The 8yo Uncle Tommy carries top weight and his recent racing has been confined to sand and polytrack. He is a dogged galloper with the heart of a lion and his early turf form in the Cape was commendable.

It must be of some concern that he looks to have lost some toe with age – and

this has been confirmed by his late finishing efforts. He will probably be lacking a length or two early on. The balance of the Goosen runners Varbration (not striding out last time) and the only filly in the race in Seventh Symphony, have place prospects at best.

Scaling Heights Kenilworth 5th December The easiest victory in Cape Town on Saturday was undoubtedly that of SILVER MOUNTAIN in the Gr1 Cape Fillies Guineas. In what not surprisingly was the fastest of the afternoon’s three 1600m races Glen Puller’s charge raced in the backend of midfield early on. She quickened well at the top of the longer new course home straight and cruised clear to score by five after striking the front 350m out. The supporting act was the Gr2 Southern Cross Stakes over 1000m and in what proved to be a real thriller victory here went to the Gauteng raider CARRY ON ALICE. The race was first run in 1955 when won by Marion Island and in 1991 Star Effort became the first filly to clinch the Fillies – Colts’ Guineas double.

That is the historical mark that Silver Mountain will be bidding for when she takes on 16 top-class males at Kenilworth in what could be a highlight of the season.
