A lasting legacy

S

ure life transcends sport and this past week has certainly been one of those moments, but a sporting environment can be the best place to heal strong pain. Waking last Friday to the news of Adelaide Crows coach Phil Walsh’s death defied belief. As fans we take sporting figures into our homes, which make such incidents even more distressing, but we don’t really know about their private lives. We may never know the reasons why, but once again tragedy has galvanised the resolve and compassion shown within the confines of a sporting club. A city, a state and a nation reeled as one over another sad loss within the realms of sport. South Australia has certainly experienced its fair share of sporting tragedy over the years with the loss of David Hookes, John McCarthy, Dean Bailey, Phil Hughes and now Walsh. Walsh’s passion for football was visible and he has left an indomitable mark on all he touched. Players and coaches who have gained invaluable exposure to his wealth of treasured

knowledge will never forget what they had learned in the little time he had been able to instil it. He was only just beginning a journey at the Adelaide Football Club that many believed would lead to success, but the life lessons he was teaching will make all those that have crossed his path better people. Although a quiet man, Walsh had that charisma about him that just drew inquisitive minds and he was quite willing to share his ever sought after thoughts. Upon his appointment to the senior job at the Crows, he declared his disdain for the media had been blown out of proportion but not by much. It was here, though, in front of the cameras where he started to shine, drawing a crowd of whoever wanted to listen. His loss has been felt across the whole sporting divide of Australia, but it is the football community that is lesser for his passing. However, it is this sports’ environment that seems to handle such difficult times in the finest of manner, offering comforting surroundings for all

those affected allowing them to grieve and celebrate life together. A football club is often described as a family and that is what we see in such trying circumstances. The Adelaide Football Club has lost its ‘father’ in some respects and it is going to take a while for all at the club – staff, players, officials and fans – to get over. But the club has the facilities needed to provide help for those in need. Everyone will get around each other, including his heartbroken wife and daughter, for comfort and understanding to make it a little easier to move on, especially while it is still hard to accept. The overwhelming support already shown is typical of how a nation can mourn in a sporting environment with fitting tributes around the nation and not only in the AFL and football community. A man of strong beliefs, Walsh’s impact on the club will never be forgotten and this tragedy will mould stronger characters within and outside the club. It was a short time but the legacy he has left will endure forever. The masterpiece at the Crows may be unfinished, but simply by having a few brush strokes left by Walsh will make this football club greater for his involvement.

THUMBS Down

Adelaide’s Rohan Dennis became only the seventh Australian to wear the maillot jaune in the Tour de France.

The continued antics of Australia’s two highest ranked tennis players are bringing the game into disrepute.

It was only a short one-day stint in the leader’s yellow jersey for the 2015 Tour Down Under winner as he sacrificed his own chances to enhance BMC team leader Tejay van Garderen’s overall prospects. Hopefully, we will see more Aussies in yellow before the tour concludes in just over two weeks.

Bernhard Tomic’s problems have become all too familiar whether its injury complaints, issues with his father or rants about support from Tennis Australia – is it time to cut him free altogether? Rising star Nick Kygrios needs to pull his head in or proceed down the same path with his petulant oncourt behaviour and now even ‘tanking’ claims.

3 SPORTSBEAT // 09 JULY 2015

Heavy hearts in west I t can be difficult analysing an upcoming AFL encounter at the best of times but Adelaide’s clash with West Coast at Domain Stadium on Saturday night now appears even harder than most.

On the recent form of both sides, the Crows don’t really have a chance of winning. Their ball use over their past few matches has been shabby to say the least and goal-kicking shocking for an AFL outfit. At times, their running fluency gives the impression that they are ready to break a game open but then one indirect kick or handpass halts their charge. Under normal circumstances, the Crows cannot present second-placed West Coast with the same opportunities. The elite skills being shown at present by the Eagles could tear Adelaide apart so limiting their room to execute them will be vital. Dual forward targets Josh Kennedy and Jack Darling loom as imposing propositions while Mark LeCras can also be damaging around goal. Brownlow medallist Matt Priddis was well constrained by former Crow and now Demon Bernie Vince last week and restricting his influence for a second week in a row will be paramount. However, West Coast also has Andrew Gaff, Luke Shuey, Chris Masten and Sharrod Wellingham who are capable of carving up an opposition. Then no-one knows what Nic Naitanui will do at any given time. However, this certainly will be no normal match on Saturday night. This clash will be won and lost on passion. No-one knows how the players will respond from the Phil Walsh tragedy. It is uncanny though how the fixture this weekend has drawn two clubs together that have been so strongly impacted by Walsh through his coaching involvements. Interim coach Scott Camporeale and his new Director of Coaching John Worsfold have been instilled the main task of containing emotions among the playing ranks. Worsfold’s knowledge of the Eagles players will be handy for Camporeale but it really comes down to how the players handle the situation. Players have been given the allowance of not playing if they do not consider themselves

