HAPPY 100TH BIRTHDAY, WELDON GALLER! Lodge 66, Waco member and World War II Veteran Weldon Galler celebrated his 100th birthday on Sunday, July 19, 2020, with a drive-by parade on MacArthur Street in Waco. Neighbors, friends, family, car clubs, and community members drove by and honked and waved as Brother Galler and his family observed from the front yard. More pictures on page 11. Congratulations and best wishes to Weldon on his 100th birthday!

Sadly, Brother Galler passed away on July 23.

CAMP KUBENA IS OPEN! District Six Youth Counselor Lisa Bubela of Lodge 30, Taiton throws an axe as Camp Kubena Executive Director Rob Clift looks on at Camp Kubena, located at 2001 Waldeck Road in Ledbetter, during a recent Family Adventure Day. The program continues through August 16 and is open on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Activities include BB, archery, axe throwing, high ropes and zip line, exclusive pool and pavilion time for group of six, and free time including games, hiking, disk golf, or relaxing in the air conditioned dining hall. e plan to include the district and state SPJST Youth Showcase winners in the next Vestnik. A total of 434 entries were received for this virtual contest that pivoted from the annual District and State Youth Achievement Days which have been held across the state since the 1960s. State Fraternal Director Frank and Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy along with the District Youth Counselors are grateful for each youth participant and every entry.

Our youth are extremely talented, and we are overjoyed to share the entries with you. Tune in to our social media pages (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) this week to find the link where you can view the district contests. We will present photos of all constructed items, photography, and pictorial arts and videos of the individual talent entries and royalty speeches. I know you will be impressed!

Reality Check: The time for life insurance is now.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a reality check and sparked open conversations about end-of-life and future emergency plans, according to a new study by Life Happens.

That’s why we will be kicking off Life Insurance Awareness Month (LIAM) in August. We’re still celebrating LIAM in September, but by joining LIAM now, we are able to reach out to members and prospective members at a time when the spotlight is on life insurance.

This year’s LIAM is centered around the theme “Reality Check: The time for

life insurance is now.” This theme emphasizes the fact that life changes quickly and priorities shift. Life insurance can help protect loved ones financially—now and for the future.

Brooke Shields returns as LIAM spokesperson emphasizing that the time for life insurance is now. Stay tuned to SPJST’s social media for videos and important messages from Brooke.

Good Eats

Vanilla Wafer Pineapple Dessert

Place 1 1/2 cups of the vanilla wafer crumbs in the bottom of a 9-by-9-inch square pan. Set aside.

In a large bowl, combine vanilla pudding mix and cold milk. Whisk until thickened, about 2 minutes. Add the drained pineapple and chopped nuts. Stir to combine.

Spread mixture over wafer crumbs in the pan. Spread the whipped topping over pineapple mixture. Place remaining 1/2 cup of wafer crumbs on top. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours.

FROM THE SUPREME LODGE July 8, 2020 Minutes of the Regular Meeting of SPJST Supreme Lodge held via online video conference PRESIDING The meeting was called to order by Supreme Lodge Chairman Karen Kaspar on Wednesday, July 8, 2020, at 9:06 a.m.

OPENING OF MEETING The meeting was opened by Supreme Lodge Chairman Kaspar with a welcome to the online video conference as we continue with the COVID-19 situation. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and a moment of silence was observed in respect to our departed members and in honor of our government officials, military troops, law enforcement, firemen, EMS, healthcare workers, and others affected by COVID-19, especially our members who have been affected. Chief Financial Officer Mikeska led the Supreme Lodge in an opening prayer.

ANNOUNCEMENTS President Vanicek announced there will be four visitors present on the video conference. The visitors are Diana Ward with JRBT to report on the external audit, Larry White and Stephen Gonzalez of AQS Asset Management to report on investments, and Rob Clift, executive director of Camp Kubena to report on the camp. Sandra Hoggard of Lodge 202, Jourdanton will join to observe the meeting.

APPROVAL OF SUPREME LODGE MINUTES After review of the April 21, 2020, regular meeting, Director Stavinoha moved that the minutes be approved as printed. Director Pospisil seconded the motion, and the motion carried unanimously.

After review of the May 1, 2020, special called meeting, Director Bayer moved the minutes be approved as printed. President Vanicek seconded the motion, and the motion carried unanimously.

After review of the March 18, 2020, special called meeting, President Vanicek moved the minutes be approved as printed. Director Bayer seconded the motion, and the motion carried unanimously.

VĚSTNÍK After review of the March 28, 2020, special called meeting, President Vanicek moved the minutes be approved as printed. Director Stavinoha seconded the motion, and the motion carried unanimously.

APPROVAL OF OFFICERS’ MEETING MINUTES After review of the three meetings on May 7, June 4, and June 22, Director Pospisil moved the minutes be approved as printed. Vice President Dixon seconded the motion, and the motion carried unanimously.

EXECUTIVE SESSION The meeting went into executive session from 9:23 until 9:47 a.m. to consider executive matters.

