Coronabusters

Lodge 47, Seaton member Billy Popelka’s simple idea to thank medical staff, first responders, grocery store folks, truck drivers, and postmen, turned into a major production with a viral YouTube video that has garnered national attention. The “East Bell County Coronabusters” video, produced

by Earl Nottingham, has more than 25,000 views. It begins with Jerry Haisler of Lodge 47, Seaton delivering a monologue of current times on the front porch of Tom Sefcik Hall in Seaton. He explains that he wrote a song about the East Bell County Coronabusters, when he looks in the distance to see the Coronabusters rolling up in a Hummer. Armed with social distancing, cans of Lysol, and toilet paper, the group polka dances with kolaches to Jerry’s song. See more on page 22.

Did you know . . .

A friend shared a list with me of more than 30 interesting tidbits. I found most of them to be true, at least from my perspective. The more I read them, the more intrigued I was! (Here are several of them; I’ll share more of them in an upcoming issue.)

Your shoes are the first thing people subconsciously notice about you. Wear nice shoes.

If you sit for more than 11 hours a day, there’s a 50 percent chance you’ll die within the next three years.

There are at least six people in the world who look exactly like you.

There’s a 9 percent chance that you’ll meet one of them in your lifetime.

Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less food that is manufactured in plants.

Resolution enables district officers to serve through spring 2021;;’ ; May lodge meetings canceled

by Brian Vanicek, FIC SPJST President SPJST District Officer elections which were to have taken place at the 2020 spring meetings have been postponed for one year, until spring of 2021.

The Supreme Lodge passed a resolution in its May 1 teleconference to postpone the election in deference to focusing on SPJST’s 2020 Convention process, including the hosting of delegates meetings in each district. The decision was also made to cancel all SPJST Spring District meetings until 2021.

Given the extraordinary circumstances of the current year, the Supreme Lodge expresses its appreciation to all district officers who are willing to serve one additional year until the Society proceeds with a new election in 2021.

In the event that there are individuals who are unable to serve through the spring of 2021, vacancies may be filled at the pre-convention delegate meetings that the Supreme Lodge requests to be held in each district prior to the August 14 to 16 Convention.

Update on Social Distancing Phase I of the State of Texas’ ongoing plan to safely and strategically open Texas began on Friday, May 1 and will continue until at least May 15. The guidelines allowed retail stores, restaurants, movie theaters, malls, museums, and libraries to reopen on Friday, May 1, while limiting their capacity to 25 percent of their listed occupancy.

Public facilities including amusement venues must remain closed to visitors during this time period.

Correspondingly, the SPJST directive which calls for SPJST lodges to refrain

from meeting and/or hosting events at least through the previously stated date of May 16 remains in place. There remains a keen awareness on the part of the SPJST Supreme Lodge that it may be premature to declare victory as the number of Texans infected continues to increase.

While the State of Texas offers no specific guidelines for civic or fraternal organizations that seek to meet, guidelines that seek to “minimize in-person contact with people who are not in the same household” remain intact; likewise, guidelines specify that, “People over the age of 65 are strongly encouraged to stay at home as much as possible . . . and, if leaving the home to (continue to implement social distancing.)” Taking these things into consideration, lodges are requested to refrain from meeting through at least the month of May. A decision will be made prior to the Memorial Day weekend on whether or not to extend this date. Until that time, lodges are encouraged to experiment with and/or incorporate online teleconferencing as a way to stay connected. The spjst.org website includes some basic information that will enable you to get started.

In accordance with the State of Texas most recent Executive Order regarding building usage, lodges with buildings that host venues such as weddings and receptions may do so provided that they operate at 25 percent of the listed occupancy for the facility; however, in order to comply with the current guidelines, lodge bar facilities must remained closed.

Before any SPJST lodge that offers bingo commence with reopening their

games, the bingo licensees are asked to contact their local officials — the office of the county judge or mayor — for guidance as it relates to their specific area as these guidelines do appear to vary somewhat from place to place.

“This strategic approach to opening the state of Texas prioritizes the health and safety of our communities and follows the guidelines laid out by our team of medical experts,” says Texas Governor Greg Abbott in referencing Phase I of the State of Texas social distancing

update. “Now more than ever, Texans must remain committed to safe distancing practices that reduce the spread of COVID-19, and we must continue to rely on doctors and data to provide us with the safest strategies to restore Texans' livelihoods. We must also focus on protecting the most vulnerable Texans from exposure to COVID-19. If we remain focused on protecting the lives of our fellow Texans, we can continue to open the Lone Star State.”

FROM THE SUPREME LODGE March 20, 2020 Minutes of the Special Called Meeting of SPJST Supreme Lodge held via teleconference The meeting was held on Friday, March 20, 2020, at 10 a.m.

President Vanicek opened the teleconference with the Pledge of Allegiance.

President Vanicek reviewed the status of the COVID19 pandemic we are dealing with. He stated that we are in a state of transition to allow some staff to work from home with remote connections to their desk computers. He reported that a staff member was ill and that policy has been set dealing with when an ill staff person can return to work to ensure protection of other staff members. He reviewed government policy implementing limitations on business and required closings of businesses.

During review of events, the Corpus Christi Getaway came up. Director Victorick moved, and Chairman Kaspar seconded, that the Corpus Christi Getaway be canceled. A roll call vote determined the motion carried unanimously.

Executive Camp Director Rob Clift presented a report.

He reported on the status of camp and the staff. No events will be held until after May 16 due to established policy regarding COVID-19. He commented on various items such as trade-in of the old salvage zeroturn mower for some needed equipment. He discussed developing several projects using an alternate designer that was providing a more cost efficient design. He reported that there were no cancellations of events due to COVID-19.

He proceeded to discuss four requests for funds: 1. Developing a camp store not to exceed $750 including a software app.

2. An ice dispenser at the water station at a cost of $1,500.

3. Upgrading high ropes and repair and replacement cost not to exceed $12,000.

4. Onsite housing for full time assistant. Need $16,000

President Vanicek shared investment data he had received from Andrew Paone at Wellington, and he proceeded to illustrate how COVID-19 had impacted portfolios. He showed the year-end book value of our portfolio compared with the current value. We will likely see a return to more normal valuations as soon as the crisis has peaked and passed.

