SPJST Mourns Loss of Honorary Vice President Gene McBride SPJST Honorary Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride passed away at his home in Temple, Texas, on Tuesday, September 7, 2021. He was 83.

Brother McBride began his career at the SPJST Home Office in 1979 as State Field Manager. He was elected to the position of SPJST Supreme Lodge Vice President at the 2000 Convention.

He served until his retirement in 2014 after 35 years of employment with SPJST. He was a charter member of Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy.

Brother McBride was born on January 6, 1938, to Ollie and Mittie (Patterson) McBride in Navarro County, Texas.

He is survived by wife Frances McBride of Temple; children Darrell McBride and wife Darlene of Italy, Rusty Pecot of Belton, Darla Morgan and husband Brian of Italy, and

Amy Whitaker of Bruceville; grandchildren Derek, Levi, Melisa, Jason, Robert, Blake, Hunter, Chasidee, R.J., and Logan; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents Ollie and Mittie McBride; and brothers Cecil and Edwin McBride.

Visitation was Friday, September 10 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Scanio Harper Fu-

neral Home in Temple. Funeral service was Saturday, September 11 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home followed by burial at Eddy Cemetery in Eddy.

Memorials in Brother McBride’s honor may be made to the SPJST Scholarship Fund; Camp Kubena, in care of the SPJST Foundation; or to Lewy Body Dementia Association (www.lbda.org).

A special tribute honoring Brother McBride will appear in the September 26 Vestnik.

It’s Your Life

Cheaper by the Dozen Here are 12 questions that are good to ask yourself every year for every policy you own - whether it’s SPJST or any other company - that you have insurance with. This could prevent you from being underinsured, costing you more in premiums later, or just reacting before you lose the policy. No matter who you have insurance with, ask these questions every year. If you are not sure of the answers, we will be glad to review all your policies - with us or anyone else to make sure you are good to go.

1. Are the names, addresses, dates, etc. correct on all my policies? If there is wrong information, you may have trouble with changes or adjustments to the policy.

2. Do I know how much cash value I have on my permanent policies (Whole Life and Universal Life)? Especially Universal Life policies. You should be asking an agent or the home office to review it with you every year when you get your statement. It can prevent disaster later.

3. Are my beneficiaries up to date? If you pass away and you have old beneficiaries, it could delay getting this money to whomever should have it.

4. Why did I buy my policy in the first place? If life changes happen, you may find yourself with the wrong amount or wrong people benefiting.

5. Do I still have enough insurance?

(You may have gotten married, had a child, bought a house, got divorced, changed jobs, etc.)

6. Is my premium payment schedule still okay for me? You may find it easier if

you paid quarterly, or change to monthly from quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. We may be able to accommodate your new financial situation.

7. If I was rated because of my medical condition or smoking, has that changed?

If you no longer have the condition that prompted the extra premium or you quit smoking for more than two years, we may be able to change the premium. (No guarantee, but most companies could sure look at your new situation). We will for sure.

8. Are the riders I bought with my policy still needed? You may have bought an accidental death rider but bought more insurance and no longer need that rider.

That can save you some money.

9. Am I the owner of the certificate? If you don’t own the certificate and want changes done, you may not be able to do them.

10. Should I convert some or all my term insurance to whole life? You can do it up to age 65. If you are not fully financially secured before the term is over, you may not be able to get anymore. Sometimes it’s best to convert a small amount to make sure you have something when the term is over.

11. Do I have a proper estate plan in place? If you have extra money sitting in low interest accounts, you may want to get a fixed annuity instead. This will protect that money from estate taxes and probate. It will allow your beneficiary to have money while the estate is being sorted out.

12. Do I have outstanding loans against this policy? If it is not paid back, it could have a drastic effect on the policy in later years, including killing itself off.

In the end, it’s about making sure you have the right coverage for the right situation. You can have 100 cans of green beans, but it will not help if you’re making refried beans. All the insurance in the world is no good if it’s not the right stuff.

You may have several policies, with several companies, but if it’s not right for your situation, it could be costly, and you may end up with nothing. All our RGAs

will be glad to review all your insurance.

If they can’t do it, I’ll be glad to do it.

