SPJST will present its patriotic float in the Belton Fourth of July Parade on Monday, July 4 at 10 a.m. State King Caleb See and Duke Zane Lauderdale, both of Lodge 9, Snook, and State Queen Megan Ohnheiser and State Duchess Lilyanna Howard, both of Lodge 185, New Braunfels, will ride in convertibles in the parade. We will share updates on SPJST’s Facebook page as to our location in the parade and possible live or recorded broadcasts.

Heartfelt Sympathy We extend sincere condolences to the staff at Camp Kubena and especially to Assistant Camp Director David Motley. It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Camp Kubena Hospitality Manager Melinda Bigham on Saturday night, June 18. Melinda was also Camp Kubena Assistant Director David Motley’s partner. She was a very sweet, talented lady who made everyone feel welcome at Camp. She was spunky, filled with joy, and always smiling.

Melinda will be greatly missed. Please keep David and the Camp Kubena staff in your thoughts and prayers.

New Postage Rates The U.S. Postal Service has proposed the following price increases to take effect July 10. Letters (1 oz.) will increase from 58 cents to 60 cents.

Letters additional ounce(s) were 20 cents, but will increase to 24 cents. The cost to mail a domestic postcard was 40 cents, increasing to 44 cents. The cost to mail an international letter (1 oz.) will increase from $1.30 to $1.40.

• Assists in establishing business plan and expense budget for Information Technology department. As such, consults with users to discuss their needs for new programs or changes to existing programs. Reviews and analyzes new products and technology.

• Manages general banking activities and reconciles all bank statements.

Downloads monthly bank statements and account activity. Transmits ACH payments to lodges and youth leaders.

Drafts annuity payments and medical reimbursements.

• Files all necessary reports with the Texas Department of Insurance.

• Maintains exact information of all members of every lodge. This includes paid to dates, amount of insurance and all general information pertaining to

It’s Your Life

3 F’s to Live By The world is making it harder for us to navigate through our everyday life.

There is always something going on. We have entered in a world of everyone thinks we should adopt their views. If you don’t, then you don’t care or are just plain evil. We can’t seem to wake up without some group telling us how we should run our lives.

The truth, life does not have to be that complicated. There are three F’s that can make your life better . . . Faith, Family, and Friends. Sometimes we take the importance of this for granted. If every decision in life is centered around one of these three F’s, you will find less stress, more happiness, comfort, and support in good times and bad.

Everything starts with faith. Without faith, hope diminishes faster, confidence wanes, and pessimism rules over optimism. The support of family from you provides comfort, raises self-esteem, and increases confidence. True friends provide support in good and bad times. Your friendship can help others get through tough times.

With every decision based on the three F’s, your life will become less stressful, more confident, supportive, and optimistic. Always keep these three F’s at the top of your list. If you are having a bad day, think of your faith and pray on it. If you need an opinion start with family or friends. If you not feeling well, look at one of these for comfort.

Start every decision in life with the three F’s and in good or bad times, you will see the brightness of life.

State Fraternal Director shares July updates What are the Dog Days of Summer?

The “Dog Days of Summer” is the period from July 3 to August 11. Some say that it is the hot sultry days not fit for a dog. While others suggest, it’s the weather in which dogs go mad. The phrase refers to when the sun occupies the same region of the sky as Sirius, the brightest star visible from any part of Earth and part of the constellation Canis Major, the Greater Dog. Ancient Romans believed July 23 was a significant day; this is when Sirius is aligned with our sun thus giving off more heat and added to our sun’s warmth adding to the long stretch of sultry weather. I hope all our members stay cool during these hot days of summer.

If any district’s first place winner cannot participate at State YAD, parents must notify the District Youth Counselor, Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez (tammym@spjst.com), and me (frankh@spjst.com) no later than 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 26. We will then contact the second place winner to invite them to represent the district in the competition.

Save the Date—Cars & Guitars October 29 at Camp Kubena Cars & Guitars is Saturday, October 29 at Camp Kubena. Mark this date on your calendar, and plan to be with us!

Planned activities include classic cars, music, food, arts/crafts vendors, kids’ activities, a disc golf tournament, and family fun. Camp Kubena is located at 2001 Waldeck Road in Ledbetter.

The October 29 car show is open to all makes and models. Early registration is available online at campkubena.com.

Spots are also available for farmers market, arts/crafts, service, and auto-related vendors. The cost is $40 for one 10’ by 10’ outdoor space. For July and August, we will present one Vestnik Project that will count for two merit points. The project will be a survey about revitalizing the SPJST Youth Program. District News District Six shares annual meeting minutes The District Six Annual Meeting was held on Sunday, April 10, 2022, at Taiton Community Center in Taiton, Texas.

Lodge 30, Taiton hosted the event with 47 members and guests present.

After registration and the morning social, District Six Director Annie Vahalik (4) thanked everyone for attending and led the blessing. Lodge 30 served a delicious meal of brisket and sausage with all the trimmings. Immediately following the meal, President Joe Siptak (4) asked for special reports from representatives of the Czech Heritage Museum, Camp Kubena, S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living Centers, and the Cemetery Association.

Philip Vahalik (4) reported for the Czech Heritage Museum is open and running. The Museum committee is meeting monthly via web conferencing.

The Museum is updating its website and accepting donations. Mr. Vahalik invited everyone to come visit the Czech Heritage Museum in Temple.

Lisa Bubela (30) reported for Camp Kubena. The Camp is ready to go and booked for the summer. Barns have been painted, and brush has been cleared. She is excited about all the improvements and looks forward to Rob accomplishing more improvements prior to camp. SPJST teen (leaders-intraining) camp will be held from June 23 to 26 and junior camps will be July 7 to 10 (session 1) and July 14 to 17 (session 2) which will include District Six campers.

S.P.J.S.T. District Six Senior Living Centers Representative Joe Siptak (4) reported that the rest homes are receiving excellent ratings. Spaces are available for residents at the centers, and there are also employment opportunities. Senior Living Centers have held a meeting with Donnie Victorick as chair.

Johnnie Hoffman (184) reported for the District Six Cemetery Association.

He stated that District Six is down to only one cemetery - Velehrad. The road repairs to the Velehrad Cemetery have been made. The District Six Cemetery Association is in the process of acquiring a monument to honor Ferdinand Breska, first SPJST Vice President, who

is buried in the Velehrad Cemetery. The Association is looking for donations with the approximate cost of the monument being $680.

