Bullying y Cyberbullying delitos penalizados en Michigan Un 77 por ciento de los niños han sido víctimas de bullying al menos una vez

ctubre es el mes nacional de la prevención del acoso escolar también conocido como bullying, el cual ha aumentado considerablemente tanto en las escuelas como en las redes sociales, afectando a miles de niños víctimas de maltratos por parte de compañeros de clases, y en algunos casos incluso llevándolos al suicidio a raíz de ello.

El acoso físico, verbal y emocional en la escuela o las redes sociales es un problema que afecta a un 28 por ciento de los estudiantes de 6to a 12vo grado. El mismo, de no ser detectado a tiempo puede llevar a la víctima al aislamiento, la depresión y hasta el suicidio.

Como parte de una campaña a nivel nacional y estatal para reducir no sólo el maltrato o bullying en las escuelas, sino también en las redes sociales y el internet, el gobernador del estado de Michigan, Rick Snyder propuso una ley para prohibir y penalizar el bullying cibernético, la cual empezó a funcionar a finales de marzo del 2015. Snyder ha mantenido una postura firme en contra del bullying.

“Estamos dando un gran paso confrontando el bullying que se da en nuestras escuelas, y por eso la importancia de seguir expandiendo recur-

sos para enfrentar otros tipos de acoso como el cyberbullying”, dice Snyder.

Según estadísticas del American Justice Department bullying statistics, un 35 por ciento de los niños ha sido víctima de bullying cibernético, mientras que un 77 por ciento de los estudiantes admiten haber sido víctimas de bullying al menos una vez en la escuela.

En las escuelas públicas de la ciudad de Grand Rapids, el bullying está prohibido y penalizado con expulsión para quienes incurran en actos de acoso o maltrato a algún compañero de clase.

De acuerdo con el American Association of Suicidology los registros de suicidios por bullying han aumentado en un 50% en niños de 1014 años de edad en los últimos 30 años; es por ello la importancia de que padres y maestros detecten a tiempo cuando un niño o adolescente está siendo víctima de bullying o está sumido en depresión a raíz de eso.

ctober is National Bullying Prevention Month, a month dedicated to the prevention and awareness of this act that so many are affected by, Thousands of children have been victims of this abuse by their peers, some cases even resulting in suicide.

Physical, verbal and emotional bullying in school or social networks is a problem that affects 28 percent of students in 6th through 12th grade. If not addressed early and correctly, it can lead the victim to depression, social isolation and in the worst cases, suicide.

an effort to reduce not only physical and verbal bullying, but also through social networks and the Internet. This national and state campaign began in March of 2015, but Snyder has always had a firm stance against bulliying.

"We have already taken a big step in confronting the verbal and physical bullying that happens in our schools, so we are now focusing our efforts to expand our resources and address other types of harassment, such as cyberbullying.� says Snyder.

According to statistics from the American Justice Department, 77 percent of students admit to being bullied at least once in school and 35 percent of children have been victims of cyberbullying.

In Grand Rapids Public Schools, bullying or other harassment is prohibited and punishable by expulsion, for those engaging in the abuse.

According to the American Association of Suicidology, records show suicides due to bullying have increased by 50% in children 10-14 years of age, in the last 30 years. The importance of addressing bullying and preventing it cannot be understated, and it is the responsibility of parents and teachers to address it correctly if someone is being bullied or harassed.

o te hace sentir cómo si estuvieras metiéndote en el lago?", pregunta Sara Adlerstein-González, sus brazos extendidos a ambos lados como si estuviera disfrutando de la brisa marina a medida que entra en la galería de arte Washington Street Gallery cuyas murallas exhiben pinturas cargadas de azules, con motas ocasionales de verdes y marrón.

"Así lo planifiqué para que uno realmente se sienta como si estuviera a punto de sumergirse en el agua", dice señalando la pinturas en su más reciente exposición de arte: "Al agua, con amor supremo".

Originaria de Concepción, Chile, AdlersteinGonzález se enamoró de la naturaleza y el arte cuando era muy joven, una pasión que ha llevado a lo largo de su vida profesional.

"Cuando yo era una niña, escribía poesía, ilustraba mis libros de poesía, y más tarde empecé a ser más consciente de otros medios y empecé a probar oleos y técnicas mixtas," dijo.

