he 14th Annual SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration is coming up on Saturday, May 4 and will be held at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall, which is seven miles east of Temple. It will be big day full of cars, vendor booths, kids’ activities, Czech heritage demonstrations, music, food, games, and lots more.

Please save the date, and make plans to spend Saturday, May 4 in Seaton! This event benefits the SPJST Foundation which supports the Czech Heritage Museum and Camp Kubena.

Wands for Wildlife® Old mascara wands now have a purpose! These little wands are able to be upcycled to clean away oil, larvae, fly eggs, mites, infections, mud, and other contaminants from wildlife animals. They work great because the bristles are close together. They are used for medical care and wound treatment, too!

Gather your old mascara wands.

(The organization asks that you please not purchase new wands as the program is for recycling old wands.)

Wash wands in warm, soapy water to remove residual mascara. Place wands

in a zip-lock bag and mail them to a wildlife refuge that is accepting donations, such as: Appalachian Wildlife Refuge PO Box 1211 Skyland, NC 28776 A form that is found at www.appalachianwild.org should also be included with the wands. Please check postage and packaging requirements at your local post office. The organization says that many packages are arriving with postage due.

Camp Kubena Assistant Director

SPJST seeks a qualified individual to become assistant director for Camp Kubena, located at 2001 Waldeck Road, Ledbetter, Texas. This is a full-time exempt position with various time schedules.

Member Referral Incentive All referral cards received during a given month go into a drawing for three $25 Walmart gift cards.

Position Purpose To further the mission of Camp Kubena through the planning and delivery of program activities and events. Design and deliver program activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate. Assist in the management of the overall camp operation at the direction of the executive director.

Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree in a related field with recreation/camp experience, or five years of administrative experience in a recreation/camp field.

• Experience in the development and delivery of programs and activities for similar population.

• Current certification in first aid and CPR. • Preferred certifications: Life Guard Instructor, High/Low Ropes Certification (or ability to obtain) • Mac and Microsoft word processing programs as well as presentation programs.

SPJST Insurance Department welcomed 26 sales agents to the Home Office in Temple for a two-day Insurance 101 class on Tuesday, March 5

Francis Fabianke of Lodge 35, Elk; Mary Dunn win SPJST State Straight Domino Tournament On Saturday, March 2, 2019, a total of 38 players turned out for the SPJST State Straight Domino Tournament at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. This was an increase of players over last year.

Of the 38 players who participated in the 10-round tournament, 20 were members and 18 were prospective members.

Players drove into Temple as far away as Snook, Elk, and Ennis. Players enjoyed snacking on kolaches and doughnuts during the day and smothered pork, mashed potatoes, and green beans from Oscar Store for lunch.

At the end of the tournament, door prizes were drawn while results were being tabulated.

Ennis received a special prize. They each received a box of Lucky Charms cereal and a Texas lottery scratch-off ticket.

Tournament Winners First through fourth place winners received a plaque and money. District Two Spring Meeting Sunday, March 17, 2019 at Lodge 48, Beyersville The District Two Spring Meeting will be Sunday, March 17, 2019, at Lodge 48, Beyersville, located at 10450 FM 619 in Taylor.

Directions: From Taylor, take the South Loop. Turn right on FM 112 and go about 0.8 mile. Turn right on FM 619; continue on FM 619 for approximately 4 miles. Hall is on the right.

Registration will start at 1 p.m., and the meeting will begin at 2 p.m. We are planning a very good meeting. This is election of officers of the district, and if anyone would like to fill one of these positions, please feel free to let us know.

We are asking all youth and adults to decorate a rock. You may use your own imagination in your decorating. I know some of you can come up with a great idea. We will have prizes for first, second, and third place winners. So come on, everyone, let’s have a bunch of you enter your decorated rock.

District Two Youth Counselor Patsy is planning a silent auction for the youth club and asking that we bring an item for this auction. Please, let’s help the youth raise a little money.

Lodge 48 is planning a great meal for the meeting. The meal will consist of brisket, sausage, and all the fixings. The district will furnish the dessert. All of this will cost you only $3.

Where else can you get a great plate of food for just $3!

Lodge 4, Hallettsville members enjoy lunch, games at February meeting Dear Members, SPJST Lodge 4, Hallettsville met on Sunday, February 11, 2019, at Hallettsville Chamber of Commerce meeting room at 3 p.m.

