My beautiful Aunt Vallie Zavodny joined Uncle Leon in their new heavenly home on November 1, 2022. Uncle Leon passed on August 13. They were my very last aunt and uncle, and we all miss them so much. It’s bittersweet because I know they are all celebrating together with the family and friends already in heaven. My cousins are close in thought and prayer as we navigate these holidays without our loved ones.
Congratulations to the winners of the “125 Prizes for 125 Years” drawing that was held on Friday, November 18 - live from the SPJST Home Office in Temple. A list of prizewinners appears on page 4 of this week’s Vestnik. Winners are in the process of being contacted, and arrangements are being made for prize delivery/pick-up.
Special thanks to each person who purchased a ticket/tickets for the drawing. We appreciate you and your support. And, thank you to those who donated prizes for the drawing.

TEMPLE, TEXAS – “SPJST’s investment income and annuity program enabled the Society to post strong operating results through the quarter ending September 30, 2022,” said SPJST President/CEO Brian Vanicek. Investment income increased 20 percent to $9.383 million compared to $7.812 million a year ago. Insurance premiums and annuity deposits increased 60 percent to $19.184 million compared to $11.956 million a year ago.
“SPJST’s annuity pro gram is on track for a good year as risk-averse individuals appear to have steered in our di rection, away from the volatility of the stock market,” says Vanicek. Correspondingly, SPJST’s sustained increase in investment returns enabled the Society to increase interest rates on its annuity plans in October. “That trend could continue if the Federal Reserve continues raising its benchmark interest rate,” says Vanicek.
Net income for the nine-month period ending September 30 remained flat at $80,657. “With the dramatic increase in annuity sales, it was necessary for SPJST to set aside ample reserves to guard the security of these member investments,” says Vanicek.
“Excellent progress has also made year-to-date in executing the strategy of investing in digital tools for frontline workers and sales agents to modernize workflows, and improve workplace culture and communication,” says Vanicek.
In 2022, SPJST began what is expected to be a three-year data migration and conversion process to the cloudbased Oracle Insurance Policy Administration software. Also, in 2022, illustrate inc, a powerful cloud-based insurance quoting and illustration software platform was introduced to SPJST sales agents, providing them with needs analysis tools and the ability to complete and submit applications for new certificates online.
Overall, SPJST assets increased to $261.932 million through the end of the third quarter, a 4.4 percent increase from
the $250.843 million recorded at year-end 2021. SPJST’s unallocated surplus declined slightly to $13.108 million, down from $13.225 recorded at year-end 2021. More than $849,000 in expenditures on software for the first nine months contributed to the decrease. Death benefits paid for the first nine months of 2022 were $4.536 million, up from the $4.090 million paid over the same year-to-date period in 2021. SPJST dispersed annuity benefits totaling $9.667 million for the first nine months of 2022, up from the $6.311 million dispersed over the same year-to-date period in 2021.
“On the fraternal front — that’s where our lodges and organization reach out to communities to make a positive difference – our watchword was “relevancy” — doing those things that bring substance to the SPJST fraternal mission,” says Vanicek.
Local lodges sponsored a wide range of family-oriented events, including community service projects and recreational activities. Additionally, the Home Office regularly partnered with lodges and other organizations on special events, including parades and festivals. As of September 30, there are 38,000 SPJST members in 102 lodges throughout Texas. “Since its inception, SPJST members have worked diligently to establish the Society’s reputation as a proactive, nonsectarian fraternal organization,” says Vanicek.
SPJST marked its 125th anniversary on October 15 with a grand celebration at the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange. An exciting new chapter in SPJST’s history is being written as SPJST continues to fulfill its financial obligations to its members and keep pace with the life insurance industry.
“Through the SPJST Home Office and in lodges all over the state, men, women, boys, and girls are committing their time and energy to supporting worthwhile causes,” says Vanicek. “They are taking the best that SPJST has to offer — a tradition of helping people to care for their families – and are extending these values to their communities.”

