ast year, I had the pleasure to visit Betty Ross’ house in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I am pictured above in the upholstery shop with “Betsy Ross,” one of the volunteers at the house that welcomes more than 250,000 visitors each year. Betsy Ross (1752-1836) is credited with making the first stars and stripes flag. She was a successful upholsterer who produced flags for the government for more than 50 years. As a skilled artisan, Betsy represents the many women who supported their families during the Revolution and early Republic.

Betsy never owned the house, but rented it between the years of 1773 and 1786. The house was built about 1740 and consists of 3-1/2 floors and six rooms plus an attic. Betsy and her husband John Ross lived there and ran their upholstery business out of the house as well.

The flag pictured depicts the first stars and stripes and is displayed in Betsy’s bedroom, where she made her flags. A sign in the room says, “In Betsy Ross’ time, no United States Flag Code existed. We chose to display the flag in this manner to give an accurate representation of what it would be like to stitch a large, bulky, 10-foot flag, a common size in the 18th century. In compliance with the modern Flag code, there is cloth underneath the flag keeping it off the floor.”

Sincere Sympathy We extend heartfelt sympathy to Mortgage Loan Processor Ann Paruzinski whose mother Anna Marie Matl Paruzinski, 92, of Belton passed away on Wednesday, May 30. Mrs. Paruzinski’s service was held Tuesday, June 5 at Christ the King Catholic Church in Belton. Burial was at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Cyclone.

wjyb Good Eats byjw Sour Cream Apple Cake 2 cups flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg 3 teaspoons cinnamon, divided 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 cup (1 stick) softened butter 1 cup sugar 2 large eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 8 ounces sour cream 8 Tablespoons chopped walnuts or almonds 2 medium apples, chopped (about 2 cups) 1/2 cup brown sugar Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a bundt pan with nonstick spray.

Combine flour, salt, nutmeg, and 2 teaspoons of cinnamon in a medium bowl. Stir in baking soda and baking powder, and set aside.

Mix softened butter and sugar in a separate mixing bowl until a creamy

consistency forms. Beat in eggs, one at a time, combining until creamy. Add vanilla and sour cream, and mix until well blended.

Sift in dry ingredients, beating the mixture on low speed to form a batterlike consistency. Fold in chopped nuts and apples, stirring gently to evenly distribute.

Pour the batter into a bundt pan.

Sprinkle evenly with brown sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Bake for 50 to 65 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Turn cake onto serving plate after cooling in pan for 20 to 30 minutes.

Serve warm with your favorite toppings.

As in years past, SPJST rooms have been blocked at the Emerald Beach Hotel in Corpus Christi. Please make every effort to reserve your rooms early. There are 120 rooms set aside for the event.

Flag Day — June 14 The week of June 14 is designated as National Flag Week. During National Flag Week, the President will issue a proclamation urging United States citizens to fly the American flag for the duration of that week. In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened that day by resolution of the Second Continental Congress in 1777.

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day. In August 1949, an Act of Congress established National Flag Day. Please take a few moments of this date to pause and recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our Flag; and we

Father’s Day - June 17 A big driving force behind the establishment of the integration of Father’s Day was Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd, born in Creston, Washington. Her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent raising his six children in Spokane, Washington. Mrs. Dodd initially suggested June 5, the anniversary of her father’s death to celebrate Father’s Day. She did not provide the organizers with enough time to make arrangements, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June. The first June Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington.

Unofficial support from such figures as William Jennings Bryan was immediate

and widespread. President Woodrow Wilson was personally feted by his family in 1916. President Calvin Coolidge recommended it as a national holiday to be celebrated on the third Sunday of June. Lodge 47, Seaton Barbecue Cookoff set for July 20-21 We are getting ready for SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton’s 26th Annual Barbecue Cookoff on Friday, July 20 and Saturday, July 21, 2018, at Seaton Star Hall, which is seven miles east of Temple on Highway 53.

