aturday, February 29, 2020, is Leap Day, or Leap Year Day. February has 29 days this year - the first time in four years. Leap years coincide with SPJST Convention years, summer Olympic Games, and presidential elections in the United States. With all of these exciting events, we can really use the extra day!

According to timeanddate.com, leap days are needed to keep our calendar in alignment with the Earth’s revolutions around the Sun. “It takes the Earth approximately 365.242189 days – or 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 45 seconds – to circle once around the Sun. This is called a tropical year.

“Without an extra, or intercalary, day on February 29 nearly every four years, we would lose almost six hours every year. After only 100 years, a calendar without leap years would be off by approximately 24 days in relation to fixed seasonal days such as the vernal equinox or the winter solstice.”

Leap day has been around for more than 2,000 years, and it is still associated with age-old customs, folklore, and superstition. One of the most well-known traditions is that women propose to their boyfriends - instead of the other way around.

2020 is an exciting year! We have an extra day so let’s make the most of it! How will you spend your extra day on Saturday, February 29?

Richard Hrbacek Announces Candidacy for Supreme Lodge Vice President

Dear SPJST Members, With more than 20 years of insurance experience, I have had the pleasure to assist many agents, agencies, and clients. I have also served as Operations Manager and Marketing Director in the SPJST Insurance Department working directly under Supreme Lodge Vice President Hiram Dixon for the past twoplus years. I take pride in serving SPJST and in working with our members and agents. With your support and confidence, it would be my honor and privilege to serve you as Supreme Lodge Vice President.

We have accomplished several projects over the past two years in the Insurance Department. We built a results-oriented strategy for a new distribution system that was implemented in July 2018. This has resulted in a substantial savings to overhead costs for the Insurance Department while increasing life sales by 26 percent in 2018 and more than 30 percent in 2019. I worked with Vice President Dixon, Regional General Agents (RGAs), General Agents (GAs), and individual sales agents on marketing plans and sales strategy execution in order to reach sales revenue goals. I was also charged with cultivating new relationships with advisors, sales agents, and agencies to drive market share.

I have worked extensively on agent recruiting, education, and training. We expanded our agent recruiting program in the field through the RGAs. Numerous products, procedures, sales concepts, and sales cycle training meetings have been conducted through cost-con-

scious group meetings and seminars and individual presentations. Educating the process of helping members and prospects has been one of the primary focuses. I have also helped our agents understand the importance of life insurance as a foundation to build a sound financial plan while expanding their knowledge on the use of cash value insurance. Classes have also focused on IRS regulations and how they can create opportunities for agents to assist existing members and in recruiting new members.

Numerous combined sales meetings with agents have been conducted on the use of life insurance and mitigating risk using life insurance through selective planning, assisting business owners in differing income through specially-designed life insurance plans, estate planning, family protection planning, and developing retirement plans with the use of fixed annuities.

Prior to joining SPJST, my experience was in accounting and business management. I also served as an Investment Advisor Representative working with business owners and individuals. In this role, I worked with clients to develop and implement financial plans with life insurance as a key component to protect my client’s income, home, business, and children’s education and dreams. I have also assisted life agents in strategies to engage prospects and clients in a focus analysis of needs and personal planning with life insurance as a core foundation of the financial plan.

Before I entered the insurance industry, I worked for Hyatt Corporation as assistant controller. In this role, I oversaw the accounting department staff, generated financial statements, cash flow statements, profit and loss statements, tax preparation, inventory reconciliation, and investments. I was responsible for delivery and presentation of profit and loss reports as well as annual forecast and budgets. In addition, I prepared for and handled external and internal audits, worked to coordinate the launch and implementation of new hardware and software systems, and managed hardware and software applications of the system.

In the mid-1990s, I worked as a controller for a group of closely held companies involved in real estate,

construction, agriculture, oil, and gas where I later became a key executive within the companies. In this position, I was responsible for analyzing and interpreting the organization’s financial records. I also handled the accounting operations of the company, including the production of financial reports, forecasting, budgeting, taxes, maintenance of information technology, and implementing a comprehensive set of controls ensuring reported results complied with generally accepted accounting principles. During my tenure, we improved efficiency of all corporate segments, implemented several cost reduction strategies, and increased cash flows resulting in improved profitability.

In 1998, I obtained my Series 7 Registered Representative license which I have held for 21 years. As a broker, I assisted clients with buying and selling securities – stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and variable insurance products such as variable universal life and variable annuities. I also hold and maintain a Series 63 license. As an Investment Adviser Representative, I provide advice about securities to clients and develop financial plans. I have also held a Texas General Lines life, accident, health, and HMO license for 21 years and a Texas General Lines agent property and casualty license since 2003.

As an independent Registered Representative and Investment Advisor Representative, I ran my own financial practice, managing the full client acquisition lifecycle, target marketing, engaging in one-on-one opportunities to help clients build financial plans based on necessary insurance coverage, financial objectives, risk tolerance, and other information in order to develop solutions based on clients’ needs analysis. I also developed a turnkey marketing system known as CAM, which includes pointof-sale marketing materials. This helped life agents, advisors, and P&C firms enhance their brand identity and valueadded services. We have also begun to implement this type of system with SPJST that is resulting in extended sales opportunities for our agents and helping SPJST generate new and recurring revenue.

During my Management Academy training, I worked directly with Garry Kinder - a world-renowned trainer and owner of Kinder Brothers International - in agency development, agency planning and procedures of building a life insurance agency from the ground up,

and developing sales professionals for the life insurance industry.

I have extensive experience in developing and expanding a life insurance agency; developing, marketing, and assisting life insurance agents, financial advisors, property and casualty agencies, and their agents; advanced life insurance marketing support; and case management. In my independent practice, I moved from financial planning to focus on life insurance planning, filling the void created when the large national carriers stopped providing one-on-one service, education programs, agency building, marketing, and sales ideas. I developed a model designed to assist agents in creating new and recurring revenue for their business by utilizing a sales and service approach that differentiates what was being offered in the marketplace.

My team quickly became a premier outsourcing partner to life agents, advisors, and property and casualty firms.

My team served as the training, agency consultant, sales partner, distribution and processing center, and marketing organization to aide in the sale of life insurance. Many of our marketing services were proprietary and developed by former senior marketing directors of national insurance and financial service companies. My focus was on developing agents, producers, and insurance principals; engaging in one-on-one agency development discussions; presenting sales solutions; and marketing ideas. My team worked directly with life agents, financial advisors, and property and casualty firms enhancing their marketing, streamlining expenses and reducing costs, improving efficiency through technology while providing value-added products and services.

Operations With my previous experience as a controller, I have strategically planned and managed deployment of resources for marketing and sales initiatives, focusing on reduction in expenses while still being able to develop a growing, productive sales and marketing program. I delivered sales presentations to business owners, boards of directors, and professionals to include corporate officers on risk mitigation strategies utilizing life insurance and benefits of corporate-owned life insurance. I have proposed and designed benefit packages including strategies differing income and creating tax-favored executive

benefit plans for small business owners using cash value life insurance. I have also assisted business owners in establishing estate plans, trusts, gifting, limited partnerships, and using life insurance for asset protection in addition to assisting individual families with estate planning, gifting, and family protection in paying off debts, mortgages, and college fulfillment planning through the use of life insurance.

Compliance I believe in taking a proactive approach to understanding and complying with regulations, staying abreast of Texas Department of Insurance hot topics and compliance, and any litigation issues that face the insurance industry.

I have extensive experience in investment and insurance compliance along with a strong, working knowledge of back office operations and insurance laws/regulations. As SPJST Operations Manager, I have utilized my previous compliance knowledge and experience with Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, Inc. (FINRA) and Security Exchange Commission regulations to reduce risk in member interaction and to comply with Department of Labor rules.

My knowledge and experience in back office operations with securities and insurance regulations as it relates to insurance operations and compliance will help SPJST meet current regulatory guidelines and help prepare for future changes in regulations.

Marketing Continuing to expand on our current marketing while developing a turnkey marketing system, which includes pointof-sale marketing materials, will be one of my priorities. Topics and concepts that are of interest to our members and prospects will help our agents enhance their presence in the lodges and communities they serve while building brand identity for SPJST. I also intend to develop value-added services and products that will be available to our members and members who are business owners.

My goal will be to leverage technology to communicate to existing members and prospective new members in an efficient, cost-effective manner. In order to expand our lodge footprint in the communities, we must create brand awareness through both fraternal and insurance channels by building awareness

SPJST Growth Working together, the Insurance and Fraternal Departments must develop a renewed focus that serves our youth and helps our lodges grow. We must develop new means to service our members while maximizing revenue dollars in order to expand the footprint of SPJST into the communities we currently serve, enhancing our brand identity and our core mission.

For 2020 and beyond, I will implement the use of technology to improve how we deliver training in an efficient, economical way, but also use technology to expand recruitment of agents and SPJST insurance products within the communities that our Society serves.

