BRAZIL OVERVIEW

For two weeks in March, Team CSPS traveled to Brazil and Argentina to catch up with Emerging Leaders from the Global Sports Mentoring Program. Spending time with Cassia Damiani (class of 2012), Daniela Castro (2013) and Paula Korsakas (2014) in Sao Paulo, and Luz Amuchastegui (2013) in Rosario, the CSPS staff was able to dive into the women’s unique contexts and learn about the specific ways they are empowering girls and women in their communities. Here’s a summary of some of our activity during the trip’s first leg in Sao Paulo and Brasilia.

DAY 1: SPORT AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT IN ITAQUERA Upon landing in Brazil, the team gathered our luggage and equipment and boarded a bus headed to Itaquera, one of the eastern districts of Sao Paulo, to meet with Fran Silva and his group of volunteers, staff, and athletes at the Kaue Sports and Culture Club (AECK). After a professional career in futsal and mixed martial arts, Fran started the AECK to provide sports and learning opportunities to community members in his low-income, high-crime neighborhood. Shortly after starting this journey, he had the idea to paint a 200m running track on the street adjacent to the club. The track revolutionized the socialization and health of Fran’s community and has become a symbol of hope and empowerment for residents.

This track is now home to one of the largest running events in the area, boasting more than 4,000 participants and spectators. AECK has also produced two national champions, Rafael Santeramo and Tabatha Dias, who still live and train in Itaquera.

FRAN SILVA, founder of Kaue Sports and Culture Club After leaving AECK, the team went to a Sesc location nearby, where we met with past and present Estrelas do Futebol (“female soccer stars”) players, many of whom traveled to Knoxville in April 2014 as Sports Visitors, to engage in classroom and field activities.

During these sessions, many of the girls conveyed their passion to continue learning and growing, both personally and academically, after the exchange. They also shared the challenges facing them in their neighborhoods and within their families, from financial issues that could prevent them from staying in school and getting into university to cultural expectations of their roles as women. Despite these challenges, the girls committed themselves to the pursuit of a better life.

DAY 4: WOMEN RECLAIM THE PARK ON INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY In celebration of International Women’s Day, Paula Korsakas, a former basketball coach and current sports manager at the University of Sao Paulo, organized a pick-up basketball event intended to reclaim space for female players who are otherwise bullied off the city’s public courts.

Team CSPS spent three hours playing basketball and discussing gender equality issues with the very diverse and strong group of athletic women, some of whom shared that they hadn’t played pick-up basketball in years due to concerns they’d be sidelined by male players.

claimed our place on these courts so that other women who walk by and see us can play, too.

DAY 5: “WOMEN FOR SPORT WOMEN” HISTORIC MEETING On Day Five, the team traveled to the capital city of Brasilia for a landmark meeting between the Ministry of Sport and REMS, the Sport and Social Change Network in Brazil. The meeting marked the first time in the Brazil’s history that government and civil society came together to discuss women’s sports.

At this meeting, Cassia Damiani, GSMP 2012 alum and director of strategic planning within the Ministry of Sport, gave an impassioned speech to the Minister, government officials, and other members of civil society, urging them to get behind her Title IX action plan for Brazil. She spoke of the role sport plays in the lives of women and girls and the economic impact this can have on a society. She spoke of her own experiences on the GSMP and the ways she came to value mentorship, action planning, and critical equality for both sexes.

After rousing applause from the audience, the Minister of Sport George Hilton, guaranteed that he would support Cassia’s Title IX proposal and would pass this piece of legislation on to the National Congress, in hopes of their approval by July 2015. If enacted, this would mark nationwide transformation in the way sport is operationalized in Brazil, offering equal access and opportunity for women and girls seeking federally funded sports programs.

