ake A Difference Day is Saturday, October 26. It’s a day to improve the lives of others. This national day of doing good started on February 29, 1992, where the idea for a national day of service came to fruition.

Since then, the day has been held on the fourth Saturday of every October. According to the website, “Make A Difference Day shows that anyone, no matter of age or background, can make an impact on their community. Thousands of projects take place every October. Some large, many small. But each effort makes an important difference to our communities.”

So, how can you participate in Make A Difference Day? It’s easy! Think about a project that will improve the lives of others in your community. How can you make a difference? Here are a few suggestions: organize a food drive; lead a clothing drive; coordinate a recycling event; arrange a 5K benefit walk. If you can’t start your own project, you can always volunteer with a service organization in your community. Another idea - help those in need. Participate in Make A Difference Day by helping out an elderly or disabled person for a day. You can help them run errands, with chores, or even clean up their house or yard.

According to Points of Light’s website, Make A Difference Day contributes 250,000 service projects in 30 different countries with 30 million hours of volunteer service a year, equating to a $635 million annual dollar value of volunteer hours.

This national day of service gives people a chance to take a day out of their year to give back to the world. So, if you’re looking for a chance to improve the lives of others, Saturday, October 26 is your chance.

SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration We were blessed with a beautiful day on Saturday, October 5 in Seaton, Texas, and the 14th Annual SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration was a very successful event. Thanks to all who assisted with, participated in, and supported the event. We will include a summary and photos in an upcoming Vestnik.

Great Leadership is So Much More Than a Title

By Brian Vanicek SPJST President In my previous column, “Fraternal Leaders Meet to Learn, Collaborate in Washington, D.C.,” I made reference to a book that was distributed to SPJST officers, directors, and the Editor/Director of Communication at our September 10 and 11 strategic planning process. The book in reference was The Essential Wooden: A Lifetime of Lessons on Leaders and Leadership by John Wooden and Steve Jamison.

It’s a great book and one that helped to remind me how important a role that each of us as SPJST leaders play.

Most people know the legendary Coach Wooden for the 10 college basketball championships (including four perfect seasons) his UCLA Bruins Men’s Basketball Team won while he was head coach from 1948 until 1975. Apart from his coaching accolades, Coach Wooden was known for the gold standard he set for leadership. His ability to transform individual players into winning teams transcends the game of basketball.

Whether you’re talking basketball or fraternalism, the fundamental rules of the game apply. It takes great leadership to build great teams. That applies as much to our youth clubs as it does to our mother lodges and the activities of our Supreme Lodge. Great leadership is so much more than a title . . . Leaders are ready and willing to assess the situation and correct their course if necessary and establish standards of performance that are constantly being achieved.

It sounds so easy, doesn’t it? What can confound the situation are leaders — who hold the title — but lack the self-discipline to plan or to execute the plan with finesse. The “secret ingredient,” I believe as that applies to SPJST, is the importance of maintaining a “fraternal” frame of mind. Whether we’re talking youth

club, mother lodge, or Supreme Lodge, team building requires a keen understanding and appreciation of the players you’ve been dealt. In that regard, team building requires the management of egos and the ability to take advantage of strengths.

“There is great strength in gentleness — perhaps the greatest strength of all,” says Coach Wooden. “Without it, your leadership begins to resemble the approach of a prison guard standing watch over a chain gang. Turn your back, and they’re gone.”

Sage advice! Coach Wooden continues, “I have found the Golden Rule to be a good pace to start when I seek answers on how to treat members of a team.

Unfortunately, too often we see leaders who do not abide by the Golden Rule, who have no basis for behavior and decision making other than what will make them more money.

“I’m not suggesting that treating people the way you wish to be treated means giving them special favors or what they don’t deserve. A player who isn’t

good enough to be a starter, an individual who doesn’t have the talent to make the team, won’t be a starter and won’t be on the team. That’s fair. And ultimately the Golden Rule is about fairness and decency — treating people right.

“Conversely, a leader who treats people right will find that the right kind of people are drawn to his or her organization. Why? Because character counts.”

Indeed it does! And something else that I believe is a truism, the concept of “Fraternalism” links arm in arm with the Golden Rule!

Coach Wooden died on June 5, 2010.

He was 99 years old. His legacy lives on in the countless lives of those he served and through the life lessons he taught and walked. We — as SPJST leaders at every level — will have a fraternal legacy to be proud of if we follow coach Wooden’s example by: 1. Caring for the people we lead; 2. Teaching and developing their character and competence; and 3. Maintaining the attitude that a life not lived for others is a life not lived.

From the Supreme Lodge Special Called Meeting of the SPJST Supreme Lodge held on September 11, 2019, at SPJST Home Office, Temple, Texas PRESIDING The meeting was called to order at 3:40 p.m.

ATTENDING Supreme Lodge—Brian Vanicek, President; Hiram Dixon, Vice President; Leonard Mikeska, Chief Financial Officer; Roy Vajdak, Controller; Donnie Victorick – District One/Chairman; Jesse Pospisil – District Two; John Engelke – District Three; Bobby Davis – District Four; Bradley Stavinoha – District Five; Karen Kaspar – District Six/Vice Chairman; Robert J. Bayer – District Seven. Other—Melanie Zavodny, Editor/Director of Communication; Janie Coakley, Recording Secretary.

OPENING OF MEETING The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and a moment of silence was observed in respect to our departed members and in honor of our government officials, military troops, law enforcement, firemen, and EMS workers. President Vanicek led the Supreme Lodge in an opening prayer and paid tribute to the many lives that were lost on September 11, 2001.

PURPOSE OF THE MEETING To ratify the results of the ballot in lieu of the special convention, listed below.

PROPOSAL NO. 1 To amend Article XV, Section 97. Resolved to add the following paragraph to the end of Section 97: “If the SPJST’s reserves for any class of the SPJST’s benefit certificates becomes impaired, the Supreme Lodge Board of Directors may require the certificate holders to pay the SPJST an equitable proportion of the deficiency as determined by the Supreme Lodge Board of Directors. The aggregate amount for the impaired reserves may not exceed the total amount required to comply with section 885.408 of the Texas Insurance Code.”

Reason: This is newly approved language passed by the Texas Legislature that is required to be included in the By-Laws of every Fraternal Benefit Society doing business in Texas. We need to add this to By-Laws to be in compliance.

PROPOSAL NO. 2 To amend Article VII, Section 24. Resolved to amend Section 24 as follows to allow odd votes to be divided proportionally among the lodge’s delegates: “Votes. A lodge represented by its delegate or delegates is entitled to one vote for every adult member. Delegates from each lodge shall divide their lodge’s votes

In the event the votes do not divide equally among its delegates, the extra votes shall be assigned proportionally to all of the lodge’s delegates. (Example, a lodge with 4 delegates and 405 votes would result in each delegate having 101.25 votes) .”

Reason: The current method of assigning odd votes to the “ . . . delegate receiving the highest number of votes . . .” makes it impossible to develop any method of electronic voting and tabulation. Amending the By-Law to allow proportional assignment of odd votes will allow development of time-saving vote tabulation and greatly reduce possibility of errors during the counting process.

