Grand Christmas Celebration

Hats off to the fraternalists in Dallas who celebrated their Christmas party in grand style on Sunday, December 5 by bringing together members from SPJST, KJT, KJZT, and Better Life (Western Fraternal Life) at Sokol Hall in Dallas. Doors opened at 11 a.m. followed by a Mass, social hour, visit from Santa, lunch, music, and dancing. Additionally, there was a canned good collection for an area food pantry, games, and prize drawings. With each of the organizations working together, they were able to combine resources to deliver a wonderful event and foster a sense of togetherness, gratitude, and Christmas cheer!

District Four Youth’s Christmas Trolley Trip

District Four youth gathered for a Christmas party on Saturday, December 11 in San Angelo. Youth enjoyed a trolley ride to look at Christmas lights.

The evening also included an ornament contest and opening presents after the trolley ride. “The kids had a lot of fun,” reports District Four Youth Counselor Ryan Jansa.

As the New Year approaches, I hope it is filled with the promises of a brighter tomorrow. Here’s a little pick-me-up going into this new 2022 year!

Every end marks a new beginning.

Keep your spirits and determination unshaken, and you shall always walk the glory road. With courage, faith, and great effort, you shall achieve everything you desire.

No one can go back in time to change what has happened, so work on your present to make yourself a wonderful future.

End each year with a few good lessons and start the new one by showing that you have learnt the lessons of the past well.

On the road to success, the rule is always to look ahead. May you reach your destination and may your journey be wonderful.

The Assistant Controller assists the Controller to ensure accounting and finance activities are performed in accordance with Statutory Principles and other Company practices, policies, and procedures. This position also supervises the work of others in the accounting department.

• Works with external auditors in the preparation of the annual audit report and with the Texas Department of Insurance in the preparation of their audit report. This necessitates the preparation of multiple supporting schedules.

• Assists in maintaining accounting records and transactions for local lodges. This includes automated and manual procedures.

• Maintains accurate account of all receipts and disbursements. Prepares all monthly reports, statements, and supplements.

• Assists in establishing business plan and expense budget for Information Technology department. As such, consults with users to discuss their needs for new programs or changes to existing programs. Reviews and analyzes new products and technology.

• Manages general banking activities and reconciles all bank statements.

Downloads monthly bank statements and account activity. Transmits ACH payments to lodges and youth leaders.

Drafts annuity payments and medical reimbursements.

• Files all necessary reports with the Texas Department of Insurance.

• Maintains exact information of all members of every lodge. This includes paid to dates, amount of insurance and

I want to wish our members and lodge officers a happy New Year. I hope during the Christmas holidays, you were able to spend time with your family. I know we all hope that 2022 is a better year and that we can move forward and away from what we have experienced the last two years.

Now that our son Jacob has completed college and is working full-time, and daughter Shelby will be finishing college in May, Christmas was celebrated when we all could be together.

I’m thankful we could spend the short amount of time we had together. When our children were little, I liked to go all out on decorating our house for Christmas. This year, I decided we needed a little cheer. After cleaning out my storage building, I de-

cided it was time to go all out again and bring some Christmas cheer! I’m including a few photos from around our house.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Annie Vahalik reported on upcoming activities including domino tournaments. We are also collecting plastic caps from medicine bottles, water, detergent, and any plastic lids. They will be used to make a bench for the VA Clinic in Victoria. We are joining with the VFW Auxiliaries with this project.

Česko Národní Hřbitov - založen roku 1912. Czech National Cemetery, founded in 1912, is located in East Bernard, Texas. The cemetery sign and gates were recently updated. Donnie Kelner repainted the gates and poles, and the lettering was added by artist Sabah Sadoun. Lodge 28, East Bernard members Tony and Helen Kelner worked to beautify the cemetery by removing limbs from the graves.

Lodge 24, Cyclone held a party for everyone who worked at the fundraiser meal on October 31. This included their families, too. The affair was held at Oscar Store, and the meal consisted of a large hamburger and fries. The writer could not get the whole thing down!

Oscar Store did a great job.

President Daniel Wilde was the leader. He asked everyone to recite the Pledge of Allegiance and observed a si-

lent prayer to start, and a prayer was said before the meal.

The board of trustees had a meeting to elect officers for the next year. Jason Hoelscher is president, and Cathy Bruggman is secretary. This is a requirement of the State of Texas. If no one would serve, we could not have a lodge.