DAY 6: CORPORATE WOMEN UNITE TO DISCUSS PROFESSIONAL MENTORSHIP On Day 6, Daniela Castro, executive director of Athletes for Brazil, mobilized more than 40 businesswomen to attend a two-hour seminar on the importance of professional development and mentoring. The meeting was held at the Google Brazil headquarters in downtown Sao Paulo, as part of the Mulheres do Brasil (“women of Brazil”) network. The women at the meeting represented a variety of industries and influential companies, including Google, P&G, Audi, Nike, MasterCard, and Ted Talks.

The workshop included presentations from CSPS directors Hillyer and Huffman, GSMP Alum Daniela Castro, and all four GSMP mentors who traveled to South America — Julie Eddleman of Google, and John Lisko, Joan Coraggio and Gwen Conley of Saatchi LA.

DAY 7: EMBRACE THE CHALLENGE – CRITICAL DISCUSSION WITH ATHLETES & SOCIAL EDUCATORS On the morning of Day 7, Paula organized a workshop with private and public educators in the city to discuss the ways sport can be used to empower women and promote youth development. During the session, participants identified the most pressing issues facing youth in their community, including psychological and structural violence against women and girls and socioeconomic inequality, resulting in high rates of drug use.

Participants brainstormed the ways sport can be used to address these issues and created a list of best practices when working with underserved populations.

In the afternoon, Team CSPS, in coordination with the Saatchi LA mentors, led discussions with some of Brazil’s best and brightest athletes. Organized

by EWGTS alumna, Renata Lopes, quality of life director at SESI, the session included a discussion on the importance of women’s sports, and how female athletes can market their achievements to promote their sport and also social change. Those in attendance included current and future Paralympians and Olympians — “Magic” Paula Silva (basketball), Aline Silva (wrestling), Veronica Hipolito (track & field), Soraia Alvarenga (table tennis), Vanessa Pereira (futsal) and Evelyn Oliveira (bocce).

become dentists and lawyers, but sports were an important part of their

DAY 8: WOMEN OF THE WORLD UNITE FINDING INSPIRATION IN ACTION The Closing Summit marked a welcomed reunion and opportunity to convene with all of the women who had participated in the week’s events.

The audience was a reflection of the energy, passion and commitment of the three Brazilian Emerging Leaders, who work so hard to reclaim parks, create corporate mentorship opportunities and pass landmark Title IX legislation. Representing the three key sectors of society, from federal government to business to education, Cassia, Daniela, and Paula are the ultimate dream team.

What became evident on our visit to Brazil is that these women are radically changing the way other women experience life; not just on the court or on the field, but in the classroom, in the boardroom and in the mirror. These women have mobilized incredible networks of women who are hungry for new opportunities to learn, grow and lead. We look forward to the ways these empowered women will use sport to change the future of Brazil for the next generation.

The team would also like to give special thanks to Julie Eddleman, for her thought-provoking presentation on personal branding, and to U.S. General Consul Dennis Hankins for his inspiring remarks. And lastly, a heartfelt thanks to the Museu de Futebol for hosting this incredible event!

ARGENTINA OVERVIEW

For the final five days of our South America trip, the CSPS team visited with Global Sports Mentoring Program alumna Luz Amuchastegui (class of 2013) in her hometown of Rosario, Argentina. Luz and her staff at El Desafío Foundation work to transform their neighborhood, which is home to two of the oldest and most dangerous shantytowns in the city, La Lata and Villa Moreno, through innovate sports and educational workshops that keep kids engaged and on a path toward success. Here’s a summary of our activities during the five days we spent in Rosario.

DAY 1: FIELD AND CLASSROOM SESSIONS After recuperating from the overnight flight from Sao Paulo, Luz gathered the team from our hotel and brought us to the El Desafio headquarters, a medium-sized warehouse facility that has been repainted and arranged to host more than 160 kids with multiple programs happening concurrently.

Many of the program participants, volunteers and “young leaders” — program graduates who have been given opportunities to work part-time with the organization, and who also serve as role models for younger participants — were there to welcome us. We spent the day breaking the ice and building trust with them through some of the classic games in Drs. Hillyer’s and Huffman’s arsenal, and talking about what El Desafio has done for their lives.

