e were saddened to hear that the SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville hall was damaged by an accidental fire on Tuesday, July 16, 2019. The lodge is located outside of Taylor in District Two. Austin’s FOX 7 News reported that the building was recently struck by lightning, which may have caused issues with the building’s air conditioning unit, according to investigators. The fire was mostly contained in the attic space.

Thanks to first responders from Thrall, Coupland, Taylor, Weir, Hutto, Round Rock, Pflugerville, and Georgetown fire departments and Williamson County EMS. Lodge 48 was chartered in 1903.

The hall was built in 1929 using lumber from a church, according to Taylor Press. In the early 1960s, the building underwent renovations, adding indoor bathrooms, a storage room, a kitchen area, a bar, and space for tables. The lodge underwent renovations again in 2003 and the restorations were completed in 2006.

The hall - which has touched many generations of people - is an important element in the community and hosts many weddings, holiday celebrations, family reunions, and SPJST local lodge events and district meetings.

“It’s a real loss in the community,” Honorary District Two Director Bobby Wuensche told FOX 7 News in an oncamera interview. But now it’s time to rebuild. “No, we’re not gonna give up.

In fact, I was thinking on the way out here, ‘you know, this isn’t a loss as much as something that will get us to work together better’,” Honorary Director Wuensche added.

It’s almost here – the 13th Annual Corpus Christi Getaway Weekend – August 9 to 11, 2019, at Emerald Beach Hotel in Corpus Christi! We look forward to seeing a lot of friendly familiar faces and a lot of new ones, too!

Most attendees are staying at Emerald Beach Hotel. Reserve your rooms now by calling Emerald Beach Hotel directly at 361-883-5731 and refer to group code “SPJST” to assure that you get the discounted rate of $119 per night.

Applicable taxes apply. Those who reserve bay front or beachfront rooms will be charged an additional amount.

The room rate does not include breakfast; however, please know that the hotel offers a great breakfast buffet for $10.95. Children under 10 can enjoy the buffet for $5. With regards to fridge and microwave, most of the rooms are without. Typically, that’s not much of an issue; however, if you have specialty items that require chilling, I recommend that you bring a cooler.

Recognition for sculptures will be given in several categories.

At the end of the day, everyone goes home with memories of a great day at the Corpus Christi Beach filled with fun, sand, and sun.

Recent Foundation projects include the relocation and restoration of SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad to the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange, Hurricane Harvey relief efforts, assisting Texas cities along Texas’ gulf coast, and the SPJST Founder’s Day Celebration in collaboration with and to assist SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville in 2018.

Lodge 24, Cyclone to host Jerry Haisler for New Year’s Eve SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone met on Monday night, July 8, 2019, at Flag Hall amid fields laden down with corn and milo with heads that are larger than ever before. Cotton is in many stages - as planting was between rains. The wheat made about 70 bushels per acre.

The meeting was called to order by President Daniel Wilde at 7:02 p.m. He had a silent prayer for our deceased members and members of the military.

Margaret Mikeska read the minutes of the last meeting after the blessing bags which this writer went home after the blessing bags so there was no report on that meeting.

VĚSTNÍK Linda Wilde gave the treasurer’s report. Correspondence was from Amya Rodriguez and Ty Stock for their $50 graduation checks. It’s good to know that ‘thank you’ has not gone out of style.

Mark Maddux gave the bar and hall reports. The Corpus Christi Getaway was mentioned.

New business was that Mark was signing a contract with Jerry Haisler and the Melody 5 for New Year’s Eve. Tickets are $15 and will be sold in advance by Linda Wilde. The kitchen will not be open that evening. Food will be allowed in by everyone.

Daniel Wilde will be in charge on securing a new cooler to replace the old railroad car that is there now. The cost will be from 10k to 15k, he thinks.

The only birthday was Barbara Macek on July 3 with a surprise party by her family. She is 29 and holding!

No one is on the sick list as the writer got an excellent report from his treatment.

The lodge sends its sympathy to Linda Wilde and her sister Rose Vrazel on the passing of their mother Albina Vrazel, and sympathy to Steve Vansa, who was Albin’s brother. The writer attended Cyclone School with Albina and Steve.

Scholarship Awards Ceremony The scholarship awards ceremony began. Criteria for receiving these scholarships was that the applicant must be a high school graduate; enrolled in a university, college or trade school; and a local member whose parent or grandparent is, or was, an active local lodge member. Members present to receive their awards from the lodge were Erica Clark, Amanda Droste, Brandon Droste, Jarron Honza, and Justin Mraz.

Erica Clark, a graduate of Heath High School, is enrolled at Texas A&M University and was eligible for the Lodge 25 scholarship through grandparents Johnnie I and Margaret Krajca.

Austin Holland was an active youth.

He is a graduate of Plano High School and is enrolled at Collin County College. He was eligible for the scholarship through grandmother Rita Holland as well as through great-grandparents Johnnie I and Margaret Krajca.

