Head Cook Georgia Barcak of Lodge 88, Houston is all smiles as she proudly displays an award that her team won at this year’s Czhilispiel Czhili Cookoff in Flatonia. Georgia, who is recovering from a September heart surgery, continues the chili cookoff tradition that her husband Eugene Barcak was a part of since the mid-1970s. Eugene passed away in 2014. The award is the first one for the cooking team Zelená Žába or “Green Frog” in its 40 years of cooking chili. Georgia’s team includes Richard, Margie, and Sean Moncrief and Ashley and Jarrod Gorrell. eartbreaking, devastating, unimaginable. Those are a few words that describe the tragedy at the church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, on November 5, 2017. The horrendous shooting took 26 lives, injured 20, and affected our entire nation. Sutherland Springs is located in District Seven and is about 14 miles from Lodge 107, Floresville. My heart goes out to all of the Sutherland Springs’ families, friends, and first responders.

The world may bring deep darkness, but we are the bearers of light.

We’ll join our flames together and shine in the blackest of nights.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the community of Sutherland Springs, Texas, during this very tragic time.

Good News On November 2, the House Ways and Means Committee released its tax reform bill to reduce corporate tax rates and compress individual rates.

The American Fraternal Alliance is still working its way through the provisions that may have a specific impact on life insurers; however, SPJST is happy to report that all exemptions in the 501 section of the Tax Code, including our 501(c)(8) exemption, are retained. In addition, while there are provisions dealing with the taxation of life insurance companies that are still being analyzed; however, there do not appear to be provisions directly impacting the taxation of life insurance products. Finally, though the Committee was looking at making major

changes to retirement savings, contribution limits were not reduced and there are no significant amendments proposed that would change the ability of our members to save on a taxdeferred basis. This is all good news for SPJST and its members who may be considering setting up an IRA or Roth IRA.

Personnel Changes Announced within SPJST Fraternal Department

Dear Members, Please join me in saying farewell to Human Resources Administrator Debbie Klinkovsky who will be retiring from the SPJST Home Office team, effective November 30, 2017. Debbie has been an important part of the SPJST team for 13 years, including the past nine years as Human Resources Administrator. Initially, HR Administrator’s objective was to simply bring together all of SPJST’s bu- Debbie Klinkovsky reaucratic aspects of benefits and administration, such as regulatory reporting, compensation, and oversight of the multiple insurance lines that are a part of our business. As a result, administrative efficiencies were achieved in multiple areas, including our employee health plan, 401K program, and liability and corporate insurance coverages. The position of Human Resources Administrator has evolved to become a partner with senior and department managers and was involved in a variety organizational planning objectives and projects, including employee education, recruiting, and hiring. Thank you to Debbie for a job well done as a vigorous advocate for employees, routinely registering and representing their concerns in discussions with senior management.

In conjunction with Ms. Klinkovsky’s departure, State Youth Director Lynette Talasek has been assigned to serve as Acting Human Resources Administrator.

Ms. Talasek has been cross-training in the HR position for approximately one year. Before working for SPJST, Ms. Talasek served on the administrative staff at Temple College. She received her bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Management from Texas A&M University - Central Texas with a minor in Business Administration.

State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Horak has been assigned to concurrently serve as Acting State Youth Director and State Fraternal Activities Coordinator. Mr. Horak previously served as State Youth Director. Before that he served as Assistant to the Vice President in the SPJST Insurance Department. He received an Audio-Visual Applied Science degree from Texas State Technical College in Waco.

Both Ms. Talasek and Mr. Horak will serve in an “acting” capacity through at least the end of January 2018. At that time, the decision will be made on whether to assign/combine the job titles on a permanent basis. Best wishes to Lynette and Frank in their new and expanded roles.

Lodge Incentive Guidelines

The 2017 Lodge Incentive Guidelines will include membership program incentives and be based upon premium income generated by the lodges. The formula for calculating the Enhanced Premium Refund is:

1. $1.00 for each paid-up certificate; and 2. 2.00% of the lodge’s annual earned premium.

To receive the Enhanced Premium Refund, lodges must meet the following three-point criteria:

1. Hold regular lodge meetings in accordance with Section 88 of the SPJST By-Laws and offer a wellrounded fraternal program.

2. Return all requested paperwork on time by the due date.

3. Submit regular letters/photos to the Věstník.

Living, Loving and Dying in the Church

President’s Notebook

The shooting deaths of 26 men, women, boys, and girls this past Sunday in Sutherland Springs was tragic. Our hearts go out to the families and friends who grieve and to the many whose lives will forever be altered by one man’s rage. Life is so very precious.

In spite of this truism is a wreckless disregard for humanity which, I suppose, has al- Brian Vanicek ways existed — and only been amplified in modern times — by technology.