MANAGEMENT TEAM MEETING NOTES The management team meeting notes were reviewed and acknowledged on motion by Director Bayer, seconded

by Director Stavinoha, and the motion carried unanimously.

OLD BUSINESS President Vanicek asked for a motion to accept two reports as presented: Director Bayer moved that we accept the reports as presented by State Fraternal Director Horak and Human Resource Administrator Talasek, seconded by Director Pospisil. The motion carried unanimously.

Recess for break was taken from 10:23 to 10:30 a.m.

NEW BUSINESS The Investment Policy Statement (IPS) was reviewed

by Larry White and Stephen Gonzalez of AQS. The following motions were adopted for the IPS: Chief Financial Officer Mikeska moved that we change the amount invested in municipal bonds per state level from 20 percent to 5 percent of assets instead of surplus.

The motion was seconded by Director Victorick, and the motion carried unanimously.

Controller Vajdak moved that we change the amount invested in Private Placement non-144a bonds to from 20 percent to 5 percent of invested assets and change the amount invested in SEC Rule 144a bonds from 100 percent to 50 percent of invested assets. The motion was seconded by Director Pospisil, and the motion carried with eight in favor and three opposed. Voting in favor: Vice President Dixon, Chief Financial Mikeska, Controller Vajdak, Director Pospisil, Director Davis, Director Engelke, Director Stavinoha, and Director Kaspar.

Voting in opposition: President Vanicek, Director Victorick, and Director Bayer.

President Vanicek moved that we release no more than $6,843.17 to Round Top Builders and move forward with the upgrade proposal of Camp Kubena. Director Victorick seconded the motion, and the motion passed with 10 in favor and one in opposition. Voting in favor: President Vanicek, Vice President Dixon, Chief Financial Mikeska, Controller Vajdak, Director Victorick, Director Pospisil, Director Engelke, Director Bayer, Director Kaspar, and Director Bayer. Voting in opposition: Director Stavinoha.

President Vanicek brought up for discussion the list of recommendations from the Finance Committee. The recommendation to reduce overall spending by 20 percent, starting when this recommendation is passed and ending one year later, was reviewed and voted on.

Chief Financial Officer Mikeska moved to postpose the 20 percent reduction until the BKD efficiency study is complete and results are provided to the Supreme Lodge. At that time, the Supreme Lodge can determine what is feasible. Director Bayer seconded the motion, and the motion carried unanimously.

CONVENTION Chief Financial Officer Mikeska moved the Supreme Lodge conduct a ballot in lieu of SPJST’s 33rd Convention in order to accept the Credential Committee’s certification of all delegates. The letter will be mailed to all delegates on August 14, 2020, and must be returned by September 15, 2020. The ballot will also include the election of SPJST President, Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, Editor/Director of Communication, seven district director, and standing committee members along with a vote to close the ballot in lieu convention until August 2021. President Vanicek seconded the motion, and the motion carried unanimously.

Director Victorick moved to have Henry Jezek, CPA to conduct the official tabulating to ensure secrecy of the vote. The motion was seconded by Director Bayer, and the motion carried unanimously.

Chief Financial Officer Mikeska reported on investment purchase and sells and moved to ratify as presented. Director Pospisil seconded the motion, and the motion carried unanimously.

Rob Clift, executive director of Camp Kubena, presented a recommendation from the Camp Kubena Advisory Committee to accept a bid from Round Top Builders. The proposal is to draw up plans for the conversion of the maintenance barn into a facility to provide staff housing, an office, and a break area.

Chief Financial Officer Mikeska moved approval of the rates on annuities. On existing annuities, the rate will increase from 2.80 percent payout rate to 3.0 percent, and new money annuities payout will increase from 3.0 percent to 3.25 percent. The new one-year annuity will have a payout rate of 1.25 percent, and the new two-year an-

VĚSTNÍK nuity will have a payout rate of 1.75 percent. The minor claims payout rate remained the same at 2.50 percent.

Director Victorick seconded the motion, and the motion carried unanimously. The rates will be effective August 1, 2020, through October 31, 2020.

Chief Financial Officer Mikeska moved approval of the recommended rates on universal life as presented in his report. Controller Vajdak seconded the motion, and the motion carried unanimously. The rates remain the same from the last quarter.

Chief Financial Officer moved approval of an updated resolution naming and authorizing the Supreme Lodge officers to sign formal documents of purchase, sale, or assignment and documents related to other corporate and bank business. Director Stavinoha seconded the motion, and the motion carried unanimously.

CONVENTION Controller Vajdak moved the ballot in lieu of the 33rd SPJST Convention must be returned and in the office of Henry Jezek, CPA by 5 p.m. on September 15, 2020, in order to be counted. The motion was seconded by Director Victorick, and the motion carried unanimously.

Director Pospisil moved the newly elected Supreme Lodge will be in place by October 1, 2020, which would provide a full quarter to conduct business. Director Bayer seconded the motion, and the motion carried unanimously.