PROPOSAL NO. 3 To amend Article VII, Section 26 (c). Resolved to Amend this article requiring that a member must attend the majority of meetings during the three years preceding the Convention to be elected a delegate. Amend the article as follows: Amend the first sentence in Section 26 (c ) which currently reads: “Attended a majority of the regular meetings of the lodge during the three years preceding the Convention.” to read: “Attended a majority of the regular meetings of the lodge during one year preceding the Convention. Lodges meeting quarterly, majority would be two meetings.”

Reason: Current By-Law meeting attendance requirement of three years is too restrictive to new members or old members becoming active who may be well qualified otherwise. Some lodges are not able to elect a full slate of delegates because of not having enough members meeting the three-year attendance requirement.

PROPOSAL NO. 4 To amend Article XI, Section 60. Official Publication Vestnik. Resolved to amend the last sentence of Section 60 to read as follows: “The Vestnik will be published twice monthly and in color.”

Reason: The amendment, if approved, allows for publication of the Vestnik twice monthly instead of weekly.

The primary reason for the change is to increase efficiency. SPJST will expand its communication by integrating new media tools and strategies to increase brand relevance. After consulting with the Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication and the Publication Committee, the Supreme Lodge concluded that a twice monthly printed newspaper will be sufficient to continue to provide good communication with our members.

PROPOSAL NO. 5 To amend Article VIII Sections 29, 31 and 41 and Article IX Section 49 and 50. Resolved to amend Sections 29, 31, 41, 49 and 50 by changing the name of Director of Accounting/Information Technology Services in all places that it appears to “Controller”.

Reason: The only effective change here is changing the name of the position in Sections 29, 31, 41, 49 and 50 from “Director of Accounting/Information Technology Services [Financial Secretary] to Controller. The name “Controller” better describes the position in more professional terms. The current position name is too long and cumbersome.

PROPOSAL NO. 6 IX, SUPREME LODGE OFFICERS, Section 43 (a.) to read as follows: Resolved to amend Article “(a.) To be a member of SPJST for at least one year preceding the election or appointment.”

Resolved to amend Article X, SUPREME LODGE DIRECTORS, Section 51 (b.) to read as follows: “(b.) Be an active member for at least one year prior to the time of election.”

Reason: The effective change is reducing a three-year membership requirement to one year. In the case of Supreme lodge Officers, the positions have become highly specialized requiring technical skills and the three-year membership requirement narrows the field of applicants too much.

In the case of Directors, it appears that future regulations will impose the need for qualifications in Directors in experience and skill areas specified by regulators. We must be careful not to limit the field of qualified candidates by a long membership requirement. *An interpretation of Proposal No. 3 was asked. It was clarified that the qualification for elected delegates is to attend the majority of their lodge meetings for the year 2019. For monthly scheduled meetings, the majority would be to attend seven meetings; for bimonthly meetings, the majority would be to attend three meetings; and for quarterly meetings, the majority would be two meetings.

Chief Financial Officer Mikeska reported that all of the proposals were approved by more than a two-thirds majority. The votes were tabulated by the accounting firm of Henry L.S. Jezek, CPA to ensure confidentiality.

Director Pospisil moved to accept the results as presented with the amendments being effective on September 11, 2019. Director Kaspar seconded the motion, and the motion carried unanimously.

ADJOURNMENT There being no further business, Director Kaspar moved adjournment, Vice President Dixon seconded, and the motion to adjourn carried unanimously.

The meeting adjourned at 3:50 p.m.

District Three to enjoy Heritage Day this Sunday, Oct. 20 at Sokol Dallas

Dear District One Members, The District One Trunk-or-Treat is this Sunday, October 20, 2019, at Lodge 186, Caldwell at 3 p.m. Youth and adults are encouraged to dress in Halloween costumes. We are looking for volunteers to host the trunk games and candy stops. Volunteers will decorate their vehicle’s trunk and fill it with candy and treats - or play a game, and youth will then walk by to receive the candy/treats. Volunteers are also encouraged to dress in costume.

Dear District Three Members, We invite everyone to come out and celebrate Heritage Day on Sunday, October 20, 2019, at Sokol Hall, 7448 Greenville Avenue in Dallas, Texas 75231 from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.

The event is presented by the American Czech Slovak Culture Society and its member societies—SPJST, Sokol, WFLA, KJT, KJZT, RVOS, and Vaclav Havel Czech School of Dallas and includes folklore performances from the Czech Republic.

Opening ceremonies is at 11 a.m. and includes a performance by Dallas Czech Orchestra. The program from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. includes Mužátske Sbory Charvačané a Valtičan, a folklore band from the Czech Republic; beseda dancers; folk singers and dancers; a performance featuring the children from the Czech School of Dallas; and a Sokol gymnastics exhibition. There will be children’s activities throughout the day.

A live band will play from 3 to 6 p.m. for your listening and dancing pleasure.

Admission is $5 per person (ages 16 and under are free of charge), but if you wear your kroj, you get in for free!

Lots of food and refreshments will be available for purchase, including a traditional Czech meal of pork, sausage, dumplings, sauerkraut, green beans, and salad

District Five Fall Family Fun Day this Saturday, Oct. 19 at Lodge 88, Houston District Five Members, What better way to kick-off Fall 2019? A family fun day at Czech Fest at SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, located at 1435 Beall Street in Houston, Texas 77008. The district had such a great time last year combining the events that the district officers agreed to do it again this year. The event is from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. with The Telstars performing from 8 to 11:30 p.m. Czech Fest is open to the public, but SPJST District Five members will have discounted admission: District Five Youth - free of charge District Five Adults (ages 18 to 64) - $5 District Five Adults (age 65 and over) - free of charge

Lodge 4, Hallettsville members enjoy successful family day Dear Members, SPJST Lodge 4, Hallettsville held its annual family day on Sunday, August 18, 2019, at St. Mary’s Parish Hall beginning at 11 a.m. with registration and social hour.

At noon, President Joe Siptak welcomed everyone, and Dr. Mark Labaj gave the meal blessing. Members and guests then enjoyed a catered meal of barbecue chicken and sausage with the trimmings by Kolacny’s Barbeque and desserts brought by the members.

Following the meal, Vice President/FAC Annie Vahalik introduced guests Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek and District Six Director/Supreme Lodge Vice Chairman Karen Kaspar. Also present was 2005 SPJST State King Joshua Siptak and his family.

Recognized as the oldest member present was Vicky Zak - 89 years young, and Braxton Hearn, age 7 - the youngest member. Each received a cookie on a stick.

Door prize winners were announced

by FAC Annie assisted by President Vanicek and Philip Vahalik. Lodge 35, Elk discusses hall improvements On Wednesday September 11, 2019, President Randy Pavelka called our meeting to order at 7:20 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by officers, members, and guests. We had 11 members and one guest present.

Secretary Carla Price read the minutes of the August meeting, and they

VĚSTNÍK were approved as read. Treasurer Barbara Pavelka gave her August reports and with corrections, they were approved.

The Texas Dance Hall Preservation Grants were discussed again, and it was decided not to do the paperwork.

There was discussion to purchase a new microwave for the kitchen as the one we have is very old. A motion was made by Bobby Kubitza to purchase a new microwave, and the motion was seconded by Gene Pavelka. The motion passed.

