Almeida Bravenec of Lodge 88, Houston Celebrates 100th Birthday Almeida Elaine (Franke) Bravenec was born April 4, 1919, in Industry, Texas, to Edward and Mary Elizabeth Franke. Almeida’s siblings included Arthur Franke, Erwin Franke, Monroe Franke, Laura Franke Pav, Norma Franke, and Louise Frank - all deceased She married Franklin Dale Bravenec in Bellville on April 7, 1937. The couple was married for 49 years before Franklin passed away in 1996.

The couple had three children - son James Earl Bravenec (1940-1948); daughter Linda Jean Davenport (husband Richard); and daughter Joan Elizabeth Caffey (husband David deceased).

Almeida has lived in Houston for 79 years. She worked at Love Elementary for 20 years during the 1950s and 1960s as cashier.

She enjoyed traveling a lot of the world with Franklin. They visited Germany and Czechoslovakia and saw where their families had lived and were buried.

Almeida played cards with friends every Friday night, and she went dancing at Lodge 88 or other lodges every Saturday night for at least 30 years.

She enjoys the women’s circle at her Methodist church in Houston and the birthday club with ladies from Lodge 88, Houston who meet

Almeida’s grandchildren include Christie Rose, Jennifer Caffey, Lisa Caffey, and David Caffey Jr. and great-grandchildren Grace Rose and Reagan Rose.

Readers Write ✍ Salem Lutheran Church sets March 22 fundraiser Salem Lutheran Church (Terry’s Chapel) will hold a barbecue fundraiser and silent auction on Sunday, March 22, 2020, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will be at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton - Star Hall, 10842 State Highway 53, Temple (hall is seven miles east of Temple).

The meal will consist of barbecue

beef, sausage, beans, potato salad, coleslaw, dessert, and tea - all for only a $10 per plate donation. Proceeds will go to American Cancer Society/Relay for Life.

What You Do Know Can Help You

In preparing for the upcoming March 21 and 22, 2020, Youth Leader Workshop at Camp Kubena, I ran across a document that I prepared for a similar event a few years back. It was a paper entitled, “The Very Basics of Parliamentary Procedure,” and it reflected my ambitious effort to condense the 600-plus page Robert’s Rules of Order to an easyto-read one-page summary! I’ll share that with you in a moment . . .

Simply stated, parliamentary procedure is based on the idea that the majority is able to make decisions in an orderly and efficient manner while allowing the voice of the minority to be heard. Modern parliamentary procedure dates back to rules that originated in the early British Parliament back in the 1560s. It’s a timehonored concept that works and one that SPJST lodges — and youth clubs — are asked to apply in conducting their business affairs.

With those ideas in mind, I look forward to presenting attendees to the Youth Leader Workshop with a short course on the basics of parliamentary procedure along with some materials that the participants will be able to share with their youth clubs and mother lodges when they return home. In the meantime, I present “The Very Basics of Parliamentary Procedure.”

4. The president serves as the neutral “gatekeeper” in discussions of matters to be voted upon.

5. In order to discuss something that the group needs to vote on, someone other than the president has to first make a motion. “I move that . . . happens.”

13. If the motion passes, the president gives directions or requests that appropriate action be taken by whoever is responsible to act on the motion that has passed.

6. Before an item can be discussed as a motion, someone has to offer a “second.”

“I second the motion.”

7. The secretary’s minutes need to reflect who introduces the motion, who seconds the motion, and what the motion states.

The secretary may ask the president to clarify these things at any time.

8. If there is no second, the motion “dies,” meaning it will not be discussed.

9. If there is a second, the president calls on members of the assembly to speak in favor of or against the motion.

10. If someone who supports the basic motion wants to suggest a change within the motion, he/she may make an “amendment” in the form of a new motion. “I move that the current motion be amended like this . . . ”

2. Only those individuals who are recognized by the president may speak during a meeting which has “come to order.”

11. The motion to make an amendment must receive a second before it is discussed and voted upon. If it does not receive a second, it dies and discussion returns to the original motion. If the amendment passes, then discussion resumes on the amended motion.

3. If someone wants to speak, it should be to the whole group unless the president gives permission to have a small

On a Related Note In addition to running a good lodge meeting, SPJST recognizes the importance of fielding a fraternal program that is relevant and in touch with the lives of its members. Whereas some lodges are experiencing a resurgence in member participation, others have been less fortunate. There are reasons for this: While it is certainly possible for a lodge to experience a level of success without a plan, those lodges whose members have

invested the time and resources into developing a specific strategy and plan can look forward to achieving success at a much quicker pace.