This in turn will strengthen our lodges, while delivering our brand and fraternalism in new ways across Texas.

One of my core missions is to expand membership in the lodges. In order to do this, we must find ways to reengage our brand within the communities we currently serve while expanding our outreach into areas where we currently do not have a lodge presence. By expanding our footprint in all communities across the state, we will develop a brand identity touching more potential members through our lodges and fraternal activities.

We must reach out to and engage new generations — not just for the continuance of our lodges but to grow to new levels in the next decade. This is certainly a challenge that we face along with other fraternal organizations. Our mission must be one in which we engage the next generations, looking beyond 2020 to grow our lodges and develop fraternalism within our communities by uniting in a common goal.

My wife Tammy and I will be married 36 years in July. Tammy, whose maiden name was Beseda, is also of Czech descent. We raised our four children on the values of our Czech heritage and continue the heritage with our three grandchildren.

I am a graduate of La Grange High School in La Grange, Texas, and earned my bachelor’s degree with a concentration in finance from St. Edward’s University in Austin. I also completed graduate courses in management, mar-

keting, and business law through University of Phoenix. Additionally, I advanced my education specifically in the life insurance industry as I was selected to attend the American National Insurance Company Management Academy.

Jim Schroeder Announces Candidacy for District One Director

Dear District One Members, My name is Jim Schroeder, and I currently serve as the Regional General Agent (RGA) for District One. With the confidence and blessings of friends, family, and colleagues, I would like to announce my candidacy for District One Director.

I was born in Anderson, Texas, and raised by a family which enjoyed a simple life. I was influenced by my family who instilled sound ethics and believed in hard work. I graduated from Anderson High School and continued my education at Sam Houston State University where I earned my bachelor’s degree.

Later, I earned by master’s degree from Prairie View A&M University. I am a retired educator having worked as a teacher, coach, athletic director, and

principal. I have also worked in the insurance business for 24 years having served as area manager for one of the largest life insurance companies in the United States. I have worked for two fraternal life companies - one of which is SPJST. The variety of these positions have given me the opportunity to develop leadership skills which include interpersonal communication and the ability to manage conflict, establish and maintain a fiscal budget, and to uphold the integrity of each job position.

Though change can be difficult, it is essential for growth. SPJST is in the midst of a critical era. With my experience, I will provide leadership that will develop a positive pathway to success in order that SPJST can continue to grow as changes are made.

Bobby Davis Announces Candidacy for District Four Director

Dear Members, I would like to announce my candidacy for District Four Director. I have served in this position for the past one and one-half years, filling the unexpired term of the late Billy Rollwitz, who passed away in October 2018.

My experience working with fraternal benefit societies began 24 years ago.

I have served as an agent, regional fraternal coordinator, state field representative for SPJST, and past president of Texas Fraternal Congress. I have also served on the board of directors with Habitat for Humanity of San Angelo for four years.

As District Four Director, I have listened to concerns and worked diligently to solve issues in an effort to help make SPJST a great society.

A quote that I always say and believe in is: “A fraternal benefit society is like a train going down a track. It takes both rails for the train to go down the track.

Like fraternal benefit societies, it takes both the insurance side and the fraternal side working together to keep them going.”

Donnie Howard Announces Candidacy for District Seven Director

Dear Members and Delegates, My name is Donnie Howard of Lodge 185, New Braunfels, and I am announcing my candidacy for the position of District Seven Director. Although I am not a lifelong member of SPJST, I got here as fast as I could and jumped in with both feet! In 2007, I pur-

chased life insurance certificates for my children. I soon followed upon seeing the endless opportunities that SPJST provides for its members.

When I became a member of SPJST, I began chaperoning youth camp, which happened to be the last year at Echo Hill. I have continued to chaperone District Seven camps every year since, as well as reaching across district lines and chaperoning for District Two in previous years when the district was in need. I have also been the “Camp DJ” for several years and thoroughly have enjoyed working with our youth.

In 2009, I was elected to the board of directors for SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) at Cooper Farm, now known as Camp Kubena. As a board member, I served on several committees. In 2012, I had the honor of being voted as president of the board, serving until SPJST purchased the camp.

At the district level, I have held the

position of District Seven President for the past four years and am the current alternate director for District Seven. At the local lodge level, I have served on numerous committees, as well as lodge fraternal activities coordinator (FAC). I had the honor of recently being elected to my eighth term as lodge president. I was humbled to be nominated as the lodge fraternalist of the year on two separate occasions.

I am a 1986 graduate of University High School in Waco, Texas. The summer of 1985, prior to my senior year, I joined the United States Navy’s delayed entry program. While in the Navy, I served as platoon leader in boot camp and again as platoon leader in A School. After reporting to the USS California, I had the opportunity to travel the world and learn a tremendous amount about life. After this experience, I thank the Lord above to live in the best country in the world that grants me freedom to enjoy a fabulous fraternal like SPJST and to be able to serve great people in a different capacity.

After my time in the Navy, I entered the business world which culminated with a career at Xerox Corporation. My time with Xerox was crucial as everything was transitioning from analog to digital into the technology age that we are in today. While at Xerox, I also worked my way into a leadership position in multiple areas. From the experience and knowledge that I gained, I believe I can be an asset to the SPJST Home Office and continue to transition deeper into the technical world.

In 2012, I was offered an early retirement package from Xerox, and after many prayers and sleepless nights, I decided to accept it.

This was the perfect opportunity for me to take a rather small “side business” and grow it into a full time limited liability company (LLC). A company that started as a one-man show grew to six employees with 700 percent growth in sales over the past eight years. It is with my experience in my own company, as well as Xerox, that I believe I have developed a management and business acumen that can help take District Seven and SPJST - working alongside the directors and officers - into the future.

At the 32nd SPJST Convention, I was a candidate along with our current District Seven Director, who has filled the seat for many years and has done

some really good things. While I came up just a little short in a close race for the director’s position, I didn’t let that deter me in my quest. Many of our wise and seasoned District Seven constituents advised me to get in there, dive in, and learn. That is exactly what I did.

Over the past four years, I have attended several SPJST Supreme Lodge meetings at the Home Office in Temple - on my own dime - in order to learn more about the ins and outs of SPJST and the board room process. As alternate director, I wanted to be prepared in the event I would need to step in and with the hopes of becoming your next District Seven Director.

I have two children that have gone through the SPJST Youth Program, worked as staff members at Camp Kubena, and are now adult lodge members. I also have a high school senior and an eight-year-old daughter who is in the youth program.

I have always been a firm believer in “giving back,” as they say, and have always been involved with the community. I am a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in New Braunfels. I have served on the Little League board for 15 years, band boosters, and coached football at Saints Peter and Paul as well as startup softball and baseball programs at school. I am currently a board member of Texas Polka Music Museum and Goodtime Polka and Waltz Club in New Braunfels.

It is with these experiences that I believe I can go out into District Seven and beyond to help with the growth of SPJST. If I am fortunate enough to serve as District Seven Director, my goal is to continue to invest in our youth program by reaching out to the younger adult generation of SPJST who are in college and the members ahead of them who now have children of their own so that we may water the “roots” of existing lodges for a better and stronger tomorrow.

Sandra Hoggard Announces Candidacy for District Seven Director

My name is Sandra Hoggard, and I am excited to announce my candidacy for District Seven Director. I am a lifelong member of SPJST currently residing in San Antonio and an active member of Lodge 202, Jourdanton. My earliest memories of SPJST include dancing at Lodge 161, La Parita Hall as a small child. My grandparents Pete and Tillie Valchar managed the hall for many years and served as local and district officers. Pete became District Seven Director in 1972 while Tillie was a sales agent. My parents Lloyd and Bettie House have both continued the tradition of superior participation, serving as officers in the local lodge and for District Seven for many decades. Bettie served as the District Seven representative on the By-Law Committee for 20 years.

All three of my children - Lane, Sammy, and Amanda Hoggard - were raised in the SPJST Youth Program.

Each of them participated in District and State Youth Achievement Days (YAD), camp, community service events, and youth activities. They each served as Leaders-in-Training (LITs) and held leadership roles in the local club, each serving as president at least one year. Lane was crowned District Seven King for three years, awarded the Leadership Grant, and the District Merit Grant. Sammy, in his first attempt, was crowned District Seven King and the 2013 State King, won the Flag Day Essay Contest, and was awarded the Leadership Grant and the State Merit Grant. Amanda was crowned District Seven Queen three times, and in 2016,

she was crowned SPJST State Queen.

She also received the Leadership Grant and the State Merit Grant and won the Flag Day Essay Contest. All of them enthusiastically fulfilled their LIT and royalty duties as representatives at district and state functions.

