A Touching Story Thanks to Lodge 79, Corpus Christi President Mark Rebecek for sharing this touching story (author unknown): Time is like a river. You cannot touch the water twice, because the flow that has passed will never pass again.

Enjoy every moment of life. As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently, I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man.

He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper’s cemetery in the Nova Scotia back country.

As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost, and being a typical man, I didn’t stop for directions.

I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone, and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left, and they were eating lunch. I felt badly and apologized to the men for being late.

I went to the side of the grave and looked down, and the vault lid was already in place. I didn’t know what else to do, so I started to play.

The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends. I played like I’ve never played before for this homeless man. And as I played “Amazing Grace,” the workers began to weep.

They wept, I wept, we all wept together. When finished, I packed up my

bagpipes and started for my car.

Though my head was hung low, my heart was full.

As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, “I never seen anything like that before, and I’ve been putting in septic tanks for 20 years.” Apparently, I’m still lost . . . it’s a man thing.

District News District One seeks “trunk-or-treat” hosts Sunday, Oct. 20 at Lodge 186, Caldwell Dear District One Members, Save the date . . . the District One Trunk-or-Treat is Sunday, October 20, 2019, at Lodge 186, Caldwell at 3 p.m.

Youth and adults are encouraged to dress in Halloween costumes. We are looking for volunteers to host the trunk games and candy stops. Volunteers will decorate their vehicle’s trunk and fill it with candy and treats - or play a game, and youth will then walk by to receive the candy/treats. Volunteers are also encouraged to dress in costume.

District Three to enjoy Heritage Day Sunday, Oct. 20 at Sokol Dallas Dear District Three Members, We invite everyone to come out and celebrate Heritage Day on Sunday, October 20, 2019, at Sokol Hall, 7448 Greenville Avenue in Dallas, Texas 75231 from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.

The event is presented by the American Czech Slovak Culture Society and its member societies—SPJST, Sokol, WFLA, KJT, KJZT, RVOS, and Vaclav Havel Czech School of Dallas and includes folklore performances from the Czech Republic.

Opening ceremonies is at 11 a.m. and includes a performance by Dallas Czech Orchestra. The program from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. includes Mužátske Sbory Charvačané a Valtičan, a folklore band from the Czech Republic; beseda dancers; folk singers and dancers; a performance featuring the children from the Czech School of Dallas; and a Sokol

gymnastics exhibition. There will be children’s activities throughout the day.

A live band will play from 3 to 6 p.m. for your listening and dancing pleasure.

Admission is $5 per person (ages 16 and under are free of charge), but if you wear your kroj, you get in for free!

Lots of food and refreshments will be available for purchase, including a traditional Czech meal of pork, sausage, dumplings, sauerkraut, green beans, and salad for $15 per plate and served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Kolaches, klobase sandwiches, strudel, tea, and coffee will also be available for purchase throughout the day.

District Five Fall Family Fun Day Saturday, Oct. 19 at Lodge 88, Houston District Five Members, What better way to kick-off Fall 2019? A family fun day at Czech Fest at SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, located at 1435 Beall Street in Houston, Texas 77008. The district had such a great time last year combining the events that the district officers agreed to do it again this year. The event is from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. with The Telstars performing from 8 to 11:30 p.m. Czech Fest is open to the public, but SPJST District Five members will have discounted admission: District Five Youth - free of charge District Five Adults (ages 18 to 64) - $5 District Five Adults (age 65 and over) - free of charge Activities for the day will include fun and games for both youth and adults, sausage and sauerkraut (served from 4 to 6 p.m.), live music from the SPJST Lodge 88 Czech Orchestra and Chorus, and Adrian’s Fault will close out the day.

The district will host a cornhole tournament, and there will be the traditional kolache eating contest. Food trucks will be available to purchase lunch to eat on the grounds.

District Five Youth will have a bake sale from 12 noon to 4 p.m. Please support the youth, as they are the future of SPJST. The youth Christmas ornament contest will be held with registration from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Please see the SPJST Youth Handbook for rules to enter and guidelines set by the Youth Department.

Everyone is welcome to stay for SPJST Lodge 88’s dance featuring The Telstars from 8 to 11:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased for adults $15 each presale

Fraternal leaders meet to learn, collaborate in Washington, D.C.

