Two grand reasons to celebrat e

75th anniversary!

The weekend of July 6 and 7 was a time of joyous celebrations for Brother Warren and Sister Bernadette Broz, who are residents of Liberty Hill, Texas, and members of SPJST Lodge 160, San Angelo. On Saturday, July 6, the couple was honored at Santa Rosa de Lima Catholic Church in Andice on the occasion of their 75th wedding anniversary. The Reverend Larry Stehling is pictured here, presenting the happy couple with commendations from the Diocese of Austin and His Holiness Pope Francis commemorating their landmark celebration. The following day, more than 100 family members and friends attended a celebration to honor Warren and Bernadette at their Liberty Hill ranch. In conjunction with that celebration, SPJST President/CEO Brian Vanicek was on hand to present Mr. Broz with a certificate for having achieved the “Grand Age of 96,” entitling him to all SPJST member benefits with no further dues or assessments required, the presentation drawing roaring applause from those gathered. Pictured here with Brian, Warren, and Bernadette, from left, are their children and spouses: Bobby (Robert) and Phyllis Broz; Loretta Broz Reid and Gary Reid; and Linda and Roger Broz. A fourth offspring, Randy, passed away in 2006; Randy’s wife Lynn was also in attendance but not present at the time of photo. An article on the wonderful life and times of Warren and Bernadette Broz will be forthcoming in the Vestnik

WGrandparents’ Day is Sunday, Sept. 8

e celebrate a special occasion on Sunday, September 8 that is close to our hearts—Grandparents’ Day. This day is a wonderful opportunity to honor the grandparents and elder members of our community and lodges, whose wisdom, love, and dedication have shaped our lives. Grandparents are the keepers of our heritage and traditions, passing down stories, values, and customs that connect us to our roots and give us a sense of belonging. Their influence goes beyond family, reaching into our lodges and communities, where their guidance and care help strengthen our bonds. Let’s take a moment to recognize and celebrate these incredible individuals who enrich our lives with their presence and continue to inspire us with their kindness, resilience, and support. This Grandparents’ Day, let’s show them our gratitude and appreciation for the invaluable role they play in preserving our heritage and nurturing the next generation.

Yay, Lodges and Youth Clubs!

We want to take a moment to acknowledge and appreciate our lodges, youth clubs, and members who are actively participating in the Caring Challenges. Your efforts are making a significant difference across the state, and it’s inspiring to see the positive impact you’re having on your communities. Whether it’s collecting school supplies, volunteering, or lending a helping hand, your contributions reflect the true spirit of SPJST. Together, we are building a stronger,

more connected community, and for that, we are deeply grateful.

Looking Ahead to 2025 Caring Challenges

We are also excited to announce that we are already working on the 2025 Caring Challenges! We greatly appreciate those who took the time to submit their ideas on the idea board at the Convention. Your input is invaluable in helping us plan meaningful activities that resonate with our members and benefit our communities. If you have any ideas or suggestions for a 2025 Caring Challenge or quarterly theme, we would love to hear from you! Please send your ideas to info@spjst.org.

Marak church invites all to annual homecoming picnic on Sept. 8

Dear Readers,

For our lodge to continue to be a part of Westfest, we are having to replace our old, existing food booth with a new food trailer. We have repaired our booth multiple times over the years and now realize we will have to replace it, due to its poor condition. We will also use the new food trailer to prepare and serve our togo plate orders at our other fundraising event, our annual lodge picnic.

A new food trailer will cost Lodge 6 more than $30,000. A recent acceptable bid was given at around $33,000. The Johnnie Krizan Estate is giving $10,000 toward the total cost, along with using some of our lodge funds. I know my late brother and past District Three Director, Johnnie, would have continued to fully support this effort and our presence at Westfest.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood is kindly asking for monetary donations from lodges in District Three and across the state and the SPJST Executive Committee to be used toward the cost of the trailer. All donors will be recognized on a sign on the newly constructed trailer.

Since our presence at Westfest is a very large part of our fraternal involve-

S.S. Cyril and Methodius Church in Marak, Texas, will host its annual homecoming picnic on Sunday, September 8, 2024. The church is located seven miles northwest of Cameron on FM 2269.