Under new business, we are in need of some new kitchen and men’s restroom flooring.

We had a fish fry on October 4.

Lodge 47, Seaton hosts successful Outdoor Extravaganza Dear Vestnik Readers, Members of Lodge 47, Seaton met on Sunday, October 6, 2019, for their monthly meeting. The flags were pre-

sented by youth members Tristen Martinez and Everhett Bartek along with reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Members stood for a moment of silence in memory of Martha Palla and Wilbur Hejl. May God bless their families.

The roll call of officers and board members showed Fraternal Activities Coordinator EJ Pechal and Board Chairman Edwin Vasicek absent. Seventeen members and one youth were present.

VĚSTNÍK don Bartek for chairing the Extravaganza. It was a great evening with lots of friends and families, winners, and good food. We appreciate all workers and everyone who purchased tickets, sponsorships, and purchased and donated auction items. And, we especially appreciate those who came out to enjoy the evening.

The September minutes were approved as read by Secretary Patsy Koslovsky. The unofficial September board minutes were also read.

Vice President Brandon Bartek again thanked those who helped to make this year’s Extravaganza a success.

Secretary Patsy Koslovsky also thanked those who attended and helped with these events. She reminded everyone of the next meeting on Sunday, November 3, which will be the election of the 2020 officers and convention delegates. She read over the new requirements for delegates.

Treasurer Becky Zavodny gave the lodge’s financial report and the outcome of the Extravaganza. Bar Manager Danny Stepan gave his report. As entertainment/hall manager, he reported on upcoming events: Thursday, October 24 - Mužátske Sbory Charvačané a Valtičan, a 16-piece folk ensemble which comes from the Moravian region of the Czech Republic will present a program of traditional Czech folk music, song, and dance at 7 p.m.; and a wedding on Saturday, October 26.

Youth Leader Amber Bartek stated 26 youth attended the meeting today.

The youth club’s charity project for this month is supporting the animal shelter.

Youth members enjoyed special guest Jinger Pajestka and Frances of Wells Fargo who invited youth to join in making dog toys from tee shirts. The youth were so excited and loved making a toy for the dogs to play with and chew on.

Thank you, ladies, for your time.

Youth along with mother lodge members are asked to bring pet food, towels (old or new), and of course, old tee shirts to make more dog toys.

Please bring your items to the next meeting.

Seaton Youth Club will have a Membership Drive on Sunday, October 13 at Sammon’s Community Center in Temple. A brief meeting will be held at 1 p.m. for all prospective members and parents. Swimming in the indoor pool will be from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Snacks will be furnished. DYC Patsy Koslovsky will furnish door prizes.

Wednesday, October 16, 2019 Thanksgiving Dinner at the Lodge A reminder to all friends and family: Thanksgiving Dinner at the lodge hall on Thursday, November 28. The meal will be served from 11 to 2 p.m. All plates will be served indoor; however, carry out will be available from indoor.

The meal will consist of turkey, ham, dressing, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, rolls, homemade desserts, and tea. The price will be $15 for adults, and $8 for children age 12 and under. There will be plenty of room available for your entire family to come out and eat without the worry of cooking and cleaning.

We hope you will make plans to join us!

Memorial Service and Christmas Party—December 8 The lodge’s memorial service which is held each year in remembrance of deceased lodge members will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 8 followed by the lodge’s Christmas party. So many missed the event, and it was unanimously voted on to continue with the tradition of the Christmas party. Watch the Vestnik for more details.

An audit of all lodge financial books will be held on Wednesday, October 8 at 7 p.m.

Celebrating October birthdays are Danny Stepan, Gary Skrabanek, Albert Koslovsky, Sidney Bilbrey, Joe Baker, Jeffrey Kirby, and Cash Smith. We wish each of you a happy birthday with many years of good health, fun, and happiness.

Lodge 54, West plans Dec. 1 Christmas party The meeting of SPJST Lodge 54, West was held at St. Joseph Hall on Friday, September 13, 2019. The meeting was called to order at 7 p.m. by President Freddie Kaluza. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mr. Kaluza followed by a moment of silence in memory of all past departed members from our lodge who have passed away. We also wanted to remember all who died on 9-11 and to keep all police officers and emergency responders safe in the line of duty.

All of our officers and sales agents were present, and we had 21 members and guests in attendance for the meeting.

Wilburn Willis announced he no longer would be a sales agent, and our lodge thanked him for all he did to bring in new members.

The minutes of the last meeting were read by Janice Kaluza. JoAnn Matus made a motion to accept the minutes, and Linda Kaluza seconded the motion.

Motion passed. FAC Linda Kaluza gave a report to let everyone know that scholarship applications are now available from September 2019 through January 2020, and the deadline for SPJST Scholarship applications is February 1. The guidelines to apply for this scholarship is for high school graduates and undergraduates, and you have to be an SPJST member to receive a scholarship. Linda let everyone know of upcoming events including the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive, SPJST Car Show in Seaton on October 5, and observing Czech Heritage Day on October 20 at Sokol Dallas from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. with lots of food and entertainment. Ronnie Kaluza made a motion to accept the FAC report, and Herman Matus seconded the motion.

by Mary Lou Mynar. Terry Sefcik made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report, and Marcela Vaculik seconded the motion. Motion passed. Czech Reporter Jan Vaculik did not have anything to report but said he was waiting for it to get cooler, and he survived Westfest. Vice President Wilburn Willis wanted our members and guests to remember National Night Out with the City of West Police in October at the Westfest grounds. He also noted because of medical issues, Reverend Curtis Holland, pastor of West Brethren Church, would

be retiring after 17 years of ministry to them. We thought it would be nice to drop him a note and wish him well.

In old business, there were no reports.

In new business, we welcomed new members and new applications to Lodge 54 - Oliver Logan Kaluza sold by sales agent Janice Kaluza. Jacob Kaluza made a motion to accept Oliver as a new member, and Ronnie Kaluza seconded the motion with all members in favor.

Christmas Party—December 1 Our upcoming Christmas party will be on Sunday, December 1 at Tours Hall starting at 3 p.m. The Home Office will be printing our invitations and sending them out for us. The Junior Historians will dance at 3:30 p.m. followed by a fried chicken dinner catered by Eddie Ray’s for all the guests starting at 4:30 p.m. Santa, Mrs. Claus, and the elf are expected to arrive at 5:30 p.m. to visit with all the children, hand out goody bags, and take pictures. Before all guests leave, there will be several cash prize drawings with $800 total given out for adults and $200 total for the children.

Marvin Cepak will play the accordion for our afternoon entertainment and Christmas music during Santa’s visit. We will donate $75 to Santa and Mrs. Claus for helping us out and $100 to the Junior

The audit committee was reminded about auditing the books before the next meeting. We will be selecting our delegates at the next meeting.

Terry Sefcik made a motion to adjourn the meeting, seconded by JoAnn Matus. Motion passed. Door prizes were given away by the lodge to JoAnn Matus and Jody Hromadka, each receiving $15.

A cake was brought for our birthdays since the last meeting. Marcela Vaculik, Janice Kaluza, Amanda Kaluza, and Jacob Kaluza were our birthday honorees. Janice Kaluza led a prayer in English, and Marcela Vaculik led a beautiful prayer in Czech. All then enjoyed food and fellowship.