By Brian Vanicek SPJST President Continuing education and personal development are crucial in just about every business and occupation. That especially goes for businesses like ours – financial services – that involve a high level of technology. The American Fraternal Alliance – SPJST’s national trade association – regularly holds events with seminars, workshops, and classes that help fraternal leaders learn and grow in their profession. Apart from the in-session activities, participants have opportunities for peer-to-peer conversations, further enabling them to share experience and knowledge.

This week’s “Fraternal Focus” column comes to you from the concourse of the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, following the conclusion of the Alliance’s 2019 Executive Summit. A total of 40 fraternal benefit societies participated in the two-day conference which covered topics ranging from cybersecurity and regulatory compliance to innovative strategies for maximizing the return on Home Office operations.

The 2020 elections have the potential to have a profound impact on the business community, especially the financial services sector. Control of the White House, Senate, and House as well as governorships in key states may solidify the regulatory reforms enacted over the past four years or they could open the door to expanded government oversight at both the state and federal level. Guest presenter Joyce Mayer, executive vice president for government relations at the American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI), shared her insights on what could be at stake.

One of the additional benefits of participating in events hosted by the Alliance is the ability to support the mission of the nationwide Fraternal Benefit System and possibly influence legislation that affects the industry. With the increased level of government regulation in our industry, it

is important to take proactive measures.

Correspondingly, the two-day program included Congressional office visits by delegations comprised of Society leaders.

Participating in our group were Catholic Life President Mike Belz, KJT President Chris Urban, KJT Vice President David Wagner, SPJST Controller Roy Vajdak, and myself. I especially enjoyed our visit to Capitol Hill and the opportunity to spread the good word on what each of our respective fraternal benefits societies have done – historically and in recent times – to warrant our 501(c)8 tax-exempt status.

The session entitled “What Is Customer Experience” explored the impact of “Insurtech” on the member experience and how the consumer market is forcing change across all industries. The term “Insurtech” refers to new technologies that are designed to increase the efficiency and efficacy of insurance companies. President Mike Logsdon, co-founder and chief operating officer of Life.io, outlined some of the current challenges in the Insurance and Financial Services sector and provided an overview of how our respective organizations can take advantage of these new methodologies. So much information to digest and share with fellow officers and directors at our October Supreme Lodge meeting!

One Good Thing Leads to Another On a related note, getting to Washington, D.C. included a plane ride. On the flight in, the lady sitting next to me was very curious about the well-marked book I was reading. “What is it, and why do you have all of those pages marked,” she wanted to know . . . The book in reference was The Esssential Wooden: A Lifetime of Lessons on Leaders and Leadership by John Wooden and Steve Jamison. Copies of the book were shared with each of our officers and directors and Editor/Director of Communication during our September 10 and 11 strategic planning process.

Basketball fans, especially, will recognize Wooden’s name as one of the winningest coaches of all time. Observing Czech Heritage Month October is Czech Heritage Month in Texas. That is something to consider if you are looking for an enjoyable theme for your October meeting. Here is an idea: How about hosting a covered dish social at your October meeting with an emphasis on Czech food? Many good traditional and modern recipes can be found in the SPJST Cookbooks.

Celebrating Heritage Day In regarding Czech Heritage Month in Texas, members can travel to Dallas to partake in Heritage Day. This year, Celebrating Heritage Day will take place Sunday, October 20 at Dallas Sokol, located at 7448 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, Texas 75231.

Opening ceremonies start at 11 a.m. and will finish at 6 p.m. There will be food, refreshments, dancers, parade of kroj, performances, a Czech band, and dancing.

Calendar of Events Please remember to mark your calendars for the 2020 SPJST State Tournaments. State tournaments will be held at the SPJST Home Office in Temple.

Entry for the tournaments will be $20 for members and non-members. There will be Czech pastries in the morning, a catered meal for participants during the noon hour, and fun and fellowship.

Lodge 15, Buckholts plans Oct. 13 fundraiser dinner

President Milton Peterson called the meeting to order on Sunday, September 8, 2019, at 2 p.m. The youth led the Pledge of Allegiance and SPJST motto.

A moment of silence was observed for the sick and deceased of the lodge.

Sister Georgie Soukup was absent.

There were 33 adults and several children present. Sister Barbara Hykel read the minutes from the last meeting. Sister Peggy Dobecka gave the treasurer’s and youth reports.

