What’s New at Utah Ski Resorts ALTA SKI AREA Alta is turning 80 this winter, making it Utah’s oldest lift-served resort, and they’re celebrating with a new high-speed quad chairlift named Supreme. Ski season is almost here! If you usually buy a season pass to one or two of Utah’s many magnificent resorts, you know it includes as many vertical feet as you can handle, but your season pass also includes a bevy of other benefits such as skiing multiple days for free at partner resorts and steep discounts on food, lodging, and shopping.

Here’s what’s on the menu at some of Utah’s major ski resorts for the 2017/2018 ski and snowboard season: SKI UTAH skiutah.com Gold Pass $4,900 // Silver Pass $3,150 For ballers and ballers-in-training who purchased the Gold Pass, remember it’s fully transferable and valid for 50 days at each of Utah’s 14 resorts, except Park City, where it’s good for 100 days of skiing—so share the wealth. The Silver Pass is non-transferable, but is valid for 30 days at all 14 resorts.

M.A.X. PASS (Multi-Alpine Experience) themaxpass.com Adult Pass $679 // Adult Season Pass Add-On $329 In North America, 39 mountains are part of the M.A.X. Pass, which allows skiers and snowboarders the freedom to visit participating resorts for five days each with no blackout dates. If you already purchased a season pass at Solitude or Brighton, you can purchase an add-on M.A.X. Pass anytime and gain full access.

How many resorts can you visit before the end of the season?

4 Overlooked Fall Hikes Along the Wasatch

Looking for a trail to take in the beauty of fall in northern Utah? The Wasatch Front offers unmatched outdoor play year-round, but the enchanting, vibrant hues of fall leaves make September through November one of the best times of year to lace up your hiking boots.

These trails get you away from the crowds clamoring for orange, red, and yellow leaves, and onto new terrain where you just might find some solitude to take it all in.

SMUGGLER’S GAP City Creek Canyon City Creek Canyon is no secret, but there’s a gem of a trail hiding in it that’s often forgotten about. Smuggler’s Gap connects City Creek Canyon with nearby Little Black Mountain, and is ideal for its accessibility to downtown and vast vantage points. During the 5-mile drive up the canyon, you’ll experience thick fall foliage in yellows and orange. From the top, you’ll see the autumnal colors of seven canyons stretching out below. To the east, the views extend out to the Great Salt Lake and Antelope Island.

Getting There Visit on an even-numbered day, as on odd-numbered days, the canyon is accessible only to cyclists. Pay the $3 entrance fee, and proceed up the canyon as far as you can drive. Park your car at Rotary Park and take the trail heading east up the narrow canyon.

After 10 minutes or so, you’ll see the Smuggler’s Gap Trailhead on your right. This trail isn’t long or difficult, but it does gain a lot of elevation rather quickly. There are sections where brush is overgrown and unavoidable, so long pants are a good idea to protect your skin.

BUTTERFIELD PEAKS Butterfield Canyon See aspen groves alight with brilliant golden leaves, juxtaposed with resolute evergreens on the Salt Lake Valley’s west side in the majestic Oquirrh Mountains. This range is often overlooked, possibly due to an assumption that all of the land is private property. While there is a lot of acreage that is privately owned, there remains plenty of space that is publicly accessible. Butterfield Canyon lies south of the mining operations, and links the Salt Lake Valley with Tooele to the west. The peaks offer a unique view of the valley stretching out to the north, the point of the mountain in front of you, and Utah Lake to the south.

Getting There From 12600 South, take Herriman’s Main Street as it winds its way up towards the mountains. Right before the road cuts north turning into US-111, turn left on an unmarked (but paved) road that leads you up to the canyon. At the pass, find a small parking area on your left. Three obvious trails lead up the mountain to the south of the parking area, take the third trail (far right) for about 10 feet before cutting left on a path that ascends quickly. Proceed on the evident trail through groves, meadows, and exposed ridges until you see the radio towers on Butterfield Peaks.

FRARY PEAK Antelope Island Antelope Island is extremely popular for visitors passing through Utah to get a view of the Great Salt Lake. But many don’t take the time to explore the island’s trails and visit it’s highest point: Frary Peak. Butterfield Peaks, Butterfield Canyon avoid the worst of the insects that can plague the lake during warmer weather. The buttery flax-colored grasses and vegetation offer a different kind of scene to experience harvest hues than the popular forests of the east-bench canyons.