Next Meeting—November 1 The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 1 at St. Joseph Hall where we will have an election of new officers for 2020. We hope to see more of our members in attendance.

Both were approved.

Under communications, Secretary Virginia Rebecek read a letter from Vice President Hiram Dixon that Diana Rodriguez is a new sales agent. A letter from Controller Roy W. Vajdak was received about the number of delegates Lodge 79 is entitled to have at the 2020 convention.

FAC report was given by Vice President/FAC Jerry Sijansky. He stated several members attended the District Seven Fall Fun Day in New Braunfels.

He asked all to turn in fraternal acts by the end of December.

Under new business, member Beverly Davenport made a motion that the monthly donation go to Cystic Fibrosis, seconded by Vice President/FAC Jerry Sijansky. Motion was approved.

In attendance at the meeting were sales agents Lanny and Mary Mongold and Armando Diaz.

Youth club report was given by Youth Leader Marcia Rew. Present were four members and guests. The youth colored the Vestnik project and discussed up-

coming events and people in nursing homes.

Birthday for September was Larry Elzner on the 2nd. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Larry.

Twenty-five dollar door prizes were won by Irene Mitchell and Mary Mongold.

Judy Majek made a motion to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Jerry Sijansky.

Next Meeting—October 20 The next meeting will be Sunday, October 20, celebrating Czech Heritage Month. Marcis Rew volunteered to make the pork roast once again.

Lodge 142, Houston announces remaining 2019 meeting dates The monthly meeting of Lodge 142, Houston was held on Sunday, September 15, 2019, in the kitchen/dining area of Lodge 88, Houston. At 1 p.m., a social and lunch of lasagna, salad, and bread sticks was served.

President Keith Kieschnick called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. Roll call of officers showed Vice President Dennis Hermis, Secretary Elizabeth Hermis, Flag Bearer Ryder Butera, and Sales Agents Connie Carter, Stacey Keller, and Carlos Iparraguirre absent. We had 26 members in attendance.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Pat Schleider reminded everyone of Czech Fest at Lodge 88 on Saturday, October 19.

Names of new members were announced as Natalie, Zackery, Jayden and Jonathan Lerner.

Old business was discussed. Astros game is Sunday, September 22. Tickets were handed out to all that were present.

Oldest male member present was Zackery Lerner; oldest female was Pat Schleider; and youngest youth was Jonathan Lerner.

The meeting adjourned at 2:30 p.m. with door prizes awarded.

Immediately following the pledge, a moment of silent prayer was observed for all in need.

The meeting held in September was the beginning of a long planning session for our annual Christmas party, with a follow-up session at the October 1 meeting.

The finalization on the money distributions were made at the October meeting. We are privileged that we are able to make these distributions.

Lodge 180, Burleson celebrates birthdays

President Cathy Simmank called the meeting to order by asking the members and guests to stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance with her. Janet Basham read a poem entitled “One” and announced that a lady at her church was asking those who were interested to write letters to school children in El Paso encouraging them to return to school.

Janet handed out information on where to send those letters for distribution.

Jessica Munoz was our guest for the day and baby Scarlett. What a joy to have them with us. That baby was so tiny that Grandmother Jeanette Tesar held her in the palm of her hand. She was just precious. I’d like to say business proceeded as usual with the reading of the minutes, but the group decided to skip the reading and move on to the treasurer’s report. Margaret Lamance gave a brief summary of our finances.

Sunshine Chair Marlene Bass sent cards to Theresa Clay who had been hospitalized four times since our last meeting and to Joy Booe who is recovering from heart surgery. We send our prayers to not only Theresa and Joy, but to any of our members who are experiencing health problems.

We have decided to just outline what took place at our meeting each month.

So here are details and announcements in brief form:

- Betty Loyd delivered donated school supplies to Castleberry Elementary, and the students were delighted to receive them. She also visited Lake Worth Elementary, and they did not need assistance with school supplies.

They did suggest that they needed money for other items instead. So we will take that into consideration.

Our October theme will be Halloween so come as a pumpkin, witch, or something spooky.

It was announced that we would hold a silent auction at the October meeting with proceeds going to the Circle’s “kitty.” Members are encouraged to bring something to put into the auction.

In November, members may bring items for a craft fair. Each person will get to keep their profits from their sales.

I am sure Binnie Thieme has been busy . . . busy making her very cute oven door towel dresses. They make great gifts for Christmas.

It was agreed to hold a Christmastime food drive. More details to come on that project.

Marlene Bass, Marilyn DiOrio, and Betty Loyd were hostesses along with their wonderful helpers Garland, Bessie, and Lisa Ellsworth. If I’ve left anyone out, please forgive me. I get a little lax in my notes sometimes. We had a picnic theme for lunch, and there were so many great dishes available. President Cathy came through, as she promised she

would, with homemade ice cream.

There were even little bitty fake ants on the tables. And, oh the ice cream was soo-o good.

John Durham gave a run down on the upcoming Czech Heritage Day activities scheduled for the lodge. Details for the cake walk were reviewed, and it was agreed that it would be a fun afternoon.

We know when we dropped off our cakes, the aroma in the hall was so hard to resist.

“Happy Birthday” was sung to Lucy Martinez and Betty Loyd. We missed you, Mary Ann Krivanek, and hope you had a wonderful birthday.

After door prizes were given away, we played corn hole. I must say most of us had really bad aim but a couple of “show-offs” hit the hole and won a prize! Janet then led the blessing for lunch, and bingo closed the activities for the day. Take care, and hopefully, we’ll see some cooler weather soon.

Czech Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of American Czechs and the many contributions they have made to American culture. Czech Wedding Grand March After wedding vows are exchanged, many Czech weddings in Texas serve up barbecue and pivo, and kick off a polka dance with the grand march. ‘Dancing’ to the tune of Farewell to Prague or Under the Double Eagle, everyone in the grand march simply follows the lead couple/s and mirrors what they do, hand-in-hand through all the twists and turns. And there is really is a meaning to everyone getting up to join the new couple in celebrating their new journey ahead: ● The dance begins with the newlyweds, wedding party - and all who want to join in the fun following the lead couple/s in a circle ● The couples separate, which signifies a quarrel. ● The couples join back together, signifying they made up. ● Then couples join together in rows of four or more to signify the growing family. ● The dance returns to single file, forming a snake that signifies the twists and turns of life. ● Couples then join together to form a bridge to which each person goes under to signify the strength of the newlyweds’ bond. ● Last, the newlyweds dance to their wedding song while the wedding party and guests form a circle around them, signifying the support of the family in marriage.

District One hosts trunk-or-treat this Sunday, Oct. 20 at Lodge 186, Caldwell Dear District One Members, The District One Trunk-or-Treat is this Sunday, October 20, 2019, at Lodge 186, Caldwell at 3 p.m. Youth and adults are encouraged to dress in Halloween costumes. We are looking for volunteers to host the trunk games and candy stops. Volunteers will decorate their vehicle’s trunk and fill it with candy and treats - or play a game, and youth will then walk by to receive the candy/treats. Volunteers are also encouraged to dress in costume.