A get well card was sent to Sister Georgie Soukup. Both progressive door prize winners for $10 and $4 were absent.

Brother Don Urbanovsky gave the report on the picnic, and we were very successful.

Attendance door prize winners were Pam Urbanovsky, Henry Blahuta, and Mary Neckar. The youth prepared a noon meal for Grandparents Day, and it was wonderful.

The quarterly meeting of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts was held Wednesday, September 25, 2019. All officers were present. Sandie Fischer read the minutes of the last meeting and gave the treasurer’s report. They were approved as read.

Next Meeting—October 4 The next meeting will be this Friday, October 4 with a meal at 6:30 p.m.; the meeting will follow at 7 p.m.

Fundraiser Dinner—October 13 President Mary Helen Rodriguez reported bookings for the hall are down a little so it was decided we will go ahead with plans for our fundraiser dinners beginning Sunday, October 13. The menu will be meatloaf with special sauce, mashed potatoes and gravy, fried corn, rolls, banana pudding, and tea for $10.

The dinner will be available beginning at 11 a.m. until sold out at the lodge hall on Highway 36 in Buckholts. Vice President Scott Brandon will design and distribute flyers and design mailouts. We will also begin hamburger sales on Fri-

day, October 18.

The next meeting will be December 18.

Lodge 51, Ellinger members enjoy annual picnic The SPJST Lodge 51, Ellinger annual picnic was held on Saturday, July 13, 2019, at the new fire station in Ellinger. President Calvin Hlinsky presided over the meeting. There were 25 members and five guests in attendance.

A barbecue pork dinner with all of the trimmings and desserts was served to family members and guests. We were pleased to have District One Director/Supreme Lodge Chairman Donnie Victorick, wife Janice, and granddaughter Addison attend. A silent auction was held, and door prizes were also given. A great time was had by all.

Lodge 66, Waco gives to community organizations

The meeting of SPJST Lodge 66, Waco was called to order by President John Engelke on Monday, September 16, 2019 at St. Paul’s Church at 6 p.m. with all officers present. There were 12 members present and four guests - Joan Shelton, Hannah, Fiona, and Reid Galler.

The Pledge of Allegiance and motto were recited by all.

Secretary Sister Dana McAdams read the minutes of the August meeting, and they were approved as read.

Sister Dana McAdams received a note from Vice President Hiram Dixon stating that Lodge 66 has a new sales agent - Anthony Howard.

Sister Diana Engelke received a thank you card from St. Paul’s Church Quilt Club for the $100 donation made in August.

Sister Dorothy Veselka reported that she sent a get well card to President John Engelke. She thanked Sister Diana Engelke for the card she sent to Dorothy Veselka from the lodge.

FAC Diana Engelke read a letter from State FAC Frank Horak. She reminded members of the District Three Meeting on Sunday, October 20 to be held at Sokol Hall in Dallas.

Bookkeeper Sister Diana Engelke gave the bookkeeping report.

A $100 donation for September is being made to Tri Cities for food only.

Congratulations to S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living for achieving these superior recognition awards in 2014, 2017, and 2019! These plaques are proudly displayed in the facility in Taylor. The Senior Living currently has facilities in Taylor, Needville, and Hillje.

September 24, 2019, was an important day for Texas A&M AGEC 425 “Survivor” Ryan Drapela ‘19. A few months ago, during the Texas Farm Credit Entrepreneurial Dreams Symposium held in May, Ryan was recognized as the 2019 Rural Entrepreneur of the Year. Lodge 151, Wharton honors deceased members with memorial service SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton held its quarterly meeting and memorial service on Monday, September 9, 2019, at Wharton Depot Museum. A light meal was served to 14 members and 10 guests. David Bucek led the prayer before the meal.

President Macha called the meeting to order at 7:14 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and a moment of silence was held for our departed members. The roll was called, and all officers were present. The families of Julius Kalina, Josephine Nitsche, Bennie Wasicek, Charles Bucek, and Regional General Agent (RGA) Carolina Covarrubia were our special guests.

President Macha recessed the meeting at 7:17 p.m. A memorial service was held for departed Lodge 151 members Dorothy Charbula, Albert Chumchal, Julius Kalina, Josephine Nitsche, Joe Macek, Floyd Simicek, Bennie Wasicek, and Charles Bucek. Edith Molberg conducted the memorial service. A candle was lit for each departed member.

