LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR As CSEE Certification participants are aware, the NASC conducted a complete review and restructuring of the course of study. A number of changes are being implemented, including: • Our first online course, Strategic Planning for Successful Sport Tourism, launched last month. More than 100 individuals registered for the course.

• A commitment to at least one new online course every year with a target of two.

• Moving to a credit system; this will allow different numbers of credits for a variety of learning events.

• Establishment of a higher level of certification by early 2017.

• Establishment of a partnership with Ohio University to provide expertise in online learning and reviews of each live learning session.

We are excited about this restructuring and the resulting more focused program leading to certification.

Member Services Update – NASC Blog We are excited to announce that the NASC blog, Get in the Game, rolled out onto a new platform in February. The blog is now housed within the NASC website, www.SportsCommissions.org.

The Association will be providing even more timely and relevant content than ever before, including posts on industry trends and news, updates from the National Office, and bi-weekly Tips from the Mentoring Committee. Blog posts are also featured in Get in the Game eNews, which is distributed each Thursday. We encourage you to subscribe to the blog to receive instant notifications when a new post is published.

call for volunteers I am excited to invite all members of the NASC to volunteer on committees.

This is YOUR association, so I strongly encourage you to consider getting involved in one of these rewarding opportunities.

If you have never volunteered before, you will find that this is a great way to give back to our association and build close relationships with peers in the industry. Your talents, passion, leadership and input are crucial to the NASC and it helps us to build effective, vibrant, inclusive, and multicultural committees.

The NASC is driven by more than 100 committed members who volunteer their time and resources for the good of the organization. Participating on a committee allows you to contribute to the decision-making that positions the NASC as the most valuable resource available to sport tourism professionals.

Here is how you can get involved: • Refer industry colleagues to join the Association • Recommend educational content and programming for the annual NASC Sports Event Symposium, the original conference and longest-running reverse tradeshow for the sport tourism industry • Enhance mentoring activities for new members and first time Symposium attendees • Establishing new categories and serving on judging panels for the annual member awards • Developing CSEE modules • Creating the inaugural NASC Sports Legacy Fund community service project Members, including new committee members and those who currently serve, must respond to the call for volunteers by April 15, 2016. Volunteers must commit to participating on standing conference calls each month.

Awards Committee The Awards Committee is responsible for developing award categories and criteria for the annual NASC Member Awards.

The committee also serves as judges for the various categories.

Membership Committee The Membership Committee oversees membership retention and recruitment. The committee contacts inactive and cancelled members on behalf of the association to encourage them to renew. The committee also evaluates membership benefits and resources on an annual basis.

Mentoring Committee The Mentoring Committee cultivates relationships with new members to help guide them through their first year of membership. The committee is also responsible for planning and hosting first time attendee activities at the annual Symposium. Pre-requisites: Committee members must have a minimum of five years of industry experience and be actively involved in the NASC. Professional Education Committee The Professional Education Committee assists with the development and implementation of the CSEE Certification and other NASC educational programs including a proposed new and higher level of professional certification. Committee members are required to join and fully participate in monthly committee calls, assist in the development of each live and online course and continually evaluate the program.

Pre-requisites: Must be enrolled in the CSEE Certification and must have taken at least three CSEE courses, two live and one online. The online requirement can be met by taking the online core course in strategic planning in the summer of 2016.

Sports Legacy Committee The Sports Legacy Committee manages the Sports Legacy Fund. The committee establishes the criteria and eligibility requirements for beneficiaries of the fund and selects the beneficiary each year. The committee also coordinates all aspects of the annual fundraiser, including promotion, solicitation of donation items, and ticket sales, as well as equipment donations.

Symposium Committee The Symposium Committee assists in the planning and execution of the annual NASC Sports Event Symposium.

Committee members are required to join and fully participate in monthly committee calls, recruit event owners, develop education sessions including review of topics, examination of proposals, selection of speakers, and promote the Symposium through word of mouth marketing to industry peers and colleagues.

5 easy steps to ensure a successful NASC Sports Marketplace Experience

1) Research While anxiously awaiting to receive your confirmed individual appointment schedule, continue to research and prepare. Keep in mind that if an individual appointment is unable to be scheduled, you will still have an opportunity to request event overview appointments.