Lodge 25, Ennis discusses fundraiser Lodge 25, Ennis met on Thursday, August 12, 2021, beginning with a meal consisting of fried chicken, corn salad, and the trimmings. The meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance led by Margaret Krajca. A moment of silence was held for deceased member Kenneth Vavra.

All officer reports were presented and approved as read. We discussed the current fundraiser - 30 Guns In 30 Days.

Renovation of the floor will be complete

before the anniversary party on November 13. Another agenda item was the roof damage that needs to be addressed and repaired, but it was decided to wait till next year to make final decisions on it.

New member introduced was Michael Van Fowler, III, grandson of Pat (and the late Van) Fowler.

Meeting adjourned, and I look forward to seeing you at the next meeting on September 9.

Lodge 29, Taylor readies for 20th annual barbecue cook-off Lodge 29, Taylor will host its 20th Annual Barbecue Cook-Off on Friday, September 24 and Saturday, September 25, 2021, at Taylor SPJST Hall, located at 5025 FM 619 in Taylor.

Friday Night Dance Sterling Country will play for a free dance on Friday, September 24 from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. Old-fashioned hamburgers will also be available beginning at 6 p.m.

Cook-Off Entries and Awards The entry fee for barbecue cookers is $100 (chicken, pork ribs, and brisket).

Other entry fees are $10 for jackpot pinto beans, $10 for jackpot cook’s choice, and $10 for jackpot pork butt.

We are looking forward to awarding $4,000 in prize money at this year’s cookoff. Cash and trophies will be pre-

sented to first through 10th places in all meat categories (chicken, pork ribs, and brisket). Cash and unique trophies will be awarded for first, second, and third place master cook and best rig. Jackpot pinto beans, cook’s choice, and pork butt are 80 percent payback; cash prizes will be awarded for first through fifth places, and trophies will be awarded for first through 10th places.

Lodge 35, Elk appreciates hall signs On Wednesday, August 11, 2021, President Randy Pavelka called the Lodge 35, Elk meeting to order at 7:18 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by officers, members, and guest.

Present were 10 members and one guest.

Carla Price read the July meeting report. With no corrections, it was approved as read. Due to our treasurer’s absence, Tammy Pavelka gave the reports. There was a correction made; the reports were then approved.

Everyone surely does like the new hall signs. We have gotten compliments and passersby now know what is here and has been here for so many years.

Thanks again!

Floor Chair Gene Pavelka was not present so there was no report from him.

Happy anniversary to Johnnie and Carla Price, and happy birthday to Barbara Pavelka.

Lodge 79 Corpus Christi celebrates belated Fourth of July Lodge 79, Corpus Christi celebrated a belated Fourth of July on Sunday, July 18, 2021, with hot dogs and sides. The meeting was called to order at 2:15 p.m.

by President Mark Rebecek who led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. All officers were present except for Treasurer Larry Elzner and Assistant Youth Leader Christina Rew. We had 16 members in attendance. On the sick list were Larry Elzner who is recovering from surgery.

Secretary Virginia Rebecek read the June minutes, and they were approved.

Secretary Virginia Rebecek also gave the financial report in the absence of Treasurer Larry Elzner, and it was approved.

FAC report was given by Vice President/FAC Jerry Sijansky. He asked all to read the Vestnik for upcoming events.

Also the Supreme Lodge is taking up donations for Moravia in the Czech Republic which received damage from a tornado.

Under new business Vice President/FAC Jerry Sijansky made a motion that our monthly donation go to the Czech Moravian Benevolence Fund, seconded by Lila Mae Hajek. Motion was approved. Secretary Virginia Rebecek has received donations as of July 18 from Mary Jo Rebecek, Stephen and

President Rebecek stated the August 15 lodge meeting has been changed to August 22 due to several members who will be attending the convention in Killeen.

Under unfinished business, Secretary Virginia Rebecek handed out forms to the delegates.

Youth Leader Marcia Rew gave the youth report. They had four members in attendance. The youth made wind chimes and suncatchers. They also talked about camp.

Birthday for July was Virginia Rebecek on the 21st. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Virginia.

Twenty-five dollar prizes were won

by Virginia Rebecek and Becky Urbanovsky.

Our next meeting will be August 22 with President Rebecek preparing beef and chicken fajitas. Members are asked to bring a side dish.