EXECUTIVE MINUTES The meeting went into executive session from 4:19 until 5:07 p.m. to consider approval of executive minutes.

CONVENTION Controller Vajdak moved that all candidates may seek office on the basis of guidelines that were in place on January 1, 2020. Director Victorick seconded the motion, and the motion carried unanimously.

ADJOURNMENT There being no further business, Director Davis moved for adjournment. Director Bayer seconded, and the motion to adjourn carried unanimously.

Commentary Thanks to everyone for another successful virtual Supreme Lodge meeting. We accomplished a great number of things, and I look forward to the days ahead.

I am very pleased with the progress made by AQS Financial Advisors in regards to our investment portfolio.

However, we must be diligent in what we do to control expenses, and we must do all we can to make sure our year-end numbers are as close to being balanced as possible. We will experience a loss, but let’s reduce it to the lowest amount we can.

I am looking forward to the results of the efficiency study being conducted by BKD, and I emphasize that we need to adhere to recommendations coming from the study. We cannot ignore any portion of their recommendations even if it requires making tough decisions. This is what we are here for, and we must make sure all of our decisions are in the best interest of SPJST. Thanks to everyone for making this a very positive and upbeat meeting with a lot of good things to look forward to. Our organization has a lot of positives and

Commentary I am so excited for the future of SPJST. Our book yield is up. We will have three new members on the Supreme Lodge in October. I look forward to working with our new colleagues.

President Vanicek’s meetings with the delegates have been well attended. District Five continues to lead the way in sales.

Our two retiring Supreme Lodge members will be a great loss, and they will be sorely missed. District Seven Director Bob Bayer has five decades of SPJST experience and history that the Supreme Lodge benefited from.

His many years of service to this organization is admi-

District Six will be losing a great leader. Bob has dedicated his life to SPJST. He has missed so many events and family events while filling his duties as a board of director, but I am sure that he will tell you that SPJST is his family. Bob has been a great mentor and was always ready to give advice. I am not sure how we will get our pecan brittle. Bob worked tirelessly on SPJST, trying to make the organization better. His famous quote, “What’s next?” will always resonate with me. I am so disappointed not to be able to be around him for the last two board meetings and not be able to see him for the past six months. Bob was a great asset to the board. An end of an era will now pass with Bob’s retirement.

District Six Director Karen Kasper has also spent many years with SPJST. She was a youth member, local lodge officer, sales agent, area sales manager, and district director. District Six was wise in electing her to represent them. She is known in Wharton County as “Miss SPJST.” Karen was able to bring her insurance sales expertise to the board. Karen is one of the most passionate persons I know for SPJST. She is also the hardest worker I know. Karen is always go - go - go. It was great to get to know her so much better on a personal level with our road trips to Temple and many after-meeting meals. I know what food she will order every time, what kind of beer she likes, what her kids are up to, and if her grandkids won the softball game! Without the demands of serving as an SPJST director, I know she will enjoy her time in New Taiton more now with her grandkids, church, fishing, and be able to care for her aging parent better.

Vice President Hiram Dixon has improved our Insurance Department tenfold. His fresh perspectives on sales and marketing brought great improvements to SPJST. I will miss his LSU updates. I am sure LSU winning the national championship had a lot to do with his retiring!

His boudin expertise and energy shall be missed.

Commentary The SPJST Supreme Lodge has moved forward through these last few months engaging in virtual technology which has enhanced our business consistently through conference calls, Zoom meetings, and Go To Meetings. It is also exciting to hear about the virtual SPJST Youth Showcase with the Youth and Communication Departments working together to make this happen since the annual Youth Achievement Day (YADs) cannot take place this summer.

Thank you both for your mentorship! Thank you to all officers and directors for your individual part that you have had for me through the years. I am extremely appreciative for the opportunities and accomplishments I have been able to share through SPJST. District Seven Director Bob Bayer Activities Attended Supreme Lodge teleconferences/meetings throughout the quarter.

Commentary In a way, this has been a busy quarter for me and SPJST with the COVID-19 happenings in District Seven and across Texas. This is very seriously getting out of control. I believe that the opening of Texas was a little premature. It gave our younger generation an out to let loose, have parties, go to bars, etc. In my opinion, the protests didn’t help out in regard to COVID-19. The wearing of masks and social distancing has helped some, but could be better. SPJST is a true family organization. Our members love to talk and hug each other. Now, it is worse than ever. I think that the people relaxed too much when the state was opened.

I have tried to contact the lodges in District Seven in reference to our Convention. Here are my findings: 1. Most lodges agree that most of our delegates are senior members. They do not really care to get out at this time.

They are asking if we can possibly postpone the convention. Please take care of us and don’t make us go to a convention now. Life is more important than a convention. Why should we jeopardize our lives. My family comes first!

At the last convention in 2016, the average age for delegates was 64. There were 119 delegates over age 65. Four

lodges in District Seven said to postpone the convention for now. One lodge might not attend. I could not get ahold of one lodge, and one delegate said he filled out the mail poll. Cancellation of the convention is a must at this time. I will back a postponement of the convention now. I would rather play safe now than have problems later from COVID19.

