SPJST and Camp Kubena announce LEAD program for teen youth

SPJST and Camp Kubena are excited to announce an exclusive, new summer leadership program for SPJST youth members. This is an amazing opportunity to work with camp staff and with all SPJST District Camps. Each applicant will interview for an opening, but only 10 youth will be selected for the 2018 program.

The LEAD program is designed for SPJST youth that are at least 16 years of age who wish to develop into future paid camp counselors and who will help guide the next generation of SPJST

campers. During LIT Camp weekend (June 15 to 17, 2018), LEADers will participate with LITs in the LIT training program. The LEAD program will then continue until June 19 (making for a five-day LEAD training) that will prepare LEADers for their responsibilities during all SPJST camp sessions. “Melody George” Pavelka is still giving the gift of music

When local radio celebrity George Pavelka, a member of SPJST Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point, stopped by the Czech Heritage Museum recently, he asked if we would be interested in a few record albums. As in vinyl? You bet!

His trunk was full of his amazing collection of polka and Czech music on vintage vinyl.

For decades, Mr. Pavelka hosted “Polka Time” and “Czech Melody Hour,” on Sunday mornings at KTEM in Temple, Texas. It was just one of several side gigs that he worked after his full-time job as a construction supervisor. He also played in his family’s multi-generational band, was the announcer for Temple High School football games, and coached T-ball.

Mr. Pavelka’s great-grandfather immigrated from Czech Republic at age 12 and brought with him a love of music. He started the Pavelka Orchestra, which became a

family legacy. “My great-grandpa started it. He taught my grandpa and in turn, Grandpa taught all his kids. All my aunts played in the band at one time.

They all stayed and married my uncles.

My great-grandpa had a pretty good education in music. We all read music or played without it. It didn’t make any difference,” said Mr. Pavelka.

The Pavelka family’s music legacy has been celebrated by this Museum for many years. A 1901 brass tuba, is a featured instrument in our Czech music exhibit. It belonged to his grandfather.

When Mr. Pavelka came back in this week to bring some 8-track and cassette tapes (remember when those were new tech?), he sat down for a video interview. It’s available online at CzechHeritageMuseum.org on the Czech Heritage Museum Youtube channel and on the Czech Heritage Museum Facebook page.

Banana Bread

Bettie House Lodge 202, Jourdanton

2 cups flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 cup chopped nuts

In a mixing bowl cream together butter and sugar. Add eggs; beat well.

Mash bananas; add to creamed mixture, beat hard. Dissolve soda in buttermilk; add to above mixture. Add flour, salt, vanilla and nuts; blend.

Bake at 350 degrees 45-50 minutes or more in two greased and floured loaf pans. Test doneness: toothpick near center comes out clean. Cool on rack for 10 minutes. Remove from pans.

Yield: 2 loaves.

Call for Velehrad Volunteers

The first two volunteer workdays have been scheduled for Thursday, February 15 and Friday, February 16, 2018, in La Grange, Texas, to help get the historic SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad hall ready for its grand re-opening on May 19. All are welcome with a special need for volunteers with the ability to perform skilled carpentry, electrical work, and

painting. Activities will include general cleaning and making minor repairs. If you are interested in helping on February 15 and/or 16 or learning more about the Velehrad Project then please contact SPJST Foundation President Brian Vanicek at 254-534-2902. Additional workdays will be scheduled and posted in the Vestnik.

Volunteers are requested to help in preparing the Lodge 19, Velehrad hall for its upcoming grand re-opening in May.

Valentine’s Day a day to remember your loved ones and others!

Saint Valentine’s Day, better known simply as Valentine’s Day, is the annual commemoration of love celebrated on February 14. We’ve all had good Valentine’s Days, and . . . not so good. The notso-good could date back to middle school, when one anxiously awaited one of those sweetheart-pink carnations from what one hoped would be a secret admirer. Much to one’s dismay, the carnation never came.

We later came to realize that Valentine’s Day is about much more than flowers and candy. I like that there’s a day in our busy lives when we officially celebrate love. I’m not just talking romantic love, like Hallmark would have us believe, but the real-deal, universal “stuff of life” that makes up who we really are. Behind our roles and personalities and professionalism, each of us, at essence, is a living, loving being.

Call it spirit, call it sweetness — whatever you want to call it, we’ve all got it. It’s just a matter of what we do with it. So this Valentine’s Day, put the cupids and carnations and conversationhearts aside. Give of yourself, your time, your heart — to people you know, and people you don’t. Share your love in small ways and big. And best of all, be generous.

There are plenty of ways to do good and feel good this Valentine’s Day. Here are a few:

Will You Be My . . . Volunteer? There’s no shortage of ways you can help. Volunteer at a local soup kitchen, animal shelter, hospital, or favorite nonprofit.

Offer to tutor a child in reading or math.

You can find loads of opportunities on www.volunteermatch.org.

Reach Out to Those in Need. Deliver homemade Valentine’s cards or heartshaped cookies to the sick, the elderly, the homeless — and their caregivers.

Call a local children’s hospital, domestic violence shelter, or nursing home and ask how you can help.

Clean Your Closets. Get a head start on spring cleaning and donate clothes, toys, furniture, household items, and old computers to nonprofits accepting them.

Check your local Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Salvation Army, or Goodwill Industries.

Get Your Heart Pumping. Charity walks and runs raise money for a good cause and get you moving in the great outdoors. Bring the family or your coworkers along to make it a team event.

To find an event, check your local American Heart Association or your local runners’ clubs.

Celebrate with Small Acts of Kindness. Valentine’s Day isn’t the only holiday this week: February 12 to 18 is the 13th annual Random Acts of Kindness Week. What can you do?

