One of the benefits that SPJST makes available to its members is a competitive scholarship program.

SPJST Scholarships were established in 1982. The SPJST Scholarship Program encourages and assists members to further their education and to help them achieve career goals.

We are currently accepting applications for SPJST Scholarships which will be awarded in May 2022. Applicants must meet the following criteria in order to be considered: • Applicants must be of upstanding moral character and have an active SPJST insurance certificate in force for at least one year as of February 1.

If the membership is in the form of an annuity, the amount must be at least $10,000.

• Applicants must be enrolling as a full-time student — at least 12 credit hours per semester.

• Applicants must hold an active SPJST insurance certificate and/or annuity for the duration of the scholarship.

• Applicants must be a high school graduate or equivalent.

• Applicants must attend an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or technical college – as designated

by one of the six regional accrediting bodies in the United States.

• Applicants apply online using this form. A receipt of application will be sent upon successful submission.

Czech Heritage Month Contests Special thanks to all who submitted entries in this year’s Vestnik Czech Heritage Month contests. The activities have appeared on the back pages of the September 27 and October 11 and 25 Vestniks. More than 130 entries were received. All entries were placed into a drawing, and 20 lucky winners were selected. The names appear on page 3.

These members will be receiving prizes in the mail soon. Thank you again for entering. Stay tuned to the Vestnik as we look forward to including more contests soon!

The SPJST District Two youth had a great time at the district fall fun day on Sunday, October 24, 2021, at Lodge 47, Seaton. What a fun day of many activities and getting to visit with one another. The activities were held outdoors under the pavilion, and the weather was perfect for the many youth and adult members and friends who attended.

This year’s theme was trunk-ortreat! Thank you to the lodge youth leaders and families who had their awesome decorated trunks full of candy and goodies: Lodge 20, Granger; Lodge 29, Taylor; Lodge 47, Seaton; Lodge 187, Round Rock; Lodge 182, Falls County; and Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point. Awesome, fun decorating! Thank you to

longtime Lodge 29, Taylor member Charlie Campbell, who participated with his vehicle and handed out candy.

We were glad he drove over to participate!

Youth and friends enjoyed wearing their costumes while playing games, including the bounce house, train ride, fish-pond, ring-a-drink, cake walk, and many more. Hot dogs with nachos and the works were served.

It’s Your Life

Christmas: ‘Tis the Season to be Stressed Since every store seems to have its

Christmas items out, I thought I would join the party. As if our life isn’t complicated enough, the Christmas season brings out the best and the worse in everyone. Unfortunate for many, with the best and the worse, stress comes along with it. It is the season with the highest stress rates. Christmas makes you happy, but it stresses you out just as much. As you get closer to “the date,” you get more and more stressed. If you are struggling, for whatever reason (physically, mentally, financially, etc), we know anxiety will rear its ugly head.

As my gift to you, I am hoping I can put your holiday season in perspective, and like that Lincoln car commercial, “make your stress float away.” I have no magic formula, but I do know how we all feel. Nobody is immune to the season’s follies. But we don’t need to stress out either.

The first and most important thing to remember is why we have Christmas. It is to celebrate our Lord and Savior. It is not about Santa, gifts, parties, lights, balloons, etc. Always remember the true reason. Never forget it. Keep it first on every list you write . . . Christmas gift list - Jesus is first. Grocery list - Jesus is first.

Things to do list - honor Jesus first. Make Jesus first always. When you are feeling stressed, down, hurt, confused, always always remember what we are truly celebrating.

Shopping for gifts for the family is probably one of the most stressful parts of the season. What if I buy the wrong gift, and they don’t like it? What if I can’t afford what my kids or grandkids want?

You lose sleep trying to think of that perfect gift. You stand in the aisle for a half hour holding what you think they may like. Then you get in line to buy it and

change your mind. Now more anxiety sets in. I have to start all over again looking. Every friend or family member I bought a gift for that they didn’t like still loves me today. They loved me before the holiday, and they love me after. If they didn’t get along with me before the holiday, we still won’t get along after.

Yes, there will be disappointment, but we all get over it and get on with our lives.

Your life and relationships will not change because of that gift, so don’t fret over it.

