Dillon’s mom, Holly, talks to Dillon occasionally and says that he is in good spirits.

2020 SPJST Convention Supreme Lodge members will meet on Tuesday, April 21 via teleconference for their quarterly meeting. One of the items on the agenda is the decision on whether to postpone the 33rd SPJST Convention which is currently set for June 14 to 16 in Killeen. As soon as a decision is made, we will share it on our website, social media, and in the Vestnik.

Due to the current pandemic, memorial services are pending. A private committal service of burial was held at Saints Cyril and Methodius Cemetery in Marak. Mr. Chandler’s obituary appears on page 34. With the rapid development of COVID-19, efforts have been taken at the SPJST Home Office to help ensure the health and safety of our employees, members, and communities. Like many other businesses, we have arranged telecommuting for several of our employees, further enhancing our efforts to maintain social distancing within the confines of our building. The SPJST Home Office at 520 North Main Street in Temple is currently closed to walk-in traffic; however, the staff remains ready to assist you by telephone at 254-773-1575 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. It isn’t business as usual; however, we have a great team and the work is getting done.

As noted in the March 23 Vestnik, SPJST issued a directive on March 16 requesting that all SPJST lodge and district meetings, youth functions, and lodge events be canceled or postponed through May 16. In the event that it becomes necessary to extend SPJST closure dates, you will be notified via social media and through the Vestnik. Lodge and district leaders will also be notified via email.

My sincere thanks to our lodge and

district leaders for taking responsibility and readily implementing these cancellations. In many cases, this has involved the cancellation of private rentals, special events, and other revenue-generating activities. Across the nation, nonprofits that raise a large portion of their operating revenue through like venues are facing similar losses. To that end, many will lose money in the process but social distancing saves lives and will help enable the health-care system to keep up and help those most at risk.

The pandemic, which has disrupted commerce and business around the world, presents unique challenges for our fraternal order. Already, delegates to the 2020 SPJST Convention have been asking if the convention has been canceled or postponed. As of this writing, the Convention is still scheduled to take place June 14 to 16 at Killeen Civic and Conference Center in Killeen, Texas; however, this, too, is likely to change. Various items related to the convention — including its possible rescheduling — will be addressed when the Supreme Lodge meets by teleconference on April 21. The Supreme Lodge will also be reviewing matters related to Camp Kubena and SPJST Summer Camp. As soon as something is decided, it will be posted on the spjst.org website and Facebook page. Delegates will also be notified by US mail.

Readers Write ✍ Reader seeks family information: Fojtasek, Studnicny, Studney I read in last week’s Věstník about the death of Mary Jo Fojtasek. My great aunt Kamila was married to a Mr. Fojtasek (I can’t remember his first name).

They lived on a farm close to Rogers, Texas. We visited them in the summer when I was a child. Kamila was the sister of my grandfather, Slava P. Reader urges Texans to follow Czech lead in wearing face masks to combat COVID-19 spread Hi there.

As many Czechs in Texas know, the Czech Republic has led the world in mandating the wearing of homemade masks and non-N95 masks while in public. In doing so, they have managed to flatten the COVID-19 curve. In other words, I think they stopped the curve from happening in the first place.

I have seen articles where women in Texas are making homemade cloth masks. Many people are searching for these masks and trying to buy non-N95

masks. I would be interested in helping any group(s) of women making the masks. Specifically, I can help with coordinating an effort to sell/give these masks to people in Texas.

We are all a free people as long as we practice freedom in a way that does not interfere with other’s right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness.

SPJST Reaches Milestone of $1 Billion Life Insurance In Force Dear Members, My thoughts and prayers are with each of you during these unprecedented times that we are living in. The safety of our members and sales agents and their families are of my utmost concern.

Please follow the advice and directions of our medical directors and the directions of our state and local governments.

This pandemic will test our resolve and determination to beat COVID-19. I am certain that if we all do our part, we will defeat it.

SPJST Life Insurance and Annuity Extra Pages 8 to 16 of this week’s Věstník provide a summary of general insurance information and of the insurance plans and annuity programs available to qualifying SPJST members and prospective members. Face-to-Face Meeting With Agent No Longer Required The SPJST Insurance Department no longer requires a face-to-face meeting to purchase our life insurance and annuity products. This can now be accomplished through email. Sales agents can send the illustration and application to members and prospective member via email.

Once the member/prospective member has completed the application and returned it to a sales agent, the agent will call the applicant to obtain their private information (driver’s license number, date of birth, financial information, etc).

The sales agent will then send the application to us using the secure new sales agent webpage.

Annual Review Now is a great time to contact your sales agent to complete an annual re-

view. Again, we do not require a faceto-face meeting with a sales agent to complete the annual review. An agent will email the annual review forms to the member, and the member will return a signed copy to the agent to submit to the Home Office.

Needs Analysis Members are encouraged to visit our website at spjst.org where you can complete a needs analysis for the amount of life insurance you should own. The Life Insurance Needs Calculator is available under the “products” tab on the website.

The calculator will help answer these questions: “How much will be needed at death to meet immediate obligations?” and “How much future income is needed to sustain the household?” This is a very good tool, and I hope you will visit the website and use it to calculate your life insurance needs.

————— DIFFERENT TYPES OF LIFE INSURANCE ————— The money your beneficiary receives can help cover expenses and ensure that your family is not burdened with debt.

Make sure that you fully understand any policy you’re considering and that you’re comfortable with the company, agent, and product. When choosing a product, follow the tips below:

What are the different types of insurance?

There are two basic types of life insurance: permanent and term. Permanent insurance pays your beneficiary whenever you may die; term insurance pays your beneficiary if you die during a specific period of time. The money your beneficiary receives can help cover expenses and ensure that your family is not burdened with debt.

What is permanent insurance?

Permanent (cash value) insurance provides lifelong protection as long as premiums are paid. It may build up cash value over time, which grows tax deferred. With all permanent policies, the cash value is different from the face amount. The face amount is the money that will be paid to your beneficiary if you die. Cash value takes time to grow.

But after you’ve held the policy for several years, its cash value can offer you several options: • You can borrow from the insurer using your cash value as collateral.

• You can get the loan even if you don’t have a good credit history. If you don’t repay the loan (including interest), it will reduce the amount paid to your beneficiaries after your death.

• You can use the cash value to pay your premiums, which would create a loan (interest would continue to accrue), or to buy more coverage.

• You can exchange the policy by using the cash value for an annuity that will provide a steady stream of retirement income for life or a specified period.

• You can cancel (surrender) the policy and receive the cash value in a lump sum. You will pay taxes on the value that exceeds what you’ve paid in premiums.

Basic types of cash value insurance Whole life offers premiums that generally stay fixed over the life of the policy, a fixed death benefit, and cash value that grows at a fixed rate of return.

Tips on buying life insurance

• After you’ve bought an insurance policy, you may have a “free-look” period—usually 10 days after you receive the policy—when you can change your mind. During that period, read your policy carefully. If you decide not to keep it, the company will cancel the policy and give you an appropriate refund. Information about the free look period is in your contract.

Universal life gives you flexibility in setting premium payments and the death benefit. Changes must be made within certain guidelines set by the policy; to increase a death benefit, the insurer usually requires evidence of continued good health. A universal life policy can have a variable component.

• Premium costs that can be fixed or flexible to meet individual financial needs.

What is term insurance?

Term insurance provides protection for a defined period of time—from 10, 15, 20, or even 30 years—and pays benefits only if you die during that period.