According to Wikipedia, “Strategic planning is an organization’s process of defining its strategy or direction and making decisions on allocating its resources to pursue this strategy, including its capital or people.” A strategic plan can be your lodge’s blueprint for carrying out its mission. The process of strategic planning is a critically important element of successful lodge management. Please contact me if you would like to collaborate on a strategic planning session for your lodge. It will be an hour-and-a-half well spent!

Postscript: If you still haven’t signed up to participate in the Youth Leaders Workshop at Camp Kubena, it isn’t too late! Even if your lodge does not have a youth club, please consider sending representatives to the 2020 Youth Leaders Workshop at Camp Kubena. It’s an excellent way to learn what the SPJST Youth Program has to offer. All of the informational sessions will take place on Saturday, March 21; however, attendees are invited to check-in as early as 7 p.m. on Friday, March 20. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided for the Friday night social. There is no charge to participate in the program or to stay Friday and/or Saturday nights in the cabins.

FROM THE SUPREME LODGE Minutes of the February 18, 2020 Special Called Meeting of SPJST Supreme Lodge held at the Home Office, Temple, Texas PRESIDING The meeting was called to order at 1:30 p.m.

OPENING OF MEETING The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

PURPOSE OF THE MEETING The primary focus was to review the recommended proposed changes submitted to the By-Law Committee from the Supreme Lodge to be presented to delegates at the 33rd Convention in June.

It was decided to continue the research on the electronic voting equipment for the convention.

Director Victorick moved that any proposed by-law changes will need to come through a lodge, the proposed change will have to be discussed and voted on by the lodge membership, and presented by the lodge, not individuals, to the By-Law Committee.

The motion was seconded by Director Pospisil, and the motion passed unanimously.

Director Bayer moved that the voting board power be only the seven district directors, the motion was seconded by Director Victorick. Voting in favor: Director Victorick, Director Davis, Director Bayer, Chief Financial Officer Mikeska, and President Vanicek. Voting in opposition: Director Pospisil, Director Engelke, Director Stavinoha, Director Kaspar, Vice President Dixon, and Controller Vajdak. The motion failed with five in favor and six opposed.

Director Kaspar moved that the voting board power be the seven district directors and the hired chief executive officer, seconded by Director Stavinoha. Voting in favor: Director Victorick, Director Pospisil, Director Engelke, Director Davis, Director Stavinoha, Director Kaspar, Chief Financial Officer Mikeska, Vice President Dixon, Controller Vajdak, and President Vanicek. Abstained: Director Bayer. The motion passed with 10 in favor and one abstention.

President Vanicek moved that once the by-law changes are adopted that the officers will have permission to renumber or reorganize the format of the document with no changes being made to the wording. Director Kaspar seconded the motion, and the motion carried unanimously.

ADJOURNMENT The meeting adjourned at 2:33 p.m.

District Two Spring Meeting Sunday, March 15, 2020 • Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall Hello, Vestnik Readers !

I hope you will all join us at Lodge 47, Seaton for the District Two Spring Meeting on Sunday, March 15, 2020. Registration is from 1 to 2 p.m., and the meeting begins promptly at 2 p.m.

There are a lot of exciting things going on at this business meeting: a rock decorating contest for youth and adults; district youth silent auction in which each youth club and family is asked to bring an item with a value of at least $10; and a special treat—an Easter egg hunt.

It has been quite some time since we have had an egg hunt, and Amber and I felt it was time to get one going. Bring your baskets and if possible, please bring a dozen plastic-filled eggs. All youth (members and non-members) are invited to participate. The hunt will be held following the business meeting and prior to the delicious meal being prepared by Lodge 47 President Edwin Pechal and

his cooking crew.

I thank the ladies attending the District Two planning meeting who volunteered to take care of the silent auction for the youth. I love it . . . adults working with and for the youth and youth doing the same for the adults. We have some awesome District Two members!

It was great to see District Two Director Jesse Pospisil at the meeting. It was less than a month ago that he had knee surgery. I know he is ready to get over hobbling around and be back on two feet again. We all wish you a quick recovery, Jesse.

District Five sets March 22 delegates’ meeting at Lodge 88, Houston Attention All District Five Delegates: A District Five delegates’ meeting will be held on Sunday, March 22, 2020, at 2 p.m. at SPJST Lodge 88, Houston.

To help delegates understand any changes prior to the June 2020 Convention, we will be discussing by-law changes presented to and reviewed by the By-Law Committee. Under old business, Richard Brewer replaced a paper towel dispenser in the men’s room.

