The Road to Prague Leads Back to Home

By Brian Vanicek SPJST President I’m devoting the first half of this week’s “Fraternal Focus” to a personal testimonial for “Travel Insurance,” one of the new online benefits that SPJST now offers via its spjst.org website. Joan and I recently returned from the Czech Republic. It was a wonderful visit, but what made it even better was the peace of mind knowing that if something happened to us along the way, our daughter and our son would have been well-provided for. The Accidental Death policies that we purchased supplemented our SPJST whole life and term certificates.

For what I considered to be a very reasonable one-time premium of $158, each of us were covered by a $1 million life insurance policy for the duration of the trip — from the day we left home until the date we got back. That’s the entire time and not just the time we were in the air or in transit. Because of the nature of the product — accidental death insurance — it does not necessitate a medical examination.

In addition to offering the Accidental Death coverage, SPJST’s online “Travel Insurance Center” also offers Travel Medical coverage, which protects your health while traveling or living abroad; Trip Protection, which protects your travel investment in case of cancellation or delay; Annual Multi-Trip coverage, which provides coverage for all of your trips throughout the year; and Emergency Medical Evacuation coverage, which will pay for emergency transportation from a remote area to a high-quality hospital.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, if you are planning an international trip, you should consider getting travel insurance to cover yourself against accidents or illness while you’re abroad. Even if you already have

VĚSTNÍK medical insurance back home, it may not cover you when traveling outside the United States, or if it does cover you that coverage may not be enough. Whereas trip cancellation insurance covers your financial investment in your trip, such as flights, cruises, or train tickets, it might help ensure you are able to make a lastminute cancellation or change your itinerary in the event of an international outbreak, such as the 2017 outbreak of Zika virus in the Caribbean and Central America.

To access SPJST’s online “Travel Insurance Center,” go to spjst.org website and click on the “Benefits” tab. Once you get on the site, you can also speak to a live agent if you have any questions. I took advantage of the call line when making our purchase and was favorably impressed by the knowledge and courtesy of the agent on the other end of the line.

Fraternal Diplomacy: It’s What We Do! Earlier, I mentioned that we had been in the Czech Republic. It was a real learning experience in that I attended presentations hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs outlining what the country is doing to “brand” itself as Europe’s technology and innovation leader. Much of the conversation focused on “doing those things which will ensure that the business environment supports growth and innovation.” It’s a formula comprised of intelligent planning, effective communication, and broad collaboration.

So, I’m sitting there in Prague and I’m thinking that a lot of the methodology being discussed is applicable to SPJST. When the topic turned to “economic diplomacy” and what each citizen can do to help build the economy, it was a simple task for me to reconfigure the term as “fraternal diplomacy,” acknowledging that each member is tremendously important and can have a meaningful role in building and branding SPJST as a fraternal organization that can meet the needs of its members well into the future!

One of the projects that we’ve started working on in conjunction with the 2020 SPJST Convention is a series of short videos — fraternal testimonials — that will help to illustrate the important roles that motivated SPJST members and lodges are playing in their communities. It’s nothing new. Benevolent deeds carried out under the auspices of SPJST have been going on for 122 years. It’s inspiring and something that we should acknowledge and celebrate — from the devoted men, women, boys, and girls who routinely devote precious hours to lodge activities and events to the go-getters who

Every act of service — large or small — contributes to this grand idea of fraternalism that we seek to champion. It brings to mind the words of Helen Keller, “True happiness . . . is not attained through selfgratification, but through fidelity to a worthy purpose.”

Registered teams – or individuals – may begin work on their sand sculptures after 8 a.m. This year’s sand sculpture theme is “Dive In Deep with SPJST!” Let your imagination be your guide! Feel free to embellish your sculpture in any way; however, any materials brought to the beach must be removed after the contest. Please help keep our beach clean. Recognition for sculptures will be given in several categories.