Lodge 79 Corpus Christi members participate in SPJST Convention Lodge 79, Corpus Christi held its monthly meeting on Sunday, August 22, 2021. Under new business, President Rebecek read a letter about renewing our general liability insurance policy for Lodge 79 meetings. The renewal was approved. President Rebecek also stated the District Seven meeting in Jourdanton was nice. Everyone enjoyed themselves. Our lodge had a good turnout.

President Rebecek gave a report on the convention which was a success. Attending as delegates were Mark and Virginia Rebecek and Michael Urbanovsky.

Lodge 25, Ennis and Sales Agent Margaret Krajca are proud to announce new member Michael Van Fowler III! Michael was born on January 26, 2021, the son of Michael and Kimberly Fowler of Tyler, Texas.

Michael is a fifth generation SPJST Lodge 25 member! His greatgreat parents Anton and Barbara Trojacek were active members in the early days of the lodge. Anton served as president of the lodge in 1922. Michael’s great-grandparents George and Mildred Trojacek were also very involved with SPJST. Mildred served as youth leader in the 1950s. Michael’s grandpa Van served as president and grandma Pat (Trojacek) Fowler is the lodge’s current recording secretary, serving in that role for many years.

Helping the Joe Joe Bear Foundation SPJST agents, members and Vice President of Sales and Marketing Delisle Doherty braved the hot temperatures on the golf course to help raise money for the Joe Joe Bear Foundation. Joe Joe Bear gives teddy bears and support to families of children with life threatening illnesses in Texas and around the country. The organization has handed out almost 40,000 bears, and the tournament helped raise enough to purchase more than 4,000 bears. Lodge 84, Dallas hosts spaghetti luncheon Dear Readers, Lodge 84, Dallas held its spaghetti luncheon on Sunday, August 22, 2021, at Sokol Hall in Dallas. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the turnout was a bit smaller than expected but still a good time was had by all those who attended.

Vice President Vicki Sims welcomed everyone in attendance and brought the monthly meeting to order at 12:22 p.m.

After some brief announcements, a motion was made to table the minutes and remainder of the meeting until September. Motion carried, and everyone settled down for an afternoon of spaghetti dining and bingo playing.

I do want to make note that a moment of silence was held for our departed member Brother Jack Wolfe and for the mother of Brother Ron Coker. May your loved one’s rest in peace.

Lodge 88, Houston welcomes all to Czech Fest, Sat. Oct. 9 Fall is festival time, and SPJST Lodge 88, Houston invites all to Czech Fest on Saturday, October 9, 2021, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the hall, 1435 Beall Street at West 15th, Houston (the Heights).

Beer Garden opens at 2 p.m. Musical entertainment features Texavia and the Lodge 88 Czech Orchestra. Czech Folk Dancers will also perform. Fair games and fun for the kids start at 4 p.m. Traditional Czech food will be available.

There will be a cornhole tournament, kolache eating contest, and kolache baking contest.

Lodge 92, Fort Worth to host Czech Heritage Day on Sept. 18 “I had the honor of presenting a check to Rockport Volunteer Fire Department from the SPJST Foundation. This check is from the residual funds from the Hurricane Harvey fund drive. I met with Gillian Cox, a captain in the Rockport VFD. She was very appreciative of the check, letting me know that the department is completely funded by donations and volunteers. She then gave me a tour of the their beautiful facility that was repaired after Hurricane Harvey.”

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Pat Schleider reminded everyone the 2021 SPJST Convention will be held on August 13 to 15. It was discussed since Dennis Hermis had to withdraw as a delegate, our first alternate delegate Debra Ngo would be taking his place.

Keith Kieschnick made a motion to excuse Dennis and Elizabeth Hermis from our August meeting due to illness.

Barbara Linney-Gonzalez seconded the motion, and all approved.

Sick Committee reported Elizabeth and Dennis Hermis ill, and Mary Wunderlich is at home and doing better.

Birthday celebrants for August were Janice Combrelle on the 4th, Amanda Muzny on the 12th, Kenneth Malota on the 15th, and Autumn Ngo on the 9th.

We discussed lodge signage and trees that need to be trimmed back to clear the building from possible damage to the roof.