Adlerstein-González estudió biología en el Instituto de Ciencias Biológicas de la Universidad de Concepción y su investigación se enfocó en los ecosistemas acuáticos al hacer su tesis sobre el fitoplancton de agua dulce - organismos microscópicos que habitan la capa iluminada de casi todos los océanos y cuerpos de agua dulce.

Su investigación se centró en el río Maule, uno de los ríos más grandes de Chile. "¿

Después de graduarse, Adlerstein-González trabajó como investigadora en la Subsecretaría de Pesca de Chile antes de hacer su maestría y doctorado en la Universidad de Washington en Seattle. Más tarde, se trasladó con su esposo, Edgar Meyhofer, a Alemania, donde Sara trabajó en la Universidad de Hamburgo.

Cuando a Meyhofer le ofrecieron un trabajo en la U-M siete años más tarde, Sara se unió U-M como investigadora de la Escuela de Recursos Naturales y Medio Ambiente, enfocando su investigación en ecología acuática y los ecosistemas de los Grandes Lagos.

Dice que para ella, el amor al arte y la ciencia siempre han estado presentes.

"El arte y la ciencia para mí están muy conectados, son una cosa", dice. "Es la práctica del arte y la ciencia que hace mejor ciencia y mejor técnica. Es en esa intersección donde se puede aportar ideas y sentimientos. Hay tantas capas y eso es lo que trato de enseñar en mi clase en las artes y el medio ambiente: No es el producto en sí. Es el proceso".

Paseando por la galería, Sara señala los diferentes temas de sus pinturas: la muerte, la interconexión de los sistemas terrestres y acuáticos, el cambio climático.

Una pintura llamada "En mis elementos" tiene nubes blancas en la parte superior y un profundo azul en la parte inferior, con trazos de color marrón en el centro.

“Te hace sentir como estar en un avión rodeado de nubes, casi en un sueño. Captura esa sensación de estar en todas partes pero en ninguna parte,” dice, pensativa. “Creo que tiene que ser con la vida después de la muerte, cuando se convierte en parte de la naturaleza de una manera diferente ... integrado. Aquí, volvemos a de donde venimos: el agua, la tierra, un lugar allí, el espíritu flotante..”

En la U-M, Adlerstein-González ha creado cursos interdisciplinarios en el arte y el medio ambiente y ha participado en proyectos de divulgación y educación acerca de la conservación a través del arte. En SNRE, creó la Galería de Arte y Medio Ambiente para ofrecer un trabajo que habla de cómo las personas interactúan y entienden la naturaleza y para llamar la atención sobre el papel del arte en la educación y cuidado del medio ambiente.

Este otoño, enseñará "Arte y Naturaleza" en el Residential College, un curso que examinará, en español, las conexiones entre la cultura y la naturaleza y cómo uno influye y cambia la otra.

"La ciencia nos ayuda a entender el mundo en que vivimos y la forma en que se ve afectado por nosotros, pero eso no siempre es suficiente para hacer que nos importe", dice. "El arte nos ayuda a entendernos a nosotros mismos, y en su lenguaje universal puede hablar a nuestros sentidos, producir emoción y hace abrir nuestros corazones para abrazar los cambios necesarios".

Science through the eyes of an artist Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 to October 15)

on’t you feel like you’re taking a dip in the lake as you come into the gallery?” asks Sara Adlerstein-Gonzalez as she enters the Washington Street Gallery in downtown Ann Arbor, arms outreached as if she could feel the ocean breeze, paintings charged with blues and occasionally green and brown specks on both sides of the entrance.

“I planned it like this, so you really feel like you’re immersing yourself in the water,” she says pointing at the paintings in her most recent art exhibit: “Here is to water, with love supreme.”

Originally from the city of Concepción on Chile’s coast, Adlerstein-Gonzalez fell in love with nature and art when she was quite young, a passion that has carried throughout her career.

“When I was a kid, I was writing poetry, illustrating my poetry books, and later on I started being more aware of other mediums and started playing with oils and mixed media,” she said.

Adlerstein-Gonzalez studied biology at the Institute for Biological Sciences at the Universidad de Concepcion and her research became more related to aquatic ecosystems as she focused for her thesis on freshwater phytoplankton - microscopic organisms that inhabit the upper sunlit layer of almost all oceans and bodies of fresh water. Her research focused on the Maule River, one of Chile’s largest rivers.

