Readers Write Dime Box Black Bridge Festival this weekend

The annual Dime Box Black Bridge Festival, featuring a barbecue cookoff, parade, craft and swap booths, and the 40th annual mini marathon (10K and two-mile run, two-mile walk) will be held Friday, October 6 and Saturday, October 7 in downtown Dime Box. The event will begin at 6 p.m. with a chili/hot dog supper, prepared by the Dime Box Lions Club (freewill donation), a street dance with music by DJ Trail Boss Troy, and a 42 domino tournament on Friday, October 6.

The mini marathon begins at 9 a.m.

with awards at 11 a.m. on Saturday. October 7, followed by fun, food, music, and games. Activities throughout the day include a quilt display, car show, youth horseless rodeo, little mister and little miss pageant, a parade, barbecue awards, and auction.

Hosted by the Dime Box Lions Club. proceeds benefit Lions projects and Black Bridge Park.

Mime’s Peach Pie Addison Brown Lodge 88, Houston • District Five 2017 SPJST State Youth Achievement Day - 2nd Place Ages Completed Kindergarten to 8 Years Pie Filling 4 to 6 fresh peaches, sliced and peeled 1/2 cup to 1 cup sugar (depends on ripeness of peaches) Sprinkle of cinnamon 1 Tablespoon lemon juice 2 Tablespoons cornstarch (until desired consistency) Butter (pats to cover the top) Gather ingredients. Mix together and pour into prepared crust. Next, prepare

the lattice crust and lightly sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes or until golden brown.

Crust 1 cup flour 1/3 cup Crisco stick 4 Tablespoons cold milk Mix together flour and salt. Then add Crisco and mix with a fork until crumbly. Add cold milk and form into a ball.

Roll out crust with a rolling pin until larger than the pie plate. Place crust inside the pie plate and press to line the bottom and sides. Make an additional crust ball for the lattice top.

Minutes of the Special Called Meeting of the SPJST Supreme Lodge held on September 13, 2017, at the SPJST Home Office, Temple, Texas

PRESIDING The meeting was called to order at 11:45 a.m.

ATTENDING Supreme Lodge—Brian Vanicek, President; Hiram Dixon, Vice President; Leonard Mikeska, Chief Financial Officer; Roy Vajdak, Director of Accounting/Information Technology Services; Donnie Victorick – District One/Chairman; Jesse Pospisil – District Two; John Engelke – District Three; Billy Rollwitz – District Four; Bradley Stavinoha – District Five; Karen Kaspar – District Six/Vice Chairman; Robert J. Bayer – District Seven.

OPENING OF MEETING The meeting was called to order by President Vanicek with a welcome and recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was observed in respect to our departed members and friends.

PURPOSE OF THE MEETING The purpose of the meeting was to consider: (1) a vendor request; (2) designation of SPJST’s appointed actuary; and (3) add a budget section to the October Supreme Lodge meeting.

A letter was read from a vendor addressed to the Supreme Lodge requesting a meeting with the board to further address the matter of continuing to do business with SPJST.

Director Stavinoha moved we deny the request. Director Kaspar seconded the motion, and discussion followed. Vote was taken, and the motion carried with 10 in favor and one abstention. Voting in favor: President Vanicek, Vice President Dixon, Chief Financial Officer Mikeska, Director of Accounting/Information Technology Services Vajdak, Director Pospisil, Director Engelke, Director Rollwitz, Director Stavinoha, Director Kaspar, and Director Bayer. Director Victorick abstained.

Director Stavinoha moved that SPJST appoint Lewis and Ellis as our appointed actuary. Director Pospisil seconded, and the motion carried unanimously.

Director Bayer moved that a budget section be added to the October Supreme Lodge meeting. Director Kaspar seconded, and the motion carried unanimously.

ADJOURNMENT There being no further business, Director Kaspar moved for adjournment, Director Pospisil seconded, and the motion to adjourn carried unanimously.

The meeting adjourned at 12:05 p.m.

100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive Everyone spread the word! October 1 starts the SPJST 100 Pennies Drive to benefit the scholarship fund. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Donations of any amount will be accepted and added to the general scholarship fund that is maintained by the Home Office. No amount is too small or too large. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive will run through March 31, 2018.

Officer Elections The end of another year is rapidly approaching. Many lodges have had a very productive and successful year. This is the time of year when lodges across the state will be electing the leaders for the coming year. Has your lodge moved forward? Has your lodge met all of their goals? Has your lodge completed all of its projects planned for the year in your community? Has your lodge set goals for 2018? Keeping this in mind may help you make choices on who you will elect to keep your lodge moving forward in the coming year.

It is the duty of all members to provide the leaders of their lodge with suggestions, ideas and assistance. When asked to assist with activities throughout the year, please help your lodge officers.

Fraternalism works best when every member is involved in the process.

While lodges are electing new officers, this would also be an excellent time to check the back page of the Vestnik for your meeting date and time. Many lodges are not listed. This would be an excellent time to get the information listed. Observing Czech Heritage Month October is “Czech Heritage Month.”

That is something to consider if you are looking for an enjoyable theme for your October meeting. Here is an idea: How about hosting a covered dish social at your October meeting with an emphasis on Czech food? Many good traditional and modern recipes can be found in the SPJST Cookbooks.

Heritage Fest and Muziky Mark your calendars for Heritage Fest and Muziky.

This event has been picking up steam in recent years and is a wonderful venue for families to enjoy. Friday, October 20 begins the preview party with Octoberfest on the Deck from 4 to 10 p.m. The opening ceremony will kick off at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 21 at the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange, Texas. Entertainment will be music, antique farm equipment, train rides for kids, Kolache eating contest, arts and crafts and much more. This will take place in the Czech Village around the museum.

Celebrating Heritage Day In years past, regarding Czech Heritage month, members have traveled to the State Fair of Texas in Dallas to partake in Heritage Day. This year celebrating Heritage Day will take place Sunday, October 22, 2017 at the Dallas Sokol, located at 7448 Greenville Ave, Dallas, Texas 75231. Due to cost of tickets for the performers the Heritage Day partnership had to make new arrangements for the festivities. What better place then Dallas Sokol.

The opening ceremonies start at 11 a.m. and will finish at 6 p.m. There will be food, refreshments, dancers, parade of kroj, performances, Czech band and dancing. I am including a flyer with information on the day’s event.

Calendar of Events Please remember to mark your calendars for the 2018 SPJST State Tournaments. Again this year’s State Tournaments will be held at the SPJST Home Office. Entry for the tournaments will be $10 for members and non- members. There will be Czech parties in the morning, a catered meal for the participants during the noon hour and fun and fellowship. District One Fall Fun Day will be held Sunday, October 8, 2017, at SPJST Lodge 186, Caldwell. Registration will be from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the lodge hall.

A Christmas ornament contest will be held for all youth club members. We will play bingo and dominoes.

At 11:08 a.m. on Sunday, April 23, 2017, First Vice President Lesli Milan called the meeting to order. Flag Bearer Holly Jones led members in the Pledge of Allegiance. Flag Bearer Miles Jones led the members in the youth motto.

Lodge 6 President Milton Peterson welcomed all members to the spring meeting. He wished them a wonderful day and a safe trip home. Assistant District Youth Counselor Carrie Ann Jones read names of departed members, and youth presented the lodge member or family member with a yard marker. Second Vice President John Vrla recognized Age 96, 75- and 50-year members, and fraternalists of the year for 2016. First Vice President Lesli Milan introduced nomination committee members Jerry Milan, Jennifer Dvorak, and Kay Lynn Kovar. The audit committee consisted of Betty Macalik, Barbara Hykel, and Cherri Petr.

Contest judges were Dot Gerlich and John and Diana Engelke. Vicki Sims made a motion to accept the minutes as printed in the Vestnik. Kay Lynn Kovar

seconded the motion. Motion passed.

Mary Steinman read the treasurer’s report. Kay Lynn Kovar made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report. Jerry Milan seconded the motion. Motion passed.