The trail gains over 2,000 feet in elevation over the 3.2 miles to the peak, so be prepared for the climb and direct sun. After enjoying the otherworldly views from the top, make your way back down the same trail. If possible, plan to make it to your vehicle in time to catch the sunset from the west side of the island. With the reflection of the sun on the water and the nearly unobstructed view of the westerly sky, it’s a spectacular place to catch a colorful sunset.

Getting There The island is a state park, so you’ll pay a $10 fee as you enter via the access road from I-15 in Layton. Bike or walk in and pay just $3. State park status also means the trails are well maintained and mapped, making this one of the least remote hikes on our list. Follow the road south on the east coast of the island, and watch for signage for the Frary Peak Trailhead. Your journey will take you on a moderate trail, high above the lake that surrounds you.

ALPENBOCH LOOP Little Cottonwood Canyon Little Cottonwood Canyon is one of the busiest in the state, with a plethora of beautiful—and crowded—fall hiking trails. But for ¦¦¦

Alpenboch Loop, Little Cottonwood Canyon incredible views of the surrounding granite peaks and colorful fall foliage, there’s no need to drive all the way up the canyon. Alpenboch Loop is known to many climbers, as it leads to climbing routes like ‘Bong Eater’, ‘Crescent Crack’, and ‘The Egg’, but a trail was recently developed for hikers of all levels.

The easy path offers great reward with little effort. Sunrise is an ideal time for this hike, as the light rising from the east casts magical rays down the canyon walls, illuminating the valley floor below.

Getting There Park in the lower canyon parking lot on the north side of the canyon road (opposite the popular Temple Quarry Trailhead), and find the trailhead ascending from the far west end of the lot. From there, enjoy an easy one-mile loop that goes up to the rock faces and around back to the parking lot.

Donate other goods so folks in need can enjoy the outdoors too. Separate the gear into activities or item type to ready it for storage.

3. HANG IT OR BIN IT Use hanging hooks, a closet, or a wall rack to make jackets, daypacks, and other frequently used gear easy to find, placing items used for the same activities together. If you have the space, hang sleeping bags in mesh sacks, and packs alongside. Fill rarely used backpacks with gear that needs a home, like sleeping pads.

Next, place smaller items like flashlights, cooking utensils, sunglasses, and other gear knickknacks in clear plastic bins organized by activity: camping, biking, hiking, running, etc. This makes grabbing gear for a post-work trail run easy. Place sport-specific clothing or accessories in bins too if you like to keep them separate from your everyday ensemble. Invest in a shoe rack to keep muddy hiking shoes and wet ski boots away from your work wear.

Pro Tip: Keep your hiking back pack stocked with essentials you always need, including first aid kit, emergency blanket, and headlamp, so you won’t forget them when in a hurry.

Is your gear closet overflowing? Have you considered giving up an activity purely so you won’t need the gear? If you’re answered yes to any of these questions, you’re probably a gearaholic.

The first step is admitting you’re a gearaholic; the second step is doing something about it. Having lots of outdoor hobbies isn’t the problem, but finding places to safely and smartly stash all your equipment is.

Now that fall is upon us, use the lull between mountain biking and ski seasons to sort your gear, buy some organizational goods, and put a system in place so you can grab and go on the first powder day.

1. CREATE DEDICATED SPACE The best place to start is finding a home in your house for your gear.

Whether it’s a closet, a bookshelf, or a shed, keep it all in one location if possible so you can easily find what you need without cluttering up your life.

ADD LABELS AND STASH YOUR STUFF It may sound nerdy, but you can amp up your organization and make things even easier to find—especially when switching out seasonal items—by labeling tote bins and boxes, especially if the bins aren’t clear. Labeling doesn’t just need to mean a cheesy sticker that says ‘Camping Gear’ either. I decorate bins with stickers from places I’ve been, making every trip a fun reminder of the last one.

Once these steps are done, take your organized bins and place them in your gear closet, on a shelving unit, or simply stack them in a basement or garage. This newfound organization means no more searching for missing headlamps, giving you more time than ever to get out and enjoy the outdoors.

