Congratulations to 2018-2019 District Three Royalty. itting the road this summer and want to do something good for the world along the way? Consider using your summer road trip as an opportunity to give back to the communities you visit. For some inspiration, check out these great ways Americans are rethinking vacations to include a touch of philanthropy.

All those miles you log on the road can be for a good cause, if you look in the right places. Check out organizations and brands hosting fun fundraising or volunteer events on the road.

For example, “MINI Takes the States,” a biannual rally for MINI Cooper owners, gives participants an opportunity to explore America’s beauty while raising money for Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger relief organization dedicated to fighting domestic hunger through a network of food banks. In 2016, rally participants raised enough money to provide 1,301,969 meals to families in need, and this year’s goal is over 2 million meals. Occurring July 14 to 22 this year, MINI Takes the States will see owners kick off in either Orlando, Florida, or Portland, Oregon, and converge in Colorado, passing through some of America’s most interesting and beautiful sites and cities.

A portion of each registration fee is donated to Feeding America and participants are encouraged to start fundraising pages online and spread the word to friends and family to contribute to the cause. America’s parks need your help, particularly their hiking trails. Volun-

teer opportunities abound for those who wish to combine a road trip with trail stewardship. After traveling to your favorite park, join a volunteer crew to build or maintain a trail, increasing accessibility to America’s most beautiful natural wonders.

Or, be someone who brakes for animals — animal volunteer opportunities that is. Many animal sanctuaries welcome vacationing volunteers to provide extra hands. From socializing dogs to feeding horses, certain opportunities even include lodging to those giving their time.

By giving back to the places you visit, you can take the concept of the ultimate summer road trip to new heights. = = = Fraternal News = = = State Fraternal Director shares July updates Corpus Christi Getaway Come join the good times that are in store for you at the 12th Annual Corpus Christi Getaway! Make plans now to join old and new friends on August 10 to 12, 2018, for a fun-filled weekend. Last year, approximately 360 men, women, boys, and girls from across the state enjoyed the weekend fraternal celebration.

As in years past, SPJST rooms are blocked at the Emerald Beach Hotel in Corpus Christi. As of June 27, there are still rooms available for both Friday and Saturday night. If you have not already done so, please make your reservations as soon as possible by calling the hotel at 361-883-5731 and refer to group code “SPJ” to assure proper room rates.

Rates will change Thursday, July 26 to summer rates. If you have any problems or concerns while making your reservation please ask to speak with Mary Alice.

The 2018 celebration officially kicks off with the Friday night Aloha Party.

Member Referrals Wanted: Participate in the Monthly Prize Drawing!

When it comes to getting new SPJST members, there is no substitute for member referrals. Referral cards received during a given month will go into a drawing for three $25 Walmart gift cards. Happy 90th Birthday, Jerry Vitek of Lodge 24, Cyclone!

Jerry Vitek, lifelong resident of Belton, celebrated his 90th birthday with family and friends at Temple Brethren Church on Saturday, June 23, 2018. He turned 90 on Thursday, June 21.

Jerry was born near Rosebud, attended public schools in Rosebud and Bell County, and graduated from Rosebud High School. He earned his BBA from the University of Texas and his CPA license.

Jerry moved to Belton in 1947 to accept a position as office manager and bookkeeper for Tom Bowles, Jr. Grain Co. and Bowles Farm Supply. After 20 years, he became employed in civil service at Fort Hood for nearly 24 years. During this time, he also served as the fee accountant for the Belton, Rogers, Rockdale, and Copperas Cove Housing Authorities.

Jerry enjoyed being an avid, loyal spectator and supporter of all Belton

Independent School District athletics as long as his health allowed. Now, he is a television athletics spectator and supporter, who also enjoys reading and working puzzles.

Jerry served in the National Guard for 27 years (and retired as a Major) and on active duty at Fort Polk during the Berlin Crisis.

Jerry is a member of SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone, Temple Brethren Church, and various other organizations. He is also a member of The Unity of The Brethren and served as Synodical Officer as treasurer and financial secretary.

Lodge 47, Seaton announces barbecue cookoff activities Time is getting near so make your plans to come on out for SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall’s 26th Annual Barbecue Cookoff on Friday, July 20 and Saturday, July 21, 2018. Star Hall is seven miles east of Temple on Highway 53.