President Vanicek did point out the vast improvement in the quality of our portfolio which is good preparation for the next recession.

Editor/Director of Communication Zavodny reported that the March 23 Vestnik will include the Supreme Lodge recommendations to the by-laws for the 2020 Convention. A copy of the by-law recommendations will also be mailed to all delegates. The Vestnik/Communication Department will begin working remotely on March 23.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and a moment of silence was observed in respect to our departed members and in honor of our government officials, military troops, law enforcement, firemen, EMS, healthcare workers, and others affected by the coronavirus disease pandemic (COVID-19), especially our members who have been affected. Chief Financial Officer Mikeska led the Supreme Lodge in an opening prayer.

ANNOUNCEMENTS President Vanicek announced there will be four visitors present on the video conference today. The visitors are Andrew Paone and Liz Kleinerman of Wellington Management to report on investments at 1 p.m.; Glen Tobleman of Lewis and Ellis Actuarial Firm to present his report at 1:30 p.m.; and Rob Clift, executive director of Camp Kubena, who will present his report at 1:45 p.m.

Chief Financial Officer Mikeska voiced his appreciation for the staff who continue to come into the Home Office and keep the day-to-day operations going. The Supreme Lodge acknowledged its gratitude for everyone’s hard work during this time.

VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT Vice President Dixon presented his report on sales, issued applications, persistency, district persistency, and application errors.

The notes were acknowledged on motion by Director Pospisil, seconded by Director Bayer, and the motion carried unanimously.

EXECUTIVE MINUTES The meeting went into executive session from 10:21 until 10:29 a.m. to consider approval of executive minutes.

OLD BUSINESS PRESIDENT’S REPORT President Vanicek reported on SPJST’s response to COVID-19 in the preceding six-week period. He made reference to the social distancing guidelines which were implemented in the third week of March and which were expected to continue until at least May 16. He noted that this had been an especially trying time for SPJST lodges, and especially the 35 lodges that maintain properties as many of them had lost their revenue streams during this time of social distancing. To that end, he said been exploring relief options for the lodges, noting that very few of the lodges would be able to benefit directly from CARES Act legislation as it was geared primarily to those businesses that maintain salaried employees. He indicated that he had filed for the Paycheck Protection Program on behalf of the SPJST Home Office. Preliminary indications were that the SPJST Home Office would qualify.

President Vanicek stated that beginning with this meeting, the written report presented by State Fraternal Director Frank Horak would be summarily presented and considered by the Supreme Lodge for acceptance.

Director Bayer moved that we accept the report as presented by State Fraternal Director Horak, seconded by Director Pospisil. The motion carried unanimously.

President Vanicek stated that beginning with this meeting, the written report presented by Human Resources Administrator Lynette Talasek would be summarily presented and considered by the Supreme Lodge for acceptance. Items that require board consideration and/or approval would continue to be included, considered, and voted upon.

CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER’S REPORT Chief Financial Officer Mikeska presented his report on IRS 990 form updates, Enterprise Risk Management (ERM), and real estate, including the Social Security building. Discussion of Camp Kubena will be postponed until Executive Camp Director Rob Clift is present to evaluate and prioritize.

Chief Financial Officer Mikeska requested the ERM chairman of each subcommittee present his/her committee’s report as soon as possible prior to a meeting of the main ERM Committee and prior to our conference with A. M. Best, if it is held this year.

Director Stavinoha moved that we do not engage in the A.M. Best evaluation; he requested to redirect the funding to an efficiency study of Home Office operations. The motion was seconded by Vice President Dixon, and the motion carried unanimously.

Chief Financial Officer Mikeska requested the ERM chairman of each subcommittee present their committee’s report no later than May 15, 2020.

CONTROLLER’S REPORT Controller Vajdak presented his report on Vestnik subscriptions, printing and postage cost of the Vestnik, lodge membership, certificate count, refund to lodges, address update, admin system, computer system and training, scanning project update, and the privacy notice.

EDITOR/DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATION’S REPORT Editor/Director of Communication Zavodny reported on travel/meetings, Vestnik summary, online presence, float appearances, annual lodge mailings, activities of past and current quarter, and Publication Committee annual meeting. She noted if the convention gets postponed, she will extend the deadline for advertisements in the official convention souvenir program book.

NEW BUSINESS PRESIDENT’S REPORT (PART I) President Vanicek reported that in previous discussions, the Supreme Lodge had discussed trimming the number of scholarships awarded in 2020 to 40. In light of the amount of funding available - without having to draw on the Convention allocation, he recommended increasing the number to 47.

Director Bayer moved that we change the scholarship amount from 40 to 47 for this year only. Director Vic-

torick seconded the motion, and the motion carried with 10 in favor and one opposed. Voting in favor: President Vanicek, Vice President Dixon, Chief Financial Officer Mikeska, Controller Vajdak, Director Victorick, Director Pospisil, Director Engelke, Director Davis, Director Kaspar, and Director Bayer. CONVENTION President Vanicek stated that it was his concern that routine dialogue pertaining to the 33rd SPJST Convention has been inhibited because of the separation of our members due to the social distancing associated with COVID-19.

President Vanicek moved that the 33rd SPJST Convention be rescheduled for August 14, 15, 16, 2020. Director Victorick seconded the motion, and the motion passed with 10 in favor and one opposed. Voting in favor: President Vanicek, Vice President Dixon, Chief Financial Officer Mikeska, Controller Vajdak, Director Victorick, Director Pospisil, Director Engelke, Director Davis, Director Stavinoha, and Director Kaspar. SCREENING GUIDELINES President Vanicek reported that the SPJST By-Law Committee had met on March 28, 2020, to address matters related to the 33rd Convention as well as to discuss screening of candidates for the various Home Office management positions and district director posts. In reviewing the prospective candidates, he said that they had some difficulty in making an exact determination as to what would qualify and/or disqualify an individual from serving. To that end, President Vanicek indicated that he had been asked to provide the Committee with more specific criteria in making their decision. Relying on multiple sources, including Texas state government, Texas Department of Insurance, and various industry best practice standards, President Vanicek constructed a qualifications checklist for the Supreme Lodge to consider and to vote upon.

Controller Vajdak moved to accept as presented the screening requirements for officers and directors. Director Bayer seconded the motion, and the motion carried unanimously.