ready but the bond of this group should see all wanting to play for Phil this week. Last week’s named line-up which included two possible debutants in Riley Knight and Rory Atkins along with squad additions Ricky Henderson, Jarryd Lyons and Brodie Martin is likely to be the one selected again for the trip to Perth. However, Camporeale will have to consider whether a more senior experienced head is warranted by bringing forward James Podsiadly into the side while also assessing if defender Kyle Cheney is over his back complaint of last week. Port Adelaide again opens the round on Thursday night and it too will be against a side in Collingwood that Walsh had a short but memorable time (1983 before joining Richmond the next year) in his playing days.

AFL PREVIEW ROUND15

BY DION HAYMAN

PORT ADELAIDE V COLLINGWOOD

WESTERN BULLDOGS V GOLD COAST

Collingwood has won seven of its past nine games against Port Adelaide including their last meeting last year at the MCG in round 19. The Magpies led by nine, five and five points at the three changes and eventually clung to a winning margin of six points, 11.10 (76) to 10.10 (70) despite four goals from Hamish Hartlett. Travis Cloke booted three of the Pies’ 11 goals. Port had won both matches against Collingwood in 2013 – by 35 points at Football Park in round 14 and by 24 points in the second elimination final at the MCG. This will be Collingwood’s first clash against the Power at Adelaide Oval. Before their defeat in 2013, the Magpies had won their past four games against Port in Adelaide. Overall, Collingwood leads 14 wins to 11. No player in this fixture has booted more than the six goals kicked by Sav Rocca at the MCG in Port’s first AFL match in 1997.

The Western Bulldogs have won four of their six games against Gold Coast. The sides split their matches last season. The Suns won at Carrara by 45 points, 18.11 (119) to 10.14 (74) with four goals apiece from Charlie Dixon and Tom Lynch. The Bulldogs reversed that result in Cairns in round 17 to win by 28 points, 13.16 (94) to 9.12 (66), but not before a six goal to two final quarter after leading by only two points at the last change. Dixon was again the game’s highest scorer with three. None of the six games between these sides have been close. The smallest margin of victory was the Bulldogs’ 22-point win at Carrara in 2011. Barry Hall is the only man to have scored five goals in games between these sides – that came in the Suns’ second AFL game in 2011. This match is back in Cairns where the Suns have two wins and two losses.

Richmond has won two games in a row against Carlton for the first time since completing the double against the Blues in 2006. The Tigers haven’t taken a hat-trick of wins against Carlton since 1977-78 and they haven’t won four in a row since 1971-72, a run that eventually ended in Carlton kicking the highest ever score in a grand final that season. Carlton won nine in a row against Richmond from 2008-12. The Blues’ last win against Richmond was in the 2013 elimination final when they qualified for the finals despite finishing ninth. They won that game by 20 points but were beaten in round two last year by 12 points and in round one this year by 27 points. Jack Riewoldt kicked four goals in that game, helping the Tigers recover from a 16-point deficit at quarter-time. After 74 games at the MCG, Richmond leads 39 wins to 35.

North Melbourne has won its past two and four of its past seven games against Geelong. The Kangaroos haven’t won three in a row against the Cats since 2002-03. The Roos already have one win on the board this season against the boys from Sleepy Hollow. That came in round four at Docklands when the Roos overturned a 19-point quarter-time deficit to lead by four points at half-time. They led by a goal at the last change and finished with 5.3 to 3.5 to win by 16 points, 12.11 (83) to 9.13 (67). Jarrad Waite and Mitch Clark both kicked three goals for their respective sides. The sides have met 11 times at Docklands and it’s the Roos who lead by six games to five. Since the Scott twins began coaching against each other, they have met eight times for four wins apiece. Roos’ coach Brad Scott returns from back surgery to coach against his brother Chris Scott.

