mourning the death of Dale Hawerchuk. Many consider him to be the all-time best player to have worn a Cornwall Royals jersey. What is your favorite Dale Hawerchuk moment?

Peter Collins - Sports Enthusiast - Picking a Dale Hawerchuk moment isn’t easy because there were so many of those moments. What stood out about Dale and what made him special is that on almost every shift, he gave us moments to remember.

Drafting 16-year old hockey players has never been an exact science, and the 1979 OHL priority draft proves that point. The thirteen players drafted in 1979, the best young players in all of Ontario, went on to play 2,455 games in the NHL. Nearly 50% of those NHL games, 1,188 to be exact, were played by a then undersized phenomenon from Toronto named Dale Hawerchuk. When the Cornwall Royals made the sixth choice in the first round of the 1979 OHL priority draft, only a few hockey insiders knew the potential that young Hawerchuk possessed.

That would change dramatically when he led the underdog Royals to two consecutive Memorial Cups. Two years after joining the Royals, Dale was taken first overall in the 1981 NHL draft, by the Winnipeg Jets. Twenty years later, after a storied 16-year NHL career, he was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

What he brought to Cornwall was excitement; a combination of dogged determination and a hockey skill level that was off the charts. His stay in Cornwall was brief, but his lasting effect on the community was felt for years. He made us proud because he was one of us and he helped put Cornwall on the Junior hockey map. At a time in our history when the economy was down and factories were closing, Dale gave us hope!

Thanks, Dale - RIP. Jake Lapierre - Conditioning Coach - The name “Dale Hawerchuk” is easily recognized in Canada and is synonymous with names like Gretzky, Lemieux, Messier, Hull, and many others in the hockey world. I knew of Dale Hawerchuk when he played for the Royals, but I didn’t have the opportunity to see him play in Cornwall. Dale’s hockey skill spoke for itself on the ice and he was also described as a real down-toearth guy off the ice.

Former Royal, Jim Kyte payed tribute to Dale in an interview in SJHockeyNow . “He set the example for how to treat the fans. Without the fans, we don’t have a job. But I remember him as being one of the nicest guys you’d ever want to meet. He always took the time with fans.

He spoke to everybody. He was not dismissive of anyone. [He was] down-to-earth, caring. A great teammate, a great captain.”

I became a fan of Dale’s during his career in Winnipeg; my favourite Dale Hawerchuk moment is the 1987 Russia/Canada series; playing with players like Gretzky, Lemieux, Messier, Gilmour, Sutter, etc. and Dale was named MVP of the winning game.

Jim Riddell - Seaway Karate Club - Dale Hawerchuk had a very accomplished hockey career complete with many memorable moments. He led Team Canada to win Gold at the World Juniors, he won back-to-back Memorial Cups with the Cornwall Royals, and he won the Stafford Smythe Trophy as Memorial Cup MVP. Hawerchuk was drafted 1st overall by the Winnipeg Jets and he went on to play 16 seasons in the NHL, scoring 1409 points in 1188 games. He was a member of Canada Cup winning teams in 1987 and again in 1991, and he was inducted into the HOF in 2001.

There are many memories to be had of Dale Hawerchuk, but my top moment may be a bit unique as he wasn’t even there for it! Last February, the Montreal Canadiens Alumni were in town to play the Choose Cornwall Legends at the Civic Complex. The Benson Group, through Dave Murphy, had donated a Cornwall Royals #10 Hawerchuk jersey that would be signed by the players on both teams and presented to Dale later.

During the pre-game “meet and greet” in the salons, I had just finished a Sports Energy interview with Alumni coach Chris “Knuckles” Nilan, when Dave brought the jersey in to be signed. I got to watch each Hab sign it and then say a few words about Dale to the player seated next to him as he passed it on. Coach Nilan, who was at the end of the line, was the last to sign it and he did a very nice video presentation which Dale would get along with the Royals Jersey. Many of those players had played against Dale Hawerchuk at some point in their NHL careers and the respect that everyone had for him was quite evident.

hen Elburn Duffy looks back on the grim horrors of the Korean War, he still doesn’t hesitate to say he would volunteer to fight on the front lines all over again.