Already, much has been said, written, and presented in the media to bring some measure of understanding to this tragedy. Of all that has been presented, some of the most meaningful insight can be attributed to Stephen A. Curry, the pastor of La Vernia United Methodist Church, located just seven miles north of Highway 87. In a New York Times editorial which appeared this morning (November 8, 2017), Pastor Curry provides readers of the esteemed Times with a perspective that so many of us know and to which we can relate. I want to share it with you: Living, Loving and Dying in the Church

It’s important to know that in Wilson County in Texas, site of the horrific shooting that killed 26 people at the First Baptist Church on Sunday, life revolves around the schools and the churches. It’s a rural county of five small towns, and the biggest industry is cattle ranching. It is also a place where schools don’t plan anything on Wednesday nights because that is a church night.

I am the pastor at La Vernia United Methodist Church, seven miles west of Sutherland Springs, where the shooting occurred. Everyone here knew someone associated with the First Baptist Church. One of the dead was a parent whose child was in the 4-H club with a child in our program. Another victim was a lifelong friend of one of

my parishioners; they graduated from La Vernia High 38 years ago. People from my congregation had attended Bible study at First Baptist or worked with its members on a mission project.

The idea that such a thing would happen in a sacred space, a place where families are supposed to be safe, has angered many people.

Churches are places where the spirit of God is felt, where the presence of God is very real, where manners are expected and vulgarity is shunned. The church is where we, with all our faults and failures, come into the presence of the divine to find grace, to find peace, to rest in the arms of the Lord. The church is a sanctuary in the literal sense of the word, set apart, safe, protecting. All this was shattered.

Things like this don’t happen in small towns like ours. Those who moved to the country to protect their family from the perceived dangers of the city were especially shaken.

Almost every family here identifies with a church. In some cases, it’s more a matter of a family tradition than active participation. But for weddings and funerals, it is usually the “family church” that’s called. Even so, families go to different churches as they find activities that fit their needs. The Boy Scouts at the Methodist church. Soccer at the Roman Catholic church. Lions Club meetings at the Church of Christ.

One church has a clinic while another has a day care and still another a weekly lunch for the elderly. The churches work together to run a food bank, sponsor blood drives, and hold community worship services on Thanksgiving and Good Friday.

In our community, there is a deep, solid, underlying faith in God, even if it doesn’t manifest itself in church attendance every week. Immediately after the shooting, the churches started receiving and making offers of help. They rushed meals to those grieving and to the emer-

gency workers. They were called on to help fund funerals and host a blood drive.

Lutheran, Catholic, Methodist, Baptist, nondenominational — it didn’t matter. Christ commands us to love our neighbor as ourselves, and the churches are where the people come together to serve in ways bigger than each of us can serve individually.

On Sunday night, a theology student at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, about 20 miles north, posted on Facebook about a prayer vigil he was organizing. I went to participate and was asked to join him in leading it. I saw people from my own church. I saw people from one of the nondenominational churches, a Catholic church, and a Methodist church in Floresville. Together we sang songs

of worship and praise. Together we prayed for the victims and their families. The people from many churches became the Church, the one Body of Christ — holy, universal and apostolic — in love and compassion.

A church in Wilson County is a community center where good people strive to do good for fellow human beings. A church in Wilson County is a home for extended family to share their lives.

A church in Wilson County is a place where we come to mourn losses, grieve the death of a friend or relative, celebrate the joys of life and love. A church in Wilson County is a place where we connect with the God who loves us, watches over us, and, in the end, welcomes us home.

She asked District Two King Ryan Festa (47) and Queen Shelby Horak (80) to read their state runners-up speeches. We gave a special shout out to Director Jesse Pospisil (29) and wife Linda (29) for their dedication to the youth at camp. They were presented with cards signed by the youth for their gracious donation of hamburgers and ice cream floats. The youth showered them with marshmallows. Christmas ornament contest was judged.

Lodge 9, Snook readies for Christmas activities

The November 1, 2017, SPJST Lodge 9, Snook meeting was called to order by President Donnie Hejl at 7 p.m.

Several youth club members led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Roll of officers was called. Minutes from the October meeting were approved as read. Hall manager, FAC, and treasurer reports were given.

The youth club will go skating on November 5, put together Samaritan’s Purse Christmas boxes on November 12, and ride in the Bryan-College Station Christmas Parade on December 3.

Afterwards, they will sing at the Manor and have a pizza party. They donated $100 to Wounded Warriors.

Motion was passed to accept our new applicants – Josef Orsak, Sherry Schneider, and Melissa Barcuch.