Mass begins at 10:15 a.m. Food serving starts at 11 a.m. Plates include home-fried chicken/sausage with all the trimmings and dessert. Meal tickets are $15 each. Drive-thru line will be available for plates-to-go with continuous serving while food lasts.

Games begin at 11:30 a.m., and a prize drawing will be held. Praha Brothers will entertain from 12 noon to 3 p.m. at Vrazel Polka Band Memorial Pavilion. Live auction begins at 2:30 p.m. inside the air-conditioned hall. All ages are invited and welcomethe day includes entertainment for the entire family so come out for a day of fun!

It’s Your Life

Calling All Young People . . . Have You Met Roth Yet?

Note: The opinions expressed in this article are those of Delisle Doherty and do not necessarily reflect the views of any other employee, director, or officer of SPJST.

If you’re young or even in your midlife years and have a job, it’s time to meet Roth. Roth can be your best friend today and all the way until you retire. He’ll teach you the importance of saving, help you save money, and grow your income. He’ll ensure you have extra income during retirement and protect your money from the government. To use a term we all hear today; forget about Tom Brady— Roth is the G.O.A.T.

Who is Roth? Roth is an IRA. A Roth IRA offers a powerful savings opportunity that allows you to grow your retirement fund without worrying about taxes when you’re on a fixed income. The income from a Roth IRA is entirely taxfree if you meet certain conditions. For example, if you’ve held the account for at least five years and are over 59 1/2, you can withdraw your funds tax-free. The maximum contribution is $7,000 per year (or 100 percent of your income if you earn less), and $8,000 per year if you’re over 50. There are a few other requirements, but these are two of the main features.

When my children were young, I started Roth IRAs for them. We made the initial deposit and set up a plan for them to contribute just $50 a month. This taught them the importance of saving early. Now in their 30s, they’ve increased their contributions as they’ve become more established. This early habit of saving means they’ll have a sizable, tax-free amount waiting for them when they retire.

Make Roth your kids’ best friend. Even if you’re in middle age, it’s not too late to start a Roth. You still have time. Our Roth IRAs are guaranteed to grow and cannot lose money. While the stock market can make you rich—or poor— your Roth IRA will always give you a solid foundation for retirement. Invest in a Roth IRA for stability, and take your chances with the rest in the stock market.

“Preparation for old age should begin not later than one’s teens. A life which is empty of purpose until 65 will not suddenly become filled on retirement.”

—Dwight L. Moody

My door is always open, figuratively, and literally.

Stay blessed, Delisle L. Doherty

Member Engagement news from state fraternal director frank horak

State Fraternal Director posts September updates

As we move from August into September, we all long for the arrival of the first cold front from the north. As a kid, I remember the times my parents packed up the pickup truck, hooking up the travel trailer and heading to the deer lease. I remember the drive from Kingsville to Freer and witnessing the first cool front rolling through and experiencing the warm air steadily becoming colder. Well, maybe cooler . . . after all, we are in Texas, and 75 feels a lot better than 95 degrees! Many of you will relate that the only air conditioner in a vehicle was rolling down the windows. The arrival of the crisp air not only was refreshing but also rejuvenated our spirits. I know many of us will be looking for that first cold front in September and hoping it will hang around a while.

As our youth and teachers set out for another school year, may they be blessed with wisdom, courage, and joy in all their accomplishments. Help our youth cultivate their passions and help them discover their potential through engaging school sports, academic, and vocational programs that will challenge their minds, foster their passions, and promote personal growth. Youth and teachers – have a terrific year!

All attendees recited the Pledge of Allegiance and the SPJST pledge, followed by a moment of silence for departed members. Flag Bearer Irene Peterson reported 10 members, five youth, and two guests in attendance.

The minutes of the last meeting were read by Secretary Jeanette Beseda. Treasurer’s report was also provided by Sister Jeanette, and both were approved. Sister Jeanette provided SPJST Home

Office/FAC news. The Caring Challenge for July is “Supplying Success,” which is collecting items to fill backpacks. When completed, they will be presented to West ISD. The August challenge, “Book Bonanza” is underway and when completed, it will involve a donation of children books to local day care facilities.

Sister Jeanette read correspondence from the Home Office regarding status changes with four insurance policies. Also reported were get well cards sent to Sister Barbara Hykel and Sister Dorothy Kucera. Hall rentals were reviewed, and the volunteers working those events were confirmed.