President Joe Siptak (4) thanked the representatives for their reports and leadership on the committees. President Siptak then called the District Six Annual Meeting to order at 12:52 p.m. with the posting of colors. Hosting Lodge 30 President Yvonne Marcaurele led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance.

She thanked everyone for their attendance and hoped they enjoyed their visit. It is nice to see everyone here for the fraternal fellowship.

Second Vice President Susan Siptak (4) welcomed special guests Vice President of Sales and Marketing Delisle Doherty (196), District Six Regional General Agent Carolina Covarrubia (28), and District Six Director Annie Vahalik (4) and husband Philip (4).

Secretary Elizabeth Holub (23) called the roll call of officers, lodges, and District Six Governance Representative. All officers and District Six Governance Committee Representative Lisa Bubela (30) were present. Eight lodges were in attendance: Lodges 4, Hallettsville; 23, Moravia; 28, East Bernard; 30, Taiton; 40, El Campo-Hillje; 63, Sweet Home; 151, Wharton; and 184, Moulton.

Treasurer Marjorie Treumer (30) gave the treasurer’s report. She also informed that due to some banking issues District Six had to change to a new checking account number. The books were audited early in the day. Also, the officers had discussed a donation for Mr. Zavodny. It was determined to make the memorial donation to the Czech Heritage Museum.

District Six Youth Counselor Lisa Bubela (30) announced the District Six Queen is Faith Korenek (30), and her duchess is Vanessa Riha (30). DYC Bubela (30) thanked the youth for their participation in the decorated rock contest today and announced the winners.

She reminded the youth that District Six will be attending summer camp at Camp Kubena on July 14 to 17. Registration is online. She welcomed anyone to stop by the camp for a visit.

The gates are closed so you will need to call ahead prior to visiting. District Six Youth Achievement Day is scheduled for July 10 with Lodge 30, Taiton host-

ing. Watch for updates in the Vestnik for the participants.

Lisa Bubela is also the District Six representative for the Governance Committee. She stated that the Board of Directors recently determined that the next SPJST Convention will be June 7 to 9, 2024, at the Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center in Temple. On Saturday, May 7, an online webinar will be presented for all delegates regarding SPJST’s state of affairs.

Youth Counselor Lisa Bubela (30) then welcomed all youth to gather for an Easter egg hunt.

Vice President of Sales and Marketing Delisle Doherty presented Treasurer Marjorie Treumer (30) with a check for the district meeting and Lisa Bubela with a check for the District Six youth.

Mr. Doherty shared with the membership that this is the first time in four years that SPJST has shown a profit.

SPJST is very strong and doing well.

Rates have been holding to this point, but with the upcoming Board of Directors’ meeting, there may be some favorable changes. Some things that are being done to encourage sales is a new referral program and membership drive. Delisle stated that SPJST needs to be aware of things happening in the community of your lodge to be able to have members attend and get SPJST in front of the public. Examples given were Foundation days, community events, etc. Agents are here to help all lodges. They are ready to write business for any of the lodges.

All lodges have up-to-date brochures and posters. Lots of things are happening with SPJST. Regional General Agent Carolina Covarrubia (28) welcomed everyone on this beautiful Palm Sunday. Carolina (28) wanted to reiterate what Delisle had said about how lodges need to put SPJST out there. We need to let people know that SPJST is more than a life insurance company and a fraternal that has lots of opportunities to offer membership piece of mind. All lodges have posters that can be displayed at meeting places. Ms. Covarrubia (28) also stated that we need more agents. Main points she stated are to move forward, bring more members, and put out brochures.

SPJST has been around for 125 years.

We need to strengthen and continue to grow lodges so SPJST will be still around for another 125 years.

District Six Director Annie Vahalik (4) welcomed everyone and thanked them for attending on this beautiful Sun-

VĚSTNÍK day. She also thanked Lodge 30, Taiton for hosting the annual meeting and the delicious meal and desserts provided by everyone. Annie said that former District Six Director Karen Kaspar (30) had stopped by earlier to send greetings and let everyone know that she is enjoying this season of her life. Director Vahalik (4) thanked Delisle for attending from the Home Office to share the good news of things happening with SPJST and the youth for their participation in the decorated rock contest and Easter egg hunt.

Director Vahalik (4) reported that on the previous Thursday, 14 youth leaders, parents, and grandparents met with Vice President of Communications Melanie Zavodny and State Fraternal Director Frank Horak to discuss future visions for the youth program. She also mentioned that signs are available for halls and meeting places. The next board of directors’ meeting will be on April 18. If members have suggestions, ideas, or topics to be presented, please call or email her. Director Vahalik (4) stated that there had been ideas suggested for the fall meeting event for members to gather and enjoy fellowship. With this being the 125th anniversary of SPJST, we could possibly celebrate at Velehrad Hall on the grounds of Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in October 2022. Director Vahalik (4) thanked the members for allowing her to represent District Six. She is enjoying her position and being involved with taking SPJST into the future.

President Joe Siptak (4) thanked Yvonne Marcaurele (30) for providing him with a special chair for the meeting.

Joe (4) is recovering from recent surgery. It should be about another six weeks until he is able to return to work at HEB to complete his 50 years of service.

Under old business, the membership was provided copies of the 2021 minutes. A motion was made by Yvonne Marcaurele (30), seconded by Philip Vahalik (4) to approve the minutes as presented. Motion passed.

Under new business, a motion was made by Ardis Bacak (40) to make a $400 donation to the Breska marker for the Velehrad Cemetery. Seconded by Linda Henderson (40), the motion passed. Yvonne Marcaurele (40) presented a personal donation to the cemetery for the marker.

A discussion regarding the District Six fall meeting entertained ideas of a movie or having the meeting at the

The audit committee, consisting of David Bucek (151), Johnnie Hoffman (184), and Debbie Krpec (30), reported the books to be in very good order.

Motion passed.

Congratulations to the officers! They were installed by Director Vahalik (4).

First Vice President Yvonne Marcaurele (30) read the list of deceased members from District Six. A moment of silence was held.

Secretary Elizabeth Holub (23) presented the list of 75- and 50-year members as well as Age 96 honorees.

Winners of the Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club raffle were presented. Door prizes were then given away.

