Leadership laying groundwork for lodge revitalization in 2023

In 2023, numerous SPJST lodges are thriving and continue to make a positive impact on the communities that they serve. At the same time, many lodges have been stalled by declining member involvement. In some ways, the distancing that was forced upon our lodge system between 2020 and 2022 by the coronavirus appears to have accelerated the decline in active membership that already existed before this crisis came into play.

We aren’t alone. Service organizations including the likes of Kiwanis, Rotary, and Lions are all seeking new and improved ways to organize events, fundraisers, and to recruit new members. Veterans groups, too, including the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion have also been grappling with declining membership.

SPJST’s mission statement, “Insuring and Enriching Lives,” reflects the premise upon which the Society was founded which was to bring people together for their mutual aid and empowerment. In 2023, the SPJST leadership is making a concerted effort to reengage its members and reenergize its lodges.

Part One

“Part One of the revitalization process will commence with the reassignment of members,” says SPJST President/CEO Brian Vanicek. “We’ll start the process by focusing on the 15 communities where new lodges were designated but never officially organized or chartered. This includes the areas of Trinity, Fairfield, Palestine, Tyler, Waxahachie, Corsicana, Mineral Wells, Plano, Brownwood, Vernon, Goldthwaite, Amarillo, Denver City, and Odessa representing a total of 342 members.

“In most cases only a handful of members were enrolled and there were never enough people to formally organize and charter,” says President Vanicek. SPJST By-Laws state that for permission to organize and then charter a new lodge, there must be “not less than 20 respectable persons who were not members of SPJST at the time of application . . . and have been accepted as members in anticipation of forming a new lodge.”

“In each instance, the members currently assigned to unorganized and un-

chartered lodge communities will be reassigned by the Home Office to an SPJST lodge closest to the address that we have on file for the member. Those individuals who are reassigned can accept the reassignment or request to have their membership transferred to any other active SPJST lodge,” says President Vanicek.

Part Two

Part Two of the reassignment process will be directed at reassigning members who belong to inactive chartered lodges to active chartered lodges.

“Inactive lodges will be determined on the basis of reviews and consideration by directors and management,” says President/CEO Vanicek. “Lodges which experience a reassignment of membership will remain in inactive status for a period of five years from the time of reassignment. At some point during this 60-month period, the Executive Committee and/or local membership may find it practical to “reorganize” the lodge.

An exciting prospect

Bringing lodge members together by merger or reassignment is only part of the equation says President/CEO Vanicek. “SPJST leadership believes that the key to any successful lodge revitalization initiative includes reestablishing an identity and clear purpose for the lodge in the community. “It isn’t enough to say a lodge has to meet regularly,” says President/CEO Vanicek, adding, “That’s selling our lodge system short. The process must also be about creating a vision – setting a direction for where the members want to take the lodge and then communicating that message to the members and to the community.”

District directors will be directly involved along with Home Office support teams in working with local lodge officers in planning, promoting, and advancing SPJST revitalization initiatives.

Fraternalism – at its best – seeks to build new relationships. With new relationships comes vitality, adventure, and the freedom to strive, compete, and create. “A good place to start is by looking at what could be gained by cultivating closer camaraderie between the members of sister lodges and even units of our sister fraternal organizations in

any given area,” says President/CEO Vanicek. “We can complement each other.”

“What are some of the benefits we could expect to achieve? How about new and exciting activities and programs based on common interests; group purchasing discounts; joint-sponsorship of community service and cultural projects; and a heightened awareness of SPJST, perhaps resulting in an increase in active membership.”

Volunteering has been shown to generate both direct and indirect positive benefits. A 2018 University of Maryland study establishes that volunteering helps strengthen communities and also helps the volunteers themselves. What’s more, the study reports that volunteers are more likely to stay stronger emotionally, mentally, and physically, especially as they age. Volunteering also encourages other types of civic participation, discourages antisocial behavior, and promotes socioeconomic achievement benefits for the volunteers and indirect

benefits for their communities. Volunteers also help to build a community’s social capital by working together with their neighbors, finding ways to cooperate and compromise, and becoming more aware and understanding of each of our differences. Through behaviors such as volunteering with organizations, Americans ultimately construct ties, relationships, and bonds of trust with others.