I have served as assistant youth leader for Lodge 202 for the last 12 years and as camp chaperone for 13 years. For the past six years, I have served as treasurer of both Lodge 202, Jourdanton and District Seven. As District Seven Treasurer, I chaired a task force to review the district’s expenses to develop cost-saving ideas, prepared an income statement and cash flow of the previous five years, and presented a budget for the district to manage funds efficiently. After implementing the recommendations of the task force and with the generosity of members supplying and buying silent auction items, under my regime, District Seven has recorded net income to rebuild our funds to the recommended one year’s cash flow availability. I have attended every Corpus Christi Getaway and have offered cost-saving ideas to continue this activity that can be enjoyed by all ages.

My family is also no stranger to fraternalism – a fundamental foundation of SPJST. All three of my children earned the Gold Presidential Service Award each year of high school for 250-plus hours of community service. My mother was recognized as the 2004 SPJST State Fraternalist of the Year, my father was the 2011 State Fraternalist of the Year, my son Sammy was the 2013 State Fraternalist of the Year, and I was named the 2008 State Fraternalist of the Year and 2009 National Fraternalist of the Year.

Serving as District Seven Director seems like the next logical step for me to utilize my qualifications to help an organization that four family generations have been devoted to for so many years. I graduated as the 1983 Valedictorian of Charlotte High School, and four years later, graduated Summa Cum Laude from Texas A&M University in College Station with a Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural economics with 33 hours of accounting. In 1989, I earned my Certified Public Ac-

countant (CPA) certification and have spent my entire career in accounting roles in the oil and gas industry. I am currently working on my seventh accounting system implementation project. As part of the project team, I must “think outside of the box” to create solutions to complex problems, create new processes, and implement systems and procedures that improve efficiency, but maintain appropriate controls to mitigate risks. As an accounting manager for the last 20 years, I am accustomed to making tough decisions on hiring, reorganizing teams, working with poor performers to remedy concerns, and providing tools and training to develop staff.

I have worked in large corporations, mid-size companies, family-owned, and start-ups and have volunteered with non-profit organizations so I have insight on many levels. In 2012, I chose to leave a large corporation to accept the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) position of a start-up company. As CFO, I implemented an accounting system, hired, trained, and supervised accounting staff, prepared and presented financial statements that were audited annually by an external party, developed budgets, and created interactive five-year and 10year forecasting models. I worked directly with financing and banking institutions to obtain financing for a $60 million annual capital budget based on the forecasting models and managed two investment funds, performing all accounting and reporting functions.

After three years of profitable returns, the company successfully merged with two companies in a $436 million merger that moved the company out of state. I remained with the company through the accounting system transition period then returned to Tesoro Petroleum (now Marathon Petroleum) in the accounts payable manager role – the same position I had vacated four years previously.

I served for six years on the National Board of the Council of Petroleum Accountants Societies (COPAS), a nonprofit oil and gas professional organization. COPAS is a council of 26 societies with more than 4,000 members across the United States and Canada. COPAS issues accounting procedures, accounting procedure interpretations, and training materials for the oil and gas industry. I served in each of the officer positions while on the board.

As president, I was responsible for presiding over the semi-annual council meetings, the quarterly board meetings, remote supervision of the day-to-day office operations in Denver, and creating organizational goals and appointing task forces to accomplish those goals. I am most proud of my work on a special task force that year that established classroom training courses for industry professionals. That endeavor has now grown into an educational foundation providing webinars, classroom training, and online training for the industry.

You may be wondering how I will be able to dedicate the necessary time and effort to serving SPJST as District Seven Director. I can assure you that the busier I am, the more I accomplish. For example, the year I was president of COPAS, I was an accounting manager at Tesoro, an active member of my church, SPJST assistant youth leader, and a single mother of three children ages 13, 11, and 9. The children all played soccer so I was “soccer mom,” treasurer for one team, and transportation engineer for six practices and four to five games per week. Now, my children are young adults and have spread their wings. Because of my tenure, I am granted five weeks of vacation per year which will provide ample time to meet all board of director duties.

I dearly love SPJST and look forward to this opportunity to build an environment of continuous improvement that will secure the success that SPJST has enjoyed the last 123 years. My SPJST and educational background along with my professional and volunteer experiences have provided me with essential tools to develop creative solutions, evaluate proposals, and make decisions that will enhance SPJST, preserve our heritage, and benefit the membership. I appreciate your careful consideration of my qualifications and your support as I pursue following in my grandfather’s footsteps.

Youth leaders, boosters invited to attend 2020 Youth Workshop at Camp Kubena Dear Friends, An SPJST Youth Club can be a wonderful way to get young people involved in your lodge. Even if your lodge does not have a youth club, please consider sending representatives to the 2020 Youth Leaders Workshop at Camp Kubena. It’s an excellent way to learn what the SPJST Youth Program has to offer.

The mission of the SPJST Youth Program is to provide opportunities for educational, patriotic, and social enrichment.

It’s also about having fun! Through participation in local youth clubs, district outings, and statewide events, youngsters between the ages of five and 18 develop leadership and social skills and achieve a greater awareness of the common bonds that we all share. The workshop will address each of these areas, with emphasis on the Summer Camp program, Youth Achievement Days, and opportunities for scholarships.

Spouses and children are cordially invited to attend as well. A service project is scheduled to run concurrently for the youth and spouses.

All of the informational sessions will take place on Saturday, March 21; however, attendees are invited to check in as early as 6 p.m. on Friday, March 20.

Light snacks and refreshments will be provided for the Friday night social.

There is no charge to participate in the program or to stay Friday and/or Saturday nights in the cabins. If you plan to stay in a cabin, you will need to bring your own pillow, sheets, and blanket.

Super Heroes Unite!

The SPJST Youth Program theme for 2020 is “Super Heroes Unite!” That theme will carry through into this year’s summer camp with an emphasis on identifying the super powers that reside in each of us. Some examples include: Enthusiasm, Trustworthiness, Creativity, Discipline, Patience, Respectfulness, Determination, and Dedication. You get the idea: feel free to add to that list!

The “Super Heroes Unite!” theme will be conveyed through projects in the Vestnik as well as through hands-on learning experiences — at the SPJST’s 2020 Leaders-in-Training (LIT) Retreat and at each of the 2020 summer sessions at Camp Kubena. The programing represents a determined effort to make our SPJST Youth Program and Society a more relevant and dynamic force in the lives of our members and the communities that they serve.

Camp Eligibility If your child has completed kindergarten, is a current youth club member, and has made seven out of 12 meetings, he or she will be eligible to attend camp at no charge.

Youth who attend lodges with no youth club can attend seven adult meetings and qualify to attend camp at no charge. The lodge secretary will need to provide the SPJST Home Office with copies of the membership roster of each meeting the youth attended.

Youth who have not made at least seven meetings may attend camp at the prorated rate of $35 per meeting missed.

The rate for attending camp with no meeting credits is $250. Youth can make up a meeting by attending another local youth club.

All campers must submit an online application to the State Fraternal Director no later than May 22. This application is available on the spjst.org website.

District Seven Spring Meeting Sunday, March 29, 2020 • Jourdanton Public Library Hosted by Lodge 202, Jourdanton SPJST District Seven Spring Meeting, hosted by Lodge 202 Jourdanton, is Sunday, March 29, 2020, at Jourdanton Public Library, located at 1101 Campbell Avenue, Jourdanton, Texas 78026.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m.

Breakfast pastries will be provided, and drinks will be furnished by Lodge 202 throughout the day. The lunch served at 12:15 p.m. will consist of an enchilada plate including rice, beans, and salad for $5. Various desserts will be provided.

The youth will be having a decorated rock contest. Please see the youth club handbook for details. The youth will have a planned activity. Each youth club is asked to bring an item for the district youth prize drawing.

100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive October 1 started the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive to bene-

fit the scholarship fund. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education.

Donations of any amount will be accepted and added to the general scholarship fund that is maintained by the Home Office. No amount is too small or too large. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive will run through March 31. So keep sending in your pennies!

2020 SPJST Flag Day Essay Contest Watch the Vestnik for more information pertaining to this year’s SPJST Flag Day Essay Contest. We are hoping you will share this with your children and grandchildren.

Join Hands Day Incentives May 2 marks the date for this year’s Join Hands Day. SPJST wants the lodges to invite other community organizations such as Lions Club, Volunteer Fire Departments, Kiwanis, Boy/Girl Scouts, etc.

The Supreme Lodge again will offer the $100 incentive to all lodges that register their projects with the Home Office.

You can do this by completing the Join Hands Day flyer and returning it to the SPJST Home Office. We ask you to share your photos and projects with the Vestnik.

State 42 Domino Tournament The SPJST State 42 Domino Tournament will take place on Saturday, April 4, 2020. The Tournament will be held at the SPJST Home Office in Temple, Texas.

All participants are encouraged to pre-register so we can get a count for the amount of food to prepare for the noon meal. The February 5, 2020, meeting of SPJST Lodge 9, Snook was called to order by President Donnie Hejl at 6:55 p.m. Sheila Orsak led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Roll of officers was called. Minutes from the January meeting were approved. Hall manager, treasurer, FAC, and state reports were presented.