Following the door prizes, a motion was made by Lisa Bubela (30), seconded by Helen Kelner (28), to adjourn the meeting. Motion passed. President Joe Siptak adjourned the meeting at 2:40 p.m.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood invites all to July 17 annual picnic SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood meeting for June was called to order by Vice President Don Urbanovsky. Youth club member Quinlan Dobecka led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and the SPJST pledge, followed by a moment of silence for deceased members. Sister Irene Peterson reported 14 adults, five youth, and two guests were present. Brother Urbanovsky asked for the May minutes, and Secretary Barbara Hykel read them.

The treasurer’s report was presented by Sister Peggy Dobecka. Both reports were accepted by the membership.

Sister Jeanette Beseda provided a fraternal report. Sister Hykel reported sending a get well card to Milton Peterson. Sympathy cards were sent to the families of Donald Cernosek, John Rauschhuber, and Scott Hornsby.

Under old business, Brother Urbanovsky discussed the SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood picnic to be held Sunday, July 17. The prize drawing tickets were printed and distributed to the members present. Brother Urbanovsky read through all 22 raffle donations from local businesses and individuals. Top prize will be a Visio 43-inch Smart HD television. It was decided at a past trustee meeting to keep the raffle tickets at $1 each or six tickets for $5.

Friday, June 10 will be a social and meal at 6 p.m. to celebrate Father’s Day along with a work project for processing kitchen requests for donations to be used at the picnic on July 17.

Sister Beseda provided an explanation on setting up a Lodge Management Fund with the SPJST Home Office. This will provide an accrual of a higher inter-

est rate and will be decided upon at the next trustee meeting.

Brother Urbanovsky stated he was delighted to present an SPJST scholarship to Lodge 6 member Kyle Gerik, who is an Abbott High School graduate.

Brother Urbanovsky has made contact for someone to access and repair the floor of the Westfest booth. Repair needs attention prior to Westfest, which occurs September 2 and 3.

Annual Picnic—July 17 Please support Lodge 6, Cottonwood Hall at our annual picnic on Sunday, July 17. Meals will be served with cool inside dining as well as to-go meal which can be picked up at the back of the hall. The meal consists of fried chicken and sausage, several veggie side dishes, a drink, and dessert for $12. A country auction follows the meal inside the hall. This is a fundraiser for our lodge and helps fund our charitable contributions that are made in our local community. Thanks for your help and support! Stay cool!

A new air conditioning unit will be installed on Thursday by Matt Hoelscher. The words “Flag Hall” are not on the new sign. President Wilde will work on this. The free wedding dance was discussed. It was outstanding.

It was announced that Daniel Wilde will turn 70 and will not run for president. This is the lodge’s loss as Daniel has done many things on his own that nobody else could do. We are thankful for his ability and leadership. Linda will stay on as treasurer.

Linda and Daniel Wilde celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary. Get well wishes to Daniel Wilde who is recovering from knee surgery.

Lodge 24, Cyclone met on Monday, June 13, 2022, at Flag Hall. The meeting was called to order by President Daniel Wilde. He led the Pledge of Allegiance and a silent prayer for our deceased members and for the Ukrainians.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood member Edward Smajstrla Achieves Grand Age of 96 SPJST congratulates Brother Edward H. Smajstrla of Lodge 6, Cottonwood, who celebrates his 96th birthday on July 31, 2022. Brother Smajstrla will now receive all SPJST benefits with no further dues or assessments.

Edward was born to Ed and Anne Smajstrla in Cottonwood, Texas. He worked on their farm, picking cotton; in fact, he said it was a lot of cotton.

He married Tracie on June 15, 1940, in Abbott. They were blessed

with one child, Monica (husband Ricky) of Houston. Edward was in the retail business. He and Tracie loved to dance the polka, and they made many hunting trips to Wyoming.

Tracie passed away in June 2015.

Congratulations again to Brother Smajstrla for attaining the Grand Age of 96. May God bless him with many more years of good health and happiness to share life with his loved ones.

Lodge 4, Hallettsville members walk across texas

SPJST Lodge 4, Hallettsville participated in the Walk Across Texas/2022 Lavaca County Spring Walking League, sponsored by Texas A&M Agri Life Extension Family and Community Health. The Lodge 4 team finished the walk with a total of 1,136.79 miles. Team member Barbara Steffek logged a total of 380.7 miles being the highest individual each week and overall.

Barbara and husband Ricky were in the top 20 walkers. Patsy Zabransky was in the next level logging more than 150 miles. Each participant received incentive prizes. Lodge 4 walkers, pictured left to right, are Patsy Zabransky, Gayenell Chudej, Team Captain Annie Vahalik, Barbara Steffek, and Ricky Steffek. Not pictured is Philip Vahalik. Everyone agreed it was a challenge and a great way to get motivated and work towards a healthier lifestyle.

Reports were approved as read. Rita announced that teen camp will be held this month at Camp Kubena and that Madison will be attending. In July, several members will be attending the first junior session of camp and on July 30, State YAD will be held in Temple.

Purchasing new chairs was discussed, and JoAnn announced that they have been ordered and will be delivered the first week in July. Members will have first chance to purchase the old chairs for $5 each.

Polka Festival Thanks JoAnn announced that the 55th Annual National Polka Festival was a success, and she thanked everyone for their participation and help. Samuel and Olivia, both previous youth club members, finished their year as National Polka Festival 2021-2022 King and Queen of the dance contest. Best wishes to you both at Abilene Christian University this coming year. And, the youth club did a great job with the welcome and flag ceremony at Polka Festival this year. We are so proud of our youth!

The next topic was regarding refurbishment of the existing flagpole. In 1971, the family of Emil F. Trojacek honored him by purchasing a United States flag and flagpole that is set at the entrance of the property. Emil was the first soldier from Ellis County to lose his life in World War II. Representing the family, Larry Honza, who is a nephew of Emil announced that they would like to help with the renovation project by donating money to help with expenses.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Flag Bearer Charles Nemec, and a moment of silence followed. Secretary Cherri Petr then read the minutes from the May meeting which were accepted by all after a few corrections.

Youth Leader Lynda Novak reported that the youth continue to meet and that the youth were busy with summer schedules and preparing to attend State Youth Achievement Day. She did remind everyone about teen camp, submitting applications for summer camp at Camp Kubena and State Youth Achievement Day on Saturday, July 30 at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple. Vice President Lynda Novak then gave her Fraternal Council and Czech Culture Society reports. Lodge 107, Floresville members assist with hall maintenance after June meeting The monthly meeting of Lodge 107, Floresville was held on Sunday, June 5, 2022, at the lodge hall at 3 p.m. President Bielefeld called the meeting to order, and Flag Bearer Colt Pruski led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was held for past and present military members and deceased members of the lodge as well as the family and victims of the Uvalde school shooting.