“To stay relevant and valuable, SPJST lodges must understand their community’s needs and what behaviors and deliverables will drive future success,” says President/CEO Vanicek. “We’re also encouraging lodge leaders to broaden the bases of our active lodges. That means reaching out to existing members. It also means inviting the participation of friends and family members who are not yet members to join in the planning and hosting of lodge and community activities and events. It’s exciting!”

It’s Your Life

Don’t Die in Your Nest

A mother eagle gets her eaglets out of the nest and lets them learn to fly. The day comes when every person must leave the security of the nest and pursue their destiny. However, I’ve known people who never come out of their nest. They always have an excuse for why they haven’t accomplished anything or why they’ve been hindered from fulfilling a dream.

Don’t die in your nest. Get out and live the life God has intended for you. Only you can live it. God needs you to live it. You need to live it.

Ours is an interesting culture where everyone wants to live a long time, but nobody wants to get old. Longevity, however, should not be our primary life purpose. It’s easy to live a long life, at least in America. Look at the United States Department of Health and Human Services statistics. Out of every 1,000 persons, 94 percent reach 50 years of age, more than 77 percent make it to age 70, and another 40 percent live to 85 or longer. Lots of people live a long time, but the important thing is what do they do with that time. Rather, we should be concerned with giving a significance and value to all our years.

Most of the products we buy at the grocery store have expiration dates. Anyone who has ever had a glass of milk after the date on the container knows it’s important to pay attention to the date stamped on the package. None of us knows our life expiration date, but we all can be certain that it is coming. Since we

know this is true, how should we approach the days God has given us? How many days have you lived, and what have you done with those days?

Young Ruby Bridges was chosen at the age of six to integrate New Orleans’s elementary schools. She had lived only about 2,200 days (about 6 years, 10 days) before showing the world the faith of a child as she marched innocently to school amid racist chants. Anne Frank lived only 5,700 days (about 15 years, 222 days), but the diary she wrote about the days in isolation during World War II would touch the world. Martin Luther King lived only 14,300 (about 39 years, 62 days). But he changed history during those 39 years.

Our lives are a series of days, one after another. Each day is an opportunity to either seize Destiny’s invitation or pass it by. Take advantage of the opportunity to live and use that life to influence others.

The month of February is known for the SPJST State Tarok Tournament. On Saturday, February 4, 2023, a total of 34 players turned out for the tournament held at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. All players were eager to begin the tournament. However, due to very foggy weather, we started the tournament at 9:30 a.m. I was relieved that our players made it safely to Temple.

All players enjoyed coming to Temple again to play taroks. Based on the responses that we received from the players, the SPJST Home Office is a great place to play taroks! Of the 34 players who participated in the six-round tournament, seven were SPJST members. We had players from the Dallas/Fort Worth area, South Texas, and from the Central Texas area.

Players enjoyed kolaches in the morning, a warm lunch after the third round of games, and snacks and desserts in the afternoon.

High round winners were:

Round 1—John Vrana (229 points)

Round 2—Janice Heinrich (210 points)

Round 3—Travis Mixon (210 points)

Round 4—Sonny Klepac (195 points)

Round 5—David Kucera (204 points)

Round 6—Victor Marek (239 points)

Plaque and money winners were:

1st - David Kucera (821 points)

2nd - Travis Mixon (813 points)

3rd - John Vrana (733 points)

4th - Joe Cernoch (727 points)

Thanks to the tournament players from across the state who made the 2023 SPJST State Tarok Tournament a success. Tammy and I enjoyed being your tournament hosts for the day. We will see you at the next SPJST State Tarok Tournament on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at the SPJST Home Office in Temple.