Under new business, Bobby Kubitza was going to get the filters cleaned on the vent-a-hood in the kitchen.

Lodge 66, Waco supports Elm Mott Volunteer Fire Dept.

The meeting of SPJST Lodge 66, Waco was called to order by President Michael Galler on Monday, February 24, 2020, at St. Pauls Church at 6 p.m. with all officers present. Present were 12 members and four guests - Joan Shelton, and Hannah, Fiona, and Reid Galler.

The Pledge of Allegiance and motto were recited. Members stood for a moment of silence for deceased member Eugene Slovak.

Secretary Sister Dana McAdams read the minutes of the January meeting, and they were approved as read.

Sister Dana McAdams received a letter from Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny concerning the convention souvenir book.

Lodge 66 will purchase a half page ad in the book.

For the March 16 meeting, tacos, dessert, and tea will be served.

Bookkeeper Sister Diana Engelke gave the bookkeeping report.

Many thanks go to Brother Ron Neumann for purchasing most of the food for the February meeting. Thanks to Jane Galler and Diana Engelke for also furnishing some food. It was enjoyed by all.

Lodge 142, Houston reports on February meeting The Lodge 142, Houston meeting was held on Sunday, February 16, 2020.

At 1 p.m., everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch of hamburgers with all the trimmings and chips. Dennis led us in prayer. A birthday cake for Jack Dowling and Mary Wunderlich was served as dessert.

President Dennis Hermis called the meeting to order at 2:15 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all.

A moment of silence was held for Ms. Mildred Holeman. May she rest in peace.

Roll call of officers showed all present except Vice President Kerry Herrington, Youth Leader Amanda Muzny, Assistant Youth Leader Kyle Herrington, Flag Bearer Zac Coleman, who were all at SPJST functions, and Sales Agents Catherine Manchack, Stacey Kellen, Connie Carter, Carlos Iparraguirre, and Kerry Herrington. We had 16 members and guests Barbara LinneyGonzales and Cindy Messina present.

Secretary Elizabeth Hermis read the January minutes. The minutes were approved as read.

Financial Secretary/Treasurer Keith Kieschnick read the January financials report. The report was approved by all.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Pat Schleider reminded us about the District Five Spring Meeting on Sunday, April 19 at Lodge 81, Needville. She also spoke about the domino tournaments and to refer to the Vestnik for dates.

Sick Committee reported that Mary Wunderlich was in the hospital, and Mo

Dunn had surgery and is in rehab at this time.

Auditing Committee met on February 14 and reported all books were in order.

Members with additional insurance were Nikki Monk and Christopher Schleider (sales agent was Kerry Herrington) and Joseph and Jolin Havies (sales agent was Catherine Manchack).

Under old business, we discussed the meeting calendar dates. New business discussion was having an ad for Lodge 142 in the SPJST Convention brochure.

Our February birthday celebrant was Jack Dowling on February 7, celebrating his 90th. Happy birthday, Jack!

Anniversary mentioned was Ms. Rosie Malota and her late husband who would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on this day.

The Ennis SPJST fraternity is as old as the parent organization, which was organized in 1897.

Today, there is a great emphasis on the future of the local lodge, and the future is bright, according to local President JoAnn Jones and Vice President Arlene Honza.

As much as the organization is focusing on its future today, it is obvious how important the history of the lodge is to not only the longstanding members, that is, the generation before JoAnn and Arlene, but also to the young members who are just starting to get involved. “As a child, the SPJST was a regular part of our family life. I was here every weekend,” JoAnn recalled.

VĚSTNÍK “My grandparents helped build it.”

When members speak of building the lodge, the meaning is two-fold. The lodge is built as new members join, but many have been involved in the physical construction and remodeling process of the building itself. “Our parents and grandparents can no longer change the light bulbs and sweep the floors like they used to so it is up to the next generation to take the lead.”

Construction of the current lodge hall began when the previous building was lost to a fire in 1970. The construction of the new hall brought the lodge closer to town and was completed quickly, with the grand opening occurring in November 1971. “Now, we are nearing the end of a three-year remodeling project that began with the new

Monday, March 9, 2020 bar and club room in 2016,” Arlene related. “We moved a couple of walls to expand the area and make it more attractive. The walls have been repainted, and the ceiling tiles have been replaced.

It is a comfortable place for families to come and enjoy themselves. We have good crowds that come out every Wednesday evening and enjoy playing dominoes and building new friendships.”