Minutes were read by Secretary Pruski and approved as read. Treasurer Korus read his report, and it was approved as read. Hall Manager Bertrand reported the hall is rented every weekend through August 21.

Under old business, the building committee has found another company to install the signs from the Home Office. We voted to hire James House to construct and install the signs.

After the meeting, members replaced air filters in the air conditioning units, reattached the condensation line in the walk-in cooler, and replaced a halogen bulb on the outside of the hall.

June birthdays/anniversaries were Wendy Pruski on the 5th and Hope Bayer on the 18th. Forgive us, but we still want to recognize Oscar and Jackie Korus’ wedding anniversary on May 16.

Lodge 133 San Antonio meets July 10 Emil F. Trojacek was the first soldier from Ellis County to lose his life in World War II. In 1971, Emil’s family honored him by purchasing a United States flag and flagpole that was placed at the entrance of Lodge 25, Ennis. Emil’s nephew, Larry Honza, announced that the Trojacek/Honza family will assist with the expenses for the renovation project. He is pictured presenting a donation to Lodge 25 President JoAnn Jones.

The SPJST Lodge 133, San Antonio appreciation rally that was held on Sunday, April 24, 2022, at the VFW Post 76 Hall was a big success. I want to thank all of you who were able to come. I hope you saw the photos of the activities in the May 9 issue of the Vestnik. I also want to thank SPJST President/CEO Brian Vanicek, Vice President of Sales and Marketing Delisle Doherty, and District Seven Director Regina House for their support organizing and participating in this rally.

At this rally, we decided to schedule

the rest of our quarterly meetings for 2022 at the VFW Post. Post 76 is located at 10 Tenth Street in San Antonio. This post is the oldest and largest Post in the state of Texas organized and chartered in San Antonio on June 26, 1917, by the Veterans of the Spanish American War. The Tenth Street structure, also known as the Petty House, was sold to the Sam Houston Post 76 in June 1947, and has since been used as the post headquarters.

Today, it is a place to serve and honor our veterans, and also provide a social

center open to the surrounding community. There is a parking lot provided right near the entrance of the hall.

Lodge 179, Warrenton members prepare, deliver goodies to Care Inn The residents of Care Inn nursing facility seemed to enjoy our visit and the goodies we presented them.

President Ruby Juergens, Fraternal Activities Coordinator Marceil Malak and our new member, Rob Clift, prepared a good supply of homemade cookies and various toiletries and distributed them to the ladies and gents who reside there. It was enjoyable to us to see the smiles on their faces.

Next Meeting—July 14 Lodge 179, Warrenton is now meeting quarterly. The next one is scheduled for Thursday, July 14 at 11 a.m. at JW Steakhouse in Carmine. We look forward to seeing a huge increase in the number of our members in attendance.

Lodge 180, Burleson supports Esther’s Safe Haven Lodge 180, Burleson had its monthly meeting at Logan’s Roadhouse in Burleson on Tuesday, June 7, 2022. The meeting was conducted by President Nancy Kelly and First Vice President Joe Hurtik. The meeting was mostly conducted by Joe as I had not been able to attend meetings for a while.

The meeting started with the call to order by Joe Hurtik, followed by the Pledge of Alliance. We then had a moment of silent prayers for all of those in need as well as one of our members, Verna Mason. To all of you in Vestnik land: please include Verna in your prayers as well.

During the course of dinner, Sandy Almonte received a graduation gift of $200 for her son, Logan, who graduated from Godley High School. Logan has

Fort Worth Friendship Club President Lola Taylor opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and the Lord’s Prayer. Sharron Connelly read a beautiful poem about the beach and the ocean being blue because it held the sorrows of men. We closed our eyes and heard the delicate chirping of seagulls.

Our sweet secretary, Mary Martinez, read the May minutes and our beloved treasurer, Margaret Sears, presented her report.

Our dedicated sunshine lady, Betty Carter was our lovely Beach Queen and was presented with a bouquet of silk flowers. The wave background was painted by Sharron Connelly.

We will be eating out at Golden Corral in July, one of our favorite events.

Rides will be provided.

Mercedes Wheeland was our hardworking hostess. With the help of faithful volunteers, they presented a great lunch.

Getting to know the Declaration of Independence The Declaration of Independence is a formal document that served as the signatory colonies’ statement that they were now “free and independent States.” It is a vital document in American history.

On July 1, 1776, delegates from the original 13 colonies, making up the Second Continental Congress, met in Philadelphia to vote on Richard Henry Lee’s motion for independence. After some deliberation, ultimately 12 of the 13 delegates voted in favor. In recognition of those 12 delegates, here are 12 facts regarding the Declaration of Independence.

1. The drafted document was officially adopted on July 4, 1776, two days after freedom from Britain was approved.

However, most delegates signed the document on August 2, 1776, while others signed on a later date. John Dickinson and Robert R. Livingston never signed the Declaration of Independence.

2. John Dunlap was the official printer of Congress at the time. He worked all

night and into the morning of July 5 to produce the large, single-sided sheet, known as a broadside. About 200 copies of Dunlap’s broadside were made.

3. The University of Virginia owns two copies of a rare early printing of the Declaration. It is on display in the Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library. It is believed the copy once belonged to George Washington.

4. Benjamin Franklin, George Read, Roger Sherman, Robert Morris, George Clymer, and James Wilson signed both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.

5. The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were hidden at Fort Knox during World War II, two weeks after Pearl Harbor was attacked.

6. Despite what the movie “National Treasure” will have one believe, the message on the back of the document is visible and reads “Original Declaration of Independence dated 4th July 1776.”

7. Richard Stockton, a lawyer from New Jersey, was a signer of the Declaration who later recanted his support of the American revolution. He subsequently swore his allegiance to King George III after being captured by the British.

8. In 1989, an original Dunlap Broadside was found hidden behind a picture a Philadelphia man bought at a flea market for $4. It later sold for $8.1 million.

Ultimately, 26 copies of the original prints have been found.

10. Early on, not everyone in America was supportive of the Declaration of Independence. Partisan politics led to discord. Federalist John Adams was feuding with Republicans and Thomas Jefferson. The anniversary date of the signing was not widely celebrated until the Federalists were no longer involved in politics.