We all got to see our young adult Alexandria Johnson’s invitation to her graduation along with her picture in cap and gown with a letter inquiring about a lodge scholarship. We are all so very proud of her and all her accomplishments thus far so, of course, we all voted yes!

We talked about upcoming events and even the rodeo in Taylor that is coming up.

It was discussed that the August meeting is at the same time as the SPJST Convention so it was voted to cancel the lodge meeting in respect.

We enjoyed a great potluck and fun time playing bingo.

The next gathering will be on Sunday, September 12, and we will be playing some bingo! So please bring a one dollar item to add to the prizes. Yes, of course, we will be doing our famous potluck!

Country Memories that Never Die

By Justin Everett Lodge 24, Cyclone Green grasslands, fresh hay bales, bright corn patches, tall trees, and beautiful cottages. These are the images that go through my mind every time I head out on Highway 53 to go to my grandparents house in Yarrellton (10 miles past Zabcikville). When my sister (Jennifer) and I were little, we would stay the night out there almost every weekend. At first, I didn’t care for it since I was used to living in the city, but after a few visits, the countryside became contagious. My sister and I would have my mother drive us to Star Hall Lodge 47, Seaton so my grandparents could meet us halfway and not have to use so much gasoline (which is funny because back in the early 2000s, gasoline was only $1.46). My sister and I loaded in their Buick Park Avenue and begin our journey to the country. We really enjoyed seeing the cows, or “moo moos” as we called them. I always joked that God must have had fun making cows since there were so many different colored ones. I liked the black and white spotted cows because it reminded me of Oreo cookies and for a while, I actually thought Oreo cookies came from black and white cows ha ha!

When we got to the house, we unpacked and grandad took us for a ride on the four wheeler through their land.

Grandad immediately had an activity and didn’t make us sit around and wait, and I loved that. Sometimes he’d even let little me take the wheel, and I felt like I was on top of the world. Next, my sis and I took a ride in the John Deere while grandad moved the hay bales closer for the cows to eat. Grandad then let me behind the wheel of the tractor and the steering wheel felt like the size of Texas in the palm of my hand. We then headed back to the house, and I decided to jump into the pool of mechanics since the countryside was rubbing off on me. I chained the Red Flyer wagon to the back

of my tricycle and pulled my sister in the wagon. She felt like she was in heaven on earth. I even made train sounds as I drove.

After that, it was time for supper.

Grandma made her famous fried squash and pickles from her garden - fried chicken patties and corn-on-the-cob from grandad’s field. The juice from the fried chicken and squash rolled down our chins as the corn kernels popped in between our teeth. The taste of fresh farm was filled in those cobs.

After dinner, we helped Granny clean the dishes then grandad and I jammed with our accordions as Jennifer and Granny read story books and listened to us playing. When that was done, I played my Gameboy (an electronic game) for a little while then watched some TV in the living room with Jennifer as Granny tended to her garden before the sun went down.

Grandad did not have a gig this weekend so we were able to hang at the house. Jenny and I were watching our favorite show, “Arthur.” Right in the middle of the episode, Grandad walked in the living room with a VHS tape in his hand, and I knew it wasn’t “Arthur Season One” ha ha. Grandad looked at the TV and said, “Let’s watch this tape.

It’s got some good stuff on it.” In our minds, Jenny and I were bummed. We were really enjoying this episode of “Arthur,” and we had never seen it before. However, we knew it was not our house and we had to respect the rules.

(If we didn’t, there was a switch waiting for us.)

The tape consisted of various brass bands from up north, and sis and I were not impressed. However, when I saw Grandad tapping his foot, eating his can of peanuts, and drinking his beer, I let him have his moment and forced myself to enjoy it, too.

Meanwhile, Grandmother was in the kitchen making her homemade rice crispy treats. These were originality at their finest. Imagine a less sugary rice crispy with more wheat and milk flavor.

These were nice and sticky from the amount of marshmallow puff she used.

She always called them marshmallow stickies, not rice crispies. Oh wow, I just

now got that ha ha.

When 10 o’clock rolled around, it was time for bed. Still being small children, our grandparents wanted us safe to where they could keep an eye on us.

