As we prepare to bid farewell to the scorching summer heat and welcome the crisp embrace of fall, it seems that Texas has other plans in mind. Unpredictable weather patterns have left us sweltering in 100-plus degree temperatures, with the skies seemingly reluctant to bless us with a drop of much-needed rain. While it may feel like we’re stuck in a perpetual summer, there’s a silver lining to be found in the upcoming months.

September and October in Texas are brimming with exciting events and celebrations, offering us a chance to make the most of the lingering warmth while embracing the promise of autumn. One of the highlights of this season is the rich cultural heritage celebrated by our Texan communities, particularly the Czech heritage groups and lodges that are hosting an array of vibrant events. It’s a time when we can all come together to celebrate our shared roots and the diverse tapestry of cultures that make Texas the unique and vibrant place it is.

The Czech heritage events, in particular, are a testament to the enduring legacy of our ancestors. These gatherings offer a glimpse into the rich traditions, delicious cuisine, and spirited music that have been passed down through generations. Whether you have Czech roots or not, these events provide an opportunity to connect with our history and enjoy a lively atmosphere filled with camaraderie and cultural exchange.

September is not just about cultural celebrations; it’s also Life Insurance Awareness Month. While it may not be the most exciting topic, it’s an essential

one. Life insurance is a vital financial tool that provides peace of mind and security for our loved ones in times of need. It’s a responsible step towards ensuring that our families are taken care of should the unexpected occur.

This month, take a moment to review your insurance coverage or consider investing in a policy if you haven’t already. It’s an act of love and responsibility that can offer tremendous comfort and financial stability to those who depend on you.

As we anticipate the changing seasons, let us embrace the warmth of community and culture that Texas has to offer in September and October. Attend those Czech heritage events, explore local lodges, and consider the importance of life insurance in securing your family’s future.

In the face of the relentless Texas sun, let’s come together to celebrate our shared heritage and make the most of these precious moments. And who knows, perhaps with our collective optimism, we might just coax the rain clouds into gracing us with plentiful rain.

It’s Your Life

What if life doesn’t happen in an instant? Will you still be prepared?

Life happens in an instant, and tragedy doesn’t care what age someone is when it strikes. That was my theme for the past article. Now we need to ask the question, “What if life doesn’t happen in an instant? Will you still be prepared?”

We work our whole life so we can retire. Now we are retired, and our comfortable life becomes very uncomfortable because all that money we had starts to disappear really fast. Now the question becomes, “Are you going to outlive your retirement?” When you retire, it is no longer about what you can make but what you can get. Just like losing your life early, it is just as important to be prepared to live a long life.

If you are older like me, you probably heard the saying, “buy term and invest the rest.” The flaw to that thinking is not every investment will make you financially independent. If your investments did not work quite like advertised, you are now stuck with tough decisions. Do I have enough to retire? Am I going to have to just keep working? With no insurance, will I have enough to pass to my children? Do I have enough in savings to even bury me? Am I going to run out of money?

Instead of buying term and investing the rest, we should buy retirement then invest the rest. One of the safe ways to buy retirement is through annuities. Annuities are guaranteed to have more tomorrow than it has today. You cannot lose money on annuities. They are taxdeferred. You don’t pay taxes on the distribution until you use it, then you are taxed as ordinary income. If you die, your beneficiaries are taxed for only the taxable portion, and it is not privy to the estate tax. They have options. It is not part of probate, so your beneficiaries can access the money while the estate is being sorted out. Finally, you can take a lifetime distribution. This means you have money coming until the day you die. Die in a year, you got the money. Die in 20 years, you still have money coming in. Live to be 100, you still have an

income coming in.

I love financial advisors. Everyone will tell you invest with them, and you will be a millionaire when you retire. They will make you financially independent, you won’t need life insurance, and you can retire in a life of luxury. Problem with that, nobody can predict the future. They will tell you they are looking out for your best interest. That is as long as they can satisfy their best interest first - taking care of their bills and family. Ask all those people in 2008 and 2012 that were about to retire and are still working because that financial independence didn’t quite work out.

