Vestnik Valentine Time Here it is almost mid-January, and Valentine’s Day is just about a month away. That means it’s time for Vestnik Valentines! This is an annual feature that we always look forward to producing.

Please share your Vestnik Valentine greetings at spjst.org. The back page of this week’s Vestnik features an easy QR code that you can scan with the camera app on your smart phone. This will then take you directly to the page online where you can submit your valentine. We can also include a photo with your valentine for only $5. Youth Webcast - Sunday, Jan. 17 The Second Sunday Youth Webcast that was originally scheduled for Sunday, January 10 has been rescheduled for this Sunday, January 17 at 6 p.m.

We appreciate the interest from our youth, parents, and leaders who have already signed up for the webcast. This month’s event will feature a past youth club member who is applying what he learned in the SPJST Youth Program to his high-end wooden product manufacturing company that he recently founded.

Sincere Sympathy We extend heartfelt sympathy to SPJST President Brian Vanicek and wife Joan. Joan’s mother Evelyn Green, 94, of Cyclone passed away on Saturday, December 26. A private funeral mass was held on Thursday, December 31. A celebration of life memorial service will be held later in 2021. Please keep President and Mrs. Vanicek and their families in your thoughts and prayers.

From the SPJST Supreme Lodge Minutes of the Special Called Meeting of the SPJST Supreme Lodge held on December 22, 2020 via video conference PRESIDING Supreme Lodge Chairman John Engelke called the meeting to order at 10 a.m.

ATTENDING Supreme Lodge—Brian Vanicek, President; Delisle Doherty, Vice President; Leonard Mikeska, Chief Financial Officer; Roy Vajdak, Controller; Donnie Victorick - District One/Vice Chairman; Jesse Pospisil - District Two; John Engelke - District Three/Chairman; Bobby Davis - District Four; Bradley Stavinoha - District Five; Annie Vahalik - District Six; Regina House - District Seven. OPENING OF MEETING The meeting was opened by Chairman Engelke with a welcome to all. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

PURPOSE OF THE MEETING The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the budget for 2021 to 2025, operational goals and plans for 2021, and key performance indicators (KPIs) per department.

BUDGET Controller Vajdak displayed and explained line items - past and projections.

Director Victorick moved that we keep the lodge member paid up certificate payment at 1.25 percent payable to the lodges (same as before). President Vanicek seconded, and the motion carried unanimously.

There was discussion about the district allocation funds given to each district to pay for spring meetings and fall fun days. President Vanicek moved to retain $14,000 for 2021 for the seven district spring meetings only, and the fall fun days would be on the districts to pay for on their own. Director House seconded the motion. Director Victorick moved to amend the motion to give the districts $500 each to pay towards a fall fun day activity. The districts would be required to request the additional funds and the Supreme Lodge would have to approve; the amendment was seconded by Director Engelke. Vote was taken to accept the amendment, and the vote carried unanimously. Vote was taken on the amended motion which would grant a potential total of $17,500, and the motion carried unanimously.

Recess for lunch was taken from 11:54 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

OPERATIONAL GOALS, PLANS, AND KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPIs) FOR 2021 Each of the executive officers presented and discussed in detail their reports on goals, plans, and KPIs for each of their respective departments.

INFORMATION SECURITY POLICY Controller Vajdak reviewed amended sections of the Information Security Policy, Paragraphs 4.1 and 4.3 of Section II were adopted as amendments, and Section XIII was added to the Information Security Policy. Controller Vajdak moved that we have more stable and stronger passwords. Director Victorick seconded the motion, and the motion carried unanimously.

ADJOURNMENT There being no further business, a motion to adjourn was made by Director Davis, seconded by Vice President Doherty, and the motion passed unanimously. The meeting was adjourned at 3 p.m.

Lodge 24, Cyclone: It’s a wonderful time of the year With a small nip of cold in the air and fireplace smoke in the air, Christmas was just a few weeks away . . . and it was time for the officers and committee members of Lodge 24, Cyclone to gather for their annual Christmas party.