The youth club’s community service was to bring non-perishable snack items for the school pantry. They also voted to give a $200 donation towards the pantry.

They will have a district outing on February 16 by going to the movies in Brenham.

Under old business, we discussed hosting the District One Spring Meeting on Sunday, April 19. The meal will be served from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., and we will serve chicken, beans, rolls, dessert, and tea.

Under new business, motions were passed to sponsor Little League Baseball and Softball, refund Snook 4-H for the use of the hall, and to purchase a new stamp for deposits.

Lodge 15, Buckholts remembers Loraine Kuzel Millian SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts held its quarterly meeting in January instead of December due to illness in our membership. President Mary Helen Rodriguez called the meeting to order and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. All officers were present. Sandie Fischer read the minutes of the last meeting.

A moment of silence was observed for departed member Loraine Kuzel Millian.

Loraine was a champion in support of our historic lodge and was very active in helping us get a new roof. A generous donation was given to our lodge in her memory by Marguerite Burtis, Peter and family. Marguerite was the niece of Lo-

raine and the daughter of our beloved Hilda Burtis, whom we miss dearly.

Discussion included review of our recent meatloaf meal fundraiser. Plans are for a pork chop meal fundraiser in late February or early March.

All officers agreed to continue in their present positions for the following year.

Lodge 20, Granger announces 2020 officers President Bridget Bohac called the meeting of Lodge 20, Granger to order and led members in the Pledge of Allegiance and the Lord’s Prayer.

Jvonne Elwood called roll, and all officers were present. She then read the December minutes. David Kerlin made a motion to accept the minutes as read.

Doris Bell seconded, and all members voted in favor.

Brenna gave the treasurer’s report.

Bridget reminded us that we need to collect for the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive at February’s meeting. She also informed us of upcoming tournaments and the spring meeting. Fraternal

reports will be submitted by Friday.

The lodge is due to renew its tax exemption status.

The youth club will be having a membership drive on February 9. Donations are being collected for Williamson County Animal Shelter.

Old business detailed building repairs. The floor has been completed, and roof repairs will begin in February.

For new business, Bridget has received the loan packet for the roof. Insurance has been paid, but taxes still need to be paid.

Lodge 24, Cyclone appreciates dance supporters Lodge 24, Cyclone met on Monday, February 10, 2020, at the lodge home of Flag Hall amid beautiful fields of winter wheat. The meeting was called to order

by President Daniel Wilde. He led the Pledge of Allegiance and had a silent prayer for the military, deceased members, and the government.

Margaret read the minutes of the last meeting, and they were accepted as presented. Linda Wilde gave a lengthly treasurer’s report about the New Year’s Eve dance and the Squeezebox dance.

Both were well attended. The Squeezebox dance net was the same as our Mother’s Day meal. Brenda Maddux then gave the fraternal report. March 7

is the state straight domino tournament in Temple at the Home Office, and April 4 is the regular 42 domino tournament.

The District Two Spring Meeting will be Sunday, March 15 at Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall. We are scraping under the $50,000 limit on the income tax. Carl Macek has the new cooler installed in the bar. It needs electricity and the cooling equipment, and it will be ready for use.

Sadly, we learned of the death of Carolyn Slovacek. Our sincere condolences to the family.

We are going to add on $20 to each

student that made the sale at the Bell County Livestock Show. They are Nash and Cade Campbell, Shelby Bruggman, and Jennifer Hoelscher. Our seniors this year will be granted $50 if they do not get a scholarship. They are Cade and Nash Campbell, Shelby Bruggman, John Michael Hoelscher, and Megan Malcik.

We voted to buy a one-half page ad in the convention book for $90.

Someone stole a circuit breaker off the stage, and Carl Macek replaced it.

Happy birthday to Linda Wilde on February 17th and Margaret’s grand-

daughter.

The Vrazels Tribute Band has about 600 tickets spoken for.

President Wilde thanked everyone who worked at the dances. We also appreciate all who come out to our dances.

Lodge 25, Ennis reports on January meeting Dear Members and Readers, Lodge 25, Ennis’ monthly members’ supper was held Thursday, January 9., 2020. Chicken with cream gravy over pasta along with garlic bread, broccoli salad, and peach bread pudding was prepared by Betty Macalik.

The monthly meeting was called to order at 7 p.m. by President JoAnn Jones.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Margaret Krajca. A moment of silence was observed in memory of Gregory Navarro Sr. and Mark Strunc. On the sick list were Frankie Svehlak and Amy Gurley.

VĚSTNÍK Pat Fowler read the minutes of the last meeting. Betty Macalik gave the financial and treasury reports. The bar income and expense statements were presented by Vice President Arlene Honza. FAC Kay Lynn Kovar reported on new activities, including the District Three Spring Meeting will be held at our lodge on Sunday, April 26. Youth Leader Rita Holland announced that the youth had an outing and meeting at ShowBiz Cinema in Waxahachie.

Old business included the purchase of a wifi extender and phone booster.

There was more discussion on improving the flagpole with approval to purchase a new American flag.

Special guest at the meeting was District Three Director John Engelke. He briefly took the floor to discuss the youth leaders’ workshop. He announced that the youth year has changed to reflect the same as a calendar year which started in January. He also discussed the upcoming Supreme Lodge meeting; explained the transition from printing the Vestnik from weekly to bimonthly; and talked about the upcoming 2020 Convention. He donated a beautiful prize basket for our annual fundraiser. Thank you, Mr. Engelke!

Lodge 54, West reports on November meeting The meeting of SPJST Lodge 54, West was held at St. Joseph Hall on Friday, November 1, 2019. The meeting was called to order at 7 p.m. by President Freddie Kaluza. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mr. Kaluza followed by a moment of silence for all our departed members, especially Mary Jane Urbanovsky and Logan Kaluza, twin infant son of Nathan and Leann Kaluza, who passed away since our last meeting. All officers and sales agents were present, and we had 17 members in attendance for the meeting. District Three Director John Engelke and wife Diane were special guests for the evening.

The minutes of the last meeting were read by Janice Kaluza. Marcela Vaculik made a motion to accept the minutes, and Mary Lou Mynar seconded the motion. Motion passed.

FAC Linda Kaluza let the members know the City of Temple would have a Christmas parade and tree lighting ceremony on Monday, December 2 if anyone would like to be a part of this celebration. Linda reminded all

High school graduates and undergraduates who are members of SPJST are eligible to apply for the scholarship. Czech Reporter Jan Vaculik stated nothing to report, but he asks that the members of our lodge pray for him because he has some medical issues and needs our prayers.

Vice President Wilburn Willis asked everyone to remember the Police Officers Night Out which was a huge success last year. He indicated West draws the largest crowd in McLennan County and received much support from the community. Air Evac will be a special part of the event and will be flying in and landing at the Westfest grounds, and there will be several activities for the

Brandon John Hoelscher graduated from Texas A&M University in College Station on Friday, December 13, 2019. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in manufacturing and mechanical engineering technology. Brandon is a member of Lodge 47, Seaton. Congratulations!

Rebuilding Lodge 48, Beyersville

The concrete slab has been completed at Lodge 48, Beyersville. The metal building has been delivered and is ready to be erected, Property Committee Chairman Larry Beran reported. However, the framing startup has been delayed due to the recent rains. Weather permitting, the framing will be complete in three to four weeks.

Santa is expected to arrive at 5:30 p.m. to visit with all the children, hand out goody bags, and take pictures with them. Before all guests leave, there will be several cash prize drawings with $800 total given out for adults and $200 total for the children. The lodge will provide a keg and soda beverages for refreshments. We will be decorating the hall on Sunday at 9 a.m. if anyone would like to help.

Under new business, we had one new certificate written up for Brent Theirmann, signed up by Freddie Kaluza.

Mary Lou Mynar made a motion to accept him as a new member, and Ronnie Kaluza seconded the motion. Motion passed. Ronnie Kaluza and Marcela Vaculik reported an audit was completed, and all the books for our lodge are in order. President Freddie Kaluza talked about the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive and wanted to know if we would like to contribute $100 to this

President Freddie Kaluza stated he would like to see a member of our lodge each year receive a $1,000 scholarship from Lodge 54 honoring a top graduate from our lodge. Director Engelke said we needed to talk to SPJST President Brian Vanicek to find out the proper way to set this up in determining the scholarship winner.

The 33rd SPJST Convention will be held June 14 to 16, 2020, in Killeen, and we need to elect four delegates. Janice Kaluza made a motion to elect Mary Lou Mynar, Marcela Vaculik, Ronnie Kaluza, and Linda Kaluza with Terry Sefcik as an alternate in case someone has to back out. Wilburn Willis seconded the motion. Motion passed.

Director Engelke also reminded us that the Temple Christmas Parade is December 2 and the Czech Heritage Museum will be having its open house with the Taylor Czech Chorus singing at this event.