Term insurance is often used to cover financial obligations that will disappear over time, such as tuition or mortgage payments. Premiums for term insurance either can be fixed for the length of the term or can increase at a point specified in the policy. They also can be less expensive than for a cash value policy.

Some term policies can be renewed at the end of a term. However, premium rates will usually increase upon renewal.

To qualify for renewal at the lowest rates, many policies require evidence of insurability (continued good health). At the end of a term, you also may be able to convert the policy to a permanent policy.

Term policies don’t usually build up a cash value.

Cash Value Insurance Disadvantages • Cash value insurance is designed to be kept for the long term; therefore, cancelling a cash value policy after only a few years can be expensive.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of each type of insurance?

Cash Value Insurance Advantages • Lifelong protections as long as the premiums are paid.

• Cash value, which can be: used to pay premiums or buy more coverage; borrowed against; converted to an annuity; or surrendered for cash.

Term Insurance Advantages • A policy can cover financial obligations that will disappear over time, such as a mortgage or college expenses.

• Premiums are generally lower than those for cash value insurance at younger ages.

Term Insurance Disadvantages • Provides protection for a specific period of time, not for life.

• Renewing coverage at the end of the term generally means premiums will increase.

• Keep your life insurance policy with your other financial records or legal papers, or anywhere your survivors are likely to look for it. However, don’t keep your policy in your safe deposit box. In most states, boxes are sealed temporarily on the death of the owner, delaying a settlement when funds may be needed most.

• Contact your original company, agent, or financial adviser before cancelling your current policy to buy a new one. If your health has declined, you may no longer be insurable at affordable rates.

If you replace one cash value policy with another, the cash value of the new policy may be relatively small for several years.

• If you have a complaint about your insurance agent or company, contact the customer service division of your insurance company. If you’re still dissatisfied, contact your state insurance department.

• Review your policy from time to time or when a major event occurs in your life—such as a birth, job promotion, divorce, remarriage, or retirement—to be sure your coverage is adequate and your beneficiaries are correctly named.

• Policies don’t usually build up a cash value.

re you and your family adequately covered? Unless you deal with life insurance regularly, it can be an intimidating and sometimes difficult subject to discuss.

If you haven’t purchased insurance in a while, you may be surprised at the many affordable life insurance options available through your local SPJST sales agent. The following list provides a brief summary of the insurance options that are available: 10-Year Term. A modern term product issued to ages 18 through

75. Premiums are guaranteed for 10 years and can be renewed annually after that to age 95. The death benefit is guaranteed level to age 95. Renewals are guaranteed, even if your health is not perfect!

Convertible to permanent coverage prior to age 65 with no health requirements.

15-Year Term. Just like the 10-Year Term, except premiums are

level for 15 years. Issued to ages 18 through 70. Convertible to permanent coverage prior to age 65 with no health requirements.

Paid Up at 65 Whole Life. You are covered to age 100, but

you only pay premiums to age 65. Cash values are available and continue to grow to age 100. Enjoy your retirement without life insurance premiums!

10 Pay Life. A whole life product designed for both young and

mature applicants with premiums payable for 10 years. Issued to ages 0 through 70.

20 Pay Life. A whole life product designed for both young and

mature applicants with premiums payable for 20 years. Issued to ages 0 through 60.

Single Pay Whole Life. A whole life product available with

just one premium. The certificate is then paid-up. Issued to ages 0 through 80.

20-Year Term. Level premiums for 20 years (guaranteed level

Universal Life 3. A flexible protection plan issued to ages 0

for 10). Issued to ages 18 through 65. Just the thing for young families to provide benefits for the family while the children are growing up if the breadwinner dies. Convertible to permanent coverage prior to age 65 with no health requirements.

Annuities. Both qualified (IRA) and non-qualified are offered

30-Year Term. A very sensible term product! Premiums are level

for 30 years (guaranteed level for 20). Issued to ages 18 through 55.

It is excellent for mortgage cancellation as well as providing inexpensive coverage before retirement. Convertible to permanent coverage prior to age 65 with no health requirements.

Whole Life. A whole life product designed for both young and mature applicants that offers affordable premiums and builds cash value.

Final Expense. A whole life plan designed to help with your final

expense needs whether you are in perfect health or even have health concerns (not guaranteed issue). Coverage is available on a modified, graded or level death benefit basis. The level death benefit has inflation protection available, to cover final expenses as they increase each year. Available from ages 40 to 80 with premiums payable for life or as a one-time single premium.

Should I buy life insurance through work or on my own?

This isn’t always an either/or question. The answer is often “both.”

Buying through work. Typically, your employer's "basic" life insurance benefit provides coverage equal to one or two times your annual income. Many employers offer the option of purchasing supplemental coverage, often through an automatic payroll deduction. This is convenient, and you may be able to obtain the extra coverage at a higher rate without having to answer any questions about your health, a big plus if insurability is a concern.

Getting Started As you prepare to buy a life insurance policy, evaluate your ongoing and future financial needs. To begin, ask yourself some basic questions: Why do I need to buy life insurance?

If someone depends on you financially, the likelihood is that you need life insurance. Life insurance provides cash to your family after you die. If you buy a variable annuity, your money can be invested in stock or bond (or other) mutual funds. In recent years, annuity companies have created

various types of “floors” that limit the extent of investment decline from an increasing reference point. For example, the annuity may offer a feature that guarantees your investment will never fall below its value on its most recent policy anniversary.

Tax-free transfers among investment options In contrast to mutual funds and other investments made with “after-tax money,” with annuities there are no tax consequences if you change how your funds are invested. This can be particularly valuable if you are using a strategy called “rebalancing,” which is recommended by many financial advisors. Under rebalancing, you shift your investments periodically to return them to the proportions that you determine represent the risk/return combination most appropriate for your situation.

Lifetime income A lifetime immediate annuity converts an investment into a stream of payments that last as long as you do. In concept, the payments come from three “pockets”: Your investment, investment earnings and money from a pool of people in your group who do not live as long as actuarial tables forecast.

It’s the pooling that’s unique to annuities, and it’s what enables annuity companies to be able to guarantee you a lifetime income.

Benefits to your heirs There is a common misconception about annuities that goes like this: if you start an immediate lifetime annuity and die soon after that, the insurance company keeps all

A guaranteed period commits the insurance company to continue payments after you die to one or more beneficiaries you designate; the payments continue to the end of the stated guaranteed period—usually 10 or 20 years (measured from when you started receiving the annuity payments). Moreover, annuity benefits that pass to beneficiaries don’t go through probate and aren’t governed by your will.

How are annuities different from life insurance?

Both annuities and life insurance should be considered in your long-term financial plan. While both include death benefits, you buy life insurance in the event you die too soon and an annuity in case you live too long.

Why should I consider purchasing an annuity?

Annuities can serve many useful purposes. If you are in a saving-money stage of life, a deferred annuity can: • Help you meet your retirement income goals. Employer-sponsored plans such as a 401(k), 403(b) or Keogh are an important part of planning for retirement. However, contributions to these plans and to IRAs are limited, and they might not add up to enough for the retirement income you need, especially if you started saving for retirement late or had contributions interrupted— perhaps due to job changes and/or family responsibilities. Moreover, your social security and defined-benefit pension (if you have one) may provide less than you need to retire. Remember that the purchasing power of defined-benefit pension income is eroded by inflation.

Fixed annuities, in particular, offer a unique asset class—an investment that is guaranteed not to decrease and that will actually increase at a specified interest rate (and, often, potentially more). The guarantees are supported by the claims-paying ability of the insurer.