At the end of the day, everyone goes home with memories of a great day at the Corpus Christi Beach filled with fun, sand, and sun.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood to host annual picnic this Sunday President Milton Peterson called the Lodge 6, Cottonwood meeting to order on Sunday, July 7, 2019. Brother Don Urbanovsky led the Pledge of Allegiance, and the youth led the SPJST motto. Sister Georgie Soukup reported 20 members present. The lodge honored all veterans present. Sister Barbara Hykel read the minutes from the last meeting. Sister Peggy Dobecka gave the treasurer’s and youth reports. Both progressive door prize winners were absent.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood invites all to 122nd annual picnic

Lodge 8, Weimar reports on May meeting

Supreme Lodge Officers and Directors, Members, Readers, and Friends, Everyone is invited to the 122nd annual picnic at Lodge 6, Cottonwood, 700 South Czech Hall Road in West on Sunday, July 21, 2019.

Fried chicken and sausage plates with trimmings will be served beginning at 11:30 a.m until ?. Large plate is $10, and small plate is $8. Plates-to-go will be available at the booth behind the hall for $10.

The youth will have a small prize drawing, and bingo - which kicks off at 12:30 p.m. A live auction gets started at 12:30 p.m. as well.

There will also be a big prize drawing with 23 items for some lucky winners.

For tickets, contact District Three Director John Engelke 254-799-4247 or Lodge 6 President Milton Peterson 254533-2372. Tickets may also be purchased at the picnic on Sunday. Prize drawings will be held after the live auction at 3 p.m. or later. Winners need not be present to win.

Lodge 8, Weimar met Monday, May 27, 2019, at 6 p.m. at Oakridge Smokehouse in Schulenburg, Texas. Members also enjoyed dinner, complimentary of Lodge 8, Weimar. Erline Janik led the Pledge of Allegiance. Anton Machacek led the prayer.

President Henrietta Veselka called the meeting to order. All officers were in attendance. District Six Director Karen Kaspar and District Six Regional General Agent Carolina Covarrubia were also in attendance.

Minutes of our February 25 meeting were in the April 24 Vestnik. Melvin Tobola made a motion, seconded by Earlene Lorfing, to accept the February minutes as presented. Motion carried.

Treasurer’s report was given by Carolyn Tobola. Anton Machacek made a motion, seconded by Marilyn Yates, to accept the treasurer’s report as presented.

Motion carried. Henrietta stated she wrote a check to Tammy Vincent, Parkview Manor, Weimar, Activity Fund for Join Hands Day. Correspondence was received from SPJST Chief Financial Officer Leonard Mikeska advising Lodge 8, Weimar that the death claim has been paid to the beneficiary of record for Sandra Sue Woytek, who passed away on March 19.

Lodge 8 is very proud of Anton Machacek who was chosen Fraternalist of the Year for District Six. District Six Spring Meeting, which was hosted by Lodge 23, Moravia on Sunday, March 24, was deemed a success.

Lodge 25, Ennis honors june birthdays Lodge 25, Ennis, monthly potluck supper and birthday celebration was held Wednesday, June 26, 2019. Lodge and social honorees in attendance were, pictured left to right, Marshall Allen, June Holland, and Rita Holland.

VĚSTNÍK Join Hands Day on Friday, May 3 at Parkview Manor in Weimar was attended by Rosie Shumbera, Arlene Marshall, Earlene Lorfing, Judy Silva, Becky Jares, Erline Janik, and Henrietta Veselka. District Six Family Fun Day was held on Sunday, May 19 at the rededication of SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad hall. It was held at Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange.

Carolyn Tobola led the memorial service in memory of Eugene Balusek, who passed away on Monday, January 22, 2018. Mr. Balusek’s obituary was read, followed by the 23rd Psalm and a prayer.

RGA Covarrubia reported she is working on getting new agents and bringing in new members. Director Kaspar reported there will be no fall meeting. She will be attending a pre-convention meeting with the Supreme Lodge in the middle of June. The 33rd SPJST Convention will be held in 2020. Director Kaspar also talked about the Velehrad School and Cemetery.

