ITINERARY FOR UTAH’S NATIONAL PARKS

The United States’ first national parks are older than 100 years, but the Park Service itself began in August 1916. And there’s no better place than the Mountain West, especially Utah, for national park access. Most Utahns live within a 12-hour drive of 24 national parks—that doesn’t include monuments—making it tough to decide which to visit first.

Luckily, Utah is also home to five national park gems, and this weeklong road trip itinerary is an easy way to them this summer while commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the National Parks.

The under 1,000-mile route (without side trips) includes recommended activities for adventurers and families. Start/end point for both trips is the Utah State Capitol building.

NOT-TO-MISS SITES AND HIKES Arches National Park For Adventurers Devils Garden Trail with Primitive Loop (7+ miles, depending on side trips) After spending a half-day driving, stretch your legs on this hike at the end of the main road in Arches. The longest maintained trail 10

For Families Sand Dune, Skyline & Broken Arches (about a 3-mile RT) Travelling with young children who aren’t quite ready for a 7-miler? Try this easy trail. Park at the lower end of the Devils Garden campground and follow the Broken Arch Loop, making side trips to Sand Dune and Skyline arches. For a shorter hike, skip Skyline and follow the road south from where the loop connects with it back to the campground trailhead.

Canyonlands National Park For Adventurers The Squaw Flat Campground Trailheads in the Needles District The gateway to some of the most adventurous day hikes in the park, trails here can be combined to almost any length. The Big Springs-Elephant Canyon Loop (about 11 miles) has great vistas of The Needles and other formations. A couple of ladder climbs link the two trails, which are mostly on slickrock.

For Families Island in the Sky Canyonlands’ most family-friendly district. Combine a few short hikes in this area: Crater View Trail (1 mile) offers a view of Upheaval Dome, a geological enigma; nearby Whale Rock (.5 mile) is a hunk of sandstone Captain Ahab would have appreciated; Aztec Butte (.6 mile) passes a granary built by Ancestral Puebloans; and Mesa Arch (.5-mile loop) leads to one of the park’s most iconic features.

Temples of the Sun and Moon, Cathedral Valley, Capitol Reef National Park

Capitol Reef National Park For Adventurers Cathedral District If you have a high-clearance vehicle (preferably 4x4), visit this remote backcountry area where several unmaintained hikes lead to sites like the Temples of the Sun and Moon, a Gypsum sinkhole, and other rarely visited features. Take a map, and hope for good weather.

Highway 24, Capitol Reef National Park

Bryce Canyon National Park

For Families Surprise and Headquarters Canyons On your way out of Capitol Reef, visit two kid-friendly slot canyons by heading east to NotomBullfrog Road and follow it south along the backside of the Waterpocket Fold. Pass the Burr Trail junction and look for the trailheads for Surprise Canyon (2-mile RT) and Headquarters Canyon (3.2-mile RT). When you’re finished, take the Burr Trail to Boulder and Highway 12. Bryce Canyon is only 77 miles away.

For Families Tropic Trail (3.6-mile RT) Bryce hoodoos are best seen from below. But the steep hikes from the rim can be tough for young children. Instead, consider the Tropic Trail, a 1.8-mile (one-way), gentle climb from the end of Bryce Way in Tropic. It leads right to the 3-mile Peekaboo Loop and continues to the Navajo Loop in the most popular section of the park. After hiking back to the car, drive 10 miles up Highway 12 to explore the rest of Bryce Canyon.

Zion National Park

For Adventurers The Fairyland Loop (8 miles) A less-visited but gorgeously “enchanting” (and strenuous) hike. Best access is at Fairyland Point, which lies at the end of a road north of the Visitor Center. Tower Bridge, the Chinese Wall, and the Sinking Ship are only a few of the seldomviewed sites you’ll take in.

For Adventurers Hidden Canyon and Observation Point Take the shuttle to the Weeping Rock stop and combine Hidden Canyon with Observation Point (about 10 miles total) for a uniquely Zion experience. Hidden Canyon is a short, steep climb into a cool hanging garden of Eden. Hang onto the chains for the exposed last bit of the hike. Head back down to the main trail and continue up to Observation Point, which overlooks Angel’s Landing and provides an incredible vista of Zion Canyon.

