It’s Your Life

You Are Not Here Long

T

his article comes from a book I use as one of my daily references: “You Are . . . Realizing Who You Are Because of Who God Is” by Emma Mae McDaniel.

We have so much anticipation built toward moments, and before we know it, we are reflecting on them saying, “Remember when?” or “Goodness, that went

fast!” In the moments and anticipations of life, we don’t see the quickness of them, but we think about how fast time flew by pretty much every time we look back on them. Though in the moment this may be hard to believe, our life truly goes by in a blink of the eye in comparison to the length of eternity. James said that our life is like the morning fog – it’s here a little while, and then it’s gone.

I could write an entire book of all the godly advice he has shared with me. One of these pieces of advice was when he told me about the four W’s. They represent four different groups of people that we find ourselves in, which consist of the Wishers, the Waiters, the Watchers, and the Workers.

The Wishers are people who wish their life away, and they neglect making the most of the moment they are in because they are constantly wishing they were in the next one.

The Waiters never get to work because they are waiting for the “perfect moment” to be obedient to the Lord and love people and serve wholeheartedly and walk by faith is right now.

The Watchers do exactly that – they watch. They watch life go by because they allow fear or apathy to take each moment captive.

The Workers are the ones who go and make the most of the life they have been given. When I think of the Workers, I think of the verse that says, “This is the day that the Lord has made, we will re-

Thursday, October 19 to Saturday, October 21, 2023 SPJST members enjoyed a visit to the Texas Rose Festival in Tyler, Texas. The tour group met for breakfast at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. They stopped to enjoy time at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas before heading to Tyler to see and appreciate the Texas Rose Festival and other Tyler destinations.

SPJST Home Office Halloween Home Office staff enjoyed a spooky celebration on Tuesday, October 31 featuring a luncheon of games, music, costumes, and many decorated pumpkins. Staff who decorated pumpkins won prizes from our Facebook voting contest. Great job to all participants!

Lodge 8, Weimar holiday lunch November 27 SPJST Lodge 8, Weimar will have its next meeting and lunch on Monday, November 27, 2023, at 12 noon at Oakridge Smokehouse Restaurant in Schulenburg.

At this meeting, it will be time to elect officers and our delegate to the convention in Temple next year.

Sock Donations Appreciated Please remember our charity project, which is socks for seniors. These socks will go to area nursing facilities. This can be any kind of socks—ankle, calf, quarter, etc.

Lodge 9, Snook to host December 10 memorial service The Wednesday, November 1, 2023, meeting of SPJST Lodge 9, Snook was called to order by President Donnie Hejl at 7:10 p.m. Jolie Jakubik led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Roll of officers was called. Minutes from the October meeting were approved. Hall manager, communications, youth club, treasurer, and statewide reports were given.

The youth club discussed their Christmas activities which include participating in the Angel Tree, providing food boxes, and Operation Christmas Child.

Under old business, we discussed our memorial service which will be held on Sunday, December 10 starting at 5 p.m. with a potluck meal. The youth club will also present a program.

Under new business, Snook EEA will hold a New Year’s Eve dance at the hall featuring Ed Kopecky and the Fun Time Czech Band. Doors will open at 7 p.m., and the dance will be from 8 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Black-eyed peas and cornbread will be served at midnight. Motion was passed to donate the hall rental.

We discussed rebuilding the front porch of the hall, and we elected officers.

Ms. Ann Sebesta presented a certificate of appreciation from the Kolache Festival.

November birthdays are Sheila Orsak on the 7th and Donnie Hejl on the 27th.

The meeting adjourned at 8:15 p.m.

Lodge 18, Elgin meets Dec. 3 to address sale of hall and property Dear Members, Please make plans to attend a special called meeting of SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin on Sunday, December 3, 2023, at 3 p.m. at the lodge hall, located at 702 Hwy 95 North in Elgin. Lodge leaders are considering the sale of the lodge building as a way for the lodge to take advantage of the significant equity that exists in the property. Correspondingly, and in accordance with SPJST operational procedures, a special called meeting will be held to discuss, consider, and vote on the proposed sale. Lodge 24, Cyclone Christmas party December 4

The recent Spacek reunion was held at historic SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville. Among the attendees was Kaye Kubena Walla, pictured in this family photo standing at the top on the porch, front row, second from the right. Kaye holds a unique family connection as she is the aunt of both Lodge 1 President Sharon Fritsch and Treasurer Ronnie Pflughaupt, and she is the granddaughter of JR Kubena, who served as the first secretary of SPJST. It’s a remarkable fact that over a century after the establishment of SPJST and the construction of Lodge 1, it continues to be used by one of JR’s family members. Many of those present at the reunion are also members of the organization. To clarify, JR’s son married into the Spacek family, which explains Kaye’s presence at this family event. This story serves as a testament to the legacy and path set by those who came before us. It’s truly amazing to reflect on the enduring connection to our founding fathers, especially Great-Grandpa Kubena!

Lodge 18, Elgin: what’s next for our lodge?

Here we are at the end of another year. What do we do? We really need the input from our membership. How do you feel about your hall?

There have been many fun times at this great hall. Many members worked hard to get the hall built. Think of all the friends you made here. I know Johnny and I have made a lot of friends here.

We enjoyed dancing and attended many parties here. How times have changed.