Some comments of delegates are: 1. Will not travel that far for a convention during the COVID-19 crisis.

2. It is attacking senior citizens mostly.

3. Have health problems.

4. Took vacation in June for the convention; cannot set up again for later.

5. Job has reopened and can’t get off.

6. Not leaving home at this time.

7. Think about our senior members.

8. Officers and directors can make some of the changes till the convention.

9. Why not elect our officers and directors by mail poll now. Let the committees stay in office for now.

10. Do not care to spend nights away from home at this time.

We have 209 delegates signed up for the 33rd Convention. A total of 134 delegates responded to the survey that was sent out. Of those, 47 percent said to reschedule the convention, 30 percent said to do elections now, and 21 percent said to proceed with the convention.

At our last teleconference Supreme Lodge meeting on July 8, a motion was made to have the 33rd Convention in August 2021. At this time, it is set to be at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center. I think that this was a very good decisions by the board. I think that this is in the best interest of SPJST. Many decisions were made in this meeting. Please, be sure to read your Vestnik. It will have a lot of information.

Delegate webinars set pace for future online gatherings Dear Brothers and Sisters, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: The silver lining of this current and cautious environment is that it helped to accelerate SPJST’s embrace of the digital workplace and provided management with a motivational kick to break from the past and think about how to do things differently. That includes the way we communicate.

Case in point: Last Wednesday, July 15 at 7 p.m., we hosted our second webinar for delegates to the 33rd SPJST Convention. The first webinar took place two weeks prior on Wednesday, July 1. Both online events were well-attended and provided us with the opportunity to get a lot of information across in a relatively short space of time and have the added benefit of being able to ask questions live to the presenters, including the two candidates vying for the role of Supreme Lodge Vice President. A third delegates’ webinar has

been scheduled for Wednesday, August 12. This coincides with the day that ballots are scheduled to be mailed from the SPJST Home Office. Delegates will be receiving email invitations to sign up for the webinar in about a week.

Once we get past the convention election process, I envision these periodic webinars being open to the general membership, providing us with the opportunity to address a kaleidoscope of SPJSTrelated topics. Imagine the possibilities!

We’ll do our best to keep you posted through the Vestnik and online of these informational events as they unfold. For the remainder of this week’s column, I will summarize the information conveyed in the July 15 webinar.

2020 Convention Elections SPJST Convention elections are going to be held by mail poll next month. That was decided by the Supreme Lodge just

prior to the first webinar on July 1. Those ballots will be mailed to delegates from the SPJST Home Office on Wednesday, August 12.

The balance of Convention related items — including recommendations by the By-Law and other standing committees — will take place August 13 to 15, 2021, at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center. And, just in case you’re ready to make your reservations, please know that those convention-rate rooms probably won’t be enabled until about the middle of August. It is my understanding that we have to wait until we’re a year out from the convention to start blocking the rooms.

The first item on your ballot will be a recommendation from the Credentials Committee to approve the list of delegates to the 33rd SPJST Convention.

Following our webinar on July 1, I designated three delegates to serve on the Credentials Committee. They are Sister Susan Skrabanek of Lodge 17, New Tabor in District One; Sister Rita Spinn of Lodge 80, Holland in District Two; and Brother Michael Galler of Lodge 66, Waco in District Three. The Committee met at the SPJST Home Office on Tuesday, July 7 at which time they reviewed each of the delegates qualifications and approved them for final approval.

The first item on the ballot — which delegates will be receiving by mail — will be the recommendation of the Credentials Committee that seeks approval of the list of delegates that will accompany your ballot package.

This will require a simple yes or no vote from the delegate before proceeding to the election of Supreme Lodge officers – namely the President, Vice President, and Chief Financial Officer as well as the Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication.

The only position there that is contested is that of Supreme Lodge Vice President. There, the delegates will be selecting from one of the two candidates.

Regarding district elections, delegates will be voting to fill the positions of district director and standing committee members.

District Seven has three candidates vying for the position of district director.

As such, it will be necessary for the winning candidate to emerge with a simple majority of the total votes cast by the district. In the event that there is a run-off, we are confident that a subsequent run-off election could be held in time to enable the winning candidate to be seated for the October Supreme Lodge meeting.

Members seeking to have their name included on the ballot for one of the standing committees were required to send in their request by email to Melanie on or before Friday, July 24, 2020. This notice was previously posted in the Vestnik.

There will not be elections for alternate district directors and/or alternate standing committee members. Any vacancies that may emerge between the time of our elections and the 34th Convention are to be filled by the district.

Delegates will have approximately four weeks to cast their ballots which must be returned in the return envelope to the accounting firm that will conduct the tabulation. It will be necessary for the ballots to be in the office of the accounting firm no later than 5 p.m. September 15, 2020.