President Wilde had a ceremony honoring our deceased members of last year.

Many pictures were taken, including group photos of former Lodge 24 Youth Club members and youth leaders, past lodge presidents, and several more groups. District Two Director Jesse Pospisil installed the 2022 officers. Later,

President Wilde gave out door prizes.

There were many, and everyone had at least one prize. Reminds me of everyone having an office. A Christmas song was sang as the last function.

Special guests were District Two Director Pospisil and wife Linda and Vice President of Communications Melanie Zavodny and husband David.

Cathy Bruggman did most of the planning as the Wildes were on a cruise.

We are in Cathy’s debt.

Lodge 32, Victoria members celebrate Christmas We held our Christmas party at Red Lobster on Tuesday, December 7, 2021.

It was nice to see people in Christmas shirts and sparkly skirts, velvet jackets, as well as Christmas jewelry - what a way to set the Christmas spirit!

This night was celebrating the commercial side of Christmas – it’s always fun to celebrate with lights on our houses, putting up a tree and giving presents – and children (well, adults, too) anticipate Santa coming if they’re “nice” and not “naughty.”

But we all know the spiritual side of Christmas means that Baby Jesus was born in a manger, and we celebrate His birthday on December 25.

We can celebrate both sides of Christmas and have a wonderful Christmas season - as long as we keep CHRIST in Christmas.

Next Meeting—January 13 The next meeting will be Thursday, January 13, 2022. We will meet at 6:30 p.m. at Grapevine Café, 110 Medical Drive, Suite 102.

Lodge 81, Needville to repurpose room for youth The December 2021 meeting of SPJST Lodge 81, Needville was held on Sunday, the 19th. At 12 noon, a prayer of thanks was given by President Vincent Newman, and everyone enjoyed honey-baked ham and sausage.

Members brought side dishes and desserts.

We kept John Pavlock on our sick list. We pray that he will begin healing soon. We also added social member Gloria Wood to our sick list.

President Vincent Newman called the business meeting to order at 1:06 p.m.

Everyone recited the Pledge of Allegiance led by the youth. All officers answered the roll call.

Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall read her minutes, and they were approved as read. Bradley Stavinoha read the treasurer’s report, and it was approved as read. Special Funds Chair Marion Morales read his report, and it was approved as read.

Under old business, the new stove was delivered. Also, under old business, Hall Manager Marion Morales said the outside doors were painted, and he’s planning to transform the old storage room into a youth room for the youth to meet in.

Under new business, we had the installation of officers.

Under other business, the youth prepared Christmas bags for all the members. They did a wonderful job decorating the bags and making ornaments for each one. Karen Hargraves gave the youth report.

Lodge 88, Houston member Ruby Bulanek achieves Grand Age of 96 SPJST congratulates Sister Ruby Orsak Bulanek of Lodge 88, Houston, who celebrated her 96th birthday on November 5, 2021. Sister Ruby now receives all SPJST benefits with no further dues or assessments.

Ruby was born to Emmett and Eloise Orsak in Sheldon, Texas, on November

5, 1925. She has two brothers - Emil Orsak and Adolph Orsak and three sisters - Albina Orsak, Katy Thompson, and Jeffie Thompson. She also has five step-brothers - Edward Kopinitz, Johnnie Kopinitz, Gus Kopinitz, Martin Kopinitz, and Sigmund Kopinitz.

Ruby met Pete Paul Bulanek, and they were married on May 10, 1947, in Sheldon. The couple was blessed with son Gary Lee Bulanek (Cindy) of Houston and daughter Peggy Ann Perry (Doyle, Jr.) of Crosby. Ruby was a housewife, and Pete worked for Armco Steel Railroad as an engineer.

to hunt squirrels and deer. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, listening to and watching baseball games (Houston Astros), canning, and baking kolaches. She has always been fond of Czech music, looking at pictures of olden days, her dog Bruno, and spending time with caregiver Anna Hernandez - exchanging stories about the families and friends.

Anna was also Pete’s caregiver and is considered to be part of their family.

Lodge 94, Wheelock member Rose Lys achieves Grand Age of 96 SPJST congratulates Sister Rose Lydia Krobot Lys of Lodge 94, Wheelock, who celebrated her 96th birthday on November 25, 2021. Sister Rose now receives all SPJST benefits with no further dues or assessments.