Lodge 17, New Tabor elects 2018 officers

Dear Readers, Lodge 17, New Tabor held its monthly meeting on Sunday, November 5, 2017, at 2 p.m. The meeting was called to order by President Randy Gaas. Helen Hildebrand led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Secretary Betty Suehs read the minutes from the October meeting. They were approved as read. Treasurer Lillian Beasley gave her report.

Youth Leader Holly Narro reported that the youth club’s scarecrow exhibit received third place at the Burleson County Scare on the Square contest. She also reported on the That’s My Pan fundraiser and said that the beseda dancers will be dancing soon at the local nursing homes.

Hall Manager Susan Skrabanek gave her report. She reported that CSA Lodge 277, Svetlo made a very generous donation to the hall renovations.

Three transfer requests were approved. We would like to welcome Lillian Williams, Craig Homeyer, and Megan Homeyer to our lodge.

Under old business, our upcoming fundraiser was discussed. Ticket sales are going well, and we are anticipating a large crowd.

Lodge 18, Elgin celebrates Czech Heritage Month, welcomes new agents

What a great month of October! We had a great meeting with two new sales agents for Lodge 18, Elgin. We also had a guest, Fraternal Field Manager Philip McBee, who came to introduce new sales agents Jeanette Aviles and Henry Opara. Welcome to Lodge 18, Elgin. We look forward to working with you.

Those who didn’t attend the October meeting missed out on homemade kolaches and homemade chicken salad, brought by me. I also brought a handcrocheted christening dress, baby blanket, doll, handmade Christmas stockings, and other items.

We will elect officers in November, which is a good time to let us know how you feel about Lodge 18.

What a great dance with Larry Sodek and Central Texas Sounds. Larry is retiring. It was great to have the band one more time before Larry retires.

Kelly Knobloch and his children were at the dance. Kelly played his accordion and his daughter Ella sang. It’s always so good to see young people taking an interest in Czech music. When we are gone, someone must keep up the

Lodge 79 Corpus Christi celebrates Czech Heritage Month

SPJST Lodge 79, Corpus Christi celebrated Czech Heritage Month on Sunday, October 15 with a Czech meal.

Marcia Rew made the pork roast, and members brought Czech side dishes.

The meeting was called to order by President Mark Rebecek who also led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We had a moment of silence for deceased members Juan M. Lopez, Willis H. Coleman, Roman Avolos, and Victor Huff, Sr. All officers were present, and we had 30 members and guests in attendance.

Secretary Virginia Rebecek read the September minutes, and Treasurer Frank Sacky gave the September financial report. Both were approved.

Under communications, Secretary Virginia Rebecek read the three death claims.

FAC report was given by Vice President/FAC Jerry Sijansky. Jerry received a brochure about the fraternal updates.

In December, our lodge will elect officers for 2018. Anyone interested in running for office is encouraged to contact one of the officers. Jerry gave names of some famous people who were Czech.

Under new business, Judy Majek made a motion that our monthly donation go towards the Bokin Camp Children’s Center. Motion was approved.

President Rebecek introduced guests Jim and Louise Koutney of Lodge 202, Jourdanton.

Youth Leader Marcia Rew gave the youth report. They had seven members and guests in attendance. The youth made Halloween masks, and all received a goodie bag.

Youth guest Sarah Urbanovsky wore her kroj (Czech costume) and gave the history of her dress. She told about the meanings of each dress a Czech lady would wear.

Birthdays for October were Luke Rew on the 8th, Laura Rebecek on the 15th, Dallas Marek on the 24th, Larry Novosad on the 27th and Judy Majek on the 31st. “Happy Birthday” was sung to these members.

Twenty-five dollar door prizes were won by Stephen Rebecek and Christina Rew.

She encouraged everyone to consider bringing donations of recycled pet supplies for the youth’s November service project.

The October 2017 meeting of SPJST Lodge 142, Houston was held on Sunday, October 15, 2017. At 3 p.m., a prayer of thanks was given, and everyone enjoyed a delicious Czech meal of sausage, sauerkraut, and potatoes prepared by Jack and Catherine Manchack.

Financial Secretary/Treasurer Mary Ann Kieschnick gave the report, and it was approved.

Secretary Elizabeth Hermis read the September minutes, and they were approved as read.

Scenes from Lodge 48, Beyersville Progressive 42 Tournament It was another enjoyable day of dominoes for the 20 participants in the annual Lodge 48, Beyersville Progressive 42 Tournament.

First place went to John Wuensche with 12 wins/125 marks. Bobby Wuensche took second place with 12 wins/116 marks. Lydia Dowling took third place with 11 wins, and Zephyr Marek took fourth place with 10 wins/104 marks. Jesse Safarik also had 10 wins, but less marks - 90 marks - so he lost the tie breaker for fourth place.