Buy coffee, lunch, or a toll payment for the person behind you in line.

Tape the exact change for a soda to a vending machine.

Send cards with joyful messages to strangers. Collect canned goods for a food bank. Shovel a neighbor’s driveway or babysit — for free. Visit www.actsofkindness.org for hundreds of other ideas.

Save the Date: Saturday, May 5 SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration Make plans to join in the fun and festivities of the 2018 SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration to be held Saturday, May 5 at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall. Star Hall is located approximately seven miles east of Temple, just off Highway 53.

There will be cars! And more cars!

There will be Czech heritage displays, music, and entertainment. Admission is free. Donations and proceeds generated from event underwriters as well as from the silent and live auctions will benefit the SPJST Foundation.

100 Pennies Scholarship Drive October 1 started the SPJST 100 Pennies Drive to benefit the scholarship fund. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education.

Donations of any amount will be accepted and added to the general scholarship fund that is maintained by the Home Office. No amount is too small or too large. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive will run through March 31, 2018. So keep sending in your pennies!

Calendar of Events Please remember to mark your calendars for the 2018 SPJST State Tournaments. Again this year’s state tournaments will be held at the SPJST Home Office. Entry for the tournaments will be $10 for members and non-members. There will be Czech pastries in the morning, a catered meal for the participants during the noon hour, and fun and fellowship. Tournament dates are Saturday, March 3 for Straight Dominoes and Saturday, April 7 for Regular 42 Dominoes.

Mildred David achieves Grand Age of 96

SPJST congratulates Sister Mildred David of Lodge 18, Elgin, celebrates her 96th birthday on January 31, 2018. As such, Sister David is entitled to all SPJST member benefits with no further dues or assessments.

Mildred was born to John and Angelina Ozymy in Ennis, Texas. She had two sisters, Ella Mae Faraizl and Albina Vrla, both now deceased.

Sister Mildred married Ben O. David on September 7, 1946, in Dallas. They were blessed with three children, Ron David of Humble, Nancy Kelsheimer (Steve) of Richmond, and Connie David of Arlington, and two grandchildren, Lindsey Kelsheimer of Dallas and Derek Kelsheimer (Sarah) of Katy.

The Wednesday, January 3, 2018, SPJST Lodge 9, Snook meeting was called to order by President Donnie Hejl at 7 p.m. Emily Hejl led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was observed for Ronald Sebesta and LeeRoy Lednicky. Roll of officers was called. Minutes from the December meeting were approved as read.

Mildred and Ben were members of SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas for many years when they retired and moved to Lakeway, near Austin. They transferred their membership to Lodge 18, Elgin, where Mildred has been for many years. They loved to go dancing and doing the polka up until Ben died in 2004. Mildred still enjoys playing golf and is a huge fan of the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Tech football teams.

Again, we congratulate Mildred David on attaining the grand age of 96. Thank you, Sister Mildred, for your devotion to our SPJST Society for all these years. May God bless you.

New Year’s Eve had terrible weather; however, with our presale tickets and the hearty people who showed up, we were able to make a profit and pay the band well for the night. The dance the night before turned out really well with a surprise turnout.

We donated to the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive.

The big dance on January 20 was a large part of the meeting. Linda Wilde has worked hard on this project. We had around 500 people in attendance and the lodge appreciates everyone who bought tickets and came to see this show.

Scholarship applications must be at the Home Office by February 1.

The Red Ravens will be at Flag Hall on Saturday, February 17. Please make plans now to be in attendance.

The tarok tournament is Saturday, February 3 at the Home Office in Temple.

This year’s 50-year members are Keith Andel, David Bedrich, Alois Buckholt, La Rite Cartwright, Christopher Williams, and Starky Winnett. The 75-year members are Bonnie Lee Cabla, Woodrow Glenn Chervenka, Olga Christy, Vallie Goeke, Sharon Hollas, Shirley Kelarek, and Clifton Vasek.

We were saddened by the loss of Kenny McNeill and Bob Kasburg’s daughter.

Lodge 25, Ennis sets Feb. 17 fundraiser

Dear Readers, I am reporting this week as a follow up to my January monthly report. In my last letter, I mentioned that we are in the planning stage for our annual building fundraiser. It is this annual event which funds the beautiful renovations you have seen happening at our lodge over the recent years. The date is set for Saturday, February 17, 2018.

Indoor Cornhole Tournament The fun will begin with an indoor cornhole tournament which is scheduled from 3 to 6 p.m. The tournament is limited to 48 people.

Music and Food We will have live music by local band Lost Money playing classic country music from 6 p.m. to 12 midnight.

Admission for the dance is $10. The kitchen will be open 6 to 8 p.m. serving a full plate smoked barbecue meal with all the trimmings and homemade desserts.

Donations Welcome We are taking donations for the live and silent auctions. We have collected several wonderful items so far. We are also collecting scratch-off tickets for the lotto tree. You can help us fill the tree by donating one, or more, tickets of any denomination.

I feel certain all of you had a wonderful Christmas and New Year’s with family and friends. And we’re coming up on Valentine’s Day already – looks like another fast year! I truly believe “the older you get – the faster time goes by.”

And with time going by so fast, it is very important for all of us to take time to spend with our loved ones – time seems to get more precious every day.

Lodge 35, Elk reports on December meeting

President Randy Pavelka called the SPJST Lodge 35, Elk and Elk Hall meetings to order on Wednesday, January 10, 2018, at 6:54 p.m.

Secretary Carla Price read the minutes from the December meetings and with a correction, the minutes were approved as read. Carla read a thank you note from Joe George Tepe.

Treasurer Barbara Pavelka gave her December meeting reports, and with no corrections, they were approved as read.