State King’s Notebook

by Luc Marcaurele 2019-2020 SPJST State King Lodge 30, Taiton August seems so long ago. Being crowned State King with the opportunity to represent SPJST throughout the state of Texas was a lifelong goal accomplished! I started my senior year of high school a week after State Youth Achievement Day (YAD). Life has been busy between college courses, being drumline leader for our band at the football games, and raising a goat for the county fair!

My first trip to represent SPJST was Labor Day weekend at Westfest.

One word - hot. Two words - very hot. My nephew Hudson Riha was so excited to ride in the awesome Corvette with District Three Director John Engelke and his wife Diana. State Queen Misty Dvorak and I had fun throwing candy from the Corvette to the crowds during the parade.

The luncheon after the parade gave us time to relax for a while with all our SPJST friends and family before heading out to the Westfest grounds. Frank Horak did a great job in getting SPJST recognized during the parade of costumes where we presented a check to the Westfest committee. I appreciate all that he, Brian Vanicek, Melanie Zavodny, and David Nauert do and their dedication in promoting this amazing organization.

Just a few football games later, several tests and projects, and we were off to the SPJST Car Show in Seaton at Star Hall. Wow! That was a blast! (It was hot, but at least we had shade and AC) . . . plus my favorite non-District Six DYC Patsy Koslovsky was there. She is so much fun to talk with. I was also able to visit with my fellow Camp Kubena cabin chaperone Doug Galler! I love the fraternalism of SPJST! There were so many awesome cars to see and the cars’ owners were all so nice and eager to show off their pride and joy.

Meeting Miss Texas was a once-ina-lifetime experience for me. We both share our love of band, and she played the flute for the crowd!

Once again, Frank, Brian, Melanie, David, Lynette, and a lot of the Home Office personnel were there working hard to raise money for the SPJST Foundation. I am honored to be part of this great group of people and look forward to seeing them all again at the December Christmas parade in Temple.

Keep me in your prayers as I tackle school work, band competition, and FFA events. I will continue to pray for the growth of SPJST for our future generations.

Dear Vestnik Readers, I am excited for Halloween. MawMaw and PawPaw are going to come up this weekend for the pumpkin patch. We are also going to look at the Halloween store and eat at Roadhouse. I am going to order steak there. I am learning a lot in school. My favorite thing in school is stations. I had fun at the car show. I like the cars, especially the old ones. I got to dance beseda there. After the car show, I got to go to a birthday party at the splash pad. I had fun.

In Memoriam In Memory of Martha Palla

In Memory of Alice Jochen

Martha Palla, age 95, of Temple , Texas, passed away on Thursday, October 2, 2019. She was born on October 21, 1923, in the Airville community, Bell County, Texas, to George and Frances Adamek Pavlica. She attended Lost Prairie School. At age 18, she went to work Martha Palla for café Delite.

She met future husband Eugene Palla at a mattress making event at Sefcik Hall. Eugene worked at Empire Seed and would come eat breakfast at the café. They married shortly after in 1943. They moved to Fort Worth where both worked at Consolidated Aircraft, he was a riveter and she was a driller, where she almost was electrocuted when her drill shorted out.

In 1945, he was laid off and she was pregnant with Barbara. They moved back to Temple where she was a homemaker until all her children were school age. She worked at a local cleaners before retirement.

Martha was a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton.

Visitation was from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, October 4 at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple. Funeral service was held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 5 at Cross Church on Birdcreek in Temple. Burial followed at Seaton Cemetery. The family invites you to make donations to Temple Brethren Church, now Cross Church on Birdcreek.

Resolution Committee Ruth Hanusch Joyce Skrabanek —SPJST—

Alice O. Heinrich Jochen, age 86, passed away at her home on Wednesday, September 25, 2019, surrounded by her children.

She was born on December 1, 1932, in High Hill to Lee and Tillie (Kosler) Heinrich, and was the eldest of four daughters. Her parents were sharecroppers, thus they moved around the Weimar/Oakland area while she was growing up. She attended Weimar Alice Jochen High School and graduated as valedictorian of her class in 1950. Upon graduation, she married the love of her life, Nelson Jochen, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Weimar on November 4, 1950. They were married 68 years before Nelson passed away on January 31, 2018.

In the mid-1950s, they relocated to Houston and raised three children.

While in Houston, Alice began an extended career at Walgreen’s. She retired as district manager secretary for Walgreen’s 40 years later. She was very active in SPJST and served as secretary of Lodge 142, Houston for 34 years. Alice and Nelson loved going to all SPJST events and dances, and upon retirement, continued to travel to Houston monthly to visit their SPJST family of friends.

Moving back to Schulenburg in the 1990s, Alice continued to get involved in the St. Rose Altar Society, helping with ice cream socials and bingo at local nursing homes. She always wanted to be on the go, and loved being outside at their Schulenburg home, Freyburg farm, and all the church picnics. Above all, Alice always loved spending time with her friends and her family.

Visitation was held on Friday, September 27 at 5 p.m., with rosary following at Schwenke-Baumgarten Funeral Home at 7 p.m. Funeral service was held at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church on Saturday, September 28 at 10 a.m., followed by interment at the Schulenburg City Cemetery.

Survivors include son Harlan Jochen and wife Joette of Navasota; daughters Nellwyn Petter and husband Ronny of Schulenburg, and Karen Owens and husband Jim of Pasadena; grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Jason Petter and wife Carrie; Mandy McNiece and husband John and their children Scott and Cody; Jennifer Stolle and husband Matt and their children Maddie and Annie; Kristel Jochen and son Hayden; Garrett Owens, Gunnar Owens, Grace Owens; and Taloyre Keller and husband Darin and their children Dillon, Austyn, Lauren, and Nathan; brother-in-law Je-

rome Kolek of Plantersville; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband Nelson Jochen; parents Lee and Tillie Heinrich; sisters Loraine Ulbrich and husband Herbert, Georgie Krecmer and husband Frank, and Bernice Kolek.

Pallbearers were Jason Petter, Garrett Owens, Gunnar Owens, Pat Krecmer, Jerry Kolek, and Herb Ulbrich. Church scriptures were read by Mike Krecmer.

Arrangements were conducted by Schwenke-Baumgarten Funeral Home.

Lodge 142, Houston - 34 years of service as secretary

Today, we celebrate Alice Jochen and remember all the things she loved.

We rejoice in knowing she is now with the good Lord above.

She lived 86 years, she loved her garden, and the farm.

And a little schlock now and then never did any harm.

Her time spent on earth was a very blessed life.

She cherished her 68 years being Nelson’s wife.

They enjoyed so many things together, like festival music, and dancing.

But who knew a root beer float could be so romancing.

Her 40 years at Walgreen’s she was a dedicated worker.

But still nothing can compare to that Schulenburg Whataburger!

She volunteered her time to so many things.

The kind of selflessness God wants to earn her some wings.

She loved her time at the lodge, church picnics, dominoes, and more . . .

And a special love for Chrissy, the dog she adored.

Sticking with things for so long is dedication some would say.

Others may view it as the “Stubborn German Way”!

But today as we say goodbye, we should look past being sad.