Jared Mraz is a graduate of Ennis High School. He is enrolled at Texas A&M University and was eligible through grandparents Ron and Carol Mraz as well as through great-grandparents Alvin and Wilma Nesuda.

Lodge 18, Elgin hosts The Lost Cause Band for polka dance

The Lost Cause Band . . . Is this a country band or a polka band? Well, they played for a polka dance at SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin on Sunday, June 30, 2019. Well, we can tell you that this band is both! What great music! We had a wonderful time with fantastic dancing music! The crowd was not that great, though, as we had to compete with The Dujka Brothers who were playing in Granger.

We had a family reunion; one of the band members who filled in, brought a group. They were a fun group. We enjoyed seeing the children. We visited with the band members; they are a great group of players.

ident Arlene Honza gave the bar income and expense reports including bartender salaries. FAC Kay Lynn Kovar reported no new activities scheduled in the near future. The youth reported no new members and no new recent activities.

Secretary Pat Fowler read a beautiful note from Dorothy Kudrna who recently received her 75-year membership pin.

The note reminisced about her family’s and ancestors’ contributions, leadership, volunteerism, and social and time spent with the lodge. We appreciate your supportive words, Dorothy!

Under old business, a big thank you to Emil Martinek who voluntarily graded the parking lot and spread new, coated gravel and to David Puente and his Whitehouse fencing crew who helped fix parking lot drainage issues.

Prize drawing tickets are still available for the “30 Guns in 30 Days” drawing. Please call any time or stop by the hall on Wednesday evening for additional details.

A reminder that every Wednesday, we have hot dog night and drink specials.

It was announced that the ice machine and the bar floor replacement is being scheduled at a time as to not interfere with any of the rentals. There was some discussion on the very positive feedback received on the decision to make our entire facility a smoke-free zone. Great job!

The floor was open to new business.

It was announced that Ronnie Dlabaj made several repairs to the wood dance

floor. A metal cap is being installed on the existing exterior stone. Repairs were made to the walk-in refrigerator. It was recommended that the electrical capacity of the breaker box be updated and increased. After some discussion, it was determined that this is a necessity and bids will be taken for this potential project.

With no other business to discuss, July birthdays and anniversaries were announced. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Charlie Jurcik, Brad Jones, and Jennifer Dvorak who were present. Pat and Van Fowler, who were present, were congratulated on their 50th anniversary this month.

The meeting adjourned, and the social began with 36 members, two youth, and one guest present.

Dorothy Lastovica of Lodge 38, Kovar displays a “Bless This Child” quilt that she made for a silent auction, which supports Angels Unaware Program. The program assists youth in Smithville ISD with food every Friday.

Lodge 40 El Campo-Hillje welcomes new members SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje had its regular monthly meeting on Sunday, June 9, 2019, at 1:20 p.m. at the lodge hall.

President Cathy Garcia called the meeting to order. She led the members in saying the Pledge of Allegiance. We also remembered the sick and the deceased members with a prayer. The minutes were approved as read from the May meeting. President Cathy had nothing to report from the Home Office. The packet wasn’t received in the mail from the Home Office in time for the June meeting.

Ardis Bacak made a motion with a second by Georgia Henderson to accept two new members into our lodge. The motion was approved by the members.

We would like to welcome Zaiydan Gonzalez and Daniel Gonzalez.

The treasurer’s report was tabled.

Cemetery Committee - Vlasta Bartos had nothing to report.

The youth club report was given by Cathy Garcia. She reported that the youth were getting ready for District Six Youth Achievement Day at Taiton Com-

Lodge 133 San Antonio meets this Sunday, July 28 Lodge 133, San Antonio will have its second quarterly meeting this Sunday, July 28, 2019, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Activity Center, located at 1630 Goliad Road.

Registration will begin at 1:30 p.m.

The meeting will begin at 2 p.m. Refreshments will be served after the meeting. A games party will follow.

Lodge 177, Academy reports on May meeting Board Meeting Lodge 177, Academy Board Chairman Bruce Tomastik called the meeting to order at 6:01 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8, 2019. All board members were accounted for.

Items to repair/replace were discussed - men’s restroom repairs and upgrades as well as professionally cleaning the dance floor.

President George Tomastik presented a $5,000 monetary donation to Academy ISD Superintendent Kevin Sprinkles.

We discussed moving the board meeting to 6:15 p.m. and the regular meeting to 6:30 p.m. It was brought to a motion by Bruce Tomastik, seconded by George Tomastik. It passed unanimously.

A motion to adjourn was made by Bill Hutka and seconded by Shirley McCrae. The motion passed, and the board meeting was adjourned at 6:21 p.m.