Categories are brisket, chicken, pork ribs, beans, bloody mary, and margarita.

Entry fees are $100 (regardless of number of barbecue categories - brisket, chicken, and pork ribs); $10 entry fee to participate in the bean cookoff; $10 entry fee to participate in the bloody mary contest; and $10 entry fee to participate in the margarita contest.

Wednesday, June 13, 2018 Awards will be presented, and $2,500 is the guaranteed prize money. Awards will be presented for the first 10 places in each barbecue category (brisket, chicken, and pork ribs). Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three winners in each category. Beans: 40-30-20-split.

Bloody Mary: 40-30-20-split. Margarita: 40-30-20-split. A “Best Pit” trophy will also be awarded.

Electrical and water hook-ups are available. This is a C.T.B.A. (Central Texas Barbecue Association) quadcities cookoff. However, you do not have to be a C.T.B.A. member to participate.

The sun is shining, things are getting hotter, and Camp Kubena is fully operational. Summer is officially here, and we couldn’t be more excited. After two weeks of training, our counselors are now fully certified in lifeguarding, high ropes, and even food handling.

It’s been a busy two weeks, but now that we’re finished, our family is prepared to make this summer the greatest ever.

It’s been a busy year of recruiting, but Staff Recruiter Whitten Shappel has assembled an especially gifted group of counselors.

Americans, Internationals, and even SPJST members make up a group of individuals who are more than just co-workers.

This summer, Camp Kubena has welcomed back staff from previous years. However, we’ve also welcomed staff who are experiencing their first year here as well as staff who are in America for the first time. From MexBrett made a motion to accept the report, and Linda seconded.

Michelle shared the youth club report.

The youth club is still planning a day at Austin’s Park ‘n Pizza. All youth helped out at the garage sale for Texas Critter Crusaders and will be getting shirts. They are still working on a planting day at the hall. Michelle advised the adult members that the youth club will not be getting a quarterly check due to low attendance for last quarter.

On top of receiving numerous certifications, the counselors were hard at work making sure the camp is looking its best. From painting, landscaping, and even installing our brand new blob in the blob pond, our team has been hard at work to ensure our campground is the best it can be for all our summer campers.

Now that the camp, its activities, and staff are fully prepared and operational, we are diving headfirst into summer, and have welcomed our first group of the season. With SPJST Leaders-In-Training (LITs), all of the SPJST camps, KJT, and KJZT campers arriving in the next few weeks, we couldn’t be more excited to get things started and make this summer the best yet!

On Sunday, May 20, 2018, Lodge 79, Corpus Christi celebrated a belated Mother’s Day with chicken and beef fajitas. After the delicious meal, the meeting was called to order by President Mark Rebecek. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and we had a moment of silence for deceased members Cyril M. Stastney, Sr. and Guadalupe Lopez. All officers were present, and we had 30 members and guests in attendance.

President Rebecek introduced guests Jim and Louise Koutney and Valarie Barta from Lodge 202, Jourdanton.

Valarie gave a nice talk about the S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living Centers.

Secretary Virginia Rebecek read the April minutes, and Treasurer Frank Sacky gave the financial report. They were both approved.

Under communication, Secretary Rebecek read both death claims, and she announced two new sales agents - Gracie Hoyt-Morris and Dorothy Carrillo.

Sales Agent Lilah Deleon spoke about how her sales are going.

Vice President/FAC Jerry Sijansky gave the FAC report. He stated Lodge 79 had 18 new certificates, the Weekend Getaway was back on in Corpus Christi, and Lodge 79 will bake kolaches for the Getaway. Jerry handed out financial planning booklets and also discussed celebrating Memorial Day. The fall district meeting will be October 21 with Lodge 79 as host.