Have faith in knowing she is with God now, and dancing with Dad. —SPJST—

By Sabrina N. Young, CFSP Young’s Daughter’s Funeral Home and Bereavement Center Founder SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Ever wonder if your children understand when someone dies? Do they understand what death is? Do you know when they’re old enough to attend a funeral?

As the mother of four daughters and a Certified Funeral Service Professional, funeral director, and embalmer, I want to share my experiences with children and grief.

Six years ago, my father Ronald J. Portugal died, and just recently, my brother Robert J. Portugal – died. While my daughters range in age from five to teens, they definitely understand loss and will show grief in their own ways. While a child’s responses to a death vary based on their developmental level and life experiences, all children grieve.

As a funeral director, I get many calls from parents who are concerned about their children’s responses to death. These parents usually ask for information about how their children are grieving and how they can help them heal.

Here is some basic information about children’s grief and how parents, teachers, and other adults in their lives can support a child as they grieve and cope with a significant loss.

Infants and Toddlers: Typically, a child younger than five years old may not understand that death is permanent. They may ask, “Is Grandma sleeping?” and may want to know if and when the person who died will return.

Some funeral homes may have a crying room or a children’s play area so children can be brought to the funeral home and yet not attend the funeral. The reason for these facilities is that funerals are times to bring the family closer since so many members do not live close by. As a parent, you will need to use your best judgement of what you would feel comfortable with regarding your child’s attendance at a funeral or during the dying process.

Infants and toddlers will often express their grief through moodiness, changes in eating or sleeping patterns, changes in toilet pattern, clinginess, and even experiencing nightmares.

My daughter Valora is five years old, and she showed signs of moodiness and clinginess during the dying process and my brother’s funeral. Even though she did not know her uncle Robert well, she grieved because her family and sisters were grieving.

She also became needier while she was grieving with us.

School-Age Children: As they grow, children begin to understand the permanence of death. Yet, even though my school-aged

daughter Zaydriana was mentally older and seemed to understand permanence of loss when her grandfather died, she acted much like Valora with clinging and moodiness.

School-aged children often express their grief, emotionally and verbally. They have a greater ability to verbally express feelings, and they may ask more detailed questions about the specific circumstances of the death in addition to worries about themselves or other loved ones dying.

Zaydriana had many questions about afterlife and the funeral procedures. During the service, even her older two sisters displayed physical symptoms in their coping. Children are likely to express their grief through physical symptoms so you may hear many complaints of stomachaches, headaches, dizziness, fatigue, and more.

After a death in the family, some children experience problems in school, and some school-age children need help re-entering school after a loss as well as support from the staff, teachers, administrators, and guidance staff in creating a safe and secure environment.

Their ability to concentrate in class may change, and they may change when it comes to completing assignments, turning in work on time, and caring about their grades. Communicate with teachers and other staff so they will understand the situation, your child’s changing needs, and other difficulties.

Adolescents: Recently, when I lost my brother, it was very sudden. In our family medical history, when stomach/pancreatic cancer is diagnosed, it tends to move quickly to death.

My daughters Kayla, 14; Kelsea, 12; and Zaydriana, 10, understand that death is final, inevitable, and universal. We all have a strong Christian background. However, coping with grief can be seen through difficulties with motivation and concentration as well as through isolation.

My daughters wanted to be part of the funeral and, at the same time, they distanced themselves from the family with a tendency to spend most of their time with friends. This is a teen’s comfort zone.

My grieving parent tip is simply this: Educate your children about the impermanence of everything - from a goldfish to a family pet cat or dog. Let them know it is okay to share feelings - whether those feelings are ones of sadness, even anger. Mainly, let them know that grief is part of the healing after a loss whether it is due to death, when a friend moves away, your family moves to another neighborhood, or losing a sports contest, an election, an audition or tryout, even making a lower grade than they expected.

Grief is normal. Feelings of grief can be shared and are acceptable; and most of all, grief is a normal reaction to loss.

TCHCC Czech Heritage Fest Oct. 18, 19 in La Grange The Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center (TCHCC) in La Grange will host the annual Heritage Festival and Muziky on Friday, October 18 and Saturday, October 19, 2019. The Fest will open on Friday in front of the Main Center and TCHCC’s famous homemade chicken and dumplings will be served while it lasts in the Hanslik Banquet Hall beginning at 5:30 pm.

The RVOS Insurance Octoberfest on the Deck will begin at 4 p.m. with music by the Dujka Brothers, sponsored by the Texas Polka News, from 6 to 9:30 p.m.

Mark and John Dujka have been making music together for more than 30 years and have several acknowledgements, including being inducted into the Polka Hall of Fame at the KC Hall in Hallettsville and receiving a Favorite Song Award from the International Polka Association for their recording of “Church Picnic Polka.” The song is featured on their latest CD, Let’s Have a Party, which celebrates the duo’s 30th anniversary.

On Saturday, the big day kicks off with an opening ceremony at 10 a.m.

The La Grange Ford Hospoda will be filled with cold pivo and musical entertainment by the Praha Brothers Band of Temple and the Round Top Brass Band from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Enjoy more music at the Muziky, Muziky event from 7 to 9:30 p.m. in the Sanford Schmid Amphitheater. Always a popular part of the Heritage Fest, this year will feature an exciting music, dance, and performance by Mužátske Sbory Charvatčané a Valtičané from the Czech Republic. The band is a folklore ensemble and will be a unique show for

Stroll the Village In addition to enjoying the great music, you’re invited to stroll the Czech Village, an early 1900s recreated village complete with residential houses, barns, and stores. Demonstrations of early life for the immigrants will take place throughout the grounds all day, including working in the saw mill, the operation of the Czech Newspaper Museum press and engine, blacksmithing, corn shelling and grinding, hay pressing, and the making of textiles, soap, noodles, sausage, honey, and wine. Children activities will be available along with many other activities for everyone to take part in. Plenty of food and cold beverages will be available as well.

An antique farm equipment show sponsored by the South Texas Wheel Spinners and Crank Twisters Club and an antique/classic car show by H&H Automotive will spread through the village. Vendors and craft booths will be available for your shopping pleasure.

Visit the country store for some good buys, including fresh, stone-ground corn meal for cooking. The Janak Barn and Texas Czech Agricultural Museum displays farm practices and implements from the late 1800s to 1940. Reminiscing of the Dožinky (Harvest) Fest in the Czech Republic, horse-drawn wagon rides will be available through the grounds during the day.

The Czech Village houses two music museums. The Czech Music Museum of Texas, located in the Kalich House, features four genres of Czech music – classical, folk, polka, and liturgical. The Polka Lover’s Club of Texas Museum, located in the Hoelscher House and Huebner Center, features a display of Texas polka bands, as well as mem-

orabilia and photos of the Polka Lover’s Club of America, Texas Chapter.

Inside the TCHCC Main Center, stop by the Czech Gift Shop to browse the brand-new stock of authentic Czech items, tee-shirts, caps, crystal, periodicals, music CDs, and new Christmas decorations for 2019. Watch textile demonstrations of spinning and looming, crochet, and knitting. Enjoy the current exhibits at the center: All Things Czech Exhibit in the Museum and the updated Military Exhibit in the Library.

