SPJST Memories SPJST Memories Editor’s Note: Special thanks to Georgia Pavlica of Lodge 47, Seaton for sharing these special SPJST memories with us. Georgia is a 67-year member and celebrated her 85th birthday in 2020. Here is a little story about my involvement with SPJST, which is minimal at best, but fun! My first encounter with SPJST was when I was just a toddler. My mom was a widow with nine kids. She worked hard during the week, but on Saturday nights, we got dressed and went to the SPJST hall. Mom would sit on the bench - remember the benches against the wall? No? Too young? And she watched us dance the night away with all of the other little kids there. When the little kids got tired and sleepy, they would lay on a quilt “under the bench” or in a cloak room. That was in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Then in early 1950, Walter Jakubec, who was an agent at the time, came to our house, and mom had me enrolled in SPJST. Soon after, Mr. Jakubec encouraged me to join the beseda dance group. That was a fun time. We went to different lodges to dance like the kids do now. We were a very large group. There
were married couples and some older people dancing as well as the young ones. Then in the late 1960s and early 1970s, I became an assistant youth leader with Adeline Kohutek. My daughter Susan and son Gary were in the youth club at the time. I loved working with Adeline and the kids, helping with projects, the Christmas programs, socials, chaperoning, and camping. I made many friends from the other districts. My husband John and I had our wedding reception and dance at Star Hall. After that – again Saturday nights were spent dancing at some SPJST halls in the area. I am a member of Lodge 47, Seaton, and John was a member of Lodge 24, Cyclone. Also on the wall at Lodge 24, Cyclone is a picture of Mr. Anton Sodek, Sr. I think he was the first president of Lodge 24. He was my grandfather from my mom’s side of the family. I have enjoyed being a member of SPJST and being involved with all the wonderful people in SPJST. I also loved the Coronabusters story in the Vestnik. East Bell County people just know how to have fun! —Georgia Pavlica Lodge 47, Seaton —SPJST—