Lodge 191, Lufkin members make a difference with driveway repairs

The driveway at Lodge 191, Lufkin was breaking apart, and some great people decided to do something about it! The temperature was in the 90s, but these amazing people prevailed. It took about a week of hard work - cutting the old concrete and forming for the new addition, culminating with the pouring of three yards of concrete. It looks awesome, and a huge shout-out goes to Lodge 191 President George Scogin and his son Michael Scogin, Woody Porterfield, and A.C. Riley.

Regular Meeting The regular meeting of SPJST Lodge 177, Academy was called to order at 6:22 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8, 2019,

by President George Tomastik. All officers were present. Everyone stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Minutes from the previous meeting were approved as presented.

Committee reports were turned in to the secretary for April. These included reports for building, bingo account, special account, and bar account.

Under new business, the items discussed during the scheduled board meeting for upgrades to the men’s restroom were brought to attention by President George Tomastik. Local plumbing company Mauldin Plumbing will remove the current system and replace

with individual urinals. A motion was made by Bill Hutka to approve the upgrades, seconded by Dinell Tuerck. The motion was approved unanimously.

Other items discussed were the cleaning of the dance floor which would be tabled until the next meeting as well as insurance certificates and annuities with SPJST sales agent Nancy Miller.

The next regular meeting and board meeting was scheduled for Wednesday, July 10 at 6:15 p.m.

After a motion was made by Bruce Tomastik, seconded by Don McCrae, the meeting was adjourned at 7:15 p.m.

I got to perform beseda, I got to be royalty as duke, I made and entered five crafts, and I did an awesome talent. My favorite part of YAD was beseda. I practice very hard, and I think we did a good job.

Lodge 154, Fort Worth youth excited to be cheer captain Dear Readers, I can’t believe I made cheer captain!

The day I found out I made captain was the day I got my phone back at camp. I was with Holly, and we were both super excited. My coach called me and said, “Congratulations, Reagan! You are the 2019-2020 cheer captain.” I was so happy!

SPJST State Youth Achievement Day Saturday, August 3 in Temple SPJST will showcase its youth at State Youth Achievement Day (YAD) Saturday, August 3, 2019, at Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center, located at 3303 North Third Street in Temple.

SPJST youth who received first place honors at their district competitions across Texas this summer will compete at the state level in various competitions, including group and individual talent, speech, nine craft categories, and youth club poster and scrapbook. Following judging, all crafts, posters, and scrapbooks will be displayed for viewing.

Registration is 8:45 to 10 a.m.

All youth participants must register their entries between 8:45 and 10 a.m. in the lobby of the convention center.

Royalty contestants are asked to meet at the stage for a brief rehearsal and further instructions at 9:15 a.m. - after they register their entries.

Program Begins at 10:15 a.m.

The day’s program begins at 10:15 a.m. in the auditorium with SPJST Youth Club members performing the Ceska Beseda dance. Group and individual talent competition follows.

Young people who have completed kindergarten to high school senior will compete in dance, vocal, instrumentals, and dramatics.

Youth participate in a group talent skit at the 2018 SPJST State Youth Achievement Day.

Tyson Bilbrey of Lodge 47, Seaton; and State Queen Kelly House and State Duchess Jenna Fair, both of Lodge 202, Jourdanton, will preside over the 2019 SPJST State Royalty Competition which begins at approximately 1:30 p.m. The king and queen are selected on the basis of a prepared three-minute speech during which they are scored on content, delivery, and overall poise.

They are also scored on onstage interview questions. King and queen candidates are high school-aged SPJST youth club members.

The 2019-2020 State King and Queen will represent SPJST at events across Texas. They will also each receive $1,500 scholarships.

Scholarships totaling $11,500 will be presented to SPJST youth members during the day.

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club hosts SPJST Float in 100th Belton fourth of July parade

Lunch Available Lunch will be catered by Oscar Store.

It will include a hamburger or cheeseburger, chips, cookie, and tea for $6 and be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Concession food will be available throughout the day.

Silent Auction of Candies This year’s dessert category is candy.

Following judging, candy entries will be sold in a silent auction to the highest bidders. All proceeds will go to the SPJST Scholarship Fund (one-half) and Camp Kubena (one-half).

Super summer destination: Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center in Temple Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center (CHMGC) is located at 119 West French Avenue in Temple, Texas. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The phone number is 254-899-2935, and the website is czechheritagemuseum.org.

CHMGC is a small niche museum located on the border of the central business district and the historic residence district of Temple. It is housed in a charmingly mosaic-tiled 1931 store front located on a main artery through town.

Many Temple natives have fond memories of the space, when high school students would gather at the soda fountain of Northside Drug Store.

Although CHMGC was established as a non-profit entity in 2000, the collection itself had been accumulating since 1963 under the name of SPJST Library, Archives, and Museum. A call for donations in the organization’s Vestnik weekly newspaper resulted in an almost immediate inundation of items from Czech families around the state.

For many years, these items were housed in the basement SPJST Home Office and curated by volunteers. In 2009, the Museum opened at its current location next door to the SPJST Home Office.

We hope you will plan a trip to Temple to visit the Museum soon!
