CANOEING THE COLORADO WITH CAMP KUBENA Shooting the rapids with his brother, sleeping under the stars next to a river, roasting s’mores on an open campfire with his dad. These are the fantastic experiences Camp Kubena Executive Director Rob Clift had growing up on the rivers of Texas. “Every time I cross the Colorado River . . . and when you live in Central Texas, that’s many times . . . I can’t help but hear the words of ‘The Texas River Song,’ sung by Lyle Lovett . . . ‘and the crooked Colorado runs weaving and winding,’” says Rob. “I want more people to have the opportunity to experience this uniquely Texas river trip,” he says. Rob is the executive camp director at Camp Kubena, a 182 acre outdoor conference, retreat, and summer camp destination that focuses on impacting lives through positive outdoor experiences. The facility is owned by SPJST. Inspired by his childhood canoeing adventures, Rob recently developed a challenging, exciting, and safe program to canoe a beautiful section of the Colorado River from Smithville to La
Grange. “The canoe guides at Camp Kubena are expertly trained by one of Texas’ best and most experienced training organizations, The Expedition School,” Rob says. “Because of Camp Kubena’s amazing facilities such as our beautiful lake, relaxing sleeping lodges, and fantastic dining hall, we are able to provide the proper training and safety information needed for canoeing the Colorado River. We want to make sure our customers have that positive outdoor experience and create memories that will last a lifetime.” To experience the Colorado River in Texas, is to experience peace, quietness, and reflection. It could be the kingfisher bird looking for its next meal, or maybe a white tail deer taking a sip of water. It’s also the excitement of a small section of swift water to navigate or enjoy a delicious lunch on an island of sand in the middle of the river. Finally, there is nothing better to quench the Texas heat than a nice dip in the cool water of the Colorado River.
