Ziya Brittingham Reflects on the Journeys of the Graduating Class Ziya brittingham
COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER
G
ood morning everyone! First, I’d like to thank all of the guests, students, faculty, and board members for attending this ceremony. I’d also like to thank my classmates for allowing me to speak on their behalf this morning as we celebrate the years of hard work, sweat, and tears that led up to these moments. As some of you may know, I’ve been writing this speech for four years. Okay, I’m using the term “writing” loosely. Truthfully, I’ve been writing down random “speech-worthy” quotes that have popped into my head since 9th grade, each one sounding like they belong in a cheesy Hallmark card. I’ve changed a lot since then, and I’d like to think I’m a more eloquent person now, so to spare you all and myself the embarrassment, I’ve scrapped those entirely. Now that I’ve shared this with you, many of you may be thinking that I’m a tad overzealous for using my time in the Upper School to draft a speech that easily could’ve stayed in my Notes app, lost among to-do lists and login information. And maybe you’re right. 14-year-old me may have been a little over-the-top in writing this speech so early on, but to be honest and vulnerable with you, I simply wanted to be remembered. I wanted to have such an impact on my peers that at least one person remembered me and the encounters we’ve had. I think that’s something we would all like. We want to make our mark, big or small, so that our legacy can be remembered for years to come. It’s just a matter of figuring out how you’d like to be remembered. As we all get ready to enter the upcoming stages of our lives, I’m sure we all have felt some amount of anxiety, excitement, or nervousness of what’s next. Personally I felt fear. Many superficial and irrational ones like the fear that the IRS will come after me if I file my taxes wrong, or the idea that a verdict may rest in my hands in the event that I am summoned for jury duty, or what to cook for dinner when I run out of chicken tenders and french fries. However, these pale in comparison to the fear of losing my friends and the wonderful connections I’ve made throughout my time at PDS. There are countless events that have defined my Upper School experience, and the thought of leaving them behind scares me the
most. The late-night conversations, the laughter-filled Gatherings, and the shared triumphs and challenges that have shaped our high school experience. Of course, it is only natural to worry that these memories may fade with time. I know I’m not alone when I say that regardless of the trials and tribulations I’ve faced in the Upper School, I wouldn’t even consider giving them up if it meant that the time shared with those I care about here went with them. After reflecting on some of my fondest memories with my classmates, I’ve come to the realization that my memories will keep the connections I’ve made alive. I know that everyone sitting on this stage will be immortalized through the long study sessions, grade-wide projects, Dunkin’ and Starbucks runs, lost DoorDash orders, hectic bakesales, exciting pep rallies, blindfolded chess matches, student exhibits in the art gallery, and all of the little moments that motivate us to keep going. I can make thousands of wishes to go back to these moments in my life but my memories guarantee that I’ll
remember nearly everything about PDS. Though I may soon forget the sound of middle schoolers running to the playground during class, the lingering smell of garlic and tomato sauce wafting through the lobby after an advisory or club has a pizza party, or the sun setting over the trees before my late-night extracurriculars, I find reassurance in the idea that the time we have shared together is not solely reliant on the recollection of details. They are embedded in our hearts and minds, forever imprinted as a part of who we are. The bonds we have formed will endure, and the impact of our time together will be felt in the friendships and connections we carry into the future. So, as we move forward, rather than fear that these moments may escape us, let us cherish these memories and hold them close, knowing that they have shaped us and will continue to influence our lives long after we have bid farewell to this chapter. To the faculty members, thank you for your unwavering dedication, guidance, and expertise. You have not only imparted knowledge but also

instilled in us a passion for learning, a curiosity for the unknown, and the confidence to chase our dreams. Your tireless efforts inside and outside the classroom have helped shape us into the individuals we are today. To our parents and family members, words cannot adequately express the depth of our appreciation for your unwavering support, love, and sacrifices. Your constant encouragement and belief in our abilities have been the cornerstone of our success. Your presence at countless events, cheering us on from the sidelines, has provided the motivation and reassurance we needed to persevere. Thank you for being our pillars of strength and for shaping us into the resilient individuals we have become. We are forever grateful for your presence in our lives. And, finally, I’d like to address my fellow members of the Class of 2023. Thank you for all that you’ve done to make PDS a warm and welcoming environment. Your presence has brought vibrancy, diversity, and a spirit of unity to our campus. Through your involvement in clubs, sports teams, and other organizations, you have instilled in our school a sense of passion and enthusiasm that is truly inspiring. Your willingness to take risks, explore new interests, and lead by example has created a culture of empowerment and personal growth. Beyond your individual achievements, it is the collective impact of your kindness, empathy, and compassion that truly sets you apart. You have shown us the power of lifting each other up, of standing together in times of adversity, and of embracing the strength that comes from unity. Your acts of service and dedication to giving back have made a profound difference in the lives of those around you and have enriched our school community as a whole. As you move forward into the next chapter of your lives, remember the lessons you have learned here. Carry with you the values of integrity, resilience, and the pursuit of excellence that have been ingrained in you during your time at our school. Remember the friendships and connections you have forged, and hold onto the memories that have shaped you. Each of you will have longlasting effects on this community, and for that, PDS can never thank you enough. Congratulations, Class of 2023! May our futures be filled with success, happiness, and endless possibilities. Thank you. r