INVESTMENT REPORT Supreme Lodge Chairman Kaspar welcomed Andrew Paone and Liz Kleinerman of Wellington Management to the online video conference. Andrew and Liz discussed portfolio performance, income, reinvestment projections, cash withdrawals form the account, compliance, risk, diversification, mitigating income risk, and alternative investing.

Relationship Manager Paone discussed the market movement due to COVID-19 and some bond sales that were made earlier in the quarter provided some risk reduction. The outflow of funds was also discussed and the projected reinvestment yields. Portfolio Manager Kleinerman discussed treasury yields are much lower due to the economic impact due to COVID-19. There was some discussion of the positives due to the swift policy responses made such as our government lowering the rates and purchasing treasury bonds. There was discussion on the low interest rate environment, how long it could last, and inflation possibilities. Questions were asked about other investment options to increase our investment income, and Wellington stressed safety of investments and did not provide many options from the fixed income unit of Wellington.

ACTUARY Actuary Glenn Tobleman reviewed the Actuarial Opinion and Memorandum for 2019 with the Supreme Lodge. The Actuarial Opinion was prepared in accordance with the NAIC Annual Statement Instructions for Life and Health Insurance Companies. He reviewed his certifications of reserves and cash flow testing scenarios.

Mr. Tobleman issued a clean opinion for the company on cash flow testing. He did note this was completed before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chief Financial Officer Mikeska stated he would like to open up home loan mortgages to our membership again.

He also commented on reported net loss from operations the past two years, and fraternal benefits are looked at as dividends and when gains are down, dividends should be as well. He noted our investment income is down due to low returns in the bond market.

Recess was taken from 2:30 to 2:40 p.m.

NEW BUSINESS CONTINUED PRESIDENT’S REPORT (PART II) President Vanicek reported on Human Resources Administrator Talasek’s final proposal for the Home Office employee insurance renewal offer which would result in a reduction of approximately $52,398 over the current health care package for the SPJST Home Office and staff.

The Supreme Lodge acknowledged Human Resources Administrator Talasek’s efforts on this project.

President Vanicek moved that we accept the proposal from Gallagher for employee health benefits. Chief Financial Officer Mikeska seconded the motion, and the motion carried unanimously.

VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT Vice President Dixon reported email blasts and Vestnik notifications went out to inform the agents they would not be required to have face-to-face meetings with prospective members wanting to purchase an insurance certificates with SPJST. They would be allowed to use web conferencing to meet for prospective annuity and insurance needs.

Chief Financial Officer Mikeska moved approval of the recommended rates on annuities and universal life as presented in his report. Controller Vajdak seconded the motion, and the motion carried unanimously. The rates remain the same from the last quarter.

Chief Financial Officer Mikeska reported delegate check-in for the convention will now be August 14, 2020.

CONTROLLER’S REPORT Controller Vajdak reported on the annual statement for 2019, quarterly statement of operations for March 31, 2020, gain/loss in assets, reserves, surplus, premium income and annuities, death claims, summary of premium breakdown, investment income, fraternal expenses, insurance in force (highest ever at $1,008,000,000), lapses, certificates in force, refund to lodges for 2019, summary of annuities, lodge management, report of premium paying and paid-up certificates, top 15 lodges, and universal life.

Controller Vajdak reported the actuarial firm sent annuities with a one- and two-year term for approval to Texas Department of Insurance. It is in process.

Controller Vajdak reported the external audit is in process, and the firm Jaynes, Reitmeier, Boyd & Therrell, P.C. is conducting our audit remotely. All is going well at this time.

CAMP KUBENA President Vanicek reported the SPJST Officers and Directors met for a strategic planning workshop at the Home Office on September 10 and 11, 2019. Following a presentation by Executive Camp Director Rob Clift, District One Director Donnie Victorick and District Three Director John Engelke volunteered to serve as Supreme Lodge liaisons to Camp Kubena. Since that time, the group has met several times both at Camp Kubena and by teleconference. State Fraternal Director Frank Horak and President Brian Vanicek have also been involved in these meetings.

President Vanicek stated because of the fluid nature of matters and decision-making related to social distancing, he moved that the Camp Kubena Advisory Committee, which consists of Rob Clift, Donnie Victorick, John Engelke, Frank Horak, and Brian Vanicek (as ex-officio), be recognized as a special committee of the Supreme Lodge with the power to act on items relevant to the rou-

tine oversight and the scheduling of groups at Camp Kubena. The Committee shall continue to exist until such time that it be discharged by action of the Supreme Lodge. Director Stavinoha seconded the motion, and the motion carried unanimously.

Executive Camp Director Rob Clift gave an update on the camp and discussed future plans as well as current, past and future bookings of the camp. He gave an update on COVID-19 and the impact it has had on the 2020 camping season. There have been five cancellations, but those groups have all rescheduled for the 2021 camping season. The start date for the camp will be high ropes training on June 1, 2020.

FINANCE COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATIONS The Finance Committee met on March 14, 2020, at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. The Committee’s recommendations to the Supreme Lodge are: 1. Cancel the Corpus Christi Getaway.

2. Discontinue the services of AM Best.

3. Pay only 50 percent of employee health and dental premium cost.

4. Pay only 50 percent of retired employee and spouse’s health and dental premium costs.

5. Do not increase overall number of employees as of March 14, 2020, and attempt to achieve a 10 percent reduction in the number of employees.

FINANCIAL ADVISOR Director Stavinoha moved to have AQS on board as our financial advisor by July 1, 2020; the motion was seconded by Director Victorick. After discussion, the motion failed with one in favor and 10 opposed. Voting in favor: Director Stavinoha. Voting in opposition: President Vanicek, Vice President Dixon, Chief Financial Officer Mikeska, Controller Vajdak, Director Victorick, Director Pospisil, Director Engelke, Director Davis, Director Kaspar, and Director Bayer. It was decided Chief Financial Officer Mikeska would coordinate an online video conference with AQS to hear their proposals to provide basic investment advice on how they would propose to increase our investment income.

EFFICIENCY STUDY Director Victorick moved to hire BKD, which is a CPA firm, to perform the efficiency study. Controller Vajdak seconded the motion, and the motion carried unanimously.

