Condolences We extend our heartfelt condolences to District Six Director Annie Vahalik and her family on the recent loss of her sister, Helen Zabransky. Helen, a dedicated member and longtime officer of Lodge 4, Hallettsville, leaves behind a legacy of service and camaraderie. She also served as District Six Fraternal Activities Coordinator for several years.

Helen passed away on December 23, 2023. Her funeral service was Wednesday, December 27 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallettsville. Burial was at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Hallettsville. Our thoughts and prayers are with Helen’s family.

State Tournaments Begin Let’s kick off the year by participating in the SPJST State Tournaments.

The first tournament, the Progressive 42 Domino Tournament is this Saturday, January 13 at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. It’s a fantastic opportunity to engage in friendly competition.

Countdown to SPJST Convention 2024: Key Dates, Elections, and Recommendations Dear Members, The 2024 Convention officially begins on Saturday, June 8 at Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center in Temple, Texas.

According to the By-Laws of SPJST From the 2021 Convention, under Article XII - District Directors, Section 59 on page 37, “Candidates seeking election for one of the seven elected District Director positions must state their intention to seek election and submit information to the Vestnik regarding their qualifications for a District Director position, in accordance with the procedures established and published by the Board of Directors, at least 120 days prior to the Convention. The Board of Directors shall help identify and encourage well qualified candidates from each District to seek election as a District Director and Alternate District Director. The Board of Directors shall review candidate information and may gather additional background information and shall submit the slate of candidates and qualification information to an ad-hoc Credentials Committee comprised of Convention delegates who shall review and provide the slate of candidates and information regarding qualifications to the delegates at the Convention.”

Candidates are asked to submit their announcements to the Vestnik no later than Friday, February 9, 2024, by emailing to melaniez@spjst.com.

Under Article VI - Convention, Section 20 on pages 14 and 15, “No motion to change by-laws or amendment thereto can be presented to the Convention unless the motion or amendment thereto has been discussed and approved by a lodge or the Board of Directors and submitted to any member of the Governance Committee not later than 60 days prior to the Convention so that the Governance Committee could study such motion or amendment and deliver its opinion. Recommendations must be submitted in the English language. The Governance Committee secretary shall forward all signed by-law recommendations to the Vestnik for publication. Rejected recommendations can be presented by a delegate of the representative body in the Convention during deliberation of the respective article.”

The Governance Committee shall review submitted recommendations for changes to the by-laws. The Governance Committee secretary shall forward all signed by-law recommendations to the Vestnik for publication. The Governance Committee will consider, arrange, and recommend motions for amending bylaws of the succeeding Convention; eliminate conflicts in the by-laws; codify and rearrange the by-laws; and deliberate and decide on all recommendations for amending the by-laws and, if necessary, prepare and present its own recommendations for changes to any articles. The Governance Committee will submit recommendations to the Vestnik enabling publishing 30 days prior to the Convention.

The Governance Committee will also recommend to the Convention compensation of District Directors. The Committee’s recommendations shall be published in the Vestnik 30 days prior to the Convention.

April 29, 2024 Pre-Convention Vestnik This Vestnik will include reports from the Governance Committee, Board of Directors, and each Executive Office.

The deadline for the Pre-Convention report submissions will be April 15.

May 4, 2024 Advisory Council Meeting - 10 a.m. (online) Convention delegates serve as members of the Advisory Council between conventions. Advisory Council members serve on a volunteer basis and meet annually each spring with the Executive Committee with the objective of keeping the Advisory Council members engaged and responsive in matters relating to the growth and development of SPJST. The 2021 Convention and 2024 Convention delegates are invited to attend.

Failure to do so will nullify the lodge’s delegates.”

It’s Your Life

Honesty Really is the Best Policy

J

ust before Christmas, a small deli owner experienced a prosperous day selling all his chickens except one. As he was closing up shop, a customer walked in and inquired about the remaining chicken. He showed him the last one in the case. The customer deemed it a bit small and inquired if there were any more available. The owner mentioned that he believed there was one more in the back.