For Families Kolob Canyons After exploring Zion, visit this area of the park as you head north. The Lee Pass Trailhead is a 5-miler up the middle fork of Taylor Creek with several stream crossings, pioneer cabins, and great scenery that keeps it interesting. If you’re short on time, drive to the end of the road and take a one-mile stroll on the Timber Creek Overlook Trail, one of the best “high value, low effort” hikes around that’s great for younger children.

Wine Country Exploration by Kayak, Bike, and On Foot

By Jenny Willden Vineyards, rolling hills, and America’s best wines. That’s all I knew about Napa before traveling to California’s famed wine making country this spring, but once there I found there’s much more to adventuring here than tasting unique wine varietals.

OUTDOOR EXPERIENCES ON THE NAPA RIVER

Active travelers can paddle down the tidal Napa River while learning the secrets and stories of the city’s past on a guided kayaking tour led by Napa native and Enjoy Napa Valley (enjoy-napa-valley.com) owner, Justin Perkins. During the tour, watch for river otters, sea turtles, great blue herons, and eagles that call the Napa River home.

For an all-day adventure, add a guided bike ride to a winery to your kayaking tour. During our ride, we pedaled from downtown Napa along the scenic, shaded Napa River Trail past vibrant vineyards to Del Dotto Vineyards. Here we toured the historic caves of this family-owned winery, tasting wines straight from the barrel before biking back downtown.

If you prefer being in the water to on it, try a class on the art of fly fishing at Uncorked at Oxbow tasting salon. You’ll learn the basics— fly selection, knot tying, and safety—before pulling on waders and practicing your casting in the Napa River. After, you’ll return to the tasting room to sample Uncorked’s world-class wines.

Once exhausted from outdoor exploration, focus your evenings on the burgeoning dining and drinking scene contained within Napa’s vibrant, walkable downtown.

A TOWN REVITALIZED

famous for fluffy English muffins and decadent baked goods. Its popularity is evidenced by the long line outside the shop almost every morning.

Next door, Napa’s 40,000 square-foot epicurean paradise, Oxbow Public Market, awaits. Named for the U-shaped loop the Napa River makes just outside the Market, this artisan food haven houses 22 tenants purveying all types of eats and drinks. Try award-winning Kara’s Cupcakes in flavors like Fleur de Sel and Banana Caramel, Ritual’s nitro cold brewed coffee, wood-fired pizzas, fresh oysters, and spirits at Napa’s first legal distillery since Prohibition.

My favorite stop was taking the popular cheese and wine physics class at the Market’s Oxbow Cheese & Wine Merchant. Here master sommelier, Peter Granoff, partnered four distinct cheeses with the same red and white wines to help us discover the perfect pairings for our palettes. I found I (still) love a glass of red wine and aged chedder.

Downtown Napa Riverfront

to revitalization projects put into motion by longtime mayor, Jill Techel, which have transformed the riverfront and downtown into a vacation-worthy destination in its own right. Today, it’s the place to sample California’s best wines at over 20 tasting rooms—without ever needing (or using) a car.

One affordable way to try wine downtown is purchasing a Taste Card for $30 that gets you10 cent samplings at eight tasting rooms. Favorites on the card are the riverside Napa General Store for patio wine flights served alongside locally produced goods, and Bounty Hunter Bar & Smokin’ BBQ, which is famous for beer can chicken and their selection of 40 wines and 40 whiskeys sold by the glass.

Liquor licenses are hard to come by in Napa, so not every bar serves cocktails, but I hardly noticed thanks to late-night neighborhood establishments like Cadet Wine & Beer Bar. Its diverse list highlights California producers, but also ventures beyond the state’s borders. Locals love the guest bartender nights and massive collection of vinyl records.

Uniquely, this entire trip was done without a car, so skip drawing straws on who DDs and instead explore Napa’s downtown flavors by bike, boat, or simply walking.

Dowtown Napa boasts 65 eclectic restaurants and counting—all within walking distance of one another—and progressive-style dining is the best way to sample it all. We began at Torc for a globally inspired Happy Hour featuring $5 bites of Deviled Eggs, Sweet Potato Pakoras, and cheesy quesadillas paired with $6 by the glass wine. For entrees, we walked a few blocks to Angele, a romantic riverfront bistro with incredible French fare. (Opt for the risotto; you won’t be disappointed.)

Splurge on dessert next door at Frati Gelato Café where two brothers make fresh flavors on-site each day. Alternatively, start at Atlas Social and experience their seasonal small plates menu and surprising Daily Bread combinations.

