Auction Action in Beyersville
Lodge 25, Ennis Sisters Celebrate a Lifetime of Czech Family, Friendships, and Traditions in SPJST
Sisters Janie Novy Marusak and Dorothy Novy Dvorak were awarded pins of honor for being longtime SPJST members. Fifty years to be exact.
All eyes were on the auctions - silent and live - at Lodge 48, Beyersville on Saturday, August 20 for the lodge’s annual fundraiser. Lodge 48 Pres ident Robert Leshikar shared a word on behalf of the officers and members of Lodge 48: “Thank you to all who have supported us since 2002; who are supporting us and celebrating with us tonight; the busi nesses in the Taylor area who have donated items for our auctions over the years and tonight; the people who have rented our lodge for events over the years; for the great memories many of us have from SPJST activites in our early years; and for your energetic support and prayers, and for creating an opportunity to make many memories in the future.”
Fun in Fort Worth
John Paprskar sips from his giant mug at the Lodge 92, Fort Worth Czech-Tex Festival. Photos appear on page 21.
Their parents of Czechoslovakian origin enrolled them in SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis, Texas. They both enjoyed growing from their youth to mature life with the SPJST organi zation. They would reminisce how their grand mother Annie, who lived with them throughout their childhood and teens would so enjoy the SPJST celebrations. The focus being on Czech family, friend ships, and traditions. The wonderful homemade Czech pastries and tradi tional foods are still vibrant today in the lodge.
These sisters were taught at a young age respect, religion, and work ethic by their family. They remember picking cotton by hand on the family farm.
They also helped with raising poultry including, chickens, turkeys, guineas, geese, and ducks.
Pigs were also raised along with cattle. They milked the milk cows and then churned butter from the milk. The poultry, beef, and pork were pro cessed for home en joyment and some sold at market.
They also helped with the gardening and canning of vegetables and fruit grown on the farm.
Life was hard but good. Laundry was done with a ringer washing machine and outside clothesline. Piecing to gether scraps of material to make beautiful handmade quilts were another activity they managed to ac quire. Their mother and grandmother taught them to make homemade Czech pastries including kolaches and stru dels and homemade noodles and dum plings which they both enjoy and

Enhanced Premium Refund Guidelines
One of the most important financial benefits that the SPJST Executive Committee has extended to local lodges is the annual Premium Refund Program. The purpose of this program has been to help SPJST lodges keep their operations on a sound financial basis. The formula for calculating the refund is:
1. $1.00 for each paid-up certificate in the lodge; and
2. 1.25% of the lodge’s annual earned premium.
To receive the refund in early 2023, lodges must meet the following four-point criteria:
r 1. Hold Regular Lodge Meetings in Accordance with Section 74 of the SPJST By-Laws and Offer a Well-Rounded Fraternal Program.
Every lodge is required to hold regular meetings to discuss lodge business with its members. Service to each other — as fellow SPJST members — and service to the community is an important part of SPJST’s mission. Rather than mandating a specific number of fraternal activities that your lodge must accomplish in a given year in order to remain in good standing and qualify for incentives, the greater focus is on lodges working to host a healthy mix of “quality” events that bring value to SPJST’s community presence.
r 2. Return All Paperwork.
• Form 990 or Form 990-T for 2021 (due May 15, 2022)
• Fraternal Activity Summaries (due January 15, 2023)
• Updated Lodge Officer Listing (due January 15, 2023)
r 3. Submit Routine News/Photos to the Vestnik.
Every lodge is required to submit news of upcoming events, lodge meetings, and/or meeting/event summaries and/or photographs to the Vestnik as well as to their local media. Youth submissions, member features, and obituaries can also be submitted to the Vestnik. Every lodge is required to have a submission in at least 4 of the 24 published Vestniks in 2022. Of course, the lodge may contribute to the Vestnik more frequently. Local news media features can also satisfy these requirements when the features are shared with the Vestnik (see contact details below).
Vestniks are published on the second and fourth Mondays of each month. Unless otherwise noted in the Vestnik, the deadline for submitting items for publication are the first and third Mondays of each month at 5 p.m.
Articles and photos may be submitted in several ways:
• Online at www.spjst.org under the “News” tab
• Email to vestnik@spjst.org
• Mail to SPJST Vestnik • PO Box 100 • Temple, TX 76503-0100
• Text to 254-534-0807
r 4. Share Lodge/Member Activities and Stories on Social Media.
Lodges are encouraged to share lodge/member activities and stories on Facebook and/or Instagram. Some examples include lodge members serving a meal at a soup kitchen; members cleaning a cemetery; food drive for local pantry; hosting a heritage or cultural event; and contribution to non-profit organization. The Communication Department is available to assist with fulfilling the lodge’s social media requirement.