When it comes to financial planning, I give no advice. There are many really good financial planners out there and many bad ones, too. I will only tell you work with those who understand that true financial planning includes multiple strategies. If your financial planner does not have annuities or even a life policy in their planning for you, you may want to look somewhere else. Putting all your money in the market could be the best thing for you, but it could be the worst also. Make sure your financial advisor understands that. In today’s environment, every day we have members surrendering their life policies because they need money. Their retirement didn’t last as long as they needed it to. It’s never too late to start an annuity, but the younger you are, the more you can do.

Financial advisors are a dime a dozen so you don’t have to work with anyone you are not comfortable with. If you are not sure who to trust, I will be glad to refer you to someone I am comfortable with. And remember, “If life doesn’t happen in an instant, are you still prepared?”

“A long life may not be good enough, but a good life is long enough.”

My door is always open; figuratively and literally Stay blessed,

Dear Members:

Lodge 18, Elgin Seeks Member Input: The Future of our SPJST Hall

Dear Members of Lodge 18, Elgin, We are at a crossroads, and we need your input. The SPJST hall in Elgin has played a significant role in our community since its establishment in 1976. It has been the backdrop for numerous cherished occasions, including benefits, school functions, weddings, graduations, and many more.

However, the sustainability of our

hall is now in question. While some of our rentals cover their costs, our dances have not been profitable, making it increasingly difficult to attract live bands for entertainment due to low attendance. So, where do we go from here?

We believe the answer lies within our membership. Your opinions matter, and we want to hear them. What do you envision for the future of our SPJST hall in Elgin? Should we focus on increasing rentals, and if so, how can we achieve this goal?

Our upcoming meeting on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at 7 p.m. at the lodge hall is an opportunity for you to voice your thoughts and ideas. After all, the

hall belongs to the members, and your input will help shape its future.

Please join us in this important discussion and together, let's chart a path forward for our cherished SPJST hall in Elgin.

Sincerely, Lodge 18, Elgin Officers

Lodge 88, Houston shares special meeting results

Thanks to everyone who made the time to come out for the special meeting on Monday night, September 4, 2023, to deliberate and vote on the proposal to address drainage in the backyard while also adjusting some of the groundcover and adding planters and greenery to the space. I want to sincerely thank everyone for sharing their thoughts, respecting each other’s opinions, and ultimately getting us to something that I think will drastically improve the functionality and aesthetic of the back yard while still maintaining most of its “wide-open” charm.

Essentially, we will:

Add drain lines and inlets across the east side of the back yard which we think will dramatically improve water flow.

Add a paver patio between the annex and swings to keep water moving away from the annex / kids lodge as well as a small paver patio at the swim club gate utilized for early season Lionfish checkins.

Decomposed granite “beer garden” off the back patio up to the swings where we will place picnic tables for socializing and fraternalism.

The decomposed granite north of and between the playgrounds was removed from scope. The plan will be to give grass another try. I have asked the contractor to provide a quote for sprinklers in that area which we can review at the

September member meeting.

Speaking of that grass we will install: grass is cheap, the labor to lay grass is expensive. Expect us to call for a workday to help install that sod in the coming weeks. Your volunteerism is appreciated.

Removal of the concrete pads and concrete tables.

Add planters and flower beds throughout. We will target kid-friendly planters and drought-tolerant plants.

Again, thanks to everyone for their input. I think we are really going to have a backyard that we can be even more proud of and enjoy even more this fall, winter, and spring. But unfortunately . .

Friday Beer Gardens Canceled Until Further Notice

With the construction going on in the backyard, we cannot exactly host Friday

Czech Beer Gardens safely for the time being. I spoke with the contractor, and he anticipates being complete before the end of September. We will have them back up and running just as soon as possible. Stay tuned . . .

Again, we’re looking to add some entertainment to the fold for Beer Gardens this year. Initially, we’re hoping to find some solo acts that are willing to play for tips in the gazebo. If you, or anyone you know, would be interested in performing at a Beer Garden, please send an email to ryandgum@gmail.com.

SPJST WELCOMES

SPJST is delighted to introduce Brian Smith, who joins us as a sales agent. Brian is a member of SPJST Lodge 80, Holland. Lodge 88, Houston Czechfest is October 14

We are about one month out from Czechfest on Saturday, October 14, 2023, and we wanted to give some updates. You can still expect the Czech Orchestra to be there, the Dujka Brothers playing polkas in the gazebo, Czech folk dancers, kolache eating contest, fair games, inflatables, a dunk booth, great food, silent auction, and so much more. Tickets will be available shortly, but we did want you to know about a couple of new things we plan to specifically add/ adjust. Again, more details to come, but start getting excited!