“We knew why we were there, to help make a better country,” he says.

The RCR’s would see its first engagement in the Attack on ChailLi, a location vital to the Chinese supply line. Duffy, a Bren gunner, was part of “D” Company’s advance against communist Chinese forces.

Shannon Champagne Awarded Master Trainer status

hannon Champagne, owner of Cornwall’s A Lil’ Pole Fitness, has been awarded Master Trainer status by the Canadian Pole Fitness Association. Champagne is one of only four Master Trainers in Canada, and with this status, she is now qualified to certify pole fitness instructors. As the only one of the four Master Trainers who is bilingual, her responsibilities with the association will include the province of Quebec.

When doing an evaluation to certifying a candidate as an instructor, Champagne will travel to wherever their location may be, inspecting it for proper and safe setup. The person must have achieved a certain amount of experience and pass a test with practical, written, and theory components.

Shannon also judges at pole fitness competitions and is qualified to judge at the national level.

So how did Shannon become involved in pole fitness? “I was involved in competitive hip-hop dancing for about ten years, travelling to competitions anywhere from Niagara Falls to Quebec City. I loved to dance and had also taught Zumba for about six years. I wanted something that would be fun, tighten and tone, and improve strength. So, when I found out about pole fitness, it was exactly that! I started travelling to Ottawa weekly to attend classes.

When I saw an opportunity to teach pole and bring it to Cornwall, I didn’t hesitate.”

her venue was well-received right from the beginning, and it has continued to grow. “There was a bit of a stigma that followed the pole, but I was known in the local fitness field from being a Zumba instructor and a personal trainer.”

Gerry E. Samson: Recipient of the Governor General’s Order of Merit

I

n 1996, Governor General Romeo Leblanc awarded the Order of Merit of the Police Force to Gerry E. Samson.

It is a fellowship of honor based on the highest qualities of citizenship service to Canada, to the police community, and to humanity at large.

Known as an exemplary officer, Gerry E. Samson served with the Cornwall Police from 1976 to 2004. Samson was born into a family whose altruism and generosity values are deeply rooted: his mother was a Big Sister who was on the Board of Directors and his father received an award in 1984 for having four sons who became Big Brothers themselves: a first in Canada!

All his life, Gerry dedicated his energy to helping children who needed guidance, emotional support, and improved living conditions. He started Big Brothers in Cornwall in 1973 with his friends Angelo Toundail, Ken Slitter,

and Ray Jodoin. By 1974, he was a member of the organization’s Board of Directors. Big Brother to two young boys for 15 years, he sponsored a total of fourteen boys who in turn became Big Brothers. Meanwhile, as a police officer, he raised $5000.00 trough the Jail and Bail program, money that went to support the Canadian Cancer Society.

Samson was also very proactive in sports, coaching minor hockey, Junior B, and baseball for fifteen years and refereeing ODHA hockey for twentyfive years.

Samson also held tenure for twentyone years with several schoolboards, seventeen of which were with the SGD Roman Catholic Separate School Board with a stint as Vice Chairman. In 2004, he was elected School Board Trustee for the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario in Kemptville for four years.

Over a ten-year period, Samson also raised $4000.00 for the Children’s

Treatment Center.

who were having difficulties early in their development. The practice back then was that doctors would notify schools when they would see a young patient who was experiencing a speech or visual handicap so that a plan to address the handicap by the time the child arrived in school could be set up.

To do this, he petitioned the provincial government for funding to hire the best speech therapists from France and from Windsor University to provide services in French and in English. He says that to convince them to come to Cornwall after their graduation, instead of Toronto, he would hire the best students even before they graduated.

In 2012, Samson was elected Cornwall City Councillor in a byelection, and he served the City until 2014. As a member of City Council, he worked with his colleagues to bring the Target warehouse (now

the Walmart Warehouse), Smart Centres which include: Sportec, Best Buy, Michaels, and Winners to the area, along with major condo housing on Second Street and Sydney Street. He says one of their major accomplishments was the twenty-fivemillion-dollar Wastewater Treatment Plant, which was the construction of a huge sanitation and filtration system that spreads up to Maxville.