District Youth Counselor Kay Weeks reported that the youth development workshop began at 7 p.m. The youth had several rotations: pie bar, paint your rock, YAD cards, and improv. Youth need to go online to fill out LIT and camp forms. Youth Achievement Day is Sunday, June 25, 2017, at Lodge 25, Ennis, and State Youth Achievement Day is Saturday, August 5, 2017, in Temple at the Mayborn Center. District youth officers are: President Sophie Milan, Vice President Sydney Milan, Secretary Angel Pace, and Reporter Clark Jones.

The audit committee reported that Kay’s and Mary’s books were in order.

Fraternal Field Manager Philip McBee reported everyone was working together well, and SPJST needs more members.

Kay Lynn Kovar reported that all delegates to the convention should have received a copy of the by-laws and proceedings of the 32nd Convention.

At 12:03 p.m., April Dvorak led members in the lunch prayer.

At 12:51 p.m., Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek reported that the Home Office is receiving plenty of material or fill the Vestnik. SPJST has more than 100,000 fraternal hours. Sixty $1,000 scholarships were awarded, and the Education Nature Center property was purchased.

Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek recognized lodges with incentive awards and presented Lynda Novak with an agent award, Danny Dvorak with the adult award, and Michael Galler with the youth award. Gold Star Lodges were 6, Cottonwood; 66, Waco; and 183, Arlington.

District Three Director John Engelke read a letter from the City of West saying that the City had approved Fallen Hero’s Memorial Park. Jerry Milan made a motion to donate $1,000 for the Memorial Park. Lynda Novak seconded the motion.

District Three to host adult Christmas ornament contest at October 22 meeting at Dallas Sokol

District Three will host an adult Christmas ornament contest at the District Three Fall Meeting on Sunday, October 22, 2017. The meeting is being held at Sokol Dallas, located at 7448 Greenville Avenue in Dallas, Texas 75231.

Registration is from 10 to 10:30 a.m.

This is also Celebrating Heritage Day, and it will follow the meeting so plan to stay for day of fun from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Dallas Czech Orchestra will play in the morning through lunch. Then there are different activities throughout the day including Czech And Then Some band playing from 3 to 6 p.m. So please come out for some Czech fun and food!

District Four Fall Fun Day Saturday, October 7 at The Barn in Snyder Lodge 215, South Plains is hosting the District Four Fall Fun Day on Saturday, October 7, 2017, at The Barn in Towle Park in Snyder. The address is 3000 Towle Park Road. Registration will begin at 11 a.m. We will have a noon meal followed by games and fellowship.

Contests for this year’s fall fun day are sewing, woodworking, and washers. For the woodworking contest, we will follow the youth’s constructed items rule of 3’ x 3’ x 3’ being the size limit for wood items. Youth members are allowed to participate in these contests as well as the adult members.

District Six Fall Fun Day Saturday, October 21 in Taiton

Dear Members, The District Six Fall Family Fun Day will be Saturday, October 21, 2017, at St. John’s Catholic Church Parish Hall in Taiton, Texas. Lodges 28, East Bernard and 151, Wharton will co-host the event with registration from 10:30 to 11 a.m. A catered meal will be served at 12 noon, followed by an afternoon program of bingo with cash prizes provided by the hosting lodges.

All lodges should bring one door prize and two desserts. Desserts and refreshments will be served throughout the day. Any adult or youth members wanting to participate in a district contest should review the criteria for each

contest.

All District Six members and sales agents are encouraged to include their family and friends for this SPJST fraternal occasion. There will be door prizes; delicious food; adult pie, needlework, and ornament contests; youth Christmas ornament contest; and enjoyable fellowship with bingo for cash prizes and a youth scavenger hunt.

Lodge 185, New Braunfels will host the District Seven Family Fun Day on Sunday, October 22, 2017 at Landa Haus, 360 Aquatic Circle in New Braunfels. Lodge 4, Hallettsville hosts successful annual family day

Dear Members, SPJST Lodge 4, Hallettsville held its annual Family Day on Sunday, August 20, 2017, at St. Mary’s Parish Hall beginning at 11 a.m. with registration and a social hour. Greeters were SecretaryTreasurer Helen Zabransky and Evelyn Holy.

At noon, a delicious catered meal by Kolacny’s Barbecue House and included barbecue pork, sausage with the trimmings and a large variety of desserts brought by members was enjoyed.

Following the meal, President Joe Siptak opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for our deceased members. The usual order of business was dispensed with.

Welcomed were guests Director of Accounting/Information Technology Services Roy Vajdak and wife Becky, District Six Director Karen Kaspar, and District Six Fraternal Field Manager Delisle Doherty. Each spoke to the members regarding insurance and SPJST activities.

Our lodge had three scholarship winners - Melissa Redding, Ashley Leopold, and Nolan Orsak. They were unable to attend due to moving to college, but did acknowledge that they were honored to receive the scholarships and will put them to good use.

Members present to receive their 50year pins were Joyce M. Janda, Sharon Kaminski, and Melissa Prasek. Unable to attend were Eldon F. Holy, Robert Nicholson Larry Wayne Sassin, and Craig Mikush.

FAC Annie Vahalik recognized the oldest member present as former lodge financial secretary Hilmer Galetka at 89 years young, and the youngest member as George Hargrove at three years old.

A door prize drawing was held.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood meets this Friday

The youth honored grandparents with a noon meal on Sunday, September 10, 2017. President Milton Peterson called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. The youth led the Pledge of Allegiance and SPJST motto. Sister Georgie Soukup reported 17 members present. Sister Barbara Hykel read the minutes from the last meeting. Sister Peggy Dobecka gave the treasurer’s and youth club reports. Sympathy cards were sent to the families of Nancy Polansky, Robert Lenart, Walter Lenart, and Louise Bednar. Brother Don Urbanovsky gave the report on the picnic and Westfest. The picnic was a great success, but Westfest did not do good.

Progressive door prize winner for $10 was absent. The door prize for $4 was won by Bobby Dobecka. September birthdays were Joe and Dorothy Dvorsky. Attendance door prize winners were Dorothy Dvorsky, Bobby Dobecka, and Al Soukup.

The September 6, 2017, meeting of SPJST Lodge 9, Snook was called to order by President Donnie Hejl at 6:32 p.m. Sheila Orsak led the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was observed for Elizabeth Morgan. Roll of officers was called. Minutes from the August meeting were approved as read.

Hall manager, FAC, and treasurer reports were given.

There was some damage to some of the ceiling tiles due to the heavy rains.

The youth club will meet before Grandparents Game Day on September 10. They made kolaches to send to Tivoli which was hit by Hurricane Harvey. They will have the country store at the Firemen’s Barbecue which was moved to September 17.

Motion was passed to accept new applicant Jack Dixon. Motion was passed to send $100 to Old Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church for its building fund fundraiser.

Birthday for September is Hannah Kovar on the 11th.

Lodge 15, Buckholts supports Badger Booster Club

The monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts was held Monday, September 11, 2017. All officers were present except for Secretary Dorothy Tomascik. As a result, Sandie Fischer is recording minutes, and I cannot begin to do the wonderful job Dorothy does. We really miss her.

Acting Vice President Scott Brandon led the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a moment of silence for not only our departed, but all victims of 9-11. The treasurer’s report was read and approved.

Once again, we want to thank President Mary Helen Rodriguez for her tireless work renting out the hall and the endless hours spent at the hall while renters decorate, etc.

Under old business, we are happy to report the hole in the floor near the bar is repaired. Thanks to Scott Brandon for refinishing the new floor.

We have been in close contact with Milam County Historical Society and are ready to submit the necessary paperwork and photos to receive our grant.

The recent floor repair will be included in that submission.

Thursday Pool and Burger Night Coming Soon Under new business, President Rodriguez reported that the pool table is ready to be delivered so “Thursday Pool and Burger Night” will begin very soon.

We will sell hamburgers on pool night to raise funds for replacement air conditioning.

Buckholts Badger Booster Club has asked us for a $45 donation towards a new score board, and we voted to make the donation.

The Jodie Mikula dance at Lodge 18, Elgin was great. We had a good group attending, and the band was wonderful. The band always puts on a great show with the best music! Thanks to all who came to support this great group of musicians.