In the morning, don’t miss juice samples in the lobby or brunch at Andaz Farmer’s Table, where surprising takes on everyday favorites like sweet potato and black bean hash, pumpkin pancakes, and hydrating veggie juices rejuvenate your palate after a day of wine sampling. Despite these perks beyond my hotel room, the giant soaking bathtub, plush bed, free WiFi, and fridge stocked with non-alcoholic drinks made venturing out tougher than usual.

Historic Napa River Inn is another excellent choice for riverside accommodations in a more classically styled setting.

Mountain Biking in Santa Fe

Santa Fe is the kind of place you might imagine when you think of the American Southwest. Coyote fences surround the distinctive Pueblo Revival-style buildings adorned with hanging red chile garlands. It’s the oldest state capital city in the United States and the oldest city in New Mexico. Santa Fe was founded by Spanish colonists in 1610—the same year Galileo discovered the moons of Jupiter and Louis XIII of France was crowned—but we didn’t go to Santa Fe to explore its rich cultural history. We didn’t go to there to explore its wide array of museums and art markets. We didn’t go to taste the many splendored flavors at its authentic restaurants. We went to ride.

LA TIERRA MOUNTAIN BIKING TRAILS

Elevation 7,000–7,600 ft.

One of the strongest selling points of visiting the trails of Santa Fe is that you can ride to two of the major trail systems, Dale Ball and La Tierra, from the downtown Santa Fe bike shops in roughly 20 minutes.

But there’s no shortage of other trails to choose from, with more than 16

a dozen options within the city limits that are suitable for beginners, experts, and everyone in between.

More than 25 miles of interconnected trails make up the La Tierra trail system in the northwest region of Santa Fe. Riders wind past piñon pines and cedar, through a landscape that seems to mirror the picturesque vision of the artists who have called this place home.

These trails are considered mostly intermediate, with some optional advanced and expert-only sections. The singletrack trails are fast, flowy, and fun! Though the trails were created in 2008, most haven’t been officially named, so it can be somewhat confusing if you don’t have a trail map with you. We lapped the new Hustle and Flow Trail, also known as the Flow Trail.

There isn’t any signage for it yet, but there is a technical trail sign warning riders that an advanced skill level is required. Access it by veering left just after the number seven intersection and you’ll ride some of the most woot-inducing flow-riding on the planet—it will have you

We couldn’t believe how vacant the trails were. Where were all the people? We encountered less than a handful of other riders and it was a gorgeous day—that is, until the black clouds rolled in and the lightning ushered us back to town. Maybe it was the brewing storm that had kept everyone else away.

It rained and rained and finally turned to snow. Apparently the weather in Santa Fe is as temperamental as the weather is in Salt Lake City in the spring. Fortunately, Santa Fe is a town full of interesting urban enchantments.

CHILLY CHILE ACTIVITIES

It continued to rain or snow for the rest of our trip so we had the opportunity to see what else the city had to offer. We stayed at a lovely hotel called the Old Santa Fe Inn, set right in the middle of town and within walking distance of everything.

We walked toward Santa Fe’s Old Town Square and could smell the roasting chiles wafting through the air well before we got there. Our bike trip quickly turned into a tour of Santa Fe’s culinary scene.

It seems every spot in which we ate featured an award-winning chef.

We had breakfast at the Four Seasons Terra so we could try their highly rated blue corn pancakes, chilaquiles, and huevos rancheros.

We ate lunch at the Palacio Cafe, which serves soups, salads, and sandwiches, but is far beyond ordinary. This is the kind of place you are lucky to get a table at because it’s always busy and you can’t go wrong with ordering. Everything tasted so fresh that it was as if the chef plucked the arugula and tomatoes from his garden as soon as I ordered my meal.

hootin’ and hollerin’ as you hit the berms and jumps along the way. This trail is also a popular night riding and winter fat biking trail because it’s easy to lap and has a low grunt-to-grin ratio. The area also has a dirt jumps and freeride jump park where riders can improve their bike skills.

To pair the cheese, we thought we should try out some of the local grapes so we visited the Vino del Corazon Wine Room and tasted some regional selections including a uniquely satisfying spicy Red Chili Cabernet Sauvignon.