Gift exchanging at work, or other groups you are part of, can be just as stressful. Every single item on every store shelf is there because someone likes it. Candles, ties, socks, goofy novelty items. They exist because someone will use them. Don’t even let your mind occupy valuable time trying to figure out who would like what. Haven’t you ever got that gift yourself? What did you do with it? You re-gifted it to someone you know who likes those things. So if you have to get a gift for your company or small group exchange, just grab one and be done with it. If it is a goofy gift, you just did a favor for that person who got it. Now they won’t have to go buy a gift for someone else. You just did them a favor and saved time and anxiety trying to figure out a gift. What a great gift!

Don’t stress, just enjoy!

Lastly, that Santa thing. Let your kids enjoy Santa, but remind them what the true reason is for Christmas. It’s definitely not because of Santa. Teach them Santa is only part of the celebration of Jesus. He likes Jesus, too. Don’t let the kids stress you out because of the commercialization of that jolly old man. Always tie the celebration of Jesus’ birth with Santa, and you will find the kids will absorb the Jesus story just as easy as they absorb the Santa story. Jesus will always trump Santa if you keep them hand in hand.

The Christmas season can be very stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. Keep perspective on everything you do. Take

a deep breath and realize after the season, you will still be loved and your life will still go on. Keep the birth of Christ and the true reason we celebrate on the top of every list.

Take this article and put it on your refrigerator, tape it to your monitor, put it on your door. Make it a constant reminder that stress is not part of the celebration.

Meeting online or teleconferencing remains an option that should be considered or when precautions cannot be effectively implemented or adequately communicated.

SPJST Scholarship Applications Now Available Online Great news! The new online SPJST Scholarship application is now available. If you have a 2022 graduating high school senior in your lodge, please let him/her know they are eligible to apply for an SPJST scholarship. Also, full– time undergraduates who have not received an SPJST Scholarship may apply for the scholarship.

Whereas some lodges are experiencing a resurgence in member participation, others have been less fortunate. There are reasons for this: While it is certainly possible for a lodge to experience a level of success without a plan, those lodges whose members have invested the time and resources into a mission and goals can look forward to achieving success at a much quicker pace.

A great place to start is by conducting a simple — and fun — strategic planning session that helps to answer, “What is my lodge doing to make a positive difference for its members and for the community?” And with a little bit of advance notice, SPJST President/CEO Vanicek and I would love to lend a hand with the process. With just a little preparation, it is possible to conduct this three-step exercise in 60 to 90 minutes. In the end, the information that is collected can be useful in constructing a strategic plan for your lodge.

It makes for a fast-paced and enjoyable program. Topics that don’t typically come up in your regular lodge meetings will be — the positives as well as the negatives — then we talk about how to build on the positives and what we can do to eliminate the negatives. When we’re done, your lodge will be on its way to moving forward with a clearly

defined mission statement. If you’d like to have us come in and work with your lodge, please give Brian or me a call and we’ll set it up.

District News District Seven Family Fun Day November 14, 2021 • Lodge 107, Floresville 1156 FM 1303 • Floresville, Texas

SPJST Lodge 107, Floresville will host the District Seven Family Fun Day on Sunday November 14, 2021, at the lodge hall, 1156 FM 1303 in Floresville.

Registration for contests and door prizes is from 10 to 10:30 a.m. followed by a brief business meeting. Lodge 107 will provide complimentary brunch and drinks. Each lodge is asked to bring its lodge banner.

A barbecue chicken plate will be served for $10. To order plates, members are asked to notify their lodge secretary by November 8.

Lodges are asked to bring a gift ($20 value) for the prize drawing to benefit the district and a door prize ($10 value), or lodges may prefer to mail a $30 check to District Seven Treasurer Sandra Hoggard, 14 Dallari Court, San Antonio, Texas 78216. Deadline to send a check is November 8. Lodges will be recognized for their donations.

Members are encouraged to bring items for the silent auction.

The district is collecting old eyeglasses and cases and aluminum can tabs. These items may be brought to the district meeting.

Contests The following contests will be held for members and non members: • Bunco • Dominos (age 16 and over) • Cornhole (age 16 and over) • Adult Ornament Contest (age 16 and over) - no larger than 6 inches by 6 inches.

• Kolaches (age 16 and over) - Kolaches must consist of only one type of filling: cream cheese, fruit, or poppy seed; no purchased fillings. Recipe for dough and filling must be submitted. Place 13 kolaches on a disposable plate. Kolaches will be donated to the silent auction.

• Needlework (age 16 and over) - entry must be made entirely by hand and must be made by the person entering. Needlework includes embroidery, crochet, knitting, needlepoint, and cross-stitch, and must be made during the past year.