11. The one-year anniversary of Independence Day and the celebration of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence slipped the minds of Congress in 1777. When they remembered it was July 3rd, they planned a last-minute celebration on July 4th, and each year thereafter.

12. John Trumbull’s painting “Declaration of Independence,” which was made into a lithograph replica by Ralph Trembly, hangs in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol. It is a fictional depiction of the five-man drafting committee presenting their draft to Congress, and not the signing. The painting shows 42 of the 56 signees, since Trumbull couldn’t get likenesses of all involved. The men featured in the painting were never all in the room at the same time during the Declaration’s debate and signing.

1744: The Treaty of Lancaster is signed in Pennsylvania. The treaty dictates that the Iroquois will cede land between the Allegheny Mountains and the Ohio River to the British colonies.

1776: The United States Declaration of Independence is adopted by the Second Continental Congress. July 4 actually marks the day the final wording of the declaration, which had been submitted on July 2, was approved.

1802: The United States Military Academy officially commences operations. Located in West Point, New York, the USMA is the oldest of the five American service academies.

Impress guests with homemade burgers this Fourth of July Backyard barbecues are a staple of summertime. In fact, many Fourth of July celebrations just wouldn’t feel right without hamburgers and hot dogs cooking over an open flame in the backyard.

Burgers may not qualify as fancy fare, but they’re perfect for Independence Day celebrations. This year, party hosts can add a little something extra to their barbecues by whipping up some homemade hamburgers. This recipe for “Mushroom and Swiss Burgers with Bacon and Aioli” from “The Essential Kamado Grill Cookbook” (Rockridge Press) by Will Budiaman is sure to make your Fourth of July festivities more flavorful.

Mushroom and Swiss Burgers with Bacon and Aioli Serves 4 8 bacon slices 8 ounces cremini mushrooms, sliced Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper 2 pounds ground beef

2. Put the bacon in the skillet. Close the lid and cook for 1 to 2 minutes or until browned and crispy around the edges.

Transfer to a plate.

3. Add the mushrooms to the skillet.

Close the lid and cook, stirring once, for 7 to 9 minutes or until browned. Transfer to a plate. Season with salt and pepper.

4. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, season the beef with pepper and 4 teaspoons of salt. Using your hands, mix until just in-

corporated; form into four 1-inch-thick patties with a slight dimple in the center.

5. Put the burgers on the grate. Close the lid and cook, flipping halfway through, for 8 to 10 minutes total for medium, or until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the center registers 135 F. Aioli Makes 1 1/4 cups 1 large egg 1 cup vegetable oil 2 garlic cloves, peeled 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1. Put the egg in the bowl of a small food processor. Blend until beaten.

2. With the machine running, slowly stream in the oil through the feed tube until emulsified (the mixture thickens).

3. Blend in the garlic and salt.

4. Transfer to an airtight container, refrigerate, and use within 5 days.

Troubleshooting: Is your aioli just not coming together, staying thin and runny instead of thickening? You may be streaming in your oil too quickly. But don’t throw out the batch. Instead, pour it into a small cup or bowl, wash and dry the bowl and blade of the food processor, and start again with a fresh egg. Use the previous batch as your “oil.” (MS) —SPJST—

The Declaration of Independence and July 4 are indelibly linked. But you may need to be an American history buff to know that the link is less direct than it may seem. The Continental Congress declared American independence on July 2, even though the final wording of the Declaration of Independence had yet to be approved.

That approval came two days later, which is why American independence

is celebrated on July 4. Furthermore, the Declaration of Independence now on display at the National Archives in Washington, D.C., was not signed on July 4. The signatures on that document, which have been a source of pride for descendants of the signers for centuries, were written on August 2, a full month after the Congress declared its independence from Great Britain.

And in a reflection of life in the 18th century, Great Britain did not even receive the declaration until November of 1776. (MS) —SPJST—

Lodge 232, Houston Midtown member receives TOCA honor On Saturday, March 26, 2022, the Texans of Czech Anestry (TOCA) banquet was held at Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange. The purpose of the event was to recognize outstanding members from TOCA member organizations for their contributions to preserving Czech language, culture, and heritage. This year’s banquet was the first since 2019 because banquets were canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to health concerns with Covid.

At the event, Czech Heritage Society (CHS) 2020 nominee Rudolph Rusnak was honored. Rudolph is a Rudolph Rusnak member of SPJST 2020 Award Lodge 232, Houston Recipient Midtown. Nominees receiving the awards are living CHS members not previously nominated for the award. Thank you to Rudolph for his years of dedication to the Czech Heritage Society of Texas!

TOCA is a Texas Domestic Non Profit Corporation which filed on October 29, 1987, as an umbrella organization that serves to improve and facilitate communication among Czechfounded organizations. TOCA was founded in 1986, working to make it possible for member organizations to mutually assist one another in their pursuit of preservation and promotion of Czech language, culture, and heritage by citizenship, fraternalism, mutual aid, services, and products and to assist and support each other in undertaking worthy projects and activities. Founders were Jerry Valchar, Glenn Hutka, and Calvin Chervenka.

Member organizations of TOCA are American SOKOL Organization, Southern District (SOKOL); Bexar County Czech Heritage Society (BCCHS); Catholic Family Fraternal (KJZT); Catholic Union of Texas (KJT); Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT); Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas (CESAT); Czech Heritage Society of Texas (CHS); Czech Heritage Society of Travis-Williamson Counties; Farm Mutual Insurance Company of Texas (RVOS); and SPJST. The Resolution Committee of Lodge Karel Havlicek No. 4, Hallettsville on behalf of our entire membership wish to express our sincerest and deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother, JAMES FRANKLIN “JIMMY” BUCEK, 91, of Hallettsville who peacefully passed away on Wednesday, May 18, 2022.

Visitation was at 6 p.m. Monday, May 23 at Kubena Funeral Home in Hallettsville. Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Funeral mass was celebrated at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 24 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallettsville. Monsignor John Peters officiated. Burial followed in Sacred Jimmy Bucek Heart Catholic Cemetery.

He was born on September 4, 1930, in Hallettsville to Julius and Margaret Bucek. He spent most of his early life in Hallettsville then raised his family in Fort Worth. He graduated from Hallettsville High School and from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio. Jimmy served four years in the Navy during the Korean war.

Jimmy married the love of his life, Joyce Elizabeth Drozd, in 1952 in San Antonio, and they celebrated over 64 years of marriage. They lived in Fort Worth for more than 40 years and attended Holy Name Catholic Church. He worked for Lever Brothers for more than 25 years and retired at the age of 60.