Everyone had a great time and enjoyed a delicious noon meal of roast pork loin, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, corn, and sliced peaches prepared by Robert Leshikar. A big

Youth Leader Catherine Manchack, reported having 11 youth members and seven visitors at their September 17 youth club meeting. She reported the youth cut out greeting cards for St. Jude’s as a charity project. They also attended the fall family fun day on Saturday, September 23 at Lodge 196, Houston-West.

Sales Agent Kerry Herrington spoke on great sales for SPJST. Fraternal Activities Coordinator Pat Schleider gave a report, which included the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive.

Under new business, President Keith spoke on the scholarship programs for both Lodges 142 and 88. He encouraged everyone to explore options to increase the program.

District Five Youth Counselor Barbara Linney-Gonzalez spoke on all upcoming events, including the Halloween party on October 21; camp on June 27 to July 1, 2018; training for camp; District Five Youth Achievement Day on July 22, 2018; and the camp tee-shirt design contest. She stated the District Five Christmas Party is Saturday, December 2.

Birthdays for October were Walter Rosilier on the 11th; Embry Butera on the 17th; and Carol LaPaglia on the 30th.

Door prizes and capsule drawing were given, and the meeting adjourned.

Lodge 191, Lufkin sets November, December dances

This year will be gone before you know it. The older we get, the faster time goes. When you were young, time seemed to have gone by so slow that it took forever for Christmas to get here; it is a shame it does not go slow now.

SPJST Dance—November 17 Linda Kaye and the Kool Katz will be playing for the November SPJST dance.

If you have not heard them before, you need to make plans to be at the lodge on Friday, November 17 to dance to their music. They play all kinds of music including Cajun. Linda Kaye is a great singer and plays the keyboard. Please bring a covered dish or snack food for the food table. You will have a great time!

As usual, the dance starts at 7 p.m. and continues until 10 p.m. Admission is $6 for members and $8 for guests.

New Year’s Eve Dance—Dec. 31 Please make plans to be at the lodge for the New Year’s Eve dance. Tickets are $20 each and can be purchased at the door. This dance is from 8 p.m. to 12

The band for the New Year’s Eve dance will be Jarando, formerly Buffalo Nickel. The food table will be just like the rest of the dances where everyone brings a covered dish or snack food.

Christmas Dance—December 15 The Christmas SPJST dance will be Friday, December 15, and the band will be Glenn Lenderman and Friends.

Thanks to Glenn Lenderman and Friends for playing for the October dance. He and his band did an outstanding job as usual. Crickett sang, Chris Powell was on drums, and George Scogin played his saxophone the last half.

Mike and Joan Ferrigno volunteered to work the snack bar at that dance.

Thank both of you so much for volunteering. We appreciate you so very much!

All of the officers and everyone else who does anything at the SPJST lodge are all volunteers. This is how the lodge is able to have a dance once a month, but all of the officers now have done this for five years, and new people are needed.

Please keep in mind that new officers are elected in January for the year.

SPJST means in Czech “Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas.”

Some Czech words do not translate with the same initials in English so that is why some of them are different.

Beginning January 2018, a dress code will be enforced. If shorts are worn, they must be no shorter than the length of your finger tips with your arms down at your sides. No undershirts or halter tops, and no food or drinks on the dance floor.

Lodge 202 will donate $100 to ACCEPT to purchase food for families in need at Christmas. The lodge will also donate $100 to each Lodge 202 youth who places at the Atascosa County Livestock Show in January.

A ham lunch will be purchased from a restaurant for the Christmas party, and games will be played. The youth will provide desserts.

Polka Lovers Club of Texas Museum (PLCTM) will hold its 12th Annual Memorial Celebration and Open Haus on Saturday, November 18, 2017, at the Fair Pavilion in La Grange, Texas. Pub-

Lodge 80, Holland hosts Blackout Night Bingo with Treats

October 26, 2017, was exciting for everyone at SPJST Lodge 80, Holland bingo.

It was blackout night! All the games were blackout games, and special door prizes were given to some lucky winners. All those in attendance received tasty little treats . . . no tricks! Some “spooky” friends were celebrating with us.

We were also pleased to host our good friends from Will O’ Bell Nursing Center.

It was a great pre-Halloween event for all!

Lydia Faust’s Poppy Seed Kolaches

SPJST Lodge 9, Snook member Lydia Mae Faust shares her basic dough recipe and poppy seed filling. You can use other fillings: anything with cooked fruit, from dried prunes to peach butter (but no jelly), or cream cheese, for instance.