Rose was born in Houston, Harris County, Texas, on November 25, 1925, to Frank J. Krobot and Lydia Tracy Dockal Krobot. Rose lived in the Addicks-Houston area and attended Addicks and Houston schools. The family also lived in the Alief area of Houston on a family farm next to her grandmother, Anna Schiller Dockal, until December 1942, when her parents moved to a farm in Caldwell. She finished her senior year of high school in Caldwell and graduated in May 1943.

On November 1, 1943, she joined the United States World War II Cadet Nursing Corps. She was admitted to Brackenridge in Austin and served the required three years of training and became a registered nurse on November 15, 1946.

After graduating, Rose worked the night shift in the maternity ward of Brackenridge for six months. After Rose left Brackenridge Hospital, she worked at the hospital in Taylor until her aunt

had her first child and needed help afterwards in Houston.

At some point, she returned home to visit her parents and was there when she met her future husband at a Fourth of July dance in Deanville in 1947. They were married on April 2, 1948, in the new parsonage of the Czech Moravian Brethren Church in Caldwell. The wedding was officiated by Reverend H.E. Beseda. Rose and Joe were the first couple to be married in the newly completed parsonage.

Joe and Rose made their home in Bryan where Joe worked for the telephone company. Joe passed away in July 2007 in Bryan.

Rose is the oldest of three children.

Her siblings are sister Martha Krobot Brymer of Caldwell and brother Stanley Frank Krobot (deceased in 2012). Her sister-in-law (Stanley’s wife) is Alice Krobot of Caldwell.

Rose’s family includes daughter Janice Martin (husband Don) of Bryan; son Donald Lys (deceased in August 2007); daughter-in-law (Donald’s wife) Sharalynne of Bryan; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Rose currently lives with her daughter and son-in-law in Bryan.

When her children were growing up, Rose’s hobbies included sewing, embroidery, planting flowers and working in her flower beds, reading, playing dominoes with friends and family, and going to SPJST dances. She loved to dance, and now she enjoys listening to Czech music. Rose is still an avid reader.

She reads the local newspaper and her magazines from cover to cover. When her children were growing up, she loved to bake cakes, pies, cinnamon rolls, and cookies - especially bar cookies.

Lodge 187 Round Rock members gather for Thanksgiving meal Hello, and hope all is well!

We welcomed guest Nancy Mangum. It was great seeing Virginia Hrachovy.

We discussed the lodge signs and where it would be most beneficial to install. We deliberated about what charities to donate to and voted on the ones that we were going to help.

Landscaping improvements were also mentioned.

Birthdays in November were Linda Johnson on the 22nd; Ashley Smith on the 15th; Eldon Lange on the 20th; Kember and Kadnce Meyer on the 4th; Lana Michalski on the 25th; Cale Rohlack on the 5th; and Deandra Barron Roman on the 18th.

The next gathering will be on December 12 at 2 p.m. We will have our traditional fajitas dinner so just bring the sweets. We will also have our gift exchange. All gifts should be new and from $10 to $15 and gender neutral. If you want to join in the fun, please bring a gift for each person participating.

Don’t forget to bring a gift for any little ones that you may bring so that they can join in on the fun, too.

it will be looked into after the holidays.

We also talked about getting someone to hang up all the lights in the trees and someone to refresh the paint on our existing lodge sign. Board and executive members positions were also discussed and will continue in January.

We had such a great time with the gift exchange. I truly know that all enjoyed the fajita Christmas dinner and all the sweets. Thank you so much to Rubie Volek for getting the dinner together.

Also, a huge thanks to Carla Krenek for the gifts to the youth group. They were all so surprised!

Lodge 246 Morgan’s Point gives to Feed My Sheep Dear Members, Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point met Wednesday, November 10, 2021, at Olive Garden in Temple. Special guests were District Two Director Jesse Pospisil and wife Linda.

The meeting was called to order by President Ingrid Petrik. Routine reports were presented by Vice President Susan Hutton, Treasurer David Nauert, and Melanie Zavodny.

New lodge members include John Paruzinski, Jr., Timothy Weddle, Dana Boyd, and Tyrice Green. The lodge welcomes the new members and is grateful to Sales Agents Terry Malina, Ronnie Gaines, and Marissa Salinas.

Members discussed various holiday projects and decided to support Feed My Sheep with a monetary donation and Christmas bags with socks, candy, and goodies. District Two Director Pospisil announced that he would match the lodge’s donation with his discretionary fund.