We do have two more dances this year: Sunday, December 10 – The Red Ravens and Sunday, December 31 – New Year’s Eve dance with The Alibis.

The October meeting was not well attended.

Lodge 24, Cyclone met on Monday, October 10, 2023, at Flag Hall. President Brenda Maddux called the meeting to order with a silent prayer for our deceased members and the war in the Middle East. Cathy Bruggman read the minutes of the last meeting, and they were approved. Linda Wilde gave the treasurer’s report. Cathy Bruggman gave the FAC report and said that Cars & Guitars will be at Camp Kubena on November 4.

We had many discussions of routine matters. We will not have Mollie B in 2024 as they are slowing down.We will have a Christmas party at Flag Hall on Monday, December 4. The hall will open at 6:30 p.m., and you must call Brenda Maddux by November 27 to give the number of guests who will be attending. Leave a message. Brenda’s number is 254-721-1682.

Birthday in October is this writer who turned 86 on October 22. Wedding anniversaries are Kim and Derek Campbell at 29 years and Brenda and Mark Maddux at 31 years.

Lodge 25, Ennis plans meal to celebrate April 8 eclipse Dear Readers, Lodge 25, Ennis met on Thursday, October 12, 2023, beginning with a meal Betty prepared consisting of chicken and dumplings, pea salad, carrots, and cake for dessert. Thank you, Betty! Margaret led the Pledge of Allegiance. Prayers for those on the sick list include Brad Jones, deceased member Bobby Trojacek, and Brian Holland who is serving in the Texas National Guard in Egypt.

Reports were read and accepted.

Discussion held regarding update of renovation of the barbecue pit building, the ongoing floor issue, and septic tank repair. Rita mentioned that the youth club will meet on Sunday, November 5 and make decorations for the nursing home.

Looking ahead, we are planning to sell meals in celebration of the Eclipse of The Sun on Monday, April 8, 2024.

More information to come. Betty reminded everyone that she is selling kolaches and strudels for the fall fundraiser. Charlie Jurcik, Emil Martinek, and Harry Matus were selected to be on the Nominating Committee for the upcoming November elections.

Lodge 30, Taiton to install officers at December meeting Dear Vestnik Readers, SPJST Lodge 30, Taiton members came together to celebrate Grandparents Day on Sunday, September 10, 2023, at St. John’s Parish Center. A moment of silence was observed for sick and departed members.

The SPJST Lodge 30 September meeting was called to order by President Yvonne Marcaurele. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by the membership.

The reading of the minutes for the August meeting were approved. Five officers, 16 adult members, 16 youth members, and our grandparents were in attendance.

Treasurer Lisa Bubela reported on the financial standing of our lodge. It was reported that there were no outstanding bills at this time.

FAC Patsy Baker informed members of the upcoming events around the state.

Secretary Marjorie Treumer then shared the report of new insurance issued, terminations, and lapsed policies with the members. She also reported that Ardis Bacak was requesting to have her membership transferred back to Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje.

Youth Leader Lisa Bubela informed members of upcoming important dates.

She shared that the membership was invited to an end of summer celebration at The Lost Lagoon in El Campo on Sunday, September 17 at 11 a.m. She also told members that each youth member who participated at SPJST state competition would receive $25. Lisa then made a motion that admission for all active adult members be paid for at the end of summer celebration. Stephanie seconded the motion, and it carried.

Karen Kaspar made a donation of $100 to the youth club. Taiton Community Center Fall Festival will be on October 1, and each family is asked to bring an item for the cake walk. District Six Fall Fun Day will be October 21 at Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange. Please arrive at 10 a.m.

New Business District Five Director Bradley Stavinoha invited us to CzechFest on October 14 at Lodge 88, Houston from 1 to 9 p.m.

The nominating committee will need to meet prior to the next meeting in order to arrange for a list of nominations for next year’s officers. Officers will then be installed at the December meeting before the St. John’s Scholarship Games Party. We will once again be assisting in the kitchen as well as other activities that day.

The Grandparents Day breakfast was another successful endeavor enjoyed this year. Thank you to everyone for coming together to make it such a success.

Happy anniversary was wished to Bubba and Patsy Baker. Many more great years of wedded bliss are wished for all of them.

Happy birthday was wished to Heather Garrett and Maverick Marcaurele. Many more years of celebrating to come are wished for them.

The next meeting will be Sunday, November 5 at 1:30 p.m. at Taiton Community Center with the youth meeting to follow.

Twelve members and one guest recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Minutes were read and approved by Tammy Pavelka in absence of Secretary Carla Price. Treasurer Cari Hammer gave the treasurer’s report. Cari Hammer made a motion to shop for interest rates to move a CD at maturity date. The motion, seconded by Bobby Kubitza, carried. Texas Shed haulers enjoy annual picnic at SPJST lodge 24, cyclone

Once a year, large semitrucks, mostly Peterbilt, from all over the United States including Upper State New York and Canada gather at Lodge 24, Cyclone for a reunion with games and activities for young and old as well as plenty to eat for all. There is a raffle with prizes given away and other activities.

Anton Vrazel of Lodge 15, Buckholts attains Grand Age of 96 SPJST congratulates Anton J. Vrazel, a member of Lodge 15, Buckholts, who celebrated his 96th birthday on October 9, 2023. As such, Brother Vrazel now receives all SPJST benefits with no further dues or assessments.