CONVENTION President Vanicek asked Supreme Lodge members who are not seeking re-election at the 33rd SPJST Convention, Vice President Dixon, Director Kaspar, and Director Bayer, if they are willing to stay on board in their positions until the Convention can be held. Each member agreed to stay on board until such time.

Director Victorick moved that the terms of the Supreme Lodge will continue until the end of the 33rd SPJST Convention. Director Pospisil seconded the motion, and the motion carried unanimously.

AUDIT COMMITTEE Chairman of the Internal Audit Committee Stavinoha will make a decision one month before the July Supreme Lodge meeting whether the audit committee will meet on Monday, July 20 prior to the third quarterly meeting which will be Tuesday, July 21.

We have a great investment management firm in Wellington, but they are too large to provide us with what smaller investment firms can provide us with due to volume which they deal with. Granted, Wellington is world-renowned, but they are not what we need especially in the situation that we are in. We need to think outside the box for alternative investments in different sectors which they will not consider. A firm like AQS can provide us with those investment opportunities. Our purchases need to be in smaller quantities to provide more diversification.

Takeaways from the AQS Symposium that I attended in March: We cannot buy only corporate bonds and sell life insurance and expect to survive.

The trend is to move towards real estate-related ventures.

Higher rates are not returning for some time. We must manage and invest accordingly.

We need to investigate direct lending with our investment manager. If they do not provide for it, we must find someone who does. We do not need to try to do it ourselves; in fact, we can’t. We need to find someone who does this.

We are going to have to get over not investing in NAIC 3 and 4 rated products as well as BBBs. Current investments are heading towards multi-

family, mixed use, office, industrial, and hospitality. No investments should be in the areas of land, self-storage, or business enterprises.

Risk is less during inflation than during deflation.

Wherever there is risk, opportunity is near.

The best time to invest in equities is when everyone else is afraid to.

This was an exciting meeting with the virtual contact. This could be the new way of conducting meetings to save expenses and get a lot accomplished in one day rather than two or three days of face-to-face meetings.

We have a lot of challenges and some difficult decisions to make regarding our organization. I hope everyone realizes the necessity to put on their business hat and not rely on personal feelings. When it comes to business decisions, all else takes a back seat.

With BKD doing an efficiency study on all departments, I believe this will help SPJST .

We all have to adjust in many ways because of the current coronavirus pandemic. But it does not stop us from doing business. We need to find different ways to improve sales investments and maybe bring back home loans.

Commentary What a wonderful thing technology is. The Supreme Lodge held its first-ever online meeting. It exceeded all my expectations. Everything ran very smoothly. It was so easy to follow everyone’s presentation, and I found myself more focused in the meeting. Each presenter’s document was right there for all of us to see and follow.

Doing the meeting online saved a large amount of expenses. We as a board seemed to work more efficiently, too. I very rarely participated in online meetings before March 2020, with less than five per year. Since the pandemic began, I do at least two online meetings per day.

With half the Home Office working remotely, I am pleased to hear how well this has worked. Some staff may do this permanently.

As the Supreme Lodge, we continue to look for ways to trim expenses. I look forward to BKD doing an operational study on how SPJST operates and see where SPJST can be more efficient.

If anyone has questions about our decisions, budget, why things were done a certain way, or convention bylaw amendments, please feel free to email me your questions.

I was one of 14 people chosen to be on the Fort Bend County task force to reopen businesses in Fort Bend County. As of April 29, 2020, we have been fortunate with 955 cases out of 800,000 in Fort Bend County. We have had 22 deaths, with all being over age 65, and all having had major underlying health conditions. One of our goals was to try to get consumer confidence up once businesses start to reopen in May. The media always gives us such bad news. I wanted to give you some good news and statistics.

As of April 29, Texas numbers include 40 counties with no cases; 144 counties have less than 10 cases; 170 counties have zero deaths; 231 counties have less than five deaths; .087 percent of Texans have confirmed cases; half of the cases - 45 percent - are in five counties; .0023 percent of Texans have died from the virus.

In contrast, New York City deaths are 200 times higher than any other city in the world. One-third of all United States’ deaths are in New York City. New York City has 7 million people. The US has 330 million.

All the media and politicians spin data and the narrative to fit their objective. Give me sports back where the final score is black and white and not 1 million shades of grey.

Commentary The Home Office response to COVID-19 was very good in the way everyone handled it. I feel our leadership was on top of it creating a smooth transition among all departments.

Congratulations to all of the scholarship winners.

Camp Kubena Advisory Committee will be instrumental in taking care of various situations. It will be very important for the committee to stay in constant communication regarding changes due to COVID-19.

Congratulations to Vice President Dixon for spearheading our Society as a billion-dollar company in life insurance sales.

The convention has been changed to August. The timelines will now be different, and hopefully, we will get to hold the convention, keeping in mind the health of our members.

Thank you to Melanie for setting up the online video conference through GoToMeeting and to all Supreme Lodge members for embracing technology. This innovative first-ever web-faced meeting was a success. We will continue to embrace these innovative changes and move forward through 2020 for the best of our organization. Commentary I have decided to stay on as District Seven Director until the Convention - whenever that may be. As I’m thinking through this, I do not believe that the Convention will take place in August. There is too much against us at this time. There are a lot of rules sent out by federal, state, county, and cities that we must abide.

Check them out in your area. I do not want our members and friends to come down with the virus.

Wear your masks, and stay at home if you can. A gathering of five to 10 people might be okay, but we cannot have more than that. They say spacing should be around six feet from each other. In my opinion, I think that the Convention should be canceled for now, and rescheduled for June 2021. I am thinking about our membership. Let’s not do something drastic that would affect this. A large group - like the Convention would bring together - might not be good.

I have been working out of my home since March 16, 2020. I have not been out of my home since then.

Your lodge refunds are all less than last year. If you want to increase your refund, you must sell more life insurance and annuities.

Congratulations are in order for our district members, namely, Grand Age of 96, 75-year members, and 50-year members. Special congratulations to my friend Francis Kovar on her 104th birthday.

On February 8, the Supreme Lodge met with the four standing committees to review the changes to our by-laws and operations manual. The meeting went very well. The committees also met separately afterwards.