If You Meet, Play It Safe SPJST lodges are excused from any requirements to adhere to their established regular meeting schedule throughout the month of August. The Supreme Lodge requests that — if you do schedule a meeting — that you do so in a way that corresponds with the State of Texas guidelines for social distancing and safety.

The Supreme Lodge cares about the safety and sensibilities of its members and wants to keep them out of harm’s way.

The Supreme Lodge will be deciding on a month-to-month basis on when it would again become expected for lodges to return to their regular meeting schedules. I anticipate our decision on the month of September will be made on or about August 21.

Even as lodges are exempted from their routine meeting schedules, they are still encouraged to stay in touch with their active members by telephone as well as experiment with and/or incorporate online teleconferencing as a way to stay connected.

Several lodges and youth clubs have taken advantage of meeting online. The spjst.org website includes some basic information that will enable you to get started.

From the SPJST State Fraternal Director State Fraternal Director shares August updates 2020 SPJST Youth Showcase I am happy to report that district judging started Monday, July 13, 2020, and was completed Friday, July 24. Results will be posted no later than Friday, July 31. I have sent emails to participants, their parents, and posted information on social media.

State craft and individual talent judging started Monday, July 27 and will be complete on Friday, July 31. State Royalty competition will take place via video conference scheduled for Saturday, August 1 beginning at 2 p.m. The competition will be recorded so members will be able to watch our youth compete for the titles of 2020-2021 SPJST State King and Queen at a later date. Please look at SPJST’s Facebook and Instagram pages for information on when you will be able to view the district and state winners.

Camp Kubena Family Adventure Days Registration for Family Adventure Days is open! Camp Kubena will be hosting eight groups of six people each day. Camp Kubena Executive Camp Director Rob Clift has designed a day program that incorporates a ton of fun elements of camp while practicing safe social gathering.

2021 State Tournaments SPJST state tournaments have not yet been scheduled for 2021. If they are scheduled, they will be held at the Home Office in Temple, Texas. These tournaments include Progressive 42 Domino, Tarok, Straight Domino, and 42 Domino. In 2020, attendance was up and continuing to grow. We will share information about state tournaments in the coming months. Please check the Vestnik for updates.

Texas Czech Festivals Both Westfest and Kolache Festival have been canceled for 2020. They had both been previously scheduled for September.

The youth club held its meeting at the park. They installed officers.

Under old business, there was no news on the insulation, and Kolache Festival has been cancelled for this year.

Lodge 47, Seaton readies for August 9 fashion bingo Our first Lodge 47, Seaton Fashion Bingo will be Sunday, August 9, 2020, from 2 to 5:30 p.m. Game prizes will be designer purses and other designer items. Doors will open at 1:15 p.m.

Tickets are $40 in advance and $50 at the door, if available, or $240 for a reserved table of six.

Tickets includes 10 game tickets, bingo dauber, snacks, and drinks. The event benefits the youth scholarship fund and Star Hall.

Lodge 84, Dallas delegates participate in convention webinars Dear Readers, Members of Lodge 84, Dallas continue to practice safe social distancing throughout this COVD-19 quarantine.

Unfortunately, that means that we still are unable to meet for our monthly meetings and fellowship activities. But on the other hand, our lodge delegates are staying busy with webinars to stay current on the 2020 Convention-related items. This virus cannot keep SPJST from moving forward! I hope everyone is staying safe and keeping cool with the warm temperatures during this Texas summer.

Weldon Galler celebrates 100th Birthday with drive-by parade

Lodge 66, Waco member and World War II Veteran Weldon Galler celebrated his 100th birthday on Sunday, July 19, 2020, with a drive-by parade on MacArthur Street in Waco. Neighbors, friends, family, car

clubs, and community members drove by, honked, and waved as Brother Galler and his family observed and celebrated from the front yard. Sadly, Brother Galler passed away four days later on July 23.

Lodge 92, Fort Worth: Paprskar tournament canceled

Lodge 92, Fort Worth presents July meeting report Greetings from Lodge 92, Fort Worth!

This month brought about our first meeting since March, and in those months, our lodge hall began to receive a little refurbishing - inside and out.

Events Manager Jon Durham and Bar Manager Jeanette Tesar re-sealed the parking lot. They also stained and resealed the dance floor and the exposed doors and woodwork in the hall as well as the front door of the hall. The two also took on various other projects to renew and revive our lovely facility. Thank you, Jon and Jeanette, for all your hard work!

Thanks to Lodge 79, Corpus Christi member Edward J. Marek of Cantonment, Florida, for sharing this photo of his vehicle with the personalized “IM CZECH” license plate. Edward was born in Corpus Christi, but he and his wife moved to Florida in 2003 after they retired to be near their daughter. Edward is a 58-year SPJST member, and his wife has been a member for 49 years. We appreciate Brother Marek sharing the photo and for their longtime membership in SPJST.

Lodge 202 Jourdanton awards scholarships Lodge 202, Jourdanton met Sunday, July 5, 2020, at Pleasanton Lions Club with 20 members and guests attending.