Lodge 18, Elgin appreciates sales agents

We didn’t make the August lodge meeting; we went to Praha so here is my take on August. What a way to end August! Who would ever think that Houston would get more than 50 inches of rain! We are praying for all who suffered especially for the loss of life. I can’t imagine that someone would take advantage of the situation and steal and price gouge to make people suffer more.

What is the United States of America coming to? We never had the protests and all the violence that we have now. I know that true Americans are not that way. Look at how many wonderful people came to the aide of those affected by the storm. That’s what true Americans do! We should learn from the past - not use it as a tool to get even. We are all human beings and equal under the eyes of God. We all come into this world the same way, and we all leave the same way.

I feel that we have slavery in a different form now. Top officials, CEOs, etc. earn millions of dollars a year. The lowly workers earn minimum wages or a little more. How many of the top people could do the work of the lowly workers? This tax reform that is being looked at! If you give the big guys a break, it will work its way down to the little guys. What a laugh. It has not worked all these years . . . why would it

work now? Maybe it’s time that all of Congress and Senate go on the Social Security retirement system. Why are they on their own? I don’t see them giving away their funds. If they had to live on the same Medicare system as we do, things would change. I could go on, but what good? They sure don’t listen to the public.

We had a great group at the Jodie Mikula dance. What a wonderful group of people. Everyone should go to a dance. Forget all the bad things going on in this world and forget your problems for a Sunday afternoon. I know I feel better after being around fun people.

I have not thanked Bill and Lorri McCrary for being sales agents for our lodge. I didn’t realize that they would not be listed on the website of the Home Office. I feel that all agents should be listed. How else will people know who to call? We don’t have signs and advertisements on television like other companies so I will try to remember to put in a plug each month or at least every other month. From Lodge 18, thank you, Bill and Lorri.

Lodge 25, Ennis discusses remodeling project

Dear Readers, Lodge 25, Ennis met Thursday September 14, 2017, at 6:30 p.m. for its monthly supper. President JoAnn Needham led the members in prayer. Betty Macalik prepared fried chicken, broccoli rice casserole, and cole slaw. For dessert, we had three different homemade pies - lemon chess, pecan, and millionaire. I tried a small piece of each, and they were delicious!

Our monthly meeting was called to order at 7:06 p.m. by President Needham. The Pledge of Allegiance was led

by Margaret Krajca. A moment of silence was observed in honor of Elaine Gallagher and Patricia Dujka. On the sick list are Julie Mraz and Ron Mraz.

Minutes from the August meeting were read by Secretary Pat Fowler and approved with one minor correction. Financial and treasury reports were given

by Treasurer Betty Macalik. Vice President Laure Krajca gave an extensive bar report which included a profit/loss report. Laure expressed her thanks to Ray Elleven for his continued work and commitment in preparing these reports for the lodge.

Kay Lynn Kovar reported on upcoming fraternal activities. October 21 is the heritage festival in La Grange. October 22 is the District Three Fall Meeting at Dallas Sokol (hosted by Lodge 183, Arlington). She also announced that the Home Office is accepting applications for scholarships between September and January. Members who are high school seniors and undergraduates are eligible to apply. Youth activities were reported

by Youth Leader Rita Holland.

We welcomed new member John Bradley Jones. Brad is a wonderful asset to our lodge. As a non-member, Brad has been involved in many fundraisers and has volunteered countless hours. We look forward to his continued involvement.

Secretary Fowler read a thank you note from the family of Tony Liska. She also read a very touching letter from the Krajca family in memory of Johnnie I. It was reported that we are still receiving donations to the memorial fund. We discussed different ways for this fund in his honor and in honor of other members who have contributed so greatly to the lodge.

Under old business, we discussed the foyer remodel which is planned to start soon and have a projected completion date of early October. A new chandelier, ceiling fans, and additional lighting

were purchased for the dance hall. The billiard table was sold to the highest bidder, Troy Patak. Proceeds from that sale were used to purchase new tables and chairs for the bar area to accommodate the growing Wednesday night crowd.

Under new business, with the success of dedicating the bar area smoke-free on certain nights, it was voted to keep this policy, indefinitely, on Wednesday game nights and on Thursday meeting nights.

A big thank you was expressed to Arlene Honza who diligently keeps our advertisements fresh and updated. Betty reported that she will be asking for volunteers to help with the holiday strudel sale. JoAnn was happy to announce that the monthly birthday celebrations are back. These celebrations will be held the last Wednesday of each month beginning September 27. This will include a potluck supper at 6:30 p.m. and a complimentary drink for each birthday honoree.

September birthdays were announced. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Ann Juricek and Margaret Krajca who were present.

The meeting adjourned with 24 members and one guest present.

Lodge 32, Victoria sells hall; meets October 12

Lodge 32, Victoria has officially sold its lodge building. It’s a bittersweet time for all of us - but a financial blessing.

The next meeting is Thursday, October 12, 2017, at 6:30 p.m. in the Victoria Mall Meeting Room.

The lodge will provide a meal. We would love to see as many of you as possible attend.

Lodge 47, Seaton grandparents honored with celebration

Dear Vestnik Readers, I, along with all the grandparents, thank the Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club members and leaders for the wonderful celebration honoring us on our special day—Grandparents Day. The meal which consisted of spaghetti, salad, breadsticks, dessert, and tea was awesome. The tables were beautifully decorated. Not only were we as grandparents served a delicious meal, a booth was set up for us to have our pictures taken with our grandchildren. Pictures were taken in the normal fashion with a décor of any type you could imagine to choose from. It was awesome! Youth members will give these pictures to their grandparents after the next meeting. I can hardly wait! An enormous thank you to Youth Leader Amber Bartek and her assistants Sharla Pechal and Chelsea Bilbrey. You ladies did wonderful. Everyone had a great time, and we all are blessed to have our grandchildren in such a super youth club.

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon, 22 members and one visitor attended the Sunday, September 10, 2017, meeting of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton. President Edwin Pechal called the meeting to order at 3 p.m. Flags were presented by youth members Ryan Festa and Garrett Festa with the Pledge of Allegiance recited. Members stood for a moment of silence for deceased members Ernest Johnson and Walter Gramms. Please keep their families in your thoughts and prayers.

I thank Becky Zavodny for taking over my role of secretary, as we were attending the first birthday of our grandson, Foster Koslovsky. Happy birthday, Foster! Roll call showed all officers present except Patsy and sales agent David Pechal. President Pechal welcomed and thanked visitor Barbara Fuller for joining us for our meeting today.

The August minutes were approved as read by Becky Zavodny. The unofficial August board minutes were also read.

A sweet thank you note was read from SPJST District Two/State Runner -up Duke Tyson Bilbrey of Lodge 47 thanking the lodge for the support and money given to him for participating in royalty at YAD. We are so proud of you, Tyson!

great turnout of adults and youth. It was a day well enjoyed. Seaton will host the District Two Fall Meeting in 2018. President Pechal also thanked the youth flub for the nice meal and social furnished for the grandparents. He thanked Brandon Bartek and EJ Pechal for all the work they are volunteering to do at the hall. We appreciate your time and the work you guys are doing.

FAC EJ Pechal reminds everyone to please write down your volunteer hours each time you volunteer at the hall. Applications for the SPJST Scholarship are now available. The month of October begins the 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive for SPJST Scholarships. We hope to see many donate to this great fund.

Treasurer Becky Zavodny gave a detailed report on the finances of the lodge.

Bar Manager Danny Stepan gave his report, and Hall Manager Michelle Porubsky gave an update on the upcoming rentals. A reminder to anyone who would like to rent the lodge or the pavilion, please get in touch with Michelle at 254-493-8020 or Becky Zavodny at 254-721-7435.

Youth Leader Amber Bartek stated the youth had a good meeting with 33 members and three visitors with 22 special grandparents attending. Amber thanked the mother lodge for rearranging their meeting time for the meeting today to give more time for the Grandparents Day recognition and meal. District Two youth will be taking buses to Six Flags Over Texas on Saturday, October 7. Members are to contact their youth leaders regarding the tickets and bus ride. The youth membership drive has been rescheduled for Sunday, November 12. Please watch the Vestnik for more details.

Things are going very well. An update on the number of tickets sold was given.