Anton was born at home in Milam County, Texas, to Lawrence Vrazel, Sr. and Albina (Sustek) Vrazel on October 9, 1927. His siblings include Lawrence Vrazel, Jr., Edward Vrazel, and Evelyn Vrazel Hubnik (all deceased) and Albert Vrazel and Alfred Vrazel.

Anton married Albina (Vansa) Vrazel at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Marak - Milam County on May 5, 1952. Albina passed away in 2019.

The couple was blessed with daughters Linda Vrazel Wilde (Daniel) and Rose Vrazel and three grandchildren, two of whom are deceased.

Anton was a farmer/rancher. He was also accordionist and manager for the Vrazel Polka Band for 55 years.

He enjoyed riding his ATV to the creek bottom to check on cows, playing his accordion, going on cruises and vacations - especially to Hawaii and the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, attending

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi to honor Veterans, celebrate Thanksgiving on November 19 Lodge 79, Corpus Christi enjoyed a meal of pork roast and sides celebrating Czech Heritage Month on Sunday, October 15, 2023.

President Mark Rebecek called the meeting to order at 2 p.m., followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. All officers were present, and 16 members were in attendance. On the sick list was Christina Rew. We wish her a speedy recovery.

Secretary Virginia Rebecek read the September minutes, and Treasurer Larry Elzner gave the September financial report. Both were approved. Larry read a thank you note from the Home Office for our donation to the SPJST Scholar-

Vice President/Fraternal Activities Coordinator Michael Urbanovsky gave the FAC report. He asked all members to bring socks to be donated. Michael gave a wonderful presentation on the Painted Churches in Texas. It was enjoyed by all. President Rebecek mentioned his great-grandfather helped build two of the churches.

Under communications, Secretary Virginia Rebecek read the list of new annuities, lapses, and death claims.

Under new business, at the Sunday, November 19 meeting, we will honor our veterans and celebrate Thanksgiving. We will elect officers and delegates at the December meeting. If anyone would like to hold an office or serve as a delegate at the Convention in 2024, please come forward.

Youth Leader Marcia Rew presented her report. Four members were in attendance. The youth colored Halloween pictures, and all received a goody bag from the youth leader.

Birthdays for October were Laura Rebecek on the 15th and Jill Sijansky on the 22nd. Happy birthday!

Dollar prizes of $25 were won by Jill Sijansky and Michael Urbanovsky.

At the November meeting, we will have turkey and trimmings. Members are asked to bring a dessert or salad.

Lodge 133, San Antonio members to assist community with projects Members of SPJST Lodge 133, San Antonio met on Sunday, September 17, 2023. All officers were present. President Marie Garcia led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. The treasurer’s report and minutes from the June meeting were read by Secretary Kathy Uribe.

President Garcia started the meeting by thanking all members for donating to the school supply drive. We voted to donate the items to the nearby Harlandale Middle School. The motion was made by Rick Uribe and seconded by Alisia Villarreal. We also voted to donate $100 to the Alzheimer’s Association. The motion was made by Alisa Villarreal and seconded by Rick Uribe.

Next, President Garcia recognized our member birthdays and anniversaries. She also wanted to acknowledge Grandparents Day on September 10. She offered a big round of applause to all grandparents who were in attendance. She also mentioned that September is Life Insurance Awareness Month and offered advice to anyone interested after the meeting.

Vice President Leona Uribe-Lacy reported that we have a large amount of members in our area who do not attend our meetings. We need to find ways to reach out to them and encourage them to attend. She also suggested ways for our lodge to donate volunteer time to charitable agencies. Our Home Office encourages each lodge to volunteer in our communities. Some suggestions are to volunteer to wrap presents. We could meet at the snack pack facility and pack healthy snacks to send food home on weekends for very low income families.

We agreed to collect water, food items, sanitizer, etc. to be given to homeless shelters like Haven for Hope. Any other suggestions are welcome.

With no other business, our meeting was adjourned. We then enjoyed lunch followed by several games of bingo.

On Tuesday, October 17, 2023, the Family Land Heritage program paid tribute to the Teplicek family of Rowena, Texas, for their remarkable contribution to the agricultural heritage of Texas.

In the heart of Texas, the familyowned farm or ranch stands as a cornerstone of the state’s economy and heritage. For almost half a century, the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) has recognized and celebrated this enduring legacy through the Family Land Heritage program.

Established in 1974, the Family Land Heritage program acknowledges family farms and ranches that have dedicated themselves to continuous agricultural production for an impressive century or more. Over the past four decades, this program has had the honor of recognizing over 5,000 such family farms and ranches across Texas.

Each autumn, TDA hosts a ceremony at the Texas State Capitol, an event that pays tribute to these remarkable families

who have preserved their agricultural traditions for generation after generation.

Among the distinguished honorees is the Teplicek family, who have made their home in Rowena, located in Runnels County. Their connection to the land dates back to 1898, making them a truly iconic representation of Texas’ rich farming heritage. The Teplicek family are also members of SPJST Lodge 49, Rowena.

The Teplicek family’s recognition by the Family Land Heritage program serves as a testament to their unwavering commitment to the land and the traditions that have shaped Texas for generations.

As the Teplicek family and others like them are celebrated, the enduring agricultural legacy of Texas continues to thrive, fostering a sense of pride, heritage, and a bright future for the Lone Star State.