Under other business, Special Funds Chairman Dan Natho said that Comcast has gone up on the price to have internet at the lodge. After some discussion, he will try to contact them to either go down on their price, or we will discontinue their services.

Lodge 84, Dallas to celebrate 110th anniversary on March 8 Dear Readers, Members of Lodge 84, Dallas met on Sunday, February 16, 2020, for their monthly meeting. The meeting was brought to order at 2:35 p.m. by Vice President Vicki Sims. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Flag Bearer Lynda Novak with a moment of silence afterwards for our departed members and troops serving our country. The minutes from last month were read by Secretary Cherri Petr, and they were accepted as read and approved by all present. Secretary Cherri then read correspondence from the Home Office.

Sunshine Committee reported that sympathy cards were sent to the family of Sister Olga Horak and Brother Robert Roach. May your loved ones rest in peace. I inadvertently forgot to mention that last month, a get well card was sent to Sister Jeraldine Becan. It was good to see her and Sister Estelle Smith back in attendance!

Lodge 80, Holland hosts Valentine’s Day Bingo

Youth Leader Lynda Novak then gave her report. The youth met on Sunday, February 9 for the annual Valentine’s Day visit to St. Joseph’s Nursing Center. They went to Wendy’s after their performance for the monthly meeting and social. Youth Leader Lynda reported she went over the rules of conduct form and had each youth sign a copy. She then updated everyone on the lodge anniversary celebration on Sunday, March 8. She encouraged everyone to participate in the President’s Service Award program, District Three Spring Meeting on Sunday, April 26, and District Three youth outing on Saturday, May 23. The youth then completed their Vestnik projects before adjourning.

Sister Lynda then gave her reports on the Czech Culture Committee and Fraternal Council.

Old business discussed was the monthly meeting and reports, the lodge’s upcoming 100th anniversary celebration, and plans for our April meeting and Easter celebration.

New business included electing delegates and alternates for the convention in June. We also discussed the size of advertisement to purchase for the convention souvenir program.

They were really surprised. But, that was not all! Several lucky folks also won a large Russell Stover valentine of assorted chocolates. They seemed very happy to win!

And to wish everyone a happy Valentine’s Day, all in attendance received gift bags with a cupcake, a chocolate kiss, a sucker, and M&Ms. We appreciate our bingo folks!

The monthly meeting of Lodge 87, Temple was called to order by President Sidney Kacir on Sunday, February 16, 2020, at 2 p.m. Vice President/FAC Linda Hopper led members in the Pledge of Allegiance. Member Donna Waskow led a moment of silence in memory of our founding fathers and other departed lodge members.

Gary Waskow, lodge hall and grounds maintenance/repair person, attended our meeting, and members expressed their gratitude for the great work he has been doing.

A motion was made and seconded, and the vote carried unanimously, for the lodge to make a community outreach donation in memory and honor of Calvin Whatley with plans for the donated funds to be provided to Scott Elementary in Temple in support of the playground to help benefit youth.

Lodge 117, Robstown meets March 7 Dear SPJST Members, SPJST Lodge 117, Robstown will hold its quarterly meeting on March 7, 2020. The meeting will be held at Hilltop Community Center, 11345 Leopard in Corpus Christi. Meeting time is 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Lodge 141, Sealy welcomes district sales agent Lodge 141, Sealy President Rick Martinez called the meeting to order beginning with the Pledge of Allegiance.

This was followed by roll call of officers. The minutes of the previous meeting and the treasurer’s report were both approved.

President Rick reported on the District One Sales Training on February 3 at College Station. The Home Office had sent us information on advertising in the convention booklet. Members approved a “well wish” line at a cost of $10. Other donations were also approved - $100 to the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive and $100 to Gordon Memorial Library for the use of its meeting room.

District One Regional General Agent (RGA) Jim Schroeder gave us an update on the increase in sales in District One. There are 32 agents in this district.

Lodge 180, Burleson changes meeting time Lodge 180, Burleson held its monthly meeting on February 4, 2020, at Burleson Police Station on Wilshire.

The meeting was brought to order by President Nancy Kelly followed the Pledge of Alliance and a moment of silent prayer.

President Kelly mentioned that a Veteran was hitchhiking across several counties in route to a VA Hospital for treatment in Alabama. He was carrying an oxygen tank for life support as he made his way to the hospital, and it would be a one-way trip of 100 miles.

His only means of conveyance was to walk. He was stopped by a sheriff’s deputy and transported to the next county line after the disabled Veteran explained why he was having to walk. He was then transported to the next county line and then on to the next county line. He was taken to the hospital and the return trip back to his home was accomplished in the same manner, just reverse order.

This achievement was accomplished by these three sheriff’s deputies (and perhaps others helped as well as much communication took place to set up the meetings, etc.). Thanks to these people who helped someone that worked to help care for us and our country.

Lodge 186, Caldwell invites members to attend March 10 special-called meeting Dear Members, Greetings and best wishes to you and your family for a happy and prosperous 2020.

Since the discontinuation of bingo at the SPJST Lodge 186, Caldwell hall, lodge leaders have been considering the sale of the lodge building as a way for the lodge to capitalize on the significant equity that exists in the property. Correspondingly, and in accordance with Supreme Lodge operational procedures, a special-called meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 10, 2020, at 6 p.m. to discuss, consider, and vote on the proposed sale. The meeting will take place at the lodge hall, located at 937 State Highway 36 South in Caldwell. All adult members are encouraged to attend and to weigh in on the discussion.

SPJST officials, including Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek and District One Director Donnie Victorick, will be in attendance.

Fort Worth Friendship Club Our telephone committee has been getting a work out! The February 5, 2020, meeting was postponed until February 12 due to a weather forecast of snow and ice, which didn’t happen.

Thank you, ladies, for keeping everyone informed. You have been doing a great job!

The meeting was called to order by President Barbara Becknell, and all were welcomed. Our guest was James Schaffer, son of Mary and Gary Schaffer, and Mary’s husband Gary joined the Club. Also Elizabeth Creamer introduced her friend Gail Bartin who was a guest. So glad to have you, Gail and James, and so glad to have Gary as a new member. The Pledge of Allegiance was said by all.

It was voted to dispense with the reading of the minutes. Treasurer Margaret Sears gave the financial report which was approved as presented.

Dues were collected for 2020, and new membership booklets were distributed. Thanks to Margaret for the great job she did on the membership booklets.

The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to our January and February celebrants - Claire Keighley, Darlene Tompkins, and Lynn Cummings who had January birthdays and to Linda Powell and Shirley Martin who had February birthdays. May all of you have many more.

Everyone was reminded that if Fort Worth ISD is closed for bad weather and if this falls on a day for our meeting, we will not have a meeting.

Sunshine person Darlene Tompkins reported sending sympathy cards to the family of Agnes Michel Saldana who passed away on January 21 and to Debbie Skrasek, whose mother Velma Jo Eakin Burns passed away on January 3.

Get well cards were sent to Victor Martin, and Rose Ann and Jimmy Spann.

Thinking of you cards were sent to Lupe Garcia, and Jim and Jo Ann Wilcox, and a birthday card was sent to homebound member Betty Landsfeld who celebrated her 96th birthday on January 13.

Our heartfelt sympathies go to the Saldana family and to Debbie’s family. Memorial masses will be said at St. Thomas Church for Agnes, and a donation will be made to Meals on Wheels in memory of Debbie’s mother. Kathy Thome reported that Tracy Horn is doing well and sends greetings to all her Friendship Club friends. Libbie Vrla reported the masses at St. Andrews Church were said for Adele Strand in January and that she attended. Thank you notes were read from the Saldana family and from Father Matthews for the Christmas donation.

It was reported that Elizabeth Creamer who became 100 years young last November, rode in a “100 day of school” parade wearing her 100-year birthday sash and tiara. I believe this was at her granddaughter’s school.

Sounds like it was a fun day!

We had 11 door prizes and congratulations to those of us that won. I was one. Special thanks go out to Lydia Alholm who sent us a package to use as a door prize. She hasn’t been coming to our meetings, but we do appreciate the gifts to use as door prizes. We all love presents. Winners of the 50/50 dollar games were Mary Ann Krivanek and Margaret Hoenig. Congratulations!

Following the meeting, Grace was said and all enjoyed the fried chicken lunch. Then games were played. Next meeting will be on March 4.

In Memory of Mildred Holeman Mildred Maxine Holeman, age 93, surrounded by family and friends, burst through heaven’s gates on February 12, 2020, at 10:20 p.m. She was a force, a brilliant, creative, loving, and complex mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend. Mildred was born in Smart’s Bottom, between Logansport, Louisiana, and Carthage, Texas. She had dif- Mildred Holeman ficulty getting her passport because the address was in Louisiana, yet she was actually born in Texas to newly widowed Gracie Neal.

Mildred attended Carthage schools and was mentored by loving teachers who realized her poverty and her genius. Her story is a true overcomer’s story.