Officers and their families of Lodge 24, Cyclone began arriving at Oscar Store near Temple around 6 p.m. on Monday, December 7, 2020, to visit and have a cold beverage before those delicious onion ring appetizers began to be served by Oscar Store staff. Following the onion rings, we enjoyed Oscar Store’s delicious hamburgers and fries.

For dessert, Treasurer Linda Wilde ordered a cake so we had something sweet to top off the delicious meal.

Our program began with President Daniel Wilde welcoming everyone to the party, and we all joined in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence followed as we remembered Pearl Harbor and those who died in service to our country since December 7 was the anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941. President Wilde got a little

teary-eyed as he told of his experience when he visited the Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, a few years back.

President Wilde welcomed SPJST President Brian Vanicek and wife Joan to the party. President Wilde then gave a short talk about the past pandemic year and how sad we all were to see the doors of Flag Hall closed and the hall empty for all the past months since COVID-19 has affected our world. He also mentioned that there would be some upcoming events with social distancing and other safety measures in place in the hall.

He turned the meeting over to Vice President Brenda Maddux. She lit two candles for the two Lodge 24 members who passed away in 2020. A moment of silence was observed as we remembered

them in our hearts.

Vice President Maddux also presented outgoing Youth Leader Kim Campbell with a plaque for all her years of service.

It was then time to find out who was naughty or nice . . . well, you might say, lucky or unlucky as we drew for door prizes! It was wonderful to see the expressions on members’ faces as they tried to decide which prize they wanted to select from on our table of prizes. Everyone went home with a little something to remind them of the fun we had at the 2020 Christmas party.

The couple was married at Caldwell Brethren Church in Caldwell, Texas, on November 7, 1970, by the late Brother Henry Beseda.

Old business included a thank you to everyone who supported the annual holiday strudel sale. It was a huge success.

The annual fundraiser which was tentatively scheduled for Saturday, February 6, 2021, has been canceled due to COVID-19 precautions. The local radio advertisement has been discontinued as the Home Office continues to sponsor a portion of the Czech Sunday polka party.

With no other business to discuss, December birthdays were announced.

“Happy Birthday” was sung to Rose Jurcik who was present.

The meeting adjourned, and the social began with 13 members and three officers present.

Lodge 142, Houston members meet by conference call Lodge 142, Houston had a conference call on Sunday, December 13, 2020.

President Dennis Hermis called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. Present were 33 members and two guests. A moment of silence was observed for departed member Walter Rosilier. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Zac Coleman.

Roll call of officers showed all present except Youth Leader Amanda Muzny and Assistant Youth Leader Kyle Herrington.

Secretary Elizabeth Hermis read the minutes from the November meeting.

All approved the motion that remunerations for 2021 will be the same as 2020.

By-laws will be approved in 2021 since it is a convention year.

Meetings for 2021 will be approved at the January 17, 2021, meeting.

Birthdays for December are Chris Schleider on the 2nd, Chris Comberell on the 22nd, Brielle Comberell on the 29th, and JR Coleman on the 30th.

Anniversaries are Keith and Amy Kieschnick - 23 years on December 6 and Chris and Janet Comberell - eight years on December 12. Congratulations!

Lodge 151, Wharton elects 2021 officers SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton held its quarterly meeting and Christmas social on Monday, December 14, 2020, at the Wharton Depot Museum. David Bucek led the prayer before the meal. A catered turkey and dressing meal was served at 6:30 p.m. to seven members and four guests.

President Gerald Macha called the meeting to order at 7:10 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and a moment of silence was held for our departed members. The roll was called, and all officers were present. President Macha then welcomed special guests SPJST District Six Director Annie Vahalik and husband Philip, District Six Regional General Agent (RGA) Carolina Covarrubia, and Frances Macha.

The March minutes and treasurer’s report were handed out to the members.

After they had been reviewed, David Bucek made a motion to accept them.

Edith Molberg seconded the motion.

Motion passed.

Secretary Janie Bucek reported the amount of money Lodge 151 received from the refund to lodges for the year 2019. Next, she stated two death claims had been paid. Last, she announced Lodge 151 had one transfer member and three new members.

Janie then gave the fraternal activities coordinator’s report.