Lodge 142, Houston members enjoy after-meeting activities Dear Readers, SPJST Lodge 142, Houston met at Lodge 88, Houston on Sunday, October 15, 2023. Our delicious lunch was spaghetti and meatballs, salad, and dessert.

Jack Manchack led us in a prayer.

President Dennis Hermis called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all members.

Present were 23 members and guest District Five President Dorothy Pflughaupt.

Roll call of officers showed all present except Youth Leader Amanda Muzny, Assistant Youth Leader Kyle Herrington, Flag Bearer Zac Coleman

Sales agents present were Mary E. Bird and Kerry Herrington. Territory Manager Kerry Herrington spoke on SPJST’s new annuity rates. Mary E. Bird spoke regarding updating your beneficiaries.

Secretary Elizabeth Hermis read the September minutes, and Financial Secretary/Treasurer Keith Kieschnick read his financial report. Both reports were approved by members.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Pat Schleider spoke on CzechFest, and attendees Dennis, Elizabeth, Debra, Kerry, and Keith reported it was a great day. She reminded everyone of the Vestnik puzzles and to send in their entries.

She also reminded everyone of the fourth quarter charity project - Socks for Seniors. Pat said that the school supplies

were donated to Lampkin School.

J.R. Coleman spoke regarding the S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living Center in Needville needs a new roof.

Sick committee reported Kerry’s brother is doing much better, and Myriam Zelesky is feeling better.

New insurance includes Shelby Bradford (Sales Agent Kerry Herrington); death claim - James T. Worsham, and termination - Edwin Wernecke Jr. By-Laws and Rules and Regulations Committee members are Dennis Hermis, Keith Kieschnick, Barbara LinneyGonzalez, Kerry Herrington, and J.R. Coleman. Birthday celebrants were Rosie Malota - 94 years young on October 9 and Jean Herrington - 85 years young on October 3. Happy birthday wishes was

Anniversary celebrants were Kenneth and Djuana Malota - 30 years on October 2. Congratulations!

Quarterly capsule drawing winners were Steve Roznovsky, Rosie Malota, Kerry Herrington, and Tammy Bradford. Each received $25.

We played bingo after our meeting.

Lodge 185, New Braunfels welcomes fall with fun Halloween activities Lodge 185, New Braunfels welcomed fall with Halloween activities, games, covered dish supper, and adult and youth club meetings. It was a beautiful fall Sunday at Peace Lutheran Church. The afternoon began with 13 families decorating their car trunks, setting up games and handing out candy.

Youth Leader Jessica McCoy led the youth club in a variety of fun activities.

Adults and youth enjoyed putting on their Halloween costumes and competing for the best costume contest. It is always interesting to see how creative the costumes are each year. We definitely have some very creative adults and youth in New Braunfels.

A covered dish supper preceded the meetings. What a wide variety of food, starting with the meat and ending with the pies.

We look forward to our next meeting and social gathering which will be held on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at Zorn Bowling Club. More details later.

3 Ways Seniors can Redefine Retirement through Community Connection (Family Features) Everyone benefits when older adults remain engaged, independent, and included. Instead of letting age define their circumstances, older Americans are embracing change, pushing boundaries, and transforming their communities through creativity, commitment, and service.

As a first stop for anyone looking to explore volunteer opportunities, AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps Seniors connect individuals and organizations through service and volunteering. AmeriCorps Seniors matches Americans 55-plus with opportunities to improve their communities through the contribution of time, passion, skills and experience.

“AmeriCorps Seniors is tailor-made for those aged 55 and older,” said Atalaya Sergi, director, AmeriCorps Seniors. “It provides a space for older adults to take charge of their ‘second act’ and use their time in valuable and impactful ways. All of our volunteers share a goal of making a difference in their communities, and many see their involvement as a chance to make friends and form meaningful connections.”

More than 140,000 Americans are matched with volunteer opportunities each year through three programs: RSVP, the Foster Grandparent Program, and the Senior Companion Program.

Consider these ways older adults can get involved in their communities.

VĚSTNÍK Respond to the Needs of Your Community With more than 115,000 volunteers, RSVP is the largest of the programs. The program partners with national, state, and local organizations to offer volunteers a wide range of service opportunities, from building houses to delivering food.

“All the people you meet when you’re a volunteer tell you their stories and experiences,” said Srini Srinivas, a volunteer serving with the RSVP program. “You find that very rewarding and it enriches your life. Doing this service is a way of paying it forward.”

Serve as Mentors For older adults interested in working with children, the Foster Grandparent Program pairs volunteers with local schools and other programs focused on children, caring for and working with classes, groups, or individual students.

“My motto is, ‘There is never a never, you can always accomplish something.’ I’m here to help the kids learn, be there for them, and teach them as much as I can,” said volunteer Priscilla Tsethlikai, who has been involved with the program since 2016. “They’re teaching me, and at the same time, I’m teaching them.”

Provide a Helping Hand to Other Older Adults Fostering relationships with other older adults is also a rewarding, and needed, option. Volunteers serving with the Senior Companion Program give about 20 hours each week and spend time with older adults in need of companionship or help with day-to-day tasks

such as grocery shopping, getting to appointments or paying bills.

“Volunteering has changed me, it keeps me grounded,” volunteer Carmen Swanson said. “When you help others and do for others, you enrich your life.