You have to admire Booker T. Washington. He was truly an amazing man. An African-American man born into slavery just nine years before emancipation, he accomplished so much against tremendous odds. He was a teacher, author, speaker, and advisor to American presidents. He was astute at politics and knew how to manipulate the media of the late 19th century, which enabled him to raise money and network, allowing him to advance his cause – to end the disenfranchisement of other fellow African Americans. During his lifetime, Booker T. Washington wrote 14 books, the most popular of which, and still read today, was his autobiography – “Up from Slavery.”
You will get little argument to say that through his work, he was able to teach blacks how to live self-reliant lives, all the while making enemies on both sides. You see, whites hated him for helping the newly emancipated slaves, and blacks hated him for being too accommodating to the whites.
But Mr. Washington didn’t let that control his life. You see, he was a Christian man and set a wonderful example for all. When you think about it, his life was much like the apostle Peter who worked to guide Jesus’ followers through their own persecution to live the life that God planned for them. I can imagine him standing in front of you and delivering our focus this month.
1 Peter 3:9 – Do not repay evil for evil. Do not retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will grant you, his blessing.
Just think about all the evil that must have been thrust on this great American. Then think about how we would react if faced with the same. Granted, the slings
and arrows that fall upon us are not nearly as outrageous as his must have been, but we are constantly bombarded with incivilities, if not full-frontal attacks.
How do you react when somebody insults you on Facebook? When your coworker spreads rumors about you to others? When your competitor lies about you or your company? When your neighbor talks behind your back?
It’s natural to retaliate in these situations. But, what if we took Peter’s words to heart, and instead of returning evil, we paid back a blessing? Mr. Washington did just that, and that is what allowed him to be great.
One my favorite quotes of his is, “I will permit no man to narrow and degrade my soul by making me hate him.” He understood that when we hate others, we only diminish ourselves. It reduces our ability to live the life that God intended for us.
How much better would our lives be if we followed his good example?
So, the next time your neighbor’s car alarm goes off at 3 a.m. . . . the next time there is no more coffee because someone took the last cup . . . the next time the person parked next to you dings your car getting out . . . the next time someone eats your food out of the refrigerator . . .
Do what Booker T Washington would do. Focus on Peter’s admonition and repay that person with a blessing.
You’ll feel better about it.
“Whenever anyone has offended me, I try to raise my soul so high that the offense cannot reach it.”
—Rene DescartesMy door is always open; figuratively and literally.
Stay blessed, Delisle L. Doherty Vice President of Sales and Marketing 832-232-2049

I hope that everyone had a nice Thanksgiving and is getting ready for Christmas. It will be upon us in no time!
I express appreciation and gratitude to our members who have worked hard in 2022 and met in person at lodge meetings and socials. We face many challenges in 2023. We need to make every effort to invite our members back to live meetings and socials. The lodges must make it a habit to record both fraternal and community volunteer hours on at least a quarterly basis.
These hours are reviewed by our government representatives, and this is how we keep our tax exemption. SPJST members must make every effort to volunteer more in our communities and with other organizations.
Lodges, please complete your officer elections in December and read carefully through the following information that your lodge officers need to complete to receive the 2022 Lodge Enhanced Premium Refund. An important update appears on page 8. Please review
this to see what your lodge still needs to submit prior to the deadline on January 15, 2023.
Lodge Officers, this is very important for your lodge. This information must be turned in to the Home Office no later than January 15, 2023. If the below information is not completed, then your lodge will forfeit its enhanced premium refund.