Al Marshall is on the sick list. Birthdays for March, April, and May were Melvin Tobola on March 9, R.E. Yates on March 14, and Karen Kaspar on March 26. An anniversary was celebrated by Joan and Anton Machacek 58 years on March 9.

Door prizes were won by Joan Machacek, Luther Lorfing, R.E. Yates, and Henrietta Veselka. Thank you, Karen, for the door prizes.

A motion was made, seconded, and carried to adjourn.

Next Meeting—August 26 The next meeting will be Monday, August 26 at 6 p.m. at Oakridge Smokehouse Restaurant in Schulenburg.

Lodge 18, Elgin . . .

June was a great month!

What a great month of June! Lost Cause Band played for our polka dance.

They are great. Why not? They are the former Central Texas Sound Band, well most of them. They have really great dancing music. We had a nice visit with the band members - what a good group of guys! We really did enjoy the dance.

Waldine Weiruscheske celebrated her 90th birthday. Waldine, you look great!

It was nice to visit with you and your family. Not to mention the fact that we had great music. Fritz Hodde and the fabulous Six band played. How great was that! Good food, good friends, and great music made for a good party.

Thank you for including us. Waldine came to our monthly meetings until she moved to Austin. We miss you. Stay healthy, and we hope to celebrate your 95th.

The minutes from the April meeting were read and approved. Five officers, 12 adult members, 14 youth members, and four guests were in attendance.

Treasurer Lisa Bubela reported on the financial standing of the lodge. A motion by Megan Riha, seconded by Karen Zapalac, was made to pay all outstanding bills. The motion carried.

FAC Patsy Baker reminded members of the May 19 rededication of Lodge 19, Velehrad hall at Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange, and the SPJST Car Show has been rescheduled for October 5.

Secretary Marjorie Treumer then shared the new insurance issued and the reinstated policies with the members.

Youth Leader Lisa Bubela informed members of the upcoming important dates for the summer. District Six outing will be on May 19 in La Grange for the rededication of the Velehrad hall. Teen camp will be the third week of June.

District Six Director Karen Kaspar reported on her recent activities. She said that she had been very busy with the preparation of the Velehrad reded-

ication and is very excited to see everyone there. She informed members that the district would be paying for any member attending to eat the catered meal at the event.

Being honored for 50 years of membership, and in attendance, were Marjorie Treumer, Diane Seaman, Charlene Smith, and Margaret Leopold. Honored for 50 years of membership, but unable to attend were Katherine Krpec, Patrick Kubala, Brenda Mendoza, Jennifer Miller, and Duane Treybig.

Under old business, there was more discussion on our next dinner for the members. Lots of things are going on this summer so we are having a hard time planning our get-together.

Under new business, we had an old air conditioner break down so Freddie Kubitza made a motion to buy a new unit. The motion was seconded by Donnie Pavelka, and the motion passed. We are looking forward for some really good cold air for our Mach/Dulak reunion coming up on Saturday, July 27.

I hope everyone enjoyed the Fourth of July holiday with good food and family time.

Lodge 66, Waco reports on June meeting The meeting of SPJST Lodge 66, Waco was called to order by President John Engelke at St. Paul’s Church on Monday, June 24, 2019, at 6 p.m. with all officers present.

There were eight members in attendance along with four guests - Joan Shelton, Hannah Galler, Fiona Galler, and Reid Galler.

The Pledge of Allegiance and motto were recited. Secretary Sister Dana McAdams read the minutes of the May 20 meeting, and they were approved as read.

Bookkeeper Sister Diana Engelke gave the bookkeeping report. FAC Sister Diana Engelke gave the fraternal report. She received the report from State Fraternal Director Frank Horak.

A $100 donation is being made to Waco Animal Humane Society for June.

Congratulations to John and Diana Engelke on their 45th wedding anniversary on June 22.

Door prize winner was Douglas Galler, and 100 percent winner was John Engelke.

Father-of-the-Year was Louie Veselka.