He is very pleased with new sponsors for the event. Members were reminded to bring items for the silent auction, bucket items, and desserts for the meal.

Lodge 47, Seaton to host November 12 chili lunch social

Lodge 48, Beyersville changes tourney date

Dear Readers, Due to a conflict, the October 21 Progressive 42 domino tournament at Lodge 48, Beyersville has been rescheduled. Please note that the tournament will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2017.

The tourney will be held at the lodge hall, located at 10450 FM 619 in Beyersville. Registration is from 8 to 9 a.m., and play begins at 9 a.m. Fifteen games will be played with a time limit of 20 minutes each. The tournament should end around 4:30 p.m. A partner is not necessary - you will draw for a partner.

Prizes will be awarded to top finish-

ers. First place receives $100; second place is $75; third place - $50; and fourth place is $25.

Lodge 51, Ellinger welcomes new member

The meeting of Lodge 51, Ellinger was held Friday, September 15, 2017, at 6:30 p.m. at Ellinger Fire Station. Ten members were present. President Calvin Hlinsky began the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for deceased members and our troops. Sales Agent Edna Bergfeld was present at the meeting.

Save the Date—December 2 We discussed plans for the upcoming Christmas party. President Calvin Hlinsky decided we should have a dinner of chili and beans. The Christmas party will be Saturday, December 2. Everyone is asked to please bring a dessert for the

party.

We have a new member of our lodge - Nicole Leigh Bergfeld.

The September 2017 meeting of SPJST Lodge 81, Needville was held on Sunday, the 17th. At 12 noon, a prayer of thanks was given, and everyone enjoyed a meal of fried chicken provided by the lodge. Side dishes and desserts were provided by members. I would like to thank Darlene Blinka and the kitchen committee for getting everything ready for us.

Sarah Elizabeth Crotty of Dallas married Jonathan Nichols Minjoe of Dallas in a double-ring ceremony on Saturday, August 19, 2017, at Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe in Dallas.

The bride is the daughter of Mike and Lori Crotty of Temple.

She is the granddaughter of Betty Crotty of Temple and the late D.I. Bohac and Marie Bohac and David Crotty.

The bridegroom is the son of John and Betty Minjoe of Romeo, Michigan.

Reverend Stephen Bierschenk officiated.

The bride was given in marriage by her father.

Lodge 91, San Jacinto plans Paws Across Texas benefit

Lodge 91, San Jacinto held its third quarterly meeting of 2017 on Saturday, September 9 at Crosby Dairy Queen.

President Frankie Brewer called the meeting to order with the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was held for departed members and recently departed member Gene Dornak.

The minutes and treasurer’s report from the June meeting were read and approved. Among the items discussed were communications from the Home Office; the site of the fourth quarterly meeting/ Christmas party; the possibility of making the Baytown Animal Shelter a “No Kill” facility; SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship; a contribution to the Crosby Alumni Association for a scholarship for a 2018 graduating Crosby senior; and the Paws Across Texas benefit to be held at the Crosby Walmart on December 22, weather permitting.

Lodge 84, Dallas: save the date - Oct. 22 Heritage Day at Sokol Dallas

Dear Members, Save the date—Sunday, October 22, 2017, and plan to be in Dallas! Several North Texas organizations are teaming up to celebrate Heritage Day on October 22 at Sokol Dallas, located at 7448 Greenville Avenue in Dallas, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. A full day of activities, food, and fun is planned. District Three members will also gather at Sokol Dallas for the fall meeting on this day. Heritage Day set for October 22 at Dallas Sokol

Dear Readers, The American Czech Culture Societies: SPJST, Sokol, WFLA, KJT, KJZT, RVOS, and Vaclav Havel Czech School of Dallas are celebrating and appreciating the Heritage Day partnership with the State Fair of Texas since 1929. The Texas Cultural Partnership Heritage Festival will not be at the Texas State Fair this year in 2017.

Instead, it will be held at Sokol Dallas, located at 7448 Greenville Avenue in Dallas, Texas 75231 on Sunday, October 22 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Admission is $5 per person (no charge for children ages 16 and under). We encourage you to wear your kroj so you can get in for free. The entertainment of the day will consist of the Dallas Czech Orchestra with opening ceremony with parade of kroje from different regions (including Texas Czech versions of kroj), Beseda dancers, Little Red Handkerchief dancers, folk dancers, a performance featuring children from the Czech School of Dallas, and a Sokol gymnastics exhibition.

Lots of food and refreshments will be available for purchase including barbecue sandwiches, cabbage rolls, klobase sandwiches, hot dogs, klobase boats (potato/sauerkraut/klobase), kolache, strudel, tea, and coffee. And don’t forget the pivo, of course!

Lodge 133, San Antonio pre-Thanksgiving luncheon set for Sunday, October 15

Lodge 133, San Antonio will hold its quarterly meeting and pre-Thanksgiving luncheon on Sunday, October 15, 2017, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Activity Center, located at 1630 Goliad Road.

Since we now meet quarterly, it was necessary to spread the four meetings over the year. We will meet at 12:30 p.m. to enjoy a delicious turkey dinner complete with all the trimmings. I always look forward to this rewarding time that we spend visiting with each other.

Lodge 151, Wharton honors deceased members

SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton held its quarterly meeting and annual memorial service on Monday, September 11, 2017, at Wharton Depot Museum. A light meal was served at 6:30 p.m. to eight members and three guests.

A memorial service was held for departed Lodge 151 members Bessie M. LaVictoire, Francis M. Kubosh, Raymond Kallas, and Clarence Joe Filip.

Vice President Charles Bucek conducted the memorial service, and a candle was lit for each member. A donation will be made to the SPJST Scholarship Fund in memory of each departed member.

President Macha called the meeting to order at 7:10 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and a moment of silence was observed for our departed members. The roll was called, and all of our officers were present except Second Vice President Ray Pilgrim and Treasurer Carolyn Bucek who had excused absences. Both Ray and Carolyn have health issues so keep them in your prayers. Our special guests were Pat Kallas, Brenda Jetelina, and District Six Director Karen Kaspar.

The June minutes and treasurer’s report were passed out to the members.

After the minutes and treasurer’s report were reviewed, Charles Bucek made a motion to accept them. David Bucek

seconded the motion. Motion passed.

Secretary Janie Bucek reported three death claims had been paid. Next she announced we had two new members and gave their names. Charles Bucek made a motion to accept the two new members to our lodge. James Vasek seconded the motion. Motion passed. We would like to welcome Halbert Leroy Watson and Priscilla Perez to Lodge 151. In addition, Halbert Leroy Watson is a new Lodge 151 sales agent.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Janie Bucek reported the District Six Fall Fun Day will be held on Saturday, October 21, at St. John’s Catholic Church Parish Hall in New Taiton, Texas. Next, she reported on upcoming events in the state.

Nathan’s great-great-great grandfather Joe Gaidusek was a charter member of Lodge 4, Hallettsville; great-great grandparents Julius and Matilda Gaidusek were also members of Lodge 4, as are great-grandparents Alvin and Tillie Linhart.

David Bucek gave the cemetery report. He reported our SPJST cemeteries had to be mowed more often during the rainy season.

Under old business, we discussed District Six Fall Fun Day we are cohosting with Lodge 28, East Bernard.

Some of our members attended Lodge 28’s meeting on August 13 to finalize plans for this event. Information from this meeting was shared with our members.

Director Kaspar informed us that she obtained a bingo set for us to use. She also wanted to know if District Six members needed to bring bingo prizes to the district meeting. We stated District Six members did not need to bring bingo prizes.

Director Kaspar also told us how many tables were available for us to use at St. John’s Parish Hall. She also gave us other information about the parish hall.

Under new business, Charles Bucek made a motion to donate $100 to each of the S.P.J.ST. Senior Living Centers in Needville and Hillje for their Christmas activity fund. James Vasek seconded the motion. Motion passed.

Director Kaspar stated that she would be attending an SPJST Strategic Planning Workshop in Temple on Tuesday and Wednesday. Last of all, she said she would try to find out when the Velehrad lodge hall might be moved to La Grange.

Charles Bucek was our only birthday honoree for the months of July, August, and September.