Lodge 133, San Antonio hosts Christmas party

Since our meeting at the VFW Hall was only scheduled for two hours, the officers decided it would be best to have lunch before the meeting. Lodge 81, Needville hosts Fort Bend County Czech Heritage Society Soup Tasting

Friday, February 3, 2023 • Lodge 81 Hall

Lodge 81, Needville was the site for the Fort Bend County Czech Heritage Society soup tasting fundraiser on Friday, February 3, 2023, with 275 attendees. The M&M Playboys provided polka favorites. Delicious soups enjoyed by all included broccoli-

serts were provided by members.

After lunch and some time to mingle, the president called the meeting to order. All officers were present. Secretary-Treasurer Vicki Reese read the minutes which were approved as read by Ken Reese. President Popp asked the treasurer to read the list of donations during the year.

President Popp informed the members that Honorary District Seven Director Bob Bayer had passed away. The members agreed to make a $50 donation to the SPJST Scholarship Fund in his memory. A $100 donation was made to the food bank to help the less fortunate.

The meeting was then turned over to District Seven Director Regina House. Regina reminded everyone that Lodge 133 was still looking for new officers and a new meeting site. The VFW is a beautiful place to meet. However, many of our members are unable to manage the stairs to the second floor meeting room. Also, parking is an issue when other groups use the facility. Maria Garcia, an SPJST sales agent and member of Lodge 133, volunteered earlier to check and reported she had five locations to review.

The lodge has been addressing the election of officers for several months. There were no volunteers who were willing to accept the positions. Jarolyn Popp, Vicki Reese, and Kelsey Reese have served the lodge for more than

I want to thank the Lodge 88 Board for working with me for the availability of the kitchen, my kitchen workers, my family, and support from many members and wonderful new friends. Special thank you to District Five Director Bradley Stavinoha for starting the raffle to fund his endowment. It was a great start.

Kitchen crew is Barbara Linney Gonzales, Kenneth and Cindy Mlcak, Lee, Monica, Megan, and Evan Pflughaupt, Dennis Roeder for stopping in to check on us (and being put to work), and Karl Pflughaupt for firing up his smoker for briskets, and myself. Thanks to Michelle Wockenfuss for baking cakes for both the Gun Club meetings and Gun Shows. Recently, we had a great friend donate 10 dozen eggs from her country farm.

Thank you to the Bingo Committee for their donations to the Scholarship fund. Larry (Mr. Bingo Lingo) loved being a bingo caller and always tried to make things interesting for the evening players.

Again, thank you all for helping fund and make the scholarship available to our youth. Larry supported the youth and would have loved to have this honor. He is missed terribly.

How to Acknowledge a Funeral When You Can’t Attend

You don’t always have to be there to show that you care!

While you’d ideally like to be able to attend a funeral in person, this is not always possible due to cost or schedule conflicts. However, there are plenty of other ways to pay your respects to the deceased, even if you are not able to be there for the funeral service itself. If you’re looking to honor the memory of a person who has died in an alternative way, consider these tips:

It’s never too late to send flowers

Sending flowers is a traditional and beautiful way to express your sympathies to the family of the deceased. You can send flowers or a lasting plant or dish garden to the funeral home, to the house of worship where the service will take place, or to the family’s home. Including a thoughtful note on the card is a warm gesture that the family will appreciate.

membered and that they’re not alone in their grief can be helpful. Many times, the funeral home will put these condolences into a small book that will be given to the family at an appropriate time after the service.

Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate!

✦ Dark chocolate has more cacao (the beans that chocolate are made from) and less sugar than other chocolates, so it is considered healthier than milk and white chocolate.

✦ Dark chocolate contains lots of antioxidants that help the cardiovascular system by reducing blood pressure.

✦ Eating dark chocolate widens arteries and promotes healthy blood flow that can prevent the buildup of plaque that can block arteries.