Lodge 79 Corpus Christi celebrates Father’s Day Lodge 79, Corpus Christi celebrated Father’s Day with a catered meal of fried chicken and sides on Sunday, June 16, 2019. The meeting was called to order by President Mark Rebecek who led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We had a moment of silence for deceased members Jo Ann Pavelka and John Mrazek. On the sick list was Dorothy McCoy. All officers were present except for Treasurer Larry Elzner. In attendance were 22 members and guests.

Secretary Virginia Rebecek read the May minutes, and they were approved.

Vice President/FAC Jerry Sijansky gave the April and May financial reports in the absence of Treasurer Larry Elzner.

They were approved.

Vice President/FAC Jerry Sijansky gave his report. He remembered deceased member John Mrazek and his invention. He also mentioned that he turns in his fraternal reports every six months.

Under new business, President Rebecek introduced new sales agent Rosalind Robinson. In attendance also was her mother, Marjorie Washington. Another new member Daniel Rodriguez attended our meeting. We welcome them to our meetings.

Judy Majek made a motion that our monthly donation go to Charlie’s Place, seconded by Vice President/FAC Jerry Sijansky. The motion was approved.

Youth Leader Marcia Rew gave the youth club report. The youth club had four members and guests in attendance.

The youth discussed canoe safety and painted pictures with paint. The youth made Father’s Day gifts for all the fathers who attended the meeting.

The Wall High School Baseball Team won the 2019 UIL 3A State Baseball Championship on Saturday, June 8, 2019. This was the first time a boys’ team from Wall High School won a team state championship in any sport. This win capped off a sensational season for the Wall Baseball Team. They had a record of 39-1 and were ranked No. 1 in the state for the majority of the season. They outscored their opponents 460-65.

The team was coached by Jason Schniers, Tyler Warren, and Alex Rodriguez. Two SPJST members played on this team. Hunter Teplicek is a member of Lodge 49, Rowena. He played left field and was named to the All District Team. Hunter will attend Texas A&M University in the fall. Jake Jansa is a member of Lodge 160, San Angelo. He played second base and pitcher. He was named to First Team All State by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association, All-West Texas Baseball Team, FCA All Stars Team, and All District. Lodge 92, Fort Worth to host August 3 Paprskar Memorial Tarok Tournament VIII The Paprskar Memorial Tarok Tournament VIII will be held Saturday, August 3, 2019, at SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth - National Hall, located at 3316 Roberts Cut Off in Fort Worth (Lake Worth), Texas.

The tournament begins with registration and snacks from 8 to 8:45 a.m. Play begins at 9 a.m. Six one-hour rounds will be played.

Trophies and cash will be awarded for the top four scores.

Johnny Grogg of Lodge 88, Houston attains Grand Age of 100 SPJST congratulates Johnny Grogg, member of Lodge 88, Houston, who celebrated his 100th birthday on January 13, 2019.

Johnny Grogg was born in Peru, Indiana, on the Wabash River. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1941 and became a radio operator. In World War II, Johnny was stationed in Belgium, France, where he helped locate and radio the enemy’s location.

He finished his duty in 1945 as a sergeant and received six medals for his service.

Johnny had previously met his wife Bonnie, who is now deceased,

The Tuesday, June 4, 2019, meeting was brought to order with recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a moment of silent prayer for all in need as well as all that continue to help and support our Nation.

All officers were present for the meeting. Guests Pat and Robert Sill and Rita Mardis were welcome. At this time, Pat Sill and Rita Mardis expressed a desire to transfer their membership from Lodge 183, Arlington to Lodge 180, Burleson.

Congratulations to Logan Almonte for being the first Lodge 180 youth to attend Leaders-in-Training (LIT) camp at Camp Kubena! All Lodge 180 members are so proud of Logan to have an opportunity like this.

Door prizes were a Chili’s gift card won by Joe Babina and an Olive Garden gift card won by Verna Mason. Pat Sill selected Fort Worth Humane Society for a monthly contribution, and Logan’s was selected for the dinner location for our July meeting.

