entre scrivo, siamo a metà maggio, sta appena iniziando la fase 2 post-Coronavirus, iniziamo gradualmente a rivedere la luce. In questa lunga, nuova e strana esperienza della quarantena, tutti abbiamo avuto modo di pensare e riflettere, nel mio caso scrivere.

L’ENDURANCE, la mia passione e il mio lavoro, nel mio immaginario lo paragono ad un AQUILONE; questo straordinario oggetto volante inventato 2800 anni fa in Cina, paese dove erano disponibili i materiali più adatti alla sua costruzione come la seta e il bambù, può volare solo in presenza di una condizione, contro vento.

Ebbene l’endurance, come l’aquilone, sembra andare sempre contro corrente, con la prua o il muso rivolto verso le avversità, verso la fatica, verso le difficoltà.

Combattere e vincere il vento, passare una ad una le visite veterinarie (le avversità della vita) per poi

passare il traguardo finale dunque volare.

La Cina, paese di aquiloni da dove è venuto il Covid-19, è un paese di donne e uomini che hanno molto sofferto sin dall’antichità. La lunga e affascinante linea chiamata “via della seta”, ha accomunato il destino del mio paese, l’Italia, con la Cina, “Il Regno di mezzo”, proprio a causa del coronavirus che ha visto i due paesi purtroppo inizialmente protagonisti del contagio.

Endurance è resistenza, è resilienza, è sofferenza, è tolleranza. Ci vuole “endurance” per combattere un male così oscuro e, cancello veterinario dopo l’altro, ci si avvia verso la sofferta vittoria.

L’endurance non ha colori, non ha barriere, non conosce il razzismo, non ha confini né religioni: esso colloca tutti sullo stesso piano, ognuno occuperà in classifica il posto che merita, non si scappa, non ci si può nascondere.

Ripartiamo con calma ed entusiasmo, certi che il mondo che verrà, compreso lo sport, sarà diverso, sarà più accorto, più vero, più sereno.

t’s mid May as I write, Phase 2 post Coronavirus has just begun and we’re slowly starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

We’ve all had a lot of time to think and reflect during this drawn out, new, and unusual experience that is quarantine and as is my case, a lot of time to write.

ENDURANCE is both my passion and my job. In my imagination I compared it to a KITE; an extraordinary flying object invented 2,800 years ago in China, a country where most suitable materials to make them, like silk and bamboo, could be found. A kite can fly on one condition only, that is against the wind. Well, endurance, much like the kite, always seems to be going against the current nose first, facing straight toward adversity, struggles and difficulties. Fighting against and beating the wind, getting through the vet-checks (life’s adversity) to make it to the finish line and fly as a result.

China, the land of kites where Covid-19 started, is a country where ever since ancient times, men and women have been through a lot. The long and fascinating line called the “silk route” has long linked China to the destiny of my country, Italy. In Italy we could call ourselves the “Middle Kingdom” due to the coronavirus that first swept through the two countries before spreading to others.

Endurance is stamina, resilience, sufferance and tolerance. You need “endurance” to fight such a terrible evil and one vet gate after another, you manage to make it toward a well-earned victory.

Endurance has no colors, no barriers, knows no

racism, has no borders nor religions: everything is all on the same level, everyone gets the classification they deserve, there’s no hiding, no escaping.

We’re starting back calmly and enthusiastically, sure that the world to come, sport included, will be different, more careful, more true and more serene.

Sodium chloride: has to be present in the supplement as it carries out an osmotic action, that is, it can retain water in the tissues.

Potassium chloride: is a salt that is just as important because it restores the reserves of potassium, making up for the losses caused by sweating.

Magnesium sulphate: because it provides ionic supplies to intracellular liquids.

Sodium bicarbonate: works as a buffer and helps fight acidosis.

Calcium gluconate: like bicarbonate of calcium, it provides Calcium ions, normally lost through perspiration.

ta per iniziare la stagione calda, che comporta uno dei problemi più sottovalutati del cavallo: la sua disidratazione.

Come per gli esseri umani, anche per il cavallo l’acqua rappresenta una elevata percentuale della massa corporea, circa il 70% e risulta indispensabile all’organismo nelle reazioni chimiche cellulari, per la digestione e la termoregolazione, oltre che nell’eliminazione, attraverso le urine, dei residui metabolici e composti di scarto. È fondamentale controllare che l’acqua sia sempre a disposizione del cavallo: in base alla stabulazione può essere contenuta in vasconi, in secchi o venire erogata tramite gli abbeveratoi, dei quali bisogna assicurarsi frequentemente della pulizia e il corretto funzionamento.

he warm season is about to begin and this leads to one of the most underestimated problems in horses: dehydration.

Just like human beings, water makes up a high percentage of body mass in horses, around 70% and is essential to the organism to maintain chemical reactions in cells, for digestion and thermoregulation, as well as to eliminate metabolic residues and waste compounds via urine.

It’s fundamental to make sure that a horse always has access to water: depending on its housing, it can be kept in deep basins, in buckets or be pumped through water troughs, which need to be cleaned and maintained frequently to ensure they are working correctly.

nche i recipienti devono essere controllati spesso, affinché non contengano acqua troppo calda o inquinata da residui fermentescibili o putrescibili. L’acqua che fuoriesce dai beverini deve essere verificata periodicamente perché, se le tubature sono esposte al sole, questa potrebbe raggiungere l’animale con una temperatura troppo alta, quindi sgradevole.

Un’ inadeguata assunzione d’acqua ha conseguenze molto gravi per la salute del cavallo: la più immediata sarà una ridotta ingestione di cibo e il conseguente calo delle condizioni fisiche e atletiche.

Inoltre, nel caso in cui un soggetto non assuma acqua in adeguata quantità, aumenta il rischio di costipazioni e coliche intestinali.

In condizioni ottimali, l’assunzione di acqua da parte del cavallo è regolare e continua, mentre dopo una sessione di esercizio fisico intenso, a causa della fatica e della conseguente depressione del sensorio, il cavallo non avverte lo stimolo della sete. Per sostenere il cavallo nella reidratazione, è diffuso mettere a disposizione dei rulli o blocchi di sale, che altro non sono che cloruro di sodio, ovvero sale da cucina. Questo non può essere considerato un reidratante salino equilibrato, quindi è sconsigliato utilizzarlo, sebbene sia molto appetibile per il cavallo.

Questo tipo di sale può infatti aumentare il senso di sete, ma non integra appropriatamente la dieta del nostro animale. Se usato da solo, non riesce a trattenere acqua nell’organismo, con una conseguente perdita d’idratazione ed effetti opposti a quelli desiderati. Ciò si ripercuote sull’efficacia e il benessere dei reni, compromettendo la salute del cavallo.

Bisogna quindi affidarsi a prodotti appositamente studiati, che contengano sali e tamponi in quantità bilanciata e opportunamente dosata.

Un reidratante, per essere considerato un valido supporto, deve correggere gli stati di disidratazione conseguente a lavoro, sudorazione e trasporti, oltre che stimolare le funzioni produttive ed energetiche dei cavalli.

he containers need to be checked regularly to make sure that the water isn’t too hot or polluted by residues that are fermenting or decomposing. The water that comes out of the water dispensers has to be checked periodically because if the tubes are exposed to sunlight, the water might reach the animal at a higher temperature and consequently be unpleasant.

An inadequate water intake can cause the horse serious health problems: the most immediate is a reduced food consumption and a consequent decline in physical and athletic condition. In addition, when a horse doesn’t ingest enough water, the risk of constipation and colic increases.

In excellent conditions, the horses’ water intake is regular and continuous, while after an intense exercise session, the horse doesn’t perceive thirst due to fatigue which consequently shuts down the senses.

In order to help the horse re-hydrate, they are often offered blocks or rolls of salt, which are nothing more than sodium chloride, that is, kitchen salt. This can’t be considered a well-balanced saline rehydration so it can’t be recommended even though it’s quite palatable to horses. This kind of salt can in fact increase thirst but it doesn’t properly integrate the animals diet. If used alone, it’s not able to retain water in the organism which leads to a consequent loss of hydration with the opposite effects of those desired.

That can have an impact on the efficiency and the well-being of the kidneys, compromising the horse’s health.

It’s important to choose products that have been studied especially for these purposes, that contain well-balanced and the right amounts of salt and buffers.

In order to be considered a valid support, a rehydrator must correct the states of dehydration caused by work, sweat and transport, as well as stimulate the productive and energetic functions of the horse.

The Adventurists went in search of the next world beating adventure. They didn’t just replicate The Mongol Derby with new scenery, but designed a new race from the ground up, based on the landscape, culture, history and horses of Patagonia and the Gauchos, and have created, what they believe, is the ‘greatest test of horsemanship and survival skill on Earth’.