The youth club made fruit bags and are participating in Operation Christmas Child. A District One weekend at Camp Kubena will be Saturday and Sunday, November 13 and 14, and they are planning to make lap blankets for the nursing home. A Christmas program is planned for Sunday, December 12 with the meal starting at 4:30 p.m.

Motion was passed to display new member referral cards and brochures at the entrance of the hall. Motion was passed for all offices to remain the same.

November birthdays include Sheila Orsak on the 7th and Donnie Hejl on the 27th.

Lodge 35, Elk reports on October meeting On Wednesday, October 20, 2021, President Randy Pavelka called the SPJST Lodge 35, Elk and Elk Hall Incorporated meetings to order at 7 p.m.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all. A moment of silence was held in memory of Elizabeth Kubitza who would have been celebrating her birthday on that day. She had given many

years of service to the lodge.

Secretary Carla Price read her September meeting reports, and they were approved as read. Treasurer Cari Hammer presented her September meeting reports, and they were approved as well. Floor Chair Gene Pavelka gave his hall report, and we have been doing very well. Bar Chair Randy Pavelka shared his bar report, and he has been doing very well, too.

Under new business, there was discussion on raising the rental rates. A motion was made by Fred Kubitza to charge $800 for one day and $1,200 for two days with an extra refundable $100 deposit if the kitchen is left clean. This will start with new hall rentals. If you already have a booking, this doesn’t apply.

Walter Kubitza seconded the motion, and it passed.

Electric fund transfers will be used to purchase alcohol for the hall instead of checks.

With no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:40 p.m.

Next Meeting—November 10 The next meeting will be Wednesday, November 10 after hall cleanup at about 7 p.m.

Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and youth motto. Members also stood for a moment of silence on the death of Henry Mark Veselka. Six members and three guests - Hannah, Fiona, and Reid Galler - were present.

SPJST Foundation gives to Placedo VFD

District Six Director Annie Vahalik, center, and Lodge 97, Placedo President Gay Revel present a check to Placedo Volunteer Fire Department Fire Chief Calvin Davis from the SPJST Foundation. The check is from the residual funds from the Hurricane Harvey fund drive. Fire Chief Davis states, “These funds are a wonderful blessing since Covid has hurt fundraising, and the money will be very useful in keeping our fire department ready to respond when anyone needs our help. As a longtime resident of Placedo, I remember the Placedo SPJST Hall when it was part of the community.”

Lodge 79 Corpus Christi celebrates October Lodge 79, Corpus Christi celebrated Czech Heritage Month and Halloween on Sunday, October 17, 2021. A delicious meal of pork roast, chicken noodle soup, sauerkraut, other sides, and kolaches were enjoyed by all in attendance.

The meeting was called to order at 2:10 p.m. by President Mark Rebecek who led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

We had 16 members and guests in attendance, and all officers were present.

On the sick list was Leona Grant who had a stay in the hospital. Leona attended the meeting was doing better.

President Rebecek introduced Sales Agent Carlos Benavidez. Carlos gave a very informative talk.

Secretary Virginia Rebecek read the September 2021 minutes, and they were approved. Treasurer Larry Elzner presented the August and September financial report, and they were approved.

Under communications, Secretary Virginia Rebecek read a letter from District Seven Secretary Wendy Pruski about the District Seven meeting to be held at Lodge 107, Floresville on Sunday, November 14. Seven members

from Lodge 79 will attend.

The fraternal report was presented by Vice President/Fraternal Activities Coordinator Jerry Sijansky. He asked all members to turn in their fraternal acts for the year at the November meeting.

Under new business, our lodge has decided to give donations to 501(c)3 organizations every three months instead of monthly. It was approved.

Youth Leader Marcia Rew gave the youth report. She had four members and guests in attendance. The youth made Halloween masks and received goodie bags. The youth received $25 from Jane Brelsford who won it in a drawing at our September meeting. Thank you, Jane!

Birthdays for October were Luke Garcia on the 8th and Judy Majek on the 31st. “Happy Birthday” was sung to these members.

Door prizes of $25 were won by Annie Urbanovsky and Leona Grant.

Christina Rew made a motion to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Carlos Benavidez. The meeting adjourned at 2:55 p.m.

Lodge 141, Sealy plans Dec. 14 Christmas meeting The Lodge 141, Sealy meeting was held at the office of Integrity Insurance on Tuesday, October 12, 2021, at 4 p.m.

The meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance led by President Rick Martinez. Minutes were read by Secretary Bernice Stolarski and approved after a motion by Dora Martinez, seconded by Haley Martinez. The treasurer’s report was presented by Dora Martinez. It was approved after a motion by Bernice Stolarski, seconded by Bennie Stolarski.

District One Director Donnie Victorick sent an email that he had planned to attend our meeting, but since the time was changed to 4 p.m., he was unable to attend. He thanked us for our continuing work in SPJST. President Rick stated that he attended a district sales agents’ meeting hosted by Regional General Agent Jim Schroeder which was a four-hour course of continuing education.

Our lodge has two new members Daniel Richard Martinez and Lyndsey L. Martinez. Dora Martinez made the motion to accept the new members into our lodge, seconded by Bernice Stolarski. Motion passed.

The SPJST Float will be in the Austin County Fair Parade on Thursday, Oc-

tober 14. Riders will be Rick, Lyndsey, and Haley Martinez and Gloria and Raymond Calderon.

Under correspondence, a nice thank you note was received from Emil Kutra for his birthday money. He really appreciated it and for thinking of him.

Sick Committee reported Pat and Bob Schleider were out due to Covid, Mo and Holland Dunn, and Mary Wunderlich is doing better.

New members/insurance included six members for Kerry Herrington and one member for Connie Carter. Great job to our sales agents. Callye Schleider moved to accept our new members, seconded by Mike Schleider. Welcome to our lodge!

Plaid Friday was conceptualized in Oakland, Calif., several years ago in an effort to encourage holiday shoppers to slow down and shop locally at small businesses rather than partake in the frenzy of the traditional Black Friday rush at big box retailers. Similarly, Small Business Saturday® was founded by American Express in 2010 as a community-centric day to support local businesses. Follow these Thanksgiving travel safety tips The week of Thanksgiving is a busy time of the year to travel that’s marked by a large number of people traveling to see loved ones. While many people look forward to seeing their loved ones, the sheer volume of cars on the road during Thanksgiving week makes it a dangerous time to travel.

This Thanksgiving, drivers should make it a point to follow these tips to ensure they get to their destinations safely and soundly.

• Check the forecast before you go.

Weather can be unpredictable around Thanksgiving. Conditions may be sunny one day and then cold and icy the next.

While many people now view Memorial Day weekend as the unofficial start of summer, the weekend should not be celebrated without also pausing to reflect on and recognize military personnel who lost their lives in defense of our freedom and American way of life.

Thanksgiving quiche puts sweet potatoes front and center Sweet potatoes are a favorite side dish at Thanksgiving dinner tables.

Packed with vitamins, nutrients, fiber, and delectable flavor, sweet potatoes have earned their place on holiday dinner tables. While many holiday hosts bake, fry, or mash their sweet potatoes, these beloved tubers can be prepared in other ways as well.

If you want to put a new twist on this Thanksgiving staple, whip up this recipe for “Sweet Potato Quiche,” courtesy of the North Carolina Sweet Potato Commission. Submitted to the NC State Fair Tailgate Recipe Contest, this recipe marries sweet tubers with decadent cheese, rich cream and savory spices.

Sweet Potato Quiche 2 cups sweet potatoes, peeled, and diced into small cubes 3⁄4 cup yellow onion, diced 2 1/2 Tablespoons olive oil 1/2 teaspoon salt Black pepper to taste Egg mixture: 4 eggs 1 cup heavy cream 1/2 teaspoon fresh rosemary, minced 1/2 Tablespoon fresh parsley, minced 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 3 ounces Gruyere cheese, shredded Pre-baked deep dish pie crust Preheat oven to 400 F. Mix together the first five ingredients and place on baking sheet. Roast in oven 15 to 20 minutes.

While sweet potatoes and onions are roasting, shred cheese; set aside.

Whisk egg mixture and set aside.

Once potatoes and onions finish roasting, spoon them into pre-baked pie shell. Next, layer shredded cheese on top of sweet potatoes.

Reduce oven to 375 F. Pour egg mixture over cheese and potatoes. Place quiche in oven on center rack. Bake 20 to 25 minutes, or until eggs are set.

In Memoriam In Memory of Freida Popelka Freida Popelka, age 92, of Temple, Texas, passed away on Friday, October 15, 2021, at a local hospital.