During these sessions, we met a trio of best friends — Andy, Damian and Marco — who have been together at El Desafio for more than a year, and who have all taken on roles as soccer coaches, providing mentorship and leadership to another generation of El Desafio participants. We also met Agustina, a 17-year-old who is coaching the Mini Gigantes (“little giants”) soccer team of 12-13 year-olds, becoming one of very few young women coaching boys soccer in the city.

people have lost a lot of hope. Then, in the middle of all of this, there’s El Desafio, which is this kind of a shining jewel. I’m so impressed by the fact they are absolutely committed to providing these kids the best experience

DAY 2: MINI-LIBRARY AND VOLUNTEER TRAINING AT URQUIZA PARK On Saturday morning, the CSPS team and mentors left for Urquiza Park to provide support for El Desafio staff as they installed their sixth Mini-Library, a major project undertaken to provide communal books and reading space for Rosario’s residents.

After helping mix cement and ensuring the Mini-Library was solidly in place, Drs. Hillyer and Huffman jumped into the volunteer training, led

by El Desafio executive director Mario Raimondi. The exercises, focused on team building and responsible living, concluded with a dance session, where Dr. Huffman taught a personalized dance version of Rocky Top.

DAY 4: FIRST DAY OF AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMMING On Monday, El Desafio welcomed back kids for the first day of after-school programming. The CSPS team got to be there to witness the energy and passion of the staff, volunteers and participants during the soccer, dance, field hockey and art classes.

Despite the heat, the kids in the outdoor classes were excited to get to a small, turf field four blocks from the warehouse, where all practices for team sports are held. First up were the Mini Gigantes, then the older boys soccer teams, and finally the girls field hockey players. A former field hockey goalie herself, Luz even jumped in to share some expertise.

DAY 5: SECOND DAY OF AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMMING Before leaving for Buenos Aires, the CSPS team and mentors spent our final hours in Rosario at El Desafio for its second-day of programming. In order for kids to take multiple classes, the organization spreads its programming out throughout the week so different workshops are available every day.

On this occasion, the team experienced El Desafio’s inaugural skateboarding class, where 10 kids stepped on skateboards for the first time and practiced with instructors Bautista and Andy at a nearby basketball court, long abandoned to disuse and recently reclaimed by the organization. Skateboarding was followed by a music class, with the sound of beating drums and laughter filling El Desafio’s warehouse.

As the afternoon drew to a close, it was time to say our goodbyes to the volunteers, participants and staff at El Desafio — never a painless task when befriending people with such strong commitment and love for doing their part to create new, improved Rosario.

One of the more touching final moments of the trip happened when Agustina, who received a U.S. women’s national soccer team jersey earlier in the week from Dr. Huffman for her role coaching boys soccer, wrote out and shared a short speech about how meaningful the presence of the CSPS team and GSMP mentors was for her.

Agustina began attending El Desafio in early 2014 after Luz spoke at her school. Last year, she signed up for and finished cooking and mentoring classes. And, although she has played soccer since the age of 5, she never considered being a coach until she got the push from Luz and Mario. At 17 years old, Agustina is committed to securing a bright future for herself, and, at the same time, understands she is a role model for other girls in her community. At the very core, that is what El Desafio is slowly building: a generation of kids like Agustina, Andy, Damian and Marco who will transform La Lata and Villa Moreno, and bring back hope to many who lost it a long time ago.

Their extensive professional experience in the world of marketing was well-received in Brazil, and their belief in the mission of creating strong female leaders is unyielding --- most evident in their deep relationship with Luz, who they passionately worked alongside in Rosario, getting their hands dirty during Mini-Library installation and engaging with dozens of kids over the course of four days. PARTICIPANT DEMOGRAPHICS Local girls 13-18 years old, from lower-income districts of the Itaquera neighborhood in Sao Paulo. Girls were selected by U.S. Consulate to participate in the Estrelas do Futebol program, which provides a year of classes in soccer, English, and leadership skills, with the goal of fostering diversity and creating future community leaders.