There were no reports from Floor Chairman Gene Pavelka or Bar Chairman Randy Pavelka.

District Three Director John Engelke spoke to us about some issues that members had been asking about. We are always glad to have him and his wife Diana come and visit with us and also install our 2018 officers.

Fraternally, Patsy Koslovsky, Reporter —SPJST— We had good food and door prizes, but only a few were there to enjoy SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin Open House on Tuesday, December 19, 2017. Thank you to District Two Director Jesse Pospisil and wife Linda for bringing prizes and installing the 2018 officers.

We did away with the regular meeting so we could visit with the guests and members who were there. We had many compliments on how great the hall looked.

It’s hard to believe that 2017 is history, and a new year begins. We hope that 2018 will bring old friends back to the lodge. So many have died who were active when Johnny and I joined. We would like to have known more of the founding members of this great lodge. We try to do for the community to keep up the great work of SPJST. The members who joined us for this open house were surprised at all that SPJST does. We thanked them, and hope they

will come again. The older we get, the more we realize - after all is said and done, more is said than done.

We had 17 members and guests at the open house. Jesse and Linda Pospisil came to enjoy the refreshments, and Jesse installed the officers. Thank you, Jesse, for the door prizes. The local lodge donated two dance passes as door prizes also.

Lodge 48, Beyersville plans February 24 domino tournament

SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville will host a progressive straight domino tournament on Saturday, February 24, 2018.

This will be something new for us. We will charge a $10 entry fee, provide coffee and snacks, and a noon meal. Prizes will be $150 for first place, $100 for second place, and $50 for third place.

Everyone is welcome. You don’t need a partner so come on and have some fun.

The January 2018 meeting of SPJST Lodge 81, Needville was held on Sunday, the 21st. At 12 noon, a prayer of thanks was recited, and everyone enjoyed a meal of chicken fried chicken plates bought from the Needville Youth Fair fundraiser. A variety of desserts were provided by members. Bradley Stavinoha led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. All officers answered the roll. Added to our sick list were Emil Straznicky, George Abschneider, and Winifred Susan. We wish you all a speedy recovery.

Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall read her report, and it was approved as read. Bradley Stavinoha read the treasurer’s report, and it was approved as read. Special Funds Chairman Dan Natho read his report, and it was approved as read.

Under old business, everyone noticed that the new covering for the lodge’s sign was in place, and it looks very good. There was a motion, and it passed to add Dan Natho and Bradley Stavinoha’s names and phone numbers to the sign. Also under old business, a motion was made and passed to have the whole back section of the lodge roof replaced.

Rogers Christmas Parade Grand Marshals: Wilburn and Kathryn Murrow of Lodge 24, Cyclone

Wilburn and Kathryn Murrow were the grand marshals in the Rogers Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 9, 2017, in Rogers, Texas. The Murrows have devoted many years of service to the Rogers Volunteer Fire Department and the Rogers community. They were driven through the parade in a red Corvette.

new members Guatalupe Saladena and Hudson Janke. We hope to meet you both soon. Also under new business, Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall announced the names of 50-year and 75year members. Then under new business, Bradley Stavinoha mentioned the Chamber of Commerce dinner on January 25. The lodge decided to purchase a half of table so four members of the lodge can attend. Bradley Stavinoha also mentioned that his daughter Bailey would like to be a candidate for Needville Youth Fair Queen. It was decided that our lodge will be her sponsor.

The last item under new business, Dan Natho mentioned if our lodge would like to purchase an auction item for the Damon Little League baseball fundraiser. It was made into a motion, seconded, and passed.

Door prize winners were Dorothy Kuban, Dan Natho, Dan Pavlos, and Bradley Stavinoha. Congratulations to the winners! We had a few extra plates so they were given for door prizes. Winners were Joyce Lamensky, Ruth Kendziora, Emma Kujawa, Willie Mae Kuykendall, Calvin Lamensky, Jeanette Newman, and Darlene Blinka.

Lodge 84, Dallas to meet at 2625 Floyd Street location for final time Feb. 18

Dear Readers, Lodge 84, Dallas held its monthly meeting on Sunday, January 21, 2018.

President Justine Yeager brought the meeting to order at 2:15 p.m. Flag bearer Lynda Novak led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance with a moment of silence for our departed members and our troops serving overseas.

Minutes for the past two months were read by Secretary Cherri Petr. After a few corrections and brief explanation about December minutes postponed due to the Christmas party festivities, the minutes were approved by all present.

Secretary Cherri then read Home Office correspondence which included the list of our 50- and 75-year recipients.

Sunshine committee read that get well cards were sent to Christine Bandy and her husband Preston who were involved in an automobile accident, and to Helen Connor who is under the weather.

I hope you are all on the mend soon! A sympathy card was sent to the family of long-time member Pauline Prachyl; may she rest in peace.

Youth Leader Lynda Novak reported on the youth meeting held earlier. The youth completed their Vestnik projects and camp tee-shirt design entries. They participated in a moon phase project complete with Oreo cookies as the

moon. The youth will be attending the Czech exhibition at the Dallas Public Library on Saturday, January 27 with an ice skating social to follow. They have also put in place the plans for their annual visit to St. Joseph’s Nursing Home in February.

Due to the sale of our current lodge property, there was no house committee report. FAC Vicki Sims then presented an Everyday Hero pin to Jim Liska as a thank you appreciation for all his work during the years for maintaining the property.

District Three Director John Engelke and wife Diana were in attendance at our meeting.

As you are all aware, our current location of Lodge 84 at 2625 Floyd Street has sold, and Director Engelke was present to answer any questions that we had as well as to give some options on how we move forward to maintain the lodge and its activities. Stay tuned for further information as we move ahead towards our new home!