Joe Hurtik enjoyed his birthday cake even though it was not a big kolache!

In Memory of Curtis Treat Curtis Lee Treat, 71, of Chilton, Texas, died Thursday, July 4, 2019, in Perry. Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m.

Monday, July 8 at Cook-GerngrossGreen-Patterson Funeral Home in Rosebud. Funeral service was at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 9 at First Baptist Church in Chilton with Reverend Andy Kilpatrick officiating. Burial Curtis Treat followed in Chilton Cemetery.

Mr. Treat was born April 26, 1948, in Slaton to James and Minnie Raines Treat. He lived in the Chilton area the past 50 years. He married Judy Kuropata on May 23, 1970 . He worked as a mechanic for Conners Crushed Stone and was a carpenter and woodworker.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Chilton.

Mr. Treat was a charter member of SPJST Lodge 182, Falls County and was an active member and officer. He was currently serving as vice president/fraternal activities coordinator.

He also participated in many SPJST state tournaments.

He was preceded in death by sons Patrick Treat, Andrew Treat, and Richard Treat; and brother Earnest Treat.

He is survived by wife Judy Treat of Chilton; son Matthew Treat and wife Glendia of Chilton; daughter Becky Beckendorf and husband Jason of Perry; brother Henry Treat of Lorena; sisters Treva Smith of Rosebud, Mary Downes of Lott, and Vallie Shull of Shirley, Arkansas; grandchildren Brianna Treat, Brittany Treat, Bridgett Treat, Matthew Treat, Jr., Bailee Beckendorf, Paetyn Beckendorf, and Tynlee Beckendorf; and great-grandchild Daegyn Treat.

In Memory of Rudolph Cepak Rudolph John Cepak, 78 of Jarrell, Texas, passed away Friday, May 31, 2019, in Temple. He was born on June 14, 1940, in Penelope, the son of Rudolph Joe Cepak and Lillian (Petter) Cepak.

Rudolph married Sharon (McFarlin) on January 7, 1967, in Ennis.

From 1960 to 1993, he was employed by Sears as a diesel mechanic from which he retired. During that time, Rudolph honorably served our country from Rudolph Cepak 1963 to 1965 in the United States Army. He was a parishioner at Holy Trinity Catholic Church where he was extremely active in the church. He was also a member of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis and KJT Catholic Organization of Texas. Rudolph enjoyed gardening and farming along with taking care of his friends and family to the highest extent possible.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include wife Sharon Cepak; son Robert Cepak; brothers and sisters Mary Ann Roznovsky, Lillian Divin, Irene Martinek, Frank Cepak, Lucille Mikula, Helen Cepak Rey, Harry Cepak, Jerry Cepak, Daniel Cepak, and Richard Cepak.

Funeral mass was at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 5 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church under the direction of The Gabriels Funeral Chapel and Crematory with Father Stephen Nesrstra officiating.

Burial follow at Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation was from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4 with a rosary from 7 to 8 p.m. at The Gabriels Funeral Chapel and Crematory.

Expression of Sympathy We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge 30, Taiton, on behalf of our officers and members wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of EDWIN JOHN ZAPALAC. Edwin John Zapalac, 76, of New Taiton, Texas, passed away on Saturday, April 27, 2019. Edwin was born on December 9, 1942, in Schulenburg to the late Selven and Clare Okhrulik Zapalac.

Ed was a United States Army Veteran. He was a farmer/rancher and groundskeeper for Ed Zapalac St. John Catholic Church.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 30, Taiton.

He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Karen Kahanek Zapalac; sister Agnes Berckenhoff of St. John; brothers Julius Zapalac and wife Edith of Muldoon, Herman Zapalac and wife Irene of Martin, Henry Zapalac and wife Betty of Schulenburg, and Mike Zapalac and wife Jennifer of Schulenburg; brothers-in-law Clarence Kahanek and wife Pam of Spring and Glenn “Chopper” Kahanek of New Taiton; daughters Joann Schimcek and husband Ronnie of Weimar and Melinda Castilleja and husband Vincent of Pflugerville; three granddaughters; one grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife Martha Zapalac; brotherin-law Albert Berckenhoff; infant niece Jean Zapalac; and father- and motherin-law Alvin and Joyce Kahanek.