Vice President Annie Vahalik called the meeting to order followed by the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States and Texas flags. Welcomed to the meeting was District Six Director Karen Kaspar.

Secretary-Treasurer Helen Zabransky read the minutes to the last meeting and gave the financial report. Correspondence was read.

A list of our lodge’s 50-year and 75year members for 2019 was read. It was

voted to have the Home Office mail their pins to them. They will be recognized at our Family Day as usual.

FAC Annie reported on upcoming SPJST activities. She also mentioned that she and her husband Philip, accompanied by Vlasta Bartos and Mary Ann Cerny of Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje, attended the SPJST Progressive 42 Domino Tournament in Temple. They were joined at the tournament by La Verne Townsend. Everyone had a good time playing, visiting with everyone, and enjoying the delicious food. Annie told the members there would be bingo after the meeting with all prizes being the color red. She then gave out Hershey’s candy bars remembering F.K. “Papa” Bucek who would hand them out in February, which was his birthday month.

District Six Cemetery representative Philip Vahalik of Lodge 4 reported on their meeting held January 27.

District Six Director Kaspar spoke to the members and answered questions.

She reported on upcoming activities and reminded members of the District Six Spring Meeting on March 24 in Moravia. Our lodge always enjoys Karen’s visit.

Door prize winners were Gayenell Chudej, Alton Chudej, and Patsy Zabransky.

The meeting adjourned. Lunch was served then everyone enjoyed playing bingo. Many thanks to FAC Annie for getting the prizes and calling the numbers.

You’re invited to the SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood Easter party on Sunday April 7, 2019, at the lodge hall, located at 700 South Czech Hall Road in West, Texas.

Beginning at 2 p.m. is the Lodge 6 meeting. The presentation of 50-year pins follow. The annual meeting of SPJST Lodge 6, Inc. will also be held.

The Dujka Brothers did a fantastic job for the Valentine dance on Sunday, February 10, 2019. All who attended had a great time. It was nice to see Harry and Connie Schielack celebrating their 40th anniversary. Thank you for bringing your party to Lodge 18, Elgin hall.

It was great to see so many at the celebration. Your group seemed to have a great time, and we hope to see all again.

A valentine dance and anniversary celebration - what a great combination!

Johnny and I celebrated our 60th anniversary in January. Our family surprised us by inviting some of our friends and family to join us. We had a smaller group - only about 40 guests; the Schielack group had about 100. We love to see families come to our dances and celebrate a happy occasion.

We are happy that Charles Wilson is recovering from his back surgery. We miss you, Charles. Get well quick.

Jonathan Vahalik

Jonathan Joseph Vahalik graduated from the University of Houston-Victoria at its Merell Center in Katy on December 15, 2018. He received a bachelor of business administration degree.

Attending were his parents Annie and Philip Vahalik, aunts Patsy Zabransky and Patricia Vahalik, and special friend Jordyn Evans.

A graduation party honoring Jonathan was held January 21, 2019, at Vera Cruz Mexican Restaurant in Victoria. He is currently working at The Tackle Box in Victoria.

Jonathan is a member of Lodge 4, Hallettsville. Congratulations!

Lodge 24, Cyclone offers famous burgers at Squeezebox dance It seems as though the wheat now has enough ventilation to aid a large harvest.

Flag Hall’s famous hamburgers will be available on Saturday, March 16.

They alone are worth the price of admission.

Lodge 24, Cyclone hosts Squeezebox Band this Saturday Lodge 24, Cyclone - Flag Hall will again host Ted Lange and Mollie B (Busta) and the Squeezebox Band on her Texas Spring Tour.

The date is this Saturday, March 16, and doors will open at 4 p.m. with the kitchen serving those delicious pit

grilled, super-sized hamburgers with all the trimmings. Daniel is already making his shopping list and getting the pit cleaned so that everyone can get a wonderful aroma when they get out of their cars in the parking lot.

We will also be serving a platter of Green’s Sausage House sausage and sauerkraut. I think Lodge 24 Secretary Margaret Mikeska and her husband Wilbert will be making some of the best kraut in the area so I know that will be a great meal.

The bar will also open at 4 p.m. serving your favorite beverages. Our bar and hall chairperson Brenda Maddux has almost every flavor you could ask for, and she keeps them good and cold and always serves your order with a smile that

Dancing will be from 6 to 10 p.m., and I know Ted and Mollie, and the band will play your favorite toe-tapping polkas and waltzes as well as many other tunes. They are so talented to be able to play all those instruments and a wide variety of styles of music.