President Macha resumed the meeting at 7:43 p.m. The June minutes and treasurer’s report were handed out to the members. After they had been reviewed, David Bucek made a motion to accept them. Carolyn Bucek seconded the motion. Motion passed.

Secretary Janie Bucek reported Priscilla Tavarez was a new sales agent and new member of Lodge 151. Next, Janie said two death claims had been paid.

Then she stated four members asked for transfers to other lodges. Last of all, she announced we had eight new members.

Janie Bucek then gave the fraternal activities coordinator’s report.

David Bucek stated he did not have anything to report about the SPJST District Six cemeteries.

David Bucek made a motion to accept our new member to Lodge 151.

Items discussed were committee member Dwayne Sefcik reaching out to all members regarding memberships.

Ennis Sewing Circle Ennis Sewing Circle met on Thursday, September 12, 2019, at Sokol Club Room. We had 22 members, and two guests - Joan Markham and Paula Andrle.

We quilted on the Circle’s Christmas quilt, and Lillie Macalik volunteered to take it home and finish it off. We thank you so much for that!

After lunch, President Irene called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and a moment of silence was held for Vivian Vrana. The “Our Father” was recited for Vivian and all our sick members.

Kay Lynn Kovar had cards for us all to sign for Pat Fowler and Lil Kosarek as both were absent and not feeling well.

Quilt scheduler was announced that October, we will quilt for President Irene; November - for Anita Kubin; and December - we don’t quilt; we have our Christmas party.

It was announced that we need little dessert plates, dish soap, and foil. I don’t know if anyone volunteered to bring it next month. I hope so.

The 50-50 dollar game was won by President Irene, and Joann Markham won the bowl with holder brought by

Dorothy Kudrna.

President Irene thanked all for coming, the delicious lunch, set up, and clean up. She stated to all to be sure and come again next month - October 10.

We will quilt, have lunch, visit, and have a good time.

Heritage Day set for Sunday, Oct. 20 at Sokol Dallas We invite everyone to come out and celebrate Heritage Day on Sunday, October 20, 2019, at Sokol Hall, 7448 Greenville Avenue in Dallas, Texas 75231 from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.

The event is presented by the American Czech Slovak Culture Society and its member societies—SPJST, Sokol, WFLA, KJT, KJZT, RVOS, and Vaclav Havel Czech School of Dallas and includes folklore performances from the Czech Republic.

Opening ceremony begins at 11 a.m. and includes a performance by Dallas Czech Orchestra. The program from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. includes Mužátske Sbory Charvačané a Valtičan, a folklore band from the Czech Republic; beseda dancers; folk singers and dancers; a performance featuring the children from the Czech School of Dallas; and a Sokol gymnastics exhibition. There will be children’s activities throughout the day.

A live band will play from 3 to 6 p.m. for your listening and dancing pleasure.

Admission is $5 per person (ages 16 and under are free of charge), but if you wear your kroj, you get in for free!

Lots of food and refreshments will be available for purchase, including a traditional Czech meal of pork, sausage, dumplings, sauerkraut, green beans, and salad for $15 per plate and served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Kolaches, klobase sandwiches, strudel, tea, and coffee will also be available for purchase throughout the day.

State Fraternal Director shares October youth news Fall is finally here! The smell of fresh baked apple pies, Starbucks pumpkin spice latte, hayrides, bonfires, corn mazes, and colorful autumn leaves. Halloween and Thanksgiving are just around the corner, and the beauty and bounty of nature are indisputable.

2020 State Youth Achievement Day Update In last month’s newsletter, I made reference to a change in the date for State YAD. Please mark your 2020 calendar

for Saturday, July 25 as SPJST State Youth Achievement Day. It will be held at the Temple Cultural Activities Center, which is located next door to the Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center. The Auditorium has 475 seats plus six wheelchair places, and room for crafts. Please know the change in venue is due to youth being unable to attend due to school activities starting the first week of August.

2020 Camp Dates During the 2019 Youth Leaders Workshop, District Youth Counselors, Camp Director Rob Clift, and myself came together to finalize the camp dates for 2020. We decided these weeks will be the set time for camps in the years to come. I am happy to say we were able to keep camps from being back-to-back and avoiding holidays such as Father’s Day and Independence Day. LIT/Teen camp will always start the fourth Wednesday of June.