David Bucek presented the cemetery report. He announced a new road was fi-

nally constructed in the Velehrad Cemetery. David stated the 12-inch sidewalks along the road in the Shiner Cemetery were completed. He also mentioned that it cost a lot more money to mow the Moravia and Velehrad cemeteries this year.

Due to Covid-19, the trustees from Gonzales were unable to mow the two cemeteries for several months.

Edith Molberg made a motion to accept three new members to Lodge 151.

David Bucek seconded the motion, and the motion passed. We would like to welcome Shaianne Ray Cruz, Shawn Michael Cruz, and Valeria A. Hundl to Lodge 151.

Under new business, Edith Molberg made a motion to accept our new transfer member. Carolyn Bucek seconded the motion, and the motion passed. We would like to welcome Benedict “Bennie” Hundl to Lodge 151.

Carolyn Bucek made a motion to donate $100 to S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living Center in Needville Christmas activity fund; $100 to S.P.J.S.T Center Living Center in Hillje Christmas activity fund; and $100 to Share in Wharton. Edith Molberg seconded the motion, and the motion passed. David Bucek made a motion to donate $500 to the SPJST District Six Cemetery Organization to help pay for the new road in the Velehrad Cemetery. Edith Molberg seconded the motion, and it passed. Janie Bucek then made a motion to donate $100 to the Wharton Depot Museum for their train display.

Officers for 2021 were elected. David Bucek made a motion, seconded by Bennie Hundl, to elect our current officers by acclamation. The motion passed. Director Vahalik said she appreciated our warm welcome and enjoyed getting to know our members. She reported she attended the Supreme Lodge Strategic Planning Session in November. Director Vahalik also discussed some things that SPJST has been doing. She also told us to call her if we need help with anything.

RGA Carolina Covarrubia welcomed

VĚSTNÍK new SPJST Director Vahalik to District Six. She said this has been a challenging year. She is having to communicate with clients by mail and telephone.

Lodge 180, Burleson gives $1,000 to SPJST Vestnik in memory of martha zavodny SPJST Lodge 180, Burleson presented a $1,000 donation to the Vestnik in loving memory of Martha Zavodny, who passed away on July 29, 2020.

Martha is the mother of Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny, pictured far left. Also pictured with the donation check are Debbie (Zavodny) Veselka, back, left, Faye (Zavodny) Hudson, and the girls’ father, Milton Zavodny.

Thanks to Lodge 180, Burleson for the generous donation which will be used for the preservation and betterment of the Vestnik and member communication.

Lodge 179, Warrenton continues to meet virtually SPJST Lodge 179, Warrenton continues to have virtual meetings. For the December meeting, members had a drive-through meal at JW’s Restaurant in Carmine.

We are in the process of transferring five members to Lodge 179 from Lodge 88, Houston. Names will be given when the paperwork has been completed.

We are all trying to wear our face coverings, social distance, and wash our hands often, but COVID-19 just hit our lodge. Lodge 179 President Ruby Juergens is in the recovery stage. Our prayers and best wishes are with her.

We continue to recommend that everyone stay home as much as possible.

Things will get better . . . just have patience.

SPJST Scholarship deadline is February 1, 2021 Dear Members, Whether students are studying online or on campus, they need funding to make it happen. The SPJST Scholarship Program is here to help. Since its inception in 1984, more than $1,600,000 in scholarships have been awarded to deserving young members through the program. In 2020, 43 general scholarships, two technical scholarships, and two leadership grants were presented. In addition, five district merit scholarships, one state merit scholarship, and two royalty scholarships were awarded this summer for a total of 55 scholarships and grants presented for the year.

SPJST scholarships are funded through an annual allocation by SPJST and thanks to voluntary contributions received through our 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive, memorial donations, and endowments. Donations are tax deductible.

Applications for scholarships are sent out by email from September through January upon request – or you may download the applications at www.spjst.org. The Fraternal Department must receive the completed application and all requested information by February 1, 2021. Recipients are announced in April.

The following scholarships are available through the program: General and Technical Scholarships – For all SPJST members Leadership Grants – For active SPJST youth club members – Applicants may only apply for this grant in their senior year of high school. Active youth club members are strongly encouraged to apply for the General Scholarship — or Technical Scholarship if attending a technical school) and the Leadership Grant.