Next Meeting—February 18 Our next and final meeting at our current location will be Sunday, February 18 at 2 p.m. I hope to see you all there as we say goodbye to our home away from home for so many years!

Lodge 84, Dallas: bittersweet time of wonderful memories

On Sunday January 21, 2018, Lodge 84, Dallas held its monthly meeting and discussed the future plans for the lodge.

In attendance were District Three Director John Engelke and wife Diana to help answer any questions we might have on our new moving adventure. The new owners take over the building in March 2018.

Our adult lodge’s last meeting at Lodge 84 hall will be Sunday, February 18 at 2 p.m. We are sad to see our building go, but, at the same time, we are excited about moving forward for the future of Lodge 84. More details will come at a later date.

Lodge 182 Falls County elects 2018 officers

Happy Birthday, Alice Sulak of Lodge 47, Seaton!

December 15, 2017 On December 15, 2017, SPJST Lodge 182, Falls County met at 6 p.m. at Lakeview Drive-In in Marlin.

We had a combination Christmas party and new member event. Thirtythree members and guests enjoyed good food and information about SPJST. Children and adults alike had fun playing games and getting to know each other. Door prizes were given away.

January 14, 2018 SPJST Lodge 182, Falls County met at The Chicken Place in Marlin. President Jason Beckendorf called the meeting to order, and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

Reports were given by officers.

Lodge 196 Houston-West plans March 24 Easter egg hunt

Lodge 196, Houston-West will host its annual Easter egg hunt on Saturday, March 24, 2018, from 1 to 4 p.m. We will have some sweet treats and games, and everyone can work on the 2018 Easter egg hunt banner. We have a commitment from the Easter Bunny, and he will be bringing lots of egg for the children to hunt.

Ennis Sewing Circle

Ennis Sewing Circle met on Thursday, January 11, 2018, in the Sokol Club Room. Dorothy Kudrna, Pat Fowler, Irene Prachyl, and I met around 8 a.m.

We stretched Dorothy Kudrna’s pretty tee-shirt quilt-top; we made coffee; and were ready to start quilting. In no time, we had quilters all around. Thank you, ladies, for coming early to help quilt.

Since we had quilters all around, President Irene started discussing the March 11 quilt show. There are a lot of things President Irene had to talk about.

Everyone was really helpful, and all were volunteering for things to do.

Around 11:30 a.m., President Irene led us in grace, and we all enjoyed the delicious soup and sandwich lunch. We had three different soups - vegetable beef brought by Ann Clagett, chicken noodle by Dee Anderson, and squash soup by Sandy Pochobradsky. They were all so good. This was the first time I ever had squash soup. We also had many different sandwiches and desserts.

We always have too many good things, and we all ate as if it was our last meal.

Thank you to everyone for the food, the set up, and clean up. Sorry, I didn’t get all your names.

After lunch, President Irene called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and a moment of silence was observed for Agnes Cenik and Pauline Prachyl. The “Our Father” was recited for the above and our sick members.

Secretary Sandy read the minutes of the last meeting, and Treasurer Dolores Vrana gave her report. Both were approved as read.

President Irene had Pat Fowler install the officers for 2018, which were the same as last year. Thank you all for serving another year. You all do a great job.

Vice President Ginny Svehlak is still recovering from knee surgery. We miss you; hurry and come back soon. As Ginny always read funny stories, President Irene read one for her, and I have already forgotten what it was about . . . quilting, I think.

Sunshine Lady Dorothy had a birthday card for us to sign for Bessie Laznovsky. Her birthday is January 24 - wishing her a great day. We also sang for Lil Kosarek; her birthday was January 1.

Quilt Scheduler Pat read the quilt schedule for 2018. In February - we will

quilt for Irene; March - Georgia Holy, and our Christmas quilt in April. Please let Pat know when you have a quilt ready for quilting.

We discussed the pattern and fabric for the Junior Sokol Traveling Fund Quilt and for the Christmas quilt.

We were asked if we could find out if any of our shut-in members had any quilts for the show in March.

Liz Krajca announced that on February 17 at Ennis Sokol Hall, Nina Marcussen from Dallas Sokol will hold an Easter egg coloring class. One class will start before lunch, and one class after lunch. You will have to call to find out the exact time.

I’m not sure if we will send out invitations for the March 11 quilt show so please mark your calendars and pass the word around. It will be free of charge at Ennis Sokol Hall from 2 to 4 p.m. We also are having Dr. Don Locke show his “Last Supper” quilt that he pieced himself. It is 16 feet long and six feet wide.

I have seen a picture of it, and you will want to see the quilt. It’s more like a wall-hanging. I just can’t describe it; it is beautiful.

The 50-50 dollar winner was Geraldine Kubin. Lillie Macalik, member from Dallas - donated a covered Kleenex box. Kay Lynn Kovar was the winner of it. Thank you, Lillie; it is very pretty.

President Irene thanked all for coming, the delicious soup, sandwiches, and desserts. She also thanked the set up and clean up crew. I want to thank President Irene for all she does for our Circle especially now that we are planning the March 11 quilt show. Let’s all try and

Fort Worth Friendship Club

The Friendship Club met on Wednesday, January 3, 2018, at St. Thomas Church Parish Hall for its meeting/social. The meeting was called to order by President Barbara Becknell, and all were welcomed. The Pledge of Allegiance was said by all. Our guest was Jaycie Skrasek, Debbie’s granddaughter.

Mary Ann Krivanek read the minutes from the last meeting for the last time.

She stepped down from being secretary, and it was sad to see her go. She was thanked for her many years of service as she always did such a great job. Treasurer Margaret Sears presented the financial report. Both the minutes and financial statement were accepted as presented.