The remodeling projects are ongoing, and with the renewed building comes a renewed interest by members both old and new. “My father comes out to play 42 every Wednesday,” Arlene continued. “We are open only on Wednesday evenings, but we have special events in the main area regularly.” The remodeling project has extended now through the dining room and into the main hall. The hall originally had Spanish decor, with red-carpeted walls above dark wood paneling. “The carpet helps with the acoustics in the building, and that is important to the bands that play regularly here. We have brightened the walls in the dining room and dance hall, while keeping the acoustics in mind. We also upgraded the electrical systems for the bands, so their large speakers and amplifiers would not trip breakers.”

The youth of the SPJST are also very active. Youth Leader Rita Holland added, “Members meet monthly at the local lodge and get to plan not only social activities, such as dances and picnics, but also ways to help the community through fundraisers or charitable donations. Through state activities, youth gain confidence in themselves through competition and gain lifelong relationships. Members have an opportunity to learn about the Czech culture and traditions by learning songs, dances, and the Czech language.” Scholarships are given each year to qualified youth members.

The SPJST is well known for hosting wedding receptions, quinceañeras, reunions, and many other events where people need a place to gather. “We added a new chandelier in the hall that is really beautiful. Wedding coordinators and decorators, such as Suzie Betik, make the hall look magical,” JoAnn mentioned. “We see too many local weddings going out of town to other venues, and that is one of the things we had in mind with the recent remodeling of our entrance.”

Arlene added, “The newly installed

flagstone walkway crowned with new flowers and greenery is our latest addition. It’s like our ‘curb appeal.’ It is a pretty place for the bride and groom to make their exit.”

One fun-filled event that the SPJST has is its annual fundraiser, which will be on February 15. Tickets are still available from individuals and merchants around town, as well as at the bar at the back of the hall on Wednesday evenings. The grand prize is a Kubota Side by Side! “The fundraiser has made the remodeling possible, and we have seen the event grow over recent years.

People see what we are doing and want to be a part of it,” Arlene said with some excitement in her voice. “Being in midFebruary, we always have a Valentine’s theme. The band, Lost Money, provides the music. The event includes a live auction, raffle, dinner, and dancing. The meal is a traditional Czech barbecue.

A cornhole tournament starts around 2 in the afternoon, come rain or shine, because we have the tournament indoors on the dance floor! We have other fun things, as well, such as a large heartshaped candy box. We remove the chocolates and fill it with other valuable items, but as Forrest Gump said, ‘You

never know what you are going to get.’

If you don’t win that, we also have a lotto tree and a cash cake.”

The recent upgrades to the building seem to be matched by a resurgence in interest from those coming back to the lodge. JoAnn recalled, “We have had so many compliments about what a good time people have had as they have come back to the SPJST hall. They say it reminds them of ‘old times.’ People are getting reacquainted with old friends they have not seen in a while.”

As the building approaches its 50th year, it has had quite a facelift, and it has recently become a nonsmoking facility.

People seem to really appreciate the nonsmoking atmosphere.

And what would a Czech hall in Ennis be without a great kitchen? The SPJST history records that in March 1969, “Ladies made 70 dozen kolaches and sold them at 75 cents a dozen.” The most recent part of the hall to be remodeled was the kitchen. Everything is new from the ceiling tiles to the floor tiles, with beautiful new cabinets, countertops, stoves, and sinks. Betty Macalik faithfully manages the kitchen and is in charge of the annual holiday strudel fundraiser during Thanksgiving and Christmas. Imagine the strudel that the new kitchen turns out . . . but they may cost a little more than the kolaches of 1969!

Carla Krenek’s entertainment was about Mardi Gras. Fat Tuesday is the last day of the Carnival season as it always falls the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday,” reflecting the practice of the last night of eating rich, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season. Related popular practices are associated with Shrovetide celebrations before the fasting and religious obligations associated with the penitential season of Lent.

Rex selected the official Mardi Gras colors in 1872. The 1892 Rex Parade theme “Symbolism of Colors” gave meaning to the colors. Purple represents justice; green represents faith; and gold represents power. We also learned that Mardi Gras is also celebrated in Czech Republic as well.

Secretary Bettie House read the minutes that were approved as read, and she also presented the financial report.

Thank you was received from the Rosie Barta family for the scholarship memorial. Notes were received from MaKenna Poppe and Madison and Kenzie Lutz inviting the members to the county livestock show.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Kathleen Polasek reminded members about the District Seven Spring Meeting on Sunday, March 29. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive commences on March 31. Join Hands Day is May 2.

Youth Leader Regina House reported the youth painted rocks at the last meeting and will enter them at the district spring meeting. In April, the youth will visit the botanical gardens for the photography contest. Lodge 202 will host the District Seven Youth Achievement Day (YAD) on Sunday, June 7. Youth worked on a scrapbook and will finish in May. The youth club has two new members.