Lodge 187 Round Rock: bingo, potluck this Sunday at 2 p.m.

Hello there, We started the meeting with an overview of the District Two Fall Meeting for the ones who were not there due to bad weather. We discussed all the upcoming events. It was tested out this month with the meeting starting at 4 p.m., but it was not feasible for most. So starting at the next meeting on Sunday, October 8, the time will go back to 2 p.m. for the start time.

To coincide with all of the rain that was received over our area, entertainment by Jennave Fuchs was a story about driving in bad weather. Oh, my goodness! It was a true story - and a bit scary - but funny at the same time. She also mentioned about items that you should have in your car at all times in case you are ever stuck on the side of the road. It was great information. Several others also told stories of their bad weather driving.

We would like to say happy big 10th anniversary to Janie Barron and Eldon Lange who celebrated their special day on August 4.

Ennis Sewing Circle

Ennis Sewing Circle met on Thursday, September 14, 2017, at Sokol Club Room. President Irene, Maggie Holy, and I met early to stretch Maggie’s quilt.

Maggie started the coffee, and by that time, there were several quilters Martha Ritchey, Georgia Holy, Victoria Vlk, Dolores Vrana, Dorothy Kudrna, Pat Fowler, Karen Haskovec - she doesn’t quilt, but she always brings little,

warm, blueberry muffins that we all enjoy - Lillie Macalik, Dorothy Prachyl, and Geraldine Valek. I hope I didn’t miss anyone.

By lunchtime, we had 23 members.

President Irene led us in grace, and we all enjoyed a delicious lunch. It really was delicious, and we had so many different dishes. As usual, I ate too much.

Thank you to the set up and clean up crew, I never get your names.

After lunch, President Irene called the meeting to order. We all recited the Pledge of Allegiance and said the “Our Father” for our sick members. A moment of silence was held for Ella Mae Zmolek, longtime Circle member, and for Elaine Gallagher and Cheryl Cox. Pat Fowler installed new Secretary Sandy Pochobradsky then she read the minutes of the last meeting. Treasurer Dolores Vrana gave the treasurer’s report. Both were approved as read.

Ginny Svehlak read several funny stories that we all enjoyed.

Sunshine Lady Dorothy Prachyl read the names of September birthday celebrants. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Marie Hejny, Lillie Macalik, Mary Nell Sladecek, and Libbie Vrla.

Lodge 151, Wharton honors Charles Bucek

President Irene announced that on October 20 and 21, there is a quilt show in Canton. If anyone is interested in going, we could go together.

President Irene announced that we could start purchasing tickets for our Christmas quilt. Ann has finished it, and Irene had it on display. Ann did a great job. It is really nice.

Next month, Thursday, October 12, we will quilt the Junior Sokol Traveling fund quilt. Everyone, please come to help quilt.

President Irene also announced next month, we will have a food drive for Helping Hands of Ennis. If everyone would bring an item or two, we would have a box full; that would be great. I will try to remind everyone before the next meeting.

Irene’s daughter Terilyn Folchert has cancer. Irene announced that the girls she went to school with are having a benefit in her honor on October 14 at SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis hall. It will be a barbecue dinner, auction, and dance.

Let’s all try and make this for Terilyn a big success, and we all wish her the best.

Remember her in your prayers. Irene’s other daughter Cheryl Blumberg, husband, and children have moved to China. We wish them the best also. Last, but not least, her grandson Boston Prachyl is getting married in Houston on September 23, and we also wish him much happiness.

In Memory of Lawrence Chovanec

Longtime Fayette County, Texas resident Lawrence Ludwick Chovanec, age 83, died Monday, September 4, 2017 with his family by his side at the VA Hospice Hospital in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Mr. Chovanec was born in L. Chovanec Ellinger on August 10, 1934, to Ed. E. Chovanec and Rosie L. Janecka.

Lawrence, or what many called him, Lonestar Larry, was a jack of all trades and a master of none, as he would put it.

He loved spending countless hours fixing bicycles, drinking Lone Star beer, and listening to polka music, but what he loved most, was being with his family and friends. He would have given them the shirt off his back - even if it was his last one!

Mr. Chovanec served in the United States Air Force as a transportation airman and was honorably discharged. He worked many years for FMC Corporation in Houston and later, became selfemployed as “Larry, the Bicycle Man.” He was a member of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston. He was also a member of St. John’s Catholic Church of Fayetteville and KJT (Czech Catholic Union of Texas).

Mr. Chovanec spent his entire life in Texas until a recent move to be with his children and grandchildren in Florida.

He is survived by sons Lawrence L. Chovanec, Jr. and Edward Jay Charles Chovanec; daughter Rose Chovanec Warner; brothers Ludwick, Edward R. (Hoot), and Jerry Paul Chovanec; four grandchildren; five nieces; and three nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ed E. Chovanec and Rosie L. Janecka.

Funeral service will be held in a private ceremony at a later date.

In Memory of Elaine Gallagher

Eleanor “Elaine” Gallagher, known to many as “Nano,” passed away in Dallas, Texas, on Sunday, September 10, 2017.

She was 87.

Elaine was born in Dallas on November 9, 1929, to Adolph and Sophie (Pavlicek) Miller.

She grew up in Ennis and graduated from St. John High School. She went on to attend Elliott’s Business College. On June 22, 1952, she mar- Elaine Gallagher ried Milton C. Gallagher, and after his retirement from the military, they moved back to Ennis.

She worked for 26 years in the banking field with Ennis State Bank, Citizens National Bank, Republic Bank, North Carolina National Bank ending as executive secretary for Mr. Joe Musolina, president of Bank of America, Dallas.

She loved playing her accordion, traveling, gardening, and spending time with family. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis. She was also a member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, KJZT, auxiliary member of Knights of Columbus, and Czech Heritage Society.

She is survived by sons Michael Gallagher and wife Susanne and Robert Gallagher and wife Jane; daughter Kathleen Prachyl; daughter-in-law Debbie Gallagher; brother Adolph Miller, Jr. and wife Marjorie; grandchildren Crystal Edgell, John Gallagher, Jr., Jennifer Martin, Robert Gallagher, Jr., Stephanie Manion, Jessica Marshall, Andrew Prachyl, Daniel Prachyl, Andrew Novak, Sharon Bense, and Suzanne White; great-grandchildren Jordan, Joseph, Avery, Zachary, Nicholas, Benjamin, Ava, Lilly, Ella, Eleanor, Rylie, Kylee, Mykala, Jonathan, and Austin; great-great-grandson Armani; and several nieces and nephews.

In Memory of Johnny Kelarek

Graveside service for Johnny Lee Kelarek, age 82, of Temple, Texas were held at Seaton Cemetery immediately following visitation at Scanio Harper Funeral Home from 9 to 11 a.m. on Monday, September 18, 2017.

Mr. Kelarek died Friday, September 15 in a Temple Living Center.

Mr. Kelarek was born January 28, 1935 in Zabcikville to John Kelarek and Angeline Andel Johnny Kelarek Kelarek. He attended Seaton School and in the seventh grade, he moved to Oscar.

He graduated from Rogers High School in 1953. During his senior year, he joined the National Guard and served for eight years. He married Shirley Schneider August 23, 1958.

He worked for Griggs Equipment Company for four years. He then worked for Paul Boyd Ford for eight years. In 1960, he started farming.

He served on the Seaton Brethren Church Board and was secretary and treasurer of Sunday school and Building Fund Committee.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone and was instrumental in getting a new building for Flag Hall. He served on the Bell County ASCS Committee and went to Washington DC with farmers in 1979. He also planted test plots for Dekalb, Growers and Triumph seed companies.

Survivors include his wife Shirley Kelarek of Temple; sons Garry Kelarek and wife Valerie of Rogers and Larry Kelarek and wife Kristie of Anderson; brother Edmond Kelarek and wife Evelyn of Temple; grandchildren Keaton Kelarek and wife Jennifer and Christian Kelarek; and great-grandchild Lucy Kelarek.

Cynthia Elaine Jonas Krizan, 68, of Garland, Texas, passed from this home to her heavenly home on June 3, 2017.