For the Dough 1 1/2 Tablespoons active dry yeast 1/2 cup warm water 1/3 cup sugar 1/2 cup shortening (Lydia Faust uses 1/4 cup margarine + 1/4 cup Crisco) 1 1/2 cups milk 6 cups all-purpose flour (sifted) 1 Tablespoon salt 1/2 can evaporated milk 2 whole eggs plus 1 egg yolk 6 to 8 Tablespoons melted butter (cooled)

Dissolve yeast with 1 teaspoon sugar in warm water.

In a mixing bowl, cream together remaining sugar and shortening. Add flour and add eggs 1 by 1. Add the salt and evaporated milk and mix in. Add the lukewarm milk and yeast mixture.

Using a dough hook on a pastry machine, slowly beat in 2 to 3 cups flour 1 cup at a time until the dough is smooth and elastic. If you work by hand, use a wooden spoon to fold in the flour and beat until smooth. Let sit for about 5 minutes, then beat again until dough is elastic and glossy.

Cover dough in bowl with a tea towel and let rise for 1 hour. When it has doubled in size after 1 hour, punch it down.

Cover bowl and let rise again for another 30 minutes.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Roll out the dough on a floured table to about 1 inch thick. Cut with a cookie

Lodge 88, Houston members participate in Czhilispiel Cookoff

Czhilispiel began in 1972 in Flatonia when the town celebrated its 100th anniversary. Lodge 88, Houston member Eugene Barcak began cooking on a chili team headed by Alfonse Jurica, Sr. in the mid-1970s. They called their team Zelená Žába or “Green Frog” Chili.

“My goal was to continue the tradition after we lost my dad in 2014,” says Margie Moncrief of Lodge 88, Houston.

“Dad’s team got close most every year, but never won a plaque in the 40 years of cooking chili.” Margie’s mom Geor-

gia Barcak, also of Lodge 88, is now the head cook. “Mom’s been a trooper staying out there all day with us even after having heart surgery just two months ago on September 8.”

The team won a 10th place plaque for 2017 Hometown Chili. Team members from Lodge 88, Houston are Georgia Barcak, daughter Margie, son-in-law Richard, grandson Sean, granddaughter Ashley Gorrell and husband Jarrod, and greatgranddaughter Kinsley Gorrell.

cutter, and place on a greased pan. Butter each roll and let rise for about 20 minutes.

Make a small indention in the middle of each roll and fill each with a little poppy seed filling. Let rise for about 15 minutes.

Bake for about 20 minutes or until light brown.

Poppy Seed Filling 1 1/2 cups ground poppy seeds 1 Tablespoon flour 1 cup sugar 1 cup milk

1 Tablespoon butter 1 pinch salt 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Heat the milk until it comes to a boil.

Mix the poppy seeds with sugar, flour and salt and add slowly to the milk mixture. Boil slowly over low heat, stirring constantly, until thick. Add more milk if the mixture is too stiff. Add butter and vanilla. Cool completely before using.

Jeb’s Critter Spotlight The Opossum — A face only a mother could love . . .

Hello, Everyone!

We have such a variety of different critters here at camp, and I’d like to help us all learn a little bit more about some of them - especially ones that have a bad reputation that maybe they don’t deserve.

Let’s talk about Jeb Lapeyrolerie the opossum today.

(Most people simply refer to them as a possum.) The opossum is the only marsupial in the United States. A marsupial is an order of mammals that give birth to partially developed babies who then crawl into a pouch, usually on the mother’s belly, to suckle and finish developing. A momma opossum can give birth to up to 20 babies at a time. Once the babies develop enough to leave the pouch you can often see them hitching a ride on their mom’s back. The babies that reach adulthood have a life span of only about two years in the wild. Part of the reason for this is due to their many predators like coyotes, dogs, and bobcats. (FYI a female opossum is a jill, a male is a jack, the babies are joeys, and a group of opossums is a passel.)

You have probably seen an opossum, no matter where you live. They are found in cities, suburbs, farms, and wilderness.

They can live so many different places because they can eat so many different things. They love to eat snails, mice, rats, crickets, ticks, rotting fruit that has fallen from trees, pet food that has been left out, and any other garbage or rotting stuff they can find. They are often called, “Nature’s little sanitation engineers.”

Myths and Misconceptions Now that we know some basics about the opossum, let’s talk about some of the myths and misconceptions that are out there about it.

A lot of people think that the opossum likes to hang from its tail from tree branches to sleep. The truth is that it does have a prehensile tail that allows it to hold on to things or help it climb. They could

use it to catch themselves if they were falling, but they would not choose to hang from it especially to sleep. They prefer to sleep in holes in the ground or other dark, protected areas. Their favorite places are burrows that other animals dug and have abandoned.