Retrieving the chicken, he ran it under cold water and swiftly placed it in the freezer. After a brief wait, he brought it back to the front, informing the customer that luck was on his side – there was one more in the freezer. The customer looked at the chicken and told the owner he also thought it was a little small. However, he decided to make a compromise, saying to the owner, “It is a tad small, but I’ll take both chickens’ . . . and then the realization hit – OOPS! As a member, we contact a sales agent to communicate our preferences. The agent, in turn, might propose various policy options. It’s crucial to understand that when the agent presents alternative choices, it’s not an attempt to upsell or

earn additional commission; rather, it’s an effort to assess your unique situation and inform you of available alternatives. I consistently advise my agents to provide multiple options so that you are aware of the range of choices at your disposal. If an agent fails to present options, don’t hesitate to inquire about potential alternatives that may better suit your needs.

If you purchase the wrong policy, it may be 10 years before you realize it is wrong, then it really will cost you. We rely on the integrity of our agents to prioritize your well-being because it's your life that matters to us. That bond is accentuated by the solidarity that we share with our fraternal brothers and sisters in the Czech Republic. The Czech Republic declared a national day of mourning on December 23, 2023, for the 13 people killed by a 24-year-old student in central Prague in a mass shooting that has shocked the Central European nation. May God hold the families of those whose lives were taken and injured in the palm of his hand and may they find comfort there.

Empowering Growth in 2024: SPJST’s Call for Fraternal Sales Agents Dear SPJST Lodge Leaders, Greetings from the SPJST Home Office and Best Wishes to you and your lodge members for a Happy and Prosperous 2024. The work that you have done and continue to do for your lodge is truly a Brian Vanicek President/CEO blessing.

My greatest wish for SPJST in the

New Year is that SPJST continues to grow in a way that supports our fraternal mission – “Insuring and Enriching Lives.” It is through service to others and fraternal activities that SPJST conveys a sense of purpose and tradition; moreover, it is service to others that enriches our lives by creating meaningful connections with others. Truly, one of my favorite aspects of serving with the SPJST management team over the past 32 years has been the many lasting relationships that formed along the way.

SPJST is making a determined effort in 2024 to identify and enlist as sales agents qualified men and women over the age of 21 who believe in the power of fraternalism and fraternal life insurance.

In our efforts to meet this objective, your cooperation in identifying men and

women as prospective sales agents will be greatly appreciated. It could be a family member, a fellow lodge member, non-member, or a friend. What’s most important is that it be someone who is passionate, someone who loves learning and someone who loves helping others.

The individual may or may not currently be engaged in the sale of life insurance; however, once the commitment is made to become an SPJST agent, a necessary first step in the training process will be to secure a General Lines insurance license.

Lodge 18, Elgin welcomes new officers Lodge 18, Elgin met Tuesday, December 19, 2023, we had 19 in attendance. SPJST President/CEO Brian Vanicek and SPJST Vice President of Sales and Marketing Delisle Doherty from the Home Office and District Two Director Jesse Pospisil were present.

There was much discussion about the special meeting and the vote to sell the property. The current officers stated that due to illnesses and age, most of the offices would not seek reelection.

Delegates and Officers Elected We selected delegates to the upcoming SPJST Convention to be held in June in Temple. David Meyer and Mike Mogonye were elected as delegates. F.L. Meyer and Judy Sanders are the substitutes.

The officers for 2024 are: President Judy Sanders Vice President Paul Mogonye Secretary-Treasurer Bob Haisler Thank you, new officers, for stepping up to keep Lodge 18 going.

Lodge 23, Moravia held its meeting and Christmas party on Sunday, December 3, 2023, at the lodge hall. President Elizabeth Holub called the meeting to order, led the Pledge of Allegiance, and requested a moment of silence remembering our deceased members.