Lodge 196, Houston-West hosted a community dance on Saturday, February 4, 2023, with a valentines theme. The Lonely Road band played all the right songs to really get the dance floor filled. The dance was family-friendly so we had young and young-at-heart enjoying themselves—with people wanting more at closing time. You always want them wanting more because that shows how great the dance was.

A big thanks to all the lodge members and volunteers who gave of their time to make this a fun time for everyone. Keep checking the Vestnik or our Facebook page - SPJST Lodge 196 - for the date of the next dance. Come and join the fun!

Sign the online guestbook

As people, we have become very used to email and other electronic means for sending messages. Online condolences are often saved and read multiple times by loved ones and friends of the deceased. When someone is feeling blue, it’s comforting to reread sympathy messages. Even short sentiments reminding the bereaved that their loved ones are re-

Pay a visit to the family’s home

If you’re close to the family of the deceased but cannot attend the funeral, consider paying a visit to them at their home. It is often helpful to bring them food, as they will likely be drained and not up for cooking. You can also offer to watch any young children who live in the home so that the older relatives can run errands and attend to funeral-related tasks.

If you’re visiting the family’s home just to pay your respects, make it a point to keep your stay short. In some cases, the family of the deceased may feel pressure to entertain you while you’re visiting them, which can become a burden during this period of time. Stay just long enough to offer your sympathies, and then leave the family to spend some time together.

Offer up kind words in a card

If you don’t feel close enough to the family of the person who has passed away to visit them at their home, there are plenty of other ways to express your sympathies. Consider writing a card that offers your condolences and that gives insight about what made the person who died an important part of your life. Families delight in hearing stories about how their loved one helped or inspired others, so these words will be much appreciated during this challenging and grief-filled time.

Make a charitable contribution

If the person who has died was passionate about a particular charity, consider making a donation to this organization in the person’s name. This is an effective way to keep the person’s memory alive, while improving the lives of those in need.

District Youth Counselors Gather at SPJST Home Office

The SPJST Home Office hosted a workshop for District Youth Counselors on Sunday, February 5, 2023, to review Youth Program updates for various activities. Seated in front are, left to right, District Youth Counselors Hannah Kovar (District One), Patsy Koslovsky (District Two), Mary Steinman (District Three), Kristen Jones (District Five), Lisa Bubela (District Six), and April Adkins (District Seven). In back are Vice President of Communications Melanie Zavodny,

If you are unable to attend the funeral, try to be present at the wake if possible. A wake takes place prior to the actual service, and is typically held in the evening. Even if you cannot attend the actual funeral, supporting the family at the wake is an important gesture of respect.

If you are not extremely close with the family, be sure to introduce yourself at the wake, preventing them from having to rack their brain trying to figure out who you are.

Regardless of whether you can attend the funeral service or not, there are plenty of ways to honor the memory of a person who has died, while also providing their family with the support they need during the grieving process.

Valentine’s Day Origins

Valentine’s Day is a bright light in the middle of the winter. Come February 14, sweethearts celebrate their love and affection for one another on this day devoted to happy couples.

The origin of Valentine’s Day has generated much speculation over the years. Most early accounts do not point to heartshaped boxes filled with chocolates. Rather, a few distinctive tales may paint the picture of early Valentine’s Day, and they have nothing to do with stuffed animals or romantic dinners.

Roman Festival

One of the earliest records of the term Valentine’s Day is traced to the Roman festival of Lupercalia, which was a fertility festival. This annual event held on February 15 included animal sacrifices and priests called the Luperci who would take pieces of animal hide and touch it to the foreheads of women in the hopes it would make them more fertile.

Fortunately for the squeamish (and the sacrificial animals), Pope Gelasius I ended Lupercalia and replaced it with St. Valentine’s Day by the end of the fifth century.

Two or Three St. Valentines?