At this point in the meeting, new Secretary Laurie Dawson assumed her secretarial duties. She will also do a great job. Members, if you haven’t paid your dues for year 2018, be sure to do so at the next meeting.

The president reported that the sheet for volunteers to pick up the chicken was all filled. Libbie picked up the chicken for today, and Shirley Martin will pick it up for February. Barbara stated that in the event someone can’t pick it up on your designated day, be sure to let Libbie know as she will do so for you, but you must let her know

Betty Krenek will place the order each month for pick up at 10 a.m. The president also stated that a white elephant sale is being planned for April so everyone start thinking about what you will donate. Barbara also reported a change for February, Ash Wednesday falls on Valentine’s Day and instead of a Valentine theme, we will have a Mardi Gras celebration. So everyone, wear something purple, green, or gold. President Barbara also asked that everyone bring a door prize for February. A mardi gras theme and door prizes should be fun.

A report was made on those members who are on the sick list. Tracy Horn was missed; she fell recently and sprained her ankle and broke her wrist. She is recuperating at the home of her daughter.

Helen Skrasek had the flu and also a cuticle infection, but she is fine now. Lois Smith has been able to attend Mass, but, as yet, is not up to par to attend our meetings. Get well wishes go out to all three of you. You have been missed.

Elizabeth Creamer reported on winning $1,000 on a raffle for the Sisters of St. Mary. Congratulations! Jaycie drew the numbers for our 50/50 dollar game.

For the first draw, the first number drawn, wins the prize, and for the second prize is the last number drawn. Jaycie drew Debbie Skrasek’s number for the first prize and again Debbie Skrasek’s number for the last prize. Little Jaycie was so delighted to draw her grandmother’s number both times. As someone said, this was the first time ever for this to happen. Congratulations, Debbie!

I reported that Father Gerald Gordon, originally stationed at St. Thomas Church before being transferred to St. Andrew’s, died on November 10, 2017, in Pennsylvania, and a memorial service would be held at St. Andrews on Sun-

day, January 14 at the 12:30 p.m. mass.

Most of our Friendship Club members are St. Thomas members and knew Father Gerald real well.

I had occasion to visit some of our homebound members during the holidays. First, I stopped in at The Wellington to visit with Frances Mathews. She is doing well, watches all sports on television, and has someone to push her wheelchair to the dining room each day.

While at The Wellington, I did pay Lydia Alholm a visit and she, too, is doing well and still enjoys her trips to Winstar each month. And, yes, she says she is still a big winner each time. I also visited Betty Landsfeld at the Willow Park Care Center. She is enjoying herself there and enjoys having so many folks around so that she can visit. She told me she always enjoys my visits as it makes her feel like she has been to Ennis. Then I stopped in at Sunrise Senior Living to see Camille Bolcer. On December 8, Camille turned 101 years young. She told me that she was treated to a birthday party with her family in attendance. She said it was a wonderful

day. On my holiday visit, I got to meet her son which was nice. All three of these homebound members asked that I thank our Friendship Club members for the Christmas cards they received with all the names. All were pleased to recognize so many new names. All reminisced about the days when they could attend our meetings and what fun they had.

I had a nice phone visit with Annie Whitsell, another homebound member.

She said that she was scheduled for a cornea transplant, but had congestive heart failure so her surgery was postponed. She is hoping to have this procedure rescheduled soon. She said that she can read some with a good magnifying glass. Her next door neighbor is her full time caregiver. She further said she is still taken to church each Sunday, has her special seat, and Father brings her communion. I asked her if she still delivers communion, and she does. She said she uses a cane, has help, and someone always drives her. She spoke how much she enjoys this.

Former member Rita Thomas has moved to California. She used to be a regular before she started volunteering at West Aid Food Bank and her assigned date was a Wednesday. Rita lived in California before her marriage and moving to Texas. We wish her well.

Thanks to hostesses Betty Krenek and Shirley Martin; they did a great job.

Following the meeting, grace was said and a great lunch of fried chicken and all the wonderful side dishes was enjoyed.

The next meeting will be February 7.

Don’t forget to bring a door prize and your side dish to share for lunch. See you at the Mardi Gras!

Honorary Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride celebrated his 80th birthday on Saturday, January 6, 2018, in Temple.

Expression of Sympathy

SPJST Lodge 202, Jourdanton officers and members extend their deepest sympathy to the family and friends of EVAN BARTA, beloved father, grandfather, and greatgrandfather, of Pleasanton who passed away Friday, January 19, 2018, at the age of 90.

He was born at home in Fowlerton, Texas, on June 22, 1927, to Anton and Rosie (Cernoch) Barta. He joined the Navy during World War II and served his country for two years. Evan loved to fish and hunt, and he passed on that love to his children and grandchildren. He operated heavy equipment in the oil field until the early 1980s when he retired. After his retirement, he found great joy in working in his wood shop and having a small garden in the back yard. Evan was known to many as Big E when he worked in his son’s business.

His grandchildren affectionally called him “Popo” or “Grampa.” Evan was an active member of VFW Post 6970, Poteet for many years. He was also very active in SPJST Lodge 202, Jourdanton.

Even was preceded in death by parents Anton and Rosie Barta; and brothers Anton Jr. and George Barta.

Evan is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, MaryAnn (Schrank) Barta; son Jeff Barta and wife Staci; daughter Valerie Barta; brothers John Barta and wife Rosie and Henry Barta and wife Ethelene; sisters Elizabeth Fields and Dorothy Offield; grandchildren Walter Andrew Mazur, Phillip Anthony Barta and fiancé Caroline Vance, Tyler Jones and wife Lauren, Veronica Ashton Barta, Dalyn Smith and husband Alex, Stephen Anthony Mazur and girlfriend Ashley Slack, and Travis Reid Barta and wife Virginia; and great-granddaughter Charlotte Louise Barta.