Lodge 80, Holland honors Flag Day and Corn Fest at June 14 Bingo

Fiddle Faddle, Bugles, and assorted snacks made from delicious corn filled the prize containers. The winners look very pleased to have won such tasty prizes!

In honor of Flag Day, American flags adorned the prize containers. Everyone stood for the recitation of the

Pledge of Allegiance at bingo. An online presentation of the vital importance of the flag and what it symbolizes made the Flag Day observance even more special.

Lodge 66, Waco recognizes fathers at June meeting The meeting of SPJST Lodge 66, Waco was called to order by President John Engelke at St. Paul’s Church on June 25, 2018, at 6 p.m. with all officers present. There were 10 members and three guests present - Joan Shelton, Hannah Galler, and Fiona Galler. Please come again.

Members stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance and motto.

Secretary Sister Dana McAdams read the minutes of the May 14 meeting, and they were approved as read.

Sister Diana Engelke read a thank you note from Ronald McDonald House for the donation of pull tabs from our lodge.

Sister Dorothy Veselka reported that the Entertainment Committee voted to have pizza, salad, dessert, and tea at the next meeting at St. Paul’s Church on Monday, July 16 at 6 p.m.

Sister Dorothy Veselka of the Cheer and Condolence Committee congratulated John and Diana Engelke on their 44th wedding anniversary on June 22.

Wishing you both many, many more anniversaries.

FAC Sister Diana Engelke read a letter from State Fraternal Director Frank Horak. She also read a print-out about Father’s Day. Bookkeeper Sister Diana Engelke gave the bookkeeping report.

A $100 donation for June will be made to Tri Cities Ministries.

Congratulations to Vice President Michael Galler on his retirement from Brazos Electric Cooperative.

Birthday celebrant for June was Margaret Narovec.

Door prize winner was Diana Engelke, and one hundred percent winner was Margaret Narovec.

Father of the year was Louie Veselka.

Scratch off tickets were presented to the fathers present - Douglas Galler, Michael Galler, Weldon Galler, John Engelke, and Louie Veselka.

Lodge 79 Corpus Christi members celebrate Father’s Day Lodge 79, Corpus Christi celebrated Father’s Day on Sunday, June 17, 2018, with a catered meal of chicken fried steak. Youth member Sarah Urbanovsky led us in prayer. Laura Rebecek decorated the tables with a Father’s Day theme. The meeting was called to order

by President Mark Rebecek who also led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. On the sick list were Jacob Rebecek recovering from surgery; Billy Roschesky, son of Leona Grant and brother of Youth Leader Marcia Rew; and Carlos Esquivel, grandson-in-law of Judy Majek.

We wish them all well.

All officers were present, and we had 27 members and guests in attendance.

The May minutes were read by Secretary Virginia Rebecek, and the treasurer’s report was given by Treasurer Frank Sacky. Both were approved.

The fraternal activities report was given by Vice President/FAC Jerry Sijansky. He talked about the weekend getaway, June 14 being Flag Day, and celebrating Father’s Day, and he asked for insurance referrals.

Under new business, Judy Majek made a motion that our monthly donation go to American Legion Post 364 for building repairs.

Youth Leader Marcia Rew gave the youth club report. The youth club had seven members and guests in attendance. The youth did the Milky Way project and filled bags with toiletries and other items to be donated to the Good Samaritan Rescue Mission. The youth will deliver the items then enjoy an outing to Peter Piper Pizza.

Youth members Sarah Urbanovsky, Marcus Rebecek, and Jacob Rebecek all showed their awards they received at the end of the school year.

Wedding anniversaries for June were Michael and Becky Urbanovsky - 27 years on the 29th, and Stephen and Laura Rebecek - 11 years on the 30th.

Happy anniversary!

Twenty-five dollar door prizes were won by Christina Rew and Marcus Rebecek. Leona Grant won $100 in a special door prize drawing.

Lodge 91, San Jacinto raises funds for Paws Across Texas

Dear Readers, Lodge 84, Dallas will host a lakeside picnic this Sunday, July 15, 2018!