Member Discounts: Members will be able to buy tickets at a discount ahead of time. There will be no discounts at the door so order early (link coming soon)

42 Tournament (Dominoes): Thanks to the SPJST Home Office for helping us organize our first 42 tournament in conjunction with Czechfest. Seriously, it’s been too long since you played 42, assuming you know what I am even talking about. More details to come.

Czechfest Market—The ballroom becomes a marketplace for you to visit local businesses, artisans, and Czech-inspired makers. Lodge 88 and the Czech Heritage Museum will also have booths set up so you can learn more.

We are very excited to announce that Maggie’s Fabric Patch from West, Texas, is joining us. After extensive research, we have determined that Maggie is the preeminent provider of traditional

Czech costumes (kroj) in the state of Texas. You can reach out to her at maggiegrmela@yahoo.com or visit maggiesfabricpatch.com if you want to preorder a kroj to have it by Czechfest . . . like the sweet one I just ordered.

Calling all vendors: If you own or work for a company that would be interested in having a booth in the Czechfest Market, please email entertainment.lodge88@gmail.org as Mary is organizing. We are asking for vendors to donate items to the silent auction in lieu of booth fees.

Food Distribution Improvements: First, thanks to the BBQ Committee for agreeing to cook for the event this year. We will have sausage and pulled pork on the menu. Dorothy and the Kitchen Committee will still be cooking up the sides.

We are still going to offer a full meal inside, but we plan to also offer sausages and hot dogs outside as well. We know the line can get pretty long, and that should be pretty grab and go.

Rather than include the meal in everyone’s ticket price, we will just let people buy the meal separately. It should lower the price point for people just looking to Czech it out and keep things moving.

So get excited, mark your calendars, and email us at members@lodge88.org if you think you can help organize (otherwise be on the lookout for the chance to volunteer on the day of).^

Many thanks, Aaron Rigamonti, President —SPJST—

SPJST - Painting the World a Better Place for 70 Years

For 70 years, SPJST has been making the world a better place, whether that means hosting charity events to help those in need or teaching the youth about our history and traditions. We have been working to improve this world in any way we can.

For 70 years, SPJST has been helping everyone, from the elderly all the way to simple dogs. Every year, we make Valentine’s Day cards for people who don’t have anyone at the elderly home, and this always warms their hearts when they receive their card. We also visit them every year near Christmas, spreading the spirit by singing for them and distributing Christmas cards to everyone there.

Another thing SPJST does to make the world a better place is by providing food to those in need. Throughout the entire year, we organize charity events where we prepare affordable yet satisfying meals and send them to places that require them. By doing this, we feed thousands. To further help those hungry and in need, we conduct non-perishable food drives where all our members bring items for those who require assistance. Not to mention the dances or sausage suppers we host. Twice a year, we sell dinner plates and play music so people can enjoy a meal and have fun dancing to polka music. The men of the club cook the chicken and sausage, while the kids sell the plates for drive-thru orders, and people who prefer eating inside. At

leader for Lodge 24, Cyclone and Lodge 89, Rosebud. She had five kids join the club, impacting everyone they helped for the better.

SPJST, we aim to keep everyone wellfed and spread happiness to everyone around.

We also reach out to animals to improve their lives by making toys and donating food for them. Every year, we create chew toys for them using old Tshirts.

We don’t forget about the kids either. During our meetings, we educate our youth members about Czech heritage through Vestnik projects and youth workshops. Our youth programs are led by youth leaders, and the Leaders-in- Training (LITs) assist our youth leaders and the kids with various tasks. Every year, we organize a youth camp where we take a short break from daily life to have fun. At camp, the LITs help the chaperones keep track of the kids while also teaching and assisting them with all camp activities.

During camp, we engage in fun activities such as a high ropes course featuring a zipline, rock wall, and a swing. We also enjoy the low ropes course that helps our youth develop teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. Additionally, we have smaller activities just for fun, like the blob, archery, bb range, and the pavilion. Moreover, we have the craft barn where we unleash our creativity. In the craft barn, we have crafted items such as picture frames from sticks, leather key chains, and one time we helped paint cornhole boards that we used at the pavilion the following year.