Jennifer slept in the guest bedroom with Granny. And I slept in the master bedroom with Grandfather. This way, in case something happened to one of us, they’d be right there two inches away to help. As I closed my eyes and tried to sleep, Grandad had his reading lamp glowing like a lighthouse beacon. He was reading the newspaper. I asked him if he could turn the light off as it was hard for me to sleep. He just kept saying, “In a minute.” That minute turned into 45, and finally he turned it out. Granny also neglected to tell me Grandad snored so a full night’s sleep was out of the question. However, now I look back on it as a fond memory.

The next morning was Saturday, we would leave on Sunday. For breakfast, Granny made her famous pancakes burnt edges and soft batter in the middle.

Thankfully, after breakfast, the grandparents let Jennifer and I watch TV. We got to see the “Arthur” episode we missed, and I played some Gameboy.

Finally at 11 a.m., Granny and Grandad drove us to a restaurant in Cameron called Johnnie’s for lunch. My eyes looked like they had luggage under them since I didn’t get much sleep from the light and snore in the darkness. But nothing a bottle of Dr. Pepper couldn’t fix!

Jenny and I ordered kids’ meal chicken nuggets; Granny and Grandad had chicken fried steak. Grandad’s highlight of the meal was cornbread and syrup. If you ever want to bribe my grandad or get him in a good mood, make him some homemade cornbread and syrup, and you’re gold.

When we finished lunch, the grandparents took us to a nearby park to play.

Jenny and I got on the swings and pretended they were spaceships, airplanes and even speedboats. Imagination comes in very handy at a park. We then went back to the house and helped Granny deshell some pecans. It wasn’t

the most exciting, but I sang while we did it.

Then we went fishing on the creek on their land, and I caught a bass! I couldn’t believe it! After that I dropped the pole, and said I’m going out on a high note and left. Then instead of the tractor or four wheeler, Grandad took us all for a ride in his green Model A with a goose sounding horn. We drove up and down Highway 53 a little ways, and I learned there was no power steering which is why the wheel is so big; the car only went 40 miles per hour. No seatbelts and one little tiny windshield wiper! Definitely not an ideal car for a family vacation, but the crank windows made it okay for us to enjoy on a little ride.

When we got back to the house, it was time to go home as tomorrow was Sunday, and Jennifer and I were leaving.

When we got back, we all sat on the swing, watched the sunset, and talked about when my grandparents were our age. They had no TV, no video games, and no air conditioning. They even had to walk to school in the snow. And they attended a school where the teacher slept in the schoolhouse and only taught reading, writing, and math. After the sunset, we all went inside to go to bed. I was surprised to see my grandad was not in the bed so I went right to sleep. Grandad was in his office across the hall. As I began to drift off, I heard a piano accordion solo of “Wild Goose Waltz.” He was practicing for a gig next weekend, and my eye bags were going to be luggage the next day. An hour later, he put the accordion away and came to bed and turned on the chainsaw of snores.

The next morning he woke me up and asked, “Are you ready? We are going to church this morning at Marak, and your mom is going to pick you and Jennifer up after it’s over. I thought, “Oh, boy! I’m gonna be pooped.” However, I made it to the church - now the service, that’s another story.

Now that I look back on it all, anytime I think about it, I get warm inside and all my troubles disappear. I will cherish those memories forever.

District Four Youth Counselor Ryan Jansa was born in San Angelo in 1979. His parents are Leonard and Sandra Jansa. He grew up in Wall, Texas, and still lives there today. Ryan is a lifelong member of SPJST. His parents purchased his life insurance certificate when he was born.

Ryan became active in Lodge 49, Rowena Youth Club when he was in kindergarten. The next year, they started a youth club in Wall. He was a member of Lodge 160, San Angelo until he graduated from high school.

Youth Counselor for District Four. He enjoys his new role with SPJST and looks forward to keeping the youth program going for future generations.

Ryan enjoyed playing baseball with Wall Little League. His dad was his coach and even built a baseball field in the backyard to practice on.

Ryan didn’t always want to participate in Youth Achievement Day (YAD). He didn’t like to complete his projects, but he enjoyed the prize money awarded at YAD. As an adult leader, Ryan knows the value of completing and competing with YAD projects. It taught Ryan important things like cooking, sewing, and building skills. His mom still has

some of his projects hanging in her house today.