Please join us as we enjoy a day of fun, fellowship, and food. The picnic will be held at 287 Autumnwood Trail in Gun Barrel City, Texas 75156.

Everyone is asked to bring a dessert and side dish to share; the lodge will provide meat, bread, and paper goods.

Everyone is also asked to bring his/her own folding tables and chairs, personal coolers with beverage of choice, and his/her own rod and reel if you want to fish. Other games and entertainment will be provided.

Lodge 91, San Jacinto held its second quarterly meeting of 2018 on June 3 at Crosby Dairy Queen. All officers were present with the exception of Vice President June Smesny.

Frankie Brewer called the meeting to order and opened with the Pledge of Allegiance. There was a moment of silence for departed members.

Minutes from the March meeting were read by Secretary Vonda Smesny.

A motion was made by Robert Smesny, seconded by Chester Stasney, to approve the minutes as read. Motion carried.

Treasurer Marie Stasney gave her report which included the enhanced premium refund which was $1 per paid up policy and 2 percent of the lodge’s annual earned premium.

Under old business, Malba Smesny mentioned the Paws Across Texas benefit held on March 30. She informed members present that a total of $420 and 340 pounds of food was collected at Crosby Walmart. She indicated that $200 would be given to A New Dawn and $200 to Shaggy Dog Rescue. The next scheduled Paws Across Texas is December 22.

Mrs. Smesny then mentioned the Corpus Christi Getaway scheduled for August 10 to 12 and the Crosby Alumni Association Scholarship. She indicated that she will find out the recipient of this scholarship.

Lodge 91 members then proceeded to welcome new member Lavern Trahan.

A motion was made by Malba Smesny, seconded by Marie Stasney, to accept

Lodge 141, Sealy welcomes guest to June meeting Lodge 141, Sealy members met Tuesday, June 10, 2018, at 6 p.m. at Gordon Memorial Library. President Rick Martinez called the meeting to order beginning with the Pledge of Allegiance. We had the pleasure of having District Manager Jim Schroeder visit our lodge. He gave an interesting talk on what SPJST has to offer and left his business card and SPJST informational booklets, pens, and emery boards.

The meeting then continued with Secretary Bernice Stolarski reading the minutes and Treasurer Freda Jemela giving her report. Both were approved.

Bernice reported that the Join Hands project was successful.

Next Meeting—August 14 The Tuesday, August 14 meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at Tony’s Restaurant.

Lodge 142, Houston welcomes new members The monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge 142, Houston was held Sunday, June 17, 2018, in the annex building at Lodge 88, Houston. At 1 p.m., a social and pizza luncheon was enjoyed by all.

The meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was led

by Flag Bearer Zoe Saxton. A moment of silence was observed for departed member Patricia Smith. May she rest in peace.

Roll call of officers showed Dennis and Elizabeth Hermis, Amanda Muzny, Carol LaPaige, Shelby Miller, and JR Coleman absent. Present were 22 members and guests Chris Comberrel and Mayco Ocampo.

We had seven new members - Dustin Golden, Shelby Miller, Sarah Norris, Amanda Norris, Adam Wooster, Katrina Masera, and Quinn Golden. We welcomed new sales agent Connie Carter.

In the absence of Secretary Elizabeth Hermis, Pat Schleider read the May meeting minutes. Financial/Treasurer Mary Ann Kieschnick read the May financials. Both reports were approved as read.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Pat Schleider reminded everyone of the Corpus Christi Getaway Weekend on August 10 to 12. Refer to the Vestnik for more details. As our meeting fell on Father’s Day, FAC Pat asked all fathers to stand. A round of applause was given to these great fathers.

Youth Leader Catherine Manchack reported 14 youth and three visitors present at the May meeting. The youth club’s correspondence included information about the Flag Day essay and coloring contest and Leaders-in-Training workshop at Camp Kubena. We will have 12 Lodge 142 Youth Club members and three Lodge 142 adults attending camp this year. Camp tee-shirts were handed out to all members who ordered them.

There was no old business.

Under new business, Keith reminded everyone of District Five Youth Achievement Day (YAD) on Sunday, July 22. If you can, please come out and support our youth because they will be our leaders of tomorrow.