The Adventurists sono andati alla ricerca di una nuova avventura estrema. Non si sono limitati a replicare Il Mongol Derby con nuovi scenari, ma hanno progettato da zero una nuova gara, basata sul paesaggio, sulla cultura, sulla storia e sui cavalli della Patagonia e dei Gauchos, e hanno creato, ciò che credono sia la “più grande prova di equitazione e capacità di sopravvivenza sulla Terra”.

o far, with still a day of racing to go, the race has delivered on all fronts. Racing through the wild landscapes of Argentina, in places the going has been technical and slow, with pack horses in tow, in others fast and furious, through flatter pampas sections; the scenery stunning throughout.

inora, con ancora un giorno di gara da effettuare, il derby si è svolto su tutti i fronti. Galoppando attraverso i paesaggi selvaggi dell’Argentina, in alcuni punti la cavalcata è stata tecnica e lenta, con cavalli da soma al seguito, in altri punti veloce e selvaggia attraverso sezioni di pampa più piatte; il panorama è stato sempre mozzafiato.

a materia per la sua complessità è ovviamente molto dibattuta.

Durante la lunga quarantena che abbiamo vissuto, spesso andando in ufficio, vedevo dei cavalli nei paddock in realtà non molto contenti, o forse questa la mia interpretazione.

Mi sono chiesto se stessero soffrendo per la mancanza dei loro amici uomini, non amo descriverli come proprietari.

Un giorno mi avvicinai ad uno di essi e notai una lacrima scendere dal suo occhio e mi chiesi: “ma allora piangono anche loro”?

Ebbene per l’etologia, moderna disciplina scientifica che studia l’espressione comportamentale degli animali, la materia è alquanto dibattuta. In caso di forti emozioni gli esseri umani piangono. Gli animali a volte lacrimano ma non si sa con precisione se si tratta di lacrime emotive.

E’ noto il caso degli elefanti, vedi anche il libro “quando gli elefanti piangono” di Jeffrey Masson, nel quale in alcuni passaggi si evince che il grosso mammifero produce lacrime quando in stato di stress. Secondo lo scrittore anche altri animali producono lacrime in caso di stress, come i gorilla, gli scimpanzé, gli orsi e pensate un po’ anche i nostri cavalli.

Completamente di diverso parere la maggioranza di altri scienziati che affermano che piangere è il tratto distintivo che ci rende diversi dagli altri mammiferi che hanno altri “modi” di esprimere il loro stato emotivo.

Gli occhi rappresentano lo specchio dell’anima; l’uomo è abituato a carpire le emozioni guardando gli occhi. Gli occhi ridono e piangono quindi trasmettono uno stato d’animo, delle sensazioni positive o negative.

Di fronte agli animali la questione occhi e lacrime è molto più complessa, anche perché la letteratura non supporta l’argomento con esaustive pubblicazioni e studi scientifici. Ho letto ultimamente un libro che, molto romanticamente, asseriva che scimmie, elefanti e orsi possono piangere dinanzi a forti situazioni di stress come la perdita di un proprio parente.

Ora tornando al cavallo, sono sicuro che esso possa esternare emozioni attraverso l’occhio, l’organo della vista, ma la lacrimazione è spesso legata ad altri fattori fisiologici; la capacità di mantenere il bulbo oculare idratato, la congiuntiva idonea oppure questioni patologiche.

he complex nature of this topic obviously offers much food for thought.

As I was heading to the office throughout the lengthy quarantine period we’ve just been through, I noticed that some of the horses in the paddocks didn’t really seem all that content, or at least that was my impression.

I wondered if they were suffering due to the absence of their human friends, I prefer not to call them owners.

One day I got nearer to one of them and spotted a tear falling from its eye and I asked myself if they could cry too. Well, in ethology, the modern scientific discipline that studies animal behaviour, the matter is somewhat debated. Strong emotions can lead to shedding tears in human beings. Animals might cry sometimes but it’s not precisely known if their tears might be in response to an emotional state. The well-known case of elephants crying is discussed in the book “When Elephants Weep” by Jeffrey Masson, where some passages talk about the large mammal crying when under stress. According to the author, other animals also shed tears when stressed such as gorillas, chimpanzees, bears and what’s more, horses.

The majority of scientists are of a very different opinion and claim that crying is a distinctive trait that differentiates us from other mammals who have other “ways” of expressing their emotional state.

We had a chat with Dr. Gianni Pratelli about this fascinating topic.

The eyes are the window to the soul; humans are used to sensing emotions by looking into each others eyes. When the eyes laugh or cry they give away our state of mind, be it positive or negative.

In animals, the matter of tears and eyes is much more complex, also because there isn’t enough literature in the form of detailed publications and scientific studies to support the argument. I recently read a book that claimed, rather romantically, that monkeys, elephants and bears can cry when faced with very stressful situations like the loss of a relative.

Now, back to horses, I’m sure that they are able to externalise an emotion using their eyes or rather the organ of sight, however lacrimation is often linked to other factors such as keeping the bulb of the eye hydrated, the state of the conjuntiva or pathological issues.

i conoscono diverse patologie responsabili della lacrimazione, congiuntivite, infiammazione, batterica, virale, presenza di corpi estranei, ulcera corneale ecc.

Si può riportare una presenza anatomica di un dotto cioè di un canale sull’osso nasale che inizia dal canto mediale dell’occhio e trova il foro di uscita sulla narice sulla porzione mediale. Se c’è un’infiammazione aumenta la lacrimazione dell’occhio perché il drenaggio viene meno.

Quindi il famoso detto “lacrime di coccodrillo” è solamente un detto?

Etologi e scrittori asseriscono che alcuni animali possono emettere lacrime e quindi mostrare emozioni, forse sarà vero, dal canto mio posso dire con certezza che sul cavallo, proprio non è così.

Anche la forma anatomica, la posizione degli occhi sul muso/faccia può confondere le idee in taluni casi. L’espressività degli occhi cam-

here are many well-known illnesses which are responsible for shedding tears, conjunctivitis, inflammation, bacteria, viruses, the presence of foreign objects, corneal ulcers etc. Anatomically speaking, a duct or canal in the nasal bone starts at the medial canthus of the eye and leads to a hole in middle nasal cavity. When inflammation is present there will be more tearing as drainage is less efficient.

So there’s no truth in the famous phrase “crocodile tears”?

Ethologists and writers argue that some animals can produce tears and thus show emotions, it might be true but I can say with certainty that it’s not exactly so for horses.

The anatomy, the position of the eyes on the face might cause confusion in some cases.

The expression of the eyes changes and with it the interpretation of the emotions expressed.

In horses, the eyes have a complex physiological function, without going into too much de-

Ma è vero che l’occhio del cavallo non è così espressivo?

Non generalizzerei perché ogni cavallo ha il suo occhio, la sua grandezza, il suo taglio, il colore dell’iride.

Poi ovviamente dipende anche da chi si approccia al cavallo. Il cavallo è una preda, ha paura, la sua prima arma è la fuga. È energico e pronto a fuggire quindi in base a come ci poniamo nei suoi confronti, il suo occhio cambia!

Il suo campo visivo a più di 300 gradi, lo aiuta a correre e scappare, atteggiamento diverso rispetto al gatto, al cane a i carnivori in genere.

Quando leggiamo qualche news che racconta di cavalli che sono andati a piangere sulla tomba del loro padrone, cosa significa?

Davvero ha capito della perdita?

Penso proprio di si, anche se è un atteggiamento singolare che varia da soggetto a soggetto in base al tipo di rapporto con il proprio cavallo. Ogni persona ed ogni uomo che si approccia al suo cavallo, lo fa in maniera diversa e con diversi entusiasmi. Poi c’è da dire che l’etologia è molto legata alla fisiologia e all’ambiente dove vive il cavallo. Se riusciamo a mantenere il cavallo in buone condizioni, anche ambientali, esso soffrirà di meno l’eventuale mancanza del proprio amico.

In caso contrario, alcuni cavalli possono mostrare tristezza o meglio discomfort. La tristezza viene dimostrata con gastrite, inappetenza, disagio, svogliatezza, da atteggiamenti comportamentali che fanno pensare che ci sia qualcosa che non va.

Sono state dimostrate ulcere gastriche di fattrici irlandesi al pascolo, quindi in situazioni perfette. Immaginiamo un cavallo che ha vissuto con noi per anni in una scuderia linda e pinta, ebbene lo spostiamo perché venduto o venute meno delle necessità, potremmo riscontrare in lui aggressività o altri atteggiamenti negativi, dunque torniamo al discorso tristezza. Trattiamoli dunque sempre al meglio perché, anche se non scende la lacrima, potrebbero soffrire nel profondo…

But is it true that the eyes of a horse are not really that expressive?

I wouldn’t make generalizations as every horse has its own eye, with its own size, shape and iris color.

Obviously, it also depends on the person who is dealing with the horse.

The horse is prey, it’s fearful, its first defence is flight. It’s energetic and ready to flee, so of course its eyes can change according to how we approach it!

It has a field of vision of more than 300 degrees which helps it to run and escape, a different behaviour compared to cats, dogs and carnivores in general.

When we read about horses who cry at their owner’s grave, what does it mean? Do they really understand the loss?