Visitation was Wednesday, May 1 at Triska Funeral Home from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at St. John Catholic Church with a Knights of Columbus rosary following at 6:30 p.m.

Funeral service was held on Thursday, May 2 at St. John Catholic Church at 10 a.m. with Reverend Gabriel Oduro Tawiah officiating. Burial with military honors under the auspices of the American Legion Post 251 followed at St. John Cemetery.

In Memory of Jerry Donald Sebek Jerry Donald Sebek, 78, of San Marcos, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, June 25, 2019, in Victoria. He was born in Bell County to Jerry and Florine Sebek on May 8, 1941.

Jerry loved the Lord, his family, and his friends. As a young man, Jerry attended Ocker Brethren Church and Holland High School. Jerry was a four-year lettermen in football, basketJerry Sebek ball, baseball, and track. He received numerous accolades in each sport. His senior season, he was the football MVP of the district, on the Super Cen-Tex Team, and on the KCEN-TV Team.

During his high school tenure, Jerry excelled academically and was also an FFA president, class treasurer, vice president of his junior class, and class sweetheart/favorite.

Jerry married Elizabeth Miller on December 23, 1961. He graduated from Southern Methodist University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1963, where he played football for the Mustangs as a quarterback.

Jerry was an insurance salesman in San Marcos for more than 45 years.

He was an active member of First United Methodist Church where he was the Men’s Club president and worked with Vacation Bible School groups.

Jerry was also involved with the Jaycees, Masonic Lodge, Heritage Association, Meals on Wheels, and spearheaded the move of the San Marcos Softball Complex to its current location. Jerry was an avid softball player up until he was 50 years of age. He also coached tee-ball, little league, pony league, and softball for his children and other children in the community. Jerry

was a well-respected member of the community who would do anything for anyone.

Jerry was a member of SPJST Lodge 87, Temple.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; and loving wife Elizabeth.

He is survived by son DeWayne; daughter Cindy and husband James; daughter Kim; sister Kay and husband Doyle Knight; grandchildren Sadie and Connor McDonald; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation was held on Friday, June 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Pennington Funeral Home in San Marcos. Service began at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 29 at First United Methodist Church in San Marcos. A reception followed at the church.

Memorial donations may be made to the FUMC parking fund; Hays County Food Bank; or charity of your choice.

Arrangements were by Pennington Funeral Home in San Marcos.

In Memory of Albina Vrazel Albina Helen Vansa Vrazel, age 86, of Yarrellton, Texas, passed away Wednesday, June 26, 2019, in a Temple hospital. Funeral service was at 10 a.m.

Tuesday, July 2 at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Marak. Burial followed in Sts. Cyril and Methodius Cemetery. Rosary was recited at 7 p.m.

Monday, July 1 at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home.

Mrs. Vrazel was born March 29, 1933, in the Red Ranger community of Bell County to John and Annie (Macek) Vansa. She married Anton Vrazel on May 7, 1952. She was a homemaker, farmer, and rancher. She had worked in the kitchens of Cameron ISD for many years and had also worked in the Cameron Dress Factory.

She loved Albina Vrazel working in her flower garden, especially her rose bushes. She also grew enough vegetables to feed the entire community. She definitely had a green thumb.

The love of her life was her family!

She treasured her children, grandchildren, and most of all her husband of 67 years.

She was a member of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church where she had previously served in the Altar Society. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts and KJZT No. 21.

Albina was preceded in death by granddaughter Lisa Marie Wilde; and by siblings Tony Mitchell, Emil Vansa, Anton Vansa, and Mary Ann Vrazel.

She is survived by husband Anton Vrazel of Yarrellton; daughters Linda M. Vrazel Wilde and husband Daniel of Cyclone and Rose Marie Vrazel of Temple; brother Steve Vansa of Temple; and two grandchildren.