She worked at the Undersecretary of Fisheries in Chile before pursuing her master's and doctorate degrees at the University of Washington. She and her husband, Edgar Meyhofer, moved to his native Germany, where she worked at the University of Hamburg.

When Meyhofer was offered a position at U-M seven years later, she joined the university’s School of Natural Resources and Environment as a research faculty, conducting research focusing mostly on aquatic ecology in Great Lakes populations and ecosystems.

Both of her loves - art and science- have always been present.

“Art and science to me are very connected. They are one thing,” she said. “It’s the practice of art and science that makes bet“

ter science and better art. It’s at that intersection where you can bring ideas and feelings. There’s so many layers and that’s what I try to teach in my class in arts and environment: It’s not the product per se.

It’s the process,” she said.

Walking around the gallery, she points out the different topics her paintings touch: human impact on the environment, death, the interconnectivity of terrestrial and aquatic systems, climate change.

A painting called “In my elements” has white clouds on top and deep blue at the bottom, with strokes of brown in the middle and lighter blue brushes on the white, It makes you feel like being in a plane surrounded by clouds, almost in a dream, she said.

“It captures that feeling of being everywhere but nowhere. I think it has to be with life after death, when you become part of nature in a different way… integrated. Not like we are now that we think ourselves as separate. Here, we go back to where we came from: water, earth, some place there,

the spirit floating.”

At U-M, Adlerstein-Gonzalez has created interdisciplinary courses in art and environment and participated in outreach and education projects about conservation through the arts. At SNRE, she created the Art and Environment Gallery to feature work that speaks to how people interact and understand the environment and to draw attention to the role of art in environmental education and stewardship.

This fall, she’s teaching “Arte y Naturaleza,” (Art and Nature) at the Residential College, a course in Spanish that will examine the connections between culture and nature and how one influences and changes the other.

“Science helps us understand the world where we live and how it is affected by us, but that is not always enough to make us care,” she says.

“Art helps us understand ourselves, and in its universal language can speak to our senses, produce emotion and open our hearts to embrace the changes needed,” she says.

Lizeth Alanis Mes de Concientización sobre el Cáncer de Seno

“El cáncer te da dos opciones: te rindes o luchas, yo decidí luchar”

ener fe Dios, una familia que la apoya y no rendirse ante el dolor, han sido la clave para que Lizeth venciera por tercera ocasión en sólo 3 años, el cáncer de mama con el que ha batallado desde que le fue detectado en tercer grado en julio del 2012. Sin ningún antecedente de cáncer en su familia, Lizeth Alanis fue diagnosticada con cáncer de mama cuando tenía 38 años de edad. Cuenta lo difícil que fue para ella con dos hijas pequeñas y un esposo la primera fase de la enfermedad.

“Me llamaron y me dieron los resultados por teléfono, sentí mucho miedo porque uno piensa que se va a morir, pero el cáncer te da dos opciones, te rindes o luchas, y yo decidí luchar por mi familia”, dice Lizeth.

Cuenta que una vez completado el primer tratamiento de 13 quimioterapias, una mastectomía y 33 radiaciones, el cáncer volvió, y nuevamente enfrentó la enfermedad, sin embargo no concluyó ahí, luego de terminar su segundo tratamiento en noviembre del 2014, en diciembre de ese mismo año fue nuevamente diagnosticada con cáncer, resultado que asumió con entereza por tercera ocasión, siendo sometida a un tratamiento que concluyó el pasado 21 de julio, tras 8 quimioterapias, una cirugía y 33 radicaciones ( dos radiaciones al día), desde entonces Lizeth vive libre de cáncer.

“Mis hijas asumieron responsabilidades antes de tiempo y mi esposo me ha apoyado enormemente, no sé qué hubiese sido sin ellos”, manifiesta.

Lizeth quiere servir de ejemplo para las mujeres que tienen cáncer de

mama, demostrándoles que no están solas y que es un proceso que se puede sobrepasar con amor, por tal motivo creo su propia página de prevención y orientación sobre el cáncer en la red social de Facebook, la cual se llama: Ayúdame a Vencer el Cáncer en Michigan, allí se dedica a dar consejos y compartir experiencias sobre su enfermedad con sus seguidores.

Los grupos de ayuda como la fundación Susan G. Komen también le han servido de soporte y motivación para continuar la lucha, y dice que en estos grupos encuentra la fortaleza y apoyo de gente que le han demostrado que no está sola.