When you eventually withdraw money from the annuity (which could be many years after the rebalancing), you pay tax then at the ordinary income rate.

If you are in a need-income stage of life, an immediate annuity can: • Help protect you against outliving your assets. Social security pays retirement income for as long as you live, as do definedbenefit pension plans. But the only other source of income available that continues indefinitely is an immediate annuity.

• Help protect your assets from creditors.

Generally the most that creditors can access is the payments from an immediate annuity as they’re made, since the money you gave the insurance company now belongs to the company. Some state statutes and court decisions also protect some or all of the payments from those annuities.

The different types of annuities: Fixed vs. Variable In a fixed annuity, the insurance company guarantees the principal and a minimum rate of interest. In other words, as long as the insurance company is financially sound, the money you have in a fixed annuity will grow and will not drop in value.

The growth of the annuity’s value and/or the benefits paid may be fixed at a dollar amount or by an interest rate, or they may grow by a specified formula. The growth of the annuity’s value and/or the benefits paid does not depend directly or entirely on the performance of the investments the insurance company makes to support the annuity. Some fixed annuities credit a higher interest rate than the minimum, via a policy dividend that may be declared by the company’s board of directors, if the company’s actual investment, expense and mortality experience is more favorable than was expected. Fixed annuities are regulated by state insurance departments.

Money in a variable annuity is invested in a fund—like a mutual fund but one open only to investors in the insurance company’s variable life insurance and variable annuities. The fund has a particular investment objective, and the value of your money in a variable annuity—and the amount of money to be paid out to you—is determined by the investment performance (net of expenses) of that fund. Most variable annuities are structured to offer investors

many different fund alternatives. Variable annuities are regulated by state insurance departments and the federal Securities and Exchange Commission.

Types of Fixed Annuities An equity-indexed annuity is a type of fixed annuity, but looks like a hybrid. It credits a minimum rate of interest, just as a fixed annuity does, but its value is also based on the performance of a specified stock index—usually computed as a fraction of that index’s total return.

A market-value-adjusted annuity is one that combines two desirable features—the ability to select and fix the time period and interest rate over which your annuity will grow, and the flexibility to withdraw money from the annuity before the end of the time period selected. This withdrawal flexibility is achieved by adjusting the annuity’s value, up or down, to reflect the change in the interest rate “market” (that is, the general level of interest rates) from the start of the selected time period to the time of withdrawal.

and investment changes for payout at a later time. The payout might be a very long time; deferred annuities for retirement can remain in the deferred stage for decades.

An immediate annuity is designed to pay an income one time-period after the immediate annuity is bought. The time period depends on how often the income is to be paid. For example, if the income is monthly, the first payment comes one month after the immediate annuity is bought.

Fixed period vs. lifetime annuities A fixed period annuity pays an income for a specified period of time, such as 10 years. The amount that is paid doesn’t depend on the age (or continued life) of the person who buys the annuity; the payments depend instead on the amount paid into the annuity, the length of the payout period, and (if it’s a fixed annuity) an interest rate that the insurance company believes it can support for the length of the pay-out period.

A lifetime annuity provides income for the remaining life of a person (called the “annuitant”). A variation of lifetime annuities continues income until the second one of two annuitants dies. No other type of financial product can promise to do this. The amount that is paid depends on the age of the annuitant (or ages, if it’s a two-life annuity), the amount paid into the annuity, and (if it’s a fixed annuity) an interest rate that the insurance company believes it can support for the length of the expected pay-out period.

With a “pure” lifetime annuity, the payments stop when the annuitant dies, even if that’s a very short time after they began.

Many annuity buyers are uncomfortable at this possibility, so they add a guaranteed period—essentially a fixed period annuity—to their lifetime annuity. With this combination, if you die before the fixed period ends, the income continues to your beneficiaries until the end of that period.

Qualified vs. nonqualified annuities A qualified annuity is one used to invest and disburse money in a tax-favored retirement plan, such as an IRA or Keogh plan or plans governed by Internal Revenue Code sections, 401(k), 403(b), or 457. Under the terms of the plan, money paid into the annuity (called “premiums” or “contributions”) is not included in taxable income for the year in which it is paid in. All other tax provisions that apply to nonqualified annuities also apply to qualified annuities.

A nonqualified annuity is one purchased separately from, or “outside of,” a tax-favored retirement plan. Investment earnings of all annuities, qualified and non-qualified, are tax-deferred until they are withdrawn; at that point they are treated as taxable income (regardless of whether they came from selling capital at a gain or from dividends).

Single premium vs. flexible premium annuities A single premium annuity is an annuity funded by a single payment. The payment might be invested for growth for a long period of time—a single premium deferred annuity—or invested for a short time, after which payout begins—a single premium immediate annuity. Single premium annuities are often funded by rollovers or from the sale of an appreciated asset.

A flexible premium annuity is an annuity that is intended to be funded by a series of payments. Flexible premium annuities are only deferred annuities; that is, they are designed to have a significant period of payments into the annuity plus investment growth before any money is withdrawn from them.

What are surrender fees?

If you take money out of an annuity, there may be a penalty called a surrender fee or a withdrawal charge. This fee is higher if you withdraw funds within the first years of an annuity contract. The penalty, however, drops gradually each year. Since immediate annuities are purchased to provide income, they usually can’t be “surrendered” and will therefore not be subjected to a fee.

A typical surrender fee schedule could be: • 7 percent if you withdraw funds in the first year, • 6 percent in the second year, • 5 percent in the third year, • 4 percent in the fourth year, • 3 percent in the fifth year, • 2 percent in the sixth year, • 1 percent in the seventh year, and • 0 in the eighth year and beyond.

The purpose of the fee is to allow the insurer enough time to recover its expenses, largely commissions, in setting up the annuity contract. It also serves to discourage annuity buyers from using deferred annuities as short-term investments for quick cash.

Some contracts may permit you to pull out a portion of the funds annually, usually up to 10 percent without a surrender charge.

If this option is important to you, ask your insurance agent or company representative about this before deciding to invest your money in a specific annuity. Also, ask if there may be any other fees or charges.

What is an SPJST Annuity?

An annuity is a contract between the member and SPJST. The object of an annuity is cash accumulation. Annuities are not life insurance. An annuity has a beneficiary provision, but the only benefit paid at death is the total of the funds accumulated at that point, unless other provisions have been made.

The member contributes funds to the SPJST annuity in lump sums or premiums over time. These funds accumulate tax-deferred compound interest until a specified maturity date. At maturity, the member can receive the funds either in a lump sum, payments over a certain time period, or even equal payments guaranteed for the rest of the member’s life.

SPJST Annuities offer benefits not found in other tax-qualified plans {such as 401(k) plans}. First, there is no IRS contribution limitation. SPJST members can contribute any amount (within reason) to an annuity. Second, SPJST annuities do not require vesting. SPJST guarantees that the total amount of funds (principal plus interest) will be paid directly to the beneficiary upon the death of the member in the accumulation period.

SPJST Flexible Annuities are used to fund Individual Retirement Arrangements (IRA), both Traditional and Roth.

More IRA information follows in this section.

Two Types of Annuities are available: Deferred or Immediate Deferred annuities enable the member to contribute funds through tax-deferred accumulation over a period of time. This is called the accumulation period. The accumulation period continues until the maturity date, at which time the payout period begins. The maturity date is usually set at age 65 or later, but can be changed at any time.

After the maturity date, the payout period is when SPJST distributes the accumulated funds to the member according to the member’s wishes, whether it is a lump sum, distributions for a set period of time, or lifetime options that the member cannot outlive.

