erry Christmas, dear Vestnik Readers! Wishing you a beautiful 2019 filled with good health and many blessings.

A older song came on the radio on my drive home one evening. It really touched my heart and reminds me of the true meaning of Christmas. The song “The Christmas Shoes,” which is also a TV movie and a book, was written in 2000 by Eddie Carswell, Leonard Ahlstrom, and Isaiah “D.C.” Daniel.

It was almost Christmas time, there I stood in another line tryin’ to buy that last gift or two, not really in the Christmas mood.

Standing right in front of me was a little boy waiting anxiously pacing ‘round like little boys do. And in his hands he held a pair of shoes. His clothes were worn and old, he was dirty from head to toe.

And when it came his time to pay, I couldn’t believe what I heard him say.

“Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my mama, please. It’s Christmas Eve, and these shoes are just her size.

Could you hurry, sir? Daddy says there’s not much time. You see, she’s been sick for quite a while, and I know these shoes would make her smile.

And I want her to look beautiful if Mama meets Jesus tonight.”

He counted pennies for what seemed like years. Then the cashier said, “Son, there’s not enough here.”

He searched his pockets frantically.

Then he turned, and he looked at me.

He said, “Mama made Christmas good at our house though most years she just did without. “Tell me Sir, what am I going to do? Somehow I’ve got to buy her these Christmas shoes.”

So I laid the money down, I just had to help him out. And I’ll never forget the look on his face when he said, “Mama’s gonna look so great. “Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my mama, please. It’s Christmas Eve, and these shoes are just her size. Could you hurry, sir? Daddy says there’s not much time. You see, she’s been sick for quite a while, and I know these shoes would make her smile. And I want her to look beautiful if Mama meets Jesus tonight.”

I knew I’d caught a glimpse of heaven’s love as he thanked me and ran out. I knew that God had sent that little boy to remind me just what Christmas is all about.

wjyb Good Eats byjw Rohlíky Annie Michalsky Lodge 91, San Jacinto 1 cup milk 5 Tablespoons sugar 1 teaspoon salt 1 package dry yeast 1 cup lukewarm water 6 cups sifted flour 6 Tablespoons melted Crisco 1 stick melted butter for brushing Scald milk. Place sugar and salt in a large mixing bowl, pour milk over it, stir to dissolve both. Dissolve yeast in warm water, add to the lukewarm milk. Add 3 cups flour, blend well. Add the cooled Crisco and work until smooth. Work in 2 1/2 cups flour, again until smooth.

Place remaining flour on pastry cloth; pour dough onto it and knead well. Place in greased bowl, turn over, cover, and let rise till double. Cut into 4 equal pieces.

Roll first into a round circle about 1/4inch thick. Brush with melted butter, cut like a pie into 8 pieces. Roll up beginning with the wide end. Place on baking pan about an inch apart turning in the ends and make sure pointed end is on the bottom. When pan is full, once again, brush with butter, let rise. Bake in a 425degree oven, 10 minutes on the bottom rack, 10 on top. Once again, brush with butter when removing from oven.

Camp/Facility Executive Director Department: Classification: Reports to: Supervises:

Fraternal Exempt President All Camp Staff

Position Purpose To further the mission of the SPJST Camps and Camp Kubena through positive, caring relationships with guests and staff, manage camp facilities, human resources, and sales and marketing. The Executive Director will oversee coordination and delivery of all aspects of camp operations and interact with guests and staff to provide a positive overall experience at the camp.

Essential Job Functions 1. Supervise staff, guest arrivals and departures, and maintenance of camp facility.

2. Supervise recruitment, interviewing, hiring, and training seasonal staff with the goal to retain seasonal and year-round employees.

3. Be responsible for extending programs to religious, civic, fraternal, educational, and other community-based organizations.

4. Ensure that state and local regulations are being met and that all-American Camping Association Standards are met to maintain ACA accreditation.