We are proud to have Stan and Betty Nemec join us at this dance. I hope all of you got to see Clint Eastwood’s production movie The Mule. Betty got to dance with Clint Eastwood as the Squeezebox Band played in the movie, and I know Betty would be happy to share her stories about attending the movie’s premier opening with all of you.

We are also proud to say that almost all of the tables are reserved, but we do have a few chairs left. If you plan to attend this dance, please call me at 254985-2258 so that I can make your reservation. It’s $15 per person. If any seats are left, we will sell tickets at the door for $20 per person.

This year, we will be decorating the hall “Spring Mardi Gras Style” so wear your Czech kroj or your brightest colors, and be ready to join the party and have a great time at Lodge 24 with your friends!

We are now meeting every other month instead of quarterly. The months are January, March, May, July, September, and November. This will give us more opportunities to keep up with things and take care of business quicker.

Lodge 35, Elk appreciates hall workers President Randy Pavelka called the SPJST Lodge 35, Elk and Elk Hall, Inc. meetings to order on Wednesday, February 20, 2019, at 7:11 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by officers, members, and guests. We had 13 members and one guest present.

A moment of silence was held in honor of member Erwin Dieterich who passed away on Wednesday, January 23.

All SPJST members send their condolences to the family on the passing of this longtime member. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time in your lives.

Secretary Carla Price read her January meeting reports, and with no corrections, they were approved as read.

Treasurer Barbara Pavelka gave her January meeting reports which were also approved as read. Floor Chairman Gene Pavelka reported a great month for the hall, and Bar Chairman Randy Pavelka reported a great month, too.

Thank you to all who help to keep our hall up and running every Saturday night. Without these members, we wouldn’t have such a great place to have our social events. Congratulations!

A motion was made by Tammy Pavelka to make a donation of $200 to Jerry (Bud) and Barbara Pavelka. The motion was seconded by Billy Kubitza.

The motion carried. The Pavelkas lost their home due to a tragic fire before Christmas last year.

Lodge 39, Bryan members sing at nursing home Dear Readers, Lodge 39, Bryan went to sing at the Lampstand Nursing Home on Friday, December 7, 2018. Afterwards, we all returned to the lodge hall for our meeting and Christmas party. We had pizza and a white elephant gift exchange.

The next meeting will be Sunday, March 10, 2019.

Lodge 79 Corpus Christi members celebrate Valentine’s Day SPJST Lodge 79, Corpus Christi celebrated a belated Valentine’s Day on Sunday, February 17, 2019. Member Laura Rebecek decorated the tables beautifully with a valentine theme. For our meal, the lodge furnished barbecue

brisket and sausage, and members provided side dishes.

The meeting was called to order at 2:05 p.m. by President Mark Rebecek.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

On the sick list was Vivian Resendez, Jr. who will undergo x-rays.

All officers were present, and we had 29 members and guests in attendance.

Secretary Virginia Rebecek read the January meeting minutes, and Treasurer Larry Elzner gave the January financial report. Both were approved.

Under communications, Secretary Virginia Rebecek read a letter from District Seven Secretary Wendy Pruski about the District Seven Spring Meeting to be held in Floresville on Sunday, March 10.

The fraternal report was given by Vice President/FAC Jerry Sijansky. He asked all to turn in their fraternal acts, and he discussed the District Seven Spring Meeting.

There was no unfinished business.

Under new business, President Rebecek stated our April meeting will fall on Easter Sunday. Members voted to have the meeting on Sunday, April 28. It will

The youth club report was presented

by Youth Leader Marcia Rew. They had seven members and guests in attendance. The youth discussed the dangers of poison ivy and rules and regulations at meetings.

Birthdays for February were Lela Mae Hayek on the 1st, Annie Urbanovsky on the 4th, Dorothy McCoy on the 8th, and Christina Rew on the 16th. “Happy Birthday” was sung to these members.

Wedding anniversary couple for February was Lydia and Victor Bridges - 61 years on February 15. Happy anniversary, Lydia and Victor!

Twenty-five dollar door prizes were won by Larry Elzner and Judy Majek. We had a $100 special drawing, and it was won by Sales Agent Adela Resendez.

Christina Rew made a motion to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Judy Majek, at 2:50 p.m.

Under new business, the announcement was made of the upcoming Join Hands Day on Friday, May 3 at Hospice of South Texas. Be sure to mark your calendars.