Jenna Fair led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Silence was observed for deceased members John F. Barta and Frances Emillia Kovar, and in honor of our armed forces.

President James House welcomed everyone. All officers were present. Secretary Bettie House read the minutes that were approved as read. Treasurer Sandra Hoggard presented the financial report.

A letter from the Home Office was read stating the lodge premium refund was $1,148.92. Thank you notes were received from Madison and Kenzie Lutz for helping purchase their animals at the livestock show. A thank you was received from the Frances Kovar family for the memorial.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Kathleen Polasek noted the COVID-19 virus is sweeping the nation, and guidelines need to be followed.

Youth Leader Regina House stated Youth Showcase photography, pictorial arts, and constructed items entries are due today.

Katlyn Polasek was presented the SPJST District Seven Merit Award, SPJST Miles Marek Scholarship, and Lodge 202 Scholarship. She also received the Presidential Volunteer Silver Award for community service. Madison Lutz will also receive a Lodge 202

Regina House was recognized for serving the lodge as youth leader for 15 years, and Sandra Hoggard as assistant youth leader for 12 years.

The meeting adjourned.

Tropical tasting dessert an entertaining hit

What could make a long day sitting by the pool or an afternoon at the beach even better? A dessert reminiscent of a tropical island, of course. Pineapple and coconut are two flavors that evoke Caribbean shores with steel drum bands playing in the background and salty seas on the horizon.

Pineapple upside down cake is a familiar dessert classic on which people can put their own unique spins. With this recipe from “Vegan Cooking for Be-

ginners” (Publications International) by PIL editors, vegan dessert guests can also enjoy the fare thanks to veganfriendly ingredients.

Pineapple Upside Down Cake Makes 10 servings Topping 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 1/4 cup vegan buttery spread 7 canned or fresh pineapple slices 7 maraschino cherries Cake 3 tablespoons boiling water 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup vegetable oil 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 cup refrigerated coconut milk beverage 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease 9-inch round baking pan.

For topping, cook and stir brown sugar and buttery spread in medium

VĚSTNÍK skillet over medium heat until melted and smooth. Remove from heat. Pour into prepared pan. Arrange pineapple slices in pan, placing cherries in centers of pineapples.

Combine boiling water and flaxseed in small bowl. Let stand until cool.

Whisk flour, baking powder and salt in medium bowl. Whisk granulated sugar, oil and vanilla in large bowl until well blended. Whisk in flaxseed mixture. Stir in flour mixture just until moistened.

Stir in coconut milk just until blended.

Place baking soda in small cup; stir in vinegar. Gently stir vinegar into batter just until blended. Pour batter over pineapple.

Bake 45 to 50 minutes, or until toothpick inserted into center comes out clean. Cool in pan on wire rack for 10 minutes. Run thin knife around edge of pan to loosen cake. Invert onto serving plate. Cool completely.

Note: The cake can also be baked in a 12-inch cast-iron skillet. Melt the buttery spread and brown sugar in the skillet, add the pineapple and cherries and pour the batter over the fruit. Check the cake for doneness at 40 minutes.

State Fraternal Director shares August updates 2020 SPJST Youth Showcase I am happy to report that district judging started Monday, July 13, 2020, and was completed Friday, July 24. Results will be posted no later than Friday, July 31. I have sent emails to participants, their parents, and posted information on social media.

State craft and individual talent judging started Monday, July 27 and will be

complete on Friday, July 31. State Royalty competition will take place via video conference scheduled for Saturday, August 1 beginning at 2 p.m. The competition will be recorded so members will be able to watch our youth compete for the titles of 2020-2021 SPJST State King and Queen at a later date. Dear Readers, Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the youth of Lodge 84, Dallas have not been able to meet face-to-face for our monthly meetings. However, thanks to modern technology, we can do our meetings with help from video web conferencing.

Our participation in the community has been limited, but we are practicing safe social distancing and have kept busy with other activities, and I am here to report on them!

Congratulations to Ryan Ruzicka who earned his learner’s permit and is now able to drive. However, Megan Ruzicka had to have her tonsils removed, and she is recovering nicely. My family has made a move. We are now living closer to our grandparents. This is good because now we can visit them and swim in their pool anytime we want to!

Lyndon B. Johnson — American President The Boyhood That Shaped LBJ Lyndon Baines Johnson (LBJ) was born on August 27, 1908, in central Texas, not far from Johnson City, Texas, which his family had helped settle.

Growing up, he felt the sting of rural poverty. He worked his way through Southwest Texas State Teachers College located in San Marcos, Texas. LBJ learned compassion for the poverty and discrimination of others when he taught students of Mexican descent in Cotulla, Texas. In 1937 he campaigned successfully for the House of Representatives on a New Deal platform. He married Claudia "Lady Bird" Taylor after a whirlwind courtship in 1934.

In the 1960 campaign, LBJ was John F. Kennedy's running mate and was elected JFK’s Vice President. On November 22, 1963, when Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Lyndon Baines Johnson became the 36th President.