Most people attribute the origins of Valentine’s Day to the holiday’s namesake, St. Valentine. But it seems that Valentine was the surname of a few different individuals. According to history.com, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus.

One Valentine was a priest during the reign of Emperor Claudius II, who decided that single men made better soldiers than those with families or wives. Claudius outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine disagreed with the decree and would perform marriages in secret. Others believe it was St. Valentine of Terni, a bishop beheaded by Claudius II outside of Rome, who was the true namesake.

Yet another Valentine may have been jailed and fell in love with a jailer’s daughter while in prison. He purportedly wrote to her, beginning the first Valentine card or letter tradition. Other stories say the imprisoned Valentine actually was writing to a blind woman he purportedly healed, and signed the note “from your Valentine.”

It is hard to know who is who in regard to the name Valentine, as the stories and the people behind them are used interchangeably. Some historians believe they actually are the same person rather than several Valentines, while others insist there were multiple martyred individuals.

However you slice it, the defiant actions of one or more people named “Valentine” set the course for centuries of romance to follow.

Happy 105th Birthday Alfred Meiske!

February 6, 2023 • S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living • Taylor, Texas

“Some people say I’m lucky. I say I’m blessed.” —Alfred Meiske

T he atmosphere at S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living Center in Taylor, Texas, on Monday afternoon, February 6, 2023, was joyous and jubilant as residents, family members, and staff gathered with Alfred Meiske to celebrate the grand occasion of his 105th birthday.

“105 is really something to celebrate, but I still feel like I’m 18!” a surprised Mr. Meiske shared as he admired the beautiful gold, blue, and white balloon arches and decorations, “a big, pretty” cake, and a table full of refreshments, including homemade cookies that seemed to be his favorite.

“I had no idea about all of this,” he said. “I didn’t expect this and it puts tears in my eyes. I didn’t know I had so many friends.”

Alfred Meiske was born in Taylor, Texas, on February 6, 1918, to William Meiske and Martha L. Ludecke. He was united in marriage to Doris Shroeder Meiske on December 4, 1941. Alfred and Doris were married 74 years until her passing on June 12, 2016.

Mr. Meiske was a farmer, spending his time between Taylor and Round Rock. He also enjoyed many happy years fishing at Lake Granger, hunting in the surrounding areas, and serving on the Board of Directors for Williamson County Grain.

Mr. Meiske currently resides at the S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living Center in Taylor where he is a delight to his fellow residents.

His easygoing attitude attributes to his longevity. “Alfred amazes everyone,” Administrator Larry Beltran said. “He goes outside everyday and sits on the

front porch. He visits with people and is very social. He never has a bad day . . . he’s always in a good mood. It’s always a good day, and he doesn’t get worked up over things.”

Taylor City Council Member Dwayne Ariola presented a special proclamation in celebration of Mr. Meiske’s birthday.

“The city of Taylor is proud to honor Alfred for reaching this milestone of 105 years, and we celebrate his life and his birthday. We wish him peace and prosperity in the coming year.”

Alfred’s family includes daughter Bonnie and son-in-law Kenneth George, grandchildren Brandon and Julianne George of Dehradun, India, and Jalyn and Eric Morris of Georgetown; greatgrandchildren Kyper, Braxton, and Annaliese George of Dehradun, India, and Hudson Morris of Taylor, and many nieces and nephews.

Daughter Bonnie George said she is grateful to Taylor EMS for saving her dad’s life a couple of times. “Dad continues to amaze me every day – he is always reminding me to do things!”

Mr. Meiske was also honored with a family party on Sunday, February 5.

“We had 45 nieces, nephews, greatnieces, and great-nephews. He loved seeing them all. He was excited and enjoyed every minute,” Bonnie shared.

So what is his secret to longevity?