She was born on July 15, 1948, in the Florence Nightingale section of Baylor Hospital in Dallas. Her parents were Guy Norman Jonas and Jessie Cordelia Snow Jonas. She attended elementary, junior high, and high school in Garland and graduated from Garland High School in 1966. On September 28, 1968, she married Joseph Emil Krizan in Garland Cynthia Krizan at Good Shepherd Church. They have lived all their married life in Garland.

She was a longtime member of SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and son Jason Thomas Krizan in 1975.

She is survived by her husband Joseph Emil Krizan; son Joseph Charles Krizan and wife Amy Krizan; daughter Julie Elaine Krizan Boegler and husband Justin Boegler; grandchildren Joseph Christopher Krizan, Haleigh Simmons, Hannah Cabrera, Jessica Elaine Boegler, and Jenna Erica Boegler; great-grandchildren Marleigh Ann Solis and Levi Paul Solis; sister Norma Starling; and many cousins.

Visitation was Thursday, June 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home in Garland. The funeral was at 10:30 a.m.

In Memory of Hazel Laza

Hazel Taylor Laza went home on Thursday, September 14, 2017, in Ennis, Texas, to the home the Lord had prepared for her.

She was born in Murchison on February 11, 1932, to Ermit and Doris Taylor and grew up in the farming community of Flatwood in Van Zandt County. She attended Ben Wheeler and Van High Schools. She married Willie “Bill” Laza in Dallas on January 24, 1959, where they resided until movHazel Laza ing to Ennis in March, 1979.

She is survived by daughter Vickie McDonald; son Gary Shaver and wife Jan; granddaughter Allison Hajda and husband Matthew; grandson Scott Shaver; great-grandchildren Kylie, Claire, and Evan; brothers Bob Taylor and Morris Taylor; and sisters Maudie McCurley, Janie Snatske, and Marcalene Rorie.

She loved her family dearly and was very proud of each one. She was a devoted wife and good mother. She enjoyed cooking, reading, crossword puzzles, and vegetable gardening. She learned homemaking at a young age caring for her six brothers and sisters.

Hazel, being the oldest child, brought a sense of love, grace, peace, and understanding to all who knew her.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church where she attended and loved being a member of Epworth Bible Class. Prior to that, she was a member of 25 years in the Episcopal Church. Being a strong, dedicated Christian, she served on the Altar Guild and had served as vice president of the women at the church of the Resurrection in Dallas and was a faithful volunteer of the Epworth as a teacher, sunshine chairperson, and vice president. She enjoyed being an active member of Methodist Adult Active Group, known as the MAAG’s.

Hazel was a charter member (1982) of the Veterans of Foreign War Auxiliary Post 7106 Ennis where she served as a past secretary and trustee.

Some of her most valued memberships and volunteer duties were at Ennis Community and later Baylor Hospital of Ennis where she served as a president of the auxiliary for two years. Because of the love and service to her community,

she was a chosen recipient of the Beta Sigma Phi Award as first lady of Ennis in 1985.

Hazel was a member of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis for over 50 years. For loyal service and dedication to the society, she was presented a Lifetime Achiever Award at Lodge 25, Ennis in 2007.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Willie Laza; and brother Joe Taylor.

Visitation was held on Thursday, September 21 beginning at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of Ennis.

A celebration of her life was held on Thursday, September 21 at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of Ennis with Reverend Steve Holston officiating.

Interment was on Friday, September 22 at 10:15 a.m. at DFW National Cemetery in Dallas.

Evelina Marie (Grones) Lenart, age 90, of West, passed away early Tuesday morning, September 5, 2017, at West Rest Haven.

A rosary was recited at 6 p.m. Thursday, September 7 at Aderhold Funeral Home, followed by visitation until 8 p.m. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, September 8 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the As- Evelina Lenart sumption, with Reverend Darrell Kostiha as celebrant.

Burial followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery near West.

Evelina was born February 10, 1927, in Hoen, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Sykora) Grones. She attended Alligator School. On June 10, 1947, she was united in marriage to Raymond Lenart in West. Raymond preceded her in death on October 28, 1996.

Evelina was a homemaker and helped her husband on the family farm and

ranch. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption.

Evelina was also a member of St. Anne’s Altar Society, Catholic Daughter’s of America Court 829, and SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood. Evelina enjoyed sewing, cooking, fishing, canning, reading, and traveling. She especially loved visiting with people and was known for her kolaches and homemade bread.

Evelina is also preceded in death by her parents; and grandson Paul Wayne Lenart.

wood areas. On November 16, 1948, she was united in marriage to Edmund F. Marek in Penelope. Estelle worked alongside her husband on the family farm and ranch where they did custom hay baling and combining before retiring in 1994. Together, they were honored with many agricultural awards.

Estelle also worked at Lorch Manufacturing Company in West. Edmund, her loving husband of 51 years, preceded her in death on August 27, 2000.

Estelle was a very faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption in West and was a former member of the Church of the Nativity BVM in Penelope, where she was a member of the Altar Society and served as a Eucharistic Minister. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court Sacred Heart No. 829, KJZT St. Ludmila Society No. 11, McLennan-Hill Czech Heritage Society, and SPJST Lodge 54, West, where she served many years as a youth leader. Estelle enjoyed gardening, deer hunting, and sewing. She especially loved to cook and bake for her family and neighbors and spend time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Estelle was also preceded in death by her parents; sisters Mary Johnson and Helen Cepak; brothers Johnny Sr., George, Herman, Edwin, and Bennie Hanzlicek; and son-in-law Larry Podsednik.

Mrs. Mihatsch died Monday, September 25 in a Harker Heights hospital.

Mrs. Mihatsch was born January 4, 1937, in Lott to Leo Kahlig and Gertie Schmiedekamp Kahlig. She attended Lott School. She married Edward Mihatsch October 2, 1954. He preceded her in death on July 30, 2003.

She was a homemaker, worked for Baugh Shoe Factory and Temple News Agency, and was a teacher’s aide at Seaton and Rogers schools.

She was a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton. She was also a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and of the Altar Society, and the DCCW. She lived in the Temple area most of her life.

In Memory of Elizabeth Morgan

Elizabeth Ann Morgan, 81, of Bryan, Texas, peacefully went to be with the Lord on August 7, 2017. There was a memorial service to celebrate Elizabeth’s blessed life at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 10 at Memorial Funeral Home in Hearne.

Elizabeth was born on April 2, 1936, in Gause to Henry and Nancy Smith. Elizabeth loved her family, especially her g r a n d c h i l d r e n . Elizabeth Morgan Everyone would gather at her home in Bryan for holiday celebrations, and everyone loved her turkey and dressing. If unexpected guests would come at Christmas, Elizabeth would scurry around the house to find a gift for them.

Elizabeth was a dedicated Aggie. She loved the Aggie Band and the Aggie students. She worked in the Aggie Bookstore on campus.

Elizabeth was also a dedicated employee at Hillier Funeral Home. She had a passion for helping people at the funeral home for many years. Elizabeth loved small children; she worked at the Camelot Daycare and was a true blessing to the little children. Elizabeth was a bird watcher. She made sure that the bird feeders were always full at her home and at her rest home in Bremond.

She was a member of SPJST Lodge 9, Snook.

Elizabeth is preceded in death by parents Henry and Nancy Smith; beloved husband Steve Morgan; brothers Raymond, Milton, and Jim Smith; and infant son Dana Deason.

Evelyn (Machovsky) Muehlstein, age 96, of West, passed away late Sunday afternoon, September 10, 2017, at Baylor Scott and White Hospital in Waco.

A rosary was recited at 6 p.m.

Wednesday, September 13 at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel in West, followed by visitation until 8 p.m.

Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Evelyn Muehlstein Thursday, September 14 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption in West with Reverend David Trahan as celebrant. Burial followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

A lifelong resident of West, Evelyn was born July 4, 1921, in West, the daughter of John and Mary (Hykel) Machovsky. She attended St. Mary’s School and was graduate of West High School.

During World War II, she was united in marriage to P1C Arthur Marak on July 26, 1943. They were stationed in Alabama and the Panama Canal. Arthur preceded her in death.