ESSENDON V MELBOURNE

WEST COAST V ADELAIDE

Melbourne has proved to be a considerable thorn in Essendon’s side in recent times, remarkably winning four of its past five games against the Bombers. That includes a one-point victory when they last met in round 13 last year at the MCG. Essendon led at each change by 13, 21 and 12 points but the dead-eye Demons booted 5.0 straight in the final term to 2.5 to win, 12.6 (78) to 10.17 (77). David Zaharakis booted four goals, which was two more than anyone else on the ground. Melbourne also won stand-alone matches against the Bombers in 2010, 2011 and 2012 but was blown off the map in 2013, going down by 148 points. Essendon won that game 28.16 (184) to 5.6 (36), even outscoring the Demons 7.5 to 0.1 in the final term. Bombers duo Stewart Crameri, now with the Western Bulldogs, scored six goals and Tom Bellchambers four in the rout.

Adelaide and West Coast have split their past 10 games at five wins apiece. Their only meeting last year was in round 19 at Adelaide Oval. The Crows started the round in eighth place (9-8) ahead of the 11th-placed Eagles (7-10) and they kicked the first four goals of the game in just nine minutes. However, the Eagles steadied and led by 12 points at half-time before the Crows reloaded and appeared again headed for victory, leading by nine points in red time of the third quarter. It was the visitors who finished full of running though, booting 6.5 to 1.2 in the final term including three goals from Josh Kennedy who finished with five for the game. This game is at Subiaco where the Crows were last start winners in the final minor round game of 2013. They won by 86 points and have won two of their past three against the Eagles away. Overall the Eagles lead 22 wins to 18 and 11 wins to five at Subiaco.

The Giants led at every change and won by nine points, 12.15 (87) to 11.12 (78) with four goals from Jeremy Cameron and three from Cam McCarthy. The Giants had lost their three previous games to the Saints but had been getting closer after losing their first meeting in 2012 by 128 points at Docklands when Steven Milne scored five goals. In 2013, they were scoreless in the first quarter but cut the final margin to 72 points at Manuka Oval. Last year at Docklands, they led by eight points at half-time before losing by seven. Nick Riewoldt and Devon Smith both scored five goals that day with four from Cameron. This will be their first meeting at the Showgrounds.

Then in round 21 at Subiaco, the Dockers prevailed by 19 points, 17.8 (110) to 13.13 (91), despite trailing at the first two changes. Matthew Pavlich kicked five goals and Paul Puopolo four for the Hawks. It was the Dockers’ first win in seven against the Hawks and it was Hawthorn’s last loss for the season. This will be Hawthorn and Fremantle’s eighth meeting in Launceston. The Hawks have won all previous seven including a massive 116-point win in 2010. BRISBANE V SYDNEY Sunday 4.10pm, Gabba

Can Fremantle show that it is a real premiership threat against the Hawks on Sunday? Photo: AAP

Sydney has won its past seven games against Brisbane since the Lions’ last win by eight points in 2009 at the SCG. Those seven wins have been by an average of 51 points. Brisbane has failed to kick 10 goals in their past five against the Swans. Last year, Sydney won by 79 points at the Gabba, 18.15 (123) to 6.8 (44). It was the Swans’ second biggest win against Brisbane. Adam Goodes finished with three goals in the absence of Lance Franklin. But the Swans’ dominance over the Lions goes back more than a decade. Since 2004, the Swans have won 15, drawn one and lost only two against Brisbane. Their historic lead remains slim though with Sydney ahead 25 wins to 21 with one game drawn in 2007 in Brisbane. This game is also at the Gabba where Brisbane last beat Sydney in 2009 by 33 points but they have lost their past three home games since.

SANFL PREVIEW ROUND 13 More in-depth SANFL discussion FROM CHRIS KENDALL can be found at www.sanfl.com.au this season.

BY CHRIS KENDALL

WEST ADELAIDE V GLENELG

CENTRAL DISTRICT V ADELAIDE

While they lost to the rampant Eagles, West rallied strongly in the final term to finish 15 points in arrears of it opponent after being 55 points down late in the third term. Glenelg withstood the expected Sturt fightback after unleashing a stunning seven goal to zero first term to take its second successive points for 2015 in sound fashion. Glenelg may not be able to make the finals, but it will certainly play a role in shaping them and this must be considered a danger game for the Bloods. The Tigers have started strongly in the past fortnight and proven difficult to reel in, so Mickan will be wary of his charges not being switched on from the opening bounce. West also needs to be wary of placing most of their scoring eggs in the Shannon Green basket, as Glenelg will be awake to such focus. But the Tigers must also aim to keep their spread of goal-kicking options wide to stretch the opposition defence. There is a nagging feeling to pick the visitors here, but will just lean to West to bounce back.