Whether he was on the Board of Directors as a police officer or as a Big Brother, Gerry always had the same high standard: he treated everyone with respect, diligence, and compassion. It is Gerry’s endless devotion to his fellow citizens and a strong desire to help those less fortunate that earned him the respect of the community, and a lifetime recognition from the Vice King of the country.

Lloyd Chaput Wins the SYC 2019 Fall Series Sailboat Race

5-year old Lloyd Chaput and his crew claimed another victory in the Fall of 2019, adding to an already long list of accomplishments. In 1998, Chaput was inducted into the Hall of Fame in the Sailing and Yachting category, but Lloyd did not stop there: he continued an outstanding pursuit of victories and sailing championships.

Lloyd is a member of the Canadian Power and Sail Cornwall Squadron since 1977, and he was Commander of the squadron for over ten years, until 2019 when the organization went through a restructuring movement.

Lloyd Chaput was born in Mattawa in 1939. He graduated from Ryerson Institute of Technology and attended University of Ottawa as well.

In 1961, he married Elizabeth (Betty), the third of a nine-children-family who grew up in Cornwall. The Chaput’s have three children: Jo Ann, works as Director of Disease Management at Cornwall Community Hospital, John works with oil and LNG projects, and Jody, who is a former teacher assistant and a youth supervisor, now works at Home Depot in

Pembroke. Lloyd and Betty also have five grandchildren, future sailors as well.

The Chaput family joined the Stormont Yacht Club in 1970 and have since been active members who promote youth sailing and racing. Betty, along with Nick Cox, was involved in the Junior Sailing Program and she is still on the Race Committee.

She also won the SYC Seagull Award in 2000, presented to the member who has contributed significantly through long-term service and commitment.

Over the years, Lloyd was elected Commodore, Vice-Commodore, Fleet Captain, Director, and President of the Board of Directors of SYC. He was involved in the digging of the McCoy and the Mac Bay, and the construction and installation of part of the infrastructure of the Club House, with all the services that made it the beautiful club house that we have today.

These are major accomplishments by SYC Pioneers, sometimes overlooked and taken for granted by the new generation.

Throughout the years, Lloyd surrounded himself with a solid crew of sailors: his wife Betty, his son John, daughters Jo Ann and Jody, Nick Cox, Bob Earle, and the

His racing highlights include the following championships: the Albacore Class 10 Championship in 1976 and 1984; the Tanzer 22 Class Championship in 1986 and 1996; the Laser Class Championship in 1980, 1996, and 1997; the Open Handicap Racing Championship series overall winner in 1986, 1987, 1992, 1996, 1997; the Borland Memorial Race Champion 1986, 1996, 1999, and 2007; the Sails and Paddles 1996, 2003; the SYC Racer/Sailor of the Year 1987; the Spring Series Champion 1997; the 24-Hour Race (113 miles) 1984/ Albacore; the Upper Canada Village Trophy 1995, 1996, 1999, 2007; and the 1979 Albacore Harry Hertz trophy Lloyd Chaput remains unbeatable. He won the SYC 2019 Fall Series with his crew: Bob Earle, Darin Merriman, and grand-son Michael Chaput. When asked what the secret is behind all these fabulous victories, Lloyd responds with a small grin, “Knowing the river and reading the currents” while Betty adds, “A good trusted crew as well.”

Jim Riddell’s Sports Talk with Area Seniors Bob Piteau

ob Piteau has been involved in various sports in the Cornwall area for well over a half century.

Born in Windsor, ON in 1940, Bob and his family moved to Cornwall in 1952. Bob’s father, who was a Cornwall native employed by Chrysler in Windsor, decided to return home, and open his own business.

Bob attended St. Lawrence High School and he played on the basketball and football teams, as well as competed in the high jump, broad jump, and pole vault events at track and field meets.

Following high school, Bob played 2 seasons for Cornwall Emards, a team that competed in the Quebec Sr. Football League. During the early 60’s, Bob and a few friends travelled to Montreal to play semi-pro lacrosse. “Billy Ingram, Tubby Legault, the Faubert brothers, and I played down there until the league folded.”