ACTUAL OUTCOMES The Estrelas do Futebol girls were engaged and excited throughout the entirety of the day’s programming. The 10-15 who visited the United States in April 2014 were especially eager to see Drs. Hillyer and Huffman again and discuss the individual progress they’ve made since their return to Brazil.

During a classroom activity intended to illustrate how the girls perceive the world differently since their exchange, Paula Bellisario commented:

Collectively, the girls agreed that over the past year they’ve gained an improved sense of self, greater respectfulness and compassion toward others, and increased self-confidence.

For the field portion of the visit, Drs. Hillyer and Huffman shared multiple activities with the girls, including Entourage, Eye Tag, and Fox in the Hen House. Each of these activities focused on developing teamwork and leadership skills, as well as challenging the girls to make the right decisions even in a game situation. Joyce Gomes, the facilitator from the U.S. Consulate, said:

” We haven’t met with the girls after the program yet, however the positive

impact the activities had is very clear. The girls are still posting pictures and commenting on Facebook. From a program perspective, for us it’s very important that the girls experience activities conducted by Americans as, not only do girls and coaches learn new games, but they also get a chance to be in contact with American culture and English language. It definitely motivates the girls outside of the field to keep studying, as well.

ACTUAL OUTCOMES In the morning, a group from UT and the U.S. Consulate arrived to secure one of the 10 basketball courts at Ibirapuera Park for the day’s events.

Over the course of four hours, more than 15 women arrived to play pick-up basketball, as well as a handful of male players who participated earlier in the day. The event, scheduled to coincide with International Women’s Day, was organized primarily to claim a space for women on the city’s public basketball courts. Paula Korsakas, the GSMP 2014 alumna who facilitated the event, said:

”Usually if the women come to play on Sunday morning, the park is filled with men. Sometimes they will let them play and other times they will

ignore them. If they get on the courts, some men will be more aggressive toward them and make sexist remarks to get them off the courts. Many husbands will also come and play and leave their wives at home to take

”

care of the kids, even if they also want to play.

The basketball portion of the event was successful, with many women saying it was the first time they played pick-up basketball in public in years.

Two male bystanders, Wilians (husband of Ellen Valias, one of the event organizers on Facebook) and Valdemar (a basketball player and associate of Paula), also thought the event was a good example for both sexes of how public spaces can be shared.

During post-game discussion, Drs. Hillyer and Huffman worked through the greater implications of the event for the group. The conversation centered on how women can partner with each other to ensure similar opportunities for empowerment and inclusion continue, de-escalate aggressive situations between male and female players, and deconstruct gender stereotypes.

Two attendees to the event were local basketball players and coaches with Brazil basketball legend “Magic” Paula Silva’s organization, Instituto

Passe de Mágica (The Magic Pass Institute). One of those coaches, Priscila Lourenco, said:

”This event was amazing and I’m very glad we could claim a place on the

space we’re entitled to here in our city. I’ve conquered a lot through sport

and the skills it has given me, such as autonomy and self-recognition. The obstacles that face me in life aren’t so difficult now. I think I’m already used to them. In sports, if a strategy doesn’t work, you look for alternative

ACTUAL OUTCOMES The meeting was the first time in Brazil’s history representatives from government, business and the civil sector gathered to discuss women’s sports policy. During the meeting Minister of Sport George Hilton committed to signing Cassia Damiani’s legislative proposal for equal federal funding for women’s sports into law after it passes through the National Congress in summer 2015.

Paula Korsakas, who facilitated the REMS portion of the meeting, was glad to see organizations from Northeast Brazil, which she is hoping to mobilize for her action plan, involved in the meeting. She said:

”From the REMS perspective, we achieved success in this event, considering that the three new organizations from the Northeast present at the

meeting have already applied to become members of the network. So, I have no doubt that this dialogue channel was created and the challenge

”

now is to keep it active and effective.