Donna Vanek then presented Dorothy Schovajsa with a 75-year pin. We want to thank her daughter-in-law Karen Schovajsa for bring her to the meeting.

Dorothy still drives, but not at night.

Dorothy said her parents bought the policy for her in 1944 when she was 16 years old.

Donna read some fun facts about 1944. A loaf of bread was 10 cents, and gas was 15 cents per gallon. Average wage was $2.400 per year.

Lodge 180, Burleson plans nursing home visit Lodge 180, Burleson met Tuesday, March 5, 2019, for its monthly meeting at the Burleson Police Department Community Room. It is a privilege to be able to utilize this facility. Chief Billy Cordell stopped by as we were preparing to have our meeting. We enjoyed his brief visit.

The meeting was brought to order by President Nancy Kelly, and the Pledge of Allegiance followed. At the conclusion of the pledge, a moment of silent prayer was offered by all. The silent prayer included prayers for all in need as well as many loved ones that had endured heartaches and grief during the

It was so good to be able to attend this meeting and see our fellow Lodge 180 members. Due to personal health issues and health issues related to my husband, I had missed the two preceding meetings. Now I know what it is like for a newborn when that lifeline has been cut. It is so important and good to maintain continuity with each other in this day and age.

All officers were present for the meeting with the exception of Secretary Carmon Babina, who was under the

weather. All current active members were present with the exception of Verna Mason, Sandy Almonte, and son Logan as well as Liana Scott.

by Treasurer Rhonda Hurtik. They were approved as read. No financial report was given as no resources had been utilized.

A brief discussion took place regarding our visit to Burleson Nursing Home.

Lodge 187 Round Rock members remember Gladys Nelson

Lodge 185 New Braunfels members to join hands for children in local hospitals Members of Lodge 185, New Braunfels, met on Sunday, February 24, 2019, at the local American Legion Hall. The meeting was called to order by President Donnie Howard. Topics discussed were the District Seven Spring Meeting on Sunday, March 10 in Floresville, the youth report and their district workshop and outing on March 2 at Fischer Park in New Braunfels, and the Join Hands Day project on May 4. Members voted to participate with the youth club to fill and deliver goodie bags to children having to stay long term in pediatric units at various local hospitals.

Special guest District Seven Director Bob Bayer was present and informed the lodge of several upcoming plans for Camp Kubena and the Home Office.

We started the February meeting with a moment of silence for Gladys Nelson who passed on February 1, 2019.

I personally would be honored to say to Mrs. Nelson, thank you for your warm smiles, your encouragement, and your words of wisdom. It was a pleasure and a blessing to have known you.

We discussed and voted on our Join Hands Day project. We will gather with the Star Ranch community and rally together to help The Refuge For DMST. Linda Johnson read all upcoming events.

Carla Krenek handled all the entertainment by doing an awesome Valentine’s Day history. Wow! I had no idea what a great history lesson. She even gave the amount of items bought just here in the states now. I wish more people were here to hear Mrs. Krenek’s presentation. She then ended it with handing out a bag of UTZ X’s and O’s shaped pretzels to all. Thanks bunches!

You are awesome.

Tom and Rose Etheredge celebrated their 35th anniversary on the 4th.

Birthdays this month go to Alexandria Johnson who had her “Sweet 16” on the 5th. Happy birthdays also go out to Donna Johnson, Bart Martinec, Billy Rule, Bradley Noles, Crimson Holland, Donald Leschber, James Nales, Melvin Schulz, and Nicole Scott.

Dance Lessons SPJST Lodge 191 and The Lufkin Dance Club are working on giving dance lessons in April at the lodge hall. When everything has been decided and worked out, we will send out another notice of the time and day they will be given.

Please be in prayer for the families of Lois St. John and Don and Geneva Sessum. Lois lost her daughter who lived in Arkansas, and Geneva lost a son. Losing a child has to be one of the worse things a parent can face.

Ruth Welch and Jewel Nolan are recovering quite well after their surgeries.

You can’t keep good women down.

Lodge 191, Lufkin: fun, food, and dancing Glenn and his crew of players did a fine job of entertaining the crowd at the SPJST Lodge 191, Lufkin Friday night dance in February. The other members of his band are David Franklin on steel guitar, and Chris Powell on drums.