“Trato de asistir a todos los grupos de apoyo que puedo, cuando voy a las reuniones me doy cuenta que no soy la única y que hay situaciones peores que la nuestra, además de muchos motivos por los cuales seguir luchando día a día”, manifiesta.

El mejor consejo que Lizeth envía a todas las mujeres de todas las edades, con o sin antecedentes familiares de cáncer, es realizarse el estudio de la mamografía en el tiempo estimado y los autos chequeos cada mes.

“Es mejor prevenir que lamentar, porque mientras más tarde se detecta, más avanzada es la etapa del cáncer y más fuerte el procedimiento, así que les recomiendo a todas las mujeres a realizarse sus exámenes”, exhorta.

Uno de los artículos publicados por Lizeth en su página de Facebook, relata como a pesar del dolor, ha dado la batalla a una enfermedad que se ha propuesto vencer. “’ Quejarse es en vano, tenemos que ponernos en la mente y aceptar cada cambio, cada dolor o cada reacción que pueda tener nuestro cuerpo a los pesados tratamientos (Quimioterapias), pues al final de que nos sirve lamentarnos y llorar? eso no nos quitará el dolor ni mucho menos la enfermedad, nada más nos va doler más la cabeza, dar gracias el día que todo parezca normal porque no sabes cuándo eso cambiará y volverás a sentirte mal, es una montaña rusa de emociones tal vez hoy te sientes bien pero en 3 minutos y con unas palabras todo puede cambiar, aceptas el dolor como parte de tu vida, ahora las inyecciones no te duelen más, la prueba de sangre se vuelve normal y rutinaria y cada día es una nueva clase de la cual aprendemos que las pequeñas cosas que al parecer son insignificantes son las que más valen, cosas tan sencillas como ver todos los días un paisaje y ver qué tan maravilloso es, poder bañarte y vestirte por sí sola, y muchas cosas que a simple vista parecen sencillas pero cambian tu vida de una manera impresionante, nunca me imaginé dar gracias porque no me dio vómito, diarrea o al encontrar una postura cómoda para dormir.

Vivir cada día sin pensar en el mañana se vuelve algo indispensable y cuando llegas a un punto, rendirte no es una opción, solamente piensas, " he luchado tanto para rendirme hoy" nooooooo y vuelves a sacar fuerzas no sé de donde para seguir luchando, (papa Dios nos da esa fuerza de seguir adelante a pesar de tanto dolor)”, extraído de la grupo en Facebook Ayúdame a Vencer el Cáncer en Michigan.

El cáncer de mama afecta a una de cada ocho mujeres en los Estados Unidos, donde un 30 por ciento de los cánceres que padecen las mujeres corresponden al cáncer de mama, y la mayoría de los diferentes tipos de este cáncer son curables de ser detectados a tiempo. Por eso debes realizarte tu auto examen mensual y mamografía anual, y así puedes alargar tu vida.

Breast cancer affects one in eight women in the United States, which is the most curable if detected in time. A monthly self-exam and annual mammogram can be essential to the prevention of breast cancer.

er supportive family, faith God, and persistence have been the key to Lizeth beating breast cancer for the third time since her first diagnoses in July 2012. Without a cancerous history of cancer in her family, Alanis Lizeth was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 38 years old. She tells us the difficulty she faced during its first phase for her two young daughters and husband.

"As [the doctors] called me and gave me the results over the phone, I felt very scared because I thought I was going to die, but cancer gives you two options. You surrender or fight, and I decided to fight for my family," says Lizeth.

After being diagnosed, Alanis completed 13 chemotherapy sessions, a mastectomy and 33 radiations, only to have the cancer return. Once again she faced the disease through chemotherapy and radiation treatment during the month of November in 2014. Unfortunately, it was not the end, as in December of the same year, she was again was diagnosed with the cancer. 8 chemotherapies, surgery and 33 filings (two radiations daily) later, she was pronounced cancer free July 21st.

"My daughters took many responsibilities and my husband has greatly supported me. I do not know what would have happened without them," she says.

Lizeth wants to set an example for women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer that they are not alone and that the disease can be fought with love and will. After her successful treatments, Alanis dedicated herself to breast cancer prevention and education, inspiring her to create a facebook page, Help Conquer Cancer in Michigan, where you can find a lot of reliable information and support.