She was born on July 27, 1929 in McGregor, Texas the daughter of Fred and Bertha (Lippe) Lange.

Visitation was Freida Popelka on Wednesday, October 20 from 10 to 11 a.m. at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home in Temple.

Graveside service was on Wednesday, October 20 at 12 noon at Seaton Cemetery in Seaton.

Frieda retired after many years with ER Carpenter in Temple. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton and of Temple Brethren Church where she also served with the Christian Sisters and Helping Hands. Most of all,

she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by daughter-in-law Kay Popelka of Temple; grandchildren Hilarie Schuetze of Temple, Jason Schuetze and wife April of Lott, Karly Tindell and husband Cody of LittleRiver-Academy, Kayla Roberts and husband Greg of Little-River Academy, and Bolton Popelka of Temple; greatgrandchildren Ashley, Austin, Jason, Julia, Jackson, Alexa, Lyla, Leighton, Kinzley, and Kaylen; eight great-greatgrandchildren; brother Jerry Lange and wife Bonnie of Highlands; sister Irene Watson and husband John of Sellersburg, Indiana; and sister-in-law Evelyn Popelka of Temple.

Frieda was preceded in death by husband Frank Popelka; son Frank Popelka; sister Laverne Dockey; and brothers Floyd Lange, Frederick Lange, Roy Lee Lange; and Lonnie Lange.

District Two youth enjoy day at Fiesta Texas Dear Vestnik Readers, How excited I am to write to the Vestnik about our fantastic District Two youth members and share the great and fun experience we had on Saturday, October 2, 2021. What a year - which we all feel has been forever - with illnesses, masks, distancing, and of course, the word we all want to get out of our vocabulary - “Covid.” I hope you and your families have been well.

Of course, as most of you know, Districts One, Two, and Six were unable to have our Camp Kubena camping session due to health guidelines. I know how disappointing it was for so many who had planned to be able to see and enjoy their SPJST friends.

Assistant District Two Youth Counselor Amber Bartek and I talked about District Two youth needing a fun trip. It had been quite sometime since we had visited Six Flags, which was a District Two tradition. On Saturday, October 2, youth, a few friends, and parents who could attend, hit the road in vehicles and traveled south down I-35 to Fiesta Texas in San Antonio. It was an awesome trip!

There is nothing like going to an adventure park and parking on the second row, right at the entrance (and we weren’t even two hours early). The weather was perfect, and the park was not very crowded until early evening when a few Halloween festivities began. Everyone had a great and safe time. We are look-

ing forward to a 2022 adventure trip!

Suggestions are welcome.

The fall DYC meeting was held at Camp Kubena in October. I did send a letter to the youth leaders to share with parents the dates of our 2022 activities.

I will post those in the Vestnik soon.

I would like to say a big thank you to Amber Bartek for all she has done - not only for her youth club - but also for the district youth clubs. I felt I needed a break (retirement)! Haha! Was I ever wrong! I missed it way too much! I love you kids, parents, leaders, DYCs, all the fun, and especially, your friendship.

Thank you, Amber for now being my “right and left” hand. We are a great team and blessed to have SPJST in our lives !

Lodge 47, Seaton youth welcomes new puppy

Lodge 185 New Braunfels youth: Halloween fun

My teacher went to my soccer game last week. I played against somebody in my class. We had to tie.

We got a new puppy. I named the puppy ‘Lily.’

Hi, Readers!

We had a blast this Halloween! We went to a few parties and had trick-ortreating in our neighborhood.

I went to the ornament contest last week. It was really good. I played with my friends. I got to trunk-or-treat there.

I was a zombie skeleton. I got a bunch of candy. I went on the train ride one time. I mostly did the duck pond though because it was free.

I am now done talking. Goodbye!

Lodge 185 New Braunfels youth: fourth grade fun I am having fun in fourth grade! I am playing volleyball with NYSO (Navarro Youth Sports Organization) and love to watch my sister play.

I went to the Guadalupe County Fair and had so much fun watching the rodeo and riding rides.

Lodge 185 New Braunfels youth and mom attend Halloween dance

I am having fun in fourth grade. I like to watch my sister cheer at the football games, and I am playing volleyball with NYSO (Navarro Youth Sports Organization).

I just got my braces this past week also.

Lodge 48, Beyersville youth inducted into NHS Congratulations to Brooke Newsom of Lodge 48, Beyersville Youth Club! She was inducted into the National Honor Society at Legacy Early College High School on October 25, 2021.