The first junior camp session will always be the first Wednesday after the fourth of July.

The second junior camp session will be following the Wednesday after the first camping session.

This will help families know year to year when SPJST camp will be held just as State Youth Achievement Day. Here are the dates for 2020 camps: LIT/Teen Camp Wednesday, June 24 to Sunday, June 28 Junior Camp Session 1 Wednesday, July 8 to Sunday, July 12

Junior Camp Session 2 Wednesday, July 15 to Sunday, July 19 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive The 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive began October 1. All youth club members who donate $2 or more will receive two merit points. Youth club members who donate $5 or more will receive a certificate acknowledging their gift. This is such an easy way to earn merit points while making a difference in the future of our young members.

Make a Difference Day Make a Difference Day is Saturday, October 26. Young and old, individuals and groups can carry out a volunteer project for the homeless, or as personal as spending an afternoon helping an elderly neighbor or relative. All members who participate will earn two points in the merit point system.

Youth and adults are encouraged to dress in Halloween costumes. We are looking for volunteers to host the trunk games and candy stops. Toffee’s Kittens

We found more kittens under our barn. At first, they were wild. Now, they’re tame. We haven’t named them yet. So right now, they are kitten one, kitten two, and kitten three.

Waxahachie; also known as the Battle of 287. Thankfully, we won! Unfortunately, it was very late at night when the game ended, and we drove straight from the game to West. We got to our hotel at 12:30 a.m. The next morning was the Westfest parade.

For the parade, I was able to ride on a beautiful, red Corvette with State King Luc. We got to toss candy to the crowd and wave our best “parade wave.” Occasionally, I would hear a friend or family member call out my name.

After the parade, we got to sit and listen to the amazing Czech music for a while. Then, Luc, Aubrey, Hudson, and I were introduced in the amphithe-

ater. Luc and I said a few words about SPJST, making a commercial-like appearance. It was really exciting to speak in front of strangers about an organization I know and love.

Later that day and the next day, my family and I went to the pavilions and danced to the beautiful Czech music.

We listened to bands such as the Moravians, Brave Combo, Ennis Czech Boys, and Czech and Then Some.

While at Westfest, I was asked about what SPJST is, and I was given the opportunity to explain all the wonderful things that SPJST holds.

Although Westfest was my first appearance as SPJST State Queen, I already know that this is going to be a fantastic year!

2019 - 2020 Youth Club Member Update - Merit Points and Meeting Attendance First Quarter Merit Points and Meeting Attendance The totals below in the column labeled “Pts” are merit points earned in the June 2019 to May 2020 youth year. This is total merit points for the 2019-2020 youth year thus far. Please see “What is the Merit Point System?” for complete information about the contest.

The number in the column labeled “Mtgs” is the number of meetings each youth club member has attended from June 2019 to May 2020. Please see “What is an Active Youth Member?” below to determine number of meetings needed to participate in youth activities.

What is the Merit Point System?

Youth club members earn merit points for participating in SPJST lodge, district, and state activities. At the end of the youth year, points are totaled and the youth with the highest points in the youth club receive cash awards.

Contest Dates June 1, 2019 to May 31, 2020 Merit Point Contest Age Divisions Junior—Entering Kindergarten to Age 12 Teen—Age 13 to High School Senior Rules The youth leader or assistant youth leader is responsible for keeping track of the merit points for each active member of the youth club. The points are to be sent to the State Fraternal Director on the Quarterly and Merit Point Reports each quarter. Youth club members are also encouraged to keep up with their points and turn them in to the youth leader on a quarterly basis. This system helps both the youth leader and the youth member keep better records of youth participation.

Current, official Quarterly and Merit Point Reports, available from the State Fraternal Director may only be used in the Merit Point Contest.

The Quarterly and Merit Point Reports sent to the State Fraternal Director by the youth leader will be kept on file for at least six months following the conclusion of the contest.

Merit points are earned for only those activities listed under Youth Point Values.

An activity can only earn points in one category on the point sheet.

When in doubt about any activity earning points, contact the State Fraternal Director prior to the contest conclusion.

Everyone will be subject to the same rules in every contest. Failure to comply with any rule shall mean immediate withdrawal.