Mildred came to Houston as soon as she could. She worked several jobs, but the one that really paid off was as a waitress at Simpson’s Dining Car, where she met her husband Billie Jack Holeman. Together, they raised four children with the help of her mother. Mildred was a working mother with an insatiable desire to succeed and live a life that counts. She worked as a legal secretary for attorney L.A. Kucera for 35 years where she was not only trained in law, but also became involved with SPJST Lodge 88, Houston. Because of everything Mr. Kucera taught her, Mildred developed a real estate and an insurance business and served on many governing boards. She spent many years continuing to help his clients and their families, all who became her extended family.

Love God, love people, know your gifts, serve your community was her MO. She could never say “No.” She was the fundraising queen for her beloved church, Our Savior Lutheran. Her civic service included Shepherd Park Civic Club, Houston and Texas Association of Legal Secretaries (president), SPJST Lodge 88, Houston (board chairman and others), and Czech Heritage Museum in Temple, Texas (board member). One of her greatest joys was being selected as

the 2015 Carthage ISD Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame.

“Reflecting back on my life, I must profess the goodness of God in my life. I know that God had His hand on my head since my birth. He knew me in my mother’s womb as I was being knitted together. He knew me and what I would do with my life. He has been gracious to me at all times, whether I was accepting second-hand clothes in Carthage, or washing the school cafeteria’s towels at home and waiting for them to dry on the wood heater overnight to take back to school in return for a free lunch (I generated my own free lunch program).

When I was young, I was ashamed of it.

Today, I am grateful. I am grateful that God has allowed me to live, to teach Bible classes, to be an encourager, to pray for and help the sick and needy, and to do all these things I could not have done them without the wonderful people God has put in my path. No matter how many bad things befall us, we know that God is in charge, and through his son Jesus Christ we are all healed. I know that even greater things await all of us when we are reunited in Heaven. How great will that be?

Visitation was Sunday, February 16 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Pat H. Foley Funeral Home in Houston. Celebration of life was held Monday, February 17 at 11 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Houston.

In Memory of Eugene Slovak His mischievous grin and the twinkle in his eye have now passed from this world. Eugene Henry Slovak, age 86, died peacefully, Sunday, February 2, 2020, at his home in West, Texas, with his beloved wife, Martha Frances (Nors) Slovak, by his side.

A rosary was recited at 6 p.m.

Monday, February 3 at Aderhold FuEugene Slovak neral Home Chapel in West, followed by visitation until 8 p.m. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 4:30 p.m.

Tuesday, February 4 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption in West with Reverend Timothy Vaverek as celebrant. Military graveside rites followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery, conducted by West Veterans Honor Guard.

Eugene was a jokester and a strict disciplinarian - all in the same person.

He held his children to high standards, and was just as affectionate when he wrestled with his young children in the yard or around the house.

He attended Waco Technical High School. While he did not graduate from high school, he earned his GED before going into the service; he proudly displayed the insignias on his truck of all the various colleges his many grandchildren attended, because he thought education was so important.

He loved his wife and entreated his children to take care of her after he leaves this earth. He remembered seeing her for the first time at a dance in West, in her polka-dotted dress. He said he fell in love that night. They were married June 24, 1957.

Eugene was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption in West. He was also a member of American Legion Post 479; SPJST Lodge 66, Waco; American Welding Society; West Kiwanis Club; Waco Wholesale Credit Association; West Hospital Authority Board; St. Mary’s PTO; founding member of Hilltop Water Supply; original shareholder of West Fraternal Auditorium; and more.

He served his country during the Korean War, working in the engine pool.

Monday, February 24, 2020 he could fix anything. Duct tape and WD40 were his friends for his go-to temporary fix until he could figure out a solution. Then he would find a part - or build one - to get an old engine running.

He has refurbished many old cars, and was baffled when he found one tiny screw left over. He never figured out where it went in his red rag-top 1964 Corvair.

Eugene worked at Davis Iron Works for 30 years and was mentored by owner Jack Davis, who saw something in Eugene in his youth. Eugene rose to become vice president of the company and worked as a salesman, traveling all over the United States.

When he left Davis Iron Works, he went to McLennan Community College, to get his associate’s degree. He became a real estate agent then a broker as he established Slovak Realty in West and worked in real estate for 20 years. He always questioned why someone in college to study real estate had to study Freud. He never figured out that question, but excelled in his classes anyway.

Eugene joined parents Henry J. and Teresie Zofie (Dvorak) Slovak and sister Margaret in Heaven, and is hoping that his foster child Bopeep Catalan jumps into his arms. He is also predeceased by brother-in-law Laddie Nors; sister-in-law Bennie Marie Zajicek and her husband Walter; and brother-in law John Gaines.

He is survived by wife Martha; children Bernard Slovak and wife Ruth of West, Cyndy Slovak-Barton and husband Jeff Barton of Buda, Martha “Cookie” Smith and husband Marty of West, Sandra Kettler and husband Rick of West, Dan Slovak and wife Kelly of Kyle, and Ronnie Slovak and wife Allison of New Braunfels; sister Doris Gaines of San Antonio and her daughter Kimberley Hoelscher and husband Mark of San Antonio; and sister-in-law Mary Ann Walker of West; and godson Gene Louis Zajicek.

Grandsons serving as pallbearers included James Herring, Nick Slovak, Chris Schubnell, Zach Barton, Blake Kettler, and Calvin Kettler. Honorary pallbearers were other grandchildren Kim Herring Myers, Marcus Slovak, Michael Holler, Caity Moore, Stephanie Moore, Bozena Barton, Joshua Smith, Tiffany Lowe, Noel Watson, Maddison Kettler, Sarah Slovak, and Ashley Slovak. He had a special place in his heart for his grand-cats Annie and Midnight.

Eugene had 21 great-grandchildren.

Expression of Sympathy The members of Karel Jonáš, Lodge 28, East Bernard, express our sympathy to the family of GLENN WAYNE PRIBYL, age 59, of East Bernard, Texas, was called to the Lord on Thursday, January 23, 2020, after a longtime battle with extended health problems.

Memorial service was held Tuesday, January 28 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Knesek Funeral Home.

He was born on May 21, 1960, in Glenn Pribyl East Bernard at Schuhmann Hospital to Leo and Bernice Miller Pribyl.

Glenn grew up in the East Bernard area, attended East Bernard schools, and graduated in 1978. He worked at Johnson/Schlumberger in Sugar Land and at BAE Systems Technology in Sealy as a warehouse forklift driver.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge

Glenn married Lynn Bubela in 1989.

The couple lived in East Bernard and had two children - Christopher and Timothy.

He was a sweet and gentle person who never complained and was always concerned for those he loved.

Glenn enjoyed going on fishing trips with his Dad and brothers Alan and Mark. He also enjoyed goose hunting with his longtime friend Leon Jasek.

One of Glenn’s favorite things to do was watch football. His two favorite teams to watch were the Texas Longhorns and especially, his beloved Dallas Cowboys.

His favorite music entertainer was George “The Possum” Jones, a country music singer.

Glenn was a beloved son, brother, father, uncle, and grandfather.

He is survived by his loving mother Bernice Miller Pribyl of East Bernard; son Christopher Pribyl and Ashley West and granddaughter Naomi of Conroe; son Timothy Pribyl of Wichita Falls; brother Alan Pribyl and wife Cindy of East Bernard; brother Mark Pribyl of Angleton; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.

Preceding him in death was his father Leopold Pribyl.

He is at home with God and our Lord Jesus Christ. We will all dearly miss him. May he rest in peace.

2020 American Camp Association Conference Thank you to the American Camp Association (ACA) member who organized this conference. Camp Kubena Director Rob Clift and I attended the New Director Orientation Training session the first day. We met many other new camp directors that were attending the session.

The discussions were about leadership and supervision. We examined different leadership styles, authority, and responsibilities. We also attended the ACA Accreditation Process Workshop, and I now understand why it is important to have an accredited camp. I attended numerous breakout sessions on building leaders, epic team building, marketing, positioning, and explaining summer camp to non-camp families.

time and discussion around the campfire, weather permitting. We will have snacks, fun interactive games, etc. Registration is from 7 to 8 p.m. on Friday evening. On Saturday, we will kick off at 8:45 a.m. with breakfast. At 10 a.m., we will review the 2020 youth handbook, outside training, and team building.

Youth leaders, your young children are welcome to come with you to the Youth Leaders Workshop. We will have programs for them during the time you are in the workshop. Bring your spouses as well. We have a service project to build water jug holders to place throughout the camp. There are also horseshoes, washers, and disc golf available to enjoy at camp.

Camp Kubena Director Rob Clift will be certified in training the Child Welfare and Protection training in 2020. SPJST will not be using the Expert Online training any more. All SPJST youth leaders and chaperones need this training due to working with youth. All are welcome to come during this training. If you have a certification through your church or other organization, such as 4-H, FFA, or FCCLA, I will accept a copy of that certification and keep it on file here in the office and for camp. Rob will also be giving this training the first day of each camping session.