Lodge 39, Bryan members bring Christmas cheer to nursing home Dear Readers, A large turnout of Lodge 39, Bryan members met at Lampstand Nursing Home on Friday, December 8, 2023. We sang Christmas carols to the residents in the dining hall, and we walked down the halls singing all the way. We were so proud when the residents applauded after each song. We wished them all a merry Christmas and loved seeing their big smiles as we shook their hands. This was very special, and we enjoyed a wonderful Christmas day with them.

Afterwards, we all went to CiCi’s Pizza and held our meeting. We elected new offices and look forward to the new year. We want to give a big thank you to

Lodge 81, Needville reports on December meeting SPJST Lodge 81, Needville met Sunday, December 17, 2023. After a prayer of thanks by President Vincent Newman, everyone enjoyed a meal of honey ham and smoked sausage. Members brought side dishes and desserts.

At 1 p.m., President Vincent Newman called the meeting to order. Youth member Ruby Jones led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. All officers answered the roll call.

Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall read her minutes from the November meeting, and they were approved as read. Next, Treasurer Bradley Stavinoha read his report, and it was approved as read. Bradley then read Marion Morales’ special funds report, and it was also approved as read.

Under old business, Vice President Jeanette Newman went over the officer’s list and the rules and regulations.

A few changes were made. Jeanette will type up a corrected copy and bring it to the next meeting for review.

Youth Leader Kristen Jones announced that the youth club now has its own debit card which will make it easier if they need to purchase something for the youth. She also talked about having a Needvillle Kids Craft and Bake Sale during the Needville Citywide Garage Sale on Saturday, March 16. Everyone is looking forward to seeing what the

VĚSTNÍK youth has to offer for sale. To everyone’s delight, the youth handed out Christmas bags. The youth has been doing a great job. Keep it up!

Door prize winners were Bradley Stavinoha, Leon Anhaiser, Martha Polasek, Jeanette Newman, Nathan Hargraves, Joyce Lamensky, Willie Mae Kuykendall, Ruby Jones, Krystle Peterson, and Shirley Myers. Congratulations to the lucky winners!

Lodge 81, Needville: site of Jan. 26 Fort Bend County CHS soup tasting supper Fort Bend County Czech Heritage Society will host a soup tasting supper at a new location this year – SPJST Lodge 81, Needville, located at 13609 Violet (Violet and Highway 36) in Needville, Texas, on Friday, January 26, 2024. Doors open at 5 p.m.

Czech Polka Band M&M Playboys will provide the music.

The cost is $10 per person for soup and salad. Expected soups are broccoli

Lodge 38, Kovar gives to Smithville Towers Nursing Home

In support of the Socks for Seniors project, Lodge 38, Kovar donated lap blankets, word puzzle books, and lip balm to Smithville Towers Nursing Home. The donations were used as prizes and gift items for the facility’s annual Christmas party.

S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living Director J.R. Coleman reported on the upcoming independent living rest home to be constructed in Taylor which will include 100-plus units, and they are needing to borrow money for this.

VĚSTNÍK Fraternal Activities Coordinator Pat Schleider thanked everyone who donated to this year’s quarterly charity projects. Pat also read a beautiful Christmas poem. Pat and Bob Schleider and Dennis and Elizabeth Hermis will deliver donations on December 12 to Tomball Retirement Home. Again, thank you to everyone for your generous donations.

Sick Committee reported Paul Bradford is doing well after his shoulder surgery. He was able to attend our meeting.

Audit Committee will audit books in February.

Lodge 151, Wharton shares quarterly meeting highlights

Lodge 80, Holland hosted a fun night of bingo on Thursday, DeLodge 80, Holland Christmas Bingo SPJST cember 21, 2023. Delicious hams were given away to lucky bingo players

SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton held its quarterly meeting and social on Monday, December 11, 2023, at Wharton Depot Museum. Vice President David Bucek led the prayer before the meal. A turkey and dressing meal was served to 13 members and five guests.