5. Plan, schedule, track, and report labor hours and payroll expenses on a bi-weekly basis to SPJST Human Resources Administrator.

6. Be responsible for identifying issues of possible risk (ex. safety, clutter, cleanliness, injuries, equipment, storm damage, maintenance needs, upset or misbehaving campers, etc.) during the day-to-day operations of Camp Kubena. Major problems will be addressed immediately, reported to, and coordinated with the SPJST Supreme Lodge Board of Directors. Major improvements that are needed shall be itemized, prioritized, and discussed with the Board of Directors. The funding of major improvements shall be made only with the authorizations of the Board of Directors.

7. Work with finance to ensure timely bill payment.

8. Be responsible for delivery of services, programs, and activities appropriate to the camper population.

9. Develop and maintain a budget 10. Confirm all details for rental groups; number of campers, food allergies, medical needs, group agenda, and rental agreements.

11. Ensure that someone is present on the property at all times to handle any situation that arises in camp that needs to be resolved.

12. Carry out any assignments related to the benefit and operation of the camp as needed.

Other Job Duties • Maintain clear and positive written and verbal communication with all camp staff.

• Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, providing support and guidance to those assigned as leaders.

• Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.

• Provide ongoing program ideas to counseling and activity area staff.

Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree in a related field with recreation/camp experience or five years of administrative experience in a recreation/camp field.

• Experience in the development and delivery of programs and activities for similar population.

• Current instructional certification in program or related experience.

• Familiar/knowledge of ACA Accreditation standards preferred.

• Current certification in first aid and CPR. • Preferred certifications: Life Guard Instructor, High/Low Ropes Certification (or ability to obtain) • Experience with a budget and some accounting.

• Ability to relate with and convey enthusiasm for supporting SPJST’s mission as stated in the Preamble of the SPJST By-Laws:

• Must be able to lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds periodically.

District Seven Sales Christmas Holiday Party

Lodge 6, Cottonwood hosts Christmas meal President Milton Peterson called the Lodge 6, Cottonwood meeting to order on Sunday, December 2, 2018, at 2 p.m.

Sister Peggy Dobecka led the Pledge of Allegiance and SPJST motto. Sister Georgie reported 17 members present.

Sister Barbara Hykel read the minutes from the last meeting.

Sister Peggy Dobecka gave the treasurer’s report and the youth report. The youth will take goodie bags to the rest home on Sunday, December 9. Today, the youth will have a short program, and Santa will come. The youth will have a prize drawing with the money going to Toys-for-Tots.

Brother Jerry Kucera introduced Mr. James Nemec to the lodge. He is our new sales agent.

Sympathy cards were sent to the families of Rita Svacek. A get well card was sent to Dan Ferguson. Birthday card was sent to Ernest Bezdek. December birthday was Pam Urbanovsky. Progressive door prize winner for $10 was Sister Georgie Soukup. The $5 winner was absent. Attendance door prize winners were Jerry Kucera, Georgie Soukup, and Mary Neckar.

The lodge served a wonderful meal of turkey, ham, and all the trimmings to members present.

Next Meeting—January 6, 2019 The next meeting will be Sunday, January 6 at 2 p.m.

Mutual Fraternal Friends A Christmas holiday party was held in Corpus Christi, Texas, on Saturday, December 8, 2018, featuring sales agents and spouses, special friends, and Lodge 79, Corpus Christi Vice President Jerry Sijansky and wife Jill.

The party included lots of food, drinks, fun, dancing, and laughter. A meal of brisket, ham, homemade tamales, barbecue chicken wings, sides, apple pie, and red velvet cake was served. Special thanks to Debby Whittington for cooking and for helping coordinate the party.

Lodge 8, Weimar posts 2019 meeting dates Lodge 8, Weimar met on Monday, November 26, 2018, at 6 p.m. at Oakridge Smokehouse in Schulenburg.

Luther Lorfing led the Pledge of Allegiance. Earlene Lorfing led the prayer before we enjoyed a Thanksgiving buffet dinner, compliments of Lodge 8, Weimar.