State Charitable Raffle Information
Lodges that host fundraisers and raffles during the year, please take note of this important information. I urge you to read Attorney General of Texas Ken Paxton’s information that he has prepared about charitable raffles. This link (https://www.texasattorneygeneral.gov/ divisions/charitable-trusts/charitableraffles-and-casinopoker-nights) includes information about “Charitable Raffles and Casino/Poker Nights” from Office of the Attorney General. Below are excerpts from the website:
The Charitable Raffle Enabling Act (“CREA”) permits “qualified organizations” to hold up to four raffles per calendar year, with certain specified restrictions. The language of the law is very technical, and the two types of raffles have different rules and regulations. If your organization is considering holding a raffle, you should check the statutes to be sure that your raffle qualifies.
HB 2757, effective June 15, 2021, amended the Charitable Raffle Enabling Act to increase the allowable value of each purchased prize from $50,000 to $75,000 and the allowable number of raffles that may be held per calendar year from two to four.
CREA defines a raffle as “the award of one or more prizes by chance at a single occasion among a single pool or group of persons who have paid or promised a thing of value for a ticket that represents a chance to win a prize.”
Under CREA, only a qualified religious society that has been in existence in Texas for at least 10 years; a qualified volunteer fire department that operates
Under CREA, all proceeds from raffles must be used for the charitable purposes of the organization as defined by CREA 2002.002(1).
Can I advertise and sell tickets on the Internet?
CREA states that the organization may not promote or advertise a raffle statewide, other than on the organization’s website or through a publication or solicitation, including a newsletter, social media, or email, provided only to previously identified supporters of the organization. Selling or offering to sell tickets statewide is prohibited. The term statewide has not been defined or interpreted in any known court proceeding or Attorney General Opinion, but it is generally thought that statewide would include the Internet.
What must be printed on the tickets?
Under CREA, the following five items must be on each ticket:
The name of the organization conducting the raffle.
The address of the organization or of a named officer of the organization.
The ticket price.
A general description of each prize having a value of more than $10 to be awarded in the raffle.
The date on which the raffle prize or prizes will be awarded.
Under CREA, cash prizes are strictly prohibited. “Money” is defined by CREA as “coins, paper currency, or a negotiable instrument that represents and is readily convertible to coins or paper currency.” See 2002.002(1-a). A certificate of deposit is a prohibited prize. A U.S. savings bond and a prepaid, or “stored value,” credit card is not
Do I need to have the prize on hand at the time of the drawing?
CREA states that the organization must have the prize in its possession or ownership or it must post a bond with the county clerk of the county in which the raffle is to be held for the full amount of the money value of the prize.
Lodges, youth clubs, and members at-large across the state are encouraged to participate in statewide charity projects in 2023. We will host one project for each quarter of the year. Stay tuned to the Vestnik for more details as we move through the year.
Lodges, youth clubs, individuals, families, and friends are asked to collect and donate items in your local community, take photos of the donations, and submit the photos to the Vestnik and post on social media using #spjst
January through March Souper Bowl
Collect and donate soup to your local food bank.
April through June Paws for a Cause
Collect and donate supplies for your local animal shelter.
July through September Back-to-School Supply Drive
Collect and donate school supplies for your local school.
October through December Socks for Seniors
Collect and donate socks for local nursing homes and senior centers.
I want to reassure our members that SPJST is financially sound. The recent changes and updates to the youth program have nothing to do with finances. In youth program data collected since 2008, youth participation in the SPJST Youth Program has shown a steady decline. We have many less youth clubs across the state and many less youth participating in the program. For example, in 2005, we had 53 active youth clubs. Today, we have 23 youth clubs. Another fact - in 2008, more than 600 youth were involved in youth clubs across the state. In 2022, about 250 youth are involved. With the current participation numbers, the separate district events that we have
In the 19th Century, a Christmas tree appeared for the first time in the Czech Lands. Traditional Czech Christmas trees were decorated using unique ideas, shapes, and materials. Many of the decorations had symbolism. Decorate the tree below using the decoration/symbolism guide.

Silver and gold garlands were added to the tree as they became available.
Gingerbread cookies, cut in the shapes of Wise Men, stars, bells, and fish, were decorated with colored icing.