Support groups such as the Susan G. Komen foundation will also have provided encouragement for people diagnosed and their families. These groups help people find strength in numbers and have a profound impact in patients’ moral.

"I try to attend all the support groups that I can. When I go to meetings, I realize that I am not alone and that I am better off than some, which are some of the reasons I keep fighting every day� adds Lizeth.

The best advice Alanis gives is for all women, no matter what age or family history, to have a mammogram and routine check-ups.

"Better safe than sorry, because while it can be treated later, a more advanced stage of cancer is harder to fight and more dangerous. So I recommend all women to get their exams," she says.

One of the articles published by Lizeth on his Facebook page recounts how, despite the pain, the battle against the cancer itself was not the biggest obstacle. "'Complain in vain, but we have to put ourselves in the mindset and accept the pain. The reaction and sickness we may endure during procedures is worth the fight because what good is it to grieve and mourn? It will not take away the pain, much less the disease. We need to thank every day we spend feeling well, because it is a roller coaster of emotions and feelings. All it takes is 3 minutes and a few words for our entire world to change. Accepting the pain becomes part of our life, along with daily injections. The little, seemingly insignificant things are worth the most,

Universidad de Michigan Health System lanza programa de trasplante de mano a Universidad de Michigan Health System ha lanzado un nuevo programa de trasplante de mano, el primero de su tipo en Michigan. UMHS está buscando activamente candidatos adultos para este tipo de cirugía.

Este será parte del programa de injerto vascular compuesto del Centro de Trasplantes UM, dedicado a los trasplantes implican diferentes tipos de tejido vascularizado como la piel, los músculos y los huesos. U-M planea hacer un trasplante de mano primero, pero este campo de trasplantes también incluyen cara, pared abdominal y otros tipos de trasplantes.

“En la última década, un número cada vez mayor de este tipo de trasplantes se han realizado en todo el mundo con resultados muy alentadores”, dijo John Magee, MD, director del Centro de Trasplantes de la U-M y un cirujano de trasplante.

University of Michigan Health System launches hand transplant program

UM Transplant Center program is first of its kind in Michigan he University of Michigan Health System has launched a new hand transplant program, the first of its kind in Michigan, and is actively seeking adult candidates for this life-altering surgery.

Hand transplantation is part of the U-M Transplant Center’s new vascular composite allograft program, which refers to transplants involving several different kinds of vascularized tissue like skin, muscle and bone. U-M plans to do a hand transplant first, but this field of transplantation also includes face, abdominal wall and other types of transplants.

“In the last decade, a rapidly growing number of these types of transplants have been performed worldwide with very encouraging outcomes,” says John Magee, M.D., director of the U-M Transplant Center and a transplant surgeon.

“U-M did the first organ transplant in the state of Michigan in 1964, so it’s fitting that we add this new transplant option for our patients. Our physicians have trained with the top hand transplant surgeons in the world, and we already have a long-standing history of a multidisciplinary approach to caring for transplant patients.”

About 540,000 people in the United States are living with an upper limb loss. Hand transplant provides a surgical procedure that transfers a hand from a deceased human donor to a patient who has lost one or both hands.

Hand transplantation can be an option for patients with amputations or injuries of the arm or hand, says U-M’s Kagan Ozer, M.D.,

who is the surgical director of the new program and has specialized in post-traumatic reconstruction in elbow and hand surgery.

“Regaining an arm or hand can vastly improve the quality of life of a patient, allowing them to do daily tasks. We believe hand transplantation can be a great option to help people who haven’t had success with other options like prosthetics,” says Ozer. who is also clinical associate professor of orthopaedic surgery at the U-M Medical School.

“Recipients say it makes a tremendous difference in their quality of life. They can grasp, touch, and most importantly feel objects. Restoration of sensation is currently not possible in other methods of reconstruction.”

U-M plans to seek candidates aged 18 to 65.

Hand transplants have been performed in the United States for about 15 years, but are still quite rare as only seven programs nationwide offer the transplants. Over 100 transplants have been done worldwide.

Hand transplantation is a complicated surgery, that can last up to 12 hours. The human hand consists of multiple bones, muscles, three major nerves and two major arteries along with numerous tendons, and veins.

“We have a long history of limb reconstruction and reattachment here at U-M, along with a strong transplant center with a proven history of managing patients both before and after transplant,” says Abhijit Naik, M.B.B.S., an assistant professor of nephrology and medical director of the new transplant program.