Brooke is a senior and the daughter of Shannon and Michelle Newsom.

Lodge 48, Beyersville youth members visited the local pumpkin patch to pick pumpkins for Halloween.

2021 Youth Club Member Update - Merit Points and Meeting Attendance Third Quarter Merit Points and Meeting Attendance The totals below in the column labeled “Pts” are merit points earned in the January to December 2021 youth year. This is total merit points for the 2021 youth year. Please see “What is the Merit Point System?” for complete information about the contest.

The number in the column labeled “Mtgs” is the number of meetings each youth club member has attended from January to December 2021. Please see “What is an Active Youth Member?” below to determine number of meetings needed to participate in youth activities.

What is the Merit Point System?

Youth club members earn merit points for participating in SPJST lodge, district, and state activities. At the end of the youth year, points are totaled and the youth with the highest points in the youth club receive cash awards.

Contest Dates January 1 to December 31, 2021 Merit Point Contest Age Divisions Junior—Entering Kindergarten or Age 5 to Age 12 Teen—Age 13 Years to High School Senior Rules The youth leader or assistant youth leader is responsible for keeping track of the merit points for each active member of the youth club. The points are to be sent to the State Fraternal Director on the Quarterly and Merit Point Reports each quarter. Youth club members are also encouraged to keep up with their points and turn them in to the youth leader on a quarterly basis. This system helps both the youth leader and the youth member keep better records of youth participation.

Current, official Quarterly and Merit Point Reports, available from the State Fraternal Director, may only be used in the Merit Point Contest.

The Quarterly and Merit Point Reports sent to the State Fraternal Director by the youth leader will be kept on file for at least six months following the conclusion of the contest.

Merit points are earned for only those activities listed under Youth Point Values.

An activity can only earn points in one category on the point sheet.

When in doubt about any activity earning points, contact the State Fraternal Director prior to the contest conclusion.

Everyone will be subject to the same rules in every contest. Failure to comply with any rule shall mean immediate withdrawal.

Merit Point Awards Awards are presented on the district and state levels in the junior and teen merit point contests. At each District YAD, the Home Office presents first through third place awards to top qualifying junior and teen youth club members. The top three junior and teen youth club members with the most points in each district will receive awards. In the event of a tie, all who tied for first through third places will receive the award.

A youth may only receive the state award once in the age division. State Teen and State Junior awards are presented at State YAD. District Junior and Teen Point Awards First Place - $30 Second Place - $25 Third Place - $20 What is an Active Youth Member?

A youngster with a current SPJST insurance certificate may enter the youth program the youth year that he/she will be entering kindergarten.

To be considered active, youth club member must attend a majority (seven) of the monthly meetings during the year. The youth must attend the majority of these meetings at his/her home youth club. In those instances where a lodge does not have a youth club, the youngster may attend adult lodge meetings or the meetings of another youth club. The youngster will be eligible for camp and Youth Achievement Day (YAD) after the completion of his/her kindergarten year. Active youth members must be single and not be pregnant or a parent.

The age of the youth on June 1 of the

current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.).

The 2021 youth year began January 1 and ends December 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school.

Patsy was born in Temple, Texas, on May 4, 1953, to her parents Alfred and Martha Klusacek. Her older siblings were Alfred Jr. and Shirley, who were five years older than her. Patsy’s brother and sister would always say she was everyone’s fav o r i t e because she was the baby. Patsy was blessed by being born on her daddy’s birthday. Everyone who knew him — heard his story about their birthdays being on the same day. Patsy’s father’s favorite saying, “It’s one present that I got and could not exchange or get my money back.” Patsy loved her daddy!

Patsy’s grandfather, the late Frank Spanhel, was the president of Lodge, 47 Seaton.

David was SPJST State Duke and Melanie was the District Two Queen for two years.

Patsy and Albert were expecting their first child in Dec e m b e r 1977. In that same year, Patsy’s teenage cousin tragically lost his life while playing football. This tragedy brought Patsy’s parents, her aunt and uncle, and the parents of Melanie Zavodny to become very close friends. Patsy remembers the cutest and sweetest little girl she fell in love with. Patsy was asked what she would name her and Albert’s first child if it was a girl. With the joy Melanie Zav o d n y brought to all the families during that time, Patsy knew their first child would be named Melanie. Patsy always wondered if Melanie Zavodny found someone named David to love and marry, just so Patsy would have kids with the same names. Patsy has had many SPJST members ask if David Nauert belongs to her.