The NGOs from the Northeast that participated for the first time were Rejupe (Youth Network for the Right for Safe and Inclusive Sport), Plan Brasil and Esporte Mais Institute.

Unfortunately, the plan of establishing practical deadlines for progress was not met, in large part due to a transition within the Ministry of Sport, which prevented REMs from discussing a specific political agenda for women’s sports in Brazil. However, the Minister’s stated intention to pass the new law by August gives Paula and the network a time frame with which to work. The next big step is to mobilize the civil sector to maintain consistent dialogue with government officials in the coming months.

DAY 6 (MARCH 10): BUSINESSWOMEN WORKSHOP FACILITATORS: Daniela Castro, GSMP 2013 NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: 40

ACTUAL OUTCOMES The event was hosted in the Google Brazil building in downtown Sao Paulo. Daniela Castro opened the meeting by discussing the Global Sports Mentoring Program. She recounted her experience and the importance and relevance of such mentorship networks in Brazil.

Drs. Hillyer and Huffman spoke more in depth about the program and the roles of the U.S. Department of State, espnW and CSPS in carrying it through. Dr. Huffman discussed methods of empowering women and girls through sport, sharing on the topic of Title IX, the famous Battle of the Sexes tennis match, and her own experience as a former NCAA Division 1 basketball player. Dr. Hillyer shared data from pre- and post- surveys of

GSMP participants, indicating increased rates of confidence, self-belief and knowledge of empowerment methods after completing the program.

Many of the women at the workshop shared their own stories of empowerment through sports, as both youth and adults. Three women inquired about participation in the GSMP for themselves or associates. Afterward, Daniela Castro said:

” I feel the women are definitely more sensibilized. As they mentioned

during the workshop, it was a very different and new approach to sport, with the mention of US legislation and the mentoring program. Now, I have to talk more with each of them to get more feedback. And I will propose to create a separate network to follow along with their different actions.

”

DAY 7 (MARCH 11): SOCIAL EDUCATOR’S WORKSHOP FACILITATORS: Paula Korsakas, GSMP 2014 NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: 25

ACTUAL OUTCOMES The event was well-attended and featured extensive, open forum discussion on the different inequalities the educators deal with in their communities.

Although many work in different contexts, from urban Sao Paulo to favelas and other low-income neighborhoods on the outskirts of the city, they Mentor Exchange: S-ECAGD-13-CA-163(DT)

agreed that issues of psychological violence are the most prevalent against women and, more generally, youth in their communities.

Participants listed a number of issues that affect their students: physical, sexual, psychological and structural violence; lack of opportunities; lack of values; lack of role models; depression; prejudice; drugs and alcohol.

Attendees also shared a number of issues that affect girls, specifically, and which often prevent them from continuing in sports, such as cultural expectations of gender (e.g. accusations of lesbianism, pressure to focus on domestic roles), concerns over body image, and aggressive behavior from men in their lives.

However, at the end of the event, attendees also shared the reasons why they love and believe in sport to address all of their concerns. Particular focus was placed on goal-setting, physical, mental and emotional health, and teamwork. After the event, facilitator Paula Korsakas, said:

”[All of us here] believe sports can be used as a tool to help change many of these problems we’ve listed and I’m happy so many people could be

here so we can move forward in this together.

Paula has not had a formal evaluation of the workshop, but feels it helped to raise awareness on gender inequalities, in general, and more profoundly in the sports context.

Four participants from the workshop attended the Closing Summit later in the week.

Brazilian international futsal player and three-time Futsal World Player of the Year winner Veronica Pereira was also present, as well as trainers and coaches for many of the athletes, and all three GSMP alumnae.

ACTUAL OUTCOMES The workshop was conducted in much the same way as the morning session with the social educators, led this time by Drs. Hillyer and Huffman and facilitated by Renata Lopes, quality of life director for SESI Sports Club in Sao Paulo.

The athletes, however, focused more directly on problems they’ve encountered throughout their careers in the area of equality.