Visitation was at Hurley Funeral Home in Pleasanton on Wednesday, January 24 from 2 to 9 p.m. with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. Funeral mass was celebrated at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Pleasanton on Thursday, January 25 at 10 a.m. followed by interment at St. Andrew Cemetery No. 2.

Pallbearers for Evan’s service were Kenneth Jaksik, Alfred Jaksik, Mike Kruse, Mike Barta, Jeff Head, Alex Smith, and Justin Shearrer. Honorary pallbearers were Henry Barta and Eugene Bohanan.

We, the members of Lodge 66, Waco, wish to express our deepest and sincerest sympathy to the family of our departed brother, KIRBY W. MATTHEWS. Kirby W. Matthews, age 82, of Gholson, passed away early Monday afternoon, January 15, 2018, at Providence Hospital in Waco.

Funeral service was at 2:30 p.m. Friday, January 19 at First Baptist Church in Gholson, with Reverend James Stevens and Pastor Tater Paschel officiating. Burial followed at Gholson Cemetery.

The family received visitors from 5 to 7 p.m.

Thursday, January 18 at Aderhold Funeral Home in West.

Kirby was born September 12, Kriby Matthews 1935, in Houston, the son of L.O. “Zeke” and Vera (Newton) Matthews. He graduated from West High School in 1953.

Kirby served his country with the United States Navy. He worked for General Tire and Rubber Company for more than 21 years until his retirement in 1986. Kirby also loved farming and was a scissor sharpener. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Gholson for most all of his life, where he served as a deacon. Kirby was also a member of SPJST Lodge 66, Waco. He enjoyed writing and journaling. He treasured his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and they were his greatest source of pride.

Kirby was preceded in death by his parents; and brother Robert F. Matthews.

Survivors include wife Donda Matthews of Waco; children Barbara DeChaume and husband Johnny of Val-

ley Mills, Andy Matthews and wife June of Concord, California, Rick Matthews and wife Jennie May of Phoenix, Oregon, Lizabeth Wallace and fiancé Mark Goetz of West, Sam Matthews and wife K.K. of West, Tom Alford of West, and Ronda Anderson and husband Brett of Citrus Heights, California; sister-in-law Judy Lewis; 23 grandchildren; 26 greatgrandchildren; nieces and nephews Nannette Morgan and husband Donnie, Tonya Montgomery and husband Charley, Jeff Matthews and wife Karen Hix, David Matthews, and Debbie Griffith and husband Doug; and many other relatives and friends.

Agnes (Tupy) Dujka, age 94, of Ross, passed away early Sunday morning, January 14, 2018, at West Rest Haven in West.

Funeral service was at 10 a.m. Friday, January 19 at West Brethren Church, with Reverend Curtis Holland officiating. Burial followed at West Brethren Cemetery. The family received visitors from 6 to 8 p.m.

Agnes was born December 27, 1923, in Ennis, the daughter of Wesley and Aloise (Bobalik) Tupy. She attended schools in Crisp and Ennis, graduating from Ennis High School in 1940 prior to attending Metropolitan Business College in Dallas. She worked in the busi-

ness office of a Dallas cosmetics manufacturing company prior to her marriage to Milan Dujka of Ross on March 3, 1945. The couple resided in Dallas until they purchased a farm in Ross in 1947.

She was a devoted wife and mother who was involved in her children’s school and sports activities and community events in Ross. Agnes was an excellent cook and seamstress and provided childcare for numerous neighborhood children. She was an avid reader and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Agnes enjoyed working in the garden and farming with Milan until his death on August 14, 1994. She was a member of West Brethren Church, SPJST Lodge 54, West, and Ennis Sewing Circle.

Agnes was also preceded in death by her parents; stepmother Bessie Nadenicek Tupy; grandson Tyler James; brother Wesley Tupy; sisters Anne Zvolanek, Mary Sebestik, Mildred Baker, Georgia Tupy, Libbie Wisniewski, and Alice Roberts; and many brothers and sisters-in-law, including Mary Dujka, who was her closest friend.

State Fraternal Director shares February activities

I’m excited! We have some amazing opportunities available this year with District Youth Development Workshops and the Youth Leaders Retreat which are just around the corner! A lot of important ground will get covered at these sessions - everything from Youth Achievement Day, summer camp and team building to topics covering youth club leadership, fundraising, socials, charity projects, and the second year of the Leaders in Education and Development (LEAD) program. Please be sure to read the information on page 1 to find out more about the LEAD Program.

Also, the District Youth Development Workshops and the Youth Leaders Retreat are great opportunities for both the youth and their leaders to share ideas, learn something new, and have lots of fun with old and new friends. Please make every effort to participate.

SPJST LEAD Team I am happy to say our LEAD (Leaders in Education and Development) program is back! SPJST high school juniors and seniors (ages 16 and older) are invited to apply for the 2018 LEAD Team.

This program will offer youth the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills while playing a supporting role throughout the three weeks of SPJST summer camp (or a minimum of two weeks).

Backing the Blob Update - We’ve had a number of youth clubs meet the challenge and elect to support the Blob fund! Thank you!

Please make sure to send in those funds to the Home Office. We still need other youth clubs to step up and help make this happen before summer camps start. The cost to replace the Blob is $4,400. SPJST has 33 active youth clubs, and if each one was to donate $150, united, we would be able to replace the Blob. Please send all donations to P.O. Box 100, Temple, Texas 76503.