My favorite part is being available and of service to them. Whatever their desire is, whatever they’d like to achieve – if I can execute the task, follow it through and accomplish it then it makes my day.”

While it may mean different things to different people, the idea of choosing our own paths as we age provides one overarching sentiment: growing older can and should be empowering.

“We know there are stereotypes surrounding older adults, but we want people to shift their thinking,” Sergi said. “See the ways older adults continue to contribute to your life and communities, appreciate their wisdom and lived experiences, and join them in new endeavors. When the older adults in our communities are engaged, valued and genuinely included, we all benefit.”

They are supportive even if you go through a difficult time. They will water you, and they are not moved by your position. They just love you like that . . .

It’s not all people you meet or are your friends that will stay with you. Only the root type of people will stay no matter the season.

Identify people accordingly and remember, not everyone comes to permanently stay. Therefore, never make permanent decisions with temporary people. It may affect you big time in the future.

Soak tamarind paste in 3/4 cup boiling water for about 10 minutes, then push it through mesh strainer to remove seeds and fibers and extract as much pulp as possible. Stir fish sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, cayenne and 2 tablespoons oil into tamarind liquid and set aside.

2. Cover rice sticks with hot tap water in large bowl. Soak until softened, pliable and limp but not fully tender, about 20 minutes. Drain noodles and set aside.

Beat eggs and 1/8 teaspoon salt in small bowl and set aside.

3. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in 12-inch skillet over high heat until it just begins to smoke, about 2 minutes. Add shrimp and sprinkle with remaining 1/8 teaspoon salt. Cook, tossing occasionally, until shrimp are opaque and browned

For the Back to School Supply Drive, members of Lodge 229, Abilene collected and donated various school supplies to a local school.

5. Transfer noodles to serving platter, sprinkle with remaining scallions, 2 tablespoons peanuts and cilantro. Serve immediately, passing lime wedges separately.

Additionally, the ever-growing capabilities of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools have made it easier for scammers to develop smishing attempts that closely mirror conversation, making it simpler and more affordable to distribute cyberattacks successfully to a large audience.

“Whereas previous smishing and phishing messages often didn’t make sense, as generative AI advances, these messages contain fewer grammatical or spelling mistakes. As a result, users are less able to distinguish them from legitimate communications,” says Raina Kanakis, a security specialist with PNC’s Global Security Fusion Center.

Simple Precautions Can Mitigate Risk Vigilance is key, especially as attacks become more sophisticated. One way to verify senders’ identities is by crosschecking short codes — the five- or sixdigit number used by companies to deliver text messages to your phone.

SPJST - Painting the World a Better Place

By Miles Jones Lodge 154, Fort Worth For 70 years, SPJST has been painting the world a better place, stroke by stroke. When I first received this prompt, I was stumped. I didn’t know what to say, but then I was asked what I thought would make the world better if there was more of it, and my first thought was self-awareness.

When I think of making the world better, I think of how every single human on this beautiful planet could benefit from more awareness of the world around them and, furthermore, a look at themselves and their place in it.

I have been a part of SPJST practically my entire life, and what I have seen is

how it puts its best brush forth to help people and the world around us every day. SPJST isn’t just a life insurance agency. It’s a family that helps its clientele feel comfortable and welcome in the community that encircles so many of us.

If more people in the world would take that example and work to make others feel welcome and wanted instead of shunning them away, then this world would be so much more beautiful and brighter.

This world isn’t perfect. I’m not revolutionary for saying that, obviously, but I think one of the reasons is because of a lack of universal self-awareness. To me, self-awareness is being able to take a step back, look at yourself, and be able to genuinely judge yourself and your thought process. Self-awareness is being aware of your actions and how they affect others and their choices. Being able to take accountability for one’s own actions and decisions is a very difficult but

important thing to do. Furthermore, it is a massive step in the direction of making the world a better place. Having this skill can help one understand how others feel and cause one to be kinder in general. It can also allow one to know how to deescalate a potentially dire situation.

SPJST has taken a step back these past couple of years to reflect and consider what the youth and the leaders want it to be moving into the future, just as a painter steps back from his painting to reflect, make adjustments, corrections, additions, or deletions until the masterpiece is something he is proud to display.

When I look at SPJST history and how many people, young and old, it has helped, it inspires me to do better in coalition with this wonderful organization.

They haven’t been able to do it alone. It takes hundreds and thousands of helping hands to bring the world to a better standing point. SPJST has made mine and so many others’ lives better with the use of their amazing hospitality and homely aspects. It shows us that we can do better. SPJST is aware in the sense that they know they can’t fix everything and help it, but what they can do is the

Every day I like to wake up refreshed and set my goals for the day and how I can help, whether that is something small like complimenting someone or something bigger. I do what I can and give what I can. Often times, I will get in a phase where I need to self-reflect and change my ways for the betterment of the situation I’m in and for others. I think sometimes we can get caught up in our own minds and what’s about us, and I believe that if we could realize sometimes we are what is most important, we can help others more easily.

Only you can tell yourself how to feel and how to react; that is what I was told growing up. But sometimes it can feel like the whole world is telling you how to feel and what to do, and we lose sight of what we want and what our goals are.