While it seemed the unlikeliest of outcomes some weeks back, Central keeps giving itself the best chance of charging into the finals. A very difficult and sad week at the Adelaide Football Club will face its first test since Phil Walsh’s death. It is hard to say how it will respond. Central is still two wins behind South Adelaide and will need a lot of luck to clinch a September berth, but coach Roy Laird will be hammering home that the players must retain as much of their own destiny. Their ability to break the lines with precision disposal has kept improving all season and has taken the opposition unaware at times. This will be the challenge for Adelaide mentor Heath Younie. Not only will he need to keep his charges focused after the toughest week in their short history, he will have to work the changes quickly at times to counter the Bulldogs’ quick rotations. This is a very difficult one to select due to so many intangible factors. A sound case can be made for either team but there is plenty on the line here for Central.

NORWOOD V PORT MAGPIES

STURT V EAGLES

After two losses that many would have penciled in as wins, some questions marks are being raised over Norwood and whether it can defend its triple premiership crown. The Redlegs seemed flat for long periods against a more desperate Glenelg and Central. The Magpies should be mentally and physically freshened up after their match was postponed last week and ready to make a genuine charge for a top-three spot. The extra week’s break for Port may prove crucial against an opponent that has been labouring somewhat for a few weeks, throwing a real challenge to coach Ben Warren to unlock the key to freshen them before a tough run home for the finals. Particularly around the middle, there will be some pivotal battles that could set the tone, with Norwood ruckman Sam Baulderstone set for a testing battle against Port’s Jared Redden. The Magpies have been able to mix up their scoring options many times, although it is worth noting they floundered for consistent options a fortnight back against Adelaide. Despite Port not winning at this ground since 2007, will tip them here.

After such promise early in the season, Sturt’s 2015 has hit the staggers in a fashion few saw coming. No such issues for the Eagles. They have also won the past five encounters against the Double Blues at this ground and on form, there is little to suggest that this will change on Saturday. The Eagles’ game style has proven very difficult for the opposition to halt and coach Michael Godden has certainly reinvigorated many of his charges successfully to have them a genuine challenger for the flag. Sturt mentor Seamus Maloney swung the axe last week at selection, including dumping returning ex-Geelong player Brad Hartman. But the malaise at Unley looks a little deeper than simply shuffling the deck chairs. Unless it can rediscover the belief, desperation and willingness to get the hands dirty that carried them to the finals last season, 2015 looms as a wasted year, which hands the Eagles the advantage here.

South would be well aware that Central is making a charge for a finals berth and while they sit two games clear of the Bulldogs, coach Brad Gotch would be pushing his group hard to maintain the pressure. North’s season was given a slight reprieve last week with the postponement of their match against Port . The clubs have split the past eight encounters at this ground with four wins apiece, but they have appeared more evenly matched in past seasons. South’s hard running work around the flanks was at its best two weeks ag, impressively disposing of Sturt and quick, decisive ball movement has not been a hallmark of the Roosters this season. North has appeared lost at times when working the ball around, which is something that Handby must turn around. If the Roosters are to progress over this last part of the season, they must take their chances, try new things and look toward their second string players to seize their audition for the future. Despite this, however, the impetus is with the Panthers.

England must up the ante to win Ashes

And if that means more sledging then so be it, says the bad boy of English cricket.

“Sadly I think Australia will win 2-1. I want England to win but I just can’t see it happening. I hope I am wrong.

“Australians are intimidating people when they get on top of you. So England guys have to fight them on their own terms. Do not take a backward step,” Pietersen wrote in his column in the Daily Telegraph. “The Ashes is sporting war and sledging is good for the game. I want more of it and I want there to be fire in the series. “I do not want to see people laughing and joking with each other. It is Ashes cricket. You do not test people mentally by smiling at the opposition on the field. Do not cross the line or be personal. But stand up and take them on.” The issue of sledging has never been far from the surface in the build-up, with James Anderson insisting on Monday he would refrain

Pietersen, speaking before the start of the first Test in Cardiff on Wednesday, predicts the tourists will win the series because of their superior bowling attack.