Joyce and Jimmy moved to Hallettsville in 2006 to enjoy their retirement.

Jimmy enjoyed gardening, cooking, sharing his recipes, and the Texas Aggies. He loved sitting by the barbecue pit with his sons and talking about sports. He played tennis regularly into his early 80s and golf until just a few years ago.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 4, Hallettsville.

JUDITH ANN KRIZAK BERGER, who passed away on Monday, January 17, 2022. She was born on December 19, 1945.

Funeral service was at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Weimar, Texas, on Tuesday, January 25 at 10 a.m.

Visitation began at 8:30 a.m. followed with parJudith Berger ish rosary prior to the mass at 9 a.m.

Interment was in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in Weimar.

She was a member of SPJST Lodge 4, Hallettsville.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one granddaughter.

Survivors include husband Bobby Berger of Oakland; daughter Kimberly Mason (husband David) of Weimar; sons Dwayne Yancey Berger (wife Stefanie) of Houston and Vaughn Berger of Oakland; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Donations may be made to St. Michael’s Catholic School or a charity of one’s choice Schwenke-Baumgarten Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements.

May our departed sister rest in eternal peace.

Jimmy was preceded in death by loving wife Joyce in 2016; his parents; and brother Bobby.

He is survived by sons Gary and wife Theresa, Paul and wife Julie, John, Mark and wife Julie, and Eric; loving grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother Stanley (Tammy); sister Margaret; and numerous nieces, nephews, beloved extended family, and friends.

Pallbearers were John Bucek, Mark Bucek, Eric Bucek, Gary Bucek , Jonathan Bucek, and Stanley Bucek. Honorary pallbearer was Paul Bucek.

Memorials may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Lavaca County Meals on Wheels, or charity of donor’s choice.

Resolution Committee Gayenell Chudej Victoria Zak —SPJST—

In Memory of Dorothy Kacir Dorothy May Kacir, age 90, of Temple, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, June 7, 2022. A private service for the immediate family will be held at a later date.

Dorothy was born to Sam R. and Vera May Hyatt Wood in Cisco on July 21, 1931. The family moved to Austin when she was a young child.

She married SidDorothy Kacir ney Kacir on June 10, 1955, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and they enjoyed 66 years of married life together.

She graduated from Austin High School and attended the University of Texas at Austin. In 1953, she graduated from Seton School of Nursing in Austin as a registered nurse. She worked at the VA Hospital in Temple as a registered nurse until she married Sidney in 1955 and became a homemaker. During her time in nursing school and at the VA, she made many lifelong friends. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 87, Temple and RVOS Lodge 5.

She went by many names - Dorothy,

Dottie, Dot, Slats, and Gabby, but was known as Dot, mama, and mema to those who loved her most. Her family was her everything, and she was a loving, caring, devoted, and supportive wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a relentless advocate for her special needs grandson, George. From room mother and school activities, to dance mom, to soccer grandma, she never missed a school event or recital and was always there for her children and grandchildren in every way.

Dorothy loved animals and began rescuing them at a young age. From orphaned baby birds, squirrels, and calves to every stray dog and cat in the neighborhood, and every type of animal inbetween, she took them in and cared for them and found good homes for the ones her kids couldn’t convince her to keep. It wasn’t unusual to see her around town with a dog, cat, or calf in the back seat of her car. She also enjoyed traveling, especially to the mountains. The family took many memorable road trips to the American West and Canadian Rockies. She and Sidney also took trips to many of the same places with their grandchildren. She was tough and determined and could do anything she put her mind to including a hike to Angel Glacier with her grandchildren when she was in her 80s.

Fridays were her day. After her weekly visit to the beauty shop, she went to Scott & White for her allergy shot, and afterwards ate out or picked up something for supper. She would order the largest dinner on the menu and finish every bite or spend hours at Luby’s or buffets eating and visiting with family, friends, and the staff. She never met a stranger and enjoyed laughing and talking with everyone she met especially her pals at the allergy clinic, beauty shop, stores, and restaurants she frequented.

She would pretty much know your life story after a conversation or two and would remember everything about you and the talks you shared.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and sister Mary Troutman.

Survivors include daughters Donna Waskow and Linda Hopper (husband James); son Dan Kacir; grandchildren George Hopper, Jennifer Ashley Hopper, Charles Kacir, and Samantha Kacir; brother Wayne Wood; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In Memory of Alice Sulak Alice A. Sulak, age 91, of Temple, Texas, passed away on Monday, June 20, 2022, at a local care center.

Visitation was Friday, June 24 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home in Temple. A funeral service was Saturday, June 25 at 10 a.m. at Seaton Brethren Church followed by burial at Seaton CemeAlice Sulak tery.

Alice was born on January 17, 1931, in Seaton the daughter of Tom and Tracy Motl Sefcik.

She was a lifelong proprietor of Sefcik Hall in Seaton, where she started out helping her father Tom Sefcik with the business and upon his death, took over

running the business. She was a musician having played the saxophone with “Jerry Haisler and the Melody 5” (formerly Otis Beck & “The Melody Five”) and “Adela and the Music Masters.”

She received The Texas Dance Hall Preservation Lifetime Achievement award in 2019 and was featured in many publications for her music and for the dance hall. The city of Temple declared that November 17 to be Alice Sefcik Sulak Day. Alice was a talented musician who played various instruments including the accordion, drums, and keyboard with many musicians and her house band.

She was a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister Adela Urubek.

She is survived by children Tommie Sulak and wife Linda of Temple, Steven Sulak and wife Brenda of Grapevine, and Kenny Sulak and wife Irene of Tem-

ple; grandchildren Jonathan Sulak and wife Emily, Alek Sulak, Sterling Sulak, Shelby Beck and husband John, and Shannon Strong and husband Patrick; and great-granddaughter Scout Anna Beck.

Alice’s presence, unique conversations, and respect for all her customers will be greatly missed.

In Memory of Melinda Bigham, Camp Kubena Hospitality Manager July 7, 1971 to June 18, 2022 Melinda DeeAnne Bigham of Ledbetter, Texas, passed away in Austin on Saturday, June 18, 2022.

Visitation was Wednesday, June 22 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Boze Mitchell McKibben Funeral Home in Ennis.