Under old business, Brother Don provided a tentative financial report on the successful lodge picnic held on July 21 with the final report pending. Brother Don spoke about the generous donations gifted from the Home Office/others toward the purchase of a food trailer for use at Westfest and other lodge activities. These donations were presented to lodge officers by District Three Director John Engelke at the start of the picnic auction. Discussion was held that all donations received will be recognized on/at the food booth as the lodge truly appreciates all assistance in this effort.

New business—Sister Jeanette reported that in coordination with the Home Office, a letter will be published in the upcoming Vestnik regarding the request for assistance to purchase the food trailer. Lodge 6 has been recog-

Starting on Friday evening, August 30 at 4:30 p.m., we have a potato peeling party, where we prep about 500 pounds of potatoes to be cooked over the weekend. Amazingly, in about two hours of time, we could be done. Then we can enjoy nice fellowship, a meal, and a beverage of choice.

Discussion was held about the three shifts and coverage needed for the booth sales on Saturday, August 31 and Sunday, September 1. Most shifts have adequate coverage, but if you can help, please contact any lodge officer.

August birthday recognition went to Sister Kim Seith. Happy birthday!

Name drawn for the progressive door prize was Edward Lenart, and he was not present. Attendance door prizes were awarded to Irene Peterson, Barbara Hykel, and James Nemec.

Lodge 30, Taiton shares August meeting minutes

The SPJST Lodge 30, Taiton meeting was called to order by President Yvonne Marcaurele at 9:55 a.m. on Sunday, August 4, 2024, at St. Johns Parish Hall in New Taiton, Texas. Grady Lange led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance, and a silent prayer was said for all sick and departed members.

Roll was called with 10 adults and 10 youth members present. Special guests were Sadie Janssen and Avery Marcaurele (young siblings of our youth club members). Minutes from the June meeting were read by Secretary Megan Riha and subsequently approved unanimously. (It was noted that the July meeting was derailed by Hurricane Beryl hitting our town.)

Treasurer Lisa Bubela gave her report, and it was noted that the $340 in scholarships to Grant Bubela, Bethany Baker, and Emily Kresta were delivered to them acknowledging our appreciation for their activities throughout their youth club membership. Karen Kaspar asked about additional fundraising opportunities - discussion ensued about possibilities for fundraising at the Christmas Games Party held at the Taiton Community Center, as we only have the cake walk at the Taiton Fall Festival currently on the calendar for 2024. Yvonne Marcaurele will check into qualifications to secure matching funds from the Home Office for our youth club.

brought school supplies. These will be delivered to Hutchins Elementary School in El Campo where our member Marjorie Treumer teaches. For September’s challenge, members are asked to bring books and sweet treats for the staff of the elementary school.

Youth Leader Lisa Bubela congratulated all the youth who participated in the State Youth Showcase. We had many winners! Special congratulations to Lodge 30 group talent placing third and to Vanessa Riha who won SPJST’s Junior Miss SPJST competition. A lively and constructive discussion ensued on the Youth Showcase events and issues that arose with ideas to help with making next year even better - most notably for the lunchtime issue of slow turnaround on food order from the food truck - allowing the youth an option to use their food ticket to purchase from the Mayborn snack bar. After the brainstorming amongst the members, Lisa asked the membership to send emails containing their suggestions to allow for collation and presentation. Hopefully, there will be a district youth counselor meeting in the near future where this feedback can be presented and discussed with FAC/youth department leadership.

Under old business, delegates Yvonne and Lisa, gave a brief report on June’s convention. Most notable is the change to the district meetings/social events. Each active lodge will have representation and input on planning upcoming district-sponsored meetings/ socials. Once the by-law changes are published, a more in-depth presentation will be held for the membership.

A report on the SPJST Camp was given by the youth. Yvonne shared that Rob Clift announced his resignation as executive camp director. He is moving

to Oregon in August. Camp chaperones

Stephanie Janssen, Kenna Harwell, Lisa Bubela, and Yvonne Marcaurele were thanked for all their work during camp. The kids had fun and came home very tired.

Upcoming events were discussed. They are lodge outing on August 25 at the Lost Lagoon. Youth Leader Lisa Bubela will coordinate with the families for head count and text everyone the details for that day.