Janie and Dorothy also had the privi lege to visit the Czech Republic together in the 1970s and visit where their families originated from. These ladies extended the SPJST traditions to their family and grandchildren. Both have granddaughters who were SPJST State Queens. Rachel Hunter was the 2005 State Queen, and sisters April and Misty Dvorak both took State Queen titles in 2017 and 2019, re spectively. Rachel and April are both col lege graduates, and Misty is currently enrolled at UT Austin. Janie’s grandsons and great-granddaughter are also SPJST members.
These sisters will forever be bonded from beginning to end. Let us wish them a warm congratulations for keeping their Czech heritage alive. May God bless them both and continue to embrace them in their daily lives! Love you both! A spe cial thanks to Rita Krajca Holland for in viting these 50 year members to receive their pins. Rita is truly a role model for SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis. Her genuine dedication, hard work, and kindness make her exceptional. She is friendly and makes all feel welcome at Lodge 25.

State Royalty Appearance
I commend our State Royalty on how well they represented SPJST at Kolache Festival in Caldwell, Texas, on Saturday, September 10, 2022. They helped with the setup before each kolache eating contest division, handed out awards to the winners at the kolache baking show awards pres entation, and spoke to and handed out Cars & Guitars information at the Ko lache Festival Street Rod and Classic Cars Show. By doing these events and activities, the royalty gets to experi ence and interact with people, build confidence, and help in their com munication skills with others.
Recognizing Grandparents
A big shoutout to several of our youth clubs for putting on nice Grand parents Day programs. Way to go, youth clubs in Lodges 9, Snook; 17, New Tabor; 30, Taiton; 47, Seaton; and 81, Needville. If I left anyone out, please let me know so I can recognize you next month.

Youth Vestnik Project
The youth Vestnik Project for Oc tober is a super fun Czech heritage mini puzzle page. This project appears on the back page of this Vestnik. It commemorates Czech Heritage Month and counts as one merit point for October and – as a bonus – all sub missions received by November 4 will be entered in a drawing.
By the way, the Vestnik is including several activities to celebrate the 125th anniversary and Czech Heritage Month. See the September and Oc tober Vestnik’s to participate. All ages are welcome.

Introducing Our New Territories
As SPJST continues to evolve, we continue to look for new ways to better serve our members and prospective members. One of the ways we will ac complish this is through our new territory manager program. In the past, we have had seven RGAs (regional general agents) - one for each district. Although a nice concept, it created boundaries, turf wars, and “it’s my district” attitudes amongst the districts. The truth is we are one organization made of seven districts, and 102 lodges. We are not seven sep arate boundaries and 102 separate build ings; we are one organization in one state.
Beginning October 1, 2022, we will break up the state into three territories. The territories will cross district bound aries so no one district will have its own territory. We will still have seven dis
tricts, but multiple districts will be within the boundaries of each territory.
Below is a list of the lodges in each territory:

will work closely with the directors to help grow each area. They will be fo cused on only SPJST and the agents to help increase communication and partici pation. The agents, although assigned to a lodge, will be available to all lodges in that territory. With boundaries down, each lodge will have more agents to con tact, refer new members, to ask ques tions, help with changes, membership drives, and solicit help with local lodge events in the community. This will allow us to create more visibility in the com munities, become more active, and get us to the next level.
We are excited to bring this program to life. I believe it will increase com munication, create a more professional agent program, give more support to the lodges, and show that SPJST is not 102 lodges and seven districts, but one frater nal.
In the next article, we will introduce the territory managers and share their ex perience and bio. Watch for this article.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood hosts successful booth at Westfest
Vice President Don Urbanovsky called the meeting to order and led membership in reciting the Pledge of Al legiance. Sister Peggy Dobecka recited the SPJST pledge. Members held a mi
nute of silence to acknowledge the de ceased lodge members and those who lost their lives in the 9-11 disaster. Sister Irene Peterson reported 20 adults and two guests present for the meeting. Brother Urbanovsky acknowledged Brother Milton Peterson was in atten dance. It was so good to see him and hear he’s progressing in rehab. Brother Urbanovsky thanked the

Minutes of the last meeting were read by Sister Barbara Hykel. Sister Peggy Dobecka provided the treasurer’s report. Both reports were approved by the members present.
Sister Jeanette Beseda gave an up date on Home Office news. She also thanked all the members and volunteers who helped with making our booth a success at Westfest.
Sister Hykel reported the lodge sent a get well card to Milton Peterson and a sympathy card to the John Engelke family. She read a thank you note from the Ronald McDonald House for the do nation of aluminum cans and pull tabs.
Under old business, hall repairs were discussed. Under new business, Saint Martin Church offered to purchase our extra homemade bread for preparing dressing at their upcoming picnic. Membership voted to do so.
The committee for charitable contrib utions met prior to the start of this meet
ing. Brother Urbanovsky read the names of recipients and how the funds will be distributed.
Eight members volunteered to par ticipate in four auditing committees, three members per group. They will audit the following bank accounts: youth, insurance, bar, and trustees. The audit will take place prior to the next meeting, Friday, October 7. It was de cided to have a 6 p.m. meal. Then, au dits and monthly meeting will follow.
September birthday was Marshall Peterson. Progressive door prize drawn was Steven Hrabal, not present. Atten dance door prize drawn and presented to Bobby Dobecka, Kim Seith, and Mat thew Peterson.

Lodge 92, Fort Worth Ladies Circle reports on September meeting
The Ladies Circle of Lodge 92, Fort Worth met Tuesday, September 13, 2022, with 36 ladies and several men in attendance. Although I was unable to at tend, it has been reported to me that ev eryone had a good time visiting, shopping, eating, and playing bingo. For the meeting, members had the opportu nity of having a “garage sale.” They brought new, used, or homemade goods to sell for themselves and keep their profits. It is my understanding it was a good meeting.
Several members who had been under the weather were able to attend, and it was so great to see they were feeling much better. Their smiling faces were certainly a plus to see, and that they are on the mend was welcome news.
Business proceeded as usual with the financial report and reading of the mi nutes. President Cathy Simmank brought forward business to be dis cussed.
1 - She announced the need for homemade cakes or baked items for Czech Heritage Day on Saturday, Sep tember 17 at National Hall.
2 - October activities would feature “pumpkins and everything fall time.” There will be a pumpkin decorating contest. So . . . members are encouraged to bring a decorated pumpkin for judg ing. The winner is . . . given who knows what! There will also be a silent auction. Members are encouraged to bring a cou ple of items to donate for this event. Monies from the sale will go into the Ladies Circle “kitty” for future dona tions and expenses.
3 - November will bring a “craft fair” for those “crafters” who have items they would like to sell. Maybe we can find a Christmas present or two from this ac tivity.
4 - November will also be the elec tion of new officers. Our membership has actually gained quite a few new members. They might want to get more involved with leading the activities. We are so happy to be able to continue after the shut down from Covid. It’s such a good feeling to be with others for fel lowship. Fun stuff!
5 - In December, we will welcome Christmas and the birth of our blessed Savior. We will have our annual lunch