“The difference between the two teams this series is we do not have that strike bowler who can lead the attack and take wickets while James Anderson is resting between spells. “Two years ago we had Graeme Swann but I’m concerned as to who will be our match-winner if Anderson does not turn up. It is essential Stuart Broad and Mark Wood are firing and taking wickets. “England’s route to victory then lies with Alastair Cook and Joe Root scoring lots of runs, and the bowling attack working in partnerships to make up for that lack of a strike bowler.” BY AAP

him drop to sixth leaving Reid Park. “It is a circuit that will prove whether we are going to be in or out of this Championship,” Lowndes said. “History shows we have struggled there. If you are going to be a championship contender you have to turn all those things around. “I really enjoy Townsville, the style of track and everything else. “We will go up there looking for that 101st win.” Lowndes lauds new engineer Grant McPherson for his accomplishments so far this season to claim three poles, three race wins and four other podiums and believes McPherson’s strong record at the hybrid circuit, having engineered Will Davison to victory there in 2013, will be crucial in changing his fortunes at the track.

McIlroy in doubt for Open

R

ory McIlroy could miss the defence of his British Open crown after announcing on his Twitter account Monday that he had ruptured a ligament in his left ankle. “Total rupture of left ATFL (ankle ligament) and associated joint capsule damage in a soccer kickabout with friends on Saturday,” the Northern Irishman said. “Continuing to assess extent of injury and treatment plan day by day. Rehab already started..... Working hard to get back as soon as I can.” He also posted a photograph on Instagram showing himself on crutches and wearing a protective boot. A spokesman for McIlroy later said that, despite the injury, he has not ruled himself out of defending his Open Championship title at St Andrews from 16 July. The 26 year-old McIlroy had also been due to play in the Scottish Open at Gullane starting on Thursday to prepare for St Andrews, but the injury looks like ruling him out of that. McIlroy won his first British Open crown at Hoylake last July and then went on to win the PGA Championship, taking his haul of major titles to four. He was on target for a clean sweep of all four major titles at the Masters in April but could only place fourth behind Jordan Spieth. The 21 year-old American then won again at the US Open last month and his budding rivalry with McIlroy was set to become the focal point of the Open. McIlroy gave no details about how long he expected to be sidelined, but injuries such as the one he has outlined can take weeks or, in the worst cases, months to fully recover from and even require surgery.

Teammate Jamie Whincup, is the most successful driver in the Townsville 400.

Should he be sidelined for more than a month, he would also be unlikely to be able to defend his PGA Championship which gets under way at Whistling Straits, Wisconsin, on 13 August.

Finals remain on Blacks radar Success for SA delaide University hasn’t given up hope of making this year’s finals series just yet.

The Blacks’ last round victory over Rostrevor OC showed they were still capable of challenging, snaring an essential 18-point triumph two weeks ago that will boost confidence as well. However, their only concern is whether they are starting from too far back, three wins in arrears of fifth spot. Jack Grieger and Seb Paynter though should be able to add another victory to the needed tally when Adelaide University hosts Portland on Saturday. Port District made its own step forward, gaining close rein of the top five with a superb 27-point victory over Payneham Norwood Union before last weekend’s break. It was a win that has made things harder for the Blacks but has given the Magpies

renewed hope of snatching a finals’ berth. Josh Thurgood is having an impact at Port District and his experience could be telling in the lead-up to the finals while Steven Clay continues to energise the side. The Magpies’ true intentions will need to be shown to threaten Goodwood Saints this week, especially after a last-round loss for the Saints which rarely lose two in a row.

Undefeated through the shortened (2x20min halves) preliminary rounds, SA proved too good for Western Australia in the grand final, winning by 14 points, 7.13 (55) to 5.11 (41). “It couldn’t have gone any better,” SA coach Sean Jackson said.

Tea Tree Gully sits on top of the tree following that impressive performance against Goodwood last round, winning by 33 points.

“The preparation was fantastic and it was smooth sailing all the way.

Jonathan Birkin and Connor Elphick will be out to settle themselves there when Rostrevor OC visits on Saturday.