“I have none . . .” he paused “ . . . well, the only secret I have is God will take me when I’ve done everything He has for me to do. God has a few things for me still to do, and I’m going to start tomorrow towards 106.” —SPJST—

Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Showcases Czech Heritage

For multicultural nights at Merriman Park Elementary School on Thursday, January 19, 2023, second grader Winnie Henson proudly shared her Czech heritage.

Winnie gathered up a few Czech items to display. She also wore the Czech costume that her mom had as a little girl. To top it off, Winnie asked her Nana Marlene Clark to help her make kolaches. They made cherry and apricot, and needless to

say, the kolaches were a big hit because all six dozen were gone in no time!

Winnie is the eight-year-old daughter of Miranda and Grant Henson. She is a member of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis.

Great job to Winnie on sharing her Czech heritage - and kolaches - with her classmates and their parents!

Camperships (Camp Scholarships) What are Camperships?

Through the generosity of our donors, SPJST is able to offer camp scholarships (camperships) to individuals and families in financial need. The Campership funds make it possible for children and families to attend camp regardless of their ability to pay.

Donating to Camperships

Will you help us make this the best summer ever for an SPJST camper this year? Lodges and members are encouraged to help youth in need experience a fantastic summer opportunity. There are several ways to give to our campership program: donate online at spjst.org/camp or send your donation to SPJST c/o Summer Camp, PO Box 100, Temple, TX 76503-0100.

Applying for a Campership

Financial assistance is based on the United States poverty guideline. The application form may be found at spjst.org/camp or contact the State Fraternal Director at 254-534-0681. In Memory of Martha Pelzel

Martha Hermena David Pelzel, 85, passed away Friday, December 30, 2022, in Keller, Texas.

Visitation was Friday, January 6 at Thompson’s Harveson and Cole Funeral Home in Fort Worth at 5 p.m. with rosary at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 7 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Pilot Point with Father John Martin officiating. Burial followed in St. Thomas Cemetery.

Martha was born on April 8, 1937, in Pilot Point to parents Joe and Elsie Jezek David and grew up on the family farm. She enjoyed working in her father’s grocery store, David’s Grocery, and meat locker plant. There she learned the value of hard work and interacting with people.

Martha met the love of her life, Johnny, in first grade at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic School. They were sweethearts at Pilot Point Gee High School and voted prospective husband and wife in the yearbook, graduating in 1955. They were married June 22, 1957, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, then moved to Fort Worth.

Martha loved being a wife, mother, and homemaker in every way—cooking, baking, sewing, crocheting, knitting, growing flowers, canning and cooking vegetables from Johnny’s garden, helping others, and always being there for her three children. Their neighborhood on Stephanie Drive in Haltom City became her little slice of smalltown Pilot Point as she loved and cared for every neighbor like family. She was a “social butterfly,” outgoing and kind, who had the gift of easily making friends. People were drawn to her genuineness, her smile, and joyful personality.

Martha was proud of her Czech heritage and of speaking the language flu-

ently. She was excited to experience a trip to the Czech Republic and speak with people there. She and Johnny were members of SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth. They enjoyed many years of polka dancing and good times with friends and family at National Hall.

Martha served on the Altar Society and sang in the choir at St. George Catholic Church in Fort Worth for many years, then later joined St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Keller. She lived out her faith devotedly through her generosity, caring and ministering to others. A cake, a pie, a loaf of homemade bread, a phone call, a visit, a card, flowers, and her prayers comforted many.

Martha’s joy was being with family, her cousins and lifelong friends, celebrating birthdays, holidays, weddings, and anniversaries. She loved doting on her seven grandchildren, cooking for them and watching them participate at their games, activities, and events for school. She enjoyed playing dominoes, cards, and bingo, and gathering monthly with a group of six dear couple friends who called themselves ‘The Birthday Club.’ She and Johnny took many memorable trips throughout the United States, Hawaii, and Europe.

Martha was a model for how God designed the family to be. It was fitting that He called her home on the Feast of the Holy Family.

Martha was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years, Johnny; her parents, Joe and Elsie; sister Lorraine Karl; and brother Terry David.