Utah’s Best Autumn Mountain Bike Rides

The best resource map I found to gauge the peak (across the entire country) is smokymountains.com/fall-foliage-map.

The changing of the leaves: From late September to early November, late summer’s dusty bike trails transform into a kaleidoscope carpet of colors. Riding knobby tires over this multicolored landscape, kicking up dried leaves along the way, is one of the more religious experiences a mountain biker can have.

Much like spring’s “brown pow” a day after a rainstorm, autumn riding at fall’s peak colors is not to be missed.

Trails spanning several hundred miles from north to south, with thousands of feet in varied elevation, makes timing peak colors a challenge in Utah. Generally speaking, northern Utah begins to turn color in early September, with peak color happening the last week of September. Down in Dixie—think St. George and Zion—lateOctober is prime time, through the month of November.

Last winter saw some of Utah’s deepest snow totals in several years, leading to a green, healthy spring. And thanks to plenty of moisture throughout summer, at least by our high desert standards, this autumn should pop with yellows, oranges, and reds.

Mountain bikers who want to add some color in their lives before it all turns white can make like a powder storm chaser and follow the season’s peak from north to south and extend one of Utah’s best seasons upon two fat tires. Here are a few of my favorite trails around the Beehive State for aspens, maples, and cottonwood colors galore. Road trip!

PARK CITY: FLYING DOG TRAIL When to Ride: Late September Topping out over 7,500 feet, with about 1,400’ of elevation change, Flying Dog takes riders through several vegetation zones.Beginning in a sage-filled desert and climbing through stands of oak and under towering aspens shimmering a golden yellow or bright orange, Flying Dog explodes when timed right. Along the southern portion of the trail, views of Park City and Deer Valley Resort’s allows riders to gauge when the ski hills will reach their color pinnacle—usually a week or so behind the Flying Dog area.

PARK CITY: MID-MOUNTAIN TRAIL When to Ride: Late September–early October Beginning at Silver Lake in Deer Valley, and tracing through Park City Mountain Resort, this 20+ mile singletrack trail does its best to stick to about 8,000 feet: prime aspen elevation. Ride as a one-way shuttle, an out-and-back, or create a loop using any of dozens of intersecting trail options, this is fall riding at its peak— pun intended. If you have the stamina, pedal up Armstrong and Pinecone or Shadow Lake to the Crest (see below) and add in some miles on Mid-Mountain on the return. Ride until your eyes have had all the sensory overload they can handle, or your legs give out, whichever happens first.

Riding in St. George SALT LAKE CITY/PARK CITY: WASATCH CREST TRAIL When to Ride: Late September–early October The granddaddy of ‘em all. One of Utah’s best trails, period. At any time of year. But especially in fall. At its lung-burning top elevation of 9,000 feet, with views of Big Cottonwood Canyon and Park City, the Crest delivers sights and incredible ridge riding and singletrack. When Guardsman’s Pass is packed with binocular-toting hikers, you can pedal yourself to a first-hand view of the best the tri-canyon area has to offer. A descent into Millcreek Canyon, and potentially all the way to Salt Lake City, takes riders through over 4,000 feet of elevation change with plenty of autumn color along the way.

UTAH COUNTY: BLACKHAWK LOOP When to Ride: Early October Just over an hour south of downtown SLC, the Mt. Nebo Loop is one of Utah’s most scenic drives, and the Blackhawk Loop parallels the stretch just beyond Payson. Typically ridden as a loop, with several trailhead options and distance/elevation choices. Camping at the Blackhawk Campground is recommended, as the circumnavigation of Mt. Nebo is an incredible fall drive, and nearby Maple Canyon offers stunning colors, rock climbing, and hiking.

CEDAR CITY: NAVAJO LAKE LOOP When to Ride: Late September The deep red rock of nearby Cedar Breaks National Monument is always a beautiful sight, but biking around Navajo Lake adds the autumn colors of aspen and oak to the visual palette. Clocking in at over 10 miles with just a couple hundred feet of elevation gain, this is a family-accessible ride, so pack a picnic and pedal to a spot with a nice view. Fall comes early here, as the trail is at 9,000 feet, with views of the lake nearly the entire way. The glimmering blue provides excellent contrast for the changing colors of aspen, along with the greens of pine and fir trees. The whole rainbow can be found on Highway 14. ¦¦¦

SOUTHERN UTAH/ST GEORGE: COVE WASH TRAIL When to Ride: Mid-October–November After the higher elevations and northern areas have dropped their leaves, head south for warm days and a final blast of colored leaves post-Halloween. Zion National Park is an obvious destination, with many great hikes to find yellow, orange, or fiery red leaves set to a backdrop of sandstone cathedrals.

