ationally acclaimed motivational speaker and author Peter Vodenka will describe his “Journey for Freedom” on Tuesday, July 24, 2018, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the SPJST Home Office, 520 North Main Street in Temple. The evening will be hosted

by Texas Czech Genealogical Society and Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center.

Mr. Vodenka will share the story of how he spent many years planning and plotting his family’s escape from communist Czechoslovakia. When the time had come, he and his family ran for their lives across the border from communist Yugoslavia to western Austria.

Mr. Vodenka’s best selling book, Journey for Freedom, will be available for purchase after his presentation.

All are invited to attend the evening presentation to relive with Peter his escape from communist Czechoslovakia to freedom in America.

In addition to the July 24 presentation at the SPJST Home Office in Temple, Mr. Vodenka will share his story in Caldwell on July 21; Taylor on July 22; Taiton on July 23; and West on July 25.

Fourth of July Parades SPJST was represented well on the Fourth of July at parades in Arlington (with State Queen April Dvorak, District Three Royalty, and Lodges 183, Arlington and 154, Fort Worth); Belton (District Two Royalty and Lodge 47, Seaton); and Wall (Lodge 160,

San Angelo). Thanks to these members for spreading the SPJST message in these cities/communities. Photos will appear in next week’s Vestnik.

District YAD Results and Photos The Vestnik is proud to feature this summer’s District Youth Achievement Day results. Last week’s issue included District Three, and this week, we include Districts One and Seven.

We will continue to include District YADs in the July 25 and August 1 Vestniks. The August 1 issue will also feature the district kings and queens who will be competing for the titles of 2018-2019 SPJST State King and Queen. Stay tuned!

wjyb Good Eats byjw Vegetarian Quesadillas Velma Marx Lodge 29, Taylor 1/2 cup red bell pepper, chopped 1/2 cup zucchini squash, chopped 1/2 cup yellow squash, chopped 1/2 cup onion, chopped 1/2 cup mushrooms, chopped 1 Tablespoon olive oil 6 (9-inch) whole wheat tortillas 1 1/4 cups cheese, shredded In a skillet, cook red pepper, zucchini, yellow squash, onion and mushrooms in olive oil about 7 minutes, just until tender. Remove vegetables from pan. Coat

the same pan with cooking spray. Place one tortilla in pan. Sprinkle 1/4 cup cheese evenly on tortilla, layer 1/3 of the vegetables over cheese. Sprinkle another 1/8 cup cheese on the vegetables, top with second tortilla. Cook until golden on both sides for 2 to 3 minutes per side.

Remove quesadilla from pan. Repeat with remaining ingredients. Cut each quesadilla into 8 triangles with a pizza cutter. Serve hot.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood reports on July meeting President Milton Peterson called the meeting of SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood to order on Sunday, July 1, 2018, at 2:30 p.m. Sister Peggy Dobecka led the Pledge of Allegiance and SPJST motto.

Sister Georgie Soukup reported 15 members present. Sister Peggy Dobecka read the minutes for Sister Barbara Hykel since she was absent. Sister Evelyn Stuckly gave the FAC report.

Sister Peggy Dobecka gave the treasurer’s and youth reports. The youth will have a raffle and bingo at the picnic.

Brother Jerry Kucera had no report.

Sympathy cards were sent to Bruce Gerik, Chris Klaus, Kevin Klaus, Robby Payne, Gary Enders, and Edwin Husak.

Lodge 9, Snook Members Receive Scholarships

Lodge 18, Elgin presents scholarships We had two scholarship winners one was a member of Lodge 18, Elgin.

She is Addison Denmore, daughter of William and Kimberly Denmore. The other is Emanuel Diaz Suatez, son of Pedro Diaz and Herminia Diaz. Both stayed and visited with the lodge members present at the June meeting. We really like to meet the youth and find out what they are planning for the future.

June was a busy month with Western Days and school reunions. We want to thank HEB for the donations for the class reunions. Thank you for helping to make our guests welcome. Lodge 18 provided the band for the reunion classes at no charge to them. The cooler has been repaired so the refreshments will be good and cold for upcoming dances.

Thanks to District Two Beseda Dancers for performing at The Moravians dance on June 10. It’s so good to see we are keeping Czech culture alive.

It seems that the Czech, German, and Polish cultures are being forgotten. That is sad. The music, food, etc. is so good and unique; we must try not to lose that.

Let’s teach our youth to bake, cook, sew, and all other things our parents and grandparents did. With the way the economy is going, they will need help.

This month, the lodge sang “Happy Birthday” to me - thanks. We had no anniversaries.

SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone met Monday, July 9, 2018, at Flag Hall amid burned up corn and cotton that is holding on waiting for the Juneteenth to July 4 rains.

The meeting was called to order at 7:15 p.m. by President Daniel Wilde. He led the Pledge of Allegiance and had a silent prayer for the deceased members and the military. Margaret Mikeska read the minutes, and Linda Wilde had the financial report.

Achievement Day (YAD) on Saturday, July 14. Discussion followed about the meal for YAD. Discussion about the July 15 appearance of Squeezebox with Mollie B and Ted Lange held forth for a time.