SPJST has three deferred annuities:

Flexible Premium Annuity 5-Year Annuity 10-Year Annuity The Flexible Premium Annuity accumulates interest that is reviewed quarterly, but can never go below a guaranteed minimum rate. The 5-Year Annuity and 10-Year Annuity have guaranteed locked-in rates for a full five years or 10 years.

Immediate annuities work just like deferred annuities except there is no accumulation period. The member contributes a lump sum of funds ($10,000 minimum), and the payout period begins immediately.

Eligibility Requirements SPJST members (life insurance certificate holders) are eligible and may purchase an annuity with a $100 minimum contribution.  Exceptions Any individual under 70 years of age must apply for an SPJST life insurance certificate, but if uninsurable or rated above standard, the individual may become a member with the purchase of an annuity in an amount of $1,000 minimum.

This option typically pays the lowest net distribution amount of all lifetime options.

• Joint and Survivor Option This option pays distributions to two people (usually couples) for as long as both shall live. When the first person dies, the survivor continues to receive distributions for the rest of the survivor’s life. When the survivor dies, distributions cease. Depending on the option taken, the survivor may continue to receive the full distribution, twothirds or one-half of the distribution.

• Life with Certain Period This option pays lifetime distributions to the annuitant, but if the annuitant dies within a specified period stated in the agreement (5 years, 10 years, 20, years, etc.), the annuitant’s beneficiary would continue to receive the same distribution for the remainder of that period. Example: If the annuitant chose Life with 20 Years Certain and died four years later, the annuitant’s beneficiary would continue to receive the distributions for the remaining 16

Lifetime Option Taxation Taxation on a Lifetime Option is based on the exclusion ratio. It is based on funds expected to be received by the time the annuitant reaches life expectancy according to IRS tables. Funds paid in excess of this ratio are considered taxable income. If the annuitant lives to the pre-determined life expectancy age, then all future distributions will be considered 100 percent taxable income in the year received.

How much should I invest in an annuity?

Unlike a 401(k) or an IRA, there are no limits on the amount that you can invest in an annuity.

Whether you’re considering a deferred or immediate annuity, the amount of money you should consider putting into an annuity depends on: • Your immediate actual and potential financial needs • Your long-term financial goals • Your current savings/investment portfolio • The range of alternatives available to you

Of these, the most important is your immediate actual and potential financial needs. If you’re buying a deferred annuity and you have a sudden need for cash, you can usually withdraw a small amount without penalty. However, you’ll likely pay a penalty if you make a large withdrawal within a few years after you’ve bought the annuity. If you’re buying an immediate annuity, you usually can’t get any more than the regular payments, no matter how badly you need cash. However, if you have other sources of cash that are sufficient for any emergency or unforeseen needs, then the immediate needs criterion is satisfied and the other criteria become more important.

What is a free look provision?

Most state insurance departments require insurance companies to provide a “free-look” period after you have purchased the policy. It is typically a 10-day span in which you can pull out of the contract and obtain a refund based on contract terms or state law. You should use this time to review

the policy, ask your insurance agent or stockbroker any additional questions and make a final decision as to whether the annuity you selected was right for you.

President Henrietta Veselka called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. All officers were in attendance. Our honored guest was District Six Director and Supreme Lodge Chair Karen Kaspar. Minutes of the November 25, 2019, meeting were presented in the January 27, 2020, Věstník. Earlene Lorfing made a motion, seconded by Erline Janik, to accept the minutes as presented. Motion carried.

Treasurer’s report was given by Carolyn Tobola. Anton Machacek made a motion, seconded by Arlene Marshall, to accept the treasurer’s report as presented. Motion carried.

Henrietta reported on correspondence that was received. The State Straight Domino Tournament is Saturday, March 7; the State 42 Domino Tournament is Saturday, April 4; 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive; and a

formal letter was received from Tamara Gettys notifying our lodge that the Home Office has successfully filed our e-postcard for tax year 2019.

Henrietta reviewed membership premium guidelines. Karen reported on her first meeting as Supreme Lodge Chair.

She also reported she is stepping down as District Six Director and stated the qualifications of Annie Vahalik. We will miss you, Karen. You have been such a delight to work with. Thank you for always so willingly helping us. Our prayers are for you and your family in all that the future has to hold for you.

Karen also stated to read the Věstník referencing the convention highlights.

The district spring meeting will be held at St. Mary’s Parish Hall in Hallettsville on Sunday, March 15 starting at 11 a.m.

The meeting will be hosted by Lodges 4, Hallettsville and 63, Sweet Home. Anton volunteered to bring the door prize.

Join Hands Day will be held on Friday, May 1 at 2:30 p.m. at Parkview Manor Nursing Facility in Weimar. A motion was made by Earlene Lorfing, seconded by Erline Janik, to join New Bielau Hermann Sons Life 205 for this project. Games will be played with the residents. It was requested to bring two to three dozen cookies. (Editor’s Note: The service project has been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.)

Bridget Hrachovy of Schulenburg Girl Scouts Troop talked with Henrietta concerning joining their troop for Join Hands Day. This was tabled until the May meeting.

Lodge 8, Weimar member Jeffrey Alan Cernoch will receive recognition for his long-standing membership with our Society, and he will receive his 50year pin. Henrietta will notify the Home Office to send his pin directly to him.

It was decided to send $30 to SPJST Věstník Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny before April 1 for an advertisement for our lodge in the Official Convention Souvenir Program Book. This will be for an eighth-page ad (3.75 inches wide by 2.5 inches high).

We are letting Melanie and her expert staff come up with a design.

Our Christian sympathy is extended to Rosie Shumbera on the loss of her daughter, Maxine Billeck. May our God keep all of you in His most tender care.

Birthdays since our last meeting are Earlene Lorfing on January 11th and Arlene Marshall on February 6th. Anniversary was Karen and Leroy Kaspar on January 3 - married 44 years. Congratulations to all for many more happy birthdays and anniversaries.

Lodge 9, Snook discusses hall repairs, renovations The Wednesday, March 11, 2020, meeting of SPJST Lodge 9, Snook was called to order by President Donnie Hejl at 6 p.m. Josef Orsak led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Roll of officers was called. Minutes from the February meeting were approved. Hall manager, treasurer, and fraternal reports were given.

Under old business, the District One Spring Meeting which was scheduled for April 19 has been postponed. Motions were passed to send $100 for the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund, to run a full page ad in the SPJST Convention souvenir program book, and to accept new member Cecilia Guzman.

Lodge 4 Hallettsville welcomes new member Lodge 4, Hallettsville welcomes new member Harlyn Divae Hearn. Harlyn is 14 months old and the daughter of Billy and Holly (Scott) Hearn of Hallettsville. Her mother Holly, big brother Braxton, and grandmother Diane Marie (Holly) Hadley are also members of Lodge 4. Harlyn’s great-grandparents are the late Alphonse and Viola Holly of Lodge 4, Hallettsville.

The youth club meeting was held at the dog shelter. Activities planned are the food pantry on March 14, District Two Spring Meeting on March 15, Youth Leaders Workshop on March 20 to 22 at Camp Kubena in Ledbetter, Critter Crusader fundraiser on March 21 at American Legion at 5 p.m., and youth are making a blanket The fraternal report was the SPJST State Straight Domino Tournament on March 7, District Two Spring Meeting on March 15, State 42 Domino Tournament on April 4, and 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive ends March 31.