Our annual Grandparents Day celebration on September 8 at St Johns Church in New Taiton was discussed. On that same day is the St. Philip 75th anniversary celebration - it was discussed and voted unanimously to hold our September meeting on Saturday evening, September 7 to allow for those members who want to attend that celebration to make both obligations.

Upcoming district social is on September 22 at the Victoria Czech Heritage Festival being held at the Victoria Community Center. District officers are meeting August 8 to finalize details. Please watch the Vestnik for information.

The fundraising opportunity for our youth club is the Taiton Fall Festival - it will be on October 6 at Taiton Community Center. Members are asked to bring cakes, cookies, and pies to support the cake walk to make it another successful day!

Birthdays celebrated were Gerard Marcaurele on July 8 (the day the hurricane hit!), Simone Riha on September 11, Hesston Harwell on August 23, and Kirby Lange on August 30.

Lodge 84, Dallas discusses Czech heritage celebration and holiday plans

Dear Readers,

Members of Lodge 84, Dallas met for their monthly meeting on Sunday, August 18, 2024. The meeting was brought to order by President Vicki Sims at 2:45 p.m. Sergeant-at-Arms Charles Nemec led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a moment of silence for the troops serving our country and for anyone needing special intentions. Secretary Cherri Petr then read the minutes from last month’s meeting; all were approved by everyone present.

Sister Lynda Novak reported that plans were still on track for the Czech Heritage Celebration at Sokol Dallas on Sunday, October 13. She mentioned that there would be several Beseda circles dancing a variety of versions and that the University of North Texas Band Ensemble will be performing. She also mentioned that pulled pork, klobases, and barbecue sandwiches plus chicken nuggets will be available along with kolaches and strudel - all for purchase if you get hungry.

New business discussed was the Christmas party to be held on Sunday, December 1 and perhaps a fun day with bingo and dominoes, etc. to help introduce and encourage prospective members to join SPJST in 2025. Keep watching for more details as these activities come together!

President Vicki then gave the treasurer’s report in the absence of Jim Liska.

Before adjourning the meeting, President Vicki thanked everyone for attending the meeting, hoped everyone enjoyed their Potbelly boxed lunches, thanked everyone for their generous school supply donations, and reminded everyone that in the season of charitable contributing, to make a list of suggested organizations we could support as a lodge and bring to the next meeting for further discussion.

She then wished everyone safe travels and to stay hydrated during this hot Texas summer!

Next Meeting—September 15

The next meeting will be at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 15 at the home of Charles and Kathy Nemec, 10707 Webster Terrace, Dallas, Texas 75229. Call 214-351-4214 for directions.

Lodge 88, Houston prepares for the biggest Czechfest yet in 2024

Lodge 88, Houston’s biggest event of the year is coming: Czechfest 2024 is on Saturday, October 12 featuring Chris Rybak.

You may have noticed that Czechfest has tripled in size over the last three years (actual math, not hyperbole). We just completed the first Czechfest planning meeting of the year, and we intend to keep that trend going . . . but we will need your help.

Below is a list of what we plan to add (or bring back) to Czechfest in 2024:

• A pumpkin patch including pumpkin painting.

• Puppet Shows - Did you know that puppetry has long been a big part of Czech culture and were used to help preserve it during Austrian, Nazi, and Russian occupation?

• A Grand March! With the number of people we are planning for, this could be a whopper. We are working to identify potential leads but let us know if you would like to be considered.

Tips for a memorable Labor Day weekend

Labor Day weekend is widely considered the unofficial swan song of summer. Though millions of children return to school prior to Labor Day weekend, the final holiday of summer still marks an ending to the season of relaxation and a return to the hustle and bustle of life when the temperatures dip and schedules fill up.

Perhaps because Labor Day has become synonymous with the end of summer, many people look to make the weekend preceding the holiday as fun as possible. People with such intentions can keep these tips in mind as they seek to plan a memorable Labor Day weekend this year.

• Wake up early if you intend to travel. Labor Day weekend should be memorable for all the right reasons and traffic is not one of them. A recent survey from the vacation planning experts at The Vacationer found that roughly 148 million

people planned to travel over Labor Day weekend in 2023, which makes the three-day period a particularly busy time to be on the road or in the air. If you intend to fly this Labor Day weekend, try to book an early morning flight to reduce the risk of delays. If you’re driving, hitting the road before sunrise, particularly if you’re traveling a long distance, can help you avoid traffic jams.