Czech Moravian folk ensemble to perform in La Grange, Dallas, West, Seaton, Houston In conjunction with Czech Heritage Month, five Texas venues will be hosting Mužátske Sbory Charvačané a Valtičan, a 16-piece folk ensemble which comes from the Moravian region of the Czech Republic. Music has long been an important part of daily life for the people in the Czech lands, offering both a means of expression and a vent for their emotions. To this day, traditional celebrations, including weddings, the welcoming of spring and giving of thanks for a successful harvest are still celebrated in song and dance.

Zpráva ze schůze řádu Jaromír SPJST č. 54 ve Westu, Tx. Česky píšící dopisovatel Jan Vaculík Naše pravidelná čtvrtletní schůze se konala dne 13. září 2019 v síni svateho Josefa při osadě Nanebevstoupení Panny Marie ve Westu, Tx za příjemného počasí. Naše pravidlo platí, že máme mít první pátek v určitých měsících schůzi, avšak v září se plete do datumu Westfest a tak obyčejně máme schůzi hned na začátku měsíce anebo později. Vidíme, že se jedná o správné rozhodntí, protože většina našich členů pracuje v jednotlivých organisacích a schůze v pátek před Westfestem by nebyla dobře navštívena.

President řádu Freddie Kaluža zahájil schůzi, přivítal přtomné členy a členky a vyzval je ke složení přísahy vlajce a republice, pro kterou stojí. Uctili jsme chvilkou ticha památku zemřelých členů. Tajemnice Janice Kaluža přečetla zápis z minulé schůze a byl schválen tak, jak byl čten. Lin da Kaluža přednesla svoji zprávu o bratrských akcích u našeho řádu a poukázala na náš tiskový orgán Věstník, kde je možno najít množství akcí, kterých se mohou naši členové zúčastnit. Lidé v dnešní době rádi posedávají u televise v poslední době a to působí nepříznivě na jejich tělesné a duševní zdraví. Mary Lou Mynář přednesla svoji zprávu o našich

financích a peníze pěkně rostou v obou bankách.

Hlavním bodem pořadu bylo pořádání vánoční besídky dne 1. prosince 2019 v Tours, Tx. v osadní síni.

Projednali jsme obvyklé pořádání besídky, která začně o třetí hodině, přijdou se s námi pobavit mladí tanečníci ze střední školy, pak bude večeře a přijde svatý Mikuláš a paní Miikulášo vou a rozdají malé dárečky dětem i dospělým.Všichni musí počkat až do chvíle, kdy svatý Mikuláš začne rozdávat všem přítomným osobám obálku.

Posoudili jsme náklady spojené s besídkou a zjistili jsme, že budeme muset uvažovat o jiné síni, protože síně v našem okolí si pozvedly ceny až poněkud vysoko, protože naše síně byla zničena a není postavna nová síň, jak bylo slíbeno po výbuchu. Múžeme uvažovat o tom, že bychom postavili naši síň na svoje útraty.

Ve všeobecné diskusi se naši členové zabývali administrací naší jenoty. Je známo, že jednota měla několik chudší roků a nyní se ukazuje, že hodnota jednotlivých složek se vyrovnává a vedení jednoty se snaží zavádět různé novoty, které mají zabezpečit budoucnost jednoty. Je užitečné si nechat poradit a zeptat se rozumných lidí, kteří mají zkučenosti se životním pojištěním. Není možno také opomenout, že naše jednota kromě pojištění také prokazuje kulturní a společenské vyžití a že není možno opomíjet jednu část práce jednoty vůči druhé. Správný názor je v tom, že obě části činnosti jednoty, to je pojštění a kultura, se budou vzájemně podporovat..Ředitelé jednoty by měli zaujmout širší pole na jednotu a nehonit se jenom za výsledky účetního. Obě součásti činnosti naší jednoty musí být vyváženy ke prospěchu členů jednoty a jednoty samotné.

S tím souvisí také prospěšnější uspořádání vnitřních poměrů v jednotě.

Doufejme, že zaměstnanci a ředitelé jednoty pociťují dostatečnou odpovědnost za úspěšné podnikání a činnost jednoty.

Na závér schze jsme měli losování a štěstí přálo Jo Ann Matúš a Joe Hromádkovi. Příští schůze se bude konat 1. listopadu a bude to schůze s volbami.

Proto potřebujeme dostatek členů a členek, aby všichni přišli do schůze a zvolili odpovědné úředníky na příští rok.

Czech Summer Study Tour set for June-July 2020 The Czech Summer Study Tour 2020 is June 25 to July 17, 2020. The tour will depart the United States on June 24, 2020, to Prague, Czech Republic.

Housing: Group participants will be housed in dorms of an agricultural university with double occupancy rooms sharing a bath. Single rooms are available at an extra charge. The dorm is situated in the northwestern part of Prague, linked to the center of town by bus and subway.

Food Service: Three meals a day will be served featuring authentic Czech cuisine.

Czech Language Instruction: Class size will depend on enrollment. Your level: Beginning or intermediate will be evaluated informally for placement into the proper class. The class will meet five days a week for four hours before lunch and once a week for two hours of conversation after lunch. The classes are non-credit courses. Excursions and cultural events are included.

Instructors: Professors will be from Charles University and a linguistic institute in Prague.

Introduction: A desire to establish the first independent country of Czechs and Slovaks was accompanied by diplomatic endeavors and by battles of thousands of Czech and Slovak volunteers on the battlefields of the First World War. Immediately after the war started, Czech and Slovak natives living in the territory of Russia and France started, entirely spontaneously, to unify and to create military units of volunteers, with the aim to participate in the war against Austria-Hungary and Germany, armed with guns. At the same time, political struggle to initiate an independent state was organized under the leadership of Tomas G. Masaryk. Thanks to his work, volunteer units from war captives of Czech and Slovak nationality were organized. Their struggle was a mirror image of the massive national struggle to liberate their nation and to establish an independent Czechoslovakia.

Among members of those volunteer foreign military units which were organized in the territory of Russia, France, and Italy, there were perhaps more than 1,600 courageous patriots who were natives of present-day Vsetin County.

Some of them had fallen in the battle, many were injured, all of them suffered hardship of wartime, and most of all fought in remote countries with the one and only assurance that, if they would be captured by Austro-Hungarian and German armies, they would have the only destiny—execution. Their legion participation contributed to the establishment of a Czechoslovakian patriotic idea. They were enthusiastic supporters of it, they spread this idea around, and they defended it not only at the time of peace, but also during Nazi occupation

when many of them sacrificed their lives in the struggle to rebuild Czechoslovak independence. This book is dedicated to the memory of all these courageous people who fought for a free and democratic Czechoslovakia.

The Legend of the Christmas Spider #C19-22 - $19 The Legend of the Spider is perhaps one of the most favorite and best known legends. Many years ago, a very poor Czech mother was very sad because the next morning was Christmas, and she would have no gifts for her children. She cried and prayed all night and when the early morning sun, shining through the bedroom window, woke the children, they ran excitedly down the stairs to see their surprise. The mother tried to stop them, but she was unsuccessful. As she tried to think of something to tell the children, she began to understand, from their laughter and excitement, that the children saw something wonderful that she was not seeing through her tears and heartache. As she descended the stairs, she saw the children looking outside and, as she looked at them, a sparkle caught her eyes too. A spider had made a spider web in the tree just outside the window.