Under old business, the slab is to be completed by March 31. Metal for the building is being delivered and work will be completed, weather permitting.

We are still working on bids for other

Sister Dana McAdams read a letter from Controller Roy Vajdak for a transfer from Lodge 167, Penelope to Lodge 66, requested by Mary E. Kyle. She was accepted to Lodge 66.

Brother John Engelke received a letter from Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek concerning the coronavirus.

For the meeting on April 27, 2020, Brother John Engelke will purchase the food.

FAC Brother Douglas Galler received a letter from State Fraternal Director Frank Horak stating upcoming events.

Sister Dorothy Veselka gave the report on cards she sent. A get well card was sent to Sister Mary Lou Urbanek, who had cataract surgery and to Steven Nors who has been very ill for several months.

She sent sympathy cards to Keith and Phyllis Hoester on the death of her father David Wetzel and to the families of James Yates and Johnnie Holick on their deaths.

Sister Diana Engelke read resolutions of sympathy on the deaths of James Yates and Johnnie Holick. May they rest in peace.

Lodge 79 Corpus Christi honors longtime members at March meeting

For his Eagle Scout project, Lodge 28, East Bernard member JR Schauer repainted a sign that welcomes everyone to the community. The large sign reads, “Welcome To East Bernard - A Good Place To Live” and is visible as you drive into the East Bernard community. On Sunday, March 15, 2020, SPJST Lodge 79, Corpus Christi honored its 50- and 75-year members with a catered meal of chicken fried steak and sides.

After the meal, President Mark Rebecek called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance. On the sick list were Judy Majek recovering from hip surgery and Armando Perez recovering from surgery. We wish them both a speedy recovery.

Polly who attended our meeting. Bob gave a very informative talk. President Rebecek also introduced guest Regina House and husband James from Lodge 202, Jourdanton. Regina is a candidate for District Seven Director. She gave a nice talk about her qualifications for district director. It was an honor having these members at our meeting.

Secretary Virginia Rebecek read the February minutes, and they were approved. Treasurer Larry Elzner gave the February financial report, and it was also approved.

The fraternal report was given by Vice President/Fraternal Activities Coordinator Jerry Sijansky. He asked all to start turning in their hours for fraternal acts.

Under new business, President Rebecek introduced 75-year member Albin Kucera and presented him with a 75year pin. President Rebecek also introduced 50-year member Dennis Elzner and presented him with a 50-year pin.

The paratroopers were a special group of people, and we have had the privilege of working with them and their families over many years.

Sincerely, Sidney Kacir ••• Dear SPJST Members, I am delighted that all of you gave to Scott School to remember Calvin. He enjoyed playing with the children before school began and at noon so that the teachers would not have to do that. His thinking of the library was a very important affair to watch and listen to the children choose and read the books. He did love Scott!

When I began writing the letters, I had no paper so I looked in his big desk to find a lot of his own device. There, I found a lot of choices he had made and had printed. The point is: Can you read through all the paratroopers? He was interested in what he did second in the Army, which he joined the day he graduated form high school in Dallas.

Through testing, he was found to be good at radio code, and he spent one and one half years with that and helped to break the German code. The Germans did not know that. Then as the European war was ending, he was to be sent to study Jap code. He said, “No thanks, I volunteer for the parachute infantry!”

That took only one month training, and he sailed to and through the Pacific to jump in Louzon, P.H.I. He said that every jumper had so much to carry to and onto the plane and guns that each one had to be helped by another to get in and out.

Your nice group of eight people gave a total of $860 in memory of Calvin. He would love that! Calvin and I have loved getting to so many parties and fun things at SPJST. Cordially, Julia Whatley —SPJST—

Lodge 88, Houston cancels April events In light of everything that is happening at this time with the coronavirus pandemic, Lodge 88, Houston has made the difficult decision to cancel events and meetings through April. This includes bingo and the monthly members’ meeting scheduled for April 20 when we were to recognize our 50- and 75-year members. Lodge 117, Robstown visits residents during holidays at Windsor home Dear Readers, In October 2019, SPJST Lodge 117, Robstown officers President Frances McDonald, Vice President/Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Sijansky, and Treasurer Kathryn Marek went to Windsor Nursing Home for the birthdays. We also went in November. In December, Frank Sijansky and wife Joanne went to the Christmas party, where Frank was Santa for the birthday party. Frances McDonald was in Ohio, and I went to Allen, Texas, to visit my daughter and son-in-law. Frances McDonald and Kathryn Marek went to Windsor Nursing Home in January and February. We also went to the valentine party where the king, queen, prince, and princess were crowned.

Lodge 151, Wharton honors longtime members SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton held its quarterly meeting on Monday, March 9, 2020, at Wharton Depot Museum. A light meal was served at 6:30 p.m. to seven members and two guests. David Bucek led the prayer before the meal.

President Macha called the meeting to order at 7:12 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and a moment of silence was held for our departed members. The roll was called, and all of our officers were present. Special guests were District Six Director Karen Kaspar and Regional General Agent (RGA) Carolina Covarrubia.

The December minutes and treasurer’s report were handed out to the members. After they had been reviewed, Jo Ann Preisler made a motion to accept them. David Bucek seconded the motion. Motion passed.

Treasurer Carolyn Bucek read a thank you note from Johnnie Hoffman for the contribution our lodge made to the SPJST District Six Cemetery Organization to help pay for the Velehrad granite sign. She then read a thank you note from S.P.J.S.T Senior Living Center in Needville for the donation we made to its Christmas activity fund.

Secretary Janie Bucek reported two death claims had been paid. Next, she stated we have two 50-year members.

They are Donald Stavinoha and Dennis Zbranek, Jr. We did not have any 75year members. She then announced we have four new members. Last of all, she said she received a letter from the Home Office about placing an ad in the 2020 Official Convention Souvenir Program Book. Our lodge voted to place a quarter page ad in the convention book.

Janie then gave the fraternal coordinator’s activity report. She announced the SPJST District Six Spring Meeting will be held on Sunday, March 15 at St. Mary’s parish hall. Next, she said the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive will end on March 31. She then reported Join Hands Day will be held on May 2.

She also stated the SPJST State Straight Domino Tournament will be Saturday, April 4 at the SPJST Home Office.

David Bucek gave the cemetery report. He stated the new limestone road still has not been completed in the Velehrad Cemetery.

Kaspar also said she will let us know when and where the delegates’ meeting will be held.

Birthday honorees for January, February, and March were Carolyn Bucek, Charlotte Bucek, Janie Bucek, Carolina Covarrubia, Karen Kaspar, Gerald Macha, and Jo Ann Preisler. Each birthday honoree received a gift from the lodge.

Ennis Sewing Circle Ennis Sewing Circle met on Thursday, March 12, 2020, at the Sokol Club Room with 21 members.

About five of our members brought small quilt frames, and members brought throw quilts that we all quilted.

They were all so pretty. Thank you all who brought frames. We had a nice day quilting.

We quilted till lunch, President Liz led us in grace, and we all enjoyed a delicious lunch.

After lunch, it was back to quilting, and Liz called the meeting to order. We recited the “Our Father” and the Pledge of Allegiance.

Kay Lynn had a birthday card for all of us to sign for Joyce Ehrenberger. Liz read a thank you note from Bessie, and Irene read a humorous article that was brought by Libbie Vrla that we all enjoyed.

It was announced we will quilt for Dorothy in April and for Anita in May. Secretary Dolores Vrana read her minutes, and Anita Kubin gave the treasurer’s report. Both were approved as read.

Anita volunteered to buy and bring plates next month.