• Plan the weekend. It can be tempting to fly by the seat of your pants come Labor Day weekend, but it’s still best to book excursions and even dinner reservations in advance. The popularity of Labor Day weekend and its status as the unofficial end of summer compels many people to get up and go over the threeday period, so theme parks, water parks, restaurants, and other attractions may be all booked in advance. Purchase tickets and make reservations months in advance to ensure you aren’t left with little to do and/or nothing to eat come Labor Day weekend.

• Create a backup plan. Ideally the weather will cooperate and Labor Day

• Go with a summer theme. Even if the kids are already back in school and your summer family vacation is a distant memory, that’s all the more reason to revive the spirit of summer one last time. If hosting at home, a Hawaiian luau theme complete with a pig roast or a final summer pool party is a great way to send summer off before welcoming fall into the fold. Encourage guests to don summer attire and revive your summer playlist to get guests in the mood. If you’re traveling for the weekend, pick a sunny, sandy destination so you can squeeze every last drop out of summer. (MS)

8 healthy snack ideas kids will love

Parents know that growing children need a lot of food. According to pediatric dietitian Hanna Leikin, MS, RD, CSP, LD, kids need a higher calorie demand per body weight compared to adults to support bone development, muscle growth and other bodily functions. Perhaps that’s why it seems like a stocked refrigerator or pantry can become barren in just a few days when kids are in the house.

Children are frequently looking for snacks between meals, which means that parents need to have a variety of snack foods at the ready for their youngsters. But it can be a struggle to find healthy snacks children will eat. With that in mind, parents can consider these eight healthy alternatives to less nutritional fare like chips or sugary treats.

1. Fruit on a stick: It seems any food enjoyed on a stick is fun to eat. This is certainly an item for older kids, as parents won’t want to worry about younger children getting injured with the pointy wooden skewers. Simply slide a variety of chopped or sliced fruit onto the skewers and make a healthy, colorful snack. For an added bonus, include a small cup of low-fat vanilla yogurt for a fruit dip.

2. Baby carrots and hummus: Who can resist baby carrots? After all, they seem tailor-made for kids’ small fingers. Pair with a homemade or store-bought

hummus, which is full of protein and fiber. You can even find dessert hummus, which may prove particularly appealing to children’s palates.

3. Crackers and cheese: Choose whole-grain crackers and a low-fat cheese. This provides the crunch of chips without the fat and calories. In addition, cheese adds protein and the benefits of calcium and other nutrients found in dairy.

4. Nut butters and pretzels: Kids need unsaturated fats to spur brain

growth and overall development. Nuts and nut butters offer these good fats. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases says peanut butter can be given to kids as young as four months old, and that early exposure may prevent peanut allergies. Additional nut butters include almond and cashew. Let kids dip pretzels into the nut butter for a filling snack.

5. Overnight oats creations: Let kids take part in building jars or containers of overnight oats with their favorite ingredients. When old fashioned rolled oats are mixed with low-fat milk (or dairy alternatives), raisins, granola, fresh fruit, chia seeds, and even low-fat yogurt and left to sit overnight, the result is a spoonable treat that’s ideal for meals and snacks. Plus the fiber in oatmeal will help keep children feeling fuller longer.

6. Frozen smoothie bowl: This is a great alternative to ice cream. Simply blend your child’s favorite frozen fruits (and toss in a few veggies) with low-fat Greek yogurt. Serve in a bowl with toppings like granola, finely chopped nuts or coconut flakes.

7. Energy balls or bars: Mix dates, nuts, seeds, and rolled oats and press into bar shapes or roll into bite-sized balls when kids need a sweet and energizing snack.

8. Turkey and cheese roll-ups: Ensure that kids are getting enough protein by offering a lean protein source like sliced turkey. Roll up a slice of turkey or sliced chicken breast around a cheese stick for a portable and fun snack. Healthy snacks for children are easier to dream up than one may think. It can take children several times of seeing a new food on his or her plate before being inclined to try it, so parents should stay the course with healthy snacks even if kids are initially reluctant to try them. Transform a playroom into a space that grows with the family

Parents typically make certain changes around a home to ensure it’s accommodating to children. Childproofing is a necessity, but entire rooms also may be transformed with children’s enjoyment and well-being in mind.