Cedar Tree Christmas by d.knape

About two weeks before grandpa would go out into the woods and chop down a Cedar tree for Christmas then he’d throw it on a sled (not a fancy sled like you see on postcards now but more like a wood pallet) pulled with chain harness by old Charley the sway back horse grandpa kept for sentimental reasons and he’d bring the tree up to the farm house and unload it there by the picket fence and then turn old Charley out for grazing (there was still some green winter grass behind the barn) then granddad would heave the Cedar tree up the steps into the house and set it up in the corner

back when Christmas meant something besides greed and excess so love was what was exchanged and that love is still remembered and that homemade Christmas tree still sits in a corner of this little boy’s memory you cannot forget a Christmas like that the Cedar Tree Christmas of so long long ago.

Christmas Tree by d.knape

The Sumac is a scrawny tree more a bush or shrub than a real tree it grows along the fence-lines on hard rock and little dirt through the barbed wire fences along the sides of roads anyplace that is neglected or forgotten it takes root in next to nothing and somehow thrives a scrappy tree struggling to get to decent height it is always in the shadows of larger trees but it has one outstanding character and that is its brilliant color in the fall all aflame in red and gold and yellow it sparks the countryside in beautiful colors providing cheer like Christmas decorations for all who take the time to absorb their beauty they negate all the other trees which have grown dormant and drab and so we seek them out like poor relatives they come along with nothing but leave us in awe at their pure hardiness and determination growing where nothing else will grow they show us how to live.

Lodge 49, Rowena youth celebrates 16th birthday Dear SPJST, My 16th birthday was last week, and I got my license on Friday. I’m so excited to be driving on my own and not having to have my mom in the front seat.

This week will be busy with school finals. Then I’m on Christmas break. I hope to work and make some money.

Various collections that are collected, conserved, studied, and exhibited in museums. All kinds of things can be found among them: minerals, dinosaur skeletons, or even technical inventions, but in museums, we can also learn about intangible heritage. Another inspiration can be galleries and museums of art with famous artworks. Museums are often beautiful buildings, but sometimes they don’t even need a roof – all over the world, open air museums show traditions of ancestors to people and the beauty of the landscape that they grew in. Botanical and zoological gardens are also special kinds of museums.

Museum is like a living organism with its own structure: many people take part in its daily life. Scientists and historians, security guards, archivists, custodians . . . and of course, visitors.

And if there is no museum close to you, perhaps you have your own collections of personal treasures.

What would the museum of your dreams be like?

I hope everyone is getting into the holiday spirit. December has been busy!

I had a holiday band concert, cheer Christmas party, and was honored at the Navarro ISD school board meeting for

being the seventh grade Superintendent Scholar for December. Merry Christmas to everyone!

Competition and Exhibition The entries will be evaluated by a panel of judges in two rounds. Artworks that receive an award will be exhibited on the annual exhibition at the Lidice Gallery from June 2022 and awarded 2D artworks subsequently archived.

Eligibility Conditions The exhibition is open only to children at the age of 4 to 16, both as individuals and as representatives of schools and art clubs. People with disabilities can enter the exhibition at any age

(please indicate “disability,” the type of disability, and the age of the participant).

The maximum format for a 2D entry is 70 × 50 cm.

The maximum format for a 3D entry is 100 × 70 × 40 cm, max. weight 10 kg.

A maximum of two entries of the same technique (painting and drawing, printmaking, mixed media, photography, film/animation, art objects) by one artist is acceptable. One artist can participate with entries in multiple techniques.

Use spray fixative for entries created in paints that can be dusted or wiped off.

Only photos on good-quality paper are acceptable.

Films - short films and animations up to 3 minutes in length. For further specifications (eligibility criteria, the process of making films, registration of a film) see below.

Only original artworks are acceptable. Copies, xerox copies, or electronic copies will not be eligible for assessment.

Katie Daugherty was born a few days before Christmas and grew up in the small, rural town of Chardon, Ohio, near the city of Cleveland. Her town is known for the massive maple syrup industry, along with the town’s own Maple Festival and the record amounts of snow: over 100 inches of snowfall each year due to the city’s location along the “snow belt” of the Great Lakes.