With the final played at Blundstone Arena, SA believed it had a physical advantage but needed to restrict WA’s outside run in open spaces, which according to Jackson the side achieved accordingly.

Salisbury North only just rose into the top five with a valuable 70-point rout over Portland, but is still the most vulnerable to fall back out. The Hawks can improve that status by beating Henley this week in what looms as a gruelling battle as the Sharks also try to seal a top-three spot. Anthony Morgante and Matthew Sharpe are expected to be called upon again to influence proceedings. The SANFL experience of Tim Broadbent and Brett Backwell at Henley will be hard to get passed though. The Sharks will be out to seal the double chance as well. The Falcons will be hoping to bounce back against Sacred Heart OC.

“They were all tight games but we weren’t behind in any game.”

“We just had to keep it a low scoring affair and not let the ball get out too easily because our (superior) inside work was certainly our strength,” he said. “We were always in control without ever putting them away. “We burnt the ball a bit in the front of goal, missing some easy goals in the first quarter. “We were 1.6 at quarter-time which was a bit of a concern so it was close but then we broke it out to about three goals at half-time. Midfielder Alex McKay was awarded best on ground in the final for his pivotal ball work in the middle, but he was also the most dominant player across the whole carnival.

Jackson was named coach of the All Australian team which included nine SA players – McKay (Tea Tree Gully), Delmenico (Sacred Heart OC), Hales (Port District), Lockwood (St Peters OC), Josh Allen (Athelstone), Scott Spriggs (Scotch OC), Ben Smeldt (Adelaide University), Matthew Stent (Golden Grove) and Tim Baccanello (Rostrevor OS).

Thrills still to come

A

real impasse is building up among the top seven teams in Division 2 at the moment, making every week crucial in the scheme of the season.

It simply leads to thrilling competition at this level for the second half of the year, now that all breaks in the season are behind us. Some critical match-ups this week pits St Peters OC and Gaza together, top side Unley Mercedes Jets out to maintain its position against Broadview and an important all-college affair between Scotch OC and Prince Alfred OC. Each looks to be a tantalising contest with plenty hanging on the outcomes. SPOC has been one of the form sides in recent weeks rising up the ladder to a more

respectable and expected position while the Eagles had a lapse last round to fall back from the front runners.

Scotch OC will be looking for a similar effort from the team that gave Gaza a shock two weeks ago and win by 13 points.

If Ben Illman and Liam Cocks can produce a victory for St Peters OC on Saturday then they will increase the pressure on Gaza’s quest to maintain in the top three.

In other games, second-placed Modbury should have no trouble accounting for the still winless Gepps Cross and SMOSH West Lakes can consolidate its position in Division 2 for next year with a win against Walkerville at the Cattery.

The Jets continue to fly above expectations atop the ladder, but they wouldn’t want to take the Tigers lightly. Nathan Grocke, Judd Robson and co have the ability to cause an upset but will need to be at their best to achieve it.

Phantoms set to pounce

P

HOS Camden will take over top place on the ladder if it beats Flinders Park at Camden Oval on Saturday. The Phantoms will jump over Athelstone, which has a bye, on percentage.

The Phantoms again stood tall last week beating Golden Grove by 28 points at Harpers Field. Nick Ramsey, Tom Clarke and Ryan Reavley were among the stars for the Phantoms as was Andrew Harris with six goals. Flinders Park is dropping off the pace in sixth place, last week falling to Old Ignatians by 71 points. Justin Keatley, Brett Hains and Daniel Blythe were solid for the Reds. PHOS won’t let this slip, home by 70-88 points. Third meets fifth when Pembroke Old Scholars and Golden Grove lock horns at Haslam Oval. The Kings had a bye last week, while before that they crushed Seaton

Ramblers by 92 points, Henry Nicholson leading the way. Golden Grove found the Phantoms too strong last week at home to fall by 28 points but showed enough to suggest it could be around the mark come finals. Joshua Ingram, Judd Morris and Brock Castree led last week’s effort. The Kings can keep a hold on third place by 14-28 points. Old Ignatians and Plympton look set to produce an absorbing battle at Hunter Park in their fourth v seventh contest. Old Iggies were too good for Flinders Park last week with Shelley Fulton, Nichols Penta (three goals) and Cameron Ortlepp playing fine games. Plympton also had a good win, beating improving Mitcham by 33 points at home. Kieren Nelson, Daniel Bartlett and Matt Koopman led the charge with Giorgio Kastrappi who kicked four goals. Old Iggies by 12-28 points.