Everyone agrees that these little guys are not cute and cuddly, and that they can look really mean and aggressive. They will hiss and bare their teeth when cornered, but they are faking it. Their main form of defense is to play dead. They will drop down on their sides and lay there with their tongue hanging out to discourage the predator from eating them. They can stay like this for up to four hours! So if you run across a dead opossum, leave it alone for a while, it may jump up and run off. Also, remember they are a wild animal and can bite so be careful. (they have 50 teeth which is more than any other mammal in North America) Rabies is always a concern with mammals in North America, and the opossum doesn’t do itself any favors when it foams at the mouth when trying to scare off predators or when faking dead. In reality, the opossum is very resistant to the virus and virtually never contracts it. Also, a bonus for them is that they are extremely resistant to toxins. Even most snake venom doesn’t affect them.

Growing up, my grandfather always enlisted me to help him keep those darned possums out of his garden.

But, they were helping us more than we knew. Opossums don’t dig up gardens or yards. They like eating all the snails and other pests that like to destroy our gardens and plants and will clear them all out of its area before moving on to the next place.

Speaking of eating pests . . . did you know that opossums think ticks are a great treat? They will eat up somewhere around 5,000 each season!

So next time you see an opossum in your yard, don’t go after it with your broom. Let him finish eating whatever mess or pest he has found and protect him from your dog. Once he has finished cleaning up, he’ll move on to another area.

Expression of Sympathy

Lodge 202, Jourdanton members wish to express their heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of RoBERT ELToN FoSTER, age 85, of Pleasanton, who passed away Thursday, October 5, 2017.

He was born July 10, 1932, outside of Jourdanton on the family farm to Ollie and Ralph Foster. He went to school in Jourdanton and afterwards joined the Navy.

Robert then went to work for United Gas until an early retirement from Entex to take care of his parents. He Robert Foster then started his own business at that time while helping his brother Horace with working the farm and cattle operation. He drove every day to the farm until his health disabled him. His wife Patty continued taking Bob to the farm to check on the cattle and did so until the task was too much for her and him both.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 202, Jourdanton.

Robert is survived by wife Patty; children Miles Foster and wife Lupe of Poteet, Sandra Porter and husband Trey of Leming, Eric Foster and wife Christy of Pleasanton, and Lee Foster and wife Marty of Castroville; grandchildren Paul, Bryce, Erin, Randall, Phillip, Ashley, Bryan, Allyson, and Kyle; and great-grandchildren Carson, Blake, Hunter, Mason, Ashley, Layla, Allyson, Milee, Wyatt, Lanie, Dante, Katie, and Royce.

Visitation was at Hurley Funeral Home in Pleasanton on Monday, October 9 from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral service was at Hurley Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 10 at 10 a.m. Interment followed at Pleasanton City Cemetery.

Pallbearers for Robert’s service were Paul Wilkins, Randall Foster, Ashley Castro, Gilbert Castro, Phillip Foster, and Bryan Foster. Honorary pallbearers were Bryce Wilkins and Robert Foster.

In Memory of Betty Blaha

Betty Lou Blaha, age 80, of Jarrell passed away Friday, November 3, 2017, at her home in Jarrell. She was born on December 6, 1936, in Pflugerville, the daughter of Anton and Amelia Pokorny.

On August 12, 1956, at Taylor Brethren Church, she married Raymond Blaha.

Betty Lou worked for 35 years with National Western Life Insurance Company retiring as the assistant to the president in 1998. She loved gardening and baking, made some of the best fried chicken, was well Betty Blaha known for her turkey and dressing, and one couldn’t beat her potato salad. But dearest to her was spoiling her grandchildren.

She was a member of SPJST Lodge 20, Granger.

She is survived by daughters Pam Bartek and husband Mark of Zabcikville and Cheryl Blaha Arldt of Temple; grandchildren Paige Bartek Melton and husband Hunter of Victoria, Taylor Bartek of Lubbock, Brodie Arldt of College Station, and Kassidy Arldt of Temple; sisters Evelyn Gebala of Temple, Emily Saathoff and husband Harley of Pflugerville, and Irene King and husband CJ of Pflugerville; brother-in-law Richard Delancy of Taylor; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.

Betty Lou was preceded in death by husband Raymond; parents Anton and Amelia; sister Antoinette Delancy; and brother-in-law Bernie Gebala.

Visitation was Monday, November 6 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home in Temple.

A funeral service was Tuesday, November 7 at 10 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Temple followed by burial at Seaton Brethren Cemetery.

Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Leader Holly Narro reports that her youth members made Christmas cards for a nineyear-old boy who was diagnosed with cancer and is asking for people around the world to send him cards early so he can celebrate Christmas one final time.

Dear Members, This summer at SPJST Camps, the Blob received a non-repairable tear.