Katie’s mom, Wendy, was on bed rest in the hospital with her for 62 days and says when they came home, the carpet in the house felt like she was walking on clouds! Katie’s dad, Doug, has been a high school principal and administrator at a career and technical center for 25 years and inspired her passion for education and working with youth.

Growing up spending most of her time outdoors, making memories at camp, and seeking out leadership experiences has inspired Katie to encourage young people to always keep learning how to become the best versions of themselves.

In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy We, the members of SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the family of FATHER TIMOTHY PATRICK BUCEK, who passed away on Saturday, December 4, 2021.

Family was present to receive friends on Sunday, December 12 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Industry with Vigil at 7 p.m. followed by the Rosary.

Family was also present to receive friends on Monday, Father Tim Bucek December 13 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Bellville with Vigil at 7 p.m. followed by the Rosary.

Mass of the Resurrection was recited at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, December 14 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, Father Ed Kucera, Father Eric Pitre, and Father Ron Cloutier as celebrants.

Graveside service followed at 3 p.m. in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Father Tim was born January 24, 1947, in Wharton, Texas. The son of Charlie, Jr. and Carrie (Schattel) Bucek, he grew up in Wharton, where he attended Holy Family and Wharton High School. He then attended the University of St. Thomas. From 1965 to 1972, Father Tim attended St. Mary Seminary.

He then spent three years in Richmond where he worked as a social worker.

From 1975 to 1976, Father Tim served at St. Michael’s in Houston as a Diaconate. Father Tim was ordained on May 15, 1976. His first priesthood was with St. Mary’s in Texas City from 1976 to 1978, before moving to St. Francis de Salles in Houston, where he served from 1978 to 1981. He was then with Sacred Heart in Conroe for one year. From 1981 to 1987, he was with St. Patrick’s in Galveston. In 1987, he moved to Sacred Heart in Brookshire where he re-

mained until 1998. At that time, Father Tim was called to Sts. Peter and Paul in Bellville and Immaculate Conception in Industry, where he remained until his retirement on November 12, 2021.

Father Tim was the near perfect balance of joy and empathy that made him relatable and a friend to many parishioners and non-parishioners alike. He just absolutely loved life. He enjoyed dining on fine cuisine, the peacefulness of gardening, and a good scotch and water with warmth that paled in comparison to the warmth of his personality. Father Tim also had a soft spot for his cars. He named every one of the vehicles. His most recent car was named “Carrie,” in honor of his mother.

In general, Father Tim enjoyed people. In social settings, his quickwitted humor always left those around him both trying to keep up and laughing hysterically once they finally did. He brought a light and a hope that lifted up countless people in the good and bad times.

Though he may have loved a lot, he would also draw a line in the sand and could be uncompromising. He hated the color blue and despised cilantro and raisins. He would not tolerate those who put themselves above others or the apathetic. In people’s most difficult of times, of which Father Tim saw many, he did not try to make things better. But, those he was there for knew he related and knew he cared, which eased a tremendous amount of pain.

Father Tim’s joy, demonstrated through his love of life and people, drew people into him. His empathy and realness made him a rock for many.

Father Tim was a member of SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton.

He was preceded in death by parents Charlie and Carrie Bucek; brother Charles Lynn Bucek; sister-in-law Henrietta Bucek; and close friend Joe Szvmczak.

Father Tim is survived by his sister Carolyn Bucek of Wharton; brothers Edwin Bucek and wife Margaret and David Bucek and wife Janie, both of Wharton, and Mike Bucek and wife Johnnie Sue of Arlington; numerous nieces and nephews; his best friends Joe and Mary Catherine Tambrella and Father Ed Kucera; his secretary Cassie Malinowski and husband Eddie and

their sons Layne, Levi, and Luke; and many dear friends.

Pallbearers were Chris Bucek, Cindy Smith, Chuck Bucek, D.C. Bucek, Joan Grudeski, Carol Harris, Patricia Shaw, and Mary Bucek. Honorary pallbearers were Layne Malinowski, Levi Malinowski, Luke Malinowski, Anthony Henry, and the Knights of Columbus Members from Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

In Memory of Justin Everett Justin Everett, age 27, of Temple, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, December 8, 2021, at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio.

Visitation was Tuesday, December 14 from 10:15 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. at Trinity Church of Temple, followed by a graveside service at Marak Cemetery.

He was born on December 8, 1994, in Temple.