SOPAPILLAS, ENCHILADAS, AND CERVEZAS For dinners, we relied on recommendations from the locals, and they definitely steered us in the right direction. Thomasitas serves classic Northern New Mexico fare in a modern, rustic atmosphere—but what everyone raves about are the sopapillas. They’re served with honey and butter after every entree, and make a very good dessert. I would go just for the sopapillas, but everything we ate was flavorful, especially the red and green chile sauces. Casa Chimayo is a casual family-owned restaurant that exclusively serves the traditional authentic cuisine of Northern New Mexico. You can find the owner, Roberto, visiting with his customers and pushing the enchiladas and organic goat milk flan dessert on any given night.

After having red and/or green chiles in almost every meal, we decided to make a slight departure from the classic local fare to try Raaga for some modern Indian cuisine. Everything was so savory that even though I was full I wanted to continue eating. Here too, the owner and chef, Paddy Rawal, stopped by our table and the tables of other guests to make sure everyone was happy with their meal. After dinner, we enjoyed a few cervezas at The Dragon Room, recently named as the top bar in Santa Fe. This watering hole is popular with locals and tourists alike. It has a charming adobe fireplace, and, yes, dragon decor. Truly, every place at which we ate or had a drink in Santa Fe was one for the books.

Perhaps there isn’t a better place to be banished from the bike trails. In addition to the ample foodie delights, art galleries and museums, and boutique shops, there are also Opera performances and Flamenco dancing shows, as well as a whole lot of other entertainment options that we might not have discovered had the weather cooperated. No matter what you do in Santa Fe, you can count on a well-fed belly and soul.

SIPPING CHOCOLATES AND SPICY SAUVIGNON

We stopped by C.G. Higgins on a recommendation from the locals to try the sipping chocolate elixirs. Much tastier than hot chocolate, they are infused in a variety of extracts such as mint or orange and are a perfect post-ride or rainy day treat.

We walked down Marcy Street, a few blocks from C.G. Higgins, and wandered into Cheesemongers to sample their artisanal cheeses.

The shopkeeper helping us reminded me of Geppetto, with his wispy gray hair, rosy cheeks, and jovial spirit. His passion for cheese shined with each slice he offered. It seems everyone who lives in Santa Fe is 18

Uniquely Utah Campgrounds 6 Places to Pitch a Tent This Summer

Whether it’s a weekend getaway or an extended backpacking trip, camping is the perfect way to enjoy Utah’s summer months. But with hundreds of public and private campgrounds located throughout the state, finding the right destination can be a daunting challenge.

Choose the wrong site, and you could end up surrounded by growling generators or swarms of mosquitoes.

We’ve picked six of Utah’s best campgrounds for all sorts of campers: dog lovers, family types, hardcore hikers, and more. No matter what kind of outdoor adventure you have in mind, you’re sure to find a campground that’s perfect for it. CAMPING WITH YOUR CANINE

Kayenta Campground, Dead Horse Point State Park Have a dog who loves the outdoors as much as you do? Fido is welcome at this fully-equipped campground. GETTING AWAY FROM IT ALL

Lava Point Campground, Zion National Park While Zion’s bigger, fully-developed South Campground and Watchman Campground are scorching hot and jam-packed during the summer months, remote Lava Point offers a quieter, more traditional camping experience. Located at the highest point in the park, its six primitive sites are first-come, first-served. For a challenging but memorable day hike, catch the park shuttle to the campground, then hike 16 miles down the West Rim trail to the main canyon. (You can also stretch this hike into a more leisurely two-day adventure.)

GROUP GET-TOGETHER

Devils Garden Campground, Arches National Park For an outdoor getaway with up to 55 of your closest friends, head to the Canyon Wren or Juniper Basin group camping sites in Devils

Garden. At just $3 per person per night ($33 minimum), they’re a great option for a family or class reunion. No RVs or trailers are allowed in these sites. Nearby hiking options range from a leisurely 15-minute stroll to an intense 7.2-mile scramble around the full Devils Garden Loop.

WET AND WILD Hailstone Recreation Area, Jordanelle State Park Need to escape the heat? Boaters, anglers, and swimmers will appreciate the convenience of Hailstone’s waterfront campsites located along the Jordanelle Reservoir. Eight of the 221 sites include boat slips; if you’re not a boat owner, rentals are available nearby. Kayaks and paddleboards offer 100% people-powered options for staying cool on the water.