All interested SPJST members who wish to apply for a scholarship must meet the following criteria: r Have an active SPJST insurance certificate in force for at least one full year as of February 1; if the membership is in

the form of an annuity, the amount must be at least $10,000. r Be a full-time student. r Hold an active SPJST insurance certificate and/or annuity for the duration of the scholarship. r Be a high school graduate or equivalent. r Attend an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or technical college – as designated by one of the six regional accrediting bodies in the United States.

Best wishes to all SPJST members who wish to apply for a scholarship this year. I hope to see many of our young people apply for the 2021 scholarships.

Moms and dads; grandmothers and grandfathers, help us spread the word and encourage the special young members in your lives to apply!

On a Related Note . . .

Members and lodges wishing to make a positive difference in the life of a young person and at the same time establish a lasting memorial may establish or contribute to an SPJST Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship may be established in your name or the name of the individual you wish to honor. SPJST Endowed Scholarships may be established starting at $10,000. By definition, an endowed scholarship is one in which the principle remains intact and only the interest is awarded each year. Once established, your scholarship will be managed by SPJST. Your endowment creates a permanent funding source that will grow over time and will support deserving students today and in the future.

In establishing an SPJST Endowed Scholarship, you have the opportunity to set the criteria for your SPJST Endowed Scholarship. For example, you may wish to direct your scholarship fund to reward high achievement students who are pursuing a specific field of study. Other criteria for you to consider are specific colleges or universities, areas of academic interest or extracurricular involvement, community service, or hometown.

Please know that in establishing restrictive criteria, you will be limiting the pool of qualified recipients. More about that later. Also, in accordance with IRS publication 526, located at http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p526.pdf, a donor may not select a specific individual as a beneficiary of their gift, i.e.

scholarship recipients. SPJST Endowed Scholarships differ from others in that they are truly the gift that keeps giving.

An SPJST Endowed Scholarship is a perpetual gift because only the interest is applied towards the scholarship while the principle continuously grows. Endowed scholarships are a wonderful way to honor a loved one or link your legacy with the future.

The minimum gift needed to establish a named, endowed SPJST scholarship is $10,000. This amount can be paid all at once or in payments. Once the fund reaches the $20,000 amount, the scholarship will be awarded annually in the honoree’s name. Until $20,000 is reached, the interest gained is reinvested in the fund. At the primary donor’s request, an endowed scholarship will be awarded every other year, provided that the endowment balance totals at least $10,000.

There are many ways to fund an endowment, including gifts of cash, bequests, securities, life insurance, retirement assets, or properties.

Here’s Another Option . . .

As an alternative to an SPJST Endowed Scholarship, donors may elect to award a one-time scholarship in the name of an individual, organization, or business. The minimum donation needed to award a one-time SPJST scholarship in the name of an individual, organization, or business is $1,000. Just as with

VĚSTNÍK the SPJST Endowed Scholarship, donors seeking to award a one-time SPJST scholarship also have the opportunity to set the criteria for your SPJST Scholarship. Criteria should not be so narrowly defined that it is difficult or impossible to find qualified applicants and, therefore, to honor the donor’s intent. Following are some general criteria that may be considered by donors: • Award restricted to students in a specified college and/or major.

• Award restricted to students from a specific school or county.

• Applicability only to high school graduates or undergraduate students or open to both.

• Participation in extracurricular activities such as honor societies and student organizations.

In the event a donor proposes criteria which are too narrowly defined, SPJST will explore the implications of such closely defined criteria with the donor.

When the World Health Organization declared a COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, hundreds of millions of people across the globe were forced to change how they go about their daily lives, including how they exercise.

Health-conscious adults accustomed to exercising at local gyms had to find new ways to exercise in the wake of the pandemic. Many gyms were forced to close in areas hit hard by COVID-19, and that left many people without access to fitness equipment like weights and cardiovascular machines. Resilient men and women soon found ways to exercise, and many of them embraced walking.

Though walking might not provide the same level of intensity that fitness enthusiasts are accustomed to, the Arthritis Foundation® notes the various ways walking benefits the body.

• Walking protects against heart disease and stroke. Walking strengthens the heart and protects it against heart disease.