Destinations should research: • types of events the event owner can offer • what facilities are needed • when is the next open date for a community to host the event • potential event RFPS that are posted on the NASC website in the Event RFP Database Event Owners should research: • types of services destinations can offer • what facilities are available Vendors should research: • types of events the event owner can offer • what services are needed • any existing partnerships that destinations or event owners have with other vendors 2) Prepare Remember that there will be an opportunity to have up to 42 individual scheduled appointments and 12 Event Owner appointments, an you will also have the chance to meet and communicate with other organizations throughout the course of the Symposium - so be sure to pack a lot of the following: Promotional materials - If you don’t already have one, prepare a one or two page promotional flyer or brochure to share during each appointment. Don’t weigh each other down with a lot of promotional material. Keep in mind that organizations have dozens of appointments throughout the week.

Business cards – Bring lots of them!

Invite – If you didn’t get an appointment, don’t fret! Reach out to your top prospects, and invite them to join you at one of the many networking opportunities on the schedule during the week or treat them to dinner on the open evening.

3) Ask good questions during individual appointments • Ask qualifying questions like: “What makes a great event in a community?”, “Who have you had success with?”, “What year are you planning for?”, and “Do you have other events that you represent?”.

• Leave time for back and forth Q & A. During your conversation, you realize that you don’t have much in common. Don’t stop asking questions. Find out if they have

regional events, clinics and camps, or business meetings.

Though your destination may not fit one event, there are other opportunities, so explore and find out more as this opens doors to future business.

4) LISTEN during event overview appointments • Event overview appointments offer event owners the opportunity to share information about their organization and what it takes to host an event with destinations whom they have not done business.

• These appointments will take place at tables in the Sports Marketplace, not at the event owner’s booth.

• Up to five (5) destinations and/or vendor exhibitors will be seated at a table with one event owner.

• The event owner will provide information on what it takes to host their event and may allow a minute or two at the end of the 1o-minute appointment for questions.

5) Follow-up • It is essential to take good notes during each appointment so that you remember the details as you will have countless conversations.

• Follow up in a timely manner with each appointment after the Symposium.

• Do what you say you will do. During the appointment, if you say you will send additional information within a week after the Symposium, be sure to follow through.

No matter your membership category, become familiar with the organizations you want to be sure to meet in Grand Rapids. As appointment time in the Sports Marketplace is limited, doing our research will provide us the opportunity to learn more about each organization during valuable appointment time.

Follow these 5 easy steps, and you will have a successful NASC Sports Events Symposium.

Mom Gets Back Into Sports through Mary Free Bed Program

Editor’s note: Leading up to the NASC Symposium, the NASC is highlighting adaptive sports athletes. The proceeds raised for the 2016 NASC Sports Legacy Fund will go toward offsetting expenses for the Mary Free Bed Wheelchair Adaptive Sports tennis program, which provides equipment to individuals who choose to participate in adaptive sports, as the equipment required to participate can be quite expensive. For example, the average wheelchair required for wheelchair tennis can range from $3,000 to $5,000, not including maintenance and upkeep costs. Below is Suzanne Egeler’s story.

Suzanne Egeler is a 44 year old mother of four girls. She has been involved with Mary Free Bed Wheelchair and Adaptive Sports for almost 14 years.

Suzanne got involved in the sports programs shortly after her third daughter was born. “I was really discouraged with my weight gain and asked my doctor at Mary Free Bed what he suggested I do to lose some weight,” said Suzanne, continuing, “His immediate and enthusiastic answer was TENNIS!” Suzanne met with a recreational therapist and tried out a few different activities…swimming, wheelchair racing, basketball, handcycling, and (yes) tennis.

She purchased a hand-cycle, which enabled her to go on bike rides with her husband and children.

“I’ve even done the 5/3 Riverbank 25k a couple of times,” she explained. “But tennis ended up being exactly what I needed to get motivated to exercise. After one tennis practice, I was hooked. Lots of cardio, great competition, and lasting friendships with other wheelchair-using athletes.”

Suzanne was always involved in sports from a young age and had forgotten how much fun exercising could be, with a group of friends. “I am so grateful to have Mary Free Bed Wheelchair Sports and all of the programs it provides.”

Mary Free Bed Wheelchair and Adaptive Sports Named 2016 Beneficiary of the NASC Sports Legacy Fund As announced in September, the 2016 beneficiary of the NASC Sports Legacy Fund is Mary Free Bed Wheelchair and Adaptive Sports. “Choosing Mary Free Bed Wheelchair and Adaptive Sports as the NASC Sports Legacy beneficiary means that our athletes are provided more opportunities to participate in the many sports we offer without a financial burden, allowing them to gain confidence, empowerment and life skills as individuals,” said Alicia Hass, sports coordinator at Mary Free Bed Wheelchair and Adaptive Sports.