Justin was a member of SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone Justin Everett and attended and assisted with many of the activities. He was also a member of Trinity Church of Temple where he enjoyed taking part in mission trips and youth ministries. Justin wrote articles for Texas Polka News and Vestnik. From the time he was a child, he enjoyed playing drums in a polka band.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Albina Vrazel.

Resolution of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge Hvezda Texasu, No. 47, Seaton, express our sincere sympathy to the family of our departed brother, ALTON LEE FRITZ. Alton Lee Fritz, age 93, of Temple, Texas, passed away on Thursday, December 9, 2021, at a local hospital. He was born on April 27, 1928, in Temple, the son of Willie Daniel and Annie (Lesikar) Fritz.

Visitation was Sunday, December 12 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Scanio Harper Funeral Home in Temple. Funeral service was MonAlton Fritz day, December 13 at 10 a.m. at East Highway Baptist Church in Temple.

Alton married the love of his life, Beverly Ann Hinch, on November 23, 1957.

He was a lifelong farmer having farmed his land and doing so until 80 years of age. He was a member and former deacon at East Highway Baptist Church in Temple. He was a lifelong member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton.

Alton farmed corn, milo, and cotton, raised beef, hogs, and Jersey cows, and was an avid gardener.

He was preceded in death by wife Beverly; parents Willie and Annie Fritz; brothers Earl Frits, Raymond Frits, Floyd Fritz, Delbert Frits, Jack Frits, W.D. Frits, and Daniel Fritz; and sisters Lorene Eickenhorst and Gladys Bean.

In Memory of Josephine Harrison Josephine Murrow Harrison (Mrs. Tom Harrison) passed away on Saturday, December 18, 2021.

Visitation was Tuesday, December 21 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home in Temple. Funeral service Wednesday, December 22 at 10 a.m. at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home with burial at Wilson Valley Cemetery.

Jo was born on March 5, 1939, in Little River, Texas, to Giles Nathan and Lorena Pruitt Murrow. She was raised around Troy graduating in 1958 Jo Harrison from Troy High School.

After graduation, she worked as a car hop at Dairy Mart in Temple. She met the love of her life, Tom Harrison, and they married in February 1958. They started their family in Temple. Through the years, they lived in Moody, Georgetown, Lakeway, returning to Moody in 1980, where Jo continued to live until 2014. Tom preceded her in death in November 1996. Together, they shared many interests and hobbies. Enjoying Sundays at the Little River Dragway with many of their friends, Jo was known to race a car or two herself.

Genealogy was her passion. She loved her days digging through libraries, old books, pictures, and cemeteries. If you needed family history, you went to Jo! She was a member of Moody Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary; “Cookie Mom” for the local Girl

VĚSTNÍK Scouts; and June Fest and Cotton Harvest Festival volunteer. The Cotton Harvest Festival parade was one of her favorite things, and she was proud to lead. Time was spent inviting, arranging, and getting her “line up” ready. She received numerous awards for her community involvement.

Jo was an elected member of the Moody City Council for 10-plus years. She was proud to be a member of The Eastern Star, Daughters of Republic of Texas, and participated in the Moody Masonic Lodge activities.

She and Tom were charter members of the SPJST Lodge 177, Academy.

She worked at Moody Care Center for 30-plus years. Being the activities director, she planned activities for the residents and their families.

Starting a new chapter of her life, she relocated to the Austin area to enjoy more time with her family. She participated in Games for Life, enjoying music, parties, senior trips, and her retirement. Jo loved to dance and has been known to play a little “Cajun music” with her friends. Weekends were reserved for Aggie and Dallas Cowboy football.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings T J Threadgill, Joe Lee Murrow, Lola Mae Grospiron, and Ophelia Arnold.

She leaves behind daughter Diana Klepac (Kenneth Akin) of De Leon; daughter Mary Galban (Victor) of Austin; son Richard Harrison (Becki) of Round Rock; grandchildren Brad Klepac (Stacy), Victoria Faulkner (JR), Brandon Galban, Derek Galban, Brandy Harrison Byers, James Harrison, and Shane Harrison; great-grandchildren Emery and Rennin Klepac, Halston, Steele and Hayes Faulkner, and Bryana Byers; brother Wilburn Murrow (Kathy) of Rogers; and many nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Brad Klepac, Brandon Galban, Derek Galban, JR Faulkner, John Gutierrez, and John Carpenter.

Honorary pallbearers were sons-in-law Victor Galban and Kenneth Akin.