District Seven Director Bob Bayer announced all four state standing committees met with the Supreme Lodge in February. Director Bayer installed the Lodge 202 officers.

For the district meeting on March 29, set-up time is 8:30 a.m. The youth will

Ennis Sewing Circle Ennis Sewing Circle met on Thursday, February 13, 2020, at Ennis Sokol Club Room. We stretched Maggie Holy’s pretty quilt top and had quilters all around. Thank you, everyone, who came early to help quilt.

We had 21 quilters, and we quilted till lunchtime. President Liz Krajca led us in grace, and we all enjoyed a delicious lunch as always.

After lunch, President Liz called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and we had a moment of silence for Emily Barts, Helen Jurica, Lori Koriota, Mark Strunc, and Albin Prachyl.

Ann Clagett was thanked for the pretty valentine decorations. Someone read a thank you note to Liz Krajca for the lovely flowers she brought to outgoing officers Irene Prachyl and Dee Anderson.

Secretary Dolores Vrana read the minutes of the last meeting, and new Treasurer Anita Kubin gave the treasurer’s report. Both were approved as read.

Vice President Irene read several sewing tips that were very good and enjoyed by all. She also read several jokes that we all had a good laugh over.

It was announced we will need coffee cups next month. I think someone volunteered to bring them.

We will quilt baby quilts in March. I think there are several who have baby quilts so don’t forget to bring them. Dorothy Prachyl also has the quilt that we started but didn’t finish. I think she said she will bring it in May. Maybe we can finish it then.

Traditionally, a small plastic or porcelain baby is hidden in the king cake. Originally, the baby was placed in the cake to symbolize baby Jesus. Today, the baby symbolizes luck and prosperity to whomever finds it in their slice of cake.

A motion was made and voted on that we, our Circle, make a donation to the Věstník for the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive. I think it will be done this month.

On Friday, July 17 and Saturday, July 18, Ellis County Quilting Club will have its quilt show. Last year’s was very nice.

Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth It was a cold, rainy day, but Cupid came to visit anyway. Everyone was in red or pink, and the 30-plus attending had a “sweet” time. The day included gifts of valentine cards, flowers, and candy . . . and President Cathy came up with a cute valentine exchange game.

The meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance, and President Cathy welcomed our visitors. Marlene Bass brought a longtime friend Cecelia Novacek, and Claire Rooney brought sister-in-law Delores Rooney. We welcomed them, and we hope they enjoyed themselves as much as we enjoyed having them.

Janet Basham had just returned from her brother’s memorial service in Portland, Oregon. She was pleased to hear of the many remembrances people had about her brother. Janet then shared a couple of meaningful messages for us to

Secretary Joan asked if the members really wanted to hear her minutes, and lo and behold, someone made a motion to skip them. Guess that answered that question (smile)! I was more than happy to leave them on the table for anyone who wished to read them. The financial report was given by Margaret Laymance, and Marlene Bass gave the sunshine report. Cards were sent to Robyn Brownlee after a stint in the hospital and to Janet on the loss of her brother.

In January, the Circle ladies voted to give Lodge 92 a monetary gift. John Durham was asked to update us on the projects that lodge members have completed and are planning for the coming

months. The lodge hall looks wonderful, and we are so pleased to help them with their projects. Jon, I believe, said that the plan for our donation is to landscape the areas around the entryway of the building. We are just so thankful to the lodge members for allowing us to have such a great place to meet each month. Thank you, Lodge 92! We appreciate you all.

Jon also updated us on the bands and dances that will be taking place over the next couple of months. If you are interested in coming out, you will be able to find the schedule in the lodge activities section of the Vestnik.

In March, we are once again asking our members to bring toiletry items for the ladies at Safe Haven. Joy Booe sug-

gested that we bring our donations in a purse that we no longer use. Just maybe this endeavor will bring a smile and could be fun for someone who needs a purse as well. So members, please look into your closets and fill up a bag to give away to those less fortunate.

February birthdays were celebrated.

Shirley Martin, Claire Rooney, Judy Schlosser, and visitor Delores Rooney were serenaded with gusto. The rest of our February “babies” were missing in action. A belated happy birthday and wishes for another exciting year are sent to Brenda Lackey, Pauline Morbitzer, Ray Terrell, and Bobby Shropshire.