Youth Development Workshop The District Youth Development Workshops will be conducted by your District Youth Counselor. Please watch your email and the Vestnik for more information. You will be covering topics that pertain to youth achievement day projects and a lot of other fun ideas to share. Please be sure to encourage your youth members to participate.

Online Camp Applications Please know that applications for LIT Retreat, SPJST Summer Camp, and camp chaperones will be available on the spjst.org website beginning in February.

Each camper and camp chaperone will need to complete a separate camp application. Please be sure to fill in each blank, and if it does not apply to you or your child, fill in the space with “N/A.” All camper applications for youth are due by May 1.

Camp chaperone applications will need to be turned in before or by April 1.

Chaperone training will be set up during Sundays in April. To be a chaperone, you must attend one of the meetings. Please watch the Vestnik for more details.

Youth Leaders Retreat Please mark your calendars and save the date. Youth Leaders Retreat will start on Saturday, March 24 at 10 a.m. at Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall. All youth leaders and their assistants are encouraged to attend. We would really like to extend an invitation to your spouse or guest as well. This will be a one-day retreat, so everyone will have time to make it home by a reasonable hour.

We’re going to cover a lot of ground on Saturday’s program, but I plan on doing my best to make it as educational, informative, and fun as I possibly can.

This year, we will have a lunch provided and recognize our youth leaders. I highly suggest you make plans to attend. We will also be addressing any questions that you may have about the youth program.

Please be sure to complete the registration form (available at spjst.org) and return it to the Home Office no later than March 9 so that I can complete the arrangements and focus on the program.

Decorated Rock Contest Please encourage your youth to attend their district spring meeting and participate in the decorated rock contest. All members who attend their district spring meeting will receive five points in the Merit Point System. All contest participants will receive a participation award, and youth club members will receive another five merit points in the Merit Points System.

The first place winning rocks from each district will be featured in a display case in the SPJST Home Office lobby through the end of the youth year. The first place winning rocks from each district will also be judged on the state level.

Prizes are a $25 gift card in each of these categories: kindergarten to age 8; ages 9 to 11; ages 12 to 14; and ages 15 to high school senior.

All they must do is pull it up on their phone and the adults can be the judges.

Election of Officers In March, you will be electing youth club officers. This will allow all new and re-elected officers a chance to learn their officer duties or get a refresher course.

Youth leaders and their assistants are to identify all eligible nominees for each position and present them in a panel.

All officers will be encouraged to attend the District Youth Development Workshop in their district. Officers are to be sworn in at the May meeting and take office in June. Please contact your District Youth Counselor or me if you have any questions on this process.

President’s Volunteer Service Award The SPJST Youth Program is sponsoring the President’s Volunteer Service Award for all SPJST youth who are eligible to receive the awards. No youth may receive more than one President’s Volunteer Service Award during the preceding calendar year. SPJST will recognize youth for volunteer service during January 1, 2017, through December 31, 2017.

Mark Your Calendar: May 5 is Join Hands Day Our goal for 2018 is to have 50 or more lodges participate. What can your youth club do? Some of the great projects from past years include baking for the needy, cemetery clean-ups, highway beautification, assisting veteran and senior citizen programs, and fundraising for your local volunteer fire department.

You’ve still got plenty of time to decide what you want to do in 2018.

When coming up with ideas for your project, try to do something that will be beneficial and important to your community.

The SPJST Home Office will once again offer a $100 incentive to local lodges to apply in developing and/or promoting their project. To receive the $100 incentive, lodges must register the event with the Home Office.

Phases of the Moon

The moon itself doesn't emit any light like the sun. What we see when we see the moon is sunlight reflected off the moon.

The phase of the moon is how much of the moon appears to us on Earth to be lit up by the sun. Half of the moon is always lit up by the sun, except during an eclipse, but we only see a portion that's lit up. This is the phase of the moon.

Around once per month, every 29.53 days to be exact, the phases of the moon make a complete cycle. As the moon circles the Earth, we can only see a portion of the lit up side. When we can see 100% of the lit up side, this is a full moon. When we can't see any of the lit up side, this is called a dark moon or new moon.

What are the different phases of the moon? As the moon orbits or circles the Earth, the phase changes. We'll start with what is called the New Moon phase. This is where we can't see any of the lit up side of the moon. The moon is between us and the sun (see the picture). As the moon orbits the Earth we can see more and more of the lit up side until finally the moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the sun and we get a full moon. As the moon continues to orbit the Earth we now see less and less of the lit up side.

at the lodge hall because the building has been sold. For the February meeting, we plan to go to St. Joseph’s Nursing Home to present a program to the residents. However, the mother lodge will conduct its last meeting at Lodge 84 hall on Sunday, February 18 at 2 p.m. The new owners take over in March.

The youth are planning to go to the Dallas Public Library in downtown Dallas for the Czech exhibition on Saturday January 27. After the viewing, they plan to go to the Galleria to go ice skating and have lunch in the mall. Some fun activities are planned, and we are all excited for this month’s social.

Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club learns phases of moon

Dear Readers, The youth of Lodge 84, Dallas met on Sunday, January 21, 2018, for their monthly meeting. The meeting was called to order by Youth Leader Lynda Novak and the Pledge of Allegiance and youth club motto were led by Josh Tucker. A moment of silence was held for departed members and troops serving our country.

Youth Leader Lynda discussed old business - Christmas party in December at Spring Creek Barbecue, canned food drive, and the District Three outing at Holiday in the Park.

New business included attending the Czech display at the downtown Dallas Library on Saturday, January 27 with a social/activity following at The Galleria ice skating rink. We also made plans for our annual visit to St. Joseph’s Nursing Home in February.

Youth Leader Lynda then discussed the moon phase project with Oreos as the moon while we ate our way through the phases. She then passed out Vestnik projects and tee-shirt contest design forms for us to complete so they can be submitted on time.