I think so, even though it’s an unusual behaviour that varies from subject to subject on the basis of the kind of relationship had with the horse.

Each person approaches their horse differently and with varying enthusiasm.

Then it must be said that ethology is strongly linked to physiology and the environment where the horse lives.

If we manage to keep the horse in good conditions, environmental conditions included, it won’t suffer the potential loss of its friend as much.

On the contrary, some horses might show signs of sadness or rather discomfort. Sadness can be shown through gastritis, lack of appetite, unease, listlessness and other behavioural problems that indicate that something is not right.

There have been cases of gastric ulcers in Irish mares out at pasture, so in a perfect situation.

Let’s imagine that a horse has lived with us for years in a stable, all spick and span.

If we move it because it has been sold or we have less need of it, we might notice an increase in aggression or other negative behaviour, which leads us back to the matter of sadness.

The Criollo Breed This breed can trace its origins back to the Spanish Andalusian and Jacas horses, brought from the Iberian peninsula in the XVI century by the colonizers. The criollo horse was created in South America via a process of natural selection over the course of four centuries. They can be found mainly in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay and southern Brazil all places rich in Pampas grass where wild herds have adapted over the years to the adverse conditions regarding both food and climate. Only the most resilient survived and evolved and this left a mark which can be found in some of the most surprising characteristics of these animals: hardiness and resistance. The first examples of the Criollo breed were registered in Brazil in 1932, the year in which the Brazilian Criollo Horse Breeder Association (ABCCC) was founded in the municipality of BagĂŠ, in Rio Grande do Sul.

La razza Crioula Originario dei cavalli spagnoli Andalusi e Jacas, portati dalla penisola iberica nel XVI secolo dai colonizzatori, il cavallo creolo fu forgiato in Sud America in un processo di selezione naturale che durò più di quattro secoli.

Istituite principalmente tra Argentina, Cile, Uruguay, Paraguay e Brasile meridionale, una regione che comprende il bioma di Pampa, le mandrie selvatiche hanno affrontato negli anni condizioni avverse di clima e cibo.

Solo i più resistenti sono sopravvissuti e sviluppati, il che ha impresso alcune delle loro caratteristiche più sorprendenti su questi animali: rusticità e resistenza.

In Brasile, i primi esempi della razza Crioula furono registrati nel 1932, anno in cui fu fondata l’Associazione brasiliana di allevatori di cavalli Criollo (ABCCC), nel comune di Bagé, nel Rio Grande do Sul.

here are currently almost 500 thousand animals registered in all states of the country and most of the specimens can be found in the southern region.

Being docile and intelligent, reduced-size, with consistant bones and muscles, the criollo makes an excellent work horse, perfect for dealing with livestock and covering long distances daily.

The breed is also considered extremely versatile and is used in 14 official sports, from endurance to lunging. The main one is the Freio de Ouro, a competition which evaluates the breed on its poise and morphology. The horses have to perform some movements and some prescribed patterns for which they get points for. Each time, more than one thousand animals gather for the event’s selection process and every year the final is always held during the biggest agricultural show in Latin America, Expointer, in Esteio.

ttualmente ci sono quasi 500 mila animali registrati in tutti gli stati del paese, con la maggior parte degli esemplari ancora concentrata nella regione meridionale. Con un temperamento docile e intelligente, dimensioni ridotte, ossa e muscolatura costanti, il creolo è un cavallo da lavoro per eccellenza, ideale per trattare il bestiame e percorrere lunghe distanze ogni giorno.

La razza è anche considerata estremamente versatile e viene utilizzata in 14 sport ufficiali, che vanno dall’endurance alle prove con le redini. Il principale è il Freio de Ouro, una competizione nella quale viene valutata la razza in base all’equilibrio e alla morfologia. I cavalli devono eseguire dei movimenti e delle figure particolari ricevendo dei punteggi.

L’evento riunisce più di mille animali in prove selettive in ogni ciclo e il suo finale si tiene ogni anno durante la più grande fiera agricola dell’America Latina, Expointer, a Esteio.

Promoted by the National Criollo Horse Breeder Association (ANACC), the first “European Brake” was held in November 2019, at Fieracavalli, in Verona. The event drew participants from Italy, Germany, France and Austria, proof of the increasing popularity of the Criollo horse in Europe.

U

Un’avventura di ben 14 giorni con partenza dall’Argentina, Bariloche, nota località sciistica sulle sponde del lago Nahuel Huapi, in sella si esplora la cordigliera delle Ande per poi raggiungere le zone più remote della valle del rio Puelo e Ventisqueros nella regione dei laghi in Cile, il viaggio si conclude a Puerto Varas. Un trekking epico attraverso le Ande alla scoperta di un territorio grandioso: la Patagonia.

La prima parte del trekking in Argentina lungo la cordigliera il paesaggio è in continuo mutamento, dalle steppe ai remoti passi di montagna, gli spazi sono immensi, per una settimana non si incontrano strade, man mano che si sale la vista è sempre più spettacolare.

La cima massima che si raggiunge è di circa 1.800 metri. I primi esploratori di questa zona vennero a cercare l’oro, altri per stanziare fattorie ed allevamenti, un territorio isolato non semplice per viverci.

A

A 14-day adventure departing from Argentina, Bariloche, a well-known ski resort on the shore of Lake Nahuel Huapi, through the Andes mountain range, to reach the Puelo and Ventisqueros Valley in a remote and beautiful part of Chile’s Lake District. This trip ends on the edge of Llanquihue Lake near Puerto Varas in Chile. An epic trek through the Andes to discover a great territory: Patagonia.

The first part of the trekking is in Argentina is along the beloved cordillera of the Andes, the landscape is constantly changing, from the steppes to the remote mountain passes, the spaces are immense. For a week you do not see any roads, as you climb up the view is increasingly spectacular. The maximum peak reached is 1,800 metres.

Early settlers came to this area to find gold, others to establish estancias, and you get a feeling for how tough their lives must have been.

ristici, alcune valli si posso esplorare solo ed esclusivamente a cavallo, numerosissimi i torrenti e fiumi che si guadano, quando l’acqua è troppo profonda, si ha il supporto di una barca, ed è usanza che i cavalli attraversino il fiume nuotando.

Tra le varie soste in Cile, ricordiamo l’isola Las Bandurrias immersa nella foresta pluviale Valdiviana delle Ande patagoniche: aperta sulle acque del lago Las Rocas, nella valle del Rio Puelo che unisce Cile e Argentina, l’isola ha una superficie di 4 ettari ed è totalmente ricoperta di bosco nativo vergine.

eaving behind the Argentine Criollo horses, the border crossing into Chile is by boat across the vivid blue Lago Puelo. Once we arrive in Chile we meet our new and fresh horses. The landscape here gets greener and the forests become denser.

There are some exciting river crossings where the riders travel by boat and the horses swim.

An area definitely out of the tourist itineraries, some valleys can be explored only and exclusively on horseback, there are numerous streams and rivers to be crossed, and when

the water is too deep you have the support of a boat, and it is customary that horses swim across the river.

Among the various stops in Chile, we remember Las Bandurrias island is immersed in the Valdivian rainforest of the Patagonian Andes.

Open on the waters of lake Las Rocas in the Rio Puelo valley that connects Chile and Argentina, the island has a surface of 4 hectares and it is totally covered with virgin native forest. An ideal place to relax after a day in the saddle, and whilst taking a bath admire the mountain range.

Telephone signal has not yet reached these areas, the only possibility of communicating is via radio. Cooking is done with the fantastic wood stove which is also used to heat the water, electric light is produced by hydraulic turbines or generators.

Organising an expedition on horseback in these remote areas is not easy. Excellent logistical organisation, good packhorses and an expert and competent support team are essential.

The people involved in this great journey are many and this is another of the characteristics that make this trip unique. Along the way you are welcomed into the home of pioneers and local people, including a family of Mapuche Indians.

I grandi protagonisti di questo trekking sono i mitici ‘pilcheros’ ovvero i cavalli da soma che pazientemente e con grande agilità trasportano i nostri bagagli.

Cavalli I vostri compagni di viaggio sono principalmente Criollo. Questa razza varia leggermente da paese a paese ed è diffusa in tutto il sud America, sono apprezzati per l’ottima resistenza, il carattere mansueto, coraggioso e tenace: ottimi per questi tipi di percorsi.

Livello difficoltà & Requisiti Per partecipare a questa vacanza è necessario essere cavalieri esperti con un buon allenamento, il livello di difficoltà è intermedio/ avanzato. L’intera vacanza prevede 11 giorni in sella, con una media di 3/7 ore giornaliere, in alcune occasioni le ore in sella possono essere più lunghe e particolarmente impegnative.

he team that accompanies us are exceptional passionate people of this land, and to assist us there are also the very nice and expert huasos and baqueanos, or better known as gauchos. The great protagonists of this trek are the legendary ‘pilcheros’, the pack horses which patiently and with great agility carry our bags.

Horses and Riding Your travel companions are Criollo. This breed varies slightly from country to country and is widespread throughout South America, they are appreciated for their excellent resistance, their gentle, courageous and tenacious character: excellent for these types of trail rides.