Six door prizes were awarded, after which the valentine exchange took place. I received a Mardi Gras boa, and I’m planning to wear it to church for Fat Tuesday’s pancake dinner. It’s really lovely. The blessing for lunch was said, and oh, was the food extra good! Maybe it was the weather, or maybe we were extra hungry that made it so tasty. At any rate, we thank Karen Smith, Jeanne Clark, Carolyn Irby, and Claire Rooney for setting a wonderful table.

I know I have probably forgot something important, but I hope not. Lent will have already started by the time you receive this report so I encourage all to reflect on this special season. Make everyday count, and always be thankful for what we have and share the love of our Savior in life’s journey.

TABA Home & Garden SPJST Car Show Friday, February 21 to Sunday, February 23, 2020 • Bell County Expo Center, Belton, Texas SPJST partnered with Temple Area Builders Association (TABA) to host a car show at the 2020 Home and Garden Show held Friday, February 21 to Sunday, February 23, 2020, at the Bell County Expo Center in Belton. The car show attracted 55 entries that were displayed along red carpets inside the Exposition Building.

An estimated 5,000 people attended the three-day event on Friday evening from 6 to 9 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday from 12 to 5 p.m. Ballots were handed to spectators who were asked to vote for their three favorite vehicles. The votes were tallied, and 20 “People’s Choice” trophies were awarded on Sunday afternoon. Photos

of winners and vehicles appear below and on the following pages. Additional awards were presented for best engine, best graphics, best interior, best paint, and driver’s choice.

Photos of the vehicles were posted on SPJST’s Facebook page, and a special award was presented to the vehicle with the most likes, comments, and shares. Results and additional photos from the weekend event appear on

SPJST’s Facebook page.

Attendees to the car show also visited an SPJST display that featured life insurance products and youth and fraternal programs.

About Dorcas Tomasek Dorcas Tomasek has been involved in medical needs camping since 1992. She worked summers as the Woodshop Specialist at The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp before moving to Florida to work yearround, first as a unit leader, assistant camp director then camp director for 17 years at Camp Boggy Creek, a member of SeriousFun Children’s Network. During her tenure there, Dorcas and her team served more than 57,000 children and their families. She then moved into a risk consultant position with The Redwoods Group working with camps and Jewish organizations across the country helping them be stronger, safer, and witnessing their mission come to life.

She is now the primary caregiver for her mother and remains active in camping as an independent consultant and America Camp Association (ACA), presenting at local, regional, and national conferences on numerous topics, teaching the New Director’s Orientation and the Accreditation Process Workshop.

She became a standards visitor in 2002 and instructor in 2007. She is a member of the Texoma Winter Conference committee and chair of the North American Camping Conference for Hemophilia Organizations. Most recently, Dorcas had the honor of being the lead visitor for the newly accredited UT- Austin camps and youth programs which serves 9,000 campers per summer through 300 programs. She is a welder, and, yes, she does have a collection of 23 feather boas which she proudly wears to every camp and camping event.

District Two youth activities planned for March 15 spring meeting Hello, District Two Youth and Vestnik Readers !

I hope you will all join us at Lodge 47, Seaton for the District Two Spring Meeting on Sunday, March 15, 2020. Registration is from 1 to 2 p.m., and the meeting begins promptly at 2 p.m.

There are a lot of exciting things going on at this business meeting: rock decorating contest for youth and adults, too; district youth silent auction in which each youth club and family are asked to bring an item with a value of at least $10; and a special treat—an Easter egg hunt.

It has been quite some time since we have had an egg hunt, and Amber and I felt it was time to get one going. Bring your baskets and if possible, please bring a dozen plastic-filled eggs. All youth (members and non-members) are invited to participate. The hunt will be held following the business meeting and prior to the delicious meal being prepared by Lodge 47 President Edwin Pechal and his cooking crew.

I thank the ladies attending the District Two planning meeting who volunteered to take care of the silent auction for the youth. I love it . . . adults working with and for the youth and youth doing the same for the adults. We have some awesome District Two members!

It was great to see District Two Director Jesse Pospisil at the meeting. It was less than a month ago that he had knee surgery. I know he is ready to get over the hobbling around and back on two feet again. We all wish you a quick recovery, Jesse.

At the SPJST meeting, I got an M&M jar. We are getting quarters for it, but I put pennies in there because I forgot.

In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy We, the members of SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the family of GARY LOUIS CHUMCHAL, age 65, of Pleak, Texas, took the Lord’s hand on Tuesday, January 28, 2020, surrounded by his loving family.

Gary was born on March 3, 1954, to the late Albert and Georgene Labay Chumchal. He was born and raised in the Wharton area where he spent most of his youth working on the family farm in Hungerford. He Gary Chumchal was a graduate of Wharton High School. On December 30, 1971, he married the love of his life, Dotty Viktorin, in Hungerford.