President Henrietta Veselka called the meeting to order. All officers were in attendance. Also in attendance were District Six Director Karen Kaspar, District Six Regional General Agent Carolina Covarrubia, State Fraternal Director Frank Horak. Minutes of the August 27 meeting were published in

the Vestnik. Anton Machacek made a motion, seconded by Becky Jares, to accept the August minutes as presented.

Motion carried. Treasurer Carolyn M. Tobola gave her report. Anton Machacek made a motion, seconded by Earlene Lorfing, to accept the treasurer’s report as presented. Motion carried.

Correspondence was received from SPJST Compliance Specialist Tamara Gettys referencing the Home Office needing an annual update by May 1, 2019, to keep our lodge in good standings. Failure to receive this information by the Home Office would disqualify the lodge for premium refunds or other benefits. This matter was taken care of

by Henrietta and Frank.

Becky Jares make a motion, seconded by Rosie Sumbera, to elect Anton Machacek as fraternalist of the year.

Henrietta reported applications for

VĚSTNÍK SPJST Scholarships for graduating high school seniors or students enrolled in college are due February 1, 2019. Henrietta reported District Six Fall Fun Day, held on October 14, was a fun meeting.

Henrietta thanked members who brought pull tabs. They will be taken by Frank to Ronald McDonald House in Temple. The food brought to this meeting will be going to Weimar Food Pantry. Henrietta will deliver it.

Lodge 8, Weimar members express our heartfelt sympathy to the families of District Four Director Billy Rollwitz, Jerome E. Dorotik (father of District Six Director Karen Kaspar); and Honorary District Six Director Michael “Mike” K. Ahlstrom. May our God keep all these families in His tender loving care in this holiday season. Karen thanked the lodge and other individuals for the sympathy cards sent to her.

Motion was made by Melvin Tobola, seconded by Rosie Sumbera, to start having four meetings a year. The meetings for 2019 will be February 25, May 27, August 26, and November 25.

Home Office Christmas Charity Project

For our Christmas charity project, SPJST Home Office partnered with Community in Schools, a program that benefits youth in the local area. We sponsored 14 youth and one baby who is to be born before the new year. SPJST Home Office employees donated a total of $455 in cash and some items as well! Without a doubt, these donations will be appreciated and will make a difference in the lives of these youth.

Thank you to everyone who was able to give! Frank, Tammy, Holly, Mary, and Dolores joined me in a shopping experience that for me will never be forgotten. Virginia, Dolores, Marissa, Carol, Tammy, and Frank did a fantastic job with wrapping the presents. A huge thank you to everyone for making this possible!

Lodge 24, Cyclone members enjoy Christmas party Lodge 24, Cyclone met at Oscar Store on Monday, December 10, 2018, for its Christmas party. There were 38 present for the festivities with District Two Director Jesse Pospisil and wife Linda and our member Brian Vanicek, president of SPJST. Director Pospisil presented a check for $150 to Ronald McDonald House.

The lodge will match this with a $150 donation.

Lodge 24, Cyclone hosts Christmas Party at Oscar Store On Monday, December 10, 2018, the Lodge 24, Cyclone Christmas party was held at Oscar Store in Temple. Oscar Store is owned by Thomas Maddux, who is a member of Lodge 24.

Many lodge members were in attendance. The evening began with mem-

bers visiting and enjoying fellowship with one another. Lodge 24 President Daniel Wilde welcomed everyone, and Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek led everyone in prayer. Afterwards, a delicious meal of chicken fried steak or grilled chicken was served as more

fellowship continued.

After the wonderful meal, District Two Director Jesse Pospisil then presented a donation for Ronald McDonald House on behalf of SPJST from his discretionary fund.

A gift drawing was held, and everyone was able to receive an item. SPJST

President Vanicek then discussed various events going on at other lodges. A big thanks to Brian and Jesse for supplying the gifts and to everyone who attended the party.