Ryan enjoyed going to camp each year and participating in all the activities. He continues the tradition of attending SPJST camp with his youth club as a chaperone.

Ryan attended Angelo State University and received a degree in Business Management. He works for Concho Valley Transit as the Facilities Manager.

The youth club was started with nine youth. The youth enjoy meeting each month and completing crafts with each other. In 2021, Ryan campaigned hard at the district annual meeting and was elected District —SPJST—

they limp along they stoop they strain they suffer in place almost defeated yet ever hopeful their fate in the hands of the emergency room they pray for cures they wait for miracles.

Lodge 47, Seaton youth enjoys school Dear Vestnik Readers, I am enjoying school so far. I have the coolest teacher in fourth grade. We have the best seating in the whole school. Instead of desks, we have tables and chairs.

Yesterday, we went to Salado Creek.

I had the best time. I am looking forward to going again.

Dear Readers, The youth attended the lodge spaghetti luncheon on Sunday, August 22, 2021. We were invited to join the mother lodge for their meeting, but a motion was made to postpone it until September. So we were able to enjoy the spaghetti meal and play bingo instead. Youth Leader Lynda mentioned that we would probably hold a zoom meeting soon to go over State YAD results and future upcoming activities.

A big thank you to Bessie’s Catering for providing the delicious spaghetti meal and to the mother lodge for hosting a fun-filled day. Stay tuned for more youth activities!

2021 Youth Club Member Update - Merit Points and Meeting Attendance Second Quarter Merit Points and Meeting Attendance The totals below in the column labeled “Pts” are merit points earned in the January to December 2021 youth year.

This is total merit points for the 2021 youth year. Please see “What is the Merit Point System?” for complete information about the contest.

The number in the column labeled “Mtgs” is the number of meetings each youth club member has attended from January to December 2021. Please see “What is an Active Youth Member?” below to determine number of meetings needed to participate in youth activities.

What is the Merit Point System?

Youth club members earn merit points for participating in SPJST lodge, district, and state activities. At the end of the youth year, points are totaled and the youth with the highest points in the youth club receive cash awards.

Contest Dates January 1 to December 31, 2021 Merit Point Contest Age Divisions Junior—Entering Kindergarten or Age 5 to Age 12 Teen—Age 13 Years to High School Senior Rules The youth leader or assistant youth leader is responsible for keeping track of the merit points for each active member of the youth club. The points are to be sent to the State Fraternal Director on the Quarterly and Merit Point Reports each quarter. Youth club members are also encouraged to keep up with their points and turn them in to the youth leader on a quarterly basis. This system helps both the youth leader and the youth member keep better records of youth participation.

Current, official Quarterly and Merit Point Reports, available from the State Fraternal Director, may only be used in the Merit Point Contest.

The Quarterly and Merit Point Reports sent to the State Fraternal Director by the youth leader will be kept on file for at least six months following the conclusion of the contest.

Merit points are earned for only those activities listed under Youth Point Values.

An activity can only earn points in one category on the point sheet.

When in doubt about any activity earning points, contact the State Fraternal Director prior to the contest conclusion.

Everyone will be subject to the same rules in every contest. Failure to comply with any rule shall mean immediate withdrawal.

Merit Point Awards Awards are presented on the district and state levels in the junior and teen merit point contests. At each District YAD, the Home Office presents first through third place awards to top qualifying junior and teen youth club members. The top three junior and teen youth club members with the most points in each district will receive awards. In the event of a tie, all who tied for first through third places will receive the award.

A youth may only receive the state award once in the age division. State Teen and State Junior awards are presented at State YAD. District Junior and Teen Point Awards First Place - $30 Second Place - $25 Third Place - $20 What is an Active Youth Member?

A youngster with a current SPJST insurance certificate may enter the youth program the youth year that he/she will be entering kindergarten.

To be considered active, youth club member must attend a majority (seven) of the monthly meetings during the year. The youth must attend the majority of these meetings at his/her home youth club. In those instances where a lodge does not have a youth club, the youngster may attend adult lodge meetings or the meetings of another youth club. The youngster will be eligible for camp and Youth Achievement Day (YAD) after the completion of his/her kindergarten year. Active youth members must be single and not be pregnant or a parent.