President Macha convened the meeting at 7:20 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and a moment of silence was held for our departed members. The roll was called, and all officers were present. President Macha then welcomed special guests SPJST District Six Director Annie Vahalik and husband Philip, 50-year member Eleanor Spacek and husband Marcus, 50year member Angeline Wasicek and daughter Sheila Minks, and Sales Agent Carolina Covarrubia.

President Macha recessed the meeting at 7:23 p.m. District Six Director Annie Vahalik presented 50-year membership pins to Eleanor Spacek and Angeline Wasicek.

Birthdays were celebrated. October, November, and December birthday honorees were Demetria Bacak, David Bucek, Benny Hundl, Edith Molberg, Ruth Sabrsula, Sheila Minks, Marcus Spacek, and Angeline Wasicek. Each birthday honoree received a gift from the lodge.

Names for door prizes were drawn.

Afterwards, everyone participated in an activity singing “Twelve Days of Christmas.”

Director Vahalik wished us a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. She congratulated Sales Agent Carolina Covarrubia for bringing new members to Lodge 151. Annie stated she was going to attend a board meeting in Temple.

Lastly, she informed us that SPJST scholarship applications have to be turned in by February 1.

Carolina Covarrubia congratulated the elected 2024 officers. She informed us she was going to attend a virtual meeting the next day. Last of all, she stated she is looking forward to 2024.

Socks for Seniors: Lodge 84, Dallas members collect items for Villages of Lake Highlands residents

In Memoriam Resolution of Sympathy The Resolution Committee of Lodge Karel Havlicek No. 4, Hallettsville, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincerest and deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister, HELEN ZABRANSKY, of Hallettsville, Texas, who passed away on Saturday, December 23, 2023.

She was 72.

Visitation was Wednesday, December 27 at 9 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallettsville and was immediately followed by fu- Helen Zabransky neral mass at 10 a.m. with Father John Affum officiating.

Interment was at Sacred Heart Cemetery.

She was born Helen Agnes Zabransky on May 4, 1951, to Frank Joseph and Andela Agnes (Wagner) Zabransky in Shiner.

She resided in Breslau her entire life, attended Breslau school, and graduated in 1969 from Hallettsville High School.

Being a farmer’s daughter, along with her two sisters, she was no stranger to the hard work and long hours on the farm. Whether it was picking cotton or corn, or hauling hay.

After high school, Helen started working at Meyer Manufacturing and eventually working at Lavaca County Senior Citizen’s Center until she retired in 2016. While at the Senior Citizen’s Center, she gave herself wholeheartedly to the community while driving vans, cooking and delivering meals, and coordinating events.

Her life was adorned throughout by her desire to help others - whether it be through her time or her many talents.

During her life, Helen was an avid seamstress, making numerous clothes and quilts. She loved to bake and cook for countless family occasions and celebrations, and was well-known for her kolaches as well as for her experiments where she tried new things. She enjoyed

church picnics where she would serve fried chicken and especially loved playing bingo.

Helen was a member of many fraternal organizations - SPJST, Catholic Daughters Court 797, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, and Sacred Heart Altar Society. She was a lifelong member of SPJST Lodge 4, Hallettsville, where she held the positions of secretary, treasurer, and youth leader for many years. Helen also served many years as SPJST District Six Fraternal Activities Coordinator and as vice president. She served as officer of both the Catholic Daughter’s and the Ladies Auxiliary. She fulfilled a commitment to adoration at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

When she had some time to herself, she loved to read, complete word searches and puzzles, and watch soap operas and game shows. Known for her thoughtful giving, she loved finding good deals. In her later years, she enjoyed keeping up with friends and extended family on Facebook.