Our regular April board meeting was the first online video conference held by the Supreme Lodge. Everything went okay. This saved the Society some funds.

We might have more of these in the future.

Lodge 24, Cyclone cancels Mother’s Day barbecue lunch With great frustration, Lodge 24, Cyclone canceled its longstanding Mother’s Day lunch. The meal was a linchpin of our lodge. We are hopeful that we may start having some of the events that are or were scheduled. It is such a pity that nature has provided us with such springtime beauty. We are looking forward to putting our energy into the next event and some new ones, too. We are happy to be here.

Lillie Mae Wright of Lodge 17, New Tabor achieves Grand Age of 96 SPJST congratulates Sister Lillie Mae Wright of Lodge 17, Caldwell, who will celebrate her 96th birthday on May 24, 2020. As such, Lillie is entitled to all SPJST member benefits with no further dues or assessments.

Lillie was born in Cooks Point, Texas, on May 24, 1924, to J.V. and Albina Sefcik. She had one sister, Doris Hovarak, who is now deceased.

Lillie married Leonard C. Wright on February 23, 1946. They were blessed with two children - daughter Patricia Nickel (spouse Peter Nickel) of Brookville, Florida, and son Alan L. Wright of Marque, Texas.

Sister Lillie lost Leonard on December 14, 1994. They were in the John Deere dealership for 25 years.

She worked for Key Bank in Hartwick, New York, for 22 years. They lived in Hartwick until they retired in 1987. She moved to Montgomery, Texas.

In 2007, she built her house on her son’s property in Marquez, Texas.

Sister Lillie has lived a good life and is healthy. She loves knitting and crocheting. She still mows her lawn and loved to work outdoors, until she had to quit because of her age.

Again, we congratulate Sister Lillie Mae Wright on attaining the Grand Age of 96. Thank you, Sister Lillie, for your membership with SPJST for all these years. May God bless you and your family with good health and happiness.

Lodge Karel Jonáš No. 28, East Bernard reports on March meeting SPJST Lodge Karel Jonáš No. 28, East Bernard members met for their quarterly meeting on Sunday, March 8, 2020, at 12 noon in Wharton County Library meeting room.

All officers were present along with several members.

President Glenn Kaminsky called the meeting to order. Everyone said the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silent prayer was observed for Glenn Pribyl and Frances Cordell who passed away.

Glenn Kaminsky said grace, and the meeting recessed for our luncheon and a social.

When the meeting resumed, Glenn asked for the minutes from the December 8, 2019, meeting to be read by Helen Kelner. Minutes were then approved as read.

Glenn then asked for the treasurer’s report for December, January, and February by Anton Kelner. All reports were approved.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Helen reported on upcoming fraternal activities. All reports were turned in and taxes were filed.

Glenn and Jeanette reported that on February 8, the state standing committees met at the Home Office in Temple for a pre-convention meeting. Glenn and Jeanette were also present for the Finance Committee and Publication Committee meetings, respectively.

Helen reported we have six 50-year members this year, and seven 75-year members. After discussion, members agreed to make presentations at the September quarterly meeting.

Resolution for Jimmy Losack and Glenn Pribyl were in the Vestnik. We received thank you notes from Children’s Protective Services and the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center in Temple.

Helen also asked about a Join Hands Day project. It was agreed that the Czech National Cemetery in East Bernard needs help with its fence. All agreed that this would be our project.

Glenn Kaminsky discussed the plans to be brought up at the convention and the proposed changes involving officers and directors. Members were enlightened on plans for the next four years.

A big thank you goes to Patrick Parma on the cross he donated for a door prize. Next, door prizes were handed out.

The next quarterly meeting is scheduled for June 28 at 12 noon at Wharton County Library.

Lodge 48, Beyersville reports on March meeting The March meeting came to order at 7:01 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance.

Alice read the secretary’s report, and Margie made a motion, seconded by Howard, to accept the report. Bonnie U. read the treasurer’s report. Linda made a motion, seconded by Larry, to accept the report.

Michelle gave the youth report and said they completed a tie blanket at the meeting to donate to the food pantry on the 14th. They had their dog walk on the 7th, the district spring meeting is on the 15th, and the youth will be working the Texas Critter Crusader fundraiser on the 21st. Michelle will attend the youth leaders workshop on the 20th to 22nd.

They are working on setting a date for the next Lucky Duck fundraiser and plan on working on a blanket for Mother’s Day to donate to the nursing home. The youth club is also planning to donate $100 for carts to be used at the food pantry.

Lodge 107, Floresville reports on April video conference Lodge 107, Floresville held a video conference meeting on Saturday, April 25, 2020, at 3 p.m.

President Bielefeld called the meeting to order. Roll of officers was called, and all were present: President Trey Bielefeld, Vice President Larry Bertrand, Secretary Wendy Pruski, Treasurer Oscar Korus, Reporter Polly Bayer, Hall Manager Roxy Bertrand, Fraternal Activities Coordinator Bob Bayer (District Seven Director), Youth Leader Lian Lynn, and Assistant Youth Leader Launa Tholkes.

The minutes from the March meeting were not read, and no treasurer’s report was presented.

President Bielefeld received two quotes for the hall’s roof repairs. One quote was for applying a silicone coating and the other quote was for replacing the entire roof. Due to the current events, the roof repairs were tabled.

Youth Leader Lynn gave a report and said the youth were taking pictures of their painted rocks and sending them to the Home Office to be judged.

Hall Manager Bertrand reported on hall rentals being canceled, which was a total of seven. The lawn at the hall needs to be mowed. At this time, the mower, weed eater, and push mower would not start. She asked, “Anybody want to help?” No replies from anybody!

District Seven Director Bayer stated

VĚSTNÍK the convention was rescheduled for Friday, August 14 to Sunday, August 16, 2020, at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center. All rooms already reserved from the various hotels would automatically be rescheduled. No action is required.

Lodge 187 Round Rock hosts virtual meeting Hello, and I hope all is well with you.

We did a virtual meeting and discussed Easter and what we are all doing to keep well and safe. Everyone got to meet the Easter Bunny! We were all so excited that the Easter Bunny went walking and driving throughout the community. It was truly a blessing for the all the kiddos and the young-at-heart.

We had lots of bandanas donated, and we made masks out of them and included a coffee filter with the hair ties.