State Queen’s Notebook

On Independence Day, I was able to be a part of the Belton Fourth of July Parade and rode in a 1972 Breyer Blue Corvette. It was extremely enjoyable to be a part of, and I am very grateful to say I was a part of one of the 10 longest parades in America!

It was incredible to see the thousands of people (and pets!) who showed up to watch the parade.

One of my favorite parts was watching the young kids get excited to see us drive by. To say my duchess and I had a blast would be an understatement!

We are extremely grateful to have been a part of this parade and for everyone who helped with us being there.

In addition to the Fourth of July parade, on Sunday, July 7, I attended my last District Seven Youth Achievement Day (YAD) that I would participate in and was the mistress of ceremonies for the royalty competition. Although I had to pass down my duties as District Seven Queen, I know that District Seven will always be in my heart. My time helping out at YAD is not over, and I plan to continue to be involved. I also am extremely appreciative to have received the Youth Achievement Award and will continue to dedicate time and effort to SPJST. District Six Queen excited about State YAD I recently participated in District Six Youth Achievement Day (YAD) on Sunday, July 7, 2019, where I placed first in desserts (candy) and i n science/education categories.

I placed second in sewing and in constructive items. I also entered phot o g r a p h y, but did not place. Our senior group talent in which I also participated, placed first. I entered the royalty competition and was crowned District Six Queen. I had so much fun and enjoyed the day. I can’t wait to go to State YAD on Saturday, August 3.

Lodge 30, Taiton youth wins at District Six YAD Hi, Fellow SPJST Members!

District Six held its Youth Achievement Day (YAD) on Sunday, July 7, 2019, at Taiton Community Center. I participated in five craft categories and in group talent. I had fun making my crafts.

I won first place with three of my five crafts. I enjoyed our skit as well. Our skit placed first! I will be taking my three crafts and we will be performing our skit at State YAD in Temple on Saturday, August 3. I hope to see you all there!

Lodge 49, Rowena youth share summer activities Awesome Summer My summer has been awesome. In June, I went to this camp, and I met this guy, and now we are dating. I also did summer volleyball, and I’m also doing cheer. This summer, I am even getting braces. I’m so excited.

Lodge 107, Floresville youth visits Washington, D.C.

Dear Members, I am on the swim team for the Spring Branch Stingrays. It is a lot of fun. We had four swim meets, and I was elected to swim at Meet of Champions.

I swam on S a t u r d a y, June 29, 2019, in preliminaries and placed fifth out of 3 3 swimmers to make finals on Sunday, June 30. I cannot wait till swim season for the swim teams starts again.

In June, I traveled with students from Poth Junior High to Washington, D.C. and New York. It was an amazing trip, and I learned so much about our national monuments, the 911 memorial, the Holocaust Museum, and so many other great sites. I even got to attend a Broadway Show and ride the subway in New York.

Dear Members, I have been having a great summer. I have been on a swim team that included daily morning practice and four swim meets. I also attended camp at Camp Kubena with District Five and a couple of other districts and made new friends. It was so much fun, and I cannot wait to go again next year! We are also planning to go camping on the Frio River for family vacation before schools starts. I hope you all are having as much summer fun as I am!

2018 - 2019 Youth Club Member Update - Merit Points and Meeting Attendance Fourth Quarter Merit Points and Meeting Attendance The totals below in the column labeled “Pts” are merit points earned in the June 2018 to May 2019 youth year. This is total merit points for the 2018-2019 youth year thus far. Please see “What is the Merit Point System?” for complete information about the contest.

The number in the column labeled “Mtgs” is the number of meetings each youth club member has attended from June 2018 to May 2019. Please see “What is an Active Youth Member?” below to determine number of meetings needed to participate in youth activities.

What is the Merit Point System?

Youth club members earn merit points for participating in SPJST lodge, district, and state activities. At the end of the youth year, points are totaled and the youth with the highest points in the youth club receive cash awards.