Lodge 51, Ellinger hosts SPJST Float in Tomato Festival Parade Lodge 51, Ellinger hosted the SPJST Float in the Ellinger Tomato Festival Parade on Sunday, May 27, 2018. The meeting was called to order at 2:25 p.m. by President Keith Kieschnick. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Flag Bearer Zoe Saxton. A moment of silence was held for departed member Oscar Shank. May he rest in peace.

Roll call of officers showed all present. We had 40 members and eight guests - Tammy Payne, Bryan Lewis, Jenn Lewis, Khloe Neal, Allen Miller, Janice Comberrel, District Five Youth Counselor Barbara Linney-Gonzales, and District Five Director Bradley Stavinoha.

Secretary Elizabeth Hermis read the April minutes. Financial Secretary/Treasurer Mary Ann Kieschnick read the April financials. Both reports were approved as read.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Pat Schleider gave a beautiful presentation and cake - along with members and youth - for 75-year member Daniel Kubin and 50-year members Elsie Hermis, Barbara Jasek, Georgie Langenegger, Gregory Machac, Ronald Machac, Kelly Smith, and Ann Wilganowski.

Correspondence was a letter on Join Hands Day and food bank donations.

Youth Leader Manchack reported Dennis Hermis, Jason Hermis, Kerry Herrington, J.R. Coleman, Amanda Muzny, and Catherine Manchack attended the April 29 camp chaperone training.

Several adults and youth attended the Sam Houston Folk Festival in Huntsville on May 19. Members also participated in Join Hands Day at Houston Food Bank on Saturday, May 5.

Fraternal Activities Report Fraternal Activities Coordinator Pat Schleider reported that the Corpus Christi Getaway will be held Friday, August 10 to Sunday, August 12, and more details will follow in the Vestnik.

All mothers were asked to stand in observance of Mother’s Day. The member referral card program is still in progress.

Sick committee report included Mary Jane Hue still in rehab, Jack Manchack, Mo Dunn, Rosie Malota, and Bill Gaddy out ill.

New business was we were extended an invitation to Lodge 88, Houston’s Homecoming on June 3, and the Corpus Christi Getaway.

Lodge 180, Burleson hosts successful helping hands project Lodge 180, Burleson held its monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 5, 2018, at Burleson Police Department.

The meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a moment of silent prayer for all of those in need which included all of our military, protection organizations, and those with individual needs.

All lodge officers were present for the meeting with Patricia and Robert Sill of Lodge 183, Arlington visiting with us. It is always such a pleasure to have them with us at our meetings. They shared that the upcoming District Three Youth Achievement Day (YAD) will be taking place at their home lodge in Arlington on Saturday, June 23 with an invitations for us to attend. (Editor’s Note: More information about District Three YAD is on page 16 in a letter from District Three Youth Counselor Mary Steinman.)

Attending a lodge meeting . . . like a “homecoming” A few of our members were not present, and they were greatly missed as always. To me, being able to attend a lodge meeting is kind of like a “homecoming.” Phone calls are great, but having the opportunity to be close and visit in person is much, much better.

Helping Hands Project Our meeting mostly centered around our recent visit to Trinity Mission Health and Rehab Center in Burleson. Our lodge chose this site as our “helping hands” outreach for the year. I was so thankful to have such an industrious group of people to help with this project.

lodge members as well as the recipients of our visit and our token gifts that were presented to each resident.

I relayed my feelings about our visit to the lodge, and each member that participated in the visit did so as well. To summarize the comments in a few words . . . very nice and enjoyable with pleasures of being able to spend some time with each resident. Carmon Babina said that several asked her if we would be coming back, and one resident said that he had five children, but they never came to see him. Even though we were not his children, we were able to put a little light into his soul with our visit.

We had a discussion later of a visit with them again in the future, probably in the early fall just to let them know that they had not been forgotten. I discovered that we have a piano player in our midst, and knowing how much older folks like to sing old songs, I think that might happen in our later visit.

The minutes from previous two meetings were read and approved as well as the financial report to bring us current in the business of reports.