We delivered them throughout the local community.

The kids are so excited that the SPJST Youth Program decided to do a virtual rock decorating contest. We will be sending in the pictures soon.

Lydia Alholm of Lodge 92, Fort Worth Celebrates 100th Birthday with an Outdoor Party ✿ April 30, 2020 Written by Libbie Vrla Photos by CarrieAnn Jones, Jerry Milan, and Libbie Vrla Lydia Alholm celebrated her 100th birthday on Thursday, April 30, 2020, with an outdoor celebration on her balcony at the Wellington Retirement Home where she lives. Due to the coronavirus, no one was permitted in or out at the Wellington. Lydia’s daughter-in-law Kathy Alholm and grandsons Matt and Tim from the Chicago area and grandson Dan from Franklin, Tennessee, had all planned to come help her celebrate but this was not possible due to the virus.

Lydia told me earlier that the activity director from the Wellington came to interview her, but she didn’t know why other than she was going to have a birthday. I called the Wellington Activity Director and learned they were planning a celebration and would have two proclamations from the City of North Richland Hills Officials. I told the front desk that every year, I give Lydia flowers and chocolates for her birthday and asked if I could drop these off at the door for them to deliver to her room. I further asked if I could come to the celebration. They know me at the front desk and said that I could come, but would have to wear a face mask and gloves and keep a safe distance. I also asked if Jerry and Henrietta Milan could come, too; they said yes - as long as they follow the rules.

All the residents at the Wellington received a flyer for all to be on their balconies at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 30 to celebrate Lydia’s 100th birthday, that there would be a parade and live music.

The grandsons called WinStar, and WinStar sent huge letters - “Jackpot! Happy 100th Birthday Lydia!” for the front yard.

Carolyn Cleveland bought lots of red poppies, which were stuck in the ground under the balcony where Lydia was standing along with several huge “Happy Birthday” posters. Henrietta Milan had painted two birthday posters and got as many birthday wishes and autographs as she could. Henrietta’s second huge sign had photos and Vestnik articles about Lydia and late husband Roy, which filled both the front and back side.

The parade consisted of a fire truck, police car, the postman, and a bunch of other cars with “Happy Birthday, Lydia” signs, balloons, and all waving and lots of horns blowing. These cars were those folks that go to WinStar with Lydia each

month. The live music performance on the lawn was by a person on the keyboard whose mother lives at the Wellington and he was the singer, and another on the guitar. They played “Happy Birthday, Lydia” several times, and we all sang as loud as possible. They also played lots of old songs that Lydia would be familiar with.

Jerry also led us in a couple of Czech songs. We were down in the parking lot in front of Lydia’s balcony at the Wellington and having a good time.

To date, Lydia has received four bouquets of flowers, 125 birthday cards, lots of “Happy 100th Birthday” signs, and she also received a birthday card from President Donald Trump. Her two caregivers were with Lydia on the balcony, and Lydia enjoyed every minute of the celebration.

Besides Jerry and Henrietta and myself attending, there was Carolyn Cleveland and members of SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth Youth Club. Lydia is a lifelong member of SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth and Sokol Fort Worth. . . . , , ,

The East Bell County Corona Busters video is a product of local Temple, Texas, friends which began as an idea by businessman Billy Popelka. Billy enlisted the help of his friends, Jerry Haisler of the band Jerry Haisler and the Melody 5 and Earl Nottingham, a professional photographer.

“My original thought was, ‘Let’s do this fun thing to lighten the mood and center it on the good ‘ol (Czech or wannabe Czechs) boys and girls in East Bell County who can dress up with crazy props and drive up in this big ‘ol black Hummer to fight the coronavirus – east Bell County-style,’” Billy said. He envisioned the setting to be in front of historic Tom Sefcik Hall in Seaton.

“We’ll invite a couple of friends and just have fun with it,” he said. “But, let’s also have a serious message at the end thanking all of the medical staff, first responders, grocery store folks, truck drivers, postmen, etc.” He also wanted to do it right—by maintaining social distances, wearing masks . . . but also poking a little fun at all of that!

larger and larger. He asked Jerry Haisler to write a song, which he did to the tune of “In Heaven There Is No Beer.” Earl prepared for more and more audio and video equipment . . . and even a drone!

Billy invited more people, and “it became a production when we didn’t really mean for that to happen,” Billy said. The group ended up with 13 participants and two audio/video professionals.

“So after a couple of hours of getting the story right and trying to instruct the actors, we ended with a couple of hours of raw video and audio footage,” Jerry Haisler said. “It truly was the proverbial herding of cats. Earl was patient and directed the production well in spite of many storyline changes, retakes, doovers, outtakes . . . and breaks for kolaches, of course!” Earl then spent many hours editing and weaving the footage into a coherent, fun video.

The video was posted on YouTube and got immediate attention. It was quickly shared widely, and within a few day, it reached 25,000 views. All of the “actors” received positive feedback, calls, and texts.

Lodge 24, Cyclone member Shirley Hoelscher shared the video with Central Texas television station KWTX. Reporter Megan Vanselow then interviewed Billy, Earl, and Jerry. KWTX featured the video on its website and aired a nice news story. Megan then sent the story to her reporter friend who aired it in Virginia. KWTX’s parent company picked up the story, and it was featured on the national television show, “Full Court Press with Great Van Susteren.”

“It was an idea that took off well beyond our wildest dreams,” Billy added. “It was fun and a great diversion during these stressful times of uncertainty.”

The end of the video sends out a message in Czech to Czech friends all over.

“The message essentially says greetings from Texas, we are well here, we stand with you and everyone in solidarity, be safe and stay well,” Jerry explained.

So watch out . . . the East Bell County Coronabusters . . . they could be in your neighborhood, Jerry said. “By the way, the Coronabusters will work for beer and kolaches!”

Lodge 47, Seaton youth builds Lego set Dear Vestnik Readers I’m about to be five on May 21, 2020. I’m about to be a new youth club member. That makes me feel happy! I got the new SPJST tee-shirt. I really wanted an SPJST tee-shirt.

I have the Millennium Falcon Lego set. It took a long time to build it. I enjoyed building it. I got it for an early birthday present. We got a water slide.