In the days of no electricity, clipon candle holders held candles that were small, round, and the thickness of a pencil Candles were placed from the top to about halfway down the tree so small children could not reach them. The candles were lit with a match for a short time, usually at night, by the parents who watched so a fire would not start and burn the house down. As the candles burned on the tree, the nighttime prayers were said. Christmas carols were sung when guests visited.
hosted in the past, are, unfortunately, no longer justified. Clearly, we must do something different if there has been a decline over the past 15 years.
The changes that we shared last month are challenging for all of us, but these changes were carefully considered and are inline with other fraternals and service organizations like SPJST. Just as our ancestors faced challenges and changes when they left family in Czechoslovakia to come to the United States, we will prevail and our program will continue.
I do want to thank the leaders and parents who contacted me and gave me positive feedback and understanding about the changes.
In August, Tammy emailed all youth leaders the 2023 quarterly reports. The first quarter is for September through
November and will be due no later than Thursday, December 15. All youth clubs should be meeting now.
Hey, teens and youth! I want you to save the date and get excited about SPJST Camp in 2023. It will be a fournight/five-day camp, starting Wednesday, June 21 through Sunday, June 25. The teen camp and junior camp will be running simultaneously. Teens will have their program separately from the junior campers. All youth will have meals together, but when it comes to the blob, high ropes, special activities, and pool time, that will be separate. Teens will also have their own cabins. Teens and juniors will enjoy the dance and some social time together, too.
The new State Youth Showcase will
be held in Temple, Texas. Save these dates - It will be a two-day get-together on Friday, July 28 and Saturday, July 29. We are working through the details of this new event and will soon present this to our youth leadership. Special Category will be back for all youth! And, Friday evening will be a special event for all families to gather and enjoy visiting before the end of the summer.
The 2023 SPJST Scholarship season continues through February 1, 2023. Graduating high school seniors and college undergraduates are encouraged to apply for an SPJST scholarship. Please see the online application at this link spjst.org/scholarships for details on eligibility and completing the application. If you have any questions, please contact Sandra at 254-773-1575 ext. 127.

Dear Members, Lodge 4, Hallettsville met Sunday, November 13, 2022, at the Hallettsville Chamber of Commerce Meeting Room at 3 p.m.
President Joe Siptak called in and was on a speaker phone to be at the meeting. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.
The members voted to make a donation to St. Nicholas Ministry. They reach out and help needed persons of Lavaca County at Christmas.
Secretary-Treasurer Helen Zabransky read the minutes to the last meeting and gave the financial report.
Nancy Obelgoner with St. Nicholas Ministry arrived and gave us an interesting and informative program on the ministry that has been serving Lavaca County for 35 years. FAC/Vice President Annie Vahalik presented Ms. Obelgoner with a contribution from the lodge to support the wonderful work they are doing.
FAC Annie gave her report. Our Walk Across Texas team is doing great and has one more week to go. She reported on the successful SPJST 125th Anniversary Celebration and the Cars & Guitars event at Camp Kubena. She also reported on some of the changes in the
youth program. Being November, Annie recognized and thanked Veteran Alton Chudej for his services.
Officers were elected with all present officers being re-elected.
Final plans were made for the Christmas party to be held Sunday, December 11 at the Vsetin Educational Building beginning at 11:30 a.m. with registration. A meal will be served with fried chicken provided by the lodge with members bringing side dishes and desserts. A mailout will be sent to members. Bingo will be played, and door prizes will be awarded.
Dates were set for our 2023 meetings: February 12, June 11, August 13, and November 12 with the Christmas party on December 10.
The meeting adjourned. Door prize winners were Aline Steffek, Alton Chudej, and Patsy Zabransky.
FAC Annie led the members in an entertaining game of “Making a Pumpkin Pie” using the ingredients written on playing cards. Aline Steffek was the winner.
Lunch was served, and everyone enjoyed visiting.
Make plans to attend the Christmas party on Sunday, December 11 and get in the Christmas spirit! Fraternally, Patsy Zabransky, Reporter —SPJST—