The age of the youth on January 1 of

the current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.).

The 2021 youth year began January 1 and ends December 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school.

In Memoriam In Memory of Charlie Amos, Sr. Charles D. Amos, Sr. - Christian, husband, father, grandfather, and master electrician - completed his final job on Saturday, September 4, 2021.

Visitation with the family was held Thursday, September 9 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Seaton Brethren Church. A memorial service was on Friday, September 10 at 3 p.m. at Seaton Brethren Charles Amos, Sr. Church.

Born on a farm near Cartersville, Georgia, to Charlie Clifford Amos and Lula Chambers Amos on December 7, 1937, he learned the meaning of hard work and family values having four brothers, a sister, and 11 half brothers and sisters.

Charles came to Temple, Texas, at the age of 17 anxious to learn how to be an electrician from his Uncle Tom Amos.

He purchased Amos Electric Supply in 1968, built the business and more than likely provided electrical work at your home or business since that time. Up until a few weeks ago, he was still helping friends and neighbors anyway he could.

Charles was always a farmer and cattleman at heart. When he no longer worked at farming, he enjoyed taking a Sunday afternoon drive in East Bell County looking at and commenting on the crops - exactly how much rain was needed, how to get rid of the grasshoppers, and how the new equipment was much better than plowing with two mules.

Charles was a member of SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone. He was also an active member of Seaton Brethren Church, serving as chairman of the board; he felt God called him to take care of it and its members. He had been there so long, he knew every nook and cranny of the old building and often worked behind the scenes to assure the church’s success and continued restoration.

Charles didn’t know when to stop climbing ladders. He was relentless at

loving and helping people. He didn’t have words; he had action. He was more comfortable with a job than a discussion. He was so proud of his family and never gave up on them. We will miss his generous heart and his hard-working hands.

Charles is survived by wife Roberta Amos; son Charles Amos, Jr., wife Whitney, and grandchildren Carsen and Chip Amos; son Joel Amos, wife Jessica, and grandchildren Elijah and Ameira Amos; step-daughter Neely Jones, spouse Paulino Castillo; and brother Marshall Amos of Rome, Georgia.

In Memory of Gladys Havemann Gladys Albina Hilsher Havemann, age 94, died peacefully at her son’s home on Tuesday, August 24, 2021, surrounded by her loving family.

Visitation was on Tuesday, September 7 from 4 to 7 p.m. Service and burial were held Wednesday, September 8 at 10 a.m. Gladys Havemann Gladys was born at home in the small Czech community of Roznov, Texas, the seventh child of Albina Halamicek Hilsher and Charles Hilsher, on July 24, 1927. She and her siblings grew up on a farm, and Gladys boasted that they had more fun than any kids have today.

As a young woman, Gladys worked as a bookkeeper at Hilsher’s Home Supply. Together, Gladys and Warren enjoyed their twins, traveled, and danced. They built their country home on part of the old family homestead where they had a huge vegetable garden, fruit trees, and berry vines. Gladys even had a small garden at her home on

Redan where she enjoyed working in her yard, visited with the “best neighbors,” and gave treats to all the dogs that came to her porch.

Gladys was proud of her Czech heritage and took her family to the Czech Republic in 2002 where they met with relatives.

Gladys was a member of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston for 76 years and Sons of Hermann.

Gladys is survived by twin sons Ronnie and wife Francesca, and Donnie and wife Carol. Gladys was extremely proud of her boys; she would happily tell everyone she met that she had twin sons.

Gladys was blessed with grandchildren Brian and wife Tracy, Melissa Zahn and husband Steven, Amanda, Lisa Calderon, Darren and wife Kristina, Nicholas and wife Jamie, Darrell and wife Nanda; great-grandchildren Austin Grubbs, Derek Grubbs, Trevor Grubbs, Colby, Lane, Landon Zahn, Katelyn, Carly Zahn, Dylan, Joshua Calderon, Nathan, Sophia Calderon, and Bradleigh, Benjamin, Elizabeth, and Shelby. She is also survived by sisters Josephine Pflughaupt and Ruth Martinak; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Warren; parents; sister Eleanora Lange; and brothers Alfred, Charles, John, and Harold.