Our monthly contribution from the lodge and Joe Babina will be sent to Scottish Rite Hospital. The two door prizes were won by Red Kelly to Chili’s and Leon Flusche to IHOP. Our dining place after the next meeting will be Moon Tower Pizza in Burleson. I am looking so forward to a great pizza with anchovies. Sorry folks, just can’t help it!

After adjournment of the meeting, we went to The Catch, which is relatively a new eatery in Burleson. As the name implies, you have a wide choice of different items of seafood as well as other items for the non-fish lover. Delicious foods and a birthday celebration happened there.

I was told at a previous gathering that since Joe B. had a chance to order what type of cake he wanted for his birthday

celebration, that First Vice President Joe Hurtik felt that he should have the same opportunity! With his Czech heritage, I should not have been surprised to hear him say that he did not want a cake but would prefer kolaches. Naturally, I chided him on this. Needless, to say, Joe got his kolaches for his birthday with a variety to choose from. You can see by the photo, that we did not want to divulge his number of years, thus the question marks! Happy, happy birthday, Joe! June birthday celebrants are Brandi Holder, Joe Hurtik, Jr., Dana Yates, Jerry Mabry, Theresa Levi, Philip Psencik, Fayette Tankersley, and Susan Hejl.

Many happy wishes go out to these folks with many more in their futures.

We, the members of SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sincere sympathy to the family of HERMAN RAY PILGRIM. Herman Ray Pilgrim, 77, of El Campo, Texas, passed away Sunday, June 3, 2018.

He was born September 27, 1940, in Houston to the late Howard Shelby Pilgrim and Velda Olice Martin Pilgrim. Ray graduRay Pilgrim ated from El Campo High School in 1958 and was a real estate broker.

He is survived by wife Jacquelyn King Pilgrim of El Campo; sons Alan Pilgrim of Beeville and Jeff Pilgrim and wife Michelle of Fulshear; grandchildren Jordan Ross Pilgrim, Kaelyn Rose Smith and Sean Michael Pilgrim; and brothers Clinton Shelby Pilgrim of Danevang and Larry Howard Pilgrim of Alvin.

Family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 6 at Triska Funeral Home. Funeral service was at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 7 at First Baptist Church with Reverend Rick DuBroc officiating. Burial followed at Oaklawn Memorial Park.

Pallbearers were Jordan Ross Pilgrim, Sean Michael Pilgrim, Clinton Sean Pilgrim, Jeffrey Williams, Jimmy Huey, Brian Seaman, and Brian Dorotik.

Honorary pallbearers were Jim Baros, Hubert Kaiser, Pat Cunningham, Johnny Faltisek, Daniel Holub, Noel Fuller Jr., Art Janke, Ray Gerla, and Wade Klimple.

Memorial donations in memory of Ray may be made to First Baptist Church Vacation Bible School Fund.

Lodge 151 is going to miss Ray Pilgrim. Ray served as second vice president, sales agent, and chaplain of Lodge 151 for many years. He spent his life helping others. We will miss his friendship and sense of humor.

We, the members of SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the family of EDMUND J. “ED” SABRSULA, JR. Edmund “Ed” Joe Sabrsula, Jr. passed away peacefully on Monday, May 28, 2018, in his home in Richmond, Texas, surrounded by his family. He was born in his family’s Hungerford home on December 17, 1937, to Edmund Joe and Vlasta Ed Sabrsula, Jr. Sabrsula.

He grew up in Hungerford and attended the University of Houston, majoring in communications.

After college, he returned to Hungerford and worked in the family business where, while serving as attendants at a local family wedding, he met his beloved wife Bernice Ann Vacek Sabrsula. Less than a year later, they were married in the East Bernard Holy Cross Church in 1959.

Ed proudly served in the United States Army at home and abroad and after his military service returned to work in the family Hungerford business.

A short time later, he moved his family to Houston where he served as director of advertising for a supermarket chain.

He then went on to work for a wellknown national department store chain as the regional director of advertising.