Contest Dates June 1, 2018 to May 31, 2019 Merit Point Contest Age Divisions Junior—Entering Kindergarten to Age 12 Teen—Age 13 to High School Senior Rules The youth leader or assistant youth leader is responsible for keeping track of the merit points for each active member of the youth club. The points are to be sent to the State Fraternal Director on the Quarterly and Merit Point Reports each quarter. Youth club members are also encouraged to keep up with their points and turn them in to the youth leader on a quarterly basis. This system helps both the youth leader and the youth member keep better records of youth participation.

Current, official Quarterly and Merit Point Reports, available from the State Fraternal Director may only be used in the Merit Point Contest.

The Quarterly and Merit Point Reports sent to the State Fraternal Director by the youth leader will be kept on file for at least six months following the conclusion of the contest.

Merit points are earned for only those activities listed under Youth Point Values.

An activity can only earn points in one category on the point sheet.

When in doubt about any activity earning points, contact the State Fraternal Director prior to the contest conclusion.

Everyone will be subject to the same rules in every contest. Failure to comply with any rule shall mean immediate withdrawal.

Merit Point Awards First through fifth place awards are presented in the junior and teen divisions of each youth club. The amount of points that top winners receive in both divisions will determine where the point rankings of the first through fifth winning categories begin. First place winners will be those equal to and 20 points below the top place winner in their age division. Second Place will be 21 to 40 points below the top winner in their age division. Third place will be 41 to 60 points below the top winner in their age division. Fourth place will be 61 to 80 points below the top winner in their age division. Fifth place will be 81 to 100 points below the top winner in their age division.

Awards are presented on the lodge, district, and state levels in the junior and teen merit point contests. At each District YAD, the Home Office presents first through fifth place awards to qualifying junior and teen youth club members. The junior and teen with the most points in each district also receive recognition. In the event of a tie, all who tied for first place will receive the award.

A youngster with a current SPJST insurance certificate may enter the youth program the youth year that he/she will be entering kindergarten.

To be considered active, youth club member must attend a majority (seven) of the monthly meetings during the year. The youth must attend the

majority of these meetings at his/her home youth club. In those instances where a lodge does not have a youth club, the youngster may attend adult lodge meetings or the meetings of another youth club. The youngster will be eligible for camp and Youth Achievement Day (YAD) after the completion of his/her kindergarten year. Active youth members must be single and not be pregnant or a parent.

The age of the youth on June 1 of the current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.).

The youth year begins June 1 and ends May 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school.

Chvilkou ticha jsme uctili památku zemřelých členů. Vicepresident Willis vedl naši schůzi proto, že manželé Kalužovi byli přítomni basebalové hře

finanční zprávu. Při této slavnostní příležitosti vicepresident Willis předal odznaky padeátiletého členství Beaulah Zahirniak a Mnsg. Melvin Dorňákovi. V tomto pbdobí oslavila narozeniny Mary Lou Mynář. Příští schůze bude po Westfestu dne 13. září 2019. Těšíme se na hojnou účast všech našich členů.

Blinn College to offer Czech course CESAT (Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas) is pleased to announce that Blinn College will offer Czech courses beginning Fall 2019 for academic credit.

CZEC 1471 (Beginning Czech) will be offered via synchronous online instruction. Students can participate in the class from anywhere. They will need a computer with high-speed internet connection and a headset. The class will meet online from 7:45 a.m. until 8:50 a.m. Monday through Thursday.

The Czech courses will count for the foreign language requirement at most universities.

To register for the course, dual credit students must notify their high school counselors. The counselors must contact Shannon Williford, Director of Dual Credit Program, at Blinn College to enroll students.

TCGS to present “Missing: Our Elusive Family Members MIAs, Orphans, Adoptions” this Saturday in Caldwell Our July 20, 2019, TCGS seminar, “Missing: Our Elusive Family MembersMIA’s, Orphans, and Adoptions,” will focus on finding ancestors who are often difficult to find.