She was born to Lloyd and Retha Bigham on July 7, 1971, in Corsicana. Melinda was very family-oriented and loved spending quality time with her children and grandchildren. She was full of life and often referred to as the life of the party. She was independent and worked very hard in life but always carried a smile on her face. In the past year, she worked at and resided at SPJST’s Camp Kubena where she felt the most joy and happiness.

Melinda is survived by son Michael Salik and wife Kathryn; daughter Adrianna Diaz; mother Retha Bigham; grandchildren Diesel Salik, Miyah Jones, and Derrick Jones III; siblings Melody Bigham and Randy Bigham; nephew Jakob Bigham; boyfriend David Motley; and a host of many friends.

May she rest in eternal peace.

We both thank our leaders, parents, the Executive Committee, Director Jesse Pospisil and Linda, State Fraternal Director Frank Horak, Vice President of Communications Melanie Zavodny, and Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez and all involved with the youth program for the tremendous support you all give to us and our youth in District Two! The tremendous love and support the District Two members give to our youth is overwhelming! Amber and I remind our youth about the fun times, the trips, food, and prizes they receive are given by so many individuals. Each year, we are amazed at the generosity of the members and friends who support our youth silent auction at our District Two Annual Meeting. This year was unbelievable! Many brought not only one item, but several items, which included many home-baked desserts, canned, or fresh vegetables for the auction along with a lot of crafts and usable items.

And, these members do not stop here.

They then bid until the very end, determined to get what they want. It is such a fun time, especially when you have a husband and wife bidding against other.

True fraternalism! We had 51 items with a very nice profit! Thank you to all who helped with this event!

Dear Readers, So far this summer, I helped clean up a house that burned. I like helping. It was my aunt’s house. I went to Hawaiian Falls water park. I am going every week. I am going to love it. I hope everyone has a good summer.

Dear Vestnik Readers, Next month, I’m going to Galveston.

I will probably not have fun. Wait, what? Of course, I will have fun at the beach. I can’t wait!

Next year, I am going to be in second grade. I will have fun.

I’m enjoying summer break. Yesterday, we went to the pool and then we went to Treno Pizzeria. I went with my buddy. My brother and his buddy came with me, too. It was actually pretty fun.

Treno has a super cool playground.

I have a little puppy dog. Her name is Lily. She gets to sleep in my bed with me on the weekends. She is really squirmy. She got to sleep with me last night.

Lodge 47, Seaton youth helps at annual picnic Dear Vestnik Readers, It is finally June! I am really excited for summer vacation! I think the best month will be July, because of camp.

We are also going to go to the beach.

This month, we are going to a fun youth club! We had our picnic on Sunday, and it went pretty well. I enjoyed it. I helped with the drive-through line. Right now, I am working on YAD projects. I want to get a lot of money off of it this year. I will talk to you in July.

Lodge 25, Ennis youth: summertime farm visit Dear Readers, I brought my dog to the farm for the first time. She loved it. She went swimming in the pond, and she loved everything about it! We went fishing, and I caught three fish and my cousin only caught one. After that, there was a snake in the water and my dad was about to shoot it, but it didn’t pop up again and as I’m writing this, I am about to ride in a Kabota so I have to go.

Czech Republic Supports the Will of Ukraine for Freedom, Democracy

I was recently asked by Ceske Oznameni Editor Sara Barton if I could report on how the Russian invasion of Ukraine has impacted the Czech Republic. I am happy to oblige. Please know that my submission is based on information that is publicly accessible.

Any discussion relating to the current state of affairs in Ukraine and its impact on the Czech Republic is best supplemented with a little geography and historical footnoting. From the map here you can see that Prague is located 729 miles west of Kiev, Ukraine’s capital city; however, the distance – in a direct line – from the eastern border of the Czech Republic to the western border of Ukraine is less than 200 miles. It is also noteworthy to point out that Prague is approximately1252 miles from the Crimean Peninsula. This is the area that Russia annexed in 2014.

Russia’s claim to Crimea dates back to 1793 when Russia colonized Crimea during the reign of Catherine the Great.

Crimea became a part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) in 1922. Ironically, perhaps, Crimea was transferred – as a stated goodwill gesture – by the USSR to the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1954. Even so, the transfer was in violation of the USSR’s Constitution which prohibited the state from altering the borders of a republic; however, it was not strongly protested at the time. Historians have characterized the transfer of Crimea to the Ukraine as an effort on the part of the Supreme Soviet to solidify its hold on the Ukraine.

The reassignment meant that approximately 860,000 ethnic Russians would be joining the already large Russian mi-

nority in Ukraine, thereby bolstering Soviet control.

Fast forward to the early 1990s and the Supreme Council of Crimea’s declaration of independence for a Republic of Crimea. Subsequently, the parliament of the Russian Federation voted on May 21, 1992 to confirm that the decision of the Supreme Soviet to transfer the Crimean Region from the USSR to the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic had no legal force since its adoption was in violation of the Constitution.

In 1994, Crimea – which recognized as an Autonomous Republic within Ukraine – elected a president who supported reunification with Russia. In response, Ukraine’s leadership abolished the Crimean Constitution and the position of Crimean president, while banning all of the parties that had comprised the majority in the Crimean parliament.

Fast forward to 2014: In February and March of that year, Russian troops occupied Crimea. In March of that same year, a referendum vote was held and the residents of Crimea voted by an overwhelming majority to secede from Ukraine and be reunited with Russia. The United States and European nations condemned the ballot as illegal and destabilizing; nevertheless, Russia annexed the Crimean Peninsula. In response, a United Nations resolution was issued in March 2014 denoting that Crimea was still considered to be a part of Ukraine. Since the annexation, Russia has directed billions of dollars into Crimea’s infrastructure, including the highway and railroad bridges that now cross the Kerch Strait to link Crimea directly to Russia.

In the eight years which preceded the February 24, 2022 Russian invasion, Ukrainian forces have been fighting Rus-

sian-backed separatists for control over much of the two heavily industrialized south eastern regions of the Ukraine.

These are the areas known as Donetsk and Luhansk and they are collectively known as Donbass Region.

On February 21 of this year, the Russian government recognized the independence of the two breakaway republics of Donetsk and Luhansk. On February 24, Russia forces penetrated the Ukraine on several fronts leading to a major inva-

freedom and for the values of democracy, often taking a lead in demonstrating its support. Heightened tensions were brewing between Russia and Ukraine back in December. It was at that time that the Czech Ministry of Defense went about the task of identifying weapons systems that would be operable with and strategically beneficial to the Ukrainian military.