She is survived by daughter Theresa Thompson (Doug) of Benbrook; son Duane Pelzel (Meg) of Richland Hills; daughter Sharon Thomas (Steve) of North Richland Hills; grandchildren Garrett Thompson, Connor Thompson and fiancee Brooke Pennings, Jordan and Brooks Thomas, and Grace, Faith and Zachary Pelzel; sister Virginia Pelzel and husband Alois of Pilot Point; brother Raymond David and wife Ann of Pilot Point; sister-in-law Monica David of Pilot Point; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Serving as pallbearers were nephews Gregory Pelzel, Glen Pelzel, Ray David, Jayson David, Jeremy David, and Jaxon David.

In Memory of Christine Ventrcek

Christine Mae Ventrcek, 94, passed away on Sunday, January 22, 2023, in Pleasanton, Texas.

Graveside service was Friday, January 27 at Jourdanton City Cemetery at 10 a.m.

Christine was born to George Washington Boeker and Hilda Louise (Baring) Boeker in Milam County in 1928.

They moved to Jourdanton when she was five, and she attended Jourdanton school through the fifth grade. They then moved to Dobrowolski where she attended and graduated from Charlotte High School.

Christine married Johnnie Ventrcek in 1947 and became a housewife and mother. She went to work for Mercy Hospital and was employed there for more than 30 years. When she retired, she moved to Pleasanton Senior Apartments and remained there for 28 years enjoying her many friends, playing bingo, and having potluck meals.

She was a member of SPJST Lodge 202, Jourdanton. Christine received her 75-year membership in 2022.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie Ventrcek; daughter Linda Klaus; sister Melba Novosad; and brother George Boeker.

Christine is survived by son Johnnie Dale (Butch) Ventrcek and wife Ernestine; daughter Sharon Mangum and husband Randy; grandchildren Derek Ventrcek and wife Myra, Jackie Price and husband Eric, Clay Mangum and wife Melissa, Colby Mangum and wife Teressa, and Travis Klaus and fiancé Jessica; 11 great-grandkids; and numerous nieces and nephews. —SPJST—

TCGS to pay tribute to Czech Veterans who gave their life for our freedom

“Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” The quote from John 15:13 is heard quite often as Memorial Day draws close.

Lifetime Member Cecilia Forrest entitled, Definition Of A Veteran:

A veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard, or reserve is

someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a check made payable to the United States of America, for the amount “up to and including my life.” This is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it.

Lubbock Symphony hosts Philharmonic from Czech Republic on February 20

Filharmonie Brno to perform works by Czech composers, including Dvorak.

The Lubbock Symphony Orchestra (LSO) is thrilled to host the first European symphony to visit Lubbock on their international tour! “Lubbock Symphony Presents: Filharmonie Brno” will take place on Monday, February 20, 2023, at 7:30 p.m. at The Buddy Holly Hall of Performing Arts and Sciences.

Led by Music Director Dennis Russell Davies, the prodigious Filharmonie Brno is based in the city of Brno in the Czech Republic and stops in Lubbock on their international tour. The roots of this philharmonic go back to the 1870s when composer Leos Janacek endeavored to establish a Czech symphony orchestra in Brno. The works of the famous twentieth-century composer constitute the core of the orchestra’s repertoire.

This concert will highlight celebrated Czech composers, including Dvorak, and feature a banda ensemble of Lubbock Symphony brass musicians in Janáček’s “Sinfonietta.” Works will include:

• Bohuslav Martinu | Thunderbolt P-47. Scherzo for Orchestra, H. 309

• Leos Janacek | Sinfonietta

• Antonin Dvorak | Symphony No. 8 in

G major, Op. 88, B. 163

LSO Music Director David Cho, “Ever since the completion of The Buddy Holly Hall, Lubbock Symphony looked forward to the opportunity to host an international orchestra. After having the chance to see them perform at their own venue in Brno, I am thrilled to have Filharmonie Brno visit us here in Lubbock. It will be an enlightening experience introducing this phenomenal organization to The Buddy Holly Hall and Texans’ passion for classical music.”

