I want to thank everyone for making this a great meeting. Many areas were covered and I am glad to see everyone working together to make our organization more successful. We have made a tremendous amount of progress in regards to investments and annuity sales. We need to step up our efforts in regards to insurance to provide financial security for many families. This is a hard thing for individuals realizing that the need will be there some day, and they need to be prepared. We must hold our RGAs and agents accountable for doing their jobs even though they are or may be part-time. We must continue to grow. If everyone contributes, we can continue being successful. I am so pleased with the pro gress we have made in the last year and a half and look forward for continued success in the future as long as we are thinking along the same lines and continue to push for everyone doing their best. We cannot accept mediocrity but the best efforts of everyone.

I would like to include Larry and Stephen with AQS for advising us and looking after our best interests in the investments that we have made. Like Delisle said - we need to make sure that we monitor everything we do, and that it pays off for SPJST. We need to stay fo cused and watch our spending. We still have a lot of hard work ahead of us and some tough decisions to make. Thank you all for a great meeting.

We had a very good meeting. I would like to thank the Board of Directors, the officers, and the Home Of fice Staff for the hard work and dedication to SPJST. It looks like we will have a good year.

Congratulations and thank you to Debbie Dohnalik on almost 46 years of service to SPJST. Wishing her a great retirement. Thank you to all the employees for their great service.

I want to thank all officers and directors for the great reports that make it easier to vote on the issues we may encounter. I feel the most enjoyable and im portant event during the Executive Committee meeting was the staff awards and retirement luncheon. Con gratulations to Debbie Dohnalik who is retiring after almost 46 years of dedicated service. Congratulations to Brian Vanicek for his 30 years of service, Sandra Dubcak for her 25 years of service, and Frank Horak for his 15 years of service. These awards are an exam ple of the dedicated employees we are fortunate to have in the SPJST Home Office.

Thank you, Board and Officers, for all of us being on the same page to make SPJST the most successful that we can be. We are definitely a team, and I look for ward to working with all of you to make us better to morrow than we are today.

I would also like to thank the members. Without them, we would not be here. It does not take one per son to make SPJST; but it takes all of us working to gether for the betterment of SPJST.

A board of director’s job, I found out early on, is making a lot of investment decisions. SPJST invest ment advisors would make presentations, and what they were saying sounded like they were speaking a foreign language. I right away went to work and did my homework on this - concentrating on the fixed in come and bond market. I got very interested in fi nance and how the market works. Last month, I passed my Series 65 test and am working on becom ing an investment advisor representative - another hat I can wear and help make better decisions as an SPJST board member.

I want to thank my fellow board members for such a productive meeting these past two days. I am ex cited about and looking forward to the great things that are happening at SPJST - from the changes and updates at Camp Kubena, to the revitalization of the youth program. I also want to thank the staff for at tending the luncheon with the officers and directors, and congratulations to Debbie Dohnalik on her retire ment!

As agents, it is our job to analyze your needs and show what you have as op tions. It is not our job to decide what you can afford nor what you can’t. Many times, when we do an analysis, we find people underinsured. When we show them what they need and give them the options, more often than not, they pur chase the additional insurance. month - with a total cost of $16,850 over 20 years, and it would have been paid up by the age of 22. Now, he is getting the same amount of insurance, costing over three and one-half times and paying until 100 years old - all because the agent did not at least offer him the insurance needed versus the least expensive amount. It’salways about showing what is best for your situation. Other options may in clude allowing you to get more for just pennies. Let’s take a five-year-old fe male. A $43,000 whole life policy is $25 per month. For only $2.92, you can get $50,000 ($27.92). Or even a $100,000 life paid at 65 for $48.20. You get more than twice the amount for less than twice the price, and you pay for 35 less years.

Every time we write a younger person and do not show you the other options, we are putting them in the same situation later in their life; effectively telling them they will need more insurance later and it will cost three to five times more, but that is okay with you. I know most agents care enough about you to show you the other options; unfortunately, most cus tomers don’t want to hear it.

wrong products, but they end up costing you more in the long run. Think about all you older members who bought small policies. Every day, I get a call asking to have an agent call them so they can get more insurance. Just that little extra costs three to five times more because you are that much older.

I just have to make this comment. Our government is letting down the US citizens. Why are we letting foreign countries buy our land? We are letting them buy our land, and we local farmers and ranchers are being taxed out of our homes. If you sell, do you check who is buying your property? Think about your children and grandchildren. What are they going to do? How can they afford to live here? Can they pay the taxes? America, we are losing our freedom . . . as we read in the Vestnik a few years ago from one who came from just that!