SUPER SINGLETRACK Blackhawk Campground, Payson Canyon Out of the tent and into the saddle! This large campground offers plenty of sites for groups of every size, but the real draw is its proximity to world-class singletrack trails. Tackle the 18-mile, tree-lined Blackhawk Loop or the lung-searing 12-mile Sheepherder Loop. Prefer skinny-tire adventures? The 69-mile Nebo Loop offers a stunning but challenging road ride.

WHAT’S SUP? 5 Utah Places to Try Stand Up Paddleboarding

Combine the fun of being on the water in the sunshine with the health benefits of exercise and you get one of the fastest growing watersport out there: Stand Up Paddleboarding, or SUP as it’s commonly known.

Stand up paddleboarding is great for improving balance and strength and has something to offer every personality. Choose your own adventure: take a slow, relaxing paddle on a glassy lake or get your adrenaline pumping by riding whitewater down a river.

Fitness fanatics will love the balance challenge of SUP yoga or fitness classes. Or you can use a stand up paddleboard for endurance distance racing, paddling with your dog, and even fly-fishing.

RULES FOR NEWBIES • First things first. If just learning to SUP, start with a lesson from a reputable guide or go with an experienced friend. Learning the basics of paddling isn’t hard, but if your first time on water involves being blown across the lake on a board that’s too small or hard to balance, you’re probably not going to be excited to return.

• For your safety, stay close to the shoreline and use a leash while paddling lakes and reservoirs as it lessens the chance of being hit by a boat or getting caught in high winds and getting separated from your board. The views are better close to shore anyhow.

• Best safety practices on rivers are different than on flatwater. First, make sure you’re ready for the challenges of the river as there is no pause button. Second, get a helmet and leash that releases easily if it gets hung up on a tree or rocks.

WHERE TO SUP For advanced and new paddlers alike, here are five great places to SUP in Utah this summer: 1. Pebble Beach at Deer Valley Resort — No boats, no waves, and no strong currents make this spot ideal for beginners. With a nice grassy area to stage from and an easy sandy beach transition into the water, your experience here is sure to be a good one. The Deer Valley Grocery~Cafe even has outdoor dining overlooking the water. Park City Standup Paddleboarding offers lessons, rentals, sales, yoga, and fitness classes here. Come try SUP here before going out and purchasing your first standup paddleboard. Just bring your swimsuit!

2. Jordanelle State Park near Park City — Just 10 minutes from Historic Main Street in Park City, this high alpine mountain reservoir offers amazing views and beautiful wildlife. Early morning and late afternoons are generally the best times of day to paddle, as winds are usually calmer.

Experienced SUPers can take on a long distance paddle to where the Upper Provo River feeds the reservoir. Paddle Pedal Paddle and Park City SUP Festival take place here and Park City SUP offers lessons.

3. Sand Hollow State Park near St. George — An exceptional option for spring and fall months, the clear, warm waters and surrounding red rock formations make this spot ideal after cools off, longer than northern Utah. Get a rental from local outfitter Dig Paddle Sports.

4. Provo River — As your skill set increases, try river paddling here.

The Provo River is relatively calm and has exceptional clarity. The best place to start is just below the Deer Creek Dam. You’ll paddle down Provo Canyon past large pine trees and towering mountains before reaching a train bridge around the Wildwood area that divides the river into three channels with the bridge support posts. It’s safest to pull your board out here and walk around as boards can get hung up on the posts, which can be dangerous. Then get back on the water and paddle to the take-out at Vivian Park, about an hour downstream. Park City SUP offers guided trips down the Provo and Weber rivers.

5. Colorado River in Moab — Paddling down the Colorado River around Moab should be on every paddler’s bucket list. Sections of this river are so calm that if the wind is blowing upstream you will almost come to a standstill. The towering red rock walls and surrounding beauty are simply stunning. Paddle Moab is an excellent guide service that offers information, shuttles up river, and guided tours. Some sections have serious whitewater, so check with a local pro before your first float.

FOR YOGIS Prefer practicing vinyasas to paddling around a lake? Lucky for you, options for SUP yoga in Utah are growing. Try outdoor classes at Deer Valley during summer months, indoor classes at the Park City Aquatic Center year-round, classes inside the crater at Midway’s Homestead Resort, or book a tour on local lakes that include paddling and anchoring the boards before practicing SUP Yoga and paddling back to shore.