Lodge 187, Round Rock members remember 9-11
Hello!
We had a great September gathering. We discussed getting some new chairs for the lodge since the ones that we have now are still okay but are starting to show their age and wear. We also recog nized Rubie Volek for keeping up with the landscaping. She does an amazing job. We also had the discussion about 911 and that it has been 21 years since the terrible attack. Linda Johnson brought up that next month is the District Two fall fun fest, and we all plan on being there. The youth were also reminded to start getting ideas and making the Christmas ornaments for the fest.
Our entertainment was a blast! We played bingo. I loved all the different choices that we had for prizes.
We ended our gathering with a deli cious pot roast potluck dinner. Thank you, Rubie Volek and Linda Johnson, for bringing the main course.

SPJST Pavelka Cemetery Association reports on special called meeting
A meeting of the SPJST Pavelka Cemetery Association was held on Wed nesday, July 27, 2022, at 7:10 p.m. at Elk Hall in Elk, Texas, with 11 members in attendance. President Fred Kubitza Jr. presided over the meeting and called to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was re cited by members.
Billy and Mari Kubitza received questions from the Dieterich family re garding the future burial and tombstone of their loved one’s remains. The Diete richs were considering purchasing a tombstone designed to house cremated remains and asked if there would be any cemetery restrictions regarding it. They also asked if they would still need the two plots already purchased, or can the headstone be placed on one plot since their two remains would be in one head stone. (A picture of the tombstone was provided by the family.)
These questions prompted a called meeting to review our association’s bylaws regarding plots for cremated re mains which was last defined in the November 13, 2013, meeting minutes that states: “For anyone wanting a plot for cremated remains, they must pay the current plot price and only one remain per plot.”
The picture of the tombstone (a twodrawer mausoleum headstone) was given to members for their review along with the dimensions. This would not create any problem and was in line with other tombstone sizes throughout the cemetery.
In the last nine years, more families are choosing cremation due to the exces sive cost of traditional casket burials. Cremated remains require little burial space and thus consideration of ceme tery spaces and the continual care of the overall cemetery is a factor.
Plot size for Rows 1 to 7 is five feet wide by 10 feet long. Plot size in Row 8 and all rows thereafter is four feet wide by 10 feet long. The width of a tomb stone must fit within the width of the plot.
After a brief discussion, Bobby Ku bitza made the motion to amend the bylaws to read:
Allow two cremated remains per plot.
The plot price will be times two.
Individual names for the plot must be defined at the time of purchase. Afterwards, no name deviation or casket burial allowed for that plot.
Tammy Pavelka seconded the mo tion, and it was approved.
Husbands and wives that purchased two plots in the past and now opt for cremation and burial in the same plot can donate one plot back to the cemetery if they so choose. No refunds or name transfers will be given.
With no further business, the meeting adjourned at 7:25 p.m.
Respectfully submitted, Mari Kubitza Secretary-Treasurer Fred Kubitza Jr., President —SPJST—