The Blob is one of the most loved activities offered at camp. This air-filled “pillow” allows an individual to jump on from a platform above and crawl to the end. Once in place, a second individual jumps onto the Blob and shoots the first person in the air, who lands safely in the water below.

The cost to replace The Blob is $4,400. SPJST has 33 active youth clubs, and if each youth club was to donate $150, we would be able to purchase a new Blob and pay for the

shipping cost. This amount of money could easily be raised with a bake sale or some other small fundraiser. Please consider getting your youth together to plan a fundraiser to make a donation towards the purchase of a new Blob. So far, we have received some very generous donations from District Six adults, District Six youth, and District Seven adults that equals a whopping $1,000! Thank you to the members of each of these districts for their continuous support of the camp and youth.

Like any child would, Thompson loves gifts and cards from his family and friends. But this Christmas, he’s asking for people across the globe to join him in celebrating early. He wants as many homemade Christmas cards sent to his hospital room as possible.

Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club gives to Disabled American Veterans’ Van Fund

SPJST Lodge 30, Taiton held its meeting on Sunday, November 5, 2017, at 2:15 pm at Taiton Community Center.

The meeting was called to order by President Luc Marcaurele. Simone Riha led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Lisa Bubela led the club in the SPJST Motto and prayer.

Faith Korenek called roll with 13 members and two guests, Hudson and Vanessa Riha, present. The treasurer’s report was given by Bethany Baker.

There were no minutes from October’s meeting to be read.

Under old business, we will collect at the January 2018 meeting for the 100

2018 Events The 2018 events discussed were: • LIT Camp will be June 15 to 17.

• Districts Two/Six Camp will be June 20 to 24. If you are not able to attend camp at that time, you may opt to go on another weekend.

Lisa Bubela gave the youth leader’s report. Lisa informed everyone that Lynette Talasek (SPJST State Youth Director) has taken a new position. Everyone is to either write her a note or a card about how she has impacted your life.

Ms. Lisa will be getting her a gift also.

This will be given to her as a farewell gift from the youth at the December meeting.

Czech Fun at Westfest, Heritage Day

Dear Vestnik Readers, As you know, I have made many appearances as State Queen. My adventure began at Westfest, and I recently attended the Czech Heritage Day celebration.

At Westfest, Austen and I, Madison, and Maison rode in the parade and tossed candy out to little kids. My heart was so full as I heard children exclaiming, “Look at the princess!

She’s so pretty!” While they were too young to understand what SPJST State Queen is all about, it was such a great feeling to have so many children looking up to me.

Following the parade, Austen and I were introduced in two different pavilions, and we danced the day away. We were accompanied by our SPJST family, plenty of sweat, and great Czech food.

Following Westfest, yet again, I was dancing the day away at Czech Heritage Day at Sokol Dallas. I was

Instead of wearing traditional royalty attire, Austen and I agreed to wear our kroj to show our pride for Czech heritage. Not only did I enrich my own journey of SPJST State Queen, I enriched my own knowledge of my heritage. I had the opportunity to learn so many new facts about where I came from, and I grew an even larger appreciation of my roots.

My journey as SPJST State Queen has so far been everything I’ve always dreamed of and more. I am excited to make many more memories and inspire those around me. I cannot wait for my next appearance as SPJST State Queen, and I hope to see you there!

Schůze CEFT a oslava Hlavinkova stipendia na TAMU v College Station, TX se vydařily

Pravidelná čtvrtletní schůze České vzdělávací nadace státu Texasu se konala dne 21. října 2017 v pěkně postavené budově rekreačního střediska Texaské Zemědělské a mechanické uni versity v College Station, Tx. za poměrně příjemného počasí s dostatečným slunečním svitem, který ozařoval místnosti střediska a zahříval naše těla. Jak obyčejně se hodně chladilo v místnostech, tak že procházka po terase vždy zpříjemnila pobyt v centru.

Schůze naší nadace byla následována oslavou 18. výročí Havinkova stipendia na universitě a proto jsme začali naši schůzi včas a pokračovali jsme poměrně rychlým tempem při vyřizování jednotlivých bodů pořadu. Rodina Hlavinkova uspořádala oslavu i oběd pro všechny účastníky oslavy.

Zápis z minulé schůze byl čten a schválen tak, jak byl čten. Lynette Urbanovsky jako anglicky píšící dopisovatelka podala zprávu o postupu práce na dalším vydání oběžníku a bylo rovněž zřejmé, že věnovala hodně času a námahy na uspořádání oslavy stipendia a všech stolů. Všechno bylo připraveno a my, kteří jsme přijeli o něco dříve, jsme jen pomohli se stoly a květinami. Součástí výzdoby byl i podzimní ráz označený jablky a slívami. Sál byl zaplněn do posledního místečka. Ostatní ředitelé také uznali, že se její práce podařila a Lynette vytvořila příjemné prostředí pro účastníky pozdější oslavy.