Roles of the Branches of the U.S. Military How to help Veterans in need Millions of men and women serve in the military and make the sacrifices that such service requires. Risking their lives to serve their countries, veterans sometimes endure mental and physical trauma, returning home to face uphill battles as they deal with their injuries.

Many veterans in need are not just in need of medical attention. Learning that their efforts and sacrifices are recognized and appreciated by the ordinary citizens they protect can make a world of difference to veterans as they recover from their injuries. Men, women and children who want to help veterans in need can do so in various ways.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs notes that each year more than 75,000 volunteers spend more than 11 million hours in service to America’s veterans. Visiting veterans at the hospital to hear their stories can lift their spirits and aid in their recoveries. In addition, veterans’ hospitals may have volunteer opportunities that make it easier for hospitals to operate at optimal capacity.

★ Employ social media to help local veterans. Many people who want to help local veterans might not be able to do so more than one day per week. But some veterans may require daily assistance.

Men and women can start a locallybased Facebook group for fellow members of their community who want to pitch in to help local veterans. Such a group can make it easier to share information and arrange help for veterans in need.

★ Help a neighbor. Unfortunately, many veterans return home with injuries that affect their ability to make it through a typical day without assistance. Disabled veterans may be unable to do their own grocery shopping or maintain their homes. If a neighbor or nearby veteran

Each branch of the U.S. military has a unique mission: United States Army The Army is one of the three military departments that reports directly to the Department of Defense. The Army conducts operational and institutional missions around the world, typically handling land-based missions. The Army also guards U.S. installations and properties throughout the world.

United States Navy Serving to protect the freedom of the seas, the Navy is another branch of the military that reports directly to the Department of Defense. Among its many missions, the U.S. Navy serves to make the seas safe for travel and trade.

United States Air Force The Air Force also reports directly to the Department of Defense and trains for and maintains global superiority in air, space and cyberspace. Air Force personnel fly planes, helicopters and even satellites.

United States Marine Corps The Marine Corps is a component of the Department of the Navy. It carries out global missions on both sea and shore and serves as an ex-

peditionary force. Marines are a rapid-reaction team and are usually the first boots on the ground in a conflict.

United States Coast Guard The Coast Guard safeguards maritime interests through both civil and military missions. The Coast Guard operates around the world and in domestic waterways and ports.

United States Army National Guard The oldest branch of the U.S. military, the National Guard serves as a complementary force to active duty. Those in the National Guard are trained to be versatile, providing for humanitarian aid, domestic emergencies, combat missions, and homeland security operations.

The Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard, Army Reserve, Coast Guard Reserve, and Navy Reserve are the other branches made up of servicemen and servicewomen who primarily work civilian jobs but may be called to full-time military duty if necessary.

The U.S. Armed Forces are headed by the President of the United States. The Secretary of the Department of Defense reports directly to the Commander-in-Chief.

The DOD controls each military branch, except for the Coast Guard, which is overseen by the Department of Homeland Security.

In Czech, the nouns are declined according to their grammatical functions in the sentence.

The nouns that have been listed in the vocabulary have been in the nominative case. The nominative is the case of the subject of the sentence or of the predicate nominative (after the verb “to be”). The nominative is also the case of a noun standing alone (unless in direct address, or understood as a part of an incomplete sentence).

The accusative case is the case of the direct object of transitive verbs. It tells what person or object is directly affected by the action of the verb and answers the questions: Whom? What?

The Legend of the Candles and the Symbol of Holly No. OR-20 - $22 On CHRISTmas Eve, many years ago, a lonely dressmaker was sewing in her home, working by the light of a small candle. Suddenly there was a knock on the door. She opened the door to find a small boy, shivering in the cold night. He told the dressmaker that he was hungry, lost, and cold. He saw the candlelight in her window, prompting him to seek a place to rest.

The dressmaker was concerned about allowing the boy to come into her home. He was truly in need of rest, warmth, and nourishment; however, if she took the time to take care of his needs, she feared that she might not have time to finish her work.

Nevertheless, because of her kind heart, the dressmaker took the boy in.

As he rested, she prepared broth for him to eat. After he had eaten and rested, he thanked the woman and told her he must be on his way.

Monday, November 8, 2021 The dressmaker accompanied the boy to the door, and after he had departed, she turned around to finish her work.