Ann had made several squares that she showed how we all are to make for the Christmas quilt. The squares are to be 12 and one-half inches, any color, any pattern. Everyone is supposed to make some squares then someone would sew them together.

They also discussed a quilt top for the Junior Sokol quilt that we always make for them. Bring us your ideas.

The 50-50 dollar winner was Dorothy Prachyl. We are happy for you.

One of our members - Marie Vrla has been in the hospital, and now is in rehab. We hope all goes well for you, Marie.

I went to the Grocery Store at 6am, but found out other people had the same idea.

There was a line out in front of the building with people waiting to get in.

The store now opens at 7am, because of the Virus.

People in line maintained the 3 foot rule, keeping their appropriate distance.

We waited and waited. More people came. One by one, they joined the line.

The line now stretched all the way to the end of the building.

Then another line formed on the other side of the door, so you had converging lines of people, all waiting for the signal to enter.

There was no policeman or security to manage the line.

Some people cheated, but for the most part, people were polite and followed the protocol.

Of course most were on their cell phones, trying to kill time.

Some cars pulled in but then kept going when they saw the long lines.

They did not want to wait. Some elderly folks hobbled up to the door only to find out the store was still closed. They did not know what to do.

There was no exception for the handicapped.

People staying home afraid to go out afraid of contact afraid of neighbors plenty of cheap gas but cars stay in park quarantined with empty shelves, empty hearts yearning for a hug a hardy handshake

We want to hug but can only shrug the virus leaves us without love

Isolation, trepidation hide in our houses keep 6 feet away sanitize all surfaces virus is the dirty word scared of the invisible scared of each other masks cover mouths but you can still see the fear in people’s eyes.

All hunkered down our senses numbed how vile the virus on us sprung

I waited for close to an hour and then finally the doors opened and the scramble was on.

People flew by me as they rushed the door.

With my arthritic knees and bad back, I could not keep up with the rushing crowd.

Then a kind lady came up from behind me and offered me her shopping cart.

I was amazed, but so grateful.

I accepted the cart with relief because my back was hurting and it gave me something to hang on to.

I thanked her for her kindness.

It’s that kind of thing that restores your faith in humanity.

Like a guardian angel she appeared out of the blue.

I never got her name.

Then at the barber shop today the girl who cut my hair took my jacket and hung it up for me.

After the haircut, she retrieved it for me and proceeded to hold it up so that I could easily slip my arms into the sleeves. How rare is that?

She also helped me with the card reader. I was having trouble with it, trying to make it process. She too was so kind and considerate.

A 19-month-old baby at home with her aging parents, she was a hard-working mom who took the time to help an old man.

How nice was that?

These aren’t big events, hardly noteworthy in the big picture of our mad mad world, and yet . . . these small acts of kindness show the innate goodness of people.

There are still some left.

No, there are Many left.

We just don’t hear about them.

Dear District Youth Counselors, Assistant District Youth Counselors, Youth Leaders, and Assistant Youth Leaders, These are trying times for all of us during the COVID-19 pandemic. It tests our adaptability and our resilience. But you know what? We’re going to beat it!

Until some degree of normalcy returns, please know that the entirety of SPJST is operating in accordance with Governor Abbott’s Executive Order and are refraining from any public gatherings, including youth meetings and events. With that being said, please know that youth clubs are excused from meeting in the months of March through May. If the social distancing extends beyond that period, SPJST will abide and keep you informed. In the event that you would like to host a virtual meeting in order to keep your group connected, that would be wonderful. There are a lot of ways to stay connected: everything from Zoom and Google Hangouts to teleconferences. The choice is yours.

Hello, SPJST family!

While this outbreak has been going on, I’ve been trying to keep healthy and stay busy at home.

When I don’t have school work, I enjoy fishing on my family farm. This has been keeping me active and from staying inside too long.

I also enjoy riding my bike with my dogs. I miss hanging out with my friends and family.

Dear Věstník Readers, Today, we had an SPJST meeting online. I wish it could have been at the hall, but it was really good seeing everyone.

I have to stay home, and I do not like it. I want to go back to school. I play outside with my brother and do school. My mom got us a surprise for being good. It was a watermelon!

It is almost Easter Sunday. We get to go Easter egg hunting because there is really nothing else to do. Bunnies are not on quarantine.

I am excited about going to camp. I hope we get to go.

Lodge 47, Seaton youth stays busy building Lego sets Dear Věstník Readers, I’ve been playing Lego sets all day. I got a new rocketship Lego set.

It came from Target.

The UPS sent it through the mail, and it took forever to get here. It finally came in when I was playing outside. I was so excited to get it.

I’m making my own Lego sets now. I will keep on building until I’m done and when I’m finished building, I will get to play with it.

In Memoriam In Memory of Annie L. Dolezal Annie L. Jurasek Dolezal, 92, of Palacios, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, March 3, 2020. She was born on April 12, 1927, in the Gobbler’s Creek area of Wharton County near El Campo to the late Charles and Albina Fiala Jurasek. She attended schools in the Carancahua, Midfield, and Palacios areas. She married Victor Dolezal on June Annie L. Dolezal 25, 1946, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Blessing. To this union were born two children: Helen and Billy. During their married life, they lived in the Palacios area.

Annie was a former pro shop manager of the Palacios Gulf Course for five years. She retired from Palacios Independent School District in 1998 after 24 years of service. She retired as secretary for the Farmers Mutual Insurance Company (RVOS Lodge 75) in January 2001 after 25 years of service. She was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America, Court Our Lady of the Sea, SPJST Lodge 30, Taiton, and former director of Palacios Medical Foundation.

Annie was a devoted mother and a lady of many talents, from cooking and baking delicious foods, to sewing lovely clothes, to gardening and caring for her many flowers and plants - she was a jillof-all-trades and master of all.

She is survived by daughter Helen Dolezal of Palacios; son Billy Dolezal of Palacios; sister Evelyn (George) Capak of Palacios; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Victor Dolezal; brother John L. (Evelyn) Jurasek; sister Dorothy (Ed) Baros; nephew Ernest Matlock; and niece Janie (Eddie) Kallus.

Visitation was on Friday, March 6 at 9 a.m. with a rosary at 10 a.m. and a funeral mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church in New Taiton with Reverend Michael Rother officiating.

Burial followed at St. John’s Catholic

Cemetery.

In Memory of Stephen Chudej Stephen Mark Chudej, 58, of Plano, Texas, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, December 21, 2019, after battling pancreatic cancer since April 2018.

Stephen was born in Ennis on December 4, 1961, to Jerry and Agnes (Krajca) Chudej.

He married Delia Hejny on December 12, 1992, in San Antonio.

Stephen was a successful costume designer, earning himself three Emmy Awards: the Stephen Chudej first for “Pancho Barnes” and the other two for “Wishbone.” He also owned and operated San Marcos Costume Company, renting period costumes to television, film, and stage productions. In September 2019, Stephen received the Gratitude Award from “Women in Film Dallas.”

His filmography includes The Final (2010) - costume designer; Friday the 13th (2009) - costume supervisor; Ray (2004) - costume supervisor; Saving Jessica Lynch (2003) - costume designer; Secondhand Lions (2003) - costume supervisor; SERVING SARA (2002) - costume supervisor; A Tail in Twain (1997) - costumes; The People next Door (1996) - costumes; Wishbone (1995) - costumes; Necessary Roughness (1991) - costumer; For the Boys

(1991) - costumer; Air America (1990) - costumer (LA Unit); Talk Radio (1988) - costumer; Raising Arizona (1987) wardrobe supervisor; Prison Wardrobe (1987) - supervisor; Square Dance (1986) - wardrobe assistant; and The Trip to Bountiful (1985) - production assistant.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 135, Ennis.