Lodge 202 Jourdanton recognizes 75-year member Lodge 202, Jourdanton met Sunday, March 3, 2019, at Jourdanton Community Center. Flag Bearer Jeanna Fair led the pledges to the United States and the Texas flags. Silence was observed for deceased members and in honor of the armed forces.

President James House welcomed everyone.

Secretary Bettie House read the minutes that were approved as read.

Treasurer Sandra Hoggard presented the financial report.

Madison and Kenzie Lutz and Kelly House sent information concerning the Atascosa County Livestock Show. Safer Path (formally Family Crisis Center) was thankful for the monetary donation.

Vice President Sharon LaGrange stated the 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive ends March 31, and she mentioned the state tournaments.

Wednesday, March 13, 2019 Youth Leader Regina House reported the youth painted rocks at the last meeting and will enter them at the district spring meeting. For Join Hands Day, the youth will assist Atascosa County Animal Shelter with the caring of the animals. On May 11, the lodge outing will be at Urban Air Trampoline Park.

An SPJST pin was presented to 75year member Edith Chesshir. Sharon LaGrange read interesting information from 50 and 75 years ago.

Door prize winners were Bettie House, Sharon LaGrange, Mary Ann Barta, and Lloyd House.

The meeting adjourned.

TABA Home & Garden SPJST Car Show Friday, February 22 to Sunday, February 24, 2019 • Bell County Expo Center, Belton, Texas SPJST partnered with Temple Area Builders Association (TABA) to host a car show at the 2019 Home and Garden Show held Friday, February 22 to Sunday, February 24, 2019, at the Bell County Expo Center in Belton. The car show attracted 42 entries that were displayed along red carpets inside the Exposition Building.

An estimated 5,000 people attended the three-day event on Friday evening from 6 to 9 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday

from 12 to 4 p.m. Ballots were handed to spectators who were asked to vote for their three favorite vehicles. The votes were tallied, and 15 “People’s Choice” trophies were awarded on Sunday afternoon. Photos of winners and vehicles appear below and on the following pages. Additional awards were presented for best engine, best graphics, best interior, best paint, and driver’s choice. Photos of the vehicles were posted on SPJST’s Facebook page, and a special

award was presented to the vehicle with the most likes, comments, and shares. Results and additional photos from the weekend event appear on SPJST’s Facebook page.

Attendees to the car show also visited an SPJST display that featured life insurance products and youth and fraternal programs.

Participation money will be given along with ribbons and monetary prizes for first, second, and third place in each age category. First place winners from each district will have their rock displayed at the Home Office for members and visitors to enjoy.

We will once again have a silent auction. This year’s proceeds will go towards the $5 cost of each youth’s and chaperone’s camp form being completed online. This fee does add up, and the silent auction proceeds help tremendously. Each youth club is asked to donate an item. We appreciate members and friends who bring items for the silent

District Two youth gather for annual workshop, skating party Dear Members, The District Two Youth Development Workshop was held on Sunday, February 17, 2019, at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. Forty-one youth members along with several adults from Granger, Cyclone, Seaton, Beyersville, and Falls County attended the workshop. The most favorite activities were SPJST Bingo and making keychains. Thank you, District One Youth Counselor Sharon Russell, for the use of the SPJST Bingo. It was an awesome learning experience about all aspects of the SPJST Handbook. Top prize winner for the most answered ques-

tions was Tyson Bilbrey of Seaton. Congratulations, Tyson, and all others who knew the answers. And, way to go, bingo winners! Youth used pennies to keep tab on their bingo cards. They were excited to keep pennies they used along with all the other prizes given out.

We were excited to have talented friend Nancy Wilkins join us again this year sharing her crafty talents. Youth enjoyed making keychains out of corks, fabric, and rope.

Games were played. Pizza, cookies, and drinks were served prior to heading out to the skating party.

A very special thank you to all the youth who attended. It was a good time and a great learning experience. The time just seemed to go by too quickly. Thank you to State Fraternal Director Frank Horak, youth leaders, and parents who helped during the day. You are very much

appreciated!

And, on to the skating party . . .

The skating party, as always, was a great time for all. The attendance was awesome! More than 100 youth members, friends, and adults were present.

There were many new friends with the hopes of a couple becoming new youth club members. Everyone enjoyed skating, visiting, and meeting new friends.

We thank Wheels Family Fun Center for always giving us such a warm welcome and enjoying our company.

Thank you all for a great District Two Youth Day !

Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth, Adults Deliver Lots of Love to Nursing Home Residents

On February 14, 2019, Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club along with members of the adult lodge and CSA delivered 150 goodie bags with raisins, bananas, and homemade valentine cards to the residents of St. Joseph Manor and Copperas Hollow Nursing Homes in Caldwell, Texas. The residents enjoyed their valentine treats and especially loved seeing and visiting with the youth members.

Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club member Jade Caffey presents a framed painting of a tree to Barbara Linney-Gonzales in honor of her retirement as Lodge 88 Youth Leader. The tree has leaves made from thumbprints of all the 2018 Lodge 88, Houston members and is signed by the youth.

Decorated Rock Contest What is it?

The Decorated Rock Contest is sponsored by SPJST to encourage youth members to be creative and express their artistic talents. The contest is held at the district spring meeting. Youth must be present to enter and win.

Please check with your youth leader, District Youth Counselor, or the Vestnik for your district’s 2019 spring meeting date, location, and contest registration time.

Who Can Enter?

SPJST members entering kindergarten or age 5 to high school senior. The age group will be determined by the age of the current youth year.

In Memoriam In Memory of Erwin Dieterich

Resolution of Sympathy

The officers and members of Lodge 35, Elk, Texas would like express their heartfelt sympathies to the Dieterich family on the loss of their loved one, ERWIN HENRY DIETERICH. Erwin, age 82, passed away on Wednesday, January 23, 2019.

Memorial service was held at 1 p.m.

Saturday, January 26 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bellmead with Pastor Larry Krueger officiating.

Visitation followed the service in the family center until 3 p.m.

Erwin was born September 16, 1936, Erwin Dieterich in Riesel to Walter Christian and Frieda Louise (Boeche) Dieterich. He attended Trinity Lutheran School in Riesel and was a 1955 graduate of Riesel High School. He served in the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1959.

Erwin married Peggy Vicha in October 1962. He worked several jobs in the Waco area and retired from L-3 Communications in 2012 after 24 years of service. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church for more than 50 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Wesley Dieterich, Louis H. Dieterich, and Charles H. Dieterich; and sister Darlene Dieterich Evans.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Peggy Dieterich; daughter Sondra Shaeffer; granddaughter Erin Shaeffer; sisters Deanna Hooper of Houston and Delores Martin of Waco; brother Gene Dieterich and wife Sallie of Rowlett; sisters-in-law Arlene Dieterich of Waco, Janie Lehrmann and Jerome of Axtell, and Diana Kuehl Kubitza and Fred of Elk; brother-in-law Jerry Vicha and Leslie of Axtell; several nieces and nephews; and wonderful friend Debbie Camire.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1301 Hogan Lane, Waco, Texas 76705.

We, the members of SPJST Karel Jonas, Lodge 28, East Bernard, wish to express our deepest and sincerest sympathy to the family of our departed brother, JERRY JOE KOLAFA, SR. Jerry Joe Kolafa, Sr., age 83, was born in Wallis, Texas, on February 7, 1935, to Jake and Mary Kolafa. He died in Missouri City on Sunday, October 14, 2018.

Funeral service was at Guardian Angel Catholic Church on Tuesday, October 18 at 11 a.m.

Visitation was at Knesek and Sons Fu- Jerry Kolafa, Sr. neral Home on Wednesday, October 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. Graveside service was at Guardian Angel Catholic Cemetary at 12 p.m.

He graduated from Wallis High School in 1954. Jerry married Elaine Fullerton on September 27, 1958. He served two years in the United States Army and was stationed in Stuttgart, Germany. He worked 30 years for Tesco in Houston and Bellville Tube in Sealy prior to retirement.

Jerry was a member of SPJST Lodge 28, East Bernard. He was also a proud member of American Legion and was a Knights of Columbus 3rd Degree Knight.

He leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Judy; daughters Debbie and husband Tony Ashton, and Terry Adams; son Joey and Marlene Kolafa; grandchildren Tabatha and husband Aaron Ault, Brad and wife Heather Ashton, Dustin Petrosky, Chrissy and husband Jason Bibb, Kimberly Adams, Kristen and husband Justin Wagnone, Austin Kolafa, and Matthew Adams; great-grandchildren Brodie and Ashlynn Ault, Sadie Bibb, and Emma Wagnone; sisters Lillian Kolafa, Maryann and husband Ernie Hudgens, and Rosalie Miculek; brother Victor and wife JoAnn Kolafa; sisters-inlaw Sandra and husband Gary Caneness and Donna and husband Don Toellner; and brother-in-law Bob and wife Sue Fullerton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Aileen Drozd; brothers Lidge and Eddie Kolafa; and in-laws Bill and Lea Fullerton.