Then she saw the miracle: All the dresses that she was working on were beautifully finished! The dressmaker ran outside to find the little boy, but he had vanished and she could find no footprints in the snow. She realized her visitor had been the Christ Child. Through the centuries, the custom of burning candles on CHRISTmas Eve is meant to be a welcome sign for all strangers and family members who have been away from home as they return.

Holly is a symbol of life in the bleak and cold months of winter. When the deep red berries appeared on the holly plant, the season of feasting and merriment began. In early years, Father CHRISTmas decorated his hood with holly, which represented the crown of thorns that Jesus wore when He was crucified, and the red berries represented the blood He shed for our sins.

The Symbol of Baby Jesus in the Manger No. CW-721 - $14 Jesus’ birth transformed the world in a way that brought new hope for people everywhere.

About 700 years before CHRIST, a prophecy concerning Jesus’ birth was recorded in the Old Testament.

Isaiah 7:14 says: “The Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin will conceive and will bear a son, and she will call his name Immanuel.” The New Testament opens with the account of Jesus’ birth. Though Jesus was born as a child with flesh and blood, His source was the Holy Spirit. Being born to the Virgin Mary allowed Him to walk among people, perform miracles, teach and finally die for our sins. This radiant ornament depicting Jesus in the manger is a reminder of how CHRISTmas began, and its significance for our lives.

The following ornaments were all made in the Czech Republic. They were mouth blown, individually hand decorated and painted, and painstakingly embellished for your enjoyment.

The Tradition of Santa Claus No. OC-214 - $10 The tradition of Santa Claus goes back to the 3rd Century, when Saint Nicholas walked the earth and became the patron saint of children. In the early days of the United States, his name was “Kris Kringle.” Later, Dutch settlers in the USA brought the old stories of St. Nicholas with them resulting in Kris Kringle and St. Nicholas becoming “Sinterklaas,” or as we now say, “Santa Claus.” Santa Claus is a jolly man in red, with a white beard, flying around the world on CHRISTmas Eve in a huge sleigh laden with toys for good girls and boys. Traditionally, Santa enters every home through the chimney which is the reason for hanging stockings or socks by the chimney. The hope of every child is that Santa would fill the stockings with toys, candy canes, and other treats for discovery on CHRISTmas morning. Our Santa Claus ornament, handcrafted in the Czech Republic, is surrounded by CHRISTmas gifts for everyone. He is seen reading his “naughty or nice” list as he prepares to fill stockings with gifts.

Czech Songs in Texas The music, words, and part of the essay for the song below are from the new book Czech Songs in Texas by Czech Texans Frances Barton and John K. Novak. Permission to use this excerpt is from the book’s publisher, University of Oklahoma Press.

The words of the chorus to “Červená a bílá” are derived from a folk text collected in southern Bohemia and published in Karel Jaromír Erben’s 1864 folk song collection. The song has long

VĚSTNÍK been associated with what is now SK Slavia Praha, one of the major fotbal (soccer) teams in the Czech Republic.

Slavia, known as the Červenobílí (Reds and Whites), was founded in 1893 during a period of heightened nationalism.

The song, with chorus and only one verse, is an old unofficial anthem of the team.

From Erben’s earliest version, the song has featured two colors, red and white. These are the colors of the Bohemian coat of arms from the twelfth century, a two-tailed white lion against a red background. The lion symbol is still used today, both officially and as a stand-in for Czechness, and the red and white colors are featured on the current national flag. After World War I, the first flag adopted by the new nation of Czechoslovakia was a white stripe over one of red. The current flag, a triangle of blue that intersects the white and red

stripes, was settled on in 1920. The song, because of these colors, can carry additional connotations of identity.

In America, the Joseph Jiran music publishing company of Chicago copyrighted an orchestral arrangement of the song by Anton Grill in December 1921.

A few months later, it was recorded by Victor Orchestra and released as a 78 rpm record. In 1922, Louis Vitak of Chicago brought out the version with the three verses widely known in Texas. In the Vitak verses, a young couple reviews the changes brought about by their first year of marriage, especially their new role as parents of a baby. In the last line, the boy has wrapped their baby in a swaddling blanket.

Czech Songs in Texas contains 61 popular songs with music notation, Czech lyrics, English translations, and essays on the history of each song. The book includes substantial chapters on the history of the Texas Czech ethnic community and a survey of Czech folk and popular music in its European home.