Evelyn was a seamstress for Lorch Manufacturing in West, where she received a 20-year service pin in 1978 and continued there until they closed in 1991.

On March 13, 1994, she was united in marriage to Johnny F. Muehlstein in West. Johnny preceded her in death on March 24, 2007.

Evelyn was a lifelong and faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption in West, where she was a member of St. Cecilia’s Choir, St. Anne’s Altar Society, and helped prepare the church bulletins each week. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughter’s of America Court 829, SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood, RVOS Lodge 48, FCSLA, McLennan/ Hill Czech Heritage Society, a West Library volunteer, and the Ladies Garden Club in West.

Evelyn enjoyed baking cakes, trying new recipes, growing flowers in her yard, sewing, caring for her home, collecting bells, and decorating for the seasons, especially Christmas. She loved traveling, going on casino trips, playing dominoes and bingo, listening to Czech music, attending church and polka festivals, attending the Hykel family reunion, and visiting with family and friends.

Evelyn was also preceded in death by her parents; niece Janice Caldwell; sister Elenora Muehlstein; and great-nephew Jeremy Caldwell.

Resolution of Sympathy

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 17, Novy Tabor, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother, CHARLES PETTY, SR. Brother Petty was born November 28, 1925, to Andrew Petty and Iva Olena (Teague) Petty in Robert Lee, Texas. In January, 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served his country during World War II until May, 1946. He married Joyce Justus on May 13, 2000, in Caldwell.

Brother Petty enjoyed computers, playing card games, dancing at the Chriesman Community Center and listening to his favorite group Rimshot, and cruising around Caldwell. He loved the “cowboy life” and his church - the Burleson County Cowboy Church.

Charles was a fireman in his early life in Lubbock. He gave free hugs and advice, he was a life coach.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son George “Bud” Petty; brothers LaVerne and Dan Petty; and son-in-law Ken Graham.

In Memory of Larry Posvar

Larry Anthony Posvar was born to Alvin and Anna Posvar on May 27, 1945, in Cameron, Texas. He attended Cyclone, Barclay, Rosebud, and Rogers schools. He graduated from Rogers High School in 1964 then attended Temple Junior College. On September 8, 1968, Larry married Larry Posvar Nancy Dubcak.

Larry began his career in 1964 with Warrior Construction Company as a carpenter. Between 1965 and 1975, he was employed at First National Bank, Wilson Art, 7-UP, and WoodArts in Temple. He then joined Goolsby Building Corp. in 1975 as a Construction Superintendent where he completed a waste water treatment plant in Harker Heights, a water storage pump station in San Antonio, a physical plant for Texas A&M University in College Station, a water treatment plant for the city of Corpus Christi, a tax shop, a storage tank, and the Third Quarter Office Building for United States Army Corps of Engineers in Fort Hood.

In 1981, he joined Belco Construction Company and completed the Cyclotron Project for Texas A&M University in College Station, followed by a transfer lift station for the Brazos River Authority in Waco then a sewage treatment plant for the city of New Braunfels.

In 1987, he joined Daybreak Construction where he completed Sul Ross Elementary in Waco. In 1989, he joined Gene Doss Construction Company where he completed the Texas A&M University Beef Cattle Center, South Fort Worth Elementary, an RVOS building in Temple, a gymnasium in Dime Box, Allison Elementary for Austin ISD, a field house for Academy ISD, a fieldhouse for Rogers ISD, the Rogers ISD elementary and junior high renovation, the football

stadium press box for Rogers ISD, the Temple ISD armory renovations, the Buckholts ISD new classroom building, an addition to the airport for the city of Killeen, a cafeteria renovation for Tarleton State University in Stephenville, and numerous other projects.

In 2001, he joined Vanguard Contractors where he completed the Johns Community Hospital addition in Taylor, the Social Security Building in Temple, the Lamar Office Building in Temple, the Marak Parish Hall in Marak, and several other projects.

Larry enjoyed the outdoors and was a country boy through and through. He always reminded his family how lucky they were to live on the farm to enjoy the beauty and freedoms that it and the country life provided. One of the things Larry loved to do the most was ride around in his pick-up truck to check on his neighbors and see the fruits of his labor from his ranching and farming operations.

Larry was always looking to establish new friendships, and simply enjoyed the company of people. Larry was a regular customer and visitor at B.F.& M Co-op where he enjoyed the company of so many good friends.

Larry was a very devoted Catholic and a lifelong member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Cyclone. Previously, he had served as Eucharistic Minister, usher, and a parish council member.

Throughout Larry’s pain and suffering from numerous surgical operations, cancer treatments, arthritis, and the loss of his daughter, Larry always kept his trust in the Lord. Larry’s Catholic faith enabled him to carry on with his life and set an example to his family. Just prior to his passing, Larry was still actively engaged in farming and ranching, recently completing the 2017 corn harvest with his son.

Larry was a 4th Degree Honorary Life Member in the Knights of Columbus Temple Area Assembly 3488, a 3rd Degree member of Knights of Columbus Cyclone-Marak Council 10186, a member of SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone, RVOS Lodge 107 vice president, and secretary of KJT Society St. Joseph No. 57, Cyclone.

He is survived by his wife Nancy of 49 years; sons Rodney (Stacie) Posvar of Temple and Jeffrey Posvar of Meeks; grandchildren Colton, Kylie, and Brody Posvar, and Brandon and Sidney Stanford; sister Marian (Larry) Carpenter of Morgan’s Point; and aunt Georgia Posvar of Temple.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Denise Posvar; granddaughter Molly Kate Posvar; and brother Melvin Posvar.

In Memory of Charlotte Rendek

Charlotte Ann Rendek, age 65, of West passed away May 22, 2017, at her home. A memorial service was at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 24 at Bellmead Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Mitch Bynum officiating.

Charlotte was born February 14, 1952, in Waco, the daughter of Charles and Anne (Colombo) Whiddon, and they pre- Charlotte Rendek ceded her in death.

She was a member of SPJST Lodge 54, West.

She married Ben Rendek on March 13, 1971, and he survives her. She is also survived by daughters Angela Rendek of Bryan and Destiny Taylor and husband Clint of Bryan; son Shayne Rendek of Waco; grandchildren Lacey Soto and husband Christopher of Waco and Cooper Stone Taylor of Bryan; and an abundance of friends.

In Memory of JoAnn Strunc

JoAnn Mikel Strunc, age 80, passed away in Ennis, Texas, on Thursday, September 21, 2017.

JoAnn was born in Bardwell on July 11, 1937, to Louis and Mary (Spaniel) Marusak.

She grew up in Ennis and graduated from St. John High School in 1955.

She went on to attend Navarro College. On June 11, 1955, she married Stanley Wesley Mikel. They made JoAnn Strunc their home in Houston before returning to Ennis in 1959. After the death of Stanley in 1982, JoAnn married Frank Joe Strunc on August 23, 1985.

She worked for Baylor Hospital (originally Ennis Municipal Hospital) for 39 years as a clerk.

She was a member of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis. She was also a member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters, Golden Crusaders, KJZT No. 25, and the Pink Ladies.

She enjoyed spending time outside with nature and gardening. Her family was the light of her life and she cherished each one.

She will be missed greatly by all who knew her and her family will carry her memories with them always.

She is survived by her loving family including sons Stan Mikel, Robert Mikel and wife Judy, and Chris Mikel and wife Melanie; daughters Terri Andrews and husband Randall and Joni Andrews and husband Toby; step-children Jim and Mary Anne Strunc, Mark Strunc, and Gary Strunc and wife Patti; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother Jerry Marusak; sisters Dorothy Matous and Adell Pouzar; and a host of extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Stanley Mikel in 1982; and husband Frank Strunc in 2002.

Visitation was on Sunday, September 24 from 4 to 6 p.m. with rosary at 5 p.m. in J.E. Keever Mortuary of Ennis.