To participate you need to be an expert rider with good training, the level requested is intermediate/advanced. The entire holiday includes 11 days in the saddle, with an average of 3/7 hours per day, on some occasions the hours in the saddle can be longer and particularly demanding. During the trek you will cross rivers and climb mountains, where at times the paths they are very steep.

Dove si dorme La tipologia di alloggi lungo il tragitto sono vari, certo è che per partecipare a questo tipo di viaggio un ottimo spirito di adattamento è un must. Durante le 13 notti sono previsti 3 giorni in tenda, immersi nella natura, per il resto si dorme in hotel, tipiche estancias e case private. Normalmente i bagni e le stanze sono in condivisione.

Hello everyone, I’m Carola Villa. I live in Liguria, in Fontanegli, in the outskirts of Genoa. I’ve just turned 18 and I’m in the third year of agricultural high school.

Now for our usual question. How did your love for endurance begin?

At 13 I started to ride a Bardigiano horse at the horse society that breeds them.

I

started to prepare for the endurance qualifications, the first 5 km! I half-leased this horse from someone. Quite often, sharing things can lead to friction so my parents quickly solved the problem by buying me my own horse “Pa”, now King, for my 14th birthday.

It’s a cross between a Bardigiano and an Arabian, so it’s a mix of docility and resilience.

The name on its documents was Pa, which was originally Pato, like the Brazilian football player. At the time, the strong forward football player was injured, so as a superstitious Italian girl I decided to change its name to Sunny King, which then became just King.

Now he’s ten so he’s in his prime. I’m very fond of him not just because he’s my first horse, but because I’ve also contributed to training him with the help of my intructor.

What was your impression of endurance?

You qualified for the 90km but what was the first 30 km like?

My first 30km was at Origgi in Piozzano and I think I got a good result. I was on my Bardigiano while the majority were on pure Arabians and I felt out of place. Everyone looked at me curiously but with much respect.

It’s hard to say how I felt; getting to the final stretch and passing the vet-check in good conditions was an indescribable joy.

You’re really young but endurance has already taught you a lot. Can you give us an example?

During quarantine, not being able to ride your horse, like not being able to do the sport you love most is hard.

I’ll always remember when I was little and my parents wanted to punish me because I hadn’t done well at school.

Naturally, the first thing they thought about taking away from me was the thing I loved the most, that is my horse.

At the beginning, they both agreed my horse should go but my mum, who I’ll never thank enough, refused.

She thought it was better for me to be with my horse rather than hanging out in the city possibly with bad influences.

The lack of punishment was the real learning curve.

At the start of high school, I went through some tough times but thanks to the support of my family and my love of horses, I managed to get through them.

I owe a special thanks to my family, especially my mother. She’s always helped and supported me in everything I’ve done.

She’s always gone out of her way to take me riding no matter what the weather was like. A special thanks also goes to my dad and my paternal grandfather, who along with my little brother, stayed at home during my first competitions.

I would also like to thank my boyfriend Samuele, who ever since we first met, has always helped me with my horses, at home and in competitions. He doesn’t do endurance but he does ride.

Last but not least, a big thank you goes to the riding centre I attend “Il Mulino del Lupo” which has helped me grow and accepted me as one of their own.

niziai a muovere i primi passi per ottenere le qualifiche endurance, i primi 5 km!

Avevo questo cavallo a mezza fida con un’altra persona. Come spesso accade quando si condividono le cose, possono crearsi degli attriti, dei problemi che prontamente i miei genitori risolsero comprandomi, per i miei 14 anni, “Pa”, oggi King.

E’ un incrocio tra un bardigiano e un arabo, dunque una miscela fatta di docilità e resistenza. Il suo documento riportava il nome di Pa, in realtà si chiamava Pato, come il giocatore brasiliano di calcio. Quei tempi il forte attaccante era spesso infortunato dunque, da buona italiana superstiziosa, decisi di cambiargli nome in Sunny King, quindi più semplicemente King.

Oggi a 10 anni quindi in piene forze. Sono legata molto a lui perchè non solo è stato il mio primo cavallo, ma perché, con l’aiuto dell’istruttore ho contribuito al suo addestramento.

Ma come ti ha colpito l’endurance? Sei qualificata per le 90 km. ma com’è stata la prima 30 km?

La mia prima 30 km. fu dagli Origgi a Piozzano, credo anche con un bel risultato. Ero con il mio bardigiano in mezzo a tanti cavalli Purosangue Arabi e mi sentivo fuori luogo. Tutti mi guardavano con curiosità ma grande rispetto.

L’emozione vissuta è difficile da raccontare; tagliare il traguardo finale, passare la visita veterinaria in buone condizioni, è una gioia indescrivibile.

Sei molto giovane ma l’endurance ti ha già insegnato molto. Un esempio concreto?

Durante il periodo della quarantena non poter montare il tuo cavallo, come non poter fare lo sport che ami, è dura.

Ricorderò per sempre quando ero piccolina ed i miei volevano mettermi in castigo perché andavo male a scuola.

I miei genitori giustamente puntarono sulla cosa a me più cara, il cavallo. Inizialmente erano entrambi d’accordo a toglierlo ma mia mamma, che non ringrazierò mai abbastanza, si oppose.

Per lei era meglio sapermi vicino al mio cavallo piuttosto che a zonzo in città magari con brutte compagnie. Il non castigo è stato il vero insegnamento. All’inizio delle superiori infatti ebbi dei momenti di difficoltà che, grazie al supporto della mia famiglia e della mia passione per i cavalli, sono riuscita a superare.

Approfitta di questa opportunità per ringraziare qualcuno. Rimarrà scritto su carta!

Un ringraziamento speciale lo devo fare alla mia famiglia e soprattutto a mia madre. Mi ha sempre aiutato e sostenuto in quello che facevo. Con qualunque condizione meteo mi ha sempre accompagnato a destra e a manca per montare a cavallo. Un grazie speciale a mio padre e a mio nonno paterno che, insieme al mio fratello più piccolo, erano a casa durante le mie le mie prime gare a fare un super tifo. Ringrazio il mio fidanzato Samuele che da quando è arrivato nella mia vita, mi ha sempre aiutato con i miei cavalli, a casa e in gara. Non pratica endurance ma monta a cavallo. Dulcis in fundo, doveroso è il ringraziamento al centro ippico che frequento, “Il Mulino del Lupo” che mi ha aiutato a crescere ed accolta come una di famiglia.

Un avvincente racconto firmato LARA RIGATO

WHO IS LARA? My love for endurance riding started in 1992 when I discovered this discipline thanks to a much-cherished friend, Sergio Tommasi (former high-level competitor and Chef d’Equipe for the Italian Endurance Team). I’ve been hooked to the sport from then till 2007 when I rode my last competition. I was mainly his groom and crew, helping him out in training his horses on his own farm located in the North of Italy and taking care of them full time. I had the luck to travel around the world with Sergio where we competed in Europe, the USA, Brazil, and Africa (Namibia). I’ve been also a member of the Italian Team at the European Endurance Championship in Morlaix (France) in 1995. In total, I collected more than 3000 km of competitions of which a handful of 100-mile rides. I quit the sport mainly because of the growing disrespect of the welfare of the horses and I didn’t share how it has evolved nowadays but I’m still very fond of horses and still follow the news about the sport while cherishing the old times.

y passion for endurance riding began back in 1992, when a chance encounter with Sergio Tommasi introduced me to this magnificent sport. I’ve always loved horses, especially Arabians.

The classic disciplines like showjumping, indoors inside a manège weren’t for me.

As a child, I was a free spirit; I never missed one episode of Fury and that might be why I always dreamt of galopping along great expanses.

I learnt to ride in Parco di Monza and it was right then that I found out that the combination of horses and nature was the only thing that made sense to me. Sergio and I started to do endurance more or less in the same period.

Carefree, we passed hours and hours trekking in the countryside of Brianza.

He owned some arabian horses that we rode together; I never had one of my own! Sergio noticed my perseverance right away so he asked me if I wanted to help him train the horses for competitions. Needless to say, I accepted the challenge.

Unlike myself, Sergio already had a knowledge of endurance and he was willing to transmit it to me. Back then he had already met the endurance guru Pietro Moneta (still a very active horse rider!) with whom he had started training horses for this discipline. It was a short jump from there. Sergio isn’t the type to waste time, once you’ve understood the game, accepted the rules, you’re off. I followed him first as a groom then as rider.

Sergio had always been sporty, he cycled so he knew how to train in order to get excellent results.

He immediately realized he didn’t have any horses that were adequate for high level competitions (too young) so, via some connections he decided to get some arabian horses “ready to go” from the USA. One wasn’t enough and the shipping container was for 4 so let’s fill it up. Two horses were already “fit-to-go” and two horses were just (one of which couldn’t be led into the container and stayed there). Ramegwa Rhodora and Shalar came from the then not yet world champion Valerie Kanavy, plus a very promising 5 year old half-arabian mare, Hal’s Angel Dream who became the horse of my life.