It’s common for homeowners to set aside rooms for children to play and explore. These playrooms may initially feature infant swings and bouncers, and eventually start to accumulate the toys that kids receive on holidays and birthdays. Easels, building block sets, puzzles, video games, books, and so much more fill these playrooms where young

children spend the majority of their time engrossed in imaginative play. But as children grow, playrooms may no longer be necessary. Homeowners can ensure these rooms evolve with the family, and here are a few ways to do just that.

Make it a home theater/gaming room

The National Institutes of Health says children between the ages of eight and 17 spend an average of 1.5 to 2 hours playing video games each day. It’s important for parents to monitor their children’s gaming, particularly when kids participate in social platform games that involve people with an internet connection chatting and working together. One way to do so is to locate the gaming setup in a central location, like a home theater room.

Establish a hobby space

Trade in kids’ toys for “toys” that everyone in the family will enjoy. Turn the room into one where family members can explore their passions. This may include scrapbooking, painting, yarn crafts, collecting, photography, and more.

Create a quiet learning spot

As children grow up, they may need to spend more time studying. Transforming a playroom into a library or a study space can provide that out-of-the-way spot to get homework and studying done. Adults in the home also can use it for reading, paying the bills or any other task that requires concentration and quiet.

Build a home gym

If the space is large enough, bring in some workout equipment and make the play space one that encourages exercise and fitness. You may not even need large equipment and can utilize interlocking foam tiles that already may be in the playroom. With some free weights, resistance bands and even your own body weight, you can perform a number of beneficial exercises.

Expand your living space

If the playroom currently abuts another room that can use some more real estate but is separated by a wall, take down the wall to increase the square footage.

Set it aside for guests

Clean out the toys and bring in a bed and nightstand. Now you’ll have a dedicated spot for overnight guests to stay, or a room that visiting older children (and eventually grandchildren) can call their own.

Playrooms are much-used areas when children are young. These rooms can evolve as kids get older and families’ needs change. (MS)

Carmen Chavez O’Daniel, age 79, went to be with the Lord on April 27, 2024, in Italy, Texas, at the Renaissance Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.

In Memory of Billy Heard

Billy (Bill) Earl Heard, age 82, passed away peacefully at his home in Palmer, Texas, on Friday, August 2, 2024.

Bill graduated from El Centro College with an associate’s degree in applied science in December 1971. He took the first classes offered in computer science and began a career in computer programming. His professional career in the 1970s took him to the Middle East working in Tehran, Iran, for Bell Helicopter. His career continued with Levi Strauss, Baylor Health Care Systems, and Alcatel. He retired in 2001.

Visitation was Thursday, May 2 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Wayne Boze Funeral Home in Waxahachie. The celebration of life was Friday, May 3 at 10 a.m. at Wayne Boze Funeral Home. Burial followed at Sardis Cemetery in Midlothian.

Carmen met the love of her life, Robert, in Yuma, Arizona. They were married on September 7, 1963, and they shared 59 years of this union. Carmen was a loving mother and devoted wife and sweet “Nana” and great-grandmother.

She was a member of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis.

She was preceded in death by husband Robert O’Daniel; parents Manuel and Anita Bedoya Chavez; brothers John and Alfred Chavez; and infant twin brothers.

She is survived by brothers Bobby and Don Chavez.

A celebration of Billy’s life was Saturday, August 10 at 2 p.m. at J.E. Keever Mortuary Chapel in Palmer, officiated by his friend John Schumacher.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary, Inc.

He was born in Palmer on January 31, 1942, to Robert Lee Heard and Irene Moon Heard. He was the youngest of five children and the last surviving member of his generation in his family.

He grew up in Palmer and attended Palmer schools, graduating from Palmer High School in 1960. He was baptized at First Baptist Church in Palmer. He played baseball and basketball in high school and worked at Jack Oates Gas Station as a fill-up attendant. He was known as ‘Red Heard’ for his flaming red hair. He helped with the family farm raising cotton and went to work full time at Sears and Roebuck in Dallas after high school.