While many have already achieved national and international success, Aline Silva, a future Olympian and national wrestling champion, shared that until recently she was expected to cook for her family after returning home from practice. She also spoke of instances where she has been criticized and discriminated against for her athletic physique. Veronica Hipolito and Evelyn Oliveira, future Paralympians, also talked of the ways in which Paralympic athletes are intentionally and unintentionally discriminated against, and are often treated as inferior or needing to be protected.

John Lisko, Joann Coraggio and Gwen Conley from Saatchi LA presented on the importance of self-branding and the value of sponsorships. They discussed at length Toyota’s recent campaign with U.S. Paralympian Amy Purdy and showed two videos from the filmmaking process, encouraging attendees to work closely with existing sponsors and contacts in the private sector.

Renata Lopes said the event was especially important for networking, as veteran or retired athletes like Magic Paula can serve as mentors to younger attendees like Silva and Hipolito. Renata also maintains contact with all of the athletes who attended, as she plans to launch a Facebook page and website for the network in the coming months.

ACTUAL OUTCOMES The Closing Summit was an opportunity for everyone throughout the week to gather again and reflect on the different workshops, as well as plan for the future. All of the different mentors spoke on short panels, as well as U.S. General Consul Dennis Hankins, who vowed his support for their various efforts and thanked everyone for their involvement in the different workshops and for supporting gender equality initiatives in the city.

Julie Eddleman, a three-time GSMP mentor and global client partner at Google, also presented on the importance of marketing oneself and developing a plan of personal progress and transformation, which resonated with many of the attendees.

Finally, all GSMP and EWGTS alumnae shared their action plans for the next few months, involving developing their networks and supporting Cassia Damiani’s “Brazilian Title IX” legislative proposal.

Of all the standout moments from the activities, Luz felt the most successful in breaking the ice and creating trust was “The Story of the Blue Elephant,” a telephone-like game where the entire group stood in a circle and members took turns adding elements to a story. The Blue Elephant story led into another similar storytelling activity that centered on El Desafio and its impactfulness in the community. Luz Amuchastegui said:

Students and volunteers were asked to draw their names in a way that expressed their personalities. The size of their names and the ways it was designed was intended to share their character and values. The participants then shared their name drawings and the stories behind their creation with the rest of the group.

After initial introductions, everyone was asked to exchange their drawings with the person to their right. This person was then asked to share something positive about the person whose name they had received.

These activities were designed to encourage expression, team building and trust among the group. They were also important for talking about the importance of understanding who each person is, the strengths they each bring to the larger group, and how much easier the job of creating lasting community change is when we encourage one another. Luz Amuchastegui said:

them were exposed there so clearly that it made absolute sense for them.

Drs. Hillyer and Huffman also participated in volunteer training, led by El Desafio Co-Founder Mario Raimondi. This training included lessons on inclusion and relational responsibility. Luz Amuchastegui said:

ACTUAL OUTCOMES El Desafio involved more than 120 students in its different after-school programs on the first day of classes. The programs included soccer, field hockey, dancing and hairdressing.

CSPS staff dedicated time to shooting video footage of the different programs, interviewing participants and engaging with attendees in a range of activities, even leading a group dance with the 7-10 year olds during their dance class. Luz Amuchastegui said the following:

”This day was chaotic in terms of people coming in and out, and many last-

minute decisions and problem solving. But, the fact that the CSPS team and mentors were there provided us with extra support and energy. For the kids that came to El Desafio for the first time, having the photographers

Luz on what CSPS and mentor presence achieved with the different demographics of El Desafio:

”For our young leaders it was about turning on that inner light, empowering them and showing them that every dream is achievable if you take the

right steps. For volunteers, it was about committing, connecting with our participants and understanding the vision of El Desafio in terms of how we see social change and excellence. For our staff, it provided them with new tools, showed them that good energy and fun make the job easier, and also it made them want to improve their English to continue to develop themselves professionally. For Mario and I, it was the boost of energy that we needed to reassure ourselves that we are following the right track and to remind us that we are not alone in this fight!