In the early 1980s, he opened his own advertising and brokerage agency and remained there until he and Bernice decided to embark upon another business venture.

While Bernice worked for Schlumberger, she helped Ed start up an extremely popular food catering company serving corporate and private functions entertaining and feeding people from around the world. Together they enjoyed catering intimate gourmet dinner parties for groups into the hundreds.

Bernice and Ed loved to travel and visited all 50 states in the United States plus 15 foreign countries including Italy and the Holy Land of Israel. They enjoyed concerts, theater, dining out, and entertaining with family and friends.

Ed’s great passion for music and powerful singing voice afforded him the opportunity to perform in as many as 35 choirs and groups including the Houston Symphony Chorus, Houston Pops, Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston Choir, and many others.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton.

He is survived by his beloved wife Bernice; son Russell and his children Richard and Michaela; son Randall and wife Kristen Dixon Sabrsula and daughter Amber; son Rodney Sabrsula and extended family Loli Fulton and her children Chela, Seth, and Emma; brother-in-law J.J. Smolik; numerous nephews, nieces, great-nephews and nieces; Uncle Adolph and Aunt Lydia Sablatura; and a large number of cousins, other relatives, and dear friends.

In his final days, he was happy to devote his efforts to the research of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), with the goal of helping others.

A rosary was at 7 p.m., Friday, June 1 at Joseph J. Earthman Generations in Houston. Mass of Christian burial was at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 2 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford. The rite of committal followed at St. John’s Cemetery.

Her current employment was with Bluebonnet Electric in Giddings for almost 25 years.

Melissa taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. She served on the Round Top Carmine Education Foundation Board. She was on the stewardship committee and the church council at Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Carmine. She was a member of Round Top Hermann Sons Life Lodge No. 151.

She was a member of SPJST Lodge 179, Warrenton, where she served as secretary/treasurer. She enjoyed photography, quilting, traveling, fishing, her annual cousin’s weekend, and spending time with close friends.

She is survived by mother Ora Lee Wickel Levien; sister and brother-in-law Melba and Randy Zingelmann; nieces Brandy Zingelmann and Bridgette Ingram and husband J.P.; great-nephews Benjamin Swisher and Jaxton Ingram; great-nieces Bailey Swisher and Jolee Ingram; and many cousins and close friends.

She was preceded in death by her dad Melvin Wickel, stepdad Leroy Levien, grandparents, uncles, and aunts.

Clyde “Chief” Skrhak, age 85, of Taylor, Texas, passed away Saturday May 26, 2018.

Chief was proud of his service to his country. He was inducted into the Army on March 17, 1953, and served in the Korean War where he received the National Defense Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, and the Korean Service Medal. He later “Chief” Skrhak joined the Texas Army National Guard in Taylor as a cook where he was known for transforming army food to a delicious homestyle meal.

He was a lifelong member of Sydney Pierce VFW Post 4476; American Legion Graham D. Luhn Post 39; and SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor. He retired from the University of Texas at Austin as a carpenter and took pride in passing along his carpentry skills to his sons. He loved playing guitar, harmonica, and

Melissa was born November 15, 1963, to Melvin and Ora Lee Rohde Wickel. She was baptized and confirmed at Martin Luther Lutheran Church. Melissa graduated from Round Top Carmine High School in 1982. She graduated from Blinn College in 1984 and Sam Houston State University in 1986. She worked at Shepard Crane Engineering in Stafford for seven years.

Clyde was preceded in death by his brothers Rudy Skrhak, Daniel Skrhak, and Edward Skrhak; sister Evelyn Motloch; and son Clement Frank Skrhak.

He is survived by wife Dorothy Mokry Skrhak; children Terry Skrhak, Deborah Marek and husband Harold, Randy Skrhak and wife Stacy, and Kevin Skrhak; grandchildren Gracie Skrhak and Bailey Skrhak; and sisters Annie Loeve and Lillie Bonkowski.