Candidates will be carefully screened, and evaluated by a team of experts in surgery, me-

dicine, transplantation, social work, and psychiatry. Those who are eligible will be placed on the waiting list for a donor hand. The waiting list is directed by the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network and administered locally by Gift of Life Michigan.

Young Cancer Survivors Often Develop New Malignancies

Teens, young adults who received radiation treatment appear at higher risk, study says een and young adult cancer survivors are at increased risk for other cancers later in life, a new study reveals. Researchers analyzed U.S. National Cancer Institute data on people who survived cancers before age 40. They had the most common types of cancers in that age group: leukemia, lymphoma, testicular, ovarian, thyroid, breast, soft tissue and bone cancers.

"This is a patient demographic that has been largely overlooked," said senior study author Dr. Robert Goldsby, a professor of pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco Benioff Children's Hospital.

Over 30 years, nearly 14 percent of the survivors were diagnosed with another, different type of cancer. On average, the se-

cond cancer occurred within 15 years.

Compared to people in the general population, patients successfully treated for cancer between ages 15 and 39 were nearly 60 percent more likely to develop cancer. In contrast, people successfully treated for cancer after age 40 were 10 percent more likely to develop another cancer.

The most common second cancers were breast, gastrointestinal and genital cancers, and melanoma skin cancer, the study found. Over 30 years, those who received radiation therapy for their first cancer were more likely to have a second cancer than those who did not have radiation therapy -- about 17 percent compared to 12 percent.

Of the 7,384 patients who developed second cancers, 1,195 also developed a

third cancer, according to the study published in the journal Cancer.

Cancer patients used to be told that after five years of remission, they no longer had special health care needs, Goldsby said in a university news release.

"But our study demonstrates that adolescent and younger adult survivors require lifelong follow-up with regular medical screening," he added.

In older adults, cancer frequently stems from age and the cumulative effects of long-term exposures or habits, such as smoking or unhealthy diet, he said. "But younger patients may harbor genetic changes that influence the risk of cancer.

They may need counseling if their lifestyle choices increase their existing risk," he explained.

ntre fútbol, comidas típicas, bailes folclóricos y música, se celebró el festival hispano en la ciudad de Grand Rapids, donde se dieron cita miles de personas de diferentes nacionalidades a disfrutar de la variedad cultural que caracteriza al festival.

Como parte de los eventos culturales auspiciado por el Centro Hispano del Oeste de Michigan, este año hubo un contenido más variado con el fin de acaparar un mayor público, como explica el director del centro Roberto Torres.

“Este año han venido más personas de lo estimado, y esperamos en los próximos años agregar más actividades para los adolescentes que vienen con sus padres a disfrutar de un evento familiar”, manifiesta Torres.

tuvieron su stand de comida en la feria estuvo México, Guatemala, Cuba, República Dominicana, Puerto Rico, Honduras, entre otros. Con una gastronomía variada entre tacos, arroz, empanadas, emparedados, surtidos, dulces y bebidas típicas de cada región.

Así mismo, bandas locales como Los Pikudos y grupos de baile de las iglesias y algunas escuelas se presentaron para entretener al público.

Los más pequeños encontraron diversión jugando fútbol y creando objetos en el stand de arte de Home Depot.

Los que asistieron a comprar también tuvieron espacio con varias tiendas de accesorios, ropas, utensilios y frutas diseminadas en el Calder Plaza donde tuvo lugar la feria hispana 2015.

etween football, traditional food, folk music and dance, the Hispanic festival in Grand Rapids brought together thousands of people from different nationalities to enjoy the cultural diversity that so wonderfully characterizes the festival.

As part of the cultural events the sponsor, Hispanic Center of West Michigan, the events held were more diverse and had more content in order to capture a larger audience, explains director Roberto Torres.

"This year more people than expected attended and we hope in the coming years to add more activities for the younger audience who come to enjoy the event with their

families," says Torres.

Food stands at the fair consisted of cuisine from Mexico, Guatemala, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Honduras, and others. The pallet consisted of tacos, rice, pies, sandwiches, assorted sweets and typical drinks of each region.

Local bands like The Pikudos, dance groups from churches and some schools entertained the crowd as they enjoyed the food and activities. Other activities included football, and an Art Home Depot.

For those who went to shop, there were several stands selling clothes, utensils, vegetables and accessories in the square where the festival took place.