Rome was a member of SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth and as an avid gymnastics historian over the years, he graciously and proudly displayed pieces from his vast collection at USA Gymnastics’ annual National Congress, United States Championships, and International Gymnastics Hall of Fame events.
Rome was introduced to gymnastics through family ties to Sokol, a gymnastics organization of Czech origin. He was a fourthgeneration lifetime Sokol member and served as the American Sokol Southern District Director of Men, beginning in 1985. He was also active on the Sokol Awards Committee and Sokol Museum and Library Committee as well.
A former captain of the University of Texas men’s gymnastics team, Rome followed his family into coaching and judg-
ing. Between 1982 and 2000, he coached gymnastics in Texas at Weatherford High School, then Boswell High School – qualifying teams to the state championships 14 out of 18 years and winning a Texas state championship along the way. Rome remained active in the gymnastics community even after he was diagnosed with ALS.
In addition to being a Brevetrated judge, Rome was an active volunteer and worked in various roles across numerous international competitions, including the Pan American Games, Goodwill Games, World Championships and Olympic Games. He served on the USA Gymnastics Board of Directors until 2018. Rome passed away on April 23, 2021. He is survived by parents Jerry and Henrietta; wife Pauline; and children Paris, Sydney, and Athens - all three of whom are named after Olympic cities. The International Gymnastics Hall of Fame is proud to recognize Rome with this 2022 Special Recognition Award for his contributions to the sport he loved.
Pauline Milan, wife of the late Rome Milan, accepts the 2022 Special Recognition Award in Rome’s honor.

“Wake” up; there’s a difference!
by Sabrina N. Young, CFSP SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Member and Owner of Young’s Daughters Funeral Home and Bereavement Center
Paying tribute to your loved one may take on many different forms. Catholic families may choose to hold a rosary service, while other Christian denominations may opt for a wake. Depending on the background and preference of the deceased, as well as that of their grieving loved ones, there may be a rosary service or wake planned to accompany the funeral.
In Catholic tradition, praying the rosary is a multiple-step process, including praying many well-known prayers. They include the Apostles’ Creed, the Hail Mary, the Lord’s Prayer, and the Glory Be to the Father. In some cases, it may also include the Fatima Prayer.
The rosary service is traditionally a Catholic funeral rite that is held in the
evening prior to the burial of a loved one. This service is open to anyone wishing to commemorate the deceased. The family will use this time to pray the rosary and receive visitors. The ritual may be held during a vigil service or wake.
These events are typically held the evening prior to a burial. They are used to offer condolences to the grieving family and share memories of the person who has passed. Such services are frequently held at a funeral home, as they often include a viewing of the deceased. However, they were traditionally held at the home of the person who has passed.
The term “wake” originally referred to a nighttime prayer vigil. But modernly, it is used to refer to the social interactions and gathering that accompany a funeral. A wake or vigil is considered a social right, which recognizes that the loss of a person greatly impacts the group as a whole.
When preparing to honor a loved one who has passed, it is important to know what to expect of services. Consider the religious or faith background of the person who has passed, as well as that of the remaining family. Be respectful of their preferences, and consider these differences when commemorating and remembering the deceased.