Aboard two wheels, however, most of the riding in the area is through red rock desert areas. The Pine Valley Mountains to the west of St. George are an island of green in the desert, topping out at over 10,000 feet, along with the adjacent Cottonwood Canyon and Forest that transitions the Colorado Plateau to the Mojave Desert. This time of year, riding in the Santa Clara River Preserve offers views of Pine Valley’s peaks 7,000 feet above the valley, along with a few of pockets of color just below your tires in the town of Santa Clara and neighboring stream lined with cottonwoods.

A bike trip to the St. George area allows Utahns the opportunity to extend autumn; one of the state’s best, yet shortest, fleeting seasons.

What better way to get a few more rides in while the ski resorts fill in with the first few snowfalls of the season?

What It Takes to Return From Traumatic Injury or Illness

Most runners and other athletes experience injuries as part of extensive training. It’s simply unavoidable. But what happens when a serious accident results in surgery and rehabilitation? Is it possible to return to a competitive or intensive level again?

own recovery. People who do the best have the attitude of ‘I’m going to get better no matter what’.”

ROAD TO RECOVERY The trip to recovery usually begins in an emergency room. After surgery, patients can start self-directed therapy for the first six weeks. Stiffness is the biggest problem with a joint—whether it’s knee, ankle, or hip. The first step is to get it moving. This phase doesn’t involve stretching or endurance became the bone is still healing and can’t withstand pressure. Rothberg says that many athletes are so in tune with their bodies that they don’t need a therapist at this stage.

Dr. David L. Rothberg is an orthopaedic trauma surgeon at the University of Utah Department of Orthopaedics who works with patients who’ve sustained traumatic injuries; in other words he repairs fractures. He treats manly polytrauma patients, those with multiple injuries. Polytrauma injuries are usually sustained from high-speed motor vehicle accidents or falls. Dr. Rothberg says, “I see everything from grandmas who fall on the ice to rock climbers falling from the side of a cliff.” His job is to help them return to presurgery health and activity.

Around 6–8 weeks the real work begins—helped along with the orthopaedic surgeon, physical therapist, and occupational therapist. Initial concerns are when they will be able to walk again and when limitations will be lifted. There’s a lot of tangible progress in the first three months; then the progress slows.

Rothberg works with patients long after the initial surgery as part of the rehabilitative team. He can see patients for up to a year or two after surgery.

ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING “Mental anguish can set in when an athlete is taking so long to return to pre-injury activity. It takes more of a mental commitment,” Rothberg says. A high level athlete can take a year or longer to get back what they lost. The average jogger can achieve their level of activity in 3–6 months.

From Rothberg’s perspective, the hardest thing is counseling patients who are frustrated with how long it’s taking to recover.

According to Rothberg most people can get back to what they were doing pre-surgery, “It is very rare that we would tell someone not to try,” he says.

There are many factors that affect recovery—starting with how good a job the surgeon does putting a patient back together. But Rothberg believes that one of the biggest factors is a patient’s own attitude, “There is a pretty intimate interplay between self-efficacy and rehab. Do they think they are going to get better? As much as we think as surgeons that we influence the outcome, the best thing is helping them know they can get better and have faith in their 22«

six months to a year before they compete at —a belief that recovery is possible to pull through a protracted rehabilitation period.

SETTING A GOAL Rothberg recommends his patients think of recovery as training for the next level in their sport.

Athletes who set a goal to advance, from amateurs to pros, create a challenge for themselves and do whatever is necessary to achieve it. If they view recovery in that manner rather than creating a roadblocks the works gets easier.

Rothberg has a sister and brother-in-law who compete in snow biking and says he’s watched them “torture” themselves to progress in the pro categories. The training regiments they use to advance are not unlike the regiments patients face to recover. It’s just a matter of getting to the next goal.

A sports career or active lifestyle doesn’t have to end with injury or illness. With good medical care and determination it is possible to regain stamina, form, and a competitive edge.