City of Ennis. We were well fed!

The monthly meeting was called to order at 7 p.m. by President JoAnn Jones. The Pledge of Allegiance was led

by Margaret Krajca. A moment of silence was observed for Albin Bouska and Fran Slovak. On the sick list were Linda Zabojnik and Pat Fowler.

In the absence of Secretary Pat Fowler, the minutes to the last meeting were read by President Jones. Betty Macalik gave the financial and treasury reports. Vice President Laure Krajca gave the bar reports.

FAC Kay Lynn Kovar reported on upcoming events including our nomination of fraternalist of the year who will be recognized at the district meeting in the spring. She also reported that the SPJST State Progressive 42 Domino Tournament in Temple is Saturday, January 12, 2019.

In the absence of Youth Leader Rita Holland, the youth report was given by Betty Macalik. The youth enjoyed a social outing at Dairy Queen and gave a Christmas performance at Legend Oaks Rehab and Retirement Center.

Sales Agent Margaret Krajca reported one new member pending.

Correspondence included a thank you note from Helping Hands of Ennis for our monetary donation.

Under old business, contractors have been hired to reface the front of the building, 42 inches from the ground, with Austin stone blend. The metal front, flag pole, railing, and car stops will be repainted. Work will begin later this year. Estimates for the bar remodel project were presented. Members voted to move forward with the project.

Under new business, there was further discussion on the outside front building façade. Members set an additional budget and voted to move forward

Lodge 30, Taiton elects 2019 officers Dear Vestnik Readers, SPJST Lodge 30, Taiton was called to order on Sunday, November 4, 2018, at Taiton Community Center by President Yvonne Marcaurele. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Carolina Covarrubia. A moment of silence was observed for sick or departed members.

Minutes for the September and October meetings were read.

Treasurer Lisa Bubela reported on the financial standing of the lodge.

FAC Patsy Baker informed members of the upcoming events around the state.

She informed members that the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive began on October 1 and continues until March.

She reminded members that we will elect officers.

A thank you note was read and discussed from the Jerome Dorotik family with a personal note from District Six Director Karen Kaspar. Secretary Marjorie Treumer also read lapses, new insurance issued, and terminations.

Youth Leader Lisa Bubela informed members of upcoming important dates.

She thanked the members for all their help at the TCC Fall Festival as well as everyone who attended the district meeting in conjunction with the Dozinky Festival. She reported that we made a $500 donation to the festival as well as paying the entrance fee for all SPJST members attending the District Six Fall Fun Day. She then asked the parents to print out the online newsletter from Frank. There have been many changes listed that the members need to read. Camp Kubena is now accredited, and the DYCs have been given the opportunity to attend Camp America to learn what is happen-

Director Kaspar reported that she had recently attended the quarterly meeting at the SPJST Home Office. She then reported that she had been busy talking to some potential new members, and that she and Carolina will be attending several upcoming holiday social events.

Final plans for the menu for the upcoming annual Christmas social were then discussed. We will have chicken, dressing, green beans, salad, and dessert.

The youth members were asked to bring centerpieces to decorate the tables with.

Members are asked to arrive at 10 a.m. to set up the hall. The youth meeting will be held at 10:30 a.m. Social time begins at 11 a.m. with the adult meeting beginning at 11:30 a.m. The catered meal will be served after the meeting.

We discussed the charitable donation that is to be made. Marjorie Treumer made a motion to donate to the Elks Lodge’s Helping Disabled Community Members with Wheelchairs program.

Karen Kaspar seconded the motion.

Motion carried. Megan Riha made a motion to give $250, and Wendy Korenek seconded the motion. The motion carried. Director Kaspar then announced that she would also make a donation of her own for the project.

In memory of George H.W. Bush The United States flag at the SPJST Home Office in Temple flies at half-staff in honor and memory of George Herbert Walker Bush who served as the 41st President of the United States from 1989 to 1993. President Bush passed away on November 30, 2018, in Houston.