Veterans’ Day, November 11, 2022, and what a day this has turned out to be. Cold and rainy and getting colder as I am writing this. I watched the Veterans being honored on the television, and as usual, it made me cry.
I then thought of the song that Alan Jackson wrote, “Remember When?” shortly after our World Trade Centers were taken down by “terrorists” in 2001. I was at work that day and my coworkers were all women that were younger than me. We were fortunate to have access to a television and saw the devastation that was taking place. I said that it was a terrorist attack, and all the other ladies told me ‘no, it was an accident.’ I tried to be like the Mother Hen and help them to understand that no trained pilot would deliberately fly into a building. I think they began to understand when they witnessed the second plane flying into the other tower. My daughter was working for the Pilots Association when this event took place, and she had a very difficult duty of having to make contact with some of the families.
We, as a Nation, that has always given and been supportive of other countries and their needs was brought to our knees on that day. It is difficult to comprehend that such a horrific disaster could humble us so much.
Before this disaster, we went through the Korean war, and I am sorry to say, that I don’t really have a keen understanding what brought that on or why, but I do know that it brought a lot of hard feelings to the surface. I do know that any of the Veterans who served dur-
ing that time were not honored or praised.
And, of course, even going back further into history, we have World War II. That was another time of devastation to our country or nation. I don’t actually remember the bombing of Pearl Harbor, as I was only four years old, but I do remember some of the horrific events that happened during that time frame.
We had a savings book that we put little stamps into. Each stamp was called a “ration stamp” and was worth 10 cents. That was our contribution to the war effort. I was never able to get a full book as Mother needed what few stamps I had to buy necessities for our home. During this time of rationing, gasoline was very difficult to obtain, as well as sugar as I am sure that many other items were rationed as well. We as a nation did not have access to items that were deemed necessary to support the “war effort.” I remember a friend of our family that was so disturbed about the rationing and his inability to purchase some gasoline that he took his own life. {I guess he didn’t think about his wife that he left alone.} Also, another family was basically robbed of a father/husband as he took his own life because he did not feel the need to serve in the military. Such a loss.
My grandmother and grandfather {Mama and Papa} didn’t have to suffer with the rationing as much as others because of their farming efforts. All efforts to assist the war did not limit or restrict the farmers.
My grandmother had a
gold star in her (front room) living room. It was there to indicate that they had a son in the service.
I remember the talk about “draft dodgers.” These were the people that went to the seminary or started teaching or fled to Canada as they did not want to participate in the war,
I don’t know what year it was, but my daddy went to Pearl Harbor to help with the reconstruction after the bombing on December 7, 1941. That was another devastation to our country. I wrote a lot of letters to Daddy, and Mother faithfully put them into the letters that she wrote to him. Daddy tried to send us a coconut from Hawaii, but it did not make to us. It rotted enroute. However, he was able to send us a coconut later, and I still have that coconut hull. Since it has totally dried up, I actually spray painted a clear sheen on it and that old relic looks pretty.
I said at the beginning of my writing that I always cried when the Veterans are talking about their service time, when I hear “God Bless America” or the “StarSpangled Banner.” And I have a hard time hearing “Taps.” I guess that I am considered an ol’ soul.
I am going to close this with some pictures as well as the picture of the ship that was constructed with the metal from the Twin Towers.
We as a country will go on and honor our men and women that serve to help protect all of us. God bless all of our military!

The instantly recognizable “Jingle Bells” has become a wildly popular Christmas carol despite not mentioning Christmas or any other holiday. Written by New England native James Lord Pierpont, “Jingle Bells” is commemorated with plaques in two different cities, each of which claims to be the place where Pierpont wrote the song in the 1850s. One plaque is in Medford, Massachusetts, where Pierpont is said to have written the song from a tavern while watching sleigh races taking place outside. The other plaque is in Savannah, Georgia, where locals believe Pierpont wrote the lyrics prior to leading a sing-along of the song at a local church in 1857.
“Jingle Bells” (Extended version)
Dashing through the snow In a one-horse open sleigh O’er the fields we go Laughing all the way
Bells on bobtail ring Making spirits bright What fun it is to ride and sing A sleighing song tonight! Oh,
Jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way, Oh what fun it is to ride In a one-horse open sleigh. Hey!
Jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way, Oh what fun it is to ride In a one-horse open sleigh.
A day or two ago I thought I’d take a ride And soon, Miss Fanny Bright Was seated by my side, The horse was lean and lank Misfortune seemed his lot He got into a drifted bank And then we got upsot.
Jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way, Oh what fun it is to ride In a one-horse open sleigh. Hey!
Jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way, Oh what fun it is to ride In a one-horse open sleigh.
A day or two ago, The story I must tell I went out on the snow, And on my back I fell; A gent was riding by In a one-horse open sleigh, He laughed as there I sprawling lie, But quickly drove away.
Jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way, Oh what fun it is to ride In a one-horse open sleigh.
Jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way, Oh what fun it is to ride In a one-horse open sleigh.
Now the ground is white Go it while you’re young, Take the girls tonight and sing this sleighing song; Just get a bobtailed Two forty as his speed Hitch him to an open sleigh And crack! you’ll take the lead.
Jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way, Oh what fun it is to ride In a one-horse open sleigh.
Jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way, Oh what fun it is to ride In a one-horse open sleigh.