Udělala kus pořádné práce s pomocí studentů TAMU. Woody Smith oznámil, že se mu podařilo opravit počítač a nyní je schopen využít této před nosti při přijímání a odesílání zpráv ředitelům nadace.

Ředitel Jay Lenárt upozornil na činnost University Severního Texasu a umělci chystají představení Rybovy vánoční mše v Praze ve státě Texasu v předvánočním období dne 3. prosince 2017..

V tomto představení budou umělci oblečeni v dobových oděvech z 18. století. Rovněž se chystají dvě opery, takže se máme na co těšit při uměleckém zážitku.

Diane Šulák Wilson oznámila, že pomáhá při uspořádání blízkých voleb nových úředníků a ředitelů.. Rovněž poděkovala 55 ředitelům a členům, kteří přispěli na tichou aukci, která byla velmi úspěšná, protože se nabízely velmi hodnotné knihy, keramika, dřevěné vyřezávané předměty a lihoviny. Dále pokračuje při dělání pořádku v seznamech členů, abychom byli na výši i v tomto ohledu.

Předseda Sboru ředitelů Clinton Machánn upozornil, že očekáváme od slavnosti podstatný finanční příspěvek, protože dosavadní čísla jsou dosud nezměněna k lepšímu, avšak úsilím naší nadace by měla být zvýšena částka pro podporu Hlavinkova stipendia na TAMU, aby moravští studenti z Brna nebo Olomouce měi zabezpečené

studium na universitě. Ředitel James Sassín oznámil, že uspořádali festival polských filmů v kině Les Cinema. na začátku listopadu 2017 a hodlají přivítat tvůrkyni jednoho z flmů v Austině, TX. Oba režiséři studovali Filmovou akademii músických umění v Praze a doposud jsou ve spolupráci mezi polskými a českými tvůrci. Ředitel a česky příšící dopisovatel Jan Vaculík sdělil, že se jeho zdraví i nadále zlepšuje a jen občas má nějaké tělesné potíže, o kterých se obyčejně lékaři zmiňují jako o přirozených následcích chemoterapie. Osobně mám dobrý dojem z chemikálií, které přijímám kaž dých 14 dnů po tři hodiny a pak ještě na doma mám 100 mililitrů léku do pátku, kdy pumpičku odevzdáme v institutu. Přiznávám, že se těším už na konečnou dávku těch všelijakých léků.

President nadace Woody Smith pak oznámil, že příští schůze dne 20. ledna 2018 bude volební jako vždycky a žádáme proto, aby naše veřejnost přišla na tuto schůzi do místnosti ředitelny Slovanské podporující jednoty státu Texasu v Temple, TX., abychom mohli rozumně naplánovat další činnost naší nadace. Každá schůze s volbami je důležitá, protože se může stát, že úplně noví úředníci mohou být zvoleni třeba i ve prospěch nadace.

Oslava 18. výročí Hlavinkova stipedia na TAMU v College Station, TX. začala velmi přesně v jednu hodinu odpoledne krátkým přivítáním Drem.

modlitbou kazatele Rev. Marka Labaje, ředitele CEFT. Pak následoval oběd a české jídlo, které bylo složeno z bramborových noků a pělného kusu masa a nápoje se mohl každý vybrat podle libosti.

Po obědě promluvil čestný konsul Čechie and náš řediel Brian Vaníček a pak byl představen hlavní řečník kancléř John Sharp, který zavpomínal na jeho dětství a zážitky s příbuznými z matčiny strany, kteří jsou našeho původu. Hodně mluvil o jeho oblíbené universitě a hlavně popsal práci, které se nyní věnuje. Pak promluvil zaslužilý profesor a bývalý president Katedry angličtiny na universitě D. J. Lawrence Mitchel.l.

Pak promluvila bývalá uživatelka Hlavinkova stipendia Hana Waisarová a promluvil také současný poživatel Hlavinkova stipendia Jan Beneš.

Zvláštní proslov měly dvě bývalé soutěžící o československou královnu v Americe ve Wilber , NE. Sarah (bývalá Middlebrook) Armor a Jana ( bývalá Vaculík) Riley. Obě zdůraznily důležitost činnosti pro náš národ v Texasu a

Pak následovala příjemná hudba Kovandovy rodiny s hostujícím zpěvákem Michaelem Morrisem.Kapela hrála více k poslechu než k vířivému tanci, protože věk a tělesná schopnost mnohých účastníků oslavy nepovolila mnohým oslavujícím lidem poskočení v tanci, i když s mnohými známé melodie hýbaly tělem.