Bill met his wife Ella Betik at a New Year’s Eve dance at Sokol Hall in Ennis on December 31, 1960. They married on December 2, 1963. Bill and Ella settled at the Heard family home place in 1964. They built their forever home in 1977 with their own labor and the help of family and friends. Bill, or Uncle Billy as he was called, loved his Czech family and enjoyed the company of his brother and sisters-in-law, nephews and nieces, and the countless number of family parties.

He was known for owning fast muscle cars, and he enjoyed working on cars as a hobby and craft. He drove Fords his entire life, a legacy from his father. He loved a good car race, and he never backed down to a contender on the road if he could get away with it.

Bill found peace, freedom, and camaraderie in riding motorcycles. This hobby grew, and he established the Lost Daltons. He bonded with his 2000 Harley Davidson Springer, and he rode for over 10 years across the Golden Gate Bridge, through the Black Hills to Sturgis, South Dakota, to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and the Rocky Mountains. The motorcycle runs in the hill country of Texas were his favorite. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis.

Bill would ride as much as he could until he couldn’t ride much anymore. He just slowed down and started to ‘go easy.’ His health declined over the past three years. He remained at home, and Ella cared for him until his last day.

Bill is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ella; daughter Shellie and husband Jason Hollingsworth; son David and wife Teddi Heard; grandchildren Leanna Hollingsworth and husband Danny Dyke, Julia Hollingsworth, Emilie Hollingsworth, and Hayden Heard; great-granddaughter Stella Irene Lopez; sister-in-law Evelyn Slovak; brothers-in-law Wesley Betik and Bobby Betik; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Welcome to Texas, President Pavel!

“It was a tremendous honor to welcome Czech President Petr Pavel and First Lady Eva Pavlova as well as Ambassador Stasek and wife Dana and the entire Czech delegation in Texas following the 2024 NATO Summit in Washington, D.C.,” says SPJST President/CEO Brian Vanicek, pictured here with wife Joan and presenting President Pavel with the SPJST challenge coin designed by District Five Director Bradley Stavinoha. “Their July 12 visit to the Czech Center Museum Houston and their July 13 visit to the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange recognized and celebrated the contributions of the Czech immigrants who came to Texas seeking the opportunity to provide a better life for their families.” Large scale Czech immigration to Texas began after the Revolutions of 1848 changed the political climate in Central Europe. Since that time, generations of Texans of Czech ancestry have helped shape the state of Texas’ colorful history and contributed immensely to its progress. “The mutual relations that have been enjoyed by the Czech Republic and the United States of America are unparalleled in modern history,” says President/CEO Vanicek, adding, “The positive cooperation between these two independent partners continues to grow and remains inseparably bound by common values and a shared history. Our Czech heritage is not merely a thing of the past. It is also defined by the common bonds and trust that we share, and the sense of identity and community that is created when we gather.”

Come out for a full day of family activities with live polka music, kolache sale, bingo, cake walk, silent auction (inside PAC Building), children’s games, homemade ice cream, and a prize drawing.

Houston presents Sept. 19 discussion on Milan Kundera book

Look out Houston! The Milan Kundera Book Club returns to discuss his “novel in the form of variations” on Thursday, September 19, 2024, at Czech Center Museum Houston. The discussion and book

review begin at 7:20 p.m.

Summer is winding down, which means it is time for the last meeting of Milan Kundera Book Club, a series of events exploring the work of the Czech writer whose books became an international phenomenon. During the Soviet domination of Czechoslovakia, Kundera reminded the world of his native country’s central place in European culture. He was also drawn to the imagination of France, where he settled in 1975. The cultural form that preoccupied Kundera was the novel. He leaned into its skepticism and comedy to contemplate societies distorted by ideology and vacuousness.

Robert Cremins and Dan Price from the Honors College at the University of Houston will lead us in a lively discussion of The Book of Laughter and Forgetting, which back in late 1980, The New York Times called “the most original book of the season.”

Czech Center Museum Houston is located at 4920 San Jacinto Street, Houston, Texas 77004. Complimentary parking in adjacent lots; additional street parking is available on Wichita and Rosedale. It’s not too late to pick up your copy of

the book. Visit the CCMH gift shop or Brazos Bookstore to order Kundera’s novels.