Jo touched the lives of so many with her unconditional love and kindness.

She will forever be missed.

In Memory of Rita Janak Rita Agnes (Fikac) Janak of Smithville, Texas, passed on Sunday, October 10, 2021. She was 86 years old.

Visitation was from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 14 followed by rosary at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Marrs-Jones Funeral Home in Smithville. Mass was Friday, October 15 at 10 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Rita Janak Church in Smithville.

Rita was born on May 21, 1935, to Joseph and Cecilia Janak Fikac in Shiner. She was married to her husband, Johnnie Janak, for 63 years and together, they had five sons - Johnnie Joe, Ronald, Irvin, Alvin, and Shawn.

Rita was a devoted member of SPJST Lodge 38, Kovar. and St. Paul’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, gardening, playing bingo, visiting casinos, sitting on the front porch with her dog Precious, watching nature, and most of all, spending time with family especially the grandchildren. She had a long and love-filled life.

She was preceded in death by sons Alvin and Johnnie Joe Janak; brothers Joseph, Anthony, Leonard, Frank, and August Fikac and his wife, Janie; and sisters Eleanora Schaefer and Sidonia Klekar and her husband, Leon.

Rita is survived by husband Johnnie Janak of Smithville; son Ronald Janak of Smithville and his daughter, Lacey Lundgren and her husband, Dennis and their kids, Lane and Aspen; son Irvin Janak and his wife, Missy of Cedar Park and their daughters, Carleigh, Lexie, and Skylar; son Shawn Janak and his wife, Leticia of Kyle and their kids, Noah and Ysabella; sister Mary Deloach and husband Gordon of Victoria; sister Annie Wagner and husband Milton of Victoria; brother Paul Fikac and wife Carol of Houston; brother-in-law Calvin Schaefer of Hallettsville; sister-in-law Lillian Fikac of New Braunfels; sisterin-law JoAnn Fikac of New Braunfels; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by son Edwin Marek, Jr. in 2009.

New Year’s Eve traditions in the Czech Republic Let’s dive into the essence of Silvestr, the last day of the year in the Czech Republic.

New Year’s Eve Party When it comes to the night itself, Czech people fall into two categories: Those who enjoy wildly celebrating in a club or pub with a group of friends

(and quite possibly even the strangers who they meet for the first time) and the ones who celebrate from the comfort of their own homes.

It is no surprise that it is mostly the younger generation who embrace going out and enjoying a proper celebration while their parents usually prefer to stay at home, watching New Year’s Eve specials on TV. New Year’s Eve Refreshments Preparations for New Year’s Eve mostly include getting the food and refreshments ready.

Since by December 31, people have been eating mostly Christmas cookies and sweets for a week, most Czechs prefer to nibble on something savory.

Besides the typical, all-year-long eaten things such as chips or popcorn, Czech people enjoy making and mostly eating jednohubky (the base for jednohubky is a white bread called rohlík).

Jednohubky are pieces of savory rolls with toppings - spreads, salami, even pieces of fruit if you’re feeling fancy.

The other favorite option for Silvestr party food are obložené chlebíčky. These open-face sandwiches are topped with mayonnaise-based salads, ham, boiled egg, or decorative vegetable pieces.

New Year’s Toast After the clock strikes midnight, people join each other in a toast (novoroční přípitek). The toast is mostly done with alcoholic beverages such as sparkling wine or champagne. Popular sparkling wine in the Czech Republic is Bohemia Sekt, called “Bohemka.”

Czechs clink their glasses and wish each other Happy New Year filled with luck, health, and overall success and prosperity.

How to say Happy New Year in the Czech language? Šťastný Nový rok!

Midnight Fireworks Something that probably won’t surprise you is the popularity of midnight fireworks (ohňostroj).

New Year’s Eve and Day Superstitions There must not be any clothes hanging on a clothesline during the last night of the year, otherwise a member of the

family will die next year.

“Jak na Nový rok, tak po celý rok”: People are careful about the way they treat each other on New Year’s Day since they tend to believe that the way New Year’s Day is will determine the rest of the year.

When it comes to prosperity, people believe that eating lentils will bring them fortune and financial stability.

Most usually Czechs eat lentil soup (čočková polévka) or čočka na kyselo for New Year’s Day’s lunch.

Similarly, it is not recommended to eat poultry on New Year’s Day - your luck might fly away from you!