We were saddened by the deaths of Bernice Sebek, Joyce Powell, and Olga Lydia Christy. We appreciate the work Bernice did for our lodge. Our condolences are extended to the families.

Shirley Hoelscher will have eye surgery on Tuesday, July 10. We extend our prayers.

Barbara Macek had a birthday on July 3.

Lodge 25, Ennis welcomes new member Lodge 25, Ennis and Sales Agent Margaret Krajca are proud to welcome new member Tucker Cole Rudd. Tucker was born on June 16, 2017, at Baylor Scott and White Medical Center in Waxahachie, Texas.

He is the son of Randi and Earl Rudd of Chatfield. Welcoming Tucker are his big brothers Levi, who is five years old, and Ty, who is three years old. They are all members of Lodge 25. Proud grandparents are Tammy Jones of Ennis and Calvin Jones of Mabank; Roland and Denise (Skrivanek) Christian, and Rusty and Linda Rudd, all of Ennis. Lodge 24, Cyclone appreciates Mother’s Day help Mother’s Day . . . a day in which we choose to truly let the women in our lives know how much we love and appreciate them.

Once again, the annual Mother’s Day dinner at SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone Flag Hall has come and gone. Not unnoticeable are the sacrifices all have made to help celebrate other mothers and these families.

So from all the members and families at Flag Hall - Lodge 24, we want to say thank you for the sacrifices you made to help celebrate every mother that has and will come in the future.

Lodge 47, Seaton barbecue cookoff this weekend SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall’s 26th Annual Barbecue Cookoff is this weekend - Friday, July 20 and Saturday, July 21, 2018. Star Hall is seven miles east of Temple on Highway 53.

We will have a free dance on Friday night with burgers being sold. Billy Holt Band will be playing Friday night. We will have a bounce house for the kiddos.

We will also have different vendors set up both Friday and Saturday selling all types of items. So make your plans. It will be fun for the entire family. We hope to see a great turn out this year!

District Two Beseda Dancers from Lodge 47, Seaton and Lodge 20, Granger were here to perform at The Moravians dance during the break. They did a great job. Lodge 191, Lufkin anniversary dance this Friday I hope everyone had a safe and happy Fourth of July!

Remember, this Friday, July 20 is the anniversary dance, and all members of the lodge get in free of charge every year at this dance. So please make plans to attend!

The lodge will be giving away two $500 scholarships during intermission to two well-deserving young ladies. They are both granddaughters of AC and Kathy Riley. They are Macy Nicole Riley and Abigail Lawren Riley.

There will also be a silent auction. If you have something that you would like to donate to the lodge for this auction, please bring it to the dance on Friday, July 20. It will be greatly appreciated.

The money from the auction will go to paying our insurance that has to be paid every year in order to operate the building.

The band for this dance will be Johnny Tobias and the Solid Gold band.

The dance is from 7 to 10 p.m. Admission for guests will be $8. If you were a member, you would be getting in free of charge! Free is always good! It is always at the same place - SPJST Lodge 191 Hall at 197 Hughes Road in Lufkin.

Thanks for all of the prayers, cards, phone calls, and visits for Doyle Oliver who is doing much better.

Some of our older members might remember a couple by the name of George and Josie Crowson who used to dance at the lodge in the early days. I received an email from Ann Richardson telling me that Josie passed away on Memorial Day this year. They had moved to Virginia.

Lodge 24, Cyclone joins hands with local groups to create blessing bags for Feed My Sheep Lodge 24, Cyclone’s Join Hands Day project was held in conjunction with the June lodge meeting. We joined hands with Lodge 24 Youth Club, St. Mary’s Altar Society at St Joseph’s in Cyclone, Knights of Columbus from Cyclone/Marak, and Feed My Sheep in Temple. It always gives us such a special feeling to extend a little comfort to the less fortunate in the

Temple area. We created “blessing bags.” The bags each contained items such as wash clothes, soap, lip balm, bottled water, snacks, and many more items to add a little sunshine to someone’s day.

Corpus Christi Getaway Prize Drawing to benefit Czech Heritage Museum, SPJST Education and Nature Center

Dear Members, It’s that time again! The End of Summer Getaway is right around the corner - August 10, 11, and 12, 2018, in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Once again, we will be having the prize drawing at the Corpus Christi Getaway. At the District Seven Spring Meeting, the membership voted to donate the proceeds from the end of summer prize drawing to the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center and SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC).

This section is dedicated to the youth of SPJST. As part of its membership benefits, SPJST offers a statewide youth program.

YAD is this weekend! We are finalizing things and excited for a great funfilled day with all our talented District Two youth! I am so proud of the many of you who are participating. Whether participating or not, please join us and cheer on your friends!

Another big event is coming up soon.

It will be Friday, July 27 at Walker Pool in Temple from 7 to 9 p.m. Bring your friends! I hope to see all of you to make this another great time together. Each family is asked to bring snacks to share.

Drinks will be provided by the district.