Merit Point Awards First through fifth place awards are presented in the junior and teen divisions of each youth club. The amount of points that top winners receive in both divisions will determine where the point rankings of the first through fifth winning categories begin. First place winners will be those equal to and 20 points below the top place winner in their age division. Second Place will be 21 to 40 points below the top winner in their age division. Third place will be 41 to 60 points below the top winner in their age division. Fourth place will be 61 to 80 points below the top winner in their age division. Fifth place will be 81 to 100 points below the top winner in their age division.

Awards are presented on the lodge, district, and state levels in the junior and teen merit point contests. At each District YAD, the Home Office presents first through fifth place awards to qualifying junior and teen youth club members. The junior and teen with the most points in each district also receive recognition. In the event of a tie, all who tied for first place will receive the award.

A youngster with a current SPJST insurance certificate may enter the youth program the youth year that he/she will be entering kindergarten.

To be considered active, youth club member must attend a majority (seven) of the monthly meetings during the year. The youth must attend the

majority of these meetings at his/her home youth club. In those instances where a lodge does not have a youth club, the youngster may attend adult lodge meetings or the meetings of another youth club. The youngster will be eligible for camp and Youth Achievement Day (YAD) after the completion of his/her kindergarten year. Active youth members must be single and not be pregnant or a parent.

The age of the youth on June 1 of the current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.).

The youth year begins June 1 and ends May 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school.

In Memoriam In Memory of Gordon Hubenak Gordon Lee Hubenak, age 72, passed away on Wednesday, September 11, 2019.

Visitation was held Saturday, September 14 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Mount Olivet Chapel in Fort Worth, Texas. Funeral service was at 3:30 p.m. at the Chapel.

Gordon was born February 26, 1947, in Fort Worth to the late Esta Belle and Joe Gordon Hubenak P. Hubenak. Gordon played football and received All District honors in high school and All American while at McMurry University.

His love of sports and kids led to his 40year career as a teacher, coach, and administrator in Fort Worth ISD. Gordon was a coach at O.D. Wyatt High School; coach and assistant principal at Southwest High School; assistant principal and principal at Trimble Tech High School; and coach and assistant principal at Hill School of Fort Worth.

When he wasn’t working with kids at his school, he was working with them in the community. Whether he was playing Santa Claus, being a youth leader for SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth, or teaching kids to swim, his huge heart for kids could be seen.

Family meant the world to Gordon, and he spent time with them at the lake house playing dominoes, boating, fishing, and scuba diving. Gordon met the love of his life while working at Burgers Lake in 1965. His family and friends will miss him greatly.

Gordon was a member of SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth, where he served as president for more than 10 years and youth leader for four decades. He also served as District Three President from 2009 to 2011.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother Joe Paul Hubenak, Jr. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Cheryl Hubenak; daughters Holly Anderson and spouse Jason and Melissa Spivey and spouse Kellie; grandchildren

Blake, Brooklyn, Taylor, and Lauren; sister Kathryn Swinford; nieces and nephews Phyllis, Paul, Michael, Staci, Alexa, Adam, and Terry; and many more family and friends.

Resolution of Sympathy

In Memory of Vivian Vrana

We, the members of SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the family of GEORGENE CHUMCHAL. Georgene Chumchal, age 91, of Wharton, Texas, passed away Saturday, September 21, 2019, in El Campo.

Georgene was born on January 21, 1928, in Garwood to the late Edward and Julia Brosman Labay.

Georgene was raised in the Garwood area and attended school there. She married Georgene Chumchal Albert Chumchal on June 4, 1946. He preceded her in death on October 12, 2018.

She worked as a farmers’ wife. Many days were spent tending the garden, sewing clothes, canning vegetables, cooking every meal, and baking delicious pastries. She enjoyed traveling and hunting and fishing with her friends and family. Many days Albert and Georgene could be seen at dances and celebrations around the area.

In addition to her parents and husband, Georgene was preceded in death by grandson Greg Chumchal.

She was a member of SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton.

Vivian Jurica Vrana, age 86, passed away peacefully in Ennis, Texas, joining her husband on Sunday, September 1, 2019.

Visitation was held on Thursday, September 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. in J.E. Keever Mortuary in Ennis with rosary at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian burial was held on Friday, September 6 at 10 a.m. at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church with Father John Dick as celebrant.