Sick committee reported that Mary Jane Hue is still in rehab; Jack Manchack was back and doing well; Rosie Malota is in assisted living; and Bill Gaddy is in a nursing home.

Birthdays for June were Keith Kieschnick on the 18th and Ryleigh Comberrel on the 6th.

Door prizes were awarded along with additional Father’s Day prizes. The capsule drawing went unclaimed and not present - Diane Wishkoski, Elizabeth Benfer, Ashley Maul, Camryn Pflughaupt, and Pauline Moszkowicz.

The meeting adjourned at 2:45 p.m.

Lodge 187 Round Rock remembers founder Our lodge gathering in June started with a moment of silence for Mrs. Ella Mae Woytek who was one of the founders of Lodge 187, Round Rock.

We all talked about her celebrations of her life and family. Mrs. Woytek was a very strong, devoted woman to her faith, family, and community. She will be truly missed and always loved by all that knew her. Linda Johnson sent flowers from our lodge. Thank you, Linda, so very much.

We discussed who should be authorized to sign the lodge’s financial checks, contracts, and/or all other endeavors that

VĚSTNÍK concerns the lodge as a whole. It was voted that two officers should oversee it.

All voted for the president and treasurer.

We reminded everyone of the summer events - Corpus Christi Getaway and youth camp. We were also reminded about getting referrals turned in to be eligible for prizes. Flag Day was also discussed. Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers and mothers that do both jobs.

Birthdays in June were for Deborah Rohlack, Jennifer McCarthy, Alexis Meyer, Troy Oman, Thomas Shawn Oman, Luke Fuchs, Genelle Beck, Kay Beck Henderson, James Henderson, Danny Cantu, Paul Gainer, Jana Lynn Pachicano, and Codi Barron. Happy birthday!

We ended our gathering with a wonderful potluck. Thanks bunches to all who shared your yummy, tasty, mouthwatering dishes and treats! It was great!

Ennis Sewing Circle Ennis Sewing Circle met on Thursday, June 14, 2018, in the Sokol Club Room. Most of us - 22 members and three guests - came early. We welcomed Joan Atster, a guest of Sandy Pochobradsky; Joyce Ehrenberger, Circle member who now lives in North Carolina; and Mildred Trlica, one of our longtime members, who was brought by her daughter and son-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Cooper. We were so happy to see Mildred. She is 98 years young and on October 8, she will be 99 years young.

She looks great, still bakes bread, exercises, and does many things.

At lunchtime, President Irene led us in grace, and we all enjoyed a delicious lunch. After lunch, President Irene called the meeting to order, and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all.

A moment of silence was held for Geraldine Nekuza Kubin, sister-in-law of member Geraldine Kubin, and all our sick members.

Secretary Dee Anderson read the minutes of the last meeting with one correction. Treasurer Dolores Vrana gave her report, and Ginny read several funny articles. It was so good to have all of them back - stay well.

Hannah Chartrand with Ennis Now Magazine visited with us. She took pictures of us all quilting, some were cutting squares for next year’s Junior Sokol quilt, and a group picture of us all. She will be printing an article about our quilting club in Ennis Now Magazine in September. Everyone, try and remember to look for it.

President Irene asked for someone to volunteer to finish off our Christmas quilt. If someone did volunteer, I didn’t catch your name, sorry!

In August, we will quilt for Irene and in September for Sandy. Everyone, please come. We always need quilters.

It was announced we will be needing napkins, small plates, and forks for the kitchen. Sandy volunteered to bring it all. Please bring us the sales slip so we can reimburse you.

We had several members who were cutting squares and putting the correct color and number in plastic bags that were handed out to members to sew together. When brought back, we hope someone will volunteer to sew the square together for our 2019 Junior Sokol traveling fund quilt. President Irene showed an easy way to sew the squares together. I still haven’t sewn mine together. Hope I can remember how it is to be done.

Sunshine Lady Dorothy had cards for us to sign for Vickie Vlk and Dolores Vrana. Both have had surgery lately.

Let’s all remember them in our prayers.

Dorothy Prachyl was the 50-50 dollar winner. We are happy for you.