If you are even remotely in touch with your senses, some things in life are instantly recognizable: The Michael Jor dan silhouette . . . the smell of freshly cut grass . . . the taste of a lemon . . . a baby crying . . . McDonalds’ Golden Arches . . . and the sound of the Vrážels’ Polka Band are a few that come to my mind. Let’s not get confused here. I’m not saying that you’re going to see Al fred Vrážel suiting up for the Chicago Bulls, or Michael Jordan onstage sing ing “If I Were A Bird” anytime soon, but you get my drift, right?
On Sunday, July 31, 2022, at SPJST Lodge 24, Flag Hall (Český Prapor), the sights and sounds of the Vrážels’ Polka Band were on full display as 600-plus family and friends of the band – each one a fan – gathered to celebrate the band and their families through the music provided by the Vrážels’ Tribute Band. The hall was brimming with ex citement all day as shouts, hoots, and hollers added to the festive occasion!
John Dujka did an excellent job or ganizing and leading an outstanding
Although I was in attendance in somewhat of a work capacity – promot ing Texas Polka News and to video record the performance – I managed to squeeze in a few dances with my wife, Cindy (Alfred and Bernice Vrážel’s daughter). Among the many highlights I experienced that day, two of my favor ites was seeing former members of the Vrážels’ Polka Band perform during the second set: Led by Alfred Vrážel, Glenn Marek, Bill Collins, Julius Dubčák, David Trojáček, and Franklin Hruška joined the tribute band and they really seemed to enjoy their time on stage to gether. Another highlight was hearing the band render a flawless version of the Unknown Girl polka (Holka Neznáma –Cindy’s favorite) during their final set. This instrumental is one that I’d heard Alfred open his radio show with for many years, but I’d never had the pleas ure of hearing the band play it live, and the guys absolutely nailed it!
The staff and members of Lodge 24, Cyclone deserve much of the credit as they were a key to the event’s success: They prepared and served the delicious sausage, cabbage, and potato plates . . . while the bar staff dispensed the liba tions and refreshments, hauled away mounds of empty bottles and cans, and kept the floor clean for dancers. Extra special thanks to Linda Wilde (Lodge 24 treasurer and daughter of Antón Vrážel) and sister Rose Vrážel for managing the ticket sales and seating arrangements, and to her husband, Daniel Wilde (Lodge 24 President), for his scrump tious sautéed cabbage recipe.
The day was indeed a joyous celebra tion of the Vrážel Polka Band’s im mense legacy, and I got to experience it in person!

Exes, Stepchildren, and a FuneralPlanning Matters
Funerals are for families not enemies.
by Sabrina N. Young, CFSP SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Member and Owner of Young’s Daughters Funeral Home and Bereavement Center
For many, funerals, visitations, wakes, and burials are all important ways to remember - and celebrate - the life of a loved one. However, in some circumstances, the life of the deceased may present a complex or complicated
family tree. When arranging a funeral, it can be difficult for current spouses and relatives to plan around inviting and in volving ex-spouses, stepchildren, and others who may have been close to the deceased at some point.
Contention in the Family
If you are planning a funeral, it is im portant to remember that it is always best to arrange for what the departed would have wanted. While it may be a struggle, proper etiquette dictates setting aside any personal emotions you may have about other individuals who may have been close to the deceased - such as an ex-spouse. Ideally, it is important to make sure that all family members have an opportunity to gain closure through whatever funerary traditions are
laid out.
In these situations, every arrange ment may be made on a case-by-case basis. In some cases, exes will get along with current spouses, and there will be little disagreement to be had at the cere mony and any other related events. In other situations, some from past mar riages may feel that it is best to sit at the back during the funeral, so as to pay re spect in a reserved fashion.
Stepchildren or children who may have come from other parents can also be difficult, especially when planning on how to involve them in the funeral. If the deceased played a strong parental role in the individual’s life, it is rec ommended to welcome them into the ceremony and allow them closure if they so choose.
When Tension Cannot Be Mitigated
If family drama will not be able to be set aside during a funeral, it is highly recommended that all individuals preplan for these situations before they occur. Whether requesting a private fu neral or detailing such desires in a will, individuals can ensure that certain past family members do not attend a funeral or event to avoid unwelcome tension.
Contact us for further insight, and we will be glad to assist you with your prearrangement. Our phone number is 254-401-1302; email youngsdaughters funeralhome@gmail.com; or you can find us on the web at www.Youngs Daughters.com.

August 23 was the first day of school. I got a good homeroom teacher this year. I cannot believe I am in fifth grade and that next year I will not be in ele mentary school anymore. This year, the theme at school is the Wizard of Oz. The only thing I do not enjoy about school is the new reading curriculum Amplify. Science is still my favorite subject, and I have a really good science teacher.
Last Sunday, we had our Grandpar ents Day meal at the SPJST hall. We had excellent spaghetti, salad, bread, and dessert. After we ate, we got to take pic tures with our grandparents. I had fun.