SPJST has been known for these activities since my grandmother shared stories of her youth when she was a member. She spoke about how much better the camp made kids’ lives. My grandmother, Patsy Baker, was a youth

SPJST has paved a new path in my life. Since I was a child, SPJST has helped me develop great social skills, leadership abilities, and even a better perspective on the world. My leadership and social skills always improved at camp with all the team-building activities we would participate in, such as the low ropes course, which we all enjoyed. Even as an LIT, I get to help kids break out of their shells while working on my own leadership skills. With all the charity events and hours I’ve dedicated to this club, preparing food and serving meals at events, and building a strong reputation in the community, I’ve become more aware of how my actions can change people’s lives for the better.

In recent years, our club’s membership numbers have been slowly declining, but that doesn’t deter us from holding these events. It gives us a reason to push even harder to keep our club going and reach more people’s lives. Considering all the lives SPJST has touched, we want to reach even more.

SPJST continues to work tirelessly every year to deliver the best this world has to offer and provide for those in need. The world is like a blank canvas, and it takes all of us at SPJST to paint a better world, one where everyone can receive the help they need from those around them, and those we nurture possess the skills to be leaders and support those around us.

STANLEY KONVICKA, age 86, of Wharton, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, in a Houston hospital.

Visitation was Thursday, September 7, starting at 5 p.m. with rosary recited at 7 p.m. at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home. Funeral mass and rite of committal was Friday, September 8 at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton under the auspices of the American Legion Post 87 and VFW Post 4474 of Wharton.

He was born on July 27, 1937, in Wharton to the late Frank and Mary Malek Konvicka.

Stanley was raised in the Wharton area and attended school in Wharton. He served our country honorably in the United States Army and was a farmer all his life. On November 27, 1963, he married Bessie Merta in Taiton. They celebrated 59 years together and were blessed with eight children. Stanley enjoyed meeting his friends in the mornings at the coffee shop (the office) and was known as a first-class sauerkraut and wine maker. He loved being outdoors and could often be found on his tractor or feeding and checking on his cattle. Stanley loved to try his luck in Louisiana occasionally and on scratchoffs almost daily. He loved to fish the Colorado River and Matagorda. The week-long fishing trip he took with his sons, other family members and friends, to Choke Canyon State Park, was an annual highlight, and a source of hilarious stories, inside jokes, and treasured memories. Many a fisherman came to him to get their bait and swap fishing stories. Stanley had a big garden and was always willing to share with others, as he

and Bessie sold their many goods at the Farmer’s Market in Wharton. Stanley always had a joke to tell, and many were told multiple times. He was an usher at Holy Family Catholic Church and the Lenten fish fries will not be the same without him as the hushpuppy fryer.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Frank, Ben, and Ed Konvicka; brother-in-law Daniel Brod; and sisters-in-law Elsie and Ruby Konvicka.

Konvicka and wife Stephanie of Boling, Steven Konvicka and wife Stacie of Wharton, Allen Konvicka and wife Melissa of Deer Park, Richard Konvicka and wife Angie of Weimar, and David Konvicka and wife Cylinda of Wharton; sisters Lillian Brod of Wharton and Mary Ann Polasek and husband Theo of Montgomery; sisters-in-law Bettie and Helen Konvicka; grandchildren Ashley Lucher and husband Jared, Amanda Kitzmiller and husband Cody, Christopher Hlavinka and wife Korenna, Cody Hlavinka and wife Sarah, Jody Konvicka, Matthew and Kayla Konvicka, Chaz Duhon-LeBlanc and wife Brittany, Quintin Zukywich and fiance ́ e Kimmy Taft, Paige Zukywich, Kyle and Abby Konvicka, Blayne White and wife Sarah, Brett and Brynn White, Andrew Zamazal, and Hailey, Holden and Taylor Meador; great-grandchildren Callie, Case, and Colt Kitzmiller, Emma, Logan, and Danika Hlavinka, Leah and Evan Lucher, Luke and Noah Hlavinka, and Ryleigh Zukywich; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Pallbearers were his sons and sonsin-law. Honorary pallbearers were his many nieces and nephews and his longtime friend, Irvin Ullmann.