Wednesday, December 26, 2018 Officers were then elected. The nomination committee presented a slate of officers for the members. Kirby Lange made a motion that nominations cease.

Tara and Paul Schlesinger named Musical Artists of the Year

by Country Music Hall of Fame in Gatesville Tara and Paul Schlesinger have been named Musical Artists of the Year by the Country Music Hall of Fame in Gatesville, Texas.

The award ceremony took place on Friday, November 16, 2018, at the City Auditorium during their guest performance at the Tara and Paul Schlesinger rem o n t h l y ceived the Musical Artists of the Gatesville Coun- Year awar¬d from the Gatesville try Music Hall of Country Music Hall of Fame. The induction took place on NovemFame Show.

Paul is a fid- ber 16, 2018, at Gatesville City dler and vocalist Auditorium. from Taylor and a member of SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor. His wife Tara is a pianist and vocalist. She is the activity director at S.P.J.S.T. Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation facility in Taylor. They frequently perform together as a husband wife duo, or with Paul’s band, the Knights of Texas Swing.

John Nickell, public information officer for the Hall of Fame, says, “Paul and Tara always bring us great music and entertainment. Tara is a master on the keyboard. She sings with a loud and wonderful voice. Paul is simply a great fiddle player. He shows how to play the fiddle lying on his back on the floor, behind his back standing up, and with the bow shaft under the fiddle and the horsehair strings above the fiddle.”

Paul’s band, the Knights of Texas Swing perform regularly at many area venues, including Patsy’s Café in Austin, the annual Old Settler’s Reunion in Round Rock, and the St. Michael’s annual picnic in Winchester. Paul is also music director and band leader for the Cowboy Church of Lee County in Giddings. Both he and Tara perform with that church’s band, Second Chance. The couple is also part of the house band at the monthly Comal Country Music Show in New Braunfels.

Lodge 35, Elk members enjoy Christmas barbecue meal On Sunday, December 9, 2018, SPJST Lodge 35, Elk and Elk Hall meetings were called to order at 3:44 p.m. by President Randy Pavelka. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by officers, members, and guests. Tammy Pavelka read the minutes of the November meetings in Treasurer Carla Price’s absence. There were no corrections, and the minutes were approved as read.

Treasurer Barbara Pavelka had no reports, and there was no old or unfinished business.

Floor Chairman Gene Pavelka and Bar Chairman Randy Pavelka gave their reports.

Under new business, a motion was made by Gene Pavelka to give Barbara Pavelka and Carla Price a raise in their reimbursement for the year. The motion was seconded by Walter Kubitza, and the motion passed to give them both a raise.

We would like to thank Walter and Fred Kubitza for working on our parking lot. It looks great now. We also have new lighted signs in the hall that look super great. Thank you!

Longtime member Richard Brewer celebrated his 75th birthday on December 15. Congratulations to you, and we wish you many more happy and healthy years!

Lodge 80, Holland members part of Hurricane Michael disaster response team Team members of Central Texas Christian Disaster Response Team returned from working in Marianna, Florida, post Hurricane Michael.

Team members served a total of 25 days in Marianna since October 14, 2018.

Lodge 48, Beyersville to host January 19 tarok tournament SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville will again host a tarok tournament on Saturday, January 19, 2019, to give you tarok players the chance to practice for the SPJST State Tarok Tournament which will be held at the Home Office in Temple on Saturday, February 2.

All rules will be the same as the SPJST tournament. We will charge a $10 entry fee and provide coffee, snacks, and a noon meal. Prizes will be $100 for first prize, $75 for second place, $50 for third place, and $25 for fourth. A prize of $5 will be awarded for the player having the most chips on each round.