On the day of the invasion, the Ukrainian and Czech governments began working on the logistics that would get the arma-

sion which continues as of this writing.

The armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine goes back to 2014 following the Russian annexation of the Crimean Peninsula. These skirmishes resulted in the death of approximately 14,000 people – mostly soldiers.

For many older Czechs, the invasion brought back painful memories of the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1968. Pictured here is a scene from the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia which took place from August 1968 to August 1969.

Like the majority of Central European nations, the Czech Republic has been supportive of the will of the Ukraine for

The Czech Republic’s response to the Russian military presence in Ukraine mirrors that of the European Union, the United States and much of the free world. The Czech Republic was actually one of the first nations to close its airspace to Russia air traffic on February 25.

Within the first month of fighting – on March 15 – Czech Prime Minister Peter Fiala, left, – was accompanied by the prime ministers of Poland and Slovenia and visited Kyiv – which was under rocket attack – to meet with President Zelensky in a display of solidarity. The

visit was noteworthy in that this was the first visit by foreign leaders to Kyiv since the start of the Russian invasion and was hailed by President Zelensky as a "great, brave, correct, and sincere step."

On March 3, Prime Minister Fiala and Czech President Milos Zeman announced that Czechs who leave for the Ukraine and help to defend it against the Russian invasion would not face punishment. The law prevents Czechs from serving in an army other than their country’s, slapping a prison sentence of up to five years on offenders. To date, approximately 100 Czech volunteers have received official permission to fight alongside Ukraine's armed forces, though the actual total number of Czechs fighting in Ukraine is not known. The arms industry represents an area where the Czech Republic is well-positioned to support Ukraine. Going back to Cold War days, the Czech arms industry was one of the largest in the Warsaw Pact. The Czech Republic was the first country to provide Ukraine with Soviet era tanks. It also provided artillery and infantry fighting vehicles. Due to both the Czech Republic and Ukraine’s historical ties to the Soviet Union, both field similar weapons systems, which allowed the Ukrainians to use the Czech armaments effectively and with little training.

On May 29, Czech Defense Minister Jana Cernochova stated in a Radio Free Europe article, that the Czech Republic had sent more than $150 million in military aid supplies since the start of Russia's invasion on February 24 and that an additional $26 million to $30 million in armaments would be forthcoming. Czech media reported that T-72 tanks, BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicles, Dana howitzers, and potentially Soviet-made combat helicopters would be among the supplies provided.

Through June 13, the Czech Republic had issued 371,282 temporary protection visas to Ukrainian refugees. Even prior to the events of February 2022, Ukrainians were by far the largest group of immigrants by nationality, living and

Monday, June 27, 2022 working in the Czech Republic. It was typical for the Ukranians who were working in the Czech Republic to send home some of the money that they earned to support their families living back in Ukraine.

Initially, many of the refugees arrived in the Czech Republic by train. At the Prague main train station, pictured here, volunteers provided the Ukranians with orientation information and directed them to places where they could eat, rest and secure accommodations. On May 14, the Labor Office of the Czech Republic reported that 35,943 Ukrainian refugees had found employment in the Czech Republic. That’s noteworthy when you consider that many of the refugees coming into the Czech Republic are women with children, whose primary focus is the provision of care for their children and

The sign went up on April 22. As a result, anyone who writes a letter to the Russian Embassy will have to think about the victims of Russian aggression as well as the Ukrainian heroes.

There’s a place in Prague that’s known as the Lennon Wall that symbolizes freedom of speech and the non-violent resistance of the Czech youth. The wall started in 1980, shortly after John Lennon was murdered. Young artists and activists took to the wall to continually share messages of happiness and freedom during the Communist era. From the start, Communist authorities would routinely whitewash the messages that were shared but the activists were persistent in spreading their message.

Whether their artwork was painted over, surveillance cameras were put in place,

accommodation. The report went on to say that 63 percent of Czechs had actively assisted refugees or participated in providing them support.

Russians comprise approximately seven percent of foreigners with residence permits who are living in the Czech Republic. On March 26, members of Prague's Russian community participated in an anti-war demonstration, protesting Russia's invasion of Ukraine, in Prague.

Czech humor – often cited as “black” humor -- represents a blend of irony and sarcasm that has helped the Czech people maintain a positive attitude during some very dark periods of their history. Prague municipal lawmakers displayed a hint of that sardonic humor recently when they approved a proposal to rename one of the streets that runs in front of the Russian

The works were submitted by writers across the world to a Prague-based online poetry platform entitled, “Make Poetry Not War, Poems for the People of Ukraine,” with over 1,800 pages of verse.

On April 24, the Czech Finance Minister Zbyněk Stanjura said on television that Russian property in its territory worth nearly one billion crowns ($43 million) had been frozen. He went on to say that the properties may be confiscated in future.

On May 10, The UN General Assembly voted overwhelmingly for the Czech Republic to replace Russia on the Human Rights Council following their

suspension over allegations of horrific rights violations by Russian soldiers in Ukraine. In the secret ballot vote, 180 of the General Assembly’s 193 members deposited ballots. The result was 157 countries in favor of the Czech Republic and 23 abstentions.

On May 11, the upper house of Czech parliament passed a resolution, voting 55 – 1, urging the government to recognize suspected war crimes in Ukraine as genocide. The resolution also called for the Czech government to “accelerate” military support to Kyiv, to support Ukraine in gaining European Union candidate status, and to back the country’s complaints against Russia before the International Court of Justice.

On July 1, the Czech Republic assumes the presidency of the Council of European Union from France. The Council is a European Union institution where the Member States advance their national interests and express attitudes on significant political decisions and legislative proposals. The presidency of the Council rotates among the EU Member States every six months according to an order established in advance. The presidency is considered to be one of the most important instruments to enhance the prestige of the lead nation and the interests of individual Member States. During its sixmonth term, Prague will lead the diplomatic work, a critical role in shaping the EU’s agenda.

The overall objective of the Czech Presidency will be “to contribute as much as possible to creating the conditions for the security and prosperity of the EU in the context of the European values of freedom, social justice, democracy and the rule of law and environmental responsibility.” Further, Prague is determined to work with the European Commission to reallocate EU funding in favor of the member states that have opened their doors to refugees, helping them put in place the necessary structures to manage the humanitarian crisis. Following the end of the hostilities, the crucial task will be the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine.