Visitation was Friday, June 1 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Condra Funeral Home with a rosary at 7 p.m. Mass was Saturday, June 2 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Burial followed at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to Sydney Pierce VFW Post 4476.

Leaders-In-Training Retreat 2018 The time has arrived! The Leaders-InTraining Retreat will be at Camp Kubena on Friday, June 15 to Sunday, June 17.

Registration will be from 1 to 2 p.m. on Friday. This will give LITs the opportunity to acquire some great skills. This year, we will be welcoming back team-

builder Mike Spiller. He will be introducing you to some new ice breakers and fun camp songs. On top of having a great time getting to know each other, LITs will also learn what their responsibilities are at camp all while having some fun with their peers! All new LITs must attend this event in order to be eligible to assist with their district’s summer camping season.

I have provided a list of items that you will need to pack for the LIT retreat.

Please make sure that you bring these items with you. Again, you will need to bring a water bottle. Each youth participating in camp and LIT will need to bring a water bottle that is clearly marked with their name.

Camp Dress Code During your stay at SPJST Summer Camp, we want you to have the best experience possible. SPJST has developed the following dress code to assure that no one will feel offended or uncomfortable during his/her stay. Please be advised that the following dress code will be enforced for all individuals attending camp, including staff, counselors, and chaperones.

1. Clothing: All clothing shall be neat, clean, and acceptable in repair and appearance and shall be worn within the bounds of decency and good taste as appropriate for SPJST events.

2. Articles of clothing which display profanity, products, or slogans which promote tobacco, violence, alcohol, drugs, sex, or are in any other way distracting, are prohibited.

3. Excessively baggy, short, or tight clothing, and clothing which advertises gang symbols or affiliation is prohibited.

Please be advised that spaghetti straps, shirts which expose a bare back, halter tops, and tube tops are prohibited.

5. Swimming (for all water recreation) Swimsuits for men: Swim trunks only (No shorts, cut-off pants, or Speedos).

Swimsuits for women: One-piece suits recommended, however, two-piece suits are allowed as long as they are modestly cut. No string, thong, or crochet suits will be allowed. Swimsuits may only be worn during swimming activities.

According to SPJST Standards, if you choose to dress inappropriately, you will be asked to change or be required to wear a camp-issued shirt. By planning ahead and packing appropriately, you will save yourself the inconvenience of having to change, and you will be contributing to a pleasant camp atmosphere.

Camp Tee-Shirt Orders Still Available Camp tee-shirt order deadline for camp was June 1. You can still order camp tee- shirts through the Home Office Fraternal Department.

July Vestnik Project The July Vestnik Project will be about Space Volcanos. Purchase a dozen eggs, then boil them and refrigerate a couple of days before the meeting. Have the youth smell the eggs and talk about the smell. A volcano produces gases when erupting.

Milky Way Galaxy If you’re on a dark countryside hill some night, look up at the sky. Arcing overhead, a faint band of light may appear that looks like milk spilled across the sky. The ancient Romans called the band via lacteal, which means “milky road” or “milky way.”

The band of light that you see isn’t actually milk, of course— it’s a galaxy. A galaxy is a huge bunch of stars clustered together in space. Our solar system—which includes the sun, Earth, and seven other planets—is part of this galaxy, called … you guessed it … the Milky Way. The Milky Way contains hundreds of billions of stars like our sun. And like our sun, most of these stars have at least one planet orbiting them. Earth is located about halfway between the center of the Milky Way and its outer edge.

Light at the galaxy’s center takes 25,000 light-years to travel from Earth. (A light-year is the distance light travels in one year.)

So that means if you could see the core of the Milky Way, you’d be observing light that possibly left Earth before humans first settled in North America.

At the center of the Milky Way is one of the strangest and deadliest things in the universe: a black hole. Black holes are born when a giant star runs out of energy. The star implodes, causing an explosion called a supernova. The star’s heart collapses under its own weight. It’s squashed into a tiny dot you can’t see.