1 1/2 lb. yellow squash 1 lb. zucchini 1 small sweet onion, chopped 2 1/2 teaspoons salt, divided 1 cup carrots, grated 1 (10 3/4-oz.) can Cream of Chicken Soup 8 oz. sour cream 1 (8-oz.) can water chestnuts, drained and chopped (optional) 1 (8- oz.) pkg. herb-seasoned stuffing 1/2 cup butter, melted Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cut squash and zucchini into 1/4-inch thick slices; place in Dutch oven. Add chopped onion, 2 teaspoons salt, and water to cover. Bring to boil over medium-high heat and cook 5 minutes;

drain well. Stir together carrots, next 3 ingredients, and remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt in a large bowl; fold in squash mixture. Stir together stuffing and butter, and spoon half of stuffing mixture in bottom of a lightly greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Spoon squash mixture over stuffing mixture, and top with remaining stuffing mixture.

Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes or until bubbly and golden brown, shielding with aluminum foil after 20 to 25 minutes to prevent excessive browning, if necessary. Let stand 10 minutes before serving.

In Memory of Marie B. Horak Marie B. Horak, age 95, of West, passed away early Thursday afternoon, June 28, 2018, at West Rest Haven in West.

A rosary was recited, and mass of Christian burial celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 3 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption, with Reverend Darrell Kostiha as celebrant. Burial followed at St. Marie B. Horak Mary’s Cemetery.

Marie was born April 22, 1923, in West, the daughter of John and Barbara (Pribek) Mikulik. She attended schools in West and was a 1940 graduate of West High School. On August 4, 1947, she was united in marriage to Eugene C. Horak in West. Eugene preceded her in death on February 23, 2018. Marie was a homemaker. They

lived in Ennis, Dennison, Groesbeck, La Marque, and Bremond.

Marie was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption in West. She was also a member of the VFW Post 4819 Ladies Auxiliary, KJZT Society 11, SPJST Lodge 54, West, the 50/50 Club, and Czech Heritage Society.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents; and sisters-in-law Evelyn Pribyla, Edith Jones, and Evangela Horak.

Survivors include sister-in-law Ann Schneider; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Pallbearers were John Michael Altas, Brian Altas, Marvin Cepak, and Martin Zapletal.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s School Endowment Fund.

In Memory of Bernice Sebek Funeral service for Bernice Sophia Marek Sebek, 89, of Red Ranger, was at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 30, 2018, at Ocker Brethren Church with Reverend Michael Groseclose and Reverend Larry Zabcik officiating. Burial was in Ocker Brethren Church Cemetery.

Bernice was born May 16, 1929, at Red Ranger to Raymond Joe and Lois Kunz Luksa Marek. She met Joe Frank Sebek in March 1946, and Bernice Sebek they married a year later on March 15, 1947, at Ocker Brethren Church by Reverend Kostohryz. She was preceded in death by her husband; daughter DeAnn Lois; brother Gene Marek; and sisters Louise Zavodny and Doris Coots.

She is survived by sons David Joe Sebek and wife Lisa of Red Ranger, Mark Ray Sebek and wife Valerie of Rogers, and Ryan Joel Sebek and wife Stacie of Red Ranger; daughter Carol Bernice Chervenka and husband Johnny of Rogers; sisters Ramona Gerich and Rosamond Baker, both of Zabcikville, and Angela Griggs of Pflugerville; 13 grandchildren Wendy Nicole Owens and husband Trevor, John Paul Chervenka and wife Jennifer, Tammy Hull and husband Dan, Tanya Joel, Stacey Glover and husband Corey, Tracey Chervenka and Jerome Stowers, Matthew Sebek and wife Amanda, Veronica Youngblood and husband Joshua, Sterling Sebek and wife Melissa, Candice Henderson and husband Jeremy, Jordan Sebek and wife Emily, Shea Sebek, and Ty Sebek; 31 great-grandchildren - Trey Owens, Scarlett Owens, Sophie Glover, Case Joel, Sarah Stowers, Jessica Chervenka, Savannah Sebek, Kade Sebek, Jacelyn Chervenka, Hunter Henderson, Lane Glover, Annabelle Denise, Ford Joel, Joanna Chervenka, Carsyn Sebek, Braidyn Youngblood, Story Hull, Raeley Sebek, Hannah Stowers, Jaidyn Chervenka, Maecie Sebek, Camryn Henderson, Blaize Youngblood, Andrew Youngblood, Jaxon Sebek, Laela Sebek, Brityn Youngblood, Jacob Chervenka, Blake Youngblood, Connor Sebek, and Brooks Sebek.