Preview: The State of Sport Tourism Industry Report

At this year’s NASC Sports Event Symposium, we will share the results of the industry report: The State of Sport Tourism conducted by Dr. Heather Lawrence-Benedict, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Sport Management, Department of Sports Administration at Ohio University.

Here is a preview of the major findings from the report which will be shared with the membership in Grand Rapids.

First, there continues to be solid growth in visitor spending the sport tourism industry. In 2014, the survey results indicated an estimated $8.96 billion in visitor spending related to sports events and 2015 estimated visitor spending was $9.45 billion.

Respondents to the survey represent a diverse group: • 27% of NASC members operate on a budget of $100,000 or less • Not too far behind are those who have a budget of $100,000-$250,000 • A total of 15% of respondents operate on a $1,000,000+ budget

• 19% and 17% fall into the $250,001-500,000 and $500,001-1,000,000 thresholds respectively In 2015, 59% of Sport Tourism organizations used room rebates, approximately 10% less than reported in 2013 and 2014.

The priorities of the Sport Tourism Industry have changed since last year. Visitor spending was once again voted to be the #1 priority this year, but groups have begun to differentiate their priorities across the board. In 2014, visitor spending was #1 by an overwhelming 60%. Visitor spending was #1 with 30%, followed by Health and Fitness and Sports Philanthropy, both with 19%.

More findings will be reported during the 2016 General Membership Meeting in Grand Rapids.

Keynote – Sam Kavanagh

Avalanche Survivor – Professional Cyclist – 2012 Paralympic Bronze Medalist to share personal story of surviving and thriving The NASC Symposium Committee is pleased to announce this year’s keynote presenter, Sam Kavanagh. An avid cyclist throughout his life, Sam dreamed of becoming a professional.

He vividly remembers one particular conversation with his wife where together they contemplated him taking a shot at this lifelong passion. Despite her support, he decided against.

He wasn’t built like a pro rider, he didn’t look the part. He didn’t see himself that way.

Not long thereafter, Sam joined a few friends on a backcountry skiing expedition in the mountains of Montana. A skilled outdoorsman, this sort of trip was nothing new to Sam, until tragedy struck. A massive avalanche swallowed up Sam and his friends, taking the life of one and leaving Sam with a severe compound fraction of both bones in his lower left leg.

Three friends escaped severe injury and scrambled to keep Sam alive, for over 48 hours, in sub-zero weather, out of radio range from any help.

Sam lost over half the total blood supply in his body, his kidneys shut down, infection set it and he went in shock. “I knew if I shut my eyes, that was it, I would die. We were cut off from help and I could barely move. It took everything I

had, and more than I ever knew I had to give, just to hang on,” said Sam. Eventually he and his friends were rescued, and Sam was airlifted to a regional hospital.

Despite nine surgeries in four months attempting to save his leg, too much damage had been done, and a new chapter in Sam’s life began, as an amputee. It was a physically and emotionally exhausting transition for an active outdoorsman like Sam.

Cycling then became part of his rehab and with the aid of a special prosthetic something remarkable happened. It made him feel whole again. Sam’s passion for riding had waned, but now, literally with a new lease on life and the first-hand perspective that it could be gone tomorrow, he pursued that passion like never before. He returned to the same conversation he had had with his wife about taking a shot at turning pro but this time the answer was a resounding, “I’m gonna find out!”

Sam poured himself into cycling, and into everything he did from that point on with the passion of a man who had cheated death and one who had every intention of living every moment to its fullest from that point forward. Small victories got bigger and bigger, and eventually, at the 2012 U.S. Paralympic Cycling Team Trials Sam won the competition and rode a time that would have earned him his pro classification in the able bodied competition. Only one rider, who had two legs, had beaten him. He had done with one leg, what he had previously thought he could not do with two.

Sam went on to win the bronze medal at the biggest international competition of his life, the 2012 London Paralympic Games. He now travels the country as a professional motivational and inspirational speaker.

His remarkable story was featured on The Discovery Channel’s, “I Shouldn’t Be Alive.” Sam is a civil engineer who lives in Bozeman, Montana with his wife Sara and two young children, Amelia and Nolan.