The AF also notes that walking lowers blood pressure. In fact, post-menopausal women who walk just one to two miles per day can lower their blood pressure by

nearly 11 points in 24 weeks, while women who walk for 30 minutes a day can reduce their risk of stroke by 20 percent.

• Walking strengthens the bones. New York-based Plancher Orthopedics and Sports Medicine notes that walking can stop the loss of bone mass for people with osteoporosis. In addition, postmenopausal women who incorporate 30 minutes of walking into their daily fitness regimens can reduce their risk of hip fractures by 40 percent.

• Walking can extend your life. The AF notes that one study linked walking to longer life expectancy, finding that people who exercise regularly in their 50s and 60s were 35 percent less likely to die over the next eight years than people who never walked.

• Walking can improve mood. One study from researchers at California State University, Long Beach, found that the more steps people taking during the day, the better their moods were.

• Walking can lower risk for cognitive decline. Walking also has been linked to a lower risk for age-related cognitive decline. A study from the University of Virginia Health System found that men between the ages of 71 and 93 who walked more than a quarter of a mile per day had half the incidence of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease compared to men who walked less. In addition, a study from researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, found that age-related memory decline was lower among women ages 65 and older who walked 2.5 miles per day than it was among women who walked less than half a mile per week.

Foot traffic increased as people were forced to find new ways to exercise during the COVID-19 pandemic. Walking is a great way to stay in shape and even provides some lesser known benefits for people who walk each day.

She tears up at the breakfast table her little wild squirrel named Stumpy has not come back to peek in her window to eat out of her hand to beg for a handout on her porch where was the inquisitive squirrel who always stopped by to say hello she named it Stumpy for the fact that it had no tail it had become a regular in her backyard a friend in the wild who somehow adapted despite the fact it had no tail a disadvantaged squirrel who miraculously survived stealing from the bird feeder climbing the oak tree talking to her in squirrel chatter it had become a part of her life as any child might be she protected it looked forward to its visits came to love it in a personal way

VĚSTNÍK Stumpy was her daily companion and its visits became the highlight of her day the thing she looked forward to the squirrel became her company always coming around for treats and attention it always came back except for this once now it had not been seen for weeks and there was little doubt something had happened to it and so she cries for the little squirrel who had become a dear friend a very unique squirrel who came everyday to talk to her and delight her with its personality and its closeness this time Stumpy did not come back and she missed it terribly now she weeps in its remembering and mourns for it as one would for any good friend who passes from this earth her furry friend who will always have a place in her soft heart

This was the best season yet. We had friends come over for Christmas. We got a trampoline for Christmas. We got tons

of presents. I got a new Nintendo 2DS. And, I got new games for it. We went to a friend’s house on New Year’s Eve for a sleepover. Then we went to Uncle William’s house for the New Year. There, I got to pet their dog Riley, and she is so funny.

Lodge 47, Seaton Lodge 185 youth: winter break fun New Braunfels youth reports on activities Dear Vestnik Readers, I had a great winter break. It started out with our lodge’s Christmas party. We performed “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” for the guests.

Then Santa came and gave everyone candy. I won a door prize, and my dad won a poinsettia.

For Christmas, I got good presents.

My presents are a rock tumbler, a trampoline, a new Nintendo DS game “Animal Crossing,” a storm glass, and the new book “Cat Kid Comic Club.” We ate a lot of good food. My favorite was tacos.

After Christmas, we went to the bowling alley. We stayed for five hours. A few days later, we went to the movie theater and watched The Croods 2: A New Age. On New Year’s Eve, my brother and I had a sleepover with our friends. We had a lot of fun. On New Year’s Day, I ate black-eyed peas so I would have good luck in 2021. We need a lot of luck this year.

Now it is over, and we are back at school. Next is my birthday, and I can’t wait. Have a safe 2021!

Keep the focus on fun during family baking Baking is a beloved tradition in many families. Though family baking sessions tend to be especially popular during the holiday season, there’s nothing stopping families from breaking out the flour and having some fun in the kitchen at any time of year.

Fun is the focus when families bake together, and the following are some ways to make such sessions enjoyable for everyone.