A wonderful friendship with Valerie was born from this purchase; Sergio and I often travelled to the USA where thanks to her, we took part in some competitions on her horses.

a mia passione per l’endurance nasce nel lontano 1992, quando un incontro casuale con Sergio Tommasi mi fece conoscere questo magnifico sport.

Ho sempre amato i cavalli, in particolare gli arabi.

Le discipline classiche come il salto ostacoli, chiuse tra le pareti di un maneggio, non facevano per me. Da bambina ero uno spirito libero; non perdevo una puntata di Furia Cavallo del West e forse per questo ho sempre sognato di galoppare in grandi distese.

Ho imparato ad andare a cavallo nel Parco di Monza ed è proprio quel periodo che ho capito che il connubio natura-cavallo era l’unica cosa sensata per me Io e Sergio iniziammo a praticare endurance più o meno lo stesso periodo.

Passavamo spensierati ore ed ore a passeggiare nelle campagne della Brianza. Lui possedeva cavalli arabi che montavamo insieme; io non ne ho mai avuto uno proprio mio! Sergio notò subito la mia perseveranza pertanto mi chiese se volevo aiutarlo a preparare i cavalli per le gare. Neanche a dirlo, accettai la sfida.

A differenza mia Sergio aveva già nozioni di endurance ed era pronto a trasmettermele.

A quei tempi aveva conosciuto il guru dell’endurance Pietro Moneta (ancora oggi attivissimo cavaliere!) con il quale aveva cominciato ad allenare i cavalli per questa disciplina.

Da lì il salto fu breve. Sergio non è persona che perde tempo, capito il gioco, accettate le regole, si partì.

Lo seguivo dapprima come assistente poi come amazzone.

Sergio era sempre stato uno sportivo, praticava ciclismo dunque sapeva come allenare per ottenere risultati.

Si rese subito conto di non avere cavalli adeguati per le gare ad alto livello (troppo giovani) pertanto, sempre tramite conoscenze, decise di prendere dei cavalli arabi “già pronti” dagli Stati Uniti.

Uno non bastava, il container era da 4, quindi facemmo il pieno. Due cavalli già “rodati” e due cavalli giovani da tirare su (uno dei quali non ci fu modo di farlo salire nel container e rimase là).

Arrivarono Ramegwa Rhodora e Shalar, dalla allora non ancora campionessa mondiale Valerie Kanavy, più una mezza araba di 5 anni molto promettente, Hal’s Angel Dream che divenne la cavalla della mia vita.

Da questo acquisto nacque una bella amicizia con Valerie; io e Sergio così viaggiammo spesso negli USA dove grazie a lei, partecipammo a qualche gara con i suoi cavalli.

y first experience in the USA was in November ’93: Valerie invited us to her house and from there we left for a 100 mile (160km endurance ride) in South Carolina. Sergio would be riding a young horse that had to finish its first 100 mile TK Firengold “Fire” (later the first endurance horse bought by Sheikh Al Maktoum), I would be on a more experienced horse of a friend of Valerie’s, DTJ Jack of Diamonds “Watson”, who’d already been tested in the 100 miles and had to accompany Sergio’s horse.

Valerie was on Pieraz (future world champion) and was there to win, we were there to finish.

Let me first say, it was my first 160km. WOW, you can’t understand how I felt! We stayed at Valerie’s for a few days, a boundless ranch at the foot of the Apalachian Mountains in Virginia, a horse lovers (and not only) dream and trekked the surrounding area on horseback.

One day I rode Cash (Pieraz), an unforgettable experience! Right in the middle of a narrow path, halfway up a hillside with a high drop on the left, his bridle fell off! What a panic!

Breathless from fear, I asked Valerie what I should do, it was impossible to dismount without rolling down the drop. She calmly told me to leave it to the horse and at the end of the path I could safely get off and fix it.

Sergio avrebbe montato un giovane cavallo che doveva finire la sua prima 100 miglia TK Firengold “Fire” (che in seguito fu il primo cavallo da endurance acquistato dallo sceicco Al Maktoum), io un cavallo più esperto di un’amica di Valerie, DTJ Jack of Diamonds “Watson”, già collaudato nelle 100 miglia che doveva accompagnare il cavallo di Sergio. Valerie era con Pieraz (futuro campione del mondo) ed era lì per vincere, noi per finire. Premetto, per me sarebbe stata la prima 160 km. WOW,

non potete capire come mi sentivo! Passammo qualche giorno a casa di Valerie, una tenuta sconfinata ai piedi delle Apalachian Mountains in Virginia, il sogno di qualsiasi amante dei cavalli e non solo, facendo qualche passeggiata a cavallo nei dintorni. Un giorno montai Cash (Pieraz), come dimenticarlo! Nel bel mezzo di un sentiero stretto a mezza costa con tanto di dirupo sulla sinistra, si sfilò la testiera e rimase appesa al collo tramite le redini! Panico! Con il fiato strozzato dalla paura chiesi a Valerie cosa fare, impossibile smontare senza rotolare giù dal dirupo. Lei mi disse con tutta tranquillità di lasciare fare al cavallo e alla fine del sentiero sarei potuta scendere in sicurezza per sistemarla.

k, lesson number 1: trust your horse. Cash was a calm and wily horse, almost lazy, it was impossible to believe he would become world champion.

A few days later we left for South Carolina. We quickly loaded the horses into her humongous 10m van, with no leg protection, no separators, a few hay-nets, she let us settle in the living space and she and Larry drove. We travelled all night, trying somehow to sleep. In the morning, the first thought was to find a fastfood restaurant for breakfast, not to go to the competition grounds to let the horses out. Ok, Sergio and I were astounded by such “carelessness”, we were always concerned about stressing the horses out as little as possible.

We got to the competition, well, when we opened the van it was jaw-dropping. The horses were tangled up in their leads but they were all calm and quiet.

Valerie told us that she didn’t like females because you can’t travel like that with them, there would definitely have been a few kicks with unpleasant consequences, that’s why she tended to always have geldings and left the mares at home to breed. We prepared a small electric paddock and put the horses in it. (N.B. In the USA there aren’t any pre-fab stables on competition grounds, everyone organizes their own paddock). According to the AERC rules, you can take maximum 24 hours for a 100 miles, but that wasn’t our case. Our horses were fit but yet I remember finishing in the evening taking around 10 hours. It was dark, we had a shower, ate something, went to sleep and the next morning we would see the last ones to get there. Oh my God! But let’s come to the competition. Start at dawn, 34 participants.

Valerie was obviously among the first to leave and Sergio and I went at our own pace to finish our mission.

Wind, cold, rain and… no crew!

That’s right, it’s not unusual for the Americans.

Valerie’s husband, Larry, waited for Valerie at the vet-gates, there were no crew points along the route, also because it was impossible, we were always in the middle of forests, I can’t remember ever crossing a road or seeing tarmac of any kind.

Larry told us what to do at the vet-gate where he would leave something to eat and drink for both us and the horses. Not much, electrolytes weren’t used, some grain in a bucket and go.

k, lesson number 1: fidati del tuo cavallo. Cash era un cavallo pacato e sornione, al limite del pigro, impossibile pensare che potesse diventare campione del mondo. Dopo qualche giorno partimmo alla volta del South Carolina. Caricati i cavalli velocemente nel suo super megagalattico van da 10 m, senza protezioni per le gambe, senza divisori, con qualche rete per il fieno, ci fece accomodare nel living e lei e Larry si sarebbero occupati della guida. Viaggiammo tutta notte, cercando di dormire in qualche modo. Al mattino la prima preoccupazione fu di trovare un fast-food per fare colazione, non di andare sul luogo di gara per far scendere i cavalli. Ok, io e Sergio ci guardavamo sempre più stupiti di tale “leggerezza”, noi sempre in apprensione di far stressare il minimo possibile i cavalli… Arrivammo poi sul luogo di gara, beh, lo spettacolo nell’aprire il van ci lasciò a bocca aperta.

I cavalli si erano intrecciati con le loro stesse lunghine, ma erano tutti sereni e calmi.

Valerie ci disse che non le piacevano le femmine perché con loro non si poteva viaggiare così, sicuramente sarebbe volato qualche calcio con conseguenze infelici, pertanto tendeva ad avere sempre castroni, le femmine a casa a fare le fattrici. Preparammo un piccolo paddock elettrico e sistemammo i cavalli al suo interno (N.B. In USA non esistono box prefabbricati sui luoghi di gara, tutti sono organizzati con i propri paddock). Secondo le regole dell’AERC puoi impiegare al massimo 24 ore per una 100 miglia, non era il nostro caso. Avevamo cavalli preparati, eppure ricordo che noi finimmo verso sera impiegando circa 10 ore. Era buio, ci facemmo una doccia, mangiammo qualcosa, andammo a dormire e l’indomani mattina presto vedemmo arrivare gli ultimi. Oh My God! Ma veniamo alla gara. Partenza all’alba, 34 partecipanti. Ovviamente Valerie si dileguò tra i primi e io e Sergio prendemmo il nostro ritmo per portare a termine la nostra missione. Vento, freddo, pioggia e… niente assistenza!