SPJST hosts premiere bus trip to 63rd Annual Wilber Czech Festival

SPJST hosts premiere bus trip to 63rd Annual Wilber Czech Festival

The 63rd Annual Wilber Czech Festival began Friday, August 2, 2024, with events packing the schedule through Sunday, August 4. Wilber is a town 45 minutes south of Lincoln, Nebraska, in Saline County with a population of just under 2,000 people. The city was cited as “the Czech Capital of the United States” in 1987, in a decree signed by President Ronald Reagan. What made this year’s event extra special – from a Texas perspective – was the busload of passengers who arrived on the SPJST chartered bus. SPJST booked this premiere tour through J Team Management of Lubbock with Lori Laznovsky of Ennis as group leader. This was the same booking team which handled SPJST’s 2023 Holiday Tour of the Czech Republic – and once again, with excellent results!

“For all of us on the bus, I believe, this was our first chance to attend the Wilber festival, and it was a great experience!” says SPJST President/CEO Brian Vanicek. “I was honored to be a part of the premiere ‘Texas Bus Delegation,’ and we had a wonderful time -- on the way up to Nebraska, at the festival, and on the way back to Texas! Hats off to our newfound friends in Wilber for their hospitality and for

hosting a fun and enjoyable celebration.”

On average, 30,000 to 50,000 people attend the festival every summer but it’s a year-round process that includes 50 festival committees and more than 1,000 volunteers. “If someone starts getting paid, there would be a problem,” said Sheryl Kastanek, 67, in an article published by the Nebraska News Service, “I fear if we started paying volunteers to work, that sharing and working together spirit as one might get lost.”

Promoters of the event have characterized the Wilber Czech Festival as “three days of parades, dancing, music and Czech food galore.”

“And truly, it was a spirited event,” says President Vanicek. “Wilber may be a small town, but it has a lot of heart! I counted something like 85 scheduled activities taking place all over town over the course of the three days.”

The Czech Festival featured Saturday and Sunday parades, music, dancing, and dining venues and the two-day National Miss Czech-Slovak queen pageant. Helping to emcee this year’s pageant was the reigning National Miss Czech-Slovak Queen Destiny Hollingsworth of San Antonio. Representing Texas in this year’s pageant was Miss Texas Czech-Slovak Queen Katie Kostelnik of Hallettsville and her Little Princess Madelyn Kar-

stedt. Special thanks to Sister Kathy Podsednik, a member of SPJST Lodge 54, West, who has been supporting and coordinating the Miss Texas CzechSlovak pageant in coordinating the Texas pageant since the year 2000.

The theme of the 2024 festival was “Together We Can.” During the final event of the three-day festival – the Miss Czech-Slovak U.S. Queen Reception at T.J. Sokol Hall – President/CEO Vanicek presented Randy Kozeal, president of the Nebraska Czechs of Wilber, with a large Texas flag which had been flown over the State Capitol in Austin. In making the presentation, President/CEO Vanicek stated, “The great state of Texas and the great state of Nebraska have got a lot in common. Whereas, Texas – as a state – has the

greatest number of Americans of Czech ancestry, Nebraska has the nation’s highest concentration of Americans of Czech ancestry in the nation. We want to thank our new friends in Wilber for their wonderful festival and kind hospitality. Come on down and see us in Texas!”

On the bus ride back to Texas, riders talked up the proposition of converging on the small mid-western town again in 2025, and reaching out, perhaps, to include sister fraternals in the mix.

“Nothing official has been decided at this early stage,” says President/CEO Vanicek, adding, “We will be exploring the possibilities!”

Czech Republic tourism is surging with South Moravia welcoming over 500,000 tourists in 2024

South Moravia continued to hold its status as one of the top travel destinations in the Czech Republic during the second quarter of 2024. The region welcomed 589,000 visitors, with over 1 million overnight stays recorded, showcasing its enduring appeal.

Data from the Czech Statistical Office reveals that this visitor count is consistent with the numbers from the same period last year. Interestingly, the region saw an increase in international tourists, with 203,000 foreign visitors choosing to stay overnight. However, there was a slight decline in the number of Czech residents opting for overnight stays in South Moravia.

Despite the allure of events like the World Hockey Championships in Ostrava and Prague during May, South Moravia retained its position as the second most popular destination in the Czech Republic, trailing only the capital city.

Martina Grůzová, director of the South Moravian Tourism Centre, shared insights on the latest statistics and discussed the department’s ongoing efforts to attract new visitors to the region.