Stephen is survived by his wife; daughter Haley Lorraine Chudej of Stafford, Virginia; son Travis Riley Chudej, who is attending college at Texas A&M at Corpus Christi; sister Monica Popko of Northville, Michigan; and niece Angela Stempien and spouse Vince Stempien and their three children of

Northville, Michigan.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Stephen donated his body to UT Southwestern in Dallas. No memorials or service have been planned at this time. Announcements for such services will be made when appropriate.

In Memory of Charles Chandler Charles Thomas Chandler, 86, died Thursday, April 2, 2020, at St. Mark’s Medical Center in La Grange, Texas, following an extended illness.

He is survived by wife Retta Slavik Chandler of La Grange; daughter Susan Chandler of Temple; son Ken Chandler and wife Lisa of Cleburne; and grandchildren Grace Anne Wilhelm, Lauren Wilhelm Paunescu and Charles Chandler husband Cris Paunescu, Marie Wilhelm, Sarah Wilhelm, Anna Chandler, Bridget Chandler, and Ben Chandler.

Charles T. Chandler was born on September 15, 1933, in Cameron to Katherine Underwood Chandler and James Guy Chandler. He had one older brother, Guy Edward Chandler.

Charles Chandler attended Cameron public schools and was a varsity football player at Yoe High School, graduating in 1952.

He served in the military during the Korean conflict. After completing training in the Topographical Engineering Corps at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, he was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany, until the completion of his service. After service, he attended Arlington State College, which at the time was part of the Texas A&M University system, but now is the University of Texas at Arlington. He completed an associate of arts degree at Temple Junior College in Temple.

He married Retta Slavik, also of Cameron, on November 21, 1956, at Saints Cyril and Methodius Church in Marak.

Charles managed the family businesses, including Chandler Paint Company in Austin and Cameron Lumber Company in Cameron for 14 years. He worked as a purchasing agent for Yowell Lumber Company in Killeen and at lumber yards in Waco, DeSoto, and Duncanville. He was a staff claims adjuster for RVOS Farm Mutual Insurance Company and retired from there after 10 years. He then worked as an independent adjuster for two storm seasons. During the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina

VĚSTNÍK and Rita, he worked for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in declared disaster areas.

While living in Cameron as a business owner, he was involved in the community in the Chamber of Commerce and the Lions Club and served as president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees).

Charles enjoyed large and small building projects. He built a custom home in DeSoto, in which he and Retta lived for many years. He designed the house with a special foundation to withstand time and heavy storms, as well as a beautiful marble fireplace. He enjoyed landscape design and was an avid gardener. For a number of years, he pursued the model train hobby and built elaborate track layouts. He was also a talented artist, although he rarely painted.

Charles loved to explore and travel.

He took the family on weekend and day trips to every corner of Texas. Later, the family traveled from coast to coast in the summer. He and Retta continued to travel for the rest of his life, including to his ancestral village in England as well as the Czech Republic.

Although he was not Czech, Charles participated in the Czech community.

He and Retta enjoyed dancing at the historic dance halls around Texas. For several decades, while living in the Dallas area, he and Retta spent the majority of their time in La Grange, building the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center.

Charles was a family man who put his wife first and worked hard his entire life. He loved order and was particular about doing things well. Whatever he put his hands to do, he completed with quality and excellence.

Due to the current pandemic, memorial services are pending. A private committal service of burial will be held at Saints Cyril and Methodius Cemetery in Marak.

V červnové schůzi oslavíme tradičně výročí 50 a 75 let člentví u naší jednoty.

Padesát roků oslaví Helen Marie Matúš, David Mynář, Freddie Pavlas, Lawrence Steimer, Ernest Tobola a 75 let u naší jednoty oslaví Jeanette Karlík a Mary Ann Roden. Těšíme se na hojnou účast členstva v síni sv. Josefa v letním měsíci.

Zpráva ze schůze řádu Jaromít SPJST č. 54 ve Westu v Texasu Jan Vaculík Pravidelná čtvrtletní schůze řádu Jaromír Slovanské podporující jednoty státu Texasu se konala dne 8. března 2020 v síni sv. Josefa při osadě na Nebevstoupení Panny Marie ve Westu ve státu Texasu za poměrně slušného počasí. Jarní období přichází do Texasu právě v měsíci březnu a skuteně nyní ke konci března vyrašili i ořechy, které obyčejně pučí nejpozději. Jen aby se příroda neunáhlila a nepřišlo nenadálé ochlazení a všechny květiny a užitečné plodiny by pomrzly. Květiny budou většinou odkvetlé, ale ostatní plodiny na zahrádkách by utrpěly škodu a musely by se znovu rozpučet.

President našeho řádu Freddie Kaluža zahájil schůzi, složili jsme přísahu americké vlajce a republice, pro kterou stojí Uctili jsme památku zemřelých členů a přivítali presi denta 3. okrsku Johna Engelku s manželkou.. Zápis z minulé schůze byl čten a schválen tak, jak byl čten tajemnicí Janice Kaluža.

Protože prožíváme období předvelikonočního času a udržujeme tradice národa, změnili jsme pořad schůze a zahájili schůzi večeří a teprve pak následovala schůze. Pochutnali jsme si na velmi dobře připravené rybě a bramborovém salátu a po krátké večeři jsme zahájili schůzi. Dosti dobře se nám schůzovalo, protože jsme měli plné žaludky jídla a cítili jsme se v klidu.

Koordinátorka bratrských akcí u našeho řádu Linda Kaluža provedla členstvo seznamem událostí, kterých je možno se zúčastnit v rámci jednoty a i mimo jednotu. Naše finanční tajemnice Mary Lou Mynář přednesla pěknou

zprávu a dolary v bance rostou na našem účtu.. Poznamenala, že letos byly menší premie, protože procenta na úrocích jsou nižší a tím je odměna za roční práci pro naše agenty také nižší. Jednota také snížila premie ředitelům a ostatním pracovníkům, kteří obyčejně dostávají bonus za jejich práci. Tím si jednota vyrovnala částku vydání a příjmů a prokazuje lepší hospodárnost v činnosti.

V té souvislosti se rozvinula dosti obšírná debata o způsobu hospodaření jednoty a ovšem staří pamětníci povzpomínali na doby, kdy životní pojistka byla váženou okolností v životě našich členů, zatímco nyní se většina mladších členů snaží proměnit pojištění za hotové peníze a tím krátí množství peněz, se kterými jednota operuje. Je nutno přesvěd čovat členy, aby udržovali pojištění po celou dobu splatnosti a pomohli jednotě získat lepší finanční postavení. Ovšem takovou laskavost dnes málokdo uzná.

S tím souvisí i změny v činnosti jednoty a Hlavní úřadovna by se měla připravit na schválení rozumných změn na nadcházející konvenci. Nejdůležitější bude podpora bratrského soužití a podpora členů a členek v jednotě. Životní pojištění je důkežitá věc v životě člověka a v mnohém přispívá v lepšímu postavení člověka v zaměstnání a ve společnosti bez finanční ztráty rodin zemřelých členů.

Pak byli přijati noví členové a projednali jsme vyřízení vánoční besídky po společenské a finanční stránce. Všichni jsme si vzpomněli na dobré časy, které jsme tehdy prožívali. Podpořili jsme finančně tančící studenty a ostatní návštěvníci si pochutnali na výborné veěeři. Jednota pamatuje finanční podporou na maturanty a nabízí slušné stipendium.