Esatto, per gli americani non è inusuale. Il marito di Valerie, Larry, avrebbe aspettato Valerie ai cancelli veterinari, niente assistenza sul percorso, anche perché era impossibile, eravamo sempre in mezzo a foreste, non ricordo di aver mai fatto un attraversamento stradale o visto asfalto di qualche tipo.

Larry ci diede istruzioni su cosa fare al vet-gate dove ci avrebbe lasciato qualcosa da mangiare e da bere per noi e qualcosa per i cavalli. Niente di che, non si usavano elettroliti, un po’ di granaglie in un secchio e via.

hanks to the cold we didn’t have to wet the horses much to go in to the vet-check and we didn’t have to un-saddle. All I know is that we had to make do with everything: you get there, measure the heartbeat with your fingers on the jugular vein, go in to the vet-check, make the horse trot, leave, look after the horses, eat something and go.

That’s how it was for the whole competition, absurd when you think about what we’re used to in Europe; but we adapted to it without batting an eye. Rummaging through our food, I came across some fried chicken. I was ravenous. It was cold but I could have eaten a horse. The only thing I’m not sure about is if the chicken was coated in breadcrumbs or in the sand that had been blown around by the strong winds and had got everywhere. I didn’t ask too many questions, it was really good, I was so hungry it didn’t matter but it’s definitely something I’ll never forget. We didn’t know whether to laugh or to cry, we couldn’t wait to get back in the saddle to warm up a bit.

Our horses got through all the vet-checks with excellent parameters. We weren’t doing badly, we were definitely in the top ten. But I was starting to tire. Watson was fantastic, a great teacher, I would have loved to have taken him home with me. He was always constant and with momentum, never a weakness, never a hesitation, thoughtful and trustworthy, a spot-on name. He was one of the best horses I’ve ever ridden. Fire was more energetic but Sergio controlled him and managed him very well. We were ready for the final stretch; we couldn’t believe it when they told us we were among the first 10 in the general classification! It was dark, the cold and the rain were constant. I started to feel a strong pain in my right knee ligaments, maybe because I was riding in a saddle that I wasn’t used to: every gait change was agony! I was crying from the pain and asked Sergio if I could shout. He replied that we were in the middle of nowhere, so I could do… listen carefully…! “Whatever the f@ck you want”. I shouted for the pain, the frustration, the desperation and the hunger…but it obviously didn’t help with the pain. I was suffering more and more when at a certain point we came to a rider who would change gait every 2 meters. In the state I was in, I could have killed her. I started to insult her in Italian as she obviously couldn’t understand because these stop-and-goes were devastating my knee even more. Sergio laughed while encouraging

me as the end was near. However, that doesn’t mean much when you’re in pain, I think that was the longest 10 miles of my life. In the end I had to give up and we slowed down, I couldn’t keep the pace. Some riders reached and overtook us but our destination was near. I gathered all my strength to cross the finish line at a canter together with Sergio, the horses were really well and they too deserved to rest and eat as soon as possible. On arrival, we went to the vet-check and the vets congratulated us on the conditions of the horses, Sergio trotted my Watson, I couldn’t take any more.

The vets asked me if I was ok and I explained about my knee and told them it was my first

100 mile. “Oh, so do you think it’ll also be your last?” “Absolutely not!” and we all burst out laughing. We came 12th and 13th while Valerie, who was really pleased for us, needless to say, won. The next day, after sleeping in the cabin of Valerie’s van, I was as stiff as a board, I ached all over (while Sergio was as fresh as a daisy. I’ll never know how he did it.) but I felt like a child in a sweetshop, pleased with my achievement, happy to see Watson and Fire (and also Cash) in great shape and “fit to continue”.

razie al freddo non c’era bisogno di bagnare tanto i cavalli per entrare in visita e non era obbligatorio togliere la sella.

So solo che ci arrangiammo per tutto: arrivi, prendi il cuore con le dita sulla giugulare, entri in visita, fai trottare il cavallo, esci, accudisci i cavalli, intanto mangi qualcosa e riparti. Così per tutta la gara, c’era dell’assurdo, se pensiamo a come eravamo abituati in Europa, eppure ci adeguammo senza batter ciglio. Nel frugare tra le cose da mangiare per noi, trovai del pollo fritto. Una fame da leoni. Era freddo, ma in quel momento avrei mangiato anche un cavallo.

L’unica cosa a cui non so ancora oggi dare una

risposta era se il pollo era impanato o era semplicemente ricoperto di sabbia per via del forte vento che alzava la sabbia e si infilava dappertutto. Non mi sono posta troppe domande, era buonissimo, con la fame che avevamo era un dettaglio di poco conto, ma sicuramente una cosa che non avremmo mai dimenticato. Non sapevamo se ridere o se piangere, non vedevamo l’ora di rimetterci in sella per scaldarci un po’. I nostri cavalli passarono senza problemi tutti i cancelli veterinari con ottimi parametri. Non era-

vamo messi male in classifica, sicuramente tra i primi dieci. Ma la fatica cominciava a farsi sentire… per me. Watson era fantastico, un gran professore, l’avrei messo in valigia volentieri. Sempre costante e con impulso, mai una défaillance, mai un’esitazione, riflessivo ed affidabile, nome super azzeccato. Bravo come pochi cavalli che io abbia mai montato. Fire era più energico ma Sergio lo controllò e lo gestì al meglio. Eravamo pronti per l’ultimo tratto; increduli ci comunicarono che eravamo tra i primi 10 in classifica generale! Era buio, il freddo e la pioggia non ci lasciavano. Cominciai a sentire un forte dolore ai legamenti del ginocchio destro, forse perché montavo su una sella a cui non ero abituata; Ogni cambio di andatura mi faceva vedere le stelle! Piangevo dal male, e chiesi a Sergio se potevo urlare. Mi rispose senza esitazione che eravamo in mezzo al nulla, dunque avrei potuto fare…sentite bene…! “il ca@@o che vuoi”. Urlai per il dolore, la frustrazione, la disperazione e la fame… ma non servì ad alleviare niente ovviamente. Sempre più sofferente ad un certo punto raggiungemmo un’amazzone che continuava ad andare al passo e ripartire per 2 metri al trotto. L’avrei ammazzata, nelle mie condizioni. Cominciai ad insultarla in italiano che tanto ovviamente non capiva, perché questi stop-and-go mi devastavano ancora di più il ginocchio. Sergio se la rideva mentre comunque mi incoraggiava perché l’arrivo era vicino. Ma non è mai poco quando stai male, credo siano stati i 10 miglia più lunghi della mia vita. Alla fine dovetti cedere e rallentammo, non riuscivo più a tenere il ritmo. Qualche binomio ci raggiunse e ci superò, ma ormai la meta era vicina. Raccolsi tutte le forze che avevo per passare la linea dell’arrivo al canter insieme a Sergio, i cavalli stavano super bene, e anche loro meritavano di riposare e mangiare quanto prima. All’arrivo andammo in visita, i veterinari si complimentarono con noi per le condizioni dei cavalli, Sergio fece trottare anche il mio Watson, io non ce la facevo più. I veterinari mi chiesero se stessi bene, gli spiegai la faccenda del ginocchio e gli dissi che era la mia prima 100 miglia. “Oh, allora pensi che sarà anche l’ultima?” “Assolutamente no!” E scoppiammo tutti a ridere. Arrivammo 12° e 13° mentre Valerie, felicissima per noi, neanche a dirlo, vinse. L’indomani, dopo aver dormito nella cabina del van di Valerie, ero rigida come uno stoccafisso, avevo dolori dappertutto (mentre Sergio era fresco come una rosa. Non ho mai capito come facesse) ma mi sentivo come una bambina nel paese dei balocchi, felice della mia impresa, felice di vedere che Watson e Fire (e anche Cash) erano in gran forma e “fit to continue”.

uello che segue è il racconto di un cavaliere, un amico.

Gianluca Eugeni è un amante vero del cavallo e della vita rurale attorno ad esso. L’andare a cavallo, da soli, dormendo all’aperto, alla ricerca di tempi lontani, di sensazioni uniche.

Gianluca fa l’ingegnere elettronico per vivere e vive a L’Aquila, in Abruzzo.

La storia che ci sta per narrare in prima persona, si svolge all’interno del fantastico Parco Nazionale del gran Sasso e Monti della Laga.

“Compro un po’ di cose da mangiare. Per la maggior parte scatolame. Poi frutta secca, gallette. Ingrasso la mia vecchia sella olimpica, con il suo seggio duro come il marmo, che per tanti trek mi ha accompagnato, questa

volta servirà da basto per portare i due zaini tattici militari recuperati a pochi euro ciascuno al mercatino dell’usato. La sera fieno abbondante.