At the March meeting, I handed out the youth schedule of events and deadlines, but I did not realize we would be hit with a worldwide pandemic just a few days later!

Easter was a different event not being with our own families and celebrating Christ’s empty tomb. But it is proof that no matter how bad things can be, there is always hope for a new and glorious day.

Our District Three Spring Meeting on Sunday, April 26 was canceled, but it did not stop the youth from entering a virtual decorated rock contest. They had to pull out their paint brushes, find the perfect rock, and take a picture of their creative idea before sending it to District Three Youth Counselor Mary Steinman and State Fraternal Director Frank Horak.

Join Hands Day was canceled by the Home Office even though we had two good ideas to do. But with COVID-19, we were unable to get it done!

With the virtual district rock idea, District Three may go with the same thing for our Youth Achievement Day that is planned for June 7. But I will be calling the youth encouraging them to get me the cards to send to DYC Mary Steinman by or before May 15. Maybe by then, Mary will know how we will conduct our YAD. Our youth meetings have consisted of family phone calls to keep each other connected and informed.

National Polka Festival in Ennis, which was scheduled for the weekend of May 23, has been canceled along with our district activity that was planned after the parade.

We are not sure how SFD Frank will do camp and State Youth Achievement Day (YAD). He is discussing this with the camp director and the DYCs on how to continue the tradition of camp so more information will be coming soon.

Let’s see how our worldly pandemic plays out.

The youth have canceled their Lodge 84 Spectacular event (it was to replace our traditional Princess Ball) on Saturday, August 8 at Sokol Dallas. Once we can get together socially and not be spreading this invisible virus, we will all get back together dancing and listening to the Moravians; along with conducting with our traditional prize drawing.

The Fraternal Council canceled its meeting and bingo which was planned

for Tuesday, June 2 at Barbec’s Restaurant. We will be waiting to see about our next meeting on October 6 at 6 p.m. where Lodge 84 will be the host. More details on whether we will or will not meet will be posted later in the Vestnik.

The Czech Culture Society has not yet met for planning the Heritage Day celebrations, but the date has been set for Sunday, October 18. The group meets in August to make the decisions.

More details will also be published in the Vestnik at a later date.

I hope this explains what the youth have been doing since COVID-19 has taken place upon us. I hope it will be soon that we all can get together again doing our traditional celebrations and get-togethers.

We miss you and respectfully appreciate all the nurses, doctors, first responders, and all those who are on the frontlines helping our country attack this deadly virus among our people. We pray for our members who are and have been affected by this virus.

If we continue to listen to Governor Abbott and our local officials, we can pull that curve down to where we can be together again.

Tips for family camping trips For nature lovers, perhaps nothing is more enjoyable than packing up the camping gear, traveling to a favorite campsite, and getting away from it all while sleeping under the stars. Such an experience can be transformative, turning first-time campers into lifelong enthusiasts.

The opportunity to turn youngsters into nature enthusiasts who can’t wait to spend time outside may be one reason why so many families go camping. A 2018 report Kampgrounds of America found that 52 percent of campers have children, making camping among the most popular and family-friendly ways to enjoy the great outdoors.

Camping with youngsters can help families make lasting memories. Parents who have never before taken their children camping may benefit from employing a few strategies to make the trip as fun as possible.

A night camping in the backyard won’t be exactly the same as a night in the woods, where wildlife, and particularly insects, may be less welcoming hosts. But a backyard camping night can acclimate children to their sleeping bags and their tents. A fun night sleeping under the stars in the backyard also may make kids more enthusiastic about an upcoming camping trip in the woods.

Go over safety early and often.

Use every opportunity to explain camping safety measures to youngsters in advance of your trip. Emphasize the importance of staying together in the woods, and teach youngsters how to identify potentially harmful plants like poison ivy, making sure they know to avoid coming into contact with these and other poisonous plants. Contact your local parks department, or the campground where you will be staying, for some additional advice on camping safety.

Let kids help when choosing camping equipment.

Youngsters may be more excited about camping if they’re allowed to choose certain equipment, including their sleeping bags and tents. Before

Dear Vestnik Readers, On Thursday, March 5, 2020, I participated in the Jourdanton Junior High track meeting, it was very rewarding on that day because I won first place for the eighth grade boys shot put. I am pictured with my first place ribbon. The next day, on Friday, March 6, I was excited to share my experience with my friends before leaving for spring break.

Unfortunately, this was our last track meet for the season because of the COVID-19 outbreak. I do miss my friends, but I am excited to be going into high school.

In Memoriam In Memory of Eddie Vrana Eddie Vrana, age 91, passed away on April 22, 2020, just 16 days short of his 92nd birthday.

He was born May 8, 1928, as the youngest child of Emil and Albina Vrana. His six siblings included Julius, William, and Emil, Jr. Vrana, Martha Hanslik, and Millie Berger (all deceased), and his Eddie Vrana only surviving sibling, Ollie Pospisil (age 97), who fondly describes seeing her baby brother “Ed” for the first time handed to her in a cracker box.

Eddie graduated from Moravia High School in 1945. He studied diesel engines in Chicago then returned home to help his mother and father with the family farm and cotton gin.

In 1947, Eddie married Frances Rosalie Vornsand (deceased). The Vrana family operated Vrana Gin in Moravia for more than 50 years. Eddie and Frances worked the farm and cotton gin until the gin closed in 1969. Eddie then started a water well drilling, repair and maintenance business that he subsequently operated in partnership with his sons Bruce and Dale Vrana.

Eddie is survived by sons Bruce Vrana (Zoe, spouse) and Dale Vrana (Claudia, spouse); grandsons Ty Vrana and Reid Vrana; and numerous nieces and nephews, who all adored their Uncle Eddie.

In 1971, Eddie served as Justice of the Peace for Precinct 2 and subsequently in 1978 was elected as County Commissioner where he proudly served Lavaca County for 26 years.

Eddie was a member of SPJST Lodge 23, Moravia, where he served as financial secretary/treasurer. He also received the Lifetime Achievement Award and other prestigious awards for his loyal SPJST service.

Eddie married Agnes “Dot” Little in St. Mary’s Church in Hallettsville on October 18, 1997, and they were blessed with 22 years of marriage and an ex-

tended “Little” family who shared in their life together. Their wedding ceremony was officiated by Reverend John C. Peters who also blessed their married lives in full circle by officiating Eddie’s graveside service in Moravia.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, a memorial service will be held at a date to be determined.