Tickets start at $30. For more information on the concert, call 806-7621688 or visit https://bit.ly/LSOBrno. For more information on Filharmonie Brno, visit https://filharmonie-brno.cz/en/.

The Lubbock Symphony Orchestra (LSO) is one of the oldest community organizations in Lubbock. Founded in 1946, LSO is an integral part of the cultural fabric of the South Plains region and is made up of professional, talented musicians from all parts of the Lubbock Community. The LSO seeks to enhance the community we serve by providing quality symphonic performances and educational experiences for thousands of children across the greater Lubbock area.

Memorial Day is May 29. For the past two years, TCGS has paid tribute to those who paid the Ultimate Sacrifice with a special membership emailing. This email featured those who gave their lives for our freedom while serving our country. Those featured, with name and photo, if a photo was available, are those contained within the pages of our Czechs in Uniform, Volumes I, II and III; or are on our Czech Military Museum and Veterans’ Wall of Honor Ulti-

mate Sacrifice Alcove located in the downstairs gallery of the SPJST Home Office in Temple, Texas. As far as we have been able to determine, TCGS has the largest military museum, dedicated to Czech Veterans in the nation; and for this, we feel honored.

In 2023, TCGS will take our tribute up and beyond to the next level to honor those who gave their lives for our freedom. We can do this only with your support. How? By submitting your Czech

Veteran’s name and photo. Your veteran only needs “one drop” of Czech blood to qualify. This veteran could be your dad, husband, wife, brother, sister, distant relative, or acquaintance. Their lives were unfinished. They left empty places in our hearts; but their lives are not forgotten. United by our bond of Czech heritage that highly prizes freedom, may we continue to stand against freedom’s enemies so that they will not have died in vain.

This tribute is not for TCGS members only; but for all Czechs. Please send the name, photo, date of birth and death, if known, of your Czech Veteran who gave his or her life to: Charlene Hurta at cmhurta@earthlink.net; or mail to Charlene at 1231 CR 201A, Angleton, Texas 77515. If you have an email address, please include it if you are mailing the photo in order that we may make sure you receive notification of the link to our recording paying Tribute to Czech Veterans’ Who Paid the Ultimate Sacrifice Tribute beginning the week of May 22, 2023. I am German . . . it’s kind of like everyone is Irish on Saint Patrick’s Day . . . except down there, we celebrate Czech Days the first weekend of August in Wilber for like the last, ‘forever.’ Forty thousand people can’t be wrong.”

Nebraska bill would add Czech Heritage to list of specialty license plates

A southeast Nebraska State Senator has introduced a bill to create a Czech heritage license plate in Nebraska. Senator Tom Brandt of Plymouth represents District 32, which has a large contingent of Czech descendants in the Saline County part of the district.

“We’re very fortunate to have many ways to celebrate Czech heritage and culture year-round in Nebraska . . . with the August Czech Days in Wilber being among the most popular. Whether you participate in Czech culture by eating a kolache, or drinking a pivo . . . Czech heritage is an integral part of Nebraska history.”

LB 140 would establish a Czech heritage license plate to be designed by the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles with the assistance of the Czech Heritage Consul in Nebraska. Brandt’s bill was before the legislature’s Transportation and Telecommunications Committee on Monday, January 23 . . . as committee hearings kicked off for this 90-day session.

The plate would cost $5 . . . $40, if personalized. The money from the plates would go into the DMV cash fund. Brandt says the idea for the license plate bill was suggested by Linda Taborek of the Czech Language Foundation and by Saline County Treasurer Deb Spanyers. https://southeast.newschannelnebraska.com/story/482201 38/a-kolachea-pivoand-a-platelicense-plate-that-is —SPJST—