All youth leaders are required to attend. If you are not able to attend, please start looking for someone who would be willing to attend on your behalf and the lodge. Also, please note that if your lodge is interested in starting a youth club, you are more than welcome to send a representative from your lodge to this event.

Come to Camp Kubena We want you to come join us at Camp Kubena! Fun times are ahead! We are extending a special invitation to SPJST youth who are not part of a lodge youth club and the youth who are new to SPJST. If you have a life insurance certificate issued before May 31, 2020, you can come join us at camp! Camp is a great place to make new friends and build selfconfidence. Camp Kubena offers swimming, games, high ropes courses, low ropes courses, BB guns, archery, disc golf, and many other activities.

Qualifications for camp: If your child has completed kindergarten, is a current youth club member, and has made seven out of 12 meetings, he/she will be eligible to attend camp without pay.

Youth that attend lodges with no

youth club can attend seven adult meetings and qualify for camp without pay.

The lodge secretary will need to provide the Home Office with copies of the membership roster of each meeting the youth attended.

Youth who have not made at least seven meetings will be prorated $35 per meeting missed. Youth can make up a meeting by attending another local youth club. Please see your youth leader about this.

Parents and grandparents, please know your child or grandchild can go to camp if they are finishing kindergarten to high school senior this year for $250 — as long as they have a current SPJST life insurance certificate that is in force.

Parents and grandparents if you have a certificate that is in force and your child or grandchild does not have one, he or she can still go to camp for $350. This is the first year we are offering camp to youth without a life insurance certificate.

This amount is reasonable compared to other Texas camps which start at $745 per week of camp.

100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive Please remember to keep sending in your pennies for the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive. All young people who donate at least $2 will receive two merit points. All young people who donate at least $5 will also receive a certificate. Youth leaders, if you do not have any of the 100 Pennies slips, please feel free to accept the donation and send it in on a piece of paper. Please be sure to include the name of the person making the donation and the amount of their donation.

The April Vestnik Project will be about Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman to be appointed to the United States Supreme Court.

Join Hands Day—Saturday, May 2 Our goal for 2020 is to have 50 or more lodges participate. What can your youth club do? Some of the great projects from past years included baking for the needy, cemetery clean-ups, highway beautification, assisting veterans and senior citizens programs and a fundraiser for your local volunteer fire department.

You’ve still got plenty of time to decide what you want to do in 2020. The main thing — at this point — is committing to doing something. If you have any questions on this, please contact me.

Again, this year, the Supreme Lodge will offer a $100 incentive to local SPJST lodges to be used in developing and/or promoting their project. This incentive will be for lodges who partner with youth in their community. To receive the $100 incentive, lodges must register the event with the Home Office.

Merit Points and Due Dates Please know we are having an ongoing problem with youth leaders who do not turn in the merit points to the Home Office by the due date. Reports are always due by the 15th of the month after the quarter is over. If the points are not turned in starting the first quarter (January through March 2020) then you will only be hurting your youth. The youth club will forfeit its money for the quarter, and the youth will not receive their points—and they will not receive it in a different quarter as well.

Most of the time everyone is good about getting this to us in a timely manner. I’m sorry I have to be so blunt, but Tammy and I have many responsibilities with the Youth Department and adult fraternal areas of SPJST. If there is a reason you are having a problem submitting the information, please contact me. I am here to help you with this issue.

Decorated Rock Contest Please encourage your youth to attend their district spring meeting and participate in the decorated rock contest. All members who attend their district spring meeting will receive five points in the merit point contest. All contest participants will receive a participation award, and youth club members will receive another five merit points in the merit point system.

The Decorated Rock Contest is sponsored by SPJST to encourage youth members to be creative and express their artistic talents. The contest is held at the district spring meeting. Youth must be present to win. All SPJST members entering kindergarten to high school senior are welcome to participate in the contest.

The Rules Contestants will decorate a rock that must fit in the palm of a hand for the contest. You may decorate the rock however you like. Use your imagination!

Judging Rocks will be judged according to the following criteria: Creative Ability, Skill and Design, Appearance, and Neatness.

participants will receive a participation award, and youth club members will receive five merit points in the Merit Point System. The first place winning rocks from each district will be featured in a display case in the SPJST Home Office lobby through the end of the youth year.

Earhart developed a passion for adventure at a young age, steadily gaining flying experience from her twenties. In 1928, Earhart became the first female passenger to cross the Atlantic by airplane while accompanying pilot Wilmer Stultz for which she achieved celebrity status.

Texans may be surprised to learn that Earhart earned some of her flying chops going in and out airfields in the Lone Star State. Earhart’s time in Texas received little notice, only one mention by a reporter was made of her time at the Brownsville airport. That’s because so much attention went to Charles Lindbergh at the time. Brownsville Airport offered pilots-in-training a unique advantage and the airport served as the international gateway to Latin America at the time. It was March of 1929 when Charles Lindbergh flew the first international airmail from Brownsville to Mexico City and Amelia was there.

The draw for aviators to the Brownsville Airport back then was its reputation as the center of instrument training for those who wanted to fly internationally.

Pilots from around the world came to Texas, including Mexico’s Las Aguilas Aztecas – the Aztec Eagles – who flew practice flights at Brownsville and San Antonio during World War II. If you wanted to fly for PanAm you went to Brownsville for your training. Earhart became the fourth American woman to earn her commercial transport license at Brownsville and also flew the Pitcairn PCA-2 autogyro. This is the precursor to the helicopter in Texas in 1931.

As perhaps a foreshadowing to her final, ill-fated flight, Texas is also the site of an Earhart accident. In 1931 Earhart crashed in Abilene, Texas, a sign of her possible lack of adequate training at the expense of her promotional activities.

It was surprising she could get sponsorships having crashed every airplane she ever flew.

On July 2, 1937 while Earhart and Noonan were flying in the South Pacific Ocean on their second attempt on their World Flight — their last transmission was around 7:42 a.m. near Howland Island.

Lodge 20, Granger youth expresses thanks to Patsy

On Sunday, February 2, 2020, at 9:30 a.m., Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club met at Taiton Community Center. Members brought blankets for the Angels Home Health blanket drive. Youth Leader Lisa Bubela reminded members that camp registration is now open, and that a youth workshop will be held Sunday, February 23 in Needville. The youth then cleaned Taiton Hall in preparation for the annual chicken dinner. A hot dog lunch was enjoyed by all.

Thank you, Patsy! We had fun at our annual District Two Skating Party. It’s not easy work to coordinate everything like you do. We appreciate everything you do.

Lodge 47, Seaton youth visits residents at nursing home We had our February youth club meeting at the memory care nursing home in Temple so we could visit with the residents and hand out valentine cards. Nursing homes can be kind of sad, but it’s cool that we can visit and make their day a little better. The little kids in our group were really excited and tried to talk to everyone.

Lodge 47, Seaton youth plays in snow I got to play in the snow today. It was really cold. I made one snow angel. I made 20 snowballs. I made a pigeon for storytime craft today in the library.

Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club shares February Activities Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club went to see Dr. Doolittle on Sunday, February 9, 2020, at Show Biz Cinema in Waxahachie. After the movie, we met and discussed how Stephen F. Austin is considered the “Father of Texas” bringing more than 300 families to Texas in early 1825. We also talked about Dr. Josef Bergmann,

who is described as the “father” of Czech immigration to Texas. He wrote letters back to the Czech lands encouraging people to come to America.

Our annual fundraiser was held on Saturday, February 15. The big winner of the Kubota was Lisa Lipscomb. Congratulations to her and to all the winners. A

Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club visits nursing facility for Valentine’s Day Dear Readers, The youth of Lodge 84, Dallas met on Sunday, February 9, 2020, at St. Joseph’s nursing facility for the annual Valentine’s Day celebration. After our program performance and presenting flowers for the altar to Sister, we went to Wendy’s.

Our meeting was brought to order by Youth Leader Lynda Novak at 3:30 p.m.

We then recited the Pledge of Allegiance and youth club motto and held a moment of silence for departed members and troops serving our country. Youth Leader Lynda updated us on the President’s Service Award program, District Three Spring Meeting on April 26, District Three outing on May 23, summer camp, and SPJST Convention. She discussed Youth Achievement Day (YAD) cards and the deadline date for submission along with the food category and photography category subjects. We then worked on Vestnik Projects before adjourning to dine on hamburgers and Frosty’s.

I hope to see you all at our lodge’s 110th anniversary on Sunday, March 8!

It was my first year showing pigs, and it went really well.

I showed a Berkshire and a Cross.

My Cross is a plain black pig, and my Berk was white and black.

I really had fun, but neither of my pigs placed so I was bummed about that. It was just my first year to show so I’m going to wait for next year.