In Memory of Joe L. Krivanek

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge Hvezda Texasu, No. 47, Seaton, express out sincere sympathy to the family of our departed sister, LOIS SKALA, age 83, of Clarkson, Texas, who passed away Monday, July 13, 2020, at her residence. Mrs. Skala was born May 2, 1937, in the Briary community to Lewis and Zelma Weaver White. She grew up and attended school in Briary and graduated from Rosebud High School in 1955. She married Frank Skala on June 2, 1956.

She was a homemaker and assisted her husband in their farming and ranching operation. Her happiest times involved being with her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She will be remembered for her beautiful smile and loving personality. She was a Baptist.

She was a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton.

She is survived by husband Frank Skala of Clarkson; daughters Cheryl Prater and husband William of Temple and Karen Skala of Cameron; son David Skala and wife Lois of Rosebud; brother Wendell White and wife Martha of Rosebud; twin sister Louise Kasner and husband Dennis of Rosebud; grandchildren Megan Millican, Jared Skala, Michael Skala, Angela Horine, Kristie Morehouse, and Bethany Beechem; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Joe was in the Air National Guard and worked at First National Bank in Fort Worth, Texas, for 42 years.

Michelle was born to Doris and Willie Provazek on October 1, 1962. Michelle was a loving sister, mother, and Sissy. Michelle loved her family dearly and treasured the time she spent with them. People who knew

Michelle will always remember her for her friendliness and her smile. She was always willing to lend a hand to others and was extremely loving and caring.

Michelle had a passion for her career and loved working in the dental field, where she made many friends. She also loved the outdoors, gardening, and shopping.

She was a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton.

Michelle is survived by daughters Candice Eixman and husband Jarred of Rogers and Casey Crews of Huntsville; brother Kevin Provazek and wife Bobbi-Jean of Temple; sister Janice Wall and husband Jesse of Temple; grandchildren Emery and Jett Eixman; and nieces and nephews Joelle Jenkins and husband Eric, and children Jaelyn and Logan, JC Wall, III and wife Melody, and daughter Georgia, and Jordan Wall and son Jackson.

In Memory of Emil Fridel Emil J. “Sonny” Fridel, age 98, of West, Texas, passed away early Tuesday morning, July 21, 2020, at West Rest Haven in West, Texas.

Graveside service was at 1 p.m.

Friday, July 24 at St. Mary’s Cemetery in West with Reverend Ed Karasek officiating.

Military graveside Emil Fridel rites followed, conducted by West Veterans Honor Guard. Mr. Fridel lay in state from noon until 6 p.m. Thursday, July 23 at Aderhold Funeral Home.

Emil was born June 28, 1922, in Mart, the son of Joe and Ella (Mladenka) Fridel. He attended Axtell and LaVega schools before graduating from Reisel High School in 1939. He played

football and baseball, ran track, and excelled in typing. Emil joined the United States Army in 1940 and was first stationed at Kelly Field in San Antonio. He attended officer’s candidate school in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Baltimore, Maryland. He went on to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he served with the 876th Ordnance Heavy Automotive Maintenance Company. During World War II, Emil served in the Persian Gulf Command in Iran for two years as a company shop officer repairing all vehicles in charge of the command for hauling supplies and other United States transportation uses. He served as a liaison officer between the British and Russian military forces, for which he later received a medal of recognition. He was then transferred to France. After the war, he served for several years in the Army Reserve, eventually retiring with the rank of Captain. He traveled the world on troop ships and told his family many stories about his time in the service.

Emil returned to the states, and on May 12, 1947, he was united in marriage to Pearl Deiterman in West. He would say he “met a pretty girl” at Lone Star Hall in West. They fell in love, and she became his wife of 64 years. Pearl preceded him in death on September 21, 2011.

Emil also worked as a supervisor at General Tire and Rubber Company in Waco for a short time. He then worked for the United States Postal Service in West for 31 years. He enjoyed helping people as a postal clerk at West Post Office and retired as supervisor of Postal Operations in 1978. Emil was a Little League coach for the VFW baseball team. He liked to attend West Trojan football games where he worked in the press box and called in the scores to the Waco newspaper. Emil also worked at the city elections. After retirement from the post office, he worked at the Knights of Columbus Club and for Aderhold Funeral Home in West. He and his wife attended doll conventions and art shows, and he delighted in showing off his wife’s art work. Emil enjoyed playing dominoes, reading, and visiting with his friends at the local bakeries and other businesses in West.

Emil was a member of St Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption in West. He was a member of VFW Post 4819; Knights of Columbus Council 2305; American Legion Post 478; and SPJST Lodge 35, Elk. Emil loved to visit with his lodge friends and attended

Emil was also preceded in death by his parents; and sister Mildred Fridel Scruggs and her spouse Donald Scruggs.

Tons of Angels In a song, Aneta Langerová sings, kolem je spousta andělů, ty je nevidíš, ty je neslyšíš, jsou všude kolem i když třeba spíš, which means “there are tons of angels around, you don’t see them, you don’t hear them, they’re all around you even as you sleep.”