Mi alzo alle 4 e mezza. Caffè. E’ buio. I cavalli stanno ancora mangiando svogliatamente il fieno della sera prima. Li prendo. Li lego al filare di corda che ho a casa. Metto la sella mentre albeggia dunque carico tutto. Lego con delle cinghie da moto i due zaini alla sella olimpica. Stringo i due sottopancia.

Ci siamo, in sella e si parte. Ore 6 e 30. C’è già luce. Si cammina tutta la mattina per sole vie sterrate. Solo pascoli da attraversare. Taglio lo spago che regge il filo spinato. Passo e lo richiudo cosi come l’ho trovato. Il mio anglo arabo dal gran passo è in forma. Ha già capito che oggi non si torna e forse neanche domani.

he following is the story of a horseman, a friend.

Gianluca Eugeni has a real passion for horses and the rural lifestyle they come with. Riding alone, sleeping outdoors, searching for bygone times and unique experiences.

Gianluca is an electronics engineer who lives in L’Aquila, in Abruzzo. The story takes place in the fantastic Parco Nazionale del gran Sasso e Monti della Laga and we’ll read all about it straight from the man himself.

“I buy something to eat. Mostly tins. Then dried fruit, rice cakes. I oil my old Olympic saddle with its rock hard seat that’s kept me company on many a trek. This time it’ll be used as a saddlepack for two army tactical backpacks

picked up at a second-hand store for a few euros each. A nice feed of hay for the horses in the evening. I get up at 4 o’clock. Have a coffee. It’s dark. The horses are still lazily eating the hay from the evening before. I fetch them.

I tie them to the rope that I’ve got at home. I saddle up at daybreak then load everything. I tie the two backpacks to the Olympic saddle with motorbike straps. Tighten the girths.

Here we go, up in the saddle and we’re off.

It’s half past 6. It’s already light. We walk all morning on dirt roads. We only go through fields. I cut the string that’s holding up some barbed wire. I make my way through it then tie it back up as I found it. My anglo-arab is in good shape. He already knows we’re not going home today and maybe not even tomorrow so he’s going at a good pace.

uindi ha preso un buon passo.

Sa che i trucchetti per fare il pigro e tornare alla stalla oggi non funzionano perché non si torna. La mia saura quarter x avelignese, trotterella a fianco con i suoi onesti borsoni. È la nostra ombra. Lui cammina svelto lei trotterella quasi sempre. In tutto porta circa 18 kg di soma perfettamente bilanciati in modo da non far rigirare la sella. Avena, scatolame, tenda, sacco a pelo.

3 litri d’acqua e il tranch vaquero per la pioggia. Due corde da 10 mt circa per pascolare i miei due cavalli di notte. Spaghi. Coltello. Cappello e bandana.

Il sole del Gran Sasso non perdona.

Zone d’ombra quasi inesistenti. Vivere all’aperto a 1600 metri di quota per alcuni giorni significa innanzitutto proteggersi dalle insolazioni. Ma anche dal freddo notturno. Ci sono sempre possibilità di scendere di notte attorno allo zero. Programmi precisi non ne ho.

So solo che voglio passare per il valico della Portella, oltre i 2000 metri, che non ho mai percorso a cavallo.

Si chiama così perché era l’ingresso che serviva a portare merci e materiali da L’Aquila a Teramo, o da Assergi a Pietracamela.

Viaggio con i miei due cavali senza altre compagnie umane. In silenzio.

H

e’s well aware that any lazy tactics to head back to the stable aren’t going to work because there’s no going back today. My avelignese-quarter mare trots at our side with her bags. She’s like our shadow. In total she carries around 18kg perfectly balanced so that the saddle doesn’t slip. Oats, tins, tent and sleeping bag.

3 litres of water and waterproofs for the rain.

Two ropes of approximately 10m so my two horses can graze at night. String. Knife. Hat and bandana. The sun on the Gran Sasso takes no prisoners.

There are no shady areas. Living outdoors for a few days at 1600m above sea level means first of all protecting yourself from heat stroke but also from the cold nights. Temperatures could always drop to around zero at night. I don’t make plans.

All I know is that I want to go through Portella passage at over 2,000m as I’ve never done it before on horseback.

It gets its name from when it was used as an

entry point to transport goods and materials from L’Aquila to Teramo or from Assergi to Pietracamela. I travel alone with only my two horses for company. In silence.

Now and again you can here me talking to the horses. Sometimes you come across someone and you can have a chat with if you feel like it. Otherwise you just say ‘Good morning’ and carry on. It’s a long time in the saddle. The first day I want to get to Assergi. It’s not exactly far but it’s not near either. I stop for a while near Collebrincioni to have something to eat and make the most of the nice long grass for the horses to graze. Then I head over to my friend Daniele and have a quick beer at his restaurant. He’s got things to do so I say goodbye and set off again. I normally sleep outside but I thought I could stay the night at the manége at Assergi this time so I could feed my horses some hay. I call the owner to let him know.

It’s a calm and quiet night. The horses feed at a round manger full of good quality hay and I sleep in the stables. It’s even got a battery charger to hand and a bathroom to wash in.

O

gni tanto si sente solo la mia voce che parla ai cavalli.

Ogni tanto si incontra qualcuno con cui scambiare qualche chiacchiera se ne ha voglia.

Altrimenti buongiorno e via. Le ore da fare in sella sono tante. Per il primo giorno voglio arrivare ad Assergi. Non è lontano ma neanche vicino. Mi fermo un po’ verso Collebrincioni per mangiare qualcosa e approfitto per far pascolare i cavalli una bella erba alta e buona. Poi passo dal mio amico Daniele che mi offre una birra veloce nel suo ristorante. Ha da fare quindi lo saluto e riparto. In genere dormo fuori.

Però mi viene in mente che per quella sera voglio fermarmi al maneggio di Assergi per dare un po’ di fieno ai cavalli. Chiamo il proprietario e lo avviso. Nottata tranquilla e serena. Cavalli al tondino con buono e abbondante fieno e io tranquillo nelle stalle. Persino il caricabatterie a disposizione ed anche un bagno per lavarmi. Un lusso mai visto!

La sera pago il proprietario. Gli dico che la mattina parto presto e non so se ci vediamo.

E infatti alle 6 parto dal paese.

never before seen luxury! I pay the owner in the evening. I let him know that I’ll be off early the next morning and I don’t know if I’ll see him and as a matter of fact I leave the village at 6 o’clock. I send the owner a message to thank him and wish him a nice day.

I decide to go up Valle Fredda, a well-known alpine ski route which you would normally reach from the ski lifts. It’s called ‘Valle Fredda’ or ‘Cold Valley’ as it’s in the shade. The ascent is about 1,000 meters. I do a good part of it in the saddle. I’m wearing a fleece. It’s cold.

The lower part of the valley is full of debris left from dry trees.

Most of them are conifers that have been torn down by avalanches. The path is steep. The lower part where I set off from gets further away and quickly becomes small. The horse walks for 30 seconds. Then it stops and catches its breath and then starts again all by itself.

No cues. I let it do what it has to do without bothering it. It’s got me on its back so it’s only fair. Then the flora stops and the path gets even steeper but finally the sun comes out.

ando un WA al proprietario per ringraziarlo e augurargli buona giornata.

Decido di salire per Valle Fredda, noto percorso di sci alpinismo che si fa normalmente anche partendo dagli impianti. Si chiama così perché è in ombra. Il dislivello da fare è di circa 1000 metri. Faccio un buon tratto in sella. Ho il pile.

Fa freddo. La parte bassa della valle è uno sfasciume di alberi secchi.

Per lo più conifere tirate giù dalle valanghe.

Il sentiero è ripido. La parte bassa dove sono partito si allontana e diventa velocemente piccola. Il cavallo cammina per 30 secondi. Poi si ferma a prendere un po’ di fiato.

E poi riparte da solo. Senza comandi. Io lo lascio fare senza disturbarlo. Ha me sulla groppa ed è giusto così. Poi la vegetazione finisce e il sentiero diventa ancora più ripido e stretto ma finalmente esce un po’ di sole. Scendo.

farmi venire il fiatone, scelta apprezzata dai cavalli. In un’ora e mezza ho fatto tutto il dislivello ed inizio a scendere verso la Fossa di Paganica. I cavalli si sono riposati e in lieve discesa rimonto in sella verso un orrido albergo abbandonato. Un progetto iniziato e mai finito.

Una struttura appena iniziata ma ormai in rovina. Attraverso la fossa e molte mosche cavalline ci assalgono. Repellente a go go.

Raggiungo di nuovo l’asfalto presso i ruderi di S. Egidio. Attraverso la strada per andare di nuovo sui pascoli verso Racollo. Passano pochissime macchine. Un pick-up si ferma. Vedo scendere un uomo baffuto vestito come un Gaucho argentino e con dei baffoni. Lui non è alla guida. Guida un altro signore che mi sorride. Io guardo il gaucho e mi domando se sono finito in un tunnel spazio temporale che mi ha portato nella pampas argentina. Che ci fa un gaucho sulla piana di Campo Imperatore? Ma lui mi sorride e mi dice subito sorridendo “Finalmente !!!”.

get off. I take my fleece off and walk slowly so that I don’t get out of breath. The horses really appreciate this choice.