Millions of people across the globe feel that the holiday season is a magical time of year. Though those people come from all walks of life, it’s likely that no group is as taken by the unique spirit of the holiday season as much as children.
Whether they’re looking forward to Santa’s arrival or preparing for a school holiday pageant, kids have much to be excited about come December. Parents can channel that enthusiasm by involving kids when decorating around the house this holiday season.

Our youth club donated pull tabs to the Ronald McDonald House. My family and I had been saving pull tabs for probably three years, and we had two milk jugs full. The lady at the House was really nice and showed us around. She talked about how they are able to help families with kids who are in the hospital. I’m glad that we were able to do something to help raise money for them.

Many celebrants cannot imagine a holiday season without gingerbread houses and cookies. These traditions provide another great opportunity to involve children in holiday decorating. Set aside some time to make homemade gingerbread houses, which can be used as decorations before they’re ultimately eaten. Cookies may not have the shelf life of a typical gingerbread house, but kids can pitch in and decorate cookies prior to a holiday party or family meal.
The spirit of the holiday season can be seen on the faces of children each December. Inviting kids to pitch in when decorating for the holidays can make the season even more special for its youngest celebrants. (MS)

Originating in ancient Egypt, beer is almost as old as civilization itself. In medieval times, monks brewed beer for a nourishing drink, which was permitted while fasting. Considered a valuable source of nutrition, beer played such an important role in daily lives that workers were often paid with jugs of beer. The brewing of beer is considered by many to be the oldest manufacturing art practiced by man. The history of beer in the modern Czech Republic, historically Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia, goes back even before the Slavic migration in the 6th century, although the ingredients differed from those used today. Hops have been grown, used in beer making and exported from the Czech lands since the twelfth century. Most towns had at least one brewery, the most famous brewing cities in Bohemia being Budweis, Plzen, and Prague. South Morava is known for winemaking and there are only few large breweries in this region. With over forty industrial breweries and seventy small and medium-sized family breweries in the Czech Republic, beer is one of the most important and well-known exports in the Czech Republic.
Because of the Monarch Butterfly’s life cycle, from egg to caterpillar to butterfly, it is a symbol of transformation and rebirth. Sighting monarch butterflies often signifies upcoming changes and a new direction in life. Monarch Butterflies are also considered as inspirational creatures, due to their extreme strength and the endurance needed for their 2500 mile journey every year from Canada where they breed to Mexico where they hibernate.
The Legend of the CHRISTmas Stocking No. CW-1021 - $18
Perhaps one of the bestknown renditions relating to the legend of the CHRISTmas stocking is the one surrounding Saint Nicholas of Bari who was born a nobleman in 280 A.D. in Turkey. Nicholas lost his parents at an early age, and it is reported that he used his inheritance to help the poor and sick. As the story goes, a poor widower living in the 4th century A.D. had three unwed daughters. The family had lost all of their money and the old man feared that his daughters would not be able to marry without dowries. Residents of his village shared his story with St. Nicholas. Knowing the man would not take charity; Nicholas snuck into the house using the chimney and filled the girls’ stockings drying by the fire with gold coins.
The next morning, the family was ecstatic to find the gold in the stockings! The father now had dowries so his girls could marry well and he would not be alone and poor in his old age. This folk tale has a very wonderful message: be kind to those less fortunate.
Infant Jesus of Prague Nos. OR-210 and OR-212 - $21 each
These unique Infant of Prague ornaments, mouth blown and hand painted in the Czech Republic depict Jesus as a young child, regally dressed in a colorful tunic. One ornament has him wearing a red robe and crown (OR210) and one has him wearing a red and white robe and crown (OR-212). Filled with symbolism, Jesus holds a miniature globe in his left hand, signifying His world-wide reign.
Wreath No. OR-204 - $15
The wreath symbolizes the eternal nature of love – never ceasing and never ending. It is one continuous round of affection. Because they are circular in shape, symbolizing eternity, the circle of life, and endless hope, people began to use them at Christmas. Wreaths combine several Christmas symbols including holly, fruit, mistletoe, evergreens, tinsel, or other items, all of which retain their own symbolism on the wreath. The wreath has no beginning and no end, symbolizing God Himself.