Gary and Dotty settled in Pleak where they raised their three wonderful

spouses.

Visitation began at 1 p.m. Monday, February 3 with a rosary recited at 2 p.m., and the funeral service began at 2:30 p.m. all at Wharton Funeral Home with Father Bob Knippenberg officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Memorial donations may be made in Gary’s name to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Avenue, 16th Floor, New York, New York 10001. Condolences can be left at whartonfuneralhome.com.

children. He loved to spend his free time hunting, fishing, tending to cattle, and working on various projects. His most favorite times were spent with his wife, children, and grandchildren. His precious grandchildren meant the world to him and kept him very occupied.

He was well known by his family and friends for his mechanical skills and ability to fix anything with a motor. He enjoyed classic cars and trucks. He was even able to tell the year of most by looking at the head lights or tail lights.

Gary had an incredible work ethic.

He worked as a machinist in the oil and gas industry for 44 years where he was able to make a career and pass his knowledge along to others.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton.

Gary is survived by his wife of 48 years, Dotty Chumchal; daughter Misty Sherrill and husband Todd of Needville; sons James Chumchal of Ganado and Phillip Chumchal and wife Jennifer of Needville; grandchildren Tori Chumchal, Maci Chumchal, Addyson Sherrill, Brayden Sherrill, Cassidy Sherrill, Kayleigh Chumchal, Justin Zwahr, and Jacob Zwahr; and two brothers and their

Jodie Anton Vasek passed away peacefully on Monday, February 3, 2020, at Baylor Scott and White Hospital in Irving, Texas.

He was 87.

Memorial service was held Saturday, February 8 at 3 p.m. at Donnelly’s Funeral Home in Irving and on Saturday, February 15 at 2 p.m.

Jodie was born on December 28, 1932, to Joe and Albina Vasek in Zabcikville and grew up in Czech farm country. He graduated from Holland High School in 1952 before joining the United States Army, where he served in Germany as part of the reconstruction of Europe post-World War II. Jodie was very proud of his Czech heritage and was a lifelong member of SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas.

Jodie was the first in his family to attend college. He graduated from University of Texas at Arlington. He spent most of his career in printing and paper sales and continued working into his 80s, long after most people would have retired.

Jodie and Jeanette Andel were married at Ocker Brethren Church on January 29, 2000, and lived in Temple. They spent many wonderful years traveling the world together, polka and waltz

dancing, and visiting casinos. Jodie was always the life of every gathering, telling jokes.

After retiring, Jodie frequently spent time at his ranch near Lake Whitney and especially enjoyed sharing his love of hunting and fishing with his children and grandchildren.

Jodie is survived by wife Jeanette Andel Vasek; children Susan Josch and husband Bob, Melissa Fulton and partner Rick Baumgarth, and Paul Vasek and wife Tracy; stepchildren Dawna Mischtian and husband John, and Marsha Greeley and husband Michael; grandchildren Miranda Dean and husband Patrick, Faith Foster, Mary Rose Vasek, Charles Josch, Robert Josch, Rachel Vasek, and Emma Vasek; stepgrandchildren Tiffany Carty and husband Nathaniel, Zoe Mischtian, Nick Mischtian, Erin Greeley, Samantha Greeley, and Kiera Greeley; greatgrandchildren Eva Gray Dean and James Dean; sisters Dorothy Lloyd and Marguerite Vanderford; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Jodie was preceded in death by parents Joe John Vasek and Albina Krahulik Vasek; grandson John Bently Foster; and his children’s mother Montez Vasek.

In Memory of Mark Strunc Mark Anthony Strunc, born December 2, 1957, in Ennis, Texas, passed away January 24, 2020, in Plano at the age of 62.

Rosary was held on Saturday, February 8 at 9:30 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church in Dallas.

Mark graduated from St. John High School in 1976. He attended the Univer-

Mark was a warm, funny, friendly person who gave generously to charity and was a lifelong Catholic. He loved the outdoors, especially hiking and deer hunting.

He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Marie Strunc; and stepmother JoAnn Strunc.

Those left to cherish Mark’s memory include beloved daughter Rachel Strunc; brothers Jim Strunc and wife Mary Anne Gentry, and Gary Strunc and wife Patti; stepbrothers Stan Mikel, Robert Mikel, and Chris Mikel; stepsisters Joni Andrews and Teri Andrews; nephew Randy Strunc; niece Jessica Diaz; and countless friends, family members, and loved ones.