The family asks that donations be made to your favorite charity.

In Memory of Demetra Shiller Demetra Jean Shiller, 90, of Taylor, Texas, departed for her heavenly home on Friday, April 17, 2020, in Round Rock, Texas.

Demetra was born, April 16, 1930, in Taylor to Louis and Vlasta Stasny and lived her life in Taylor. Before her retirement, she worked at H-E-B in Taylor. Her time was spent with her husband doing all the things they loved: fishing, playing cards and Demetra Shiller dominoes with friends, and enjoying time with their family. She was a lifetime member of Taylor Brethren Church.

Demetra was a long-standing active member of SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville. She was preceded in death by her dear husband Gilbert of 69 years; her parents; brother Delmore Stasny; sister-in-law Bennie Stasny; brother and sisters-in-law Edwin and Sadie Turek and Leon and Lydie Shiller.

She is survived by daughters Gloria Wuthrich (Mike) and Karen Richter (Randall); sons Randy Shiller (Molly) and Larry Shiller (Beverly); granddaughters Melissa Smith (Richard), Tamara Alcoser (David), and Randa Shiller (Chris Brandt); grandson Bryan Wuthrich (Sherry); great-grandchildren Allison Wuthrich; Jabin, Peyton, and Khloe Alcoser; Pepper and Amelia

Brandt; and great-great-grandson Jaxson Wuthrich; brother John Stasny (Dottie Davis); sister-in-law Janie Stasny; and many nieces and nephews.

Demetra’s greatest joys were her family and friends. She always had a smile on her face and love in her heart.

She will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.

In Memory of Sadie Raschke Sadie Ann Dytrich Fuessel Raschke was born April 30, 1930, in Taylor, Texas, to Frank and Amelia Palla Dytrich.

Sadie passed away April 27, 2020 in Round Rock.

Sadie retired from the Austin Public School District where she worked in purchasing. She was a volSadie Raschke unteer for A Plus Federal Credit Union and actively volunteered for 27 years including serving on the board of directors.

Sadie loved to cook and bake and was best known for her dill pickles, chocolate brownies, and Italian cream cake. Her love of feeding others was shared at many church and office functions in her lifetime. She also loved football and watching the Cowboys and Longhorns.

She was also known to blast polka music very early in the morning and loved to go to local dances at the Sons of Hermann and SPJST halls.

She was a member of SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor.

Sadie was a rock in her faith and church family. If the doors were open, she was there. She loved Wednesday morning Bible study class and attended faithfully. She never wavered in her faith and was a living example of Jesus’ love. She never lost faith, but used it to carry her through life’s challenges and illness.

She was preceded in death by her

husbands Vernon Fuessel and Benhard Raschke; daughter-in-law Karen Fuessel; and stepson Larry Raschke and wife Ruby.

Sadie is survived by children Michael Fuessel of Georgetown, Cindy Fuessel Loftis (Dennis) of Pflugerville, Daniel Fuessel of Lott, and Betty Raschke Wissen (Sherwin) of Austin; grandchildren Michael Fuessel, II (Delana) of Royse City, Shannon Bernal (Eric) of San Antonio, John Loftis (Diana), Christopher Loftis (Erika), and Rebecca Loftis, of Round Rock, Kevin Wissen of Dripping Springs, and Collin Wissen and (Kim) of Cedar Park; great-grandchildren Parker, Avery, Autumn, Piper, and Arden Fuessel of Royse City, Camilla, Miranda, and Gunnar Perez, Kaily and Ellie Bernal of San Antonio, Joana, Olivia, and Finn Loftis of Round Rock, Blake Wissen of San Marcos, Paige Wissen of Dripping Springs, and Cole and Kassie Wissen of Cedar Park.

The family celebrated her life with a private service at Condra Funeral Home in Taylor with a memorial service planned later when it is safe to do so.

In Memory of Camille Bolcer Camille M. Bolcer, age 103, passed away Monday, March 23, 2020.

Camille was born on December 8, 1916, in Astoria, New York, to Victor and Camille Bruzek.

She moved from New York to River Oaks in 1960.

Camille was preceded in death by her husband Camille M. Bolcer Edward R. Bolcer; and sons Robert E. Bolcer and Richard G. Bolcer.

Survivors include grandsons Mike R. Bolcer and wife Barbara and Robert Bolcer; granddaughter Debra Marie Whitfield; five great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.

May she rest in eternal peace.

It was asked if it felt like rubbing salt into the wounds when you see friends post pictures of your deceased loved one? I thought about all those conversations that I had with friends, widows, and even people in my own personal circle. All I could say is “timing of posts” plays a part in our emotions and how we will perceive our feeds from friends.

First, when you open your social media platform choice, Facebook, Twitter, etc., and you see all the condolences of a loss before you have been notified, this can drum up some anger. No one likes to be the last to know. If this happens, please know people are using social media as a way to be a blanket notification process. This could be through Messenger, other apps, or just a direct post to a timeline. This method isn’t the best since we are used to the phone call. However, again, people are using these platforms to be the notification process. I encourage if you are expecting a loved one to pass away soon, contact the caregivers with the request that you would like to be notified by telephone.

If the posts are before the funeral has taken place, it is very common that mourners get upset when we see people posting pictures of your loved one. When we see photos of memories we shared, it can be painful. Maybe we were not there, and we feel sadness, regret, and even anger. People do not do it intentionally. I’m sure they are coming from a good place - possibly trying to give you photos that you could use for the DVD slide show/memorial DVD that the funeral home will make. It sometimes shows sympathy and that those people trying to relate.

If after the funeral has taken place and some time has lapsed, rejoice that someone is still thinking of your loved one and passing along their legacy. When you see your loved one’s photo in your newsfeed, rejoice that your loved one inspired people and has touched many lives. You will see photos of your loved one on your feed since people in your circle most likely know everyone or knew of that person to comment and share posts.

Grief is a tricky emotion and encompasses a wide range of emotions, even when you least expect it. It’s never a set course.

It’s not something people can graduate you from. It never gives you a definite time to recover, and for most, it’s a lifelong process.