Lodge 30, Taiton adults, youth support Elks Lodge

For their Christmas charity, Lodge 30, Taiton adults and youth presented a donation to the Elks Lodge. Donnie Roddy and Bubba Baker accepted the donation. SPJST District Six Director Karen Kaspar also presented a donation from her director’s discretionary fund which assists charitable causes throughout communities around the district.

Czech Christmas carols were in the air as the SPJST Lodge 88 Czech Chorus performed for the residents at the annual S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living Christmas Party in Needville on Saturday, December 15, 2018. This is the 48th year that the chorus has performed as a fraternal activity. Ms. Carolyn F. Beseda directed the chorus in the joyous singing of both Czech and English carols while the audience participated by singing from song sheets. Lodge 91, San Jacinto shares Christmas party scenes

Lodge 91, San Jacinto members met Saturday, December 8, 2018, at Golden Corral in Baytown, where they enjoyed a meal. The lodge also collected donations for its Paws Across Texas drive to benefit the local animal

treasury report, and it was approved as read. Special Funds Chairman Dan Natho read his report, and it was approved as read.

Under old business, Seth Sacra installed the officers. Under old business, President Vincent Newman mentioned that he sent a certified letter requesting a refund to the person we had contracted

to paint the outside of the hall. So far, we had no response from him except his signing for delivery of this letter. David Mann said that he’s willing to hot pressure wash the front of the building, apply epoxy primer, and apply epoxy paint to the front of the building so it doesn’t look so bad. Also under old business, Jeanette Newman handed out copies of the rules and regulations. After a few minor corrections, Jeanette will reprint and give corrected copies at the January meeting.

Under new business, Dan Natho mentioned getting a post office box for the lodge. It was made into a motion and passed.

Under other business, Jeanette Newman said that she will put the scholarship information in the local newspapers.

Everyone received a door prize, and after singing a few Christmas songs, everyone received a Christmas bag.

Next Meeting—January 20 For the next meeting on Sunday, January 20, 2019, the lodge will buy plates from the Needville Youth Fair fundraiser. Members, please remember to bring a dessert. See you at the next meeting!

Lodge 180, Burleson blessed to help area organizations I cannot begin to express what a great and wonderful enjoyment we had at our Christmas party this year. There was so much joy, love, and camaraderie that it is almost impossible to tell you how we much we all enjoyed the party.

It is hard to describe all the great vibes and feelings that I have when given the opportunity to share Lodge 180, Burleson’s generosity. We do have others in this world who are in need and are deserving to have a better life. Being able to share is a blessing. Little did I know that being president of Lodge 180 had so many perks.

We were very fortunate to have so many guests to show in spite of the cold, drizzly rain that we had. We had SPJST Supreme Lodge Vice President Hiram Dixon; State Fraternal Director Frank Horak and wife Connie - Frank is responsible for a lot of activities associated with the different lodges; John Engelke and his wife Diana - John is a director responsible for District Three and tries his best to keep us on the straight and narrow; and Melanie Zavodny and her husband David Nauert Melanie is the editor of our paper, the Vestnik. She also has the responsiblity of

We also had a lot of Lodge 180 members in attendance, and it was such a treat to be able to visit and socialize with

everyone - Nancy and Red Kelly, Rhonda and Joe Hurtik, Carmon and Joe Babino, Sandy and Logan Almonte, Liana Scott, and Dena and Dylan Bowden. Several members were out for health reasons for themselves and their loved ones.

Pat and Robert Sill brought a giant cake for us all to enjoy after we dined on El Fenix food and drinks. Rita Mardis also brought a giant box of Millionaire Candy. I think that we all felt

like millionaires after all of the luxurious desserts. Thanks for indulging us with the sweets.

A brief discussion was conducted regarding the upcoming visit to Burleson Nursing/Rehab Home in early January.

I also mentioned that I still had a lot of “Back the Blue” caps on hand and checked to see if anyone was interested in buying several. A suggestion was made by Nicole Seise to give those hats to the nursing home residents. That will be an additional gift for them as we are planning on delivering two other small gifts. We are all looking forward to being able to go there in January to spread a little cheer. I truly believe that we enjoy the trip more than the residents.