Eighth versus ninth will hold plenty of interest when Mitcham hosts Seaton Ramblers. Both sides have had good moments lately with Mitcham winning two of its past three games. Last week Steven Wyld (three goals) led the way for the Hawks in their loss to Plympton. Seaton pushed top side Athelstone all day at home before losing by 16 points with Heath Fitzpatrick one of several top players for the Rams. Mitcham looks too good at home by 14-26 points. Dragons, Hounds desperate for finals

W

estminster Old Scholars and Hectorville face a crucial game in their bid to keep finals’ dreams alive this week at Glandore Oval. While a loss by the Dragons is not season defining a Hectorville defeat would almost close the door on making the major round. Westminster Old Scholars charged home last week to fall to Eastern Park by 13 points after trailing by 50 points in the last quarter. Matthew Newman (three goals) again played a fine game for WOS. Hectorville fell to Hope Valley by nine points at home after leading by 21 points at half time. Daniel Davilla was the Hounds’ best. Tough to find a case for the Hounds this week. WOS 16-27 points. Hope Valley faces a tough contract against Kilburn at Hope Valley this week.

The Demons are seventh and needing win to keep pace with the top five. Devin Payne, Daniel Wood and Steven Burns (five goals) led the way for the Demons in last week’s win. Kilburn has been excellent all season and sits second on the ladder with 10 wins. The Chics beat Pooraka by 13 points last week with Billy Parks, Adam Clutton and Matthew Whelan among the key players. Mark McCallum kicked six goals. The Chics look too settled here by 28-40 points. Pooraka and North Haven lock horns at Lindblom Park. Pooraka was solid in its 13-point loss to Kilburn with Michael Baker, Drew Hosking and Stephen Geer leading the way. Daniel Wyles kicked five goals. North Haven has hit a mini hurdle, losing its past two games but still holds top place. Chris

Lipson, Stefan Cochrane and Mark Rowe were best for the Magpies in their loss to Salisbury. North Haven can hit back here by 20-26 points. Kenilworth and Eastern Park look evenly matched at St Marys Park although the Demons are fourth and the Kookaburras eighth. Salisbury, third, looks far too strong for bottom side Glenunga at Salisbury. BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

Dolphins in top-three mix

C

BC Old Collegians has put itself right in the mix for the double chance in Division 5.

An inspired display stunned top side before the weekend Blackfriars OS which has lifted the Dolphins within reach of a possible top-three outcome, just two wins behind the Hounds who fell to third after the bewildering 53-point loss. CBCOC meets the bottom side but cannot let their attitude lapse. It will be up to players such as Cail Harris and Stephen Dubrich to maintain the rage and even look at boosting their side’s low percentage against Woodville South on Saturday. The Hounds must be mindful that any side at this level can surprise. They face a side this

week in Elizabeth still looking for consistency to fulfil its finals prospects. The Eagles let one slip last week too which could have placed them in similar position as CBCOC.

The Lions were at their menacing best last week, with Emmett Wood and Chad Francis mauling Woodville South by 150 points. They meet Rosewater, clinging to fifth spot, on Saturday for a much tougher encounter.

However, their fightback to lead late in their contest against Greenacres was all in vain as the Dragons pinched the victory with less than a minute to spare.

Para Hills also benefited from Blackfriars OS’s loss last week jumping into second on the ladder following its tough 23-point win over Rosewater as well.

Greenacres can tighten the finals race even further with victory over Adelaide Lutheran this week.

Peter Bradtke and Brayden Bennett of the Big Reds can strength the position with a win over Pulteney this week.

Although, it wouldn’t want to be giving too many sides a three-goal lead before getting started too often.

BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Its ability to turn it around and be four goals up by half-time shows it has potential but it needs to be realised by the likes of Michael Wheaton and Steven Taylor at the Dragons. Top spot is back in the hands of Colonel Light Gardens and it won’t want to forgo it again.