Honestly though, and this may sur prise some folks, fall is my favorite time to be at the Lodge with my family. With the day-to-day grind of work and school and 600 other activities and distractions, I love being able to show up for a Friday Czech Beer Garden, have a cold one with some of our closest friends, let the kids run around, and just start the week end in about as perfect a way as pos sible. I’ve said it before: The Lodge isn’t an adult’s place where the kids make due or a kid’s place where Laura and I have to pass some time; it’s a place for all of us to be happy as a family.

Date: Saturday, October 8 from 3 to 9 p.m.

While the passing of an individual may impact many different people, those close to the loved one may opt to hold a private service. If you see that a funeral or memorial service is “private” in an obituary, attendance is only limited to those invited. If a time, date, and place are not listed in the obituary, it means that only those invited are asked to attend—it is not open to the public.

Karen Kulhanek•••

Instead of being offended that one was not invited to a private service, simply remember that these decisions were made to respect the deceased and the surviving family.

Close friends and family would like to say goodbye in their own ways.

It can be easy to feel offended if one is not invited to attend a funeral service of someone they cared about. However, it is important to understand that those planning the service may have many reasons why they have chosen to do so. Keep in mind that these decisions were not made to block any specific person or to make an event “exclusive.”

The decision to hold a private service is intentional—whether decided upon by the family or the deceased prior to their passing. It is generally poor etiquette to ask a family for an invitation to a private service, as the event is de signed for only a few close friends and relatives. However, there are still ways to show support in a respectful way. You can go to our website to plant a tree, send a flower arrangement, or purchase a certificate for a bereavement class or a bereavement meal for after the service to nourish the family.

There are many reasons why a family may choose to host a private funeral service, but it is important for others to understand how to properly respond if they were not invited.

Reunion notices are published at no charge and as a benefit to SPJST members. First-run announcements may be edited to fit the space. There after, until the week prior to the reun ion date - as space permits - notices will be run in an abbreviated form. Please include your SPJST lodge number/name, and your contact phone number. TCGS invites all to Sept. 24 Czech Ancestors’ Early Lives event in Caldwell

We all seem to have this hidden knowledge that says the lives of our Czech ancestors was tough; but just how tough? What were their lives really like? What were their daily lives like as they moved about giving their best while re membering the hardships they endured as we reap the benefits?

Kimary Marble

Karen Locher

It can be presumed that many thought the wind, rain, and waves of the Atlantic were behind them, only to have to face those created in the Gulf of Mexico. If you have ever visited Indianola, you cannot help but visualize the beautiful homes, numerous businesses, and “high-stepping” lifestyle of the day the early inhabitants lived. We so often hear of the 1900 hurricane that hit Galveston. However, the storms of 1875 and 1886 were heartbreaking, destructive, and earth-shattering. While many Czechs did not live in or around Indianola, the storms greatly impacted their lives as the damage was not contained only to the Texas Gulf Coast. Come learn about In dianola – Mighty Port to Ghost Town which will be presented by Karen Locher.

We have only to look and study the lives of the numerous scientists, inven tors, doctors, etc. in the early history of our Fatherland, and our Czech pride

beams with joy. Instilled in their hearts, our Texas Czech ancestors had a desire to have their children gain as much edu cation as possible. In the Texas Czech Genealogical Society’s two-volume book, Early Czech Schools – Volumes I and II, many one- or two-room country schools are well-documented. We have high esteem for what those dedicated teachers, who most often taught with very little pay or tools, yet they gave so children could learn. When Reverend Chlumsky arrived in Texas from Bohe mia, his heart brought a dream across the big pond as we will learn when Kent Laza and Mark Olsen present The His tory of the Hus Schools in Texas as well as The Hus Encampment.

The day begins at 9 a.m. (doors open at 8 a.m.) and will be filled with morn ing refreshments, presentations, lunch, a special auction of homebaked goodies, an auction of three awesome and unique items, and a raffle for some most desir able gift cards.

On Saturday, September 24, 2022, Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) will host an event which will perhaps be a big eye-opener for many. Dr. Mirek Koudelka, who lives in Olo mouc, Czech Republic, will lead the event, via the internet, with a presenta tion on The Daily Lives of Our Ances tors while their homes were in Bohemia and Moravia. Enduring not only the hardship of a voyage across the Atlantic, arriving, mostly through the Port of Gal veston, they made it, for the most part by foot or wagon towards what was to be their newfound home. Settling down to back-breaking hard work, very little, if any, money, they struggled in what was their new life.

Dr. Mirek Koudelka