Encourage input. The designated family baker may have a host of go-to recipes up his or her sleeve, and baking such specialties might be a necessity on birthdays or during the holiday season.

But all baking sessions need not be beholden to family favorites. Encourage all family members to recommend recipes prior to family baking sessions, even allowing a different person to choose the

recipe each time. This can make the whole family enthusiastic about baking together and may even help families discover some new foods.

Remember that patience is a virtue.

Family baking sessions require patience, especially when young children are involved. Kids' attention spans may wane or they may grow upset if they spill some ingredients. Remain patient at such times and let kids know making a mess is part of the fun of baking together.

Simplify sessions as necessary. Baking with toddlers and school-aged youngsters is going to be different than doing so alongside preteens and adolescents. In addition, consider kids’ maturity levels when planning family baking sessions, as some youngsters might be more than capable of following more challenging recipes. Making sure kids are given age-appropriate tasks or jobs on par with their maturity levels is a great way to keep sessions fun and prevent frustration.

Share the baking bounty. Let everyone indulge a little during the baking session.

If you plan on making cookies, don't hesitate to let everyone snack on a few chocolate chips while preparing the cookies.

And once the bounty is done baking and it’s ready to eat, share it with family, friends and neighbors. Kids will be proud of their creations and want to share them, and that will ensure they’re excited about the next family baking session.

Antonie “Toni” Malcik, age 84, of Seaton, Texas, passed away during the evening hours of Tuesday, December 29, 2020, at her home.

A funeral service was held at Seaton Cemetery on Saturday, January 2, 2021, at 11 a.m. with Bill Waggy officiating.

The family accepted visitors at the cemetery prior to the service at 10 a.m.

Born August 30, Toni Malcik 1936, in Seaton, Toni was the daughter of Jerry Cabla, Sr. and Frances Janacek.

Toni was a lifelong resident of Seaton; she attended grade school in Seaton and in Rogers. She married her first sweetheart, Edwin Schiller, on November 30, 1954. After his passing in 1979, she found love again with I.J. Malcik in 1981. However, again in 1998, Toni was widowed.

She loved having a good time, gambling with friends, and staying up late.

She served many beers to her faithful customers at Tom Sefcik Hall for many years alongside one of her best friends, Alice Sulak. Although Toni had not attended church in quite some time, she was a faithful Christian. Toni loved to spend tremendous amounts of time with her family. For many years, every Sunday Toni cooked a big dinner for her entire family to come to her house, spend time together, and eat. She loved to garden and plant flowers, and she also loved to visit with the squirrels that would come to her yard to enjoy pecans.

Toni will be missed dearly by many friends and family.

She was a member of SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone.

She was preceded in death by her parents Jerry and Frances; her two husband Edwin Schiller and I.J. Malcik; brother Jerry Cabla, Jr.; sisters Dorothy Schiller and Blanch Sexton; and two grandchildren.

Toni leaves behind to cherish her memory sons David Schiller and wife

Robin, Marvin Schiller and wife Tamara, Roy Malcik and wife Kim, and Norman Malcik and wife Donna; daughters Shirley Tuerck and husband Michael, Joyce Davis, and Barbara Walsh; brother Henry Cabla and wife Margie; sister Vallie Mae Pritchard; 20 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; her fur baby Walon; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Resolution of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge Hvezda Texasu, No. 47, Seaton, express our sincere sympathy to the family of our departed brother, EUGENE HEJL. Eugene Hejl, age 84 of Temple, Texas, passed away Friday, December 25, 2020, at a local nursing care facility. Graveside service was held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, January 6 at Seaton Cemetery in Seaton.

Eugene was born on February Eugene Hejl 13, 1936, to Robert and Vlasta (Bravenec) Hejl in Seaton, Texas. He married Anna Mae Lock on April 5, 1980. He enjoyed playing in tarok and domino tournaments through SPJST, and he loved dancing to a good polka.

Eugene worked in the purchasing department at Scott and White Hospital until his retirement. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton and East Highway Baptist Church.

Eugene was preceded in death by parents Robert and Vlasta Hejl; wife Anna Mae Hejl; sister Mildred Bartek; brother Robert Hejl, Jr.; and infant sister Dorothy Hejl.