Basketball was another sport that he continued with after high school, playing a few years in the city league, and then coaching a team of 17-20 yr. old boys from Cornwall’s Classical College. Bob then took up refereeing basketball at local high schools.

“Moe Racine had been refereeing basketball and I took over from Moe, doing games at R-O, North Dundas DSH, and at Seaway DHS in Iroquois. Some games were played in Morrisburg and space was tight in the gym. People would be lined up against the walls and the referee had to be careful to avoid getting tripped.”

Growing up, Bob played hockey in Cornwall’s OCOT (Our Citizens of Tomorrow) League, later playing in the Paper Mill League. He played for many years with Sunday morning and Friday afternoon groups, explaining that there were some very good players in those groups. Around 1975, an old group of friends got together and formed the Cornwall Old-timers, a team that played in tournaments across Ontario and Quebec, as well as competing once in a CARHA World Tournament in Vancouver BC. The hockey club was also involved in events that raised money for various charities.

“We started Cornfest - we had dunking tanks, a parade, professional magicians, and bands. The youngest player on our team, Hank Greggain was “King Cob” the mascot. Our theme song was the one from The Beverley Hillbillies and I had to contact someone from the show to get the rights to use it at Cornfest. Thanks to Bingley Steel who helped us out in many different ways - they even manufactured our BBQ’s for us. We sold hundreds of dozens of corn each year, all purchaced from local growers.

Roger Leger was the Molson rep and he played on our team. Roger looked after the kegs and we were pumping as much beer at that time as they were at the Highland Games. Cornfest eventually got too big for us to handle and we eventually turned it over to the Downtown Merchants Association to run.”

Bob started an annual golf tournament with help from Bill Dickey, Billy Smith (NHL HOF goalie), Paul Boosamara, Bruce Wickens, Nolan Quinn, and

Photo Submitted Bruce Grant. The proceeds from this tournament went to assisting local cancer patients with transportation costs while getting treatment in Ottawa.

In 1960, Bob started working for Buntin-Reid Wholesale Paper Merchants, a subsidiary of Domtar.

Bob worked out of the Ottawa office with a territory in Northern Ontario. “I did a lot of driving in those days; my clients were school boards, colleges and universities. I went to up north once a month to Kirkland Lake, Timmins, Kapuskasing, and North Bay. I had my hockey equipment in the trunk of my car and when in North Bay I would skate with the team at Canadore College.”

In 1985, Bob was transferred to the Hamilton office where he looked after school boards in Southern Ontario. Bob continued taking his equipment on the road and when in Guelph he often suited up with the Guelph University Griffins.

The Piteau family lived in Burlington where Bob played hockey on two teams. “There were about 500 people in the old-timer’s hockey there with several different divisions. I also played with the Burlington Blades which was a very good tournament team.

I was on a line with Murray Hall who had played several seasons in the NHL with Chicago, Detroit, and Vancouver. Another teammate, Warren Hines had played with the Montreal Jr. Canadiens and then went to the AHL. We had a few others that had played at a high level.”

In 1992 Bob returned to Cornwall when he was transferred back to the Ottawa office, where he worked until his retirement in 1998. He re-joined the Cornwall Old-timers and continued to play with them until having a hip replacement in 2010.

Bob joined the Cornwall Golf and Country Club in 1967 and, except for his seven years in Burlington, has been a member ever since.

In 1962 Bob and Beverley Wilson married.

Beverley taught school for thirty-six years and they have two sons, Todd and Chad. Bob summed up his long involvement on the local sporting scene saying, “I have met and played with many great people over the years. I had the opportunity to coach both of my sons in hockey and lacrosse. Everything has been a real pleasure”.

CFL Shutdown - SIGH!

’m enjoying the “return to play” of the major sports in North America.

Even

though the Stanley Cup will be handed to an American team, NHL finals games will be played in Canada for only the second time in a decade. We’ve all heard the Maple Leafs jokes, that it’s been a long time since there was a Canadian team winning a playoff round in Toronto. As a long-time Maple Leafs fan, even I was amused by that one.

It does feel somewhat surreal at times to be watching the NHL and NBA and having the games matter in August.