Helen left an everlasting impression on those who knew her. Having no children of her own, her children were her nieces and nephews as they were growing up. Helen instilled in others a desire to serve, and her excellent memory and sharp wit made her a wonderful communicator and storyteller. She will live on in the hearts of her family, and in the wonderful memories she helped make.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by sisters Patricia Zabransky of Hallettsville and Annie Vahalik and husband Philip of Victoria; nieces and nephews Nicholas and Sarah Vahalik of Belton, Elizabeth and Jordan Hargrove of Leander, and Jonathan and Jordyn Vahalik of Victoria; and lots of great-nieces and nephews - all who affectionally knew her as “Auntie Helen.”

Pallbearers were Nicholas Vahalik, Jonathan Vahalik, Jordan Hargrove, Philip Vahalik, Jimmy Wagner, and Frank Horak.

Memorials may be made to the SPJST Scholarship Fund or Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

In Memory of Joseph Janecka Joseph C. “Joe” Janecka, age 89, of West, formerly of Burleson, passed away late Wednesday evening, December 6, 2023, at Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Hospital in Waco.

Funeral service was at 10 a.m.

Thursday, December 14 at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Ed Karasek officiating. Burial Joe Janecka followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery near West. The family received visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, December 13 at the funeral home.

Joe was born December 14, 1933, in New York, New York, the son of Joseph and Marie (Beran) Janecka. He was a 1950 graduate of Abbott High School and a 1954 graduate of Texas A&M University with a degree in industrial education. On June 14, 1958, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Alice Cepak, in Abbott. Alice preceded him in death on July 13, 2018. Joe proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956 before being honorably discharged at the rank of 1st Lieutenant.

He was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Burleson. Joe was also a member of the SPJST Lodge 180, Burleson; the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks Lodge; and past president of both the McLennan/Hill Czech Heritage Society and the Arlington Radio Club.

Joe was master of ceremonies for the Miss Czech Texas State Pageant, participated in the annual Westfest Parade of Costumes, taught the Czech language in West and Ennis, and researched genealogy of his Czech ancestry. He was an industrial engineer for Ling-Temco Vought in Dallas for 33 years before retiring in 1989. Joe enjoyed dancing, drinking a good pivo, being a great supporter of Texas Czech bands, listening to Czech music, camping, hiking, computer hobbyist, restoring old cars, electronics, and traveling through the states and Europe. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; brother Karel K. Janecka; sister

Mildred Hanak; son-in-law Richard Lowe; and daughter-in-law Kimberly Janecka.

Survivors include children Joey Janecka and wife Tracy of Georgetown, Carl Janecka of Burleson, and Angela Lowe of Burleson; grandchildren Joseph Janecka, Nicklaus Janecka, Cheryl Lowe, and Stephanie Ross and husband Dave; twin great-grandchildren Grayson and Lily Ross; brother Jerry Janecka and wife Marie; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Pallbearers were Nicklaus Janecka, Bennett Cepak, Adam Janecka, and Mark Janecka.

In Memory of Helen Kelner Helen Ann Kelner was called home on Monday, December 18, 2023.

Visitation was from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, December 28 in the chapel of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home in Rosenberg. The funeral service was at 2 p.m. at DavisGreenlawn Funeral Chapel on Friday, December 29 with interment following.

Helen Kelner Helen was born November 18, 1942, in Rosenberg, Texas, to V.J. Tajchman and Henrietta Polasek.

Helen was a 36-year member of SPJST Lodge 28, East Bernard where she was serving as secretary. She held other offices at Lodge 28, including youth leader. She was a delegate to the SPJST state conventions for many years and served as the District Six representative and secretary for the Publication Committee from 1996 to 2020.

She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Anton Joseph Kelner; son Anthony Kelner; daughter Jessica

In Memory of Evelyn Wotipka Evelyn Kotrla Wotipka, age 92, left this world on Friday, December 1, 2023.

Visitation and memorial service was at SterlingWhite Funeral Home in Highlands on Friday, December 8 from 11 to 1 p.m.