Visitation was Tuesday, December 22 at 6 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Thiele-Cooper Funeral Home with Reverend Dr. Mark L. Labaj. Rosary was at 10:30 a.m. with a funeral mass at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 23 at St. Joseph Catholic Church Julius Belicek with Reverend Father Anthony Pesek.

He was born September 1, 1936, in Lavaca County to Joe and Hermina Trcalek Belicek, the youngest of seven children.

He worked 31 years for Texas Department of Transportation. He served in the United States Army. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 4, Hallettsville; KJT; Sweet Home American Legion; and Czech Moravian Brethren Church of Vsetin. His hobbies were playing baseball in his younger years, managing baseball, spending time with his family, and watching his children and grandchildren play all types of sports. He was an avid domino player to the point he always knew what you had when you played against him. He also loved gardening, being a farmer, and especially taking care of his prize chicken Henny Penny. He loved to participate in all church functions including bingo, selling raffle tickets, working the

Survivors are his wife of 54 years, Theresa Pesek Belicek; daughters Evon Janak (Brian) of Spring, Naomi Bradicich (Barton) of Victoria, and Pamela Belicek-Rodriguez (Carlos) of Seguin; sons Donnie Belicek (Nicole) of Hallettsville, Brian Belicek (Christina) of Seguin, and Clayton Belicek; grandchildren Demi Janak, Cory Janak, Reno Bradicich, Marjori Ann LaCamera (Daniel), Baxter Bradicich, Abigail Bradicich, Aaron Bradicich, Renee Bradicich, Addison Belicek, Dawson Belicek, Timothy Belicek, Chloe Belicek, Gregory Belicek, and Audrey Belicek; sister Lillie Balusek of Witting; and many nieces and nephews.

TCGS submission deadline nears for Czech Families Histories V In January 2018, Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) announced the publishing of Czech Family Histories V. The project was then placed on hold. We are pleased to announce the publication is once again underway and is projected to be available during our 2021 anniversary year.

It is hard to believe so many years have passed since the publishing of Czech Family Histories, Volumes I through IV. Yet, they have. Volumes I and II were published in 2005, followed

by Volumes III and IV in 2007. TCGS is pleased to announce plans for publishing Czech Family Histories, Volume V. Lives have changed greatly since 2005 and 2007. We have celebrated many marriages, births, and graduations, and we have celebrated the lives of family members who have gone before us. Many who submitted articles for the previous histories are the family genealogist and, through research, new ancestors and family members have been discovered. Possibly several trips to the Czech Republic have been made whereby new photos have been gained of not only ancestors or newly found relatives, but of ancestral homes as well.

Perhaps you do not have an article in any of the previously published volumes, and you would like to write your family history and cherished family memories so they will be documented and preserved but the cost of publishing such a document on your own prohibits it.

If anything mentioned above fits your profile, Texas Czech Genealogical Society would like for you to seriously consider writing and submitting your

story, or stories, along with photos to be part of our Czech Family Histories, Volume V. You do not have to be a member of Texas Czech Genealogical Society in order to participate; however, we would gladly welcome you. Please see the submission guidelines for further information.

NCSML to host virtual author talk with Ariana Neumann (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) – More than two dozen members of the Neumann family were murdered by the Nazis during World War II. Hans Neumann was one of nine surviving family members. While he did not talk about his life during those years, he kept a small box of letters, diary entries, and other memorabilia from that time. The box was given to his daughter, journalist Ariana Neumann, after his death in 2001.

She had the letters translated, revealing the extraordinary truth of her father’s escape from Nazi-occupied Prague. She embarked on a worldwide search, tracing her father’s trail across Europe, revealing choice to assume a fake identity and live out the war undercover, spying for the allies in Germany.

She shares her father’s story in her first book, When Time Stopped: A Memoir of My Father’s War and What Remains, released in February 2020. Everyone needs a friend Hello, and welcome to another edition of SoundCzech, Radio Prague’s Czech language course in which you can learn Czech phrases with the help of song lyrics. The word to look for is kamarád - meaning friend.

I think we can agree that everyone needs good friends. They listen to your problems and are there to support you, even if they occasionally get on your nerves - lezou ti na nervy.