Many of these Czech phrases are similar to those used in English. For instance, to look angelic is vypadat jako anděl; and mít andělskou trpělivost is to have the patience of a saint. If someone is being an absolute dear, you can say ty jsi učiněný anděl.

In Czech, an angel is sometimes referred to as an andílek – a little angel or a cherub. When someone goes swimming and starts to drown, it is said that they swallowed little angels – polykal andělíčky. Slyšel jsem andělíčky zpívat is to see stars after getting a bump on the head - literally translated, it means to

hear the cherubs sing.

A guardian angel, who with any luck stops you from having to hear cherubs singing, is called an anděl strážný. An angel that has fallen from grace is a padlý anděl, and an angel of peace is an anděl míru. The angel that appears out of the blue signifying death is an anděl smrti angel of death.

An andělíček or an andílek are also common pet names. To say that he is mother’s little angel, you can say on je maminčin andílek. If you want to call someone sweetheart or honey, you say andílku.

TCGS August Book: Emigration from Moravia to America 1855-1918: The Area of Zlin The book, Emigration from Moravia to America from the Area of Zlin, is Texas Czech Genealogical Society’s Book of the Month for August 2020.

The Zlín region is located in southeastern Moravia on the banks of the Drevnice River. Its seat of government is located in the city of Zlín, which is a modern city closely connected to the famous Bata Shoe Company which was developed after World War II. MUDr. Josef Simicek, author of the book, states, “The first groups of Czech immigrants started to appear on the North American continent in the fifties of the 19th century. These shy beginnings were interrupted by the civil war during which all American ports were closed for naval transportation.

“The victory of the North and slavery abolition meant a mass escape of black farm laborers to cities, where they hoped

to get easier livelihood. The production of agriculture dropped, and a large area of land lay fallow. The “Immigration Office” was established by the State of Texas, and its agents went to Europe to bring new settlers. They introduced agencies in European ports and published articles in newspapers that glorified America. Endeavors of these agents fetched success.”

Most of the Czech people traveled through the port of Bremen. Their records were archived; however, they were destroyed by the bombings during World War II. Immigrant records were also recorded in the archives of Galveston, Texas, but they were destroyed by the horrible hurricane of 1900.

The USA entrance ports were New York, Baltimore, New Orleans, Indianola, and Galveston. People traveling through New Orleans, Indianola, and Galveston mostly headed to Texas whereas those traveling through Baltimore and New York tended to go to the northern states, but this was not always true.

Reader seeks help tracing ancestors’ route to Texas Dear Readers, I’ve been working on a project tracing the routes and methods of transportation of my great-grandparents and their children from Horni Cermna Bohemia to Galveston and inland into Texas when they immigrated in 1871.

While doing this, it occurred to me that a majority of today’s Czechs do not have much, if any, idea of how their ancestors traveled and some of the issues they encountered so I am expanding my project to include routes and methods of travel from Moravia and Bohemia from period early 1850s to 1900. Obviously, the earlier Czech immigrants had a much more difficult and dangerous journey and the options of travel for later immigrants who had sufficient funds and/or financial assistance from relatives was much easier. Those without sufficient funds still had the option of traveling by walking and using wagons to carry personal items. My main emphasis in Texas is for those who traveled and initially settled in the Cat Spring/New Ulm area and the map in-

VĚSTNÍK cluded reflects the different options available between 1860 and 1871. I have the different routes outlined in the included map, and I’m almost 100 percent certain I have accurate information; however, if someone has different information, I will welcome their comments and review and will change my map routes if their information is correct.

I have also outlined the routes and methods of travel from Moravia and Bohemia to Prague, thence Prague to Bremen where the majority boarded ships for travel to Galveston. At this time, I am 100 percent confident of my outlines Moravia and Bohemia to Prague, but uncertain of the rail route of Prague to Bremen.

I am in need of assistance in collecting information of routes of travel from Prague to Bremen and if any of your members have information as to names of villages traveled through via railroad Prague to Bremen including year of travel, I can outline the railroad route and have a higher confidence of having the correct route. I have a similar outlined map of travel in now Czech Re-

public and Germany which is incomplete at this time and will be sharing that once I have higher confidence in its accuracy.

So what will be helpful is for your members to share written information in diaries, autobiographies/biographies, or notes of Czechs that immigrated. The more information I collect, the more accurate the final product will be and all of that information will be shared with you and others who are interested in receiving it.

It is hard to believe the Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) will be celebrating it’s 20th anniversary in January 2021. One such goal for our anniversary is a new cookbook.

Our first cookbook, Tribute To Czech Cooks, sold out almost before it was received. A second order was placed, ending with the same results. While we paid tribute to Czech cooks in general, the

However, please do not get us wrong. If you did not have the opportunity to submit an ancestor’s recipe in the Tribute To Czech Cooks Cookbook, please feel free for it to be included in our upcoming Cooking With Czech Recipes Cookbook.