In Memory of Royella Roessler Mass of Christian burial for Royella Roessler, 71, of Temple, Texas, was held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2019, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Cyclone with Father Darrel Kostiha officiating. Burial was at St. Mary Cemetery at Westphalia.

Mrs. Roessler died Friday, March 1 in an Austin HospiRoyella Roessler tal.

Mrs. Roessler was born September 18, 1947, in Del Rio to Roy Alston and Ella Fritz Alston. She graduated from Rock Springs High School. She moved to Temple in 1970.

She married Maxie Henry Roessler on June 15, 1974. She worked as a switchboard operator for Southwestern Bell

and AT&T. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church; the Altar Society at St. Joseph; and SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton.

Survivors include her husband Maxie Henry Roessler of Temple; son Jason Henry Roessler and wife Amanda of Salado; daughter Becky Zavodny and husband Elden of Seaton; sister Gloria Vernor of Camp Wood; grandchildren Christopher Zavodny, Julia Zavodny, Camden Herrmann, and Kaylee Herrmann.

Visitation was Tuesday, March 5 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. with rosary being recited at 7 p.m. at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home in Temple.

Czech Newspaper Museum to open in La Grange Saturday, March 16 Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange will hold a grand opening dedication of the Czech Newspaper Museum-České Noviny Muzeum on Saturday, March 16, 2019, at 2 p.m.

The new museum is a replica of an early print shop and will tell the story of the many early Czech newspapers printed across Texas. Also included in the museum is a printing press, gas engine, and related equipment used to print those newspapers.

A significant part of the history of the settlement of Czechs in Texas is the story of their newspapers. Their desire to communicate and stay abreast of the news resulted in the founding of newspapers in their communities and in their Czech language. Some lasted only a few years, but others continued and eventually became newsletters or journals written in the English language. Some of the newspapers featured in the museum are listed below: Texan and Slovan The Texan, the first Czech-language newspaper in Texas, was first published in 1879 in La Grange. The weekly Texan, renamed Slovan, continued to be published in La Grange until 1885 when the press was moved to Bryan in 1886.

Svoboda/Věstnik Svoboda (Liberty) was established in 1885 in La Grange. In 1941, a paper called Svoboda began publication as a supplement to the El Campo Leader News. In September 1897, the Svoboda printed the SPJST Slovanska Jednota.

After the 1912 SPJST Convention, the Věstník began publication with Volume 1, Number 5, in Hallettsville. It was later printed in the Svoboda print shop in La Grange. The Věstník was also published in Fayetteville from 1916 to 1932.

Obzor Hospodařský The Obzor (Review), a Catholic newspaper, was established in 1891 and published in Hallettsville, printed in the Sacred Heart Rectory. Later the Obzor had an insert entitled Naše Ženy (Our Women).

Nový Domov In 1894, Frank Jakubik purchased the press that the Obzor was being printed on. After the purchase of the press, Jakubik founded the Nový Domov (New Home) in Hallettsville. Under the efforts of Reverend Karel Beneš, Jakubik continued to print the Obzor along with the Nový Domov.

Hospodář The Hospodář (Land Steward) was published for over 100 years. It began in 1890 in Omaha, Nebraska. In 1974, it was sold to the West News Publishing Company. In West, Jan Vaculik joined Jerome Kopecky and worked with him for 15 years until May 1989 when Jan Vaculik purchased the paper. The paper is no longer published.

Našinec The Našinec (Fellow Countrymen) was first published in Hallettsville in 1914. The Našinec was printed in Granger until June 2018 as the last paper published entirely in Czech in Texas.

Rolník The Rolník (Farmer), is the newspaper of RVOS. It began as an insert, Rolník Texasky, in the Slovan in 1886. The Rolník continues to be the publication of RVOS today.

Bratrské Listy The Bratrské Listy (Brethren Journal) was first published in Brenham in 1902 and became the official organ of the Evangelical Unity of Brethren in North America. It was later moved to Temple, then to Austin where it is still published, although in the English language.

KJZT News The Nový Domov, which was published in Hallettsville, Lavaca County, Texas, served as the official Czech publication for the Catholic Women’s Fraternal of Texas (KJZT). The organization continues to publish the KJZT News.