Two has 13 girls and seven boys registered. It will be a great experience for our teens to prepare for making a special impact in the lives of younger campers at our Districts Two/Six summer camp the following week.

Two days later, Wednesday, June 20 to Sunday, June 24, we begin our SPJST District Two Summer Camp with District Six. We are excited to have our friends from District Six with us again.

Camp registration will be held on Wednesday, June 20 from 6 to 7 p.m. All medications, over-the-counter included, must be turned in to Nurse Patricia and Jan. Parents, all medication must be in the original bottle with only the amount of medication needed for the camping period. Medication in bags cannot be accepted.

Parents are required to take home with them: all camper’s and LIT’s cell phones, SIM cards, and any electronic devices which include iPods, Nintendo DS, and MP3 players. If a camper has any of the above, parents will receive a phone call.

Please do not bring any expensive clothing. SPJST will not be responsible for any lost or damaged items. All cameras must be marked and turned in to the chaperone.

No food or drinks allowed in the cabins.

Things To Bring r A marked water bottle. Each camper will refill their bottle during the day. r Recommend: a marked small backpack to carry shoes, towels, etc. r 4 towels and 4 washcloths

Crocs are awesome. All campers, LITs, chaperones must wear these at all times. Flip flops are to wear only to the pool. r Beach towel r Non-menthol shaving cream – must be turned in at registration r Sunscreen r Flashlight r 5 changes of clothes r 5 changes of undergarments r Bag for dirty clothes r 2 - Swim suits and cover-ups (1 for the pool and 1 for the pond/lake) For younger campers, please make a note which is to be for the pond/pool. The chaperone will make sure they are kept separate. We want to be sure to keep the pool clean and clear.

Girls: A tee-shirt or tank top must be worn over the swimsuit in and out of pool. You may want to bring an extra pair of shorts to wear if you plan on blobbing.

Boys: A tee-shirt or tank top must be worn in and out of the pool.

Please refer to page 35 of the handbook to determine your dress for camp.

A suggestion for the younger campers: Place one days of clothing in a marked plastic bag. This helps getting ready in the early morning. Try to mark all clothing and belongings to be sure it comes home.

Here are a few of the activities planned:

Crafts • Swimming • Canoeing High/Low Ropes Course Blobbing at the Pond BB Guns/Archery • Horseshoes Games by the LITs and Staff Music and Dancing The only other thing I can think of to bring is a lot of energy and a great attitude for a lot of fun! One thing to hope for is enough time to do all the activities which are planned.

Again, thank you, parents, for allowing us to spend quality time with your youth. Every SPJST youth is special in his or her own way, and many memories are made each year at camp, and this year will be no exception.

A big thank you to all the chaperones who are taking time away from home and work to make sure our campers have a safe and a fun experience.

This is very exciting as we will get to renew friendships with District Three and make new ones with the campers of District Four.

Check-in time is on Wednesday evening, June 27 at 6 p.m., and we will have dinner shortly after check-in.

Please try to be on time as close to 6 p.m. so dinner isn’t delayed. We will check-in at the dining hall and turn in all medications, electronics, cell phones, etc.

Czech Youth, Family Day set for June 23 at TCHCC Czech Youth and Family Day will be held Saturday, June 23, 2018, at Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center, 250 West Fairgrounds Road, La Grange, Texas 78945. The event is sponsored by Czech Heritage Society and Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center.

Registration is at 9:30 a.m. in the TCHCC Lobby. Lunch will be $5 each.

So much fun for the whole family with lots of Polish culture, music, dancing, food, and drinks all on Main Street in downtown Bremond.

Friday night kicks off with a beauty pageant, polka and waltz dance contest, live music with the Praha Brothers, and much more.

Saturday starts with the famous Polish Pickle Run followed by the parade.

The rest of the day is filled with more music, games, vendors, and various activities for everyone.