Vivian Vrana Pallbearers were Jonathan Kuběna, Michael Kuběna, Richard Vrana, James Trojacek, Richard Hornik, and Richard Spaniel. Interment followed in St. Joseph Cemetery under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary, Inc. An only child, Vivian was born on June 21, 1933, to Joe W. and Leona (Haskovec) Jurica in Ennis. She grew up in Ennis and was a graduate of Ennis High School with the class of 1950. On November 10, 1952, she married Johnny F. Vrana, and they made their home in Ennis.

Vivian was a member of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis. She was also a member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, charter member of Ennis Catholic Daughters of America, Bluebonnet Patches Quilters Guild of Ennis, and KJZT. Vivian was preceded in death by her husband Johnny F. Vrana on September 29, 2014; infant son Randy Joe Vrana on September 27, 1960; parents Joe and Leona Jurica; and son-in-law Frank A. Kuběna on June 21, 2018.

Vivian is survived by daughter Cindy Kuběna; and grandsons Jonathan Kuběna and Michael Kuběna.

Paul Jerry Kopecky, 89, of Richmond, Texas, passed away June 26, 2019. He was born on December 31, 1929, in El Campo to the late Joe and Annie Halamicek Kopecky.

He served in the United States Army and the United States Air Force. Paul graduated from the UniPaul Kopecky versity of Texas and went to work at Wyatt’s Cafeteria in 1957 and retired as CEO in 1994.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton.

He is survived by daughters Diane Spinks and husband Powell of Vadito, New Mexico, Sharon Hayes and husband Jim of Rockport, Debbie Mercatante and husband Mike of Dripping Springs; son Paul Jerry Kopecky, Jr. of Houston; 12 grandchildren; 22 greatgrandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews who called him “Uncle Pistol.”

Paul was preceded in death by beloved wife Bernice Mary Kopecky; parents; six brothers; and two sisters.

Visitation was from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, June 30 at Triska Funeral Home.

Funeral service was at 10 a.m. Monday, July 1 at the funeral home. Burial, under the auspices of the American Legion Post 251, followed at Garden of Memories Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jody Kopecky, Lawrence Kana, David Cannell, Bruce Krenek, Chris Kopecky, and David Kana. Honorary pallbearers were Barry Reinhardt, Billy Joe Kopecky, and Larry Krenek.

Ushers were Gordon Newton, Alan Roy Krenek, and Butch Houseworth.

Memorial donations in memory of Paul may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

In Memory of Mary Jane Urbanovsky Mary Jane (Kaluza) Urbanovsky, age 61, of Elm Mott, Texas, formerly of West, passed away early Tuesday afternoon, September 17, 2019, at Baylor Scott and White Hospital in Temple.

A rosary was recited at 2 p.m.

Sunday, September 22 at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel, followed by visitation until 4 p.m. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Mary J. Urbanovsky September 23 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption in West with Reverend Ed Karasek as celebrant. Burial followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery near West.

Mary Jane was born December 12, 1957, in Waco, the daughter of the late Alfred and Aline (Marek) Kaluza. She attended St. Mary’s School and was a 1976 graduate of West High School.

Mary Jane was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption and was known to be very strong in her faith and adamant about saying her prayers daily. She was also a member of SPJST Lodge 54, West. She worked at Lorch Manufacturing and Stuckey’s prior to becoming a printer for Tatex Printing in Waco from 1983 to 2012.

Mary Jane, affectionately known as “Nanny,” loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, most of all especially attending all of their sporting and school events. She enjoyed sewing, dancing, visiting with her friends, watching Hallmark movies, and making her mom’s angel food cake. She found joy in being outdoors while admiring her wind chimes and solar lights and watching beautiful sunsets.

Survivors include her dearly beloved children, Keith Urbanovsky and fiancé Kerri Niemeyer of Elm Mott and Kasandra Kalina and husband Aaron of West; beloved grandchildren Paige, Kinsey, Wyatt and Savanna; siblings Dottie Tichavsky and husband Raymond, Jimmy Kaluza, Freddie Kaluza and wife Janice, Ronnie Kaluza and wife Linda, Danny Kaluza, Arlene Hoelscher and husband Phil, and Tommy Kaluza and wife Kelly; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

In Memory of Johnny L. Chervenka Funeral service for Johnny L. Chervenka, Jr. of Rogers was at 11 a.m.