In an hour and a half, I’ve made it up all of the ascent and I start to head down toward Fossa di Paganica. The horses are rested and I get back in the saddle to head slightly downhill toward a horrible abandoned hotel. A project that was begun but never finished. The structure itself had only just been started but is now derelict. I go through Fossa and swarms of horse flies attack us. I break the fly repellent out. I reach asphalt again near the ruins of S. Egidio. I cross the road to get to the pastures again toward Racollo. Not many cars go by. A pick-up stops. Out gets a man with a big moustache dressed like an Argentinian Gaucho. He’s not the driver. The other man driving smiles at me. I look at the gaucho and wonder if I’ve ended up in a wormhole that’s taken me to the pampas in Argentina. What’s a gaucho doing in Campo Imperatore? But he smiles and with

a smile says “Finally!!!”. I say “Good Morning”, relieved to hear he speaks Italian. I smile back and probably look a little quizzical. Laughing, he explains that “finally someone who’s riding a horse rather than loading and unloading horses from a lorry”. I don’t know who he is but I like what he’s saying. He’s already got me all figured out. Admittedly, I’m not very fond of lorries. He and his friend are camping at Fonte Vetica and there are about 10 of them riding. They invite me to join them. They’re about 15km away at the bottom of the Campo Imperatore plain. I accept and promise to reach them in the late afternoon when it’s cooler as it’s warming up now and I prefer to make the most of the shade of the pine trees of the Racollo shelter to let the horses stay in the shade during the hottest hours. Shade on the Campo Imperatore plain is hard to come by. I also feel like having a nice pecorino cheese sandwich at Castel del Monte because it’s almost lunchtime for me, even if it’s only 10 o’clock in the morning.

o dico “Buongiorno” sollevato dal suo parlare italiano.

Sorrido a mia volta con lo sguardo forse interrogativo. Lui spiega ridendo “finalmente qualcuno che va a cavallo invece di caricare e scaricare i cavalli dal camion”.

Non so chi sia. Ma le sue parole mi fanno piacere. Mi ha già inquadrato. In effetti non amo molto i camion. Lui e il suo amico mi dicono che sono accampati a Fonte Vetica e sono circa 10 cavalieri. Mi invitano a raggiungerli.

Sono a circa 15 km da lì. In fondo alla piana di Campo imperatore. Io accetto e prometto di raggiungerli nel tardo pomeriggio quando rinfresca perché adesso si va verso il caldo. E preferisco approfittare dell’ombra dei pini del rifugio Racollo per far stare i cavalli all’ombra durante le ore più calde. E l’ombra sulla piana di Campo Imperatore è merce molto rara.

E poi ho voglia pure io di un bel panino col pecorino di Castel del Monte perche’ per me è praticamente ora di pranzo, anche se sono solo le 10 del mattino.

Ho già alle spalle circa 4 ore di sella e circa 1000 metri di dislivello, mi aspetta solo una passeggiatina di 10 km in pianura, in mezzo ai meravigliosi prati del nostro piccolo Tibet.

Giungo al rifugio Racollo con lago e fontanile annessi per un po’ di riposo. Scendo e allento le selle di un punto. Non sono molto sudati nonostante sia già caldo. Li lego tranquilli all’ombra della piccola pineta e vado a parlare con il gestore del rifugio.

Mentre mi prepara un bel panino con tutta roba locale porto i cavalli al fontanile a bere.

L’acqua è gelata dunque piccoli sorsi.

Davanti al rifugio ci sono due asini che gironzolano e vengono con insistenza a cercare il pane. Li accarezzo ma il pane non lo do. Altrimenti diventano sempre più invadenti. E’ il momento dello spuntino di avena per i miei cavalli. Verso le 15.30 vado a salutare il gestore del rifugio. Stringo le selle di un punto e riparto. In un’ora e mezza circa sono al Fonte Vetica alla ricerca del gaucho e del suo amico.

Sono curioso di parlare con loro e, anche se in altre circostanze sarei andato a dormire in un posto più riservato, decido di sostare lì anche se è pieno di camper e di gente che bivacca portandosi dietro tutta la casa e le comodità possibili. Individuo i trailer dunque mi dirigo verso di loro. Il gaucho ha un bel puledro di circa tre anni con le zampe anteriori legate tra di esse. Le pastoie le ha fatte lui con due corde. Lego i miei cavalli a due corde lunghe perché’ possano pascolare e tolgo i borsoni con

tutta la mia roba poggiandoli a terra.

Allento le selle di un punto e dopo mezz’ora dissello i cavalli. Il gaucho si chiama Nicola ed è un maniscalco che ha vissuto per molti anni in Argentina sposando la loro tradizione equestre. Il suo amico è un buttero che alleva cavalli da generazioni ed ha una azienda agricola. Parliamo per ore di cavalli e hanno tanto da insegnare. Hanno due selle argentine fatte in casa. Le ha fatte Nicola. Per lui e per il suo amico buttero. Iniziano a sellare i cavalli. Strato su strato. Non avevo mai visto nulla del genere. L’arcione della sella è costituito da 4 tubi di plastica dell’acqua neri totalmente fatti in casa e da tante vecchie coperte. Solo un pezzo di cuoio che porta le staffe è opera di un sellaio.

Infine una pelle di montone sopra. Ci mettono mezz’ora per sellare. Mentre finiscono di sellare stringendo forte il sottopancia, gli dico che vado con loro. E ci scappa anche un giro al famoso Canyon dello Scoppaturo, dove fu girata la famosa scena del film “Lo chiamavano Trinità” con Terence Hill e Bud Spencer.

La sera arriva presto, monto la tenda con l’apertura rivolta verso i miei cavalli che pascolano legati alle corde di circa 10 metri. Le stelle della notte sono grandiose a 1600 metri di quota.

Ogni tanto gli do una voce per far sentire che sono lì. E loro mi rispondono con un nitrito quasi silenzioso. Alle 3 inizia a fare freddo.

Chiudo la tenda. Alle 5 suona la sveglia.

Meglio partire presto. La strada del giorno dopo non la conosco quasi per niente. Mai fatta a piedi o a cavallo. L’ho solo vista sulla mappa e c’è un bosco ripido da attraversare.

ve already been in the saddle for about 4 hours with around 1,000m in ascent, I’ve just got a short walk of about 10km on level ground, through the wonderful fields of our little Tibet.

I get to the Racollo shelter with its lake and fountain to have a rest. I get off and loosen the girths one hole. The horses haven’t sweated much despite the heat. I tie them up peacefully in the shade of a little pine forest and go to speak to the shelter’s owner.

As he makes me a nice sandwich out of entirely local produce, I take the horses to the fountain to drink. The water’s freezing so it’s little sips only. There are two donkeys wandering in front of the shelter who insistently try to get some bread off me. I stroke them but don’t give them any bread. Otherwise they would be even more invasive. It’s time to give my horses their snack of oats. At around half past three I say goodbye to the owner of the shelter. I tighten the saddle and leave.

In an hour and a half I’m in Fonte Vetica on the look out for the gaucho and his friends.

I’m curious to speak to them and even though I’d normally go and sleep somewhere a bit more private, I decide to stay there despite the camper vans and people camping with everything but the kitchen sink.

I spotted their trailers and headed over to them. The gaucho has a nice colt around 3 years old with its back legs tied up. He’d made the tethers himself with two ropes. I tether my horses with two long ropes so that they can graze, take off the bags that hold all my stuff and put them on the ground.

I loosen the saddles by one hole and after half an hour unsaddle the horses. The gau-

cho’s name is Nicola and he’s a blacksmith who lived in Argentina for years and picked up their equestrian traditions. His friend is a horse wrangler who’s bred horses for generations and has an agricultural holding. We talk about horses for hours and there’s so much to learn from them. They both have two handmade Argentinian saddles. Nicola made them.

One for him and one for his wrangling friend.

They start to saddle up the horses. Layer by layer. I’ve never seen anything like it. The arch of the saddle is made of 4 black plastic water tubes, completely homemade and lots of old blankets. Only the piece of leather that holds the stirrups is the work of a saddler. On the top of the lot goes a sheepskin. It takes them half an hour to saddle up. As they finish up by tightly fastening the girth, I tell them I’ll come with them. We even manage a ride around the famous Canyon dello Scoppaturo where the scenes of the renowned film They Call Me Trinity with Terence Hill and Bud Spencer was filmed. It’s soon evening, I set up my tent with the door facing toward my horses who are grazing tied to 10m long ropes. The stars are amazing at 1,600 meters of altitude. My tent being open means I can see the stars and my horses. Now and again I make a noise to let them know that I’m there and they reply with an almost silent neigh. It starts to get cold at 3. I close the tent. At 5 the alarm rings. Better leave early. I hardly know the route for the day after. Never taken it on foot or on horseback.

I’ve only seen it on the map and know there’s a steep wood to cross.