She lived in the Red Ranger community with her parents who owned the Red Ranger Grocery Store. She attended Red Ranger School until her sophomore year when Red Ranger consolidated with Rogers High School. While attending Rogers High, she was on the basketball team and was vice president of her junior class. She graduated in May 1946. After graduation, she attended business college and worked at the Blue Bonnet Café as a waitress. Later she got a job with Brodies Insurance. After she married, she worked at Anthony’s Department Store in downtown Temple.

Later, while raising her family, she worked at Red Ranger Grocery Store, which was owned by her sister Louise.

She was also a substitute teacher at Rogers ISD. Her first love was being a wife and mother.

Joe and Bernice lived many different places living with relatives because there were not many places to rent with Fort Hood just opening and all the soldiers and families moving here. They lived at the TemBell Homes (a government apartment house connected with the McClosky Hospital, now known as the VA). Homes also included one in the Little Flock community, an apartment on North 15th Street in Temple, and finally, the family home they built on Red Ranger Road in August 1954.

Bernice became a faithful member of Ocker Brethren Church on her wedding day and rededicated her life at a revival service in 1963. At Ocker, she was a member of the Mutual Aide Society, a Sunday School teacher, Cradle Roll Director and nursery attendant, member of the Christian Sisters, and helped during Bible School.

Bernice was a member of SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone, receiving her 75year pin. She was very active in the lodge serving as reporter, secretary, and chairperson for many different activities and served on the board through the years.

Bernice’s first love was her family – her husband of 53 years, 10 months, and 16 days; her children; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed going to their activities, especially sporting events they were involved in. Her favorite hobbies were taking pictures of her family and creating albums for each of the families and playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Lodge 48, Beyersville Youth Club supports Texas Critter Crusaders

Lodge 48, Beyersville Youth Club members donated $100 to Texas Critter Crusaders on Saturday, June 30, 2018. The money will go towards vaccinations and microchipping pets in order to go to their forever homes.

Youth club members also helped give the dogs a well deserved walk that morning with the help of Lodge 48 President Robert Leshikar.

Eat healthy at the fair

Lodge 107, Floresville youth wins at District Seven YAD I went to SPJST District Seven Youth Achievement Day (YAD) 2018 in Floresville, Texas. I got first place for merit points and top junior for District Seven.

I entered hobby kits, photography, handicraft, and constructed items. I placed in three of them. I like getting the money. I play games with my friends.

Fairs, carnivals, rodeos, and roving amusement parks are popular summer attractions. Rides and raffles may attract the majority of revelers, but fairs and carnivals also are great places to enjoy mouth-watering food.

Fried dough, meats on sticks, pretzels, cotton candy, cheesesteaks, and other aromas waft through the air at carnivals. However, fairs have not always been so great for people watching their calories. And while fairs might not be diet-friendly, it’s not impossible to adhere to one’s diet while visiting the fair.

Fill up at home.

Prior to heading out to the fair, be sure to eat a filling, healthy breakfast.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics says that mild dehydration produces similar symptoms to hunger. If you feel hungry after eating, your body may only need fluids and not food.

Therefore, reach for water or a hydrating sports drink (particularly when it is hot outside) as a first step to abating hunger symptoms, especially if you’ve recently eaten.

Choose healthy food vendors.

Look for vendors that offer things like yogurt cups, roasted vegetables, lean meats, and fresh fruits. Kabobs that include lean meats that are low in calories can make a great carnival meal.

Corn on the cob without gobs of butter also can be a filling snack. Smart dessert options include fruit smoothies, water ice, frozen yogurt, and even a candied apple, which may be rich in fiber. A small dose of cotton candy, which is just 100 calories per ounce, can offer a sweet fix while you avoid deep-fried concoctions. Keep in mind that cheese curds can set you back 650 calories and a funnel cake 720 calories, according to the YMCA. It can take several miles of traversing the fair to burn all those calories.