Monday, September 16, 2019, at Ocker Brethren Church with Reverend Larry Zabcik officiating. Burial was in Ocker Brethren Church Cemetery.

Mr. Chervenka passed away Wednesday, September 11 in a Temple Care Center.

Mr. Chervenka was born July 18, 1944, in Temple to Johnny L. Chervenka, Sr. and Martha Repka Johnny L. Chervenka Chervenka.

He graduated from Rogers High School in 1962 and graduated from Temple College where he played basketball. He served in the National Guard. He married Carol Sebek on February 14, 1970.

He worked for the First State Bank in Rogers. He then worked at Texell Credit Union for 46 years. He retired as senior loan officer.

He was a member of Ocker Brethren Church and SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone.

Survivors include wife Carol Chervenka of Rogers; son John Paul Chervenka and wife Jennifer of Rogers; daughter Tracey Chervenka and Jerome Stowers of Temple; brother Jimmy Don Chervenka of Brenham; and eight grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Youth Department of Ocker Brethren Church.

Visitation was from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, September 15 at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home.

He was born on February 7, 1945, to

John and Hilda Mary Trcalek. Robert was most recently from Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was a Vietnam vet and recipient of the Purple Heart.

Good Grief News What IS A BEREAVEMENT CENTER?

By Sabrina N. Young, CFSP Young’s Daughter’s Funeral Home and Bereavement Center Founder Lodge 47, Seaton It is my pleasure to announce that Bell County is the site of a new, full-service Bereavement Center located at 4235 East Business 190 in Temple.

You might be wondering, “What is a bereavement center?” A bereavement center is a safe place to explore your grieving emotions, find help with the mourning process, and get support as you go through the transition processes that are part of the grief journey.

As a veteran of two deployments to Iraq during my military service, as a funeral director serving in Central Texas who has a degree and is licensed, and after formally studying grief, I saw a real need among Bell County area families for a safe environment where people of all ages could find healing in their time of grief.

As more families contacted me, I saw a need for a place in the community for people to articulate their grief through support groups, yoga, crafting, and simply being listened to. Families also were seeking ways to honor their loved ones who had passed on holidays, family celebrations, and a place to recognize and honor the legacies of their past generations.

They needed places, locally, to connect with others on this journey, assistance with the life transitions that come with death, and a place where their burden of grief could be lightened when it became too heavy to bear.

On January 1, 2020, Young’s Daughters Funeral Home and Bereavement Center will open to the community, offering meeting space and classes to help with coping and healing activities to help those experiencing grief to begin their healing. Meetings at the Center will encourage sharing, education about grief, self-help classes to include exercises to relieve grief, and shepherding support as families experience grief’s transitions.

Assistance also will be available to help understand death benefits, Social Security, compensation from the Texas Attorney General for wrongful death, legal paperwork, and genealogy classes. The Center will offer a grief library and special help for families coping with death resulting from murder or suicide, sibling’s loss, loss through disaster, and compound grief.

There also will be assistance for veterans’ families wanting to pre-arrange interment in veterans’ cemeteries and additional resources for grief.

The space will be available for all other Bell County associations and organizations for meetings and advertisement to offer their support to the community.

Brazos Valley CHS Czech Heritage Celebration set for Oct. 13 Brazos Valley Czech Heritage Society (BVCHS) will hold its annual Czech Heritage Month Celebration on Sunday, October 13, 2019, with polka masses, dinner, and dancing. The celebration begins with two polka masses at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 600 East 26th Street in Bryan, Texas. Taylor Czech Chorus will be featured during the masses. Following the masses, a dinner will be served at St. Joseph Catholic Church Parish Activity Center beginning at 1 p.m. Cost of the meal and dance will be $15 for adults and children age 12 and under are $6. Reservations for the catered dinner are required. The Moravians of Ennis will perform from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. for your favorite polka, waltz, and two-step dancing. Dance only admission is $10 per person. The general public is invited to come join in the celebration of Czech heritage.

October is Czech Heritage Month in Texas!

Czech Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of American Czechs and the many contributions they have made to American culture.

In celebration, the Věstník invites you to participate in its Czech Heritage Month Activities. Several Czech-themed prizes will be awarded in a drawing from entries received.