Nadace CEFT pokračuje v nadějné práci Jan Vaculík Čtvrtletní a výroční pravidelná schůze České vzdělavací nadace státu Texasu se konala dne 18. ledna 2020 v budově Hlavní úřadovny Slovanské podporující jednoty státu Texasu v Temple, Tx. za poměrně příjemného počasí..

Podporující jednota věnovala nemalou částku na opravu bu dovy v minulých letech a nyní se ukazuje, že prostorné místnosti je možno využít ke schůzím s větším počtem účastníků. Jednota vždy přichystá malé občerstvení jako snídani, protože mnozí ředitelé vyjeli ze svých domovů za časného rána a nemohli doma posnídat. V úřadovně si vzali koláč a kávu a mohli se dodatečně nasytit. Jednota připraví také něco na oběd, takže schůze může po krátké přestávce pokračovat i po obědě. Toto tradiční uspořádání vyhovuje po všech stránkách přítomným na schůzi nadace. .Nadace je vděčná jednotě za její phostinství vůči naším členům.

Za nepřítomnosti presidenta nadace Woody Smitha zahájil schůzi vicepresident Ray Lenart, složili jsme přísahu vlajce Spojených států amerických a republice, pro kterou stojí, také jsme uctili památku zemřelých členů. Pastor Dr. Mark Dlabaj přednesl modlibu, aby nám nebeský Otec požehnal a opatroval nás při cestě domů. Mezi našimi hosty byli studenti za doprovodu Johna Kolmana Pavel Duba a Robert Konečný a studentka Anna Králová, kteří studují na okresní universitě ve Wacu, Tx. Pravidelně na výměnu přijíždí rok co rok studenti z Moravy a připomínám jim, aby se podívali do světa, až ukončí vzdělání, aby nabyli zkušenosti, jak se co dělá ve světě. Na zahájení schůze jsme také zazpívali s pomocí studentů z Moravy českou národní hymnu.

Dr. Dlabaj obdržel odměnu za práci pro naši nadaci v podobě diplomu našich zakladatelů Dra. Mareše, Kacíře a Skřivánka. Pastor Mark Dlabaj pracuje po dlouhou dobu pro nadaci a je naším duchovním správcem nadace.

Během léta minulého troku se podílel na organisaci prvního účastníka hudebního festivalu Round Top, Tx. Jaroslava Škuty, klarinetisty, který pokračuje ve studiu v Clevelandu, Oh. Závě rem zprávy zdůraznil, že naše nadace vykonala velký díl práce pro naši veřejnost a proto je povin ností každého vlastence podpořit nadaci i v budoucnosti.

V této soivislosti je nutné pokračovat se zprávou profesora Thomase Sovíka, který je hybnou sílou všech podniků a úspěchů, kterých nadace dosáhla na Severotexaské universitě. Hned na jaře tohoto roku uspořádá katedra koncert kytaristy z Janáčkovy akademie músických umění a pošlou dva studenty z Dentonu do Brna.

Představitelka Lišky Bystroušky Bree Nichols byla podpořena universitou při její disertační práci na rozšíření repertoáru jazyků, ve kterých universita představuje opery. Český jazyk je velmi zpěvný a tak Bree se pokusí pro svou disertační práci pořídit kolekci písní s patřičnou výslovností a pak ji pokytne jako publikaci pro operní profesory v Americe. Tím se naruší navyklá podoba zpěvu oper v německo-francouzskoitalském jazyce, Denton se může stát světovým střediskem české opery v Americe.

Vicepresidentka nadace Diane Wilson Śulák podala zprávu o průběhu získávání nových členů a dalších vnitřních záležitostech nadace. Jako přípavu na výroční schůzi opatřila patřičný počet pozvánek na schůzi spolu s propagačním materiálem. Jen malý počet obálek byl vrácen s chybami v adrese, takřka dvě stě pozvánek bylo rozesláno. V roce 2019 se přihlásilo 34 nových členů kromě 20 nových ccloživotních členů, takže. 80 členů nadace je celoživotních a tito a i obyčejní členové by měli zahájit osobní kampaň pro získání nových členů pro nadaci..

Slovak language program to be offered at University of Pittsburgh Dear Friends, We are very excited to offer a unique intensive Slovak summer program at the University of Pittsburgh’s Slavic East European, and Near Eastern Summer Language Institute (SLI) that includes a study abroad option in Bratislava. Significant scholarship funding is available for 2020, and all applicants to the Slovak courses are eligible.

The Slavic department at the University of Pittsburgh prides itself as being a principal center for the teaching of Slovak language and culture in all of North America. SLI is the only US-based summer intensive program to offer Slovak at the beginning through advanced levels.

We particularly want to share with you the news that for the summer of 2020, we have developed a new partnership with Comenius University’s renowned Studia Academica Slovaca for our 10-week hybrid program, offering six weeks of intensive Slovak at SLI in

Pittsburgh (a city proud of its deep cultural ties to Slovakia) followed by 4 weeks of continued language study and cultural immersion in Bratislava. Students may also choose to attend just the Pittsburgh course during a given summer. Dr. Kamenarova, a leading expert in Slovak pedagogy and the author of the most widely used Slovak textbook, will be in attendance as an instructor in Pittsburgh and serve as the students’ guide in Bratislava. Czech Heritage Society of Texas Victor Peter Memorial Scholarship The Victor Peter Memorial Scholarship is a $500 scholarship granted by The Czech Heritage Society of Texas to a graduating Texas high school senior.

The money is given to the recipient upon proof of registration in a program of studies at a college or university.

The applicant must submit the following: 1. A copy of his or her high school transcript.

2. Two letters of recommendation.

One should be from a high school teacher attesting to the student’s academic promise. The other should be from an adult attesting to the student’s interest in Czech culture.

3. A 200-word autobiography (Times New Roman font, 14 point, one-inch margins on a separate sheet of paper.)

4. A 100-word statement explaining what he or she plans to study in college or university, and what he or she plans to do in terms of a career. Include the name of the college or university you plan to attend. (Times New Roman font, 14 point, one inch margins on a separate sheet of paper) 5. A list briefly explaining up to 10 ways in which he or she has had contact with Czech culture or The Czech Heritage Society of Texas organization. The list should be in order of importance, with the first item as the most important.

Even seemingly small things may be included, such as learning how to make kolaches or visiting Czech festivals.

Taylor Czech Chorus Scholarship The Taylor Czech Chorus has established a $500 scholarship to be awarded to a graduating senior of Czech descent.

The selected recipient will have the scholarship paid to the accredited college or university of his/her choice. All graduating 2019-2020 seniors who are eligible candidates and that meet the following criteria are urged to apply.

1) Graduating senior in the 2019-20 school year.

2) Have a minimum high school GPA equivalence of 3.0 on a 4-point scale.

3) Provide documentation of Czech heritage. Possible forms of documentation which can show Czech lineage include, but are not limited to: a. birth certificates of generations showing Czech name(s), b. family tree, c. Baptismal certificates of ancestors authenticating heritage, d. docket from immigration ship(s), e. ancestor’s passport(s) or visa(s).

4) Include a 300- to 400-word, typed, double-spaced essay defining why you think you should be selected for this scholarship, how your Czech heritage has influenced you, and what your heritage means to you.

5) The recipient must live no farther than 25 miles from Taylor, Texas (exception: a relative of a Taylor Czech Chorus member).

6) The recipient must be willing to attend a meeting of the Taylor Czech Chorus in Taylor, Texas, to receive the scholarship award.

Perhaps you open the church bulletin or you are in a meeting; a holiday is coming; whatever the occasion might be, you need to prepare a special dish or dessert. What is your “go to” recipe(s)? Will you share it with us?

It is hard to believe the Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) will be celebrating it’s 20th anniversary in January 2021. As the saying goes, “My,

where did the time go?” As with any special occasion, plans are made and action begins in order to achieve the goal of completing those plans. One such goal for our anniversary is a new cookbook.

Our first cookbook, Tribute To Czech Cooks, sold out almost before it was received. A second order was placed, ending with the same results. While we paid tribute to Czech cooks in general, the cookbook’s main focus was on recipes of ancestors and articles on them as well.

With this cookbook, we are calling for your delicious, special recipes. You know - it is the dish or dishes you prepare that are always requested. It may be for a special main dish, vegetable, salad, cake, pie, bread/rolls, etc., prepared as only you can, to taste that certain way.

However, please do not get us wrong. If you did not have the opportunity to submit an ancestor’s recipe in the Tribute To Czech Cooks Cookbook, please feel free for it to be included in our upcoming Cooking With Czech Recipes Cookbook.

Attention, Czech men! We know you are excellent cooks be it in the kitchen or the outdoor grill. You have your special “tricks” for giving the dish you prepare your own unique taste. Just know, we look forward to including your recipes, too.

This cookbook will also be special in that we invite you to include photos photos of the person preparing the dish; the dish preparation process, and/or the finished dish or dessert. While the photos you submit will be in color, in the cookbook, they will be black and white.