It’s these moments that just propel us to focus more on ourselves and how we can help.

nevolence every day to affect our world for the better. It’s had its rocky moments, but it gets right back to helping as many people as possible quicker than ever. I’m so happy I’ve had the opportunity to serve with SPJST throughout my life, helping them help others little by little. To paint the world is to make it beautiful and warm, which is exactly what the SPJST Youth Program has been doing for 70 years. Painting is never as difficult as it sometimes seems—rough around the edges or incomplete—but it is painstaking actions such as these that make the painting better and a gorgeous specimen to behold. They have been surely painting the world into a beautiful mosaic worth admiring. I look forward to continuing to help SPJST positively impact the community for my children and my children’s children. I promise to help pause, reflect on the work of art SPJST is creating in all of us and help make adjustments to the masterpiece.

SPJST - Painting the World a Better Place

By Holly Jones Lodge 154, Fort Worth The iconic, beautiful painting, “Starry Night” by Van Gogh, while stunning, was created in Saint Paul’s asylum. It is representative of Van Gogh’s deteriorating mental health at the time. A painting that, no matter how straightforward or clear, everyone can see something different in it. In “Starry Night” by Van Gogh, one can see a landscape painting or a town’s skyline.

While someone else may see gloom, another may see joy or wonderment.

One can see pain, while another sees life.

SPJST has a long legacy, one that has definitely painted the world a better place. Just like in “Starry Night,” when people reflect on SPJST, they all see something different. The very foundation of SPJST was born out of the desperate need for immigrants to protect themselves when they couldn’t get insurance coverage from other agencies in the United States. Someone must have experienced great loss to determine the need for other immigrants to not experience what they did. They came together, each bringing their color palette, their technique, and their brushes to create this amazing organization. Some might see a life insurance company; some might see a mortgage company; some might be looking for investments like annuities, and some might be looking for social interaction and programs for their youth. This is a fine example of how one perceives their own life and how SPJST can help meet their needs.

To quote John 15:18, it states, “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.” Jesus, who is perfect in all things, was still despised.

With being a Christian, there are always people watching you; always someone to tell you how wrong you are, as I assume there are in the world of painting (Art). There is always someone who thinks they know better, someone who hates how you do things, or even someone who thinks painting is a lost art. However, even though they think they know everything, what they don’t understand is how to look past your mistakes, how to see a piece of yourself on a canvas or a piece of paper. To move past this truth, you must see behind the

SPJST surely has faced lots of scrutiny over the years, from the immigrants like my great-grandparents, facing rejection because of their language barriers, their lack of cultural understanding, and the way they even looked, dressed, and danced to the music that was unique as well. They came to America in search of a better life, and when they identified a need, they built an organization to meet the needs of their people and beyond.

Show the world the love that has been lost. SPJST has been a community centerpiece in towns all across Texas. From their halls to gather, providing programs for young and old, hosting dances and events to bring generations together has been the creative work of so many that have come before me.

To quote the inspirational words of Holocaust victim, Anne Frank, “In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart. I simply can’t build up my hopes on a foundation consisting of confusion, misery, and death.”

Trying to find the good in the world can be an overwhelming and daunting task, but we must see the good in others’ plights and walk a mile in their shoes to see and understand their vision and background and gifts they can bring to the world, or better yet, the gifts we can bring ourselves.

Like a painting, we are complex, covered in layers of paint, messed up in some parts, but sometimes our mistakes make us beautiful.

Consider holiday traditions you loved as a child and how you can share them with your own family. Maybe there’s a special recipe, craft, or family outing that you always looked forward to. You can also use the occasion to create new traditions - this is a great opportunity to con-

nect your children to their culture and family and foster a deeper sense of self.

Conversations and traditions can help children understand the historical, cultural, and familial significance of holidays while creating cherished memories and an appreciation for the season.

Encourage acts of kindness Encouraging children to perform acts of kindness is a great way to teach compassion and empathy.

Try striking up a family conversation about different ways you can show thoughtfulness to others, and invite your children to be active participants. After discussing, challenge them to put their ideas into action - it can be as simple as sharing their toys with siblings or friends or making homemade cards for a local nursing home. Including little ones in the

planning process and acting on their ideas ignites a desire to help others and provides a great way to unite and make a difference as a family.

Alternately, reach out to organizations or charities that need extra help during this season and ask how your young child can support their cause. Family Promise and Meals on Wheels are two examples of national organizations to get involved with.

Fostering these practices of kindness builds children’s self-esteem and instills values that will last far beyond the holiday season.

Redefine gift giving Inspire your children to actively participate in the gift-giving process - which doesn’t always have to include a physical object such as a toy or a gift.

Practice gratitude Conversations of gratitude are often put off until families are gathered around the Thanksgiving table. Instead, try to make it a daily activity. Use this Thanksgiving - and the entire holiday season - to kick off a family thankfulness practice.

One simple way to do this is by making gratitude jars with your little ones: • Collect empty jars or containers around your home and decorate them with any craft items you can find: stickers, tissue paper, magazine clippings, popsicle sticks, buttons or even photos.

Don't forget to include a lid with an opening.

• Next, cut paper slips that fold small enough to fit through the opening.

• Once your container is complete, set your gratitude process - try keeping the jar on your children's nightstands to develop an easy pre-bedtime activity.

• Encourage your children to write down one thing they are thankful for each day and add it to their jar.

This custom helps children develop an attitude for gratitude and appreciation for all that they have in life. Over time, the practice will become a valuable habit that will continue to serve your children long after the holiday feasts have been eaten.