As the sun shone on the web, it glistened brightly, and the children believed they had received a special Christmas treat. The Lord had answered the mother’s prayers by giving her children something she could not.

The story of the Christmas spider has taught us that it is important to be hard working and that anything done with good intentions doesn’t go unnoticed and is thoroughly rewarded. Commemorating this legend even to this day, people often decorate their trees with tinsel and put an artificial spider ornament on the tree.

With the 2019 Christmas season quickly approaching, Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) wishes to introduce its 2019 collection of ornaments. This will be the seventh year that we have offered ornaments associated with a legend, a tradition, or a symbol. In addition, this year we are excited to offer a very beautiful and unique line of ornaments that were made exclusively in the Czech Republic.

Here is our first week’s offering: The Legend of the Apple #C19-25 - $11 The apple played an important role in the traditional European Christmas Eve celebrations. After dinner, the father (or

VĚSTNÍK Legend of the Poinsettia # C19-26 - $15 One of the most delightful decorations at Christmas is the poinsettia.

The flower was brought to the United States from Mexico by Joel R.Poinsett, who served as the USA’s first ambassador to Mexico, from 1825 to 1829. The plant was named for him, and the legend of the poinsettia comes from Mexico. It tells of a girl named Maria and her little brother, Pablo. They were very poor, but they always looked forward to the Christmas festival. At Christmas time, a large manger scene was set up in the village church, and the days before Christmas were filled with parades and parties. The children loved Christmas, but they were always rather sad because they had no money to buy presents. They longed to have something that they could give to the church for Baby Jesus, but they could think of nothing. One Christmas, Eve, Maria, and Pablo set out for the church to attend the service. Along the way, an angel told them to pick some weeds growing along the roadside to take as their gift to the Baby Jesus.

The other children teased them when they arrived with their gift, but they knew they had given what they could.

Maria and Pablo began placing the green plants around the manger and miraculously, the green top leaves turned into bright red petals, and soon the manger was surrounded by beautiful star-like flowers just like the poinsettias we see today.

Star of Bethlehem # C19-27 - $12 The Star is a symbol of the guiding light that led the wise men to Bethlehem, where the Christ-Child lay in a manger. It is a heavenly sign of the fulfillment of God’s promise to send a Savior into the world. Throughout much of the world today, the Christian holiday begins with the appearance of the first star on Christmas Eve. This star, shimmering in transparent glass accented with gold and silver glitter, will be an important family heirloom for years to come.

Wednesday, October 16, 2019 The Czech Greeting and Traditions Ornament # TSL-30 - $10 Vesele Vanoce, “Merry Christmas”, is a greeting all Czechs can say. This ornament has sold out every year and continues to be very desirable. The reverse side of the ornament shows Czech Christmas Customs. It reads: “On the evening of December 5, St. Nicholas legendarily descends from a gold cord with an angel and mentor to reward or admonish children. At Christmas Eve supper, a chair is left vacant for the Christ-child.

After supper, candles on the tree are lighted.

Tree décor includes straw and paper stars, Bohemian glass ornaments, fruits, nuts, cookies, and intricately painted eggshells – symbolizing birth.

After midnight mass, children often sleep on straw by the manger, reminiscent of Christ’s birth. On January 6, Epiphany, priests write C+M+B over the doors of homes, placing a cross between letters which stand for the initials of the Magi and a Latin phrase meaning “May Christ Bless This Home.”

Czech Wedding Traditions in the Czech Republic Classic Wedding Traditions Though most of the traditions found at Czech weddings are typically Christian traditions and can be found at different weddings all around the world, we found a few in particular that stood out and are singular to Czechs. These traditions may vary depending on the region you’re in and might not even be used in today’s time, but have been passed down from generations and will always remain part of Czech heritage.

Invitation Cookies According to the tradition, they are made several weeks before the wedding.

They are distributed to familiars, friends, and neighbors and also serve as an invitation for the wedding. Cookies should

have at least three types of filling, and they represent the housewife culinary art.

As the tradition is not only very nice, but also very tasty, there is no danger that it will be forgotten.

Groom’s Test - An Axe and A Bottle At the doorstep of the bride’s home, an axe and bottle of wine would be presented to the groom. If he chooses the axe, it is a good sign, and it means he will be a good husband and worker. But if he selects the bottle, it means he will be lazy and a drunkard.

Bride’s Test With the first step into the groom’s house, the bride has to quickly clean the house. This expresses that she wants to be a good housewife.

Scoop Dancing Finally, all the guests arm themselves with pots and pot lids and march singing and make a lot of noise through the house or the flat of the couple - to drive away all the bad ghosts.

Bridesmaids They accompany the bride to the church. The ghosts that want to harm the bride confuse her with other bridesmaids.

To be successful in confusing the ghosts, bridesmaids have to have very similar dress as the bride.

Rain Down with Roses Nephews or daughters of the couple’s friends go in front of the wedding parade to the church and rain down roses. This is also pagan tradition. The flowers are to attract the earth mother.

Rosemary Bridal Wreath The bridesmaids will make a rosemary wreath and give it to the bride the night before the wedding to wear on her wedding day. This wreath symbolizes a hope for wisdom, love, and loyalty in the couple’s future and is a lovely accessory the bride can either hold or wear in her hair. Some people give out sprigs of rosemary to the guests of the wedding as well for fertility and luck.

In addition to the wreath, in the Czech Republic, the tradition of wearing something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue is strictly followed; however, the “borrowed” item must belong to a friend who is already married, and the “something old” must be a family heirloom.

Plate Breaking This is a common tradition found at many wedding receptions around the world. To start off the reception, someone in the wedding party would break a plate at the feet of the bride and groom.

Together, the newlyweds would then sweep the broken pieces to signify they will work together in their future life together, and that the wife will take care of her husband and keep their home tidy.

Chlebíčky Eating chlebíčky is something we know all too well! These open-faced sandwiches are common hors d’oeuvres not only in Czech households, but also at weddings. The variety of toppings and spreads is so wide that they make for the perfect party food. Typically, the bride’s family will prepare large batches of potato salad, or such for the chlebíčky.

Flower Bouquet Toss The bride throws the flower bouquet over her left shoulder once she leaves the church or town hall into a crowd of single women. The lucky lady who catches the bouquet is the next one to get married.

Wedding Lane Friends form a lane through which the couple has to pass. They try to keep the couple from passing, but not in the violent way. The symbolic meaning is passing through the problems in marriage.

Kidnapping the Bride for Ransom This tradition symbolizes a woman’s separation from her parents and a transition to a new living community. When the reception is almost over, friends of the newlyweds and/or groomsmen hide the bride. Her husband must find her within a specific period of time; otherwise, he must buy her back - pay ransom - to symbolize the fact that he has promised to care for and protect her.

The groom must also pay ransom once again at the exit of the church

Dancing with the Veil At around midnight after the ceremony, the bride is blindfolded and does a ceremonial dance around all her single women guests/friends holding her veil.

She is to pick out a girl and pin or place the veil on her, and whichever girl she chooses is next to be engaged. This tradition is similar to the throwing of the bridal bouquet.