Before you fill up on lemonade, remember some beverages contain lots of calories. Weigh your options carefully.

If you want a giant cold soda, you may need to skip that chocolate-covered banana.

LIT Camp June 15-17, 2018 camp kubena ledbetter, Texas

VĚSTNÍK The 2018 SPJST Leaders-In-Training Camp was held Friday, June 15 to Sunday, June 17, 2018, at Camp Kubena in Ledbetter, Texas. The theme was “Out of this World with SPJST!” Group names were Antares, Canopus, Pleiades, Rigel, Sirius, and Vega.

LITs arrived on Friday between 1 and 2 p.m. for registration. At 2 p.m., LITs gathered for a welcome, introductions, and review of camp rules. LITs then participated in several afternoon activities.

After dinner, LITs met at the pool/pavilion for swim tests, pool safety instruction, and recreation time. The day ended with the evening táborák (campfire).

On Saturday, June 16, LITs met at the

Breakfast followed.

The groups then rotated between high ropes - learning about proper harness fitting and participating in the elements - and pavilion - learning proper skills for low rope elements.

Lunch was served after a prayer and flag ceremony.

Mike Spiller, known as “The Doctor of Fun,” presented a workshop on Rainy Day and Cabin Games with an emphasis on international games.

The game of Organized Mass Chaos followed along with swim and free time.

Supreme Lodge Chairman/District One Director Donnie Victorick provided supper after the evening prayer.

After dressing for the evening dance,

LITs gathered at the flag pole for the evening ceremony. The dance began with the traditional Grand March.

LITs began the final day on Sunday, June 17 with a flag ceremony and prayer before breakfast.

Graduated high school seniors were recognized after the vesper service/devotional. The 2018 LITs received certificates and camp tee-shirts for their efforts throughout the weekend workshop.

Camp Kubena Executive Director Jeb Lapeyrolerie delivered a special message to the LITs and announced the top LIT winners.

Participants then packed their belongings, cleaned the cabins, and said good-byes until the next SPJST event.

Thanks to the 2018 Leaders-InTraining for participating in the program. And a special thanks to the District Youth Counselors, Assistant District Youth Counselors, and adult chaperones for their assistance throughout the weekend. Thanks to Camp Kubena and staff for a great weekend!

Zpráva ze schůze řádu Jaromír č. 54 ve Westu, Tx. Jan Vaculík, česky píšící dopisovatel.

Slavnostní červnová schůze řádu Jaromír SPJST číslo 54 ve Westu, Tx. se konala dne 1. června 2018 v síni svatého Josefa při osadě Nanebevstoupení Panny Marie ve Westu, Tx. za poměrně hojné účasti členstva a hostů.

President řádu Freddie Kaluža zahájil schůzi, která měla slavnostní ráz, protože se měly předávat odznaky za padesátileté členství u jednoty. Složili jsme přísahu vlajce a republice, pro kterou stojí. Tajemnice Janice Kaluža pře četla zápis z minulé schůze a byl přijat tak, jak byl čten. Naše finanční tajemnice Mary Lou Mynář přečetla její pěknou finanční zprávu a bankovní obnosy se pěkně zvětšují. Česky píšící dopisovatel Jan Vaculík podotkl, že se léto blíží a co nevidět se teploty budou pohybovat kolem stovky stupňů F. Přijali jsme nové členy, většinou převody do jiných řádů. President Kaluža poděkoval členům, kteří pracovali v Domově důchodců ve Westu za jejich obětavou práci a oznámil, že pracuje na několika případech, kdy bude potřeba změnit způsob pojištění, protože úroky jsou nyní velmi nízké.

Synek Floyda D. Wolfa Coleman Robert obdržel stipendium od naší jednoty do Technické university a presi dent Kaluža oznámil, že je rád, že náš řád má čtyři studenty, kteří použijí stipendium pro vysoškolské studium v příštím roce. President 3. okrsku John Engelke pochválil takový počet uchazečů o stipendia a doporučil každému uchazeči, aby si požádal o stipendium z jednoty a to i osoby, kterí nejsou mladého věku. Stipendium bude uděleno každému zájemci bez rozdlu věku, starší členové a členky mohou studovat stejně dobře jako mladší členstvo.

tavou práci pro náš řád. President 3. okrsku John Engelke jim předal diplom.