Edwin James Plasek, 82, passed away on Monday, July 31, 2023, in Ennis, Texas.

Visitation was Thursday, August 3 from 6 to 8 p.m. with rosary at 7 p.m. in the J.E. Keever Mortuary of Ennis.

Mass of Christian burial was Friday, August 4 at 10 a.m. in St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church with Father John Dick a celebrant.

Edwin Plasek Interment follow ed in St. Joseph Cemetery under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary, Inc. Ed was born in Ennis on May 16, 1941, to Louis and Augusta Mary (Jurica) Plasek. He grew up in Ennis and graduated from St. John High School in 1959. Ed married the love of his life, Joyce Jurik, on April 14, 1961, and they made their home in Ennis. Ed served his country proudly in the United States Army Reserves.

He began his career at Sims Grocery and Safeway, the Pontiac House in Ennis. In 1976, Ed opened Ed’s Garage where he served the community with quality car repairs until his retirement in December 2022.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Bob Trojacek Jr. “Bobby”, a father, faithful friend, and member of the Longview community. Bobby was born on May 18, 1961, in Waxahachie, Texas, and his departure from this world was unexpected on September 27, 2023.

Visitation was Sunday, October 22 from 4 to 6 p.m. with a rosary at 5 p.m. at Boze Mitchell McKibbin Funeral Home Chapel in Ennis.

Funeral service was Monday, October 23 at 2 p.m. also at Boze MitJimmy Mach chell McKibbin Funeral Home Chapel. Entombment followed at St. Joseph Cemetery.

He was born in Ennis on December 13, 1951, to Henry A. and Evelyn M. (Haskovec) Mach. Jimmy grew up in Ennis and graduated from Ennis High School in 1971. He met the love of his life, Sharon Toupal, on Polka Festival weekend. They married on December 31, 1971. Sharon called Jimmy (Zabb).

Jimmy served his country proudly in the United States Air Force from 1971 to 1975. He was stationed in Wichita Falls along with South Dakota and Guam. He worked for Owens Corning Fiberglas in Waxahachie as a maintenance mechanic. He retired in August 2013 after 35 years.

Jimmy was a member of Saint John Nepomucene Catholic Church and SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis.

He was a car enthusiast. He loved classic cars. In his spare time, he worked on his Chevy, the ‘57, as it was called.

Jimmy learned to play guitar at age 10; he played his Fender and Gibson guitars. His favorite band was the Rolling Stones. Jimmy was a fan of the Ennis Lions, Texas Rangers, and Dallas Cowboys. He enjoyed mowing with his son, Dusty, at the Home Place, time spent there with brother Henry, and the get togethers at the Mach Shop when uncle Ivan visited from Colorado.

Jimmy (Papa) was a devoted family man. He provided for them, was dedicated, strong-willed, and proud of his Czech heritage.

He found his fulfillment in life from working on cars and just about anything to do with them. He was a huge fan and dedicated fan of Nascar.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis.

Bobby will be remembered as a kindhearted and funny individual. His infectious smile touched the lives of many people.

Bobby’s departure has left an indelible void that will be deeply felt by all who knew and loved him. May his memory serve as a reminder to each of us to cherish every moment, value our loved ones, and make a positive impact on the world around us.

Temple Czech museum may relocate as building is for sale

By David Stone | SPECIAL TO THE TELEGRAM October 25, 2023 In an attempt to bring in new exhibits, performances, and increased community involvement, the Czech Heritage Museum & Genealogy Center may be moving from its 119 West French Avenue location in Temple, Texas.

The museum has been operating under the direction of the SPJST Foundation since January, and the group hosted a series of community events entitled Night at the Museum. Turnout for the events were massive.

“We held the first two events at the museum, and we just ran out of space,” said Brian Vanicek, president of SPJST Foundation and president/CEO of SPJST insurance company. “We ended up hosting the final four events at the SPJST Home Office.”

The museum and the home office are separated by a single vacant lot along French Avenue.

This week, the 6,900-square-foot museum building was placed on the market for an asking price of $800,000.

If the building sells, the museum will be relocated.

One of the options for a new home is the lower level of the SPJST office that currently houses the Texas Czech Genealogical Society. That organization has occupied space in the SPJST building for the past 12 years.

The Czech Heritage Museum previously was located in that space for 30 years, until it was moved to its current home in 2003. Now, the museum could be heading home.

“The museum has always been community focused, and it will become even more so in the future,” Vanicek said.

“Based on the tremendous response we had to Night at the Museum, I anticipate you will be seeing more and more community involvement.”

“We were able to partner with several local businesses in bringing those six programs to the community,” Vanicek continued. “I can see the museum expanding on partnerships and collaborations in the future — namely, partnering with other community organizations and businesses that are working to make a positive difference.”

“This is truly an opportunity for the Czech Heritage Museum to expand our influence and relevance in the community and throughout the region.”

Vanicek said that while there may be other options for relocating the museum, the SPJST office does have some advantages. The existing downstairs space would be at least as large as the current museum, plus the building already has a community room that can comfortably hold 127 guests.

That community room can be used by businesses and organizations free of charge, he said.

A future Czech Heritage Museum also could include a small theater for performances and to show a “welcome” film to visitors, as well as space for permanent and temporary exhibits.

The current museum building was built in 1931 and known as the Northside Community Center.

