ANNUAL REPORT 2014-2015
OUR LEADERSHIP MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR The role of the Board of Directors is to provide leadership, strategic direction and oversight for the organization. We are proud to help the SportMedBC membership and staff provide the “Best People, Best Practices and Best Programs” to the sport system and general public in British Columbia. The 20th anniversary of the Sun Run InTraining program was a significant achievement in 2014-2015. Thank you to The Vancouver Sun for its continued support. The steady growth of the Aboriginal RunWalk program is also very gratifying and we acknowledge all of the program’s funders, partners and community supporters. The Board of SportMedBC, driven by our strategic plan, reviewed our membership structure, services and communication. We are proposing a more inclusive membership to better position SportMedBC to deliver meaningful programs and services to our stakeholders. We also want to provide more educational opportunities to members, and make better use of the expertise of professionals who work in Sport Medicine, Sport and Exercise Science and Health Promotion. A number of members have stepped forward to sit on five new committees beginning this fall. Thank you. 2015-2016 will see the launch of a new Speaker Series for sport clubs and local associations through a pilot program with curling, soccer and hockey. We are also committed to expanding RunWalk programming and improving outreach and opportunities to regions around the province. Thank you for your continued interest and support. Dr. David Cox, Chairman, SportMedBC
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE It’s wonderful being back at SportMedBC for a few months to fill in for Alison Cristall while she is on maternity leave. 2014-2015 was another successful year for the programs and services of SportMedBC. A highlight was the 20th year of the Sun Run InTraining program. During that time, InTraining has been enjoyed by 56,000 participants, led by 13,750 volunteer leaders and clinic coordinators. Sun Run InTraining has become part of the fabric of the country’s largest public running event. The strong and beneficial partnership with The Vancouver Sun through Sun Run InTraining represents one way that SportMedBC strives to live our Vision of being a “trusted resource for Best Practices in Sport Medicine, Sport and Exercise Science and Health Promotion.” Sport Safety is a core programming and educational component of SportMedBC’s work. In 2014-2015, courses and workshops were delivered to over 1,000 individuals, and event medical coverage was provided for 31 championships and other events. The Northern Safe Sport Tour visited 15 northern communities to deliver sport safety education. A membership review was conducted in the fall of 2014, and the subsequent recommendations will drive member services, communication, member professional development and enhanced engagement with colleagues, the sport system and key stakeholders. There will be a presentation at the AGM to discuss improved member servicing. As always, you are invited to work with us as instructors, workshop developers, event medical personnel, committee members or by providing input and ideas.