We had drawings for door prizes at the end of the party so everyone had an opportunity to have a “little something extra” to take home. The lucky winners were Red Kelly - $50 Walmart gift card; Joe Hurtik - $50 Walmart gift card; John Engelke - $50 Walmart gift card; Nicole Seise - $50 Walmart gift card; Dena Bowden - $25 Applebee’s gift card; and Rita Mardis - $25 Olive Garden gift card.

Each guest also had an opportunity to take home a wrapped Millionaire candy to enjoy as each made their way home.

Lodge 191, Lufkin New Year’s Eve dance: Glenn Lenderman and Friends Our own Glenn Lenderman and Friends will be playing for the New Year’s Eve dance on Monday, December 3, 2018. Glenn always has good music and always puts on a good show.

Lodge 200 Bruceville-Eddy enjoys Christmas social Members of Lodge 200, BrucevilleEddy met at Taylor Hall on Thursday, December 6, 2018, for their annual Christmas party.

Lodge members met and socialized before the meal which was catered by Edwin and Judy Pechal of Lodge 47, Seaton and owners of Ratibor Country Grill. Leonard Mikeska gave the blessing, and the meal was served.

After the meal, District Two Director Jesse Pospisil installed the officers and presented a check from his discretionary

fund to be donated to Taylor Hall/Senior Citizen Hall in Eddy.

Activities were then led by Melanie and David with guessing games and riddles, gift exchange, and prize drawing.

Everyone had a good time and was excited for the upcoming holiday season.

I would like to thank everyone for helping put this together and to wish all a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

We look forward to the upcoming year.

President James House presided. All officers were present.

The lodge will meet quarterly in 2019, and the youth club will meet monthly.

Nonperishable food, toys, and a lodge monetary donation will benefit ACCEPT for the needy in the county.

The youth club members donated shoe boxes filled with toys, school supplies, and hygiene items for CASA.

Ennis Sewing Circle Ennis Sewing Circle met on Thursday, December 13, 2018, at the Sokol Club Room. We met around 9:30 to 10 a.m. As we were not quilting, everyone brought food items for Helping Hands here in Ennis. I want to thank everyone.

I was told that the gentleman who came and picked up the donations was so very happy, and that it was 250 pounds of items.

As President Irene was ill that day and didn’t attend, Vice President Ginny called the meeting to order. We all recited the Pledge of Allegiance and the “Our Father” for Lillie Toth Cline and all our sick members.

Secretary Dee Anderson read the minutes of our last meeting, and Treasurer Dolores Vrana gave her report.

Both were approved as read.

Ginny showed all the items that were

in the gift bags of our two shut-in members Bessie Laznovsky and Geraldine Zhanel. Sorry, I didn’t hear who was delivering them.

Ginny announced that President Irene plans to have a quilt workshop in January 2019. If you have any questions on how to start your quilt top, Irene can help you.

Libbie Vrla introduced her guest Helen Skrasek from Fort Worth. We must send Helen a big thank you as she handed out red ballpoint pens to everyone, and they really write well.

Libbie also showed a big people’s bib that she bought somewhere for the Circle for anyone who wants to take it home to make some for someone they may know in the nursing home.

Dorothy had cards for us to sign for our shut-ins Bessie and Geraldine, for Martha Ritchey who was out sick, Bertha and Julius Podhrasky, Ann Tupy, and Joyce Ehrenberger. We wish them all a very merry Christmas and happy New Year.

It was announced in January 2019, we will have soup and sandwiches.

Sorry, I didn’t catch who will bring what, but I’m sure we will have more than enough.