In Memory of Anton Machacek Anton David Machacek was born September 2, 1939, in Port Lavaca, Texas, and grew up in the Czech farming community at Six Mile. He was proud of a 23-year career in the United States Navy and the global adventures this career offered.

He was equally Anton Machacek proud of his family, including his “bride” of 60 years Joan; children Catherine, David, and Daniel; and grandchildren Talitha, Adriel, and Joshua.

In 1975, he settled his family on a small farm in Moulton. There, he also

started an antique business, which he ran until retiring a second time in 2005.

Anton continued woodworking to the end of his life, spending countless hours at a scroll saw, crafting beautiful crosses, toys, and Christmas ornaments. Many of these were gifted to friends and family.

Those he sold at regional craft shows funded annual donations to the South Texas Children’s Home. His woodwork has been featured at Cuero Heritage Museum and Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange.

At his core, however, Anton was a farmer and a Czech farmer to be sure.

He loved to plant things - vegetables, fruit trees, flowers, anything that might grow. He loved to nurture and tend them. He kept a neat garden, and he always raised more than he needed. Most who knew him shared in the communion of this abundance of pears, plums, oranges, lemons, squash, potatoes, okra, beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, and his prized cushaws.

Anton was a member of SPJST Lodge 8, Weimar. He repaired the chairs for the Velehrad School that was moved to Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center at the Fayette County Fairgrounds in LaGrange. Anton was elected Fraternalist of the Year for District Six. He was serving as vice president of Lodge 8, Weimar, and he was a delegate at the 2021 SPJST Convention.

Anton left his earthly garden on August 25, 2021, to join his daughter Catherine and parents Rudy and Marie in eternal life.

Graveside service was on Monday, August 30 at 11:15 a.m. at Hillside Cemetery in Cuero.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church Yorktown Building Fund.

Ones serving on the Czech Family Histories V Book Team have served on almost all 20-plus books TCGS has published to date. We have set the bar high and are dedicated to publishing only books that we can take pride in as a society and within each of our own hearts. Our goal continues to be the same as we want you to be proud of having your article(s) published in our books.

With the above said, the decision was made to extend the submission deadline to September 25, 2021. We plan to have an in-person event on Saturday, September 25 at Caldwell Civic Center. The submission date will coincide with the event date making it easier for you.

Czech Family Histories V article submission deadline is fast approaching Did your family history story (stories) appear in either of the previous four volumes of Czech Family Histories published by TCGS in 2005 or 2007? If so, maybe you are wondering how to update your article other than with newfound names and/or dates. Why not go back and review some of the items learned from the January 23, 2021, webinar, Using Social History to Enhance Family Stories. Susan Kaufman pointed us towards many sources in which family histories can move beyond names, places and dates. (Susan’s speaker handout was included in the February OZ as well).

3. If you do not have access to a computer, a typewritten hard copy will be accepted. We are sorry, but we cannot accept handwritten articles.

4. Articles should be typed using number 12 Times New Roman Font and be single-spaced with doublespacing between paragraphs. Margins should be set at one inch.

5. If at all possible, only black and white photos should be submitted as the book will not be published with color photos. If color photos are submitted, they will be published in black and white. Photos should be of good quality. Quality copies can be made at Wal-Mart, Walgreens, or CVS Pharmacies for your convenience at a very low cost.

6. Please do not send original photos as they cannot be returned.

7. Please be sure to write the names of ALL persons on the back of the photos as they are viewed from the front along with your name, address, and phone number, in the event we need to contact you.

8. It is best not to submit an article laid out in a particular manner as this, as a rule, does not comply with the book layout. Please DO NOT embed photos in the article.

9. Because of the number of printers involved, some do not recognize the Czech diacritical markings and WILL change the letters, resulting in possible incorrect spellings, especially

with names. Having said this, please do not use the Czech diacritical markings.

10. Genealogical outlines and charts should not be submitted, as due to spacing, they cannot be reproduced.

If this type of information is to be submitted, the submitter will need to place the information in paragraph form prior to submitting.

11. Texas Czech Genealogical Society reserves the right to make minor corrections ONLY, i.e. grammatical or sentence structure. TCGS will not write articles. If the book committee has any questions regarding the content, contact will be made with the article author.