K této potřebě shromažďujeme peníze, abychom je mohli zase rozdávat k užitečným věcem.

Podobná akce projevuje naši benevolenci vůči mladým lidem.

TCGS presents April Book of the Month: The Pilgrims for Hope, Volume II Originally written and published in the Czech language by Dr. Josef Simicek, a lifelong resident of Lichnov, Czech Republic, The Pilgrims for Hope, Volume II, documents the many people from the villages of Frenstat and Trojanovice who immigrated to the United States during the years of 1856 to 1914.

In 2013, Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) entered into a contract with Dr. Simicek, whereby we were given the exclusive rights to publish his seven books in the English language.

This book is the third in the series. This

study on emigration from Frenstat and Trojanovice freely follows (and in many cases references) previous publications, Hope Has Name-Texas and The Pilgrims of Hope, Volume 1 (the emigration from Mnisi, Ticha, and Vleovice).

The first emigrants from Frenstat and Trojanovice stepped on American soil in the fall of 1856. A handful of brave people stepped out into a new life on an unknown continent. The hope for a better future, for them and their children, made them quickly forget the years of persecution and misery in their “old fatherland.” They were fascinated by ideas of freedom and liberty that had deprived them for years. They were willing to spend first years in suffering, hardship, and renunciation in the “new land.”

They were strengthened by faith in God and the sense that famous skills, industry, and persistence of the Valachian people must lead to success in the end, even in the hard and unusual conditions of immense Texas plains. They did not

Czech Heritage Museum announces temporary closure The Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center, located at 119 West French Avenue in Temple, has closed as a preventative and protective measure during the COVID-19 virus pandemic.

TCGS seeks recipes for 20th anniversary Czech cookbook

TCGS announces publishing Czech Families Histories V

The Taylor Czech Chorus has established a $500 scholarship to be awarded to a graduating senior of Czech descent.

The selected recipient will have the scholarship paid to the accredited college or university of his/her choice. All graduating 2019-2020 seniors who are eligible candidates and that meet the following criteria are urged to apply.

Celebrations bring good eats! The phone rings and you learn visitors are coming. Perhaps you open the church bulletin or you are in a meeting; a holiday is coming; whatever the occasion might be, you need to prepare a special dish or dessert. What is your “go to” recipe(s)? Will you share it with us?

It is hard to believe the Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) will be celebrating it’s 20th anniversary in January 2021. As the saying goes, “My, where did the time go?” As with any special occasion, plans are made and action begins in order to achieve the goal of completing those plans. One such goal for our anniversary is a new cookbook.

Our first cookbook, Tribute To Czech Cooks, sold out almost before it was received. A second order was placed, ending with the same results. While we paid tribute to Czech cooks in general, the cookbook’s main focus was on recipes of ancestors and articles on them as well.

With this cookbook, we are calling for your delicious, special recipes. You know - it is the dish or dishes you prepare that are always requested. It may be for a special main dish, vegetable, salad, cake, pie, bread/rolls, etc., prepared as only you can, to taste that certain way.

However, please do not get us wrong. If you did not have the opportunity to submit an ancestor’s recipe in the Tribute To Czech Cooks Cookbook, please feel free for it to be included in our upcoming Cooking With Czech Recipes Cookbook.

Attention, Czech men! We know you are excellent cooks be it in the kitchen or the outdoor grill. You have your special “tricks” for giving the dish you prepare your own unique taste. Just know, we look forward to including your recipes, too.

This cookbook will also be special in that we invite you to include photos photos of the person preparing the dish; the dish preparation process, and/or the finished dish or dessert. While the photos you submit will be in color, in the cookbook, they will be black and white.

In January 2018, Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) announced the publishing of Czech Family Histories V. The project was then placed on hold. We are pleased to announce the publication is once again underway and is projected to be available during our 2021 anniversary year.

It is hard to believe so many years have passed since the publishing of Czech Family Histories, Volumes I through IV. Yet, they have. Volumes I and II were published in 2005, followed

by Volumes III and IV in 2007. TCGS is pleased to announce plans for publishing Czech Family Histories, Volume V. Lives have changed greatly since 2005 and 2007. We have celebrated many marriages, births, and graduations, and we have celebrated the lives of family members who have gone before us. Many who submitted articles for the previous histories are the family genealogist and, through research, new ancestors and family members have been discovered. Possibly several trips to the Czech Republic have been made whereby new photos have been gained of not only ancestors or newly found relatives, but of ancestral homes as well.

Perhaps you do not have an article in any of the previously published volumes, and you would like to write your family history and cherished family memories so they will be documented and preserved but the cost of publishing such a document on your own prohibits it.

If anything mentioned above fits your profile, Texas Czech Genealogical Society would like for you to seriously consider writing and submitting your story, or stories, along with photos to be part of our Czech Family Histories, Volume V. You do not have to be a member of Texas Czech Genealogical Society in order to participate; however, we would gladly welcome you. Please see the submission guidelines for further information.

2) Have a minimum high school GPA equivalence of 3.0 on a 4-point scale.

3) Provide documentation of Czech heritage. Possible forms of documentation which can show Czech lineage include, but are not limited to: a. birth certificates of generations showing Czech name(s), b. family tree, c. Baptismal certificates of ancestors authenticating heritage, d. docket from immigration ship(s), e. ancestor’s passport(s) or visa(s).

4) Include a 300- to 400-word, typed, double-spaced essay defining why you think you should be selected for this scholarship, how your Czech heritage has influenced you, and what your heritage means to you.

5) The recipient must live no farther than 25 miles from Taylor, Texas (exception: a relative of a Taylor Czech Chorus member).

6) The recipient must be willing to attend a meeting of the Taylor Czech Chorus in Taylor, Texas, to receive the scholarship award.

7) Submit a completed application and all necessary documentation by the deadline of Friday, May 1, 2020. Late applications will not be considered.

Submission Guidelines for Czech Family Histories, Volume V to be published by TCGS Submission Deadline: January 23, 2021 1. You may submit as many articles as you wish. Each can be of any length, but each submission must be submitted separately on a CD, DVD, or flash drive, and it must be accompanied by a printed copy of the article. Submissions can also be sent via email. If you do not have access to a computer, a typewritten hard copy will be accepted. We are sorry but we cannot accept handwritten articles.

2. Articles should be typed using number 12 Times New Roman font and be single spaced with double spacing between paragraphs. Margins should be set at one inch.

3. If at all possible, only black and white photos should be submitted as the book will not be published with color photos.

If color photos are submitted, they will be published in black and white. Photos should be of good quality. Copies of quality photos can be made at Walmart, Walgreens, or CVS for your convenience at a very low price.

4. *Please do not send original photos as they cannot be returned.* 5. Please be sure to write the names of all persons on the back of the photo as they are viewed from the front of the photo, along with your name, address, and phone number, in the event we need to contact you.

Proto jsem začal představení natáčet a posílat je fanouškům divadla, ať s dětmi ukrátí chvíli. Pak mne napadlo poslat pohádku i krajanům za oceánem, zde to tedy je, první nahraná pohádka je klasika Zvířátka a loupežníci. I run a small puppet theater in the Czech Republic, I play about 400 performances a year. We have been quarantined for the fourth week in a row, and all cultural and social events have been canceled. I assume it is the same for you.

That’s why I started filming the show and sending it to the fans of the theater to spend some time with the children.