We also sang “Happy Birthday” to Megan Ruzicka! The meeting was then adjourned.

SPJST Leaders in Education And Development (LEAD) program is designed to enhance our Leaders-inTraining (LIT) program and promote interpersonal and communication skills while fostering in- dependence and self-awareness. Service is also an important part of the LEAD program; we believe that service to others, whether individually or in a community, is an essential character value at camp and at home. Successful participants will come away from this program with

valuable leadership skills that will serve them well at home, in school, and in their community.

The LEAD program facilitates the transition from camper to camp staff.

Participants help plan pro- grams, lead activities, and help supervise campers.

At the conclusion of the session, participants will be provided a certificate of program completion and documentation of community service hours.

LEADers will attend a total of five days of training - June 15 to 19 - before SPJST Camp sessions begin.

• LEADers must commit to attending two of the three SPJST Camp sessions.

• LEADers will receive staff uniforms and will live in the staff cabin.

• The LEADer will receive off time with the Camp Kubena staff.

Last summer at Camp Kubena, the Blob received a non-repairable tear.

The Blob is one of the most loved activities offered at camp. This air-filled “pillow” allows an individual to jump on from a platform above and crawl to the end. Once in place, a second individual jumps onto the Blob and shoots the first person in the air, who lands safely in the water below.

The cost to replace The Blob is $4,400. SPJST has 33 active youth clubs, and if each youth club was to donate $150, we would be able to purchase a new Blob and pay for the shipping cost. This amount of money

could easily be raised with a bake sale or some other small fundraiser. Please consider getting your youth together to plan a fundraiser to make a donation towards the purchase of a new Blob. So far, we have received some very generous donations from District Six adults, District Six youth, District Seven adults that equals a whopping $1,300! Thank you to the members of each of these districts for their continuous support of the camp and youth.

Hello and welcome to Czech by

Numbers, Radio Prague's Czech language programme in which we look at the use of numbers in everyday language. We have reached number 20.

The Czech word dvacet - 20 - comes from dva deset which literally means “two ten,” but over the centuries it became corrupted to dvacet.

Numbers between 20 and 30 are formed just like in English: by simply adding numbers from one to nine. So 21 will be dvacet jedna and, analogically, 25 is dvacet pět. Under the influence of German, Czech can also form these numbers the other way round, for example jednadvacet - 21, pětadvacet - 25, or devětadvacet - 29. These can be heard more often in colloquial speech.

The ordinal number is dvacátý - the 20th. The neuter gender is dvacáté as in dvacáté století, the 20th century. The 21st century is jedenadvacáté století, a more common version than dvacáté první století. (Remember what we said earlier about numbers between 20 and 30.)

So we can say Petr slaví dvacetiny - Petr is celebrating his 20th birthday.

Czech Center Museum Houston offers a variety of courses to give you the opportunity to learn a new language or prepare you for your next visit to Europe. Become a member of CCMH (annual individual membership is $35) and enjoy the free language courses in German and Czech.

Ennis Czech polka bands to perform at 12th annual music festival

The Czech Polka Bands of Ennis invite you to the 12th Annual Ennis Czech Music Festival on Saturday, February 10, 2018, at Sokol Hall in Ennis, Texas.

Brazos Valley CHS sets Feb. 11 Valentine’s Day dance

Pianist John Dujka will present a varied program of classical and Czech favorites. A well-known entertainer and musician throughout Texas and nationally, John Dujka earned his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in music performance at the University of Houston Moores School of Music where he studied with Albert Hirsh, Ruth Tomfohrde, and Abbey Simon. A member of the Blinn College, Brenham faculty since 1990, Mr. Dujka is an active recitalist and collaborative pianist and also maintains a private piano studio in Brenham. He also produces “Saturday Morning Dance Time,” a radio program for KULP 1390 in El Campo, now in its 15th year. And John, along with his brother Mark, have been performing as the Dujka Brothers since 1986, and are well-known for their arrangements of Czech music and new compositions.

Dallas Culture Society plans Feb. 21 appreciation dinner

I hope everyone is well and had a wonderful Christmas and New Year! The flu season was passing around during Christmas time, and I hope it did not ruin your celebrations.

Now that we are getting our schedules together for 2018, I would like to have you put Wednesday, February 21 on your calendar for the Dallas Culture Society appreciation dinner for those who worked and performed at Heritage Day at Dallas Sokol on October 22, 2017; this event replaced Heritage Day at the State Fair of Texas.

A spaghetti dinner will be served at 6 p.m. on February 21 in the kitchen area at Dallas Sokol followed by the first meeting of 2018. This meeting will be an important one in which we will decide if we will schedule Heritage Day again or not. If you are unable to attend the meeting, please call/text/email one of the officers to give your opinion of what was good, bad, or needs improvements if we were to continue the event.

Dallas Fraternal Council enjoys Christmas activities

The Dallas Fraternal Council held its meeting, Christmas party, and bake sale on Tuesday, December 5, 2017, at Barbec’s Restaurant.

A vote was taken to see if members wanted to change their meeting place to a different location, but it was all agreed to stay at Barbec’s Restaurant for 2018.

We all enjoyed our social friendship time together before we placed our orders for dinner.

We held a quick meeting so we could play bingo. Thank you, KJT Society 111, for furnishing bingo prizes. We elected officers; since the 2017 officers did such a wonderful job, we kept the same ones for 2018. Congratulations on a job well done! We know you will continue with your expertise in your respective position.

After bingo, we had a wide variety of baked goods for sale so pretty much everyone purchased some delicious treats. Thank you, members, who brought and baked items for the sale.