I’m really enjoying the Toronto Blue Jays. Their young, talented stars are starting to shine through. They’re competing well and have a legitimate shot at the post-season if they keep playing as well as they have been. They’re having a solid season without their top prospect in Bo Bichette. We’ve only seen a glimpse of the greatness to come from Bichette.

It’ll be entertaining to watch a full and healthy Blue Jays roster when he returns from injury.

It’s also been fun, albeit limited, to have some local sporting events return. The Cornwall Motor Speedway has entertained excited local racing fans all summer long. Boys baseball has been playing some games. Girls softball had a fun-day where some new girls got to try out the sport. Even minor hockey is starting back up.

I’m convinced we’re closer to the end of this than the beginning.

I know I’ll be cherishing and soaking in as much youth sports as I can as a coach and a father once we do “get back to normal”. I think we’ve all learned not to take anything for granted and that we have to enjoy life while we can.

here are many who will mumble, “Who cares!” about the announcement that professional football in Canada was cancelled. Yet, the reality is much more than simply casting aside a sporting event because of COVID-19.

No CFL Football is a huge loss to a part of Canadiana. I can draw on many reasons the game will be missed, most are personal memories that find me living in the past again. Nothing strange about that with historian minded types like me, because the past is often our future.

And what about those fans?

I grew up understanding that football was a release for the hard-working factory types, the doting housewives, and doctors and lawyers so passionate about their teams. There are still many alive today who can remember making that weekend drive to Ottawa or Montreal, just to get away from it all, a way to release the burdens of work and providing for their families in those so called simpler times.

Make no mistake, the CFL being caught up in the COVID-19 season of 2020 and being forced to shut down all hope of playing, is a dark day in Canadian sports. • It seems like the “sport bubble” concept is working well as the NWSL and MLS completed their start-up season with no COVID-19 cases reported. The NBA and NHL are into the second round of the playoffs and they also have no cases to report. Major League Baseball is not using the “bubble” concept and has had several games postponed due to COVID-19 cases.

• The NHL play-in round was not kind to hub city hosts Toronto or Edmonton, and it was tough to see teams like Winnipeg, Pittsburgh, and Nashville get eliminated early. Ski Walking at Summerstown Trails

es, the first snowfall is still many months away, but now is the time to think about pre-season preparation for the cross-country ski season.

With this in mind, the Friends of the Summerstown Trails (FOTST) will be offering a new program this year called ski walking.

One-hour sessions will be offered every Sunday throughout the fall at 10:00 a.m., starting September 13th at the trailhead parking lot. The sessions will be led by FOTST member René Sauvé, a certified NCCP instructor who says that “cross-country skiers are built in the fall.” René also leads the Jackrabbit and Learn-to-Ski programs in the wintertime for the Summerstown Coyote Nordic Club.

As the name implies, there will be lots of walking involved with ski walking, but it will be walking with a XC skiing purpose. Some of the exercises for the participants include walking with poles, ski walking, ski striding, ski hopping, etc. Dynamic stretching movements and balance exercises will also be part of the program.

very pleased with the addition of this program. “This is the first time that FOTST will offer programming outside the winter season, and we thank René for leading this new initiative.” He also went on to add, “In these times of physical distancing, the width of our trails and being outdoors allows us to apply the measures recommended by the health authorities. But remember to bring your mask for the intro part.”

This program will be free for FOTST members and for kids aged 12 and under. A one-time registration fee of $10 will apply to all other participants.

The only recommendation is that ski walkers bring their own set of walking poles or ski poles. Disinfected ski poles will be available for those who don’t have any. For more information and to register, visit the FOTST website at www.summerstowntrail.com.

In recent years, an impressive amount of progress has been made, especially with the addition of a new parking lot on County Rd. 27; also, trails have been improved and expanded and new grooming equipment and signage installed. A portion of the snowshoe trails are now groomed for fat biking.

Many activities are offered, such as races, instructional lessons, outings for schools, and seniors and Family Day activities. Rental of XC ski and snowshoe packages and fat bikes is also offered on weekends. The Summerstown Trails are located on Summerstown Road, 1.6 km north of exit 804 of the 401.