The 50-50 dollar winner was Georgia Holy. We also had a drawing for our

✝ Our sympathy goes out to Kathy and all of her family on the passing of their beloved Mike. Mike was a kind and great gentleman. I had the pleasure of serving on several boards and committees of the SPJST and truly enjoyed our time together. We served on the SPJST By-Law Committee for many years, as Supreme Lodge Directors, and in the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes (now S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living) organization. We spent a lot of time together discussing things that we thought needed to be done to always make the organizations better. Mike always stood for what was the best and was dedicated to SPJST and all other organizations he was a part of.

I was sad when Mike left the Supreme Lodge, but knew it was basically for health reasons. We kind of lost contact with each other for the last part of his life, and I regret that this happened. I know he is now in a much better place, and all of his pain and suffering are now gone.

Expression of Sympathy We, the members of Lodge 66, Waco, wish to express our deepest and sincerest sympathy to the family of our departed sister.

IRENE (MIKESKA) JEZ, age 89, of Waco, passed away Friday morning, December 7, 2018 at West Rest Haven.

Funeral service was held at 11 a.m.

Tuesday, December 11 at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel in West, with Reverend B. George officiating.

Graveside service Irene Jez was at 1:30 p.m.

Irene was born August 7, 1929, in Meeks, the daughter of the late William “Bill” and Emily (Kudlacek) Mikeska.

She was a graduate of Rogers High School. Irene was united in marriage to James Jez in Temple, and he preceded

Visionaries of Freedom unveiled at Czech Heritage Museum

By Susan Chandler CHM Executive Director We recently unveiled a new painting at the Czech Heritage Museum in Temple. Local artist Lisa Chase painted the 40- by 60-inch oil on canvas as a gift to the Museum. The painting honors two historic Czech figures, Tomás Masaryk, first president of Czechoslovakia, and Václav Havel, first president of independent Czechoslovakia after communism and first president of the Czech Republic.

It has been very touching to see the reactions of visitors from the Czech Republic. More than once, I have seen tears.

We are very grateful for this exquisite gift from Lisa Chase. Her skill and talent for painting portraits is rare. The painting provides a fitting symbol of the timeless hope of freedom. It threads the

story of the early Czech immigrants to Texas through historical eras and peoples around the globe and back home again. It is a beautiful centerpiece for our Museum.

Artist Statement I am a lifelong self-taught artist. I have spent the majority of my work in portraits and was very pleased to be able to provide this portrait of Masaryk and Havel for my friends at the Czech Heritage Museum.

I was brought up with a strong sense of pride in our nation, and taught appreciation for the prices paid for our freedoms. We, as Americans, have never had to suffer the loss of them, as did the homelands of these freedom fighters here.

America is now being seduced by the siren call of socialism, and hit on virtually every front to buy into it through promises of equality and utopia. Our liberties that over time have been undermined and slowly chiseled down are now being blatantly and aggressively attacked with the speed of a river headed toward a waterfall. To the people who know the history of oppression through communism and socialism, these are very, very loud warning bells of the last steps into enslavement.

My appreciation for the courage of these two men who stepped in to the battle against these odds for the love of their country is personal, and it was a complete privilege to be able to have the opportunity to honor them with this portrait.

Člověk v tísni hledá dopisy psané přes železnou oponu Vážení přátelé, obracíme se na Vás v souvislosti s tvorbou nového filmu vzdělávacího projektu Příběhy bezpráví společnosti Člověk v tísni, který bude distribuován do stovek škol.

Téměř každý člověk žijící v České republice má mezi svými příbuznými či blízkými někoho, kdo emigroval. Někoho,

s kým v období komunistického Československa neviděl dlouhé roky, možná dokonce už nikdy. Mohli si psát pouze dopisy - dopisy psané přes železnou oponu. A právě ty teď hledáme.

Příští rok si budeme připomínat již 30. výročí sametové revoluce a opětovného otevření našich hranic. Chceme proto pro mladé lidi, kteří se již narodili do svobody, vytvořit film založený právě na korespondenci posílané z obou stran železné opony.

Přiblížíme jim tak odloučení, které onomu otevření hranic mnohdy předcházelo.