Lions, Bulldogs keen to rule

place in the top five is the likely reward after this week’s round for the winner of the Fitzroy/Ingle Farm game at Fitzroy. The Lions are sixth with four wins and will need to tighten their defence after kicking 16.2 but conceding 26.23 against West Croydon last week. David Campbell was best for the Lions. Ingle Farm holds fifth and recorded a solid 23-point win against Central United with Sam Naylor among the best. One more chance for the Lions to get home by 12-22 points. Top of the ladder is the prize for the winner of Lockleys/Smithfield when the in-form sides clash at Lockleys Oval. This game looks a beauty with both sides coming in with excellent form, Lockleys winning by 82 points last week against Brahma Lodge and James Drage a star for the Demons. Smithfield is unbeaten and had little worry beating Mawson Lakes by 61 points as Shane Richards led the charge. Lockleys can take top place on percentage in a beauty 10-20 points. Mawson Lakes will be home but it will need more than that against third side Trinity Old

Scholars this week. Mawson Lakes was solid against Smithfield last week in its 61-point loss with Chae Mellow standing tall. Trinity Old Scholars had the bye last week. Hard to go against Trinity in this one by 34-44 points. Central United and Brahma Lodge is another line ball game at Mofflin Reserve. In eighth and seventh places respectively on the ladder. Central fell to Ingle Farm by 23 points last week with James Bain playing strongly. Brahma Lodge felt the force of Lockleys last week to crash by 82 points. Daniel Hickey was a fine player for the Tigers. Very tough to pick a winner here. Maybe the home side by 12-24 points. West Croydon has the bye. BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

Owls season fading

A

ngle Vale’s finals aspirations are hanging on a knife edge. Slowly losing touch with the top four, the Owls have a few crucial matches coming up to keep themselves in the hunt. The only way they can give themselves a chance of playing finals is to begin beating sides above them on the ladder. This has been a struggle for them lately, even unable to contain their next finals challenger in fourth-placed Mitchell Park last week, losing by 74 points. The Lions controlled the contest from the outset, which would have been disappointing for Angle Vale as it prides itself on being hard to beat at home. The Owls face second-placed Adelaide University on Saturday with their season fading away. After a solid performance in defeating Salisbury West by 22 points, Patrick Dolan and Sam Parker of the Blacks are sure to make things difficult for the visitors this week. The Tigers will be heading to St Pauls

College on Saturday with their finals chances basically diminished. St Pauls OS will still be eying a top-two finish and must win games like this to do so. Flinders University offered little resistance to the Saints last week as Joe Adamo and Wayne Nassereddine dictated terms in the convincing 104-point victory. Salisbury West is capable of giving the Saints a fright on its day, but its current form suggests it will get overrun in the end. It’s top versus bottom in the other Division 7 encounter this week and it’s a freshened top side after the bye as well so this could get ugly at Houghton Oval. It’s a long trip for the Crabs but could be an even longer trip home. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Beau in “fantastic shape”

New jockey James Doyle then declared the Diamond Jubilee runner-up at Royal Ascot was in “fantastic shape” after being given what Waller described as a “maintenance” run on the July Cup course. “It’s great for Brazen Beau to get a feel of the place as it’s a bit more undulating than Ascot, here you go down as well as up,” Waller said. “I was happy with the workout. It was pretty standard work for him. “He worked 400 metres I suppose which was maintenance work and it’s just a question of keeping a lid on him until Saturday. “We don’t need to improve him. We have just got to keep him happy and keep the speed in him. James seemed happy with him.” Waller has anointed the Charles Hill-trained Muhaarar as the biggest danger to Brazen Beau

breaking through on English soil. “Obviously I saw Muhaarar at Ascot and he looks pretty handy” he said. “He’s the equivalent of what Brazen Beau was in Australia, a three-year-old coming through the ranks who will get the weight allowance.” Waller has an in-form jockey on board, with Doyle having won seven of his 15 rides so far this month, so confidence is high for another big run from his star I Am Invincible colt, who will race in the Godolphin blue colours for the first time at Newmarket. “I did a little bit more with Brazen Beau than I did last week and he’s in fantastic shape,” Doyle said. “Obviously, you’ve got to respect Muhaarar who turned in a freakish performance at Ascot but my fellow goes there on top of his game.” Brazen Beau and Muhaarar are joint-favourites for the famous Newmarket sprint over 1200 metres. The Aussie champion will then come home to stand his first season at stud at Darley Stud in the Hunter Valley in the spring.

IT’s a joke “DO YOU BELIEVE IN LIFE AFTER DEATH?” THE BOSS ASKED ONE OF HIS EMPLOYEES “YES, SIR,” HE REPLIED.