“It was one of Temple’s earliest shopping malls,” Vanicek said. “It originally housed six stores, and tenants included a pharmacy, a grocer and a dry cleaner.

The museum bought the building in 2001 and it was renovated in 2003.”

According to Vanicek, the museum serves as a memorial to the pioneers who settled Central Texas. The mu-

seum’s library includes more than 23,000 volumes, including 18,000 books written in Czech. There is also an extensive collection of genealogical texts and research manuals.

“One of the major benefits of collaborating with other groups and businesses is that it increases our visibility and it enables the museum to expand current programs and build new ones,” Vanicek said.

“In relocating the museum, the emphasis will be on shifting to a greater level of audience engagement. We’re talking both on- and off-site concert performances, art exhibitions and presentations focusing on both historical and current events.”

How rock music freed the Czech Republic: Lecture demonstrates musical resistence to oppression

By Emma Weidmann Arts and Life Editor Baylor Lariat November 3, 2023 Reprinted with permission When Jewish composer Gideon Klein was moved from Nazi-occupied Prague to the Terezín ghetto, it didn’t stop him from writing and performing his music. He and other musicians continued to provide music as a symbol of hope, performing in secret before it was eventually permitted in the camp.

“He utilized his talents, this pianist and composer, even in the darkest of times and left a lasting legacy — and we should never forget about him,” Czech conductor and teacher Michaela Kufová said.

Kufová told this story and others in her lecture titled “War, Music, and Dissonance: A Czechoslovak Case Study,” Thursday afternoon, November 2, 2023, in Armstrong Browning Library at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Kufová, a teacher and conductor at Ondrášek Nový Jičín Arts School in the Czech Republic, demonstrated how music had been a key factor in her home country’s liberation from Nazi occupation and later Soviet oppression.

Though Klein and others were killed at Auschwitz only a few months before the camp was liberated, his story fits into a legacy of Czech musicians who defied their governments and oppressors by continuing to make and perform art in dire situations.

Kufová’s lecture was hosted by Baylor’s Keston Center for Religion, Politics, and Society, which houses a collection of materials telling the story of religious persecution under communist regimes. When Kufová was a

student for one semester at McLennan Community College in 2018, she became involved with the Keston Center’s mission to educate generations to come on the persecution which believers of all religions faced under totalitarian regimes.

The Czech Republic — then Czechoslovakia — was occupied by the USSR from 1945 to 1989. During that time, Kufová said censorship made it hard for those living in Czechoslovakia to listen to Western music or anything that contained lyrics unapproved by the govern-

ment. Her parents lived through this period and told her what their childhood was like in Czechoslovakia.

“My parents told me stories how they were sitting next to the radio, trying to find the right radio station and just really bad quality sounds,” Kufová said. “But, you could hear some Belgian, maybe some radio through Europe, and that radio played a significant role.”

According to Kufová, there were three types of music in Czechoslovakia during the Cold War era: governmentapproved, “official music,” alternative

music and underground music. The most popular genres of music at the time were disco, jazz and pop. Disco often didn’t contain lyrics, so it was safe for the public to hear, according to Kufová. Pop music was often about love — not politics — and was radio friendly in America, so it was acceptable in the

VĚSTNÍK USSR. Lastly, Kufová said jazz prevailed in the communist regime because the government liked that the genre was pioneered by Black people, who were the victims of oppression in the West. The genre was used as a political tool to cast Americans in a bad light.

“So they really like that, that the West is now the bad guy, so they can really broadcast that to Czechoslovakian people,” Kufová said.

Other than the genres themselves, there were some ways in which Western influences touched the official music.

Often, alternative Czech artists would

cover Western songs but alter them in ways that were acceptable to the public.

“They Czech-ified and translated the lyrics, but they kept the music,” Kufová said. “And then the Czech singer really sang the song. We didn’t know it was from the U.S.A. or U.K. because the lyrics were Czech, and 20 years later,

“It was OK for movies with Jane Fonda to be shown, because Jane Fonda had been critical of the Vietnam War,” Gardner said. “And so the communist authorities thought that anything that Jane Fonda did must be OK, and so you get these goofy movies like ‘Barbarella’ in theaters.”

Some artists battled censorship in Czechoslovakia, and their struggles eventually led to the 1989 “Velvet Revolution,” a successful — and peaceful — push for a transition of power. The band Blue Effect had a sound similar to The Beatles or The Velvet Underground and took the inspiration for their name from the Blue Book, which exempted young men in the USSR from military service.

Blue Effect was banned for writing a song called “Sunny Grave,” which told the story of a young student who burned himself to death in protest of the government. The music censorship didn’t stop there. One of the events which led up to the Velvet Revolution was the imprisonment of members of the band the Plastic People of the Universe. For refusing to cut their long hair or change their lyrics, the members were incarcerated, lost their jobs or were socially outcast.

Rock music — and its censorship — planted the seed for the peaceful Velvet Revolution, and the Plastic People were only one out of a long list of musicians and artists who contributed their creation to the cause.

Kufová ended her lecture by playing “Prayer for Marta” by Marta Kubišová, which was sung in the streets by protestors. Kufová remarked that “those who forget their history are doomed to repeat it.” She left the audience with one thought: “[Czech youth] really paid attention to what has happened to us in the past [to] prevent that from happening again,” Kufová said.