Mass of Christian burial was on Monday, September 25 at 10 a.m. at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church with Father John Dick as celebrant. Interment followed in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Thank you to all seven District Youth Counselors for attending the Fall DYC meeting held in Fort Worth. This is a time when the DYCs get together to review the last youth year. They discuss what worked and what may need some improvements. This is also a time to plan for the upcoming year and share ideas. This group of ladies care about the SPJST Youth Program and the lives they touch. Be sure and thank your DYC and their assistants for their dedication to the youth of SPJST. The 2018-2019 youth theme will be “Out of this World With SPJST.” SPJST has plans to utilize the resources of the American Camping Association and the Johnson Space Center to bring some exciting and new experiences to the SPJST youth program. 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive The 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive began October 1. All youth club members who donate $2 or more will receive two merit points. Youth club members who donate $5 or more will receive a certificate acknowledging their gift.

Make a Difference Day Make a Difference Day is October 28. Young and old, individuals and groups can carry out a volunteer project for the homeless, or as personal as spending an afternoon helping an elderly neighbor or relative. Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club plans October activities

Dear Readers, The youth of Lodge 84, Dallas met Sunday, September 17, 2017, for their monthly meeting.

The meeting was brought to order by Youth Leader Lynda Novak, and Josh Tucker led us all in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Old business was discussed and Youth Leader Lynda gave us all the activities scheduled for the next few months.

School supplies were collected for our annual community service project.

September 30 is the park clean-up project.

A motion was made and accepted to send $50 to the SPJST Home Office for the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund.

Lodge 186, Caldwell Youth Celebrate Grandparents Day

SPJST Lodge 186, Caldwell Youth Club celebrated Grandparents Day on Sunday, September 10, 2017. All grandparents enjoyed their meal which consisted of chicken salad along with many sides and desserts made by parents of the youth club. I thoroughly enjoyed having dinner with my grandparents. They are an inspiration, and I hope to one day be able to be a role model to my grandchildren as they have been to me. Dear Vestnik, School has started and so have all of my many extracurricular activities. Now that I’m a junior, that includes taking care of my show goats, FFA judging practices for Homesite, theater arts practice, and I even have a part-time job!

It seems all of the free time I had in the summer has vanished. Only one month in, and I am already missing my summer SPJST activities and ready for next year’s camps and YADs—and most definitely, the Corpus getaway weekend!

CCMH ceremony features NASA Commander presented with magazine illustration to take into space

On Friday, October 6, 2017, the Czech Center Museum Houston, located at 4920 San Jacinto Street in Houston, and Vedem Underground, which celebrates the longest-running underground magazine inside a Nazi camp, will present NASA commander Andrew Feustel with an illustration from the magazine that the astronaut will take into space next year. The ceremony is part of the Czech Center’s programming for Vedem Underground’s exhibit Vedem: The Underground Magazine of the Terezin Ghetto, which will be on display until November 30.

As part of the ceremony, Feustel, who has flown on two Space Shuttle missions and will launch to the International Space Station in March 2018, will speak about his decision to honor the magazine’s teenage creators, who were prisoners of Czechoslovakia’s Terezin Ghetto between 1942 and 1944. In addition to a cover illustration from the magazine Vedem depicting a rocket shooting out of a scroll towards Earth.

Houston-based Feustel will also bring a drawing by Vedem editor Petr Ginz in tribute to both Ginz and to late Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon.

“These children came together in the most dire circumstances, and continued to hope for the future of all humankind,” said Feustel, who has long felt a bond with Czech culture through his Czech wife. “Our missions are carried out for the betterment of humankind through space research and exploration.”

For the third year in a row, because of overwhelming response to our previous ornaments, Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) is pleased to announce that we will again offer a collection of Christmas ornaments for sale that are associated with interesting, thought-provoking legends, symbols, or traditions.

Symbol of the Star (#SL-2 - $8) It was the great light of a special star which led the wise men from the east to find the Christ child in a stable in Bethlehem so many years ago. The Christian Christmas holiday begins for many na-

tions in the world today with the appearance of the first star on Christmas Eve. The star symbolizes the hope for peace and good fortune, and demonstrates the fact that people, in every corner of the world, regardless of their nationality, share the same universe.

Symbol of the Fish (#SL-16 - $9) Jesus was a shepherd of souls and a fisher of men. He fed the crowd of 5,000 with two fishes and five loaves. He called his disciples “fishers of men.” Accordingly, people use a fish as the ultimate symbol to distinguish themselves as Christians.

Fish represent fertility and renewal of life. Just as fish are born in water, Christians are born in the water of baptism through Jesus Christ, who invites us all to become “fishers of men.”

The letters of the Greek word for fish, “Ichthys,” are the first letters of the Greek phrase for “Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior.”

The Symbol of the Turtle (#SL-30 - $9) The turtle is a great example of persistence, determination, endurance, and more. The turtle is a survivor. It has the ability to protect itself against harsh predators. Carrying its home with him wherever he goes, the turtle reminds us to remember our roots as we welcome new

places and phases in life. Turtles teach us to appreciate life’s simple, true necessities: shelter, food, drink and most importantly, faith. The turtle’s slow gait requires the animal to have faith that it will eventually get where it is going and that its needs will be satisfied along the way.

When the holidays get hectic, remember to take it slow and easy like this charming turtle and snail.

The Symbol of the Cardinal (#SL-26 $11) The cardinal, also known as the “Christmas Bird,” is a symbol of faith, beauty, and warmth of the holiday season. Its spectacular red color brings cheer, hope, and inspiration during the dreary days of winter, which includes the Christmas season. The cardinal’s red plumage represents the blood that Jesus Christ shed for us on the cross. Sighting a cardinal is believed to represent a loved one who has passed and has returned for a visit. The back of this ornament contains a paragraph detailing the symbolism of the cardinal.

Austin Czech Heritage Association Česky Večer this Sunday

Enjoy Czech culture as we celebrate Czech Heritage Month in Texas. Austin Czech Heritage Association will hold its 23rd annual Česky Večer on Sunday, October 8, 2017, at VFW Post 8787, located at 500 VFW Road (right off IH35 east side between East Braker and East Parmer Lane in Austin). There will be plenty of parking.

Czech Republic helps Czech-Texan community hit by Harvey

Hynek Kmonicek, Czech Republic Ambassador to the United States, announced the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lubomir Zaoralek, has approved the provision of 5 million Czech Crowns ($237,437) for humanitarian assistance to displaced families in La Grange, Texas, in response to Hurricane Harvey. Brian Vanicek, Honorary Consul to the Czech Republic for Texas, notified La Grange officials of this donation that is intended for the basic needs of people displaced by Hurricane Harvey such as shelter, food, water, health and hygiene needs. Mr. Vanicek presented the donation to La Grange during a public ceremony at the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center on Friday, September 15, 2017, where Judge Edward Janecka accepted the award on behalf of La Grange. Hurricane Harvey caused devastating floods in the State of Texas, leading to loss of life and temporary displacement of millions of people, including Czech compatriots. The hurricane and resulting floods also had a severe impact on the infrastructure and environment.

The donation presented by Vanicek represents the Czech Republic’s dedication and solidarity with the United States, and the Czech compatriots living in La Grange during the disaster. Victor Peter Memorial Scholarship

The Victor Peter Memorial Scholarship is a $500 scholarship granted by The Czech Heritage Society of Texas to a graduating Texas high school senior.

The money is given to the recipient upon proof of registration in a program of studies at a college or university.

The applicant must submit the following:

1. A copy of his or her high school transcript.

2. Two letters of recommendation.

One should be from a high school teacher attesting to the student’s academic promise. The other should be from an adult attesting to the student’s interest in Czech culture.

3. A 200-word autobiography (Times New Roman font, 14 point, one inch margins on a separate sheet of paper.)

4. A 100-word statement explaining what he or she plans to study in college or university, and what he or she plans to do in terms of a career. Include the name of the college or university you plan to attend. (Times New Roman font, 14 point, one inch margins on a separate sheet of paper) 5. A list briefly explaining up to 10 ways in which he or she has had contact

October is Czech Heritage Month in Texas!

Czech Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the rich ethnic heritage of American Czechs and the many contributions they have made to American culture. In celebration, the Věstník invites you to participate in its Czech Heritage Month Activities.

Several Czech-themed prizes will be awarded in a drawing from entries received.

Entries must be received by October 18, 2017. Winners will be announced in the October 25 Věstník.