Evelyn was born on June 1, 1931, in Crosby, Evelyn Wotipka Texas, to Edward and Lydia Romanek Kotrla.

On August 5, 1947, 16-year-old Evelyn went to a dance at the Crosby Catholic Parish Hall. She wore a pink polka-dot dress and saw a handsome man standing at the bar. His name was Edgar, and he offered to buy her a strawberry soda. They dated for two years and married on October 16, 1949, at the Czech Moravian Church in Crosby, They resided in the Baytown-Highlands area for 66 years, where they raised two children, Johnny and Cynthia.

Edgar and Evelyn enjoyed traveling, dancing, camping, and deer hunting together. She liked to sew, quilt, garden, play bingo, crochet, and volunteer her time to many organizations.

She was a member of SPJST Lodge 91, San Jacinto.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband Edgar; parents Edward and Lydia Romanek Kotrla; and brother Rueben Kotrla.

Evelyn is survived by son John Wotipka and wife Donna; daughter Cynthia Boland and husband Michael; grandchildren Stephanie Manning and husband Mike, Tara McKinney, and

In Memory of David Kocian David George Kocian, age 74, of Gerald, Texas, passed away early Sunday morning, October 8, 2023, at West Rest Haven in West.

A rosary was recited at 6 p.m.

Thursday, October 12 at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel, followed by visitation until 8 p.m. Mass of David Kocian Christian burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, October 13 at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Tours, with Reverend Walter Dhanwar as celebrant.

Burial followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery near West.

David was born February 2, 1949, in Penelope, the son of George and Josephine (Prikryl) Kocian. He attended Penelope schools. On October 14, 1967, he was united in marriage to Helen Kolenovsky in Hubbard. David was a member of St. Martin’s Catholic Church where he served as an usher and helped with the annual church picnic. He also served in the United States Army National Guard and was a member of SPJST Lodge 54, West. David worked weddings and bingo on Wednesday and Friday nights at Geneva Hall. He was a radiator foreman for Bellmead Radiator for 45 years before retiring in 2019.

David enjoyed being outdoors, working in his yard, going on cruises, gambling in Louisiana, and was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys and Dallas Mavericks. He loved spending time with his family, especially attending all of his grandchildren’s activities.

David was preceded in death by his parents; grandson Bridger Hogan; brother Danny Kocian; sister Diane Jupe; and nephew Jason Snokhous.

Survivors include his beloved wife of

56 years, Helen Kocian of Gerald; children Lori Hogan and husband Darrell of Granbury and Tim Kocian and wife Rachael of Gerald; grandchildren Kassidy Montgomery and husband Brian, Ashlan Brock, Kailee Brock and boyfriend Remington, Caidn Kocian and girlfriend Rileigh, Conner Kocian and girlfriend Chloe; great-grandchildren Judson and Oaklyn; brother Ervin Kocian; sister Eileen Janek and husband David; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

TCHCC exhibition traces evolution of the U.S. Dollar from the Czech Lands Make plans to be at Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center (TCHCC) in La Grange, Texas, on Friday, January 12, 2024, for the open-

ing of “From the Silver Czech Tolar to the U.S. Dollar,” a traveling exhibition presented by the East Bohemia Museum in Pardubice and the University of Pardubice, Czech Republic.

The Jáchymov tolar from 1529.

The Tolar is one of the important legacies that Czechs gave to the world.

Dr. Petr Vorel, Czech historian, numismatist and Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy at the University of Pardubice, and his team from the Czech Republic will be present for the exhibit opening and will deliver a short presentation. Dr. Vorel’s longterm research interest is the economic and political history of Central Europe with an emphasis on the history of monetary circulation. He is the author of numerous books, including From the Silver Czech Tolar to a Worldwide Dollar: The Birth of the Dollar and its Journey of Monetary Circulation in Europe and the World from the 16th to the 20th Century.