In Memory of Gregory Navarro Gregory Navarro, age 84, passed away in Dallas, Texas, on Thursday, February 6, 2020.

Gregory was born in Palmer on March 12, 1935, to Ruperto and Reyes (Hernandez) Navarro. He grew up in Palmer and Ennis and graduated from St. John High School in Gregory Navarro 1953. On March 2, 1961, Gregory married the love of his life Eudelia Cantu, and they made their home in Ennis. Gregory served in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959 and again in 1961 to 1962 in Cuba.

Gregory worked for Leggett and Platt as a foreman, for American National Insurance in sales, for Southern Pacific Railroad for 25 years as a clerk, and retired from Trinity River Authority in

TCGS presents March Book of the Month “The Pilgrims for Hope” Originally written and published in the Czech language by Dr. Josef Simicek, a lifelong resident of Lichnov, Czech Republic, The Pilgrims for Hope, Volume I, documents the many people from the Moravian villages of Mnisi, Ticha, and Vlcovice who immigrated to the United States during the years of 1855 to 1914. The village of Lichnov is a short distance from the three villages described in this book. In 2014, Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) was privileged to republish the completely updated book in the English language.

Extremely poor living conditions drove the people from these villages, as they sought relief from the oppressive Austro-Hungarian Empire. However, even the Revolutionary Year of 1848 did not fulfill their hopes of a better life.

Although the government was forced to make a few concessions, things did not change much. In fact, one form of oppression just changed to another.

Farmers and small landowners were forced to pay very high fees to the nobles. Even though the farmers tried to pay, poor crops prevented them from being able to do so. Eventually they were forced to sell their property at a very low price and look for another form of sustenance.

Having heard about the fertile land from relatives and friends who had already made the journey, many now also made the very difficult decision to leave their beloved Czech lands to go to Texas. Full of hope as they envisioned life in this new land, the first brave men from the Mistek District set out on their long trip across the ocean in the mid1850s. Although the Civil War in the United States stopped immigration between 1861 and 1865, during the 1870s, thousands decided to follow the dream of going to America, namely Texas.

The Pilgrims for Hope, Volume I contains 194 pages of valuable information for anyone whose roots lie in this area of Moravia, including narratives describing the causes for immigration to America, documents, financial requirements and means, dangers of the voyage, ship listings, first-hand stories of why the people wished to travel, and special sections on the three villages of Mnisi, Ticha, and Vlcovice, with key information on the travelers along with a number of family trees. The surname index makes it easy to discover the families who emigrated.

CESAT announces Czech language course for high school students As president of Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas (CESAT), I wanted to inform you of the new Czech language courses that are offered through Blinn College. CZEC 1471 (Beginning Czech I) and CZEC 1472 (Beginning Czech II) are now offered, so that high school students may take the courses for dual credit. A second year of Czech language courses is in development so that students may take two years of Czech language in high school.

Because of the rich Czech heritage in Texas, learning the Czech language is particularly appealing to students. It provides an opportunity for students of Czech descent to maintain their heritage and culture that is interwoven in the settlement and growth of many communities in Texas. It may also provide an additional language for students who are interested in majoring in international business or European studies.

Once again, Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) is teaming with the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogical Center in Temple, Texas, to offer this “open to all” workshop to try and meet your research needs. It’s our biggest and most extensive workshop yet! It is hard to believe the Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) will be celebrating it’s 20th anniversary in January 2021. As the saying goes, “My, where did the time go?” As with any special occasion, plans are made and action begins in order to achieve the goal of completing those plans. Our first cookbook, Tribute To Czech Cooks, sold out almost before it was received. A second order was placed, ending with the same results. While we paid tribute to Czech cooks in general, the cookbook’s main focus was on recipes of ancestors and articles on them as well.

With this cookbook, we are calling for your delicious, special recipes. You know - it is the dish or dishes you prepare that are always requested. It may be for a special main dish, vegetable, salad, cake, pie, bread/rolls, etc., prepared as only you can, to taste that certain way.

However, please do not get us wrong. If you did not have the opportunity to submit an ancestor’s recipe in the Tribute To Czech Cooks Cookbook, please feel free for it to be included in our upcoming Cooking With Czech Recipes Cookbook.

Attention, Czech men! We know you are excellent cooks be it in the kitchen or

the outdoor grill. You have your special “tricks” for giving the dish you prepare your own unique taste. Just know, we look forward to including your recipes, too.

This cookbook will also be special in that we invite you to include photos photos of the person preparing the dish; the dish preparation process, and/or the finished dish or dessert. While the photos you submit will be in color, in the cookbook, they will be black and white.