Let all your friends know what a good time we have and all the fun things we do. Hopefully, they will want to be a part of our youth clubs. I hope to see you and

Registration is from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Lunch will be served in the kitchen from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and it will be pizza and salad for a small fee. Lodge 49, Rowena youth share summer activities Redoing Rooms For the Fourth of July, we are redoing our rooms for our birthdays, too. My room is going to be blue and gray, and I am so happy.

Olivia Schwertner, age 14 ••• Basketball Games’ Victory I went and saw my cousins, and I had fun. My cousins are coming to my house. Also I won both my last basketball games.

Tracy Schwertner, age 12 ••• New Kittens So my cats had kittens. They are big now. We are painting our rooms. My colors are purple and turquoise.

Six Flags Fiesta Texas Last weekend, we went to Six Flags Fiesta Texas. It was so fun. We went during summer celebration. We rode the biggest ride - Iron Rattler. At the end of the day, we watched the fireworks show.

It was about 17 to 20 minutes.

Lodge 202, Jourdanton youth: busy summer These past couple of weeks have been plenty busy for me. First, there was Leaders-in-Training (LIT) camp, which I had a blast seeing all my friends from all districts. The new blob was amazing.

Then there was Youth Achievement Day (YAD). I received two first places so now, I will got to State YAD and will get to see all my friends from camp again.

District camp is coming up, and we will be camping with District One. I’m getting excited to meet new people and hopefully make new friends.

We are also redoing our rooms. My mom is off for the Fourth of July so she will help us paint them.

SPJST has always been a part of my life.

I attended my first Youth Achievement Day (YAD). YAD was very fun. I liked all the crafts and the talents. The crafts were artistic. The talents looked like they were fun to do. I made lots of friends at YAD. I am excited to participate next year.

“Bohemians in America” book to be published; seeking sponsorships Dear Friends, As you all know, this October we will celebrate the centennial anniversary of Czechoslovak independence. The T. G. Masaryk School was approached by the publisher of the Great Czechs series including Antonín Dvořák, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, Charles IV., and Comenius – which some of you already own – with a request for help with the distribution of a new volume in the United States.

The author and award-winning illustrator Renáta Fučíková, has now been working on a bilingual (Czech and English) book about Czechs in the United States titled “Bohemians in America” scheduled to be published this fall to commemorate not only great individuals but also the important role the Czech community played in the founding of Czechoslovakia.

This large format, fully illustrated book will be available on the Czech market for $35. However, the publisher is offering a special campaign for prescribers within our community who will be featured in the publication.

As the book is still in pre-production, Czech organizations in the United States have the opportunity to be acknowledged in the publication with a special dedication or even a portrait illustrated by the artist, depending on the level of sponsorship.

Taylor Czech Chorus presents scholarship The Taylor Czech Chorus is pleased to announce the 2018 scholarship recipient is Colton Machu. He is a recent graduate of Georgetown High School and the son of the late Greg Machu and Dawn (Mynar) Pehl and stepson of Michael Pehl.

Colton was presented a $500 check from Taylor Czech Chorus Director Diane Volek on Monday, July 2 during the monthly practice.

Taylor Czech Chorus members enjoyed hearing Colton explain what his Czech heritage means to him and how it has influenced his life. He told of a family trip to the Czech Republic where he had the opportunity to visit a school and talk with students and compare their different lifestyles.

Czech Culture of Dallas meets July 18 at Sokol Hall Dear Readers, It’s time to get prepared for Heritage Day (since we cannot have our event at the State Fair of Texas) that is set for Sunday, October 28, 2018, at Sokol Hall, 7448 Greenville Avenue in Dallas.

A meeting to begin preparations for Heritage Day is set for Wednesday, July 18 at Sokol Hall Dallas at 7 p.m. So if you can, please bring your ideas for the festivities, and let’s discuss our plans and start early! Early bird gets the worm so we will not be stressed in getting everything together.

From Communism to Freedom . . . a true story July 21 to July 25 Imagine life without the right to travel, without freedom of speech, or without the ability of choosing your occupation. Peter Vodenka lived that life for many years before escaping communism, with his young family, to find a new home in America. This escape had been planned and plotted for many years.

Finally the time had come. Despite extreme obstacles, there was no turn- Peter Vodenka ing back. The balance of their lives was at stake as they ran across the communist border to Austria.

Mr. Vodenka, nationally acclaimed inspirational speaker and author, will be making his first trip to Texas to relate the story of his life, his escape from communism to freedom in America, and his reason for imploring Americans to respect and honor our country because it is the only country on earth with so much freedom.

Saturday, July 21 - Caldwell Mr. Vodenka will be the keynote speaker on Saturday, July 21 at Texas Czech Genealogical Society’s summer conference at Caldwell Civic/Visitors’ Center, located at 103 Texas Highway 21 West in Caldwell, Texas. Other speakers will be Gladys Valchar, whom many members have been anxiously waiting to hear, describe her “Moravian Odyssey” which consisted of an extended stay in the land of her ancestors, due to a fall resulting in a broken leg, and Clint Williams, who will be helping folks break through their brick walls of genealogy. This will be a full day event which includes a catered lunch, silent auction, sales table, music, and fellowship time. Doors open at 8 a.m. Registration at the door will be $55 per person.