V téže době také byly předány diplomy sestře Johnnye Caralou Young and Floydovi D. Wolfovi, kteří jsou u naší jednoty 50 let. President řádu Freddie Kaluža připomenul některé zajímavosti, události a osobnosti z roku 1968, zvláště cena galonu bensinu byla kolem 30 centů. Důležitou událstí toho roku byl také můj přílet do Californie z Evropy, právě v roce 1968 jsem začal novou stránku života na svobodné straně oceánu.

President 3. okrsku John Engelke nás povzbudil k další práci a jako ceny pro

losování přinesl čepice a jiné praktické věci. Ukončili jsme schůzi a před slavnostní večeří jsme se pomodlili americky i česky, jak je naším zvykem.

Večeře byla výborná, pečené maso nad otevřeným ohněm a všechny další pochoutky. Po večeři jsme se všichni bavili do pozdních večerních hodin.

A meeting to begin preparations for Heritage Day is set for Wednesday, July 18 at Sokol Hall Dallas at 7 p.m. So if you can, please bring your ideas for the festivities, and let’s discuss our plans and start early! Early bird gets the worm so we will not be stressed in getting everything together.

From Communist Czechoslovakia to Freedom in America Texas Czech Genealogical Society will welcome Peter Vodenka, nationally acclaimed author and inspirational speaker, to its summer conference, “Life is a Journey, Not a Destination,” on Saturday, July 21, 2018, where he will be the keynote speaker. The event will be held at the Caldwell Civic/Visitors’ Center, 103 West Highway 21, Caldwell, Texas, beginning with registration and light refreshments at 8 a.m. The event ends around 4 p.m.

Imagine life without the right to travel, without freedom of speech or without being able to choose your occupation. Peter Vodenka lived that life for many years before escaping communism to find a new home in America. He will relate in detail the harrowing experience he and his family endured and the feeling of exhilaration that they felt when they set foot on American soil, where they would experience the American dream, built on hard work and love of country.

His passion now is to implore Americans to respect their freedoms and stop taking them for granted . . . He reminds his audience that America is the greatest nation on earth; his belief is based not through book reading or study, but through what he has lived.

This will be Peter’s first visit to Texas. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear him speak and to purchase his book, Journey for Freedom, which will be available for sale at the event.

Other speakers will be Clint Williams and Gladys Valchar. Gladys will describe her “bucket list” trip to the land of her ancestors, which lasted six weeks rather than the two she had signed up

Mr. Clint William, webmaster of the Texas Research Ramblers Genealogical Society will discuss “Helping Others Get Restarted on Their Genealogical Journey.” Who hasn’t come upon that “brick wall” where family research has just stopped because of no visible clues on where to turn next? Come hear Clint explain how to get around that brick wall and to proceed on your research journey.

TCGS will hold a silent auction and will have its sales table available, laden with TCGS publications and gift items,

including lovely Legend Christmas Ornaments.

CHS Summer State Meeting, Genealogy Conference July 28 Czech Heritage Society of Texas will hold its summer state meeting and genealogy conference - with a dance celebration afterwards - on Saturday, July 28, 2018. The event will be held at St. Joseph Parish Activity Center, 507 East 26th Street, Bryan, Texas (behind the church).

All activities are free of charge. Registration is at 8 a.m. with opening ceremonies beginning at 8:30 a.m. The genealogy conference and state meeting will take place in the morning.

Activities scheduled for the youth are stories of Czech legends for ages 5 and up; the Czech movie Krtek for ages 5 and up; and dance instruction for youth ages 10 and up.

A Czech Traveling Library will be available throughout the day. There will also be a silent auction and vendor booths.

Enjoy an afternoon dance for everyone from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. with music by the Praha Brothers.

A catered lunch will be served for a cost. If pre-registered and paid by Saturday, July 14, lunch cost is $11 for adults and $7 for children (ages 12 and under). If paying for lunch at the door, adults are $12 and children (ages 12 and

Parents must pre-register youth and provide their age for activity-planning purposes.
