Lodge 189 Bryan-College Station celebrates 40 years

Lodge 189, Bryan-College Station treated members and guests to a barbecue buffet on Saturday evening, August 19, 2017, to celebrate the lodge’s 40th anniversary. The event was held at C&J Barbeque in Bryan, and more than 40 members and guests attended, including a few that had been at the chartering celebration on July 17, 1977. A slideshow of lodge photos and news items that appeared in the Vestnik over the past 40 years ran on the television screen during the evening. Early scrapbooks and the lodge’s original charter certificate were also on display. Continued on Page 11.

Member appreciates Věstník; shares idea for recipes

I always look forward to receiving the Věstník to get up-to-date on happenings in the organization. I especially enjoyed the August 23 issue reading about the 2017 State YAD results and seeing the photos of the first place winners! The pies look absolutely delicious! I am not aware of the decision regarding the calendars; however, it was always a real treat to see the recipes and try my hand at making them. I am a baker and enjoy reading recipe books like they are novels. I have a question: if the calendars will not be printed, would it be possible to print one recipe in each issue of the Věstník? In magazines and other publications, the first page I turn to is the recipe section. Keep up the great work with your team! Gennie Tepera Lodge 47, Seaton

Editor’s Note: Thank you, Gennie, for this wonderful idea! We will begin including one of the recipes each week in the Vestnik. See next week’s Vestnik for the first recipe! And, Vestnik Readers, I invite you to share your favorite recipes, too! —SPJST—

Dallas Czech Culture invites all to October 22 Czech Heritage Day at Sokol

Dear Readers, The Dallas Czech Culture Society held its meeting on July 12, 2017, and learned the sad news that we will not be going to the Texas State Fair this year. The Texas Cultural Partnership Heritage Day at the State Fair was a success for the past 21 years, and we were all saddened of this news! But, the good news is that the Dallas Czech Culture will not let that end Czech Heritage Day! After a little more discussion via phone conferences, we have decided to continue our October heritage day. But, instead of having it at the State Fair, it will be held at Sokol hall in Dallas. We have been celebrating and appreciating the Heritage Day Partnership with the State Fair of Texas since 1929. The American Czech Culture Society and its member societies - SPJST, Sokol, WFLA, KJT, KJZT, Vaclav

Havel Czech School of Dallas and RVOS of the North Texas area will host Heritage Day on Sunday, October 22 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Sokol hall, located at 7448 Greenville Avenue in Dallas, Texas 75231. Admission is $5 at the door (no charge for children ages 16 and under). Wear your Czech kroj and get in free of charge! We will have entertainment all day! Opening ceremony with the Dallas Czech Orchestra begins at 11 a.m. Lots of food and refreshments will be available throughout the day. The afternoon program consists of beseda dancers, little dancers, folk dancers, a performance featuring the children from the Vaclav Havel Czech School of Dallas, and a Sokol gymnastics exhibition. There will also be children’s activities throughout the day. A live Czech band will play from 3 to 6 p.m. for your listening and dancing pleasure. So come out and celebrate with us on Sunday, October 22 for food, fun, dancing, and fellowship — as we celebrate Czech Heritage Month. For more information, contact President James Macik at jamesmacik@embarqmail.com or Vice President Bob Podhrasky at pod@att.net. We hope to see you there! Fraternally yours, Lynda Novak, Secretary Dallas Czech Culture Society SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas —SPJST—

Attention, District Five Members: The 2017 fall fun day is Saturday, September 23 at Lodge 196, HoustonWest, located at 17810 Huffmeister Road in Cypress, Texas. Make plans to attend and have a great day for food, fun, and games. We will start registration at 10:30 a.m., and the fun starts at 11 a.m. with the kolache eating contest. Activities include tables with games for young and seasoned as well as a craft area where you can learn how to make quilted Christmas tree ornaments and design your own sun visor or koozie. Those with an artistic flare can join in on making the official District Five Fun Day banner or just sit and visit with friends old and new. Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. We are asking that if you are attending to please bring a dozen or so of your favorite cookie to share, and if you wish, a copy of the recipe (people

always ask). The fun continues after lunch with dancing, more games, and the watermelon seed “spit’n” contest - someone needs to unseat Cadance :). There is plenty of room to kick a soccer ball or throw around a football so bring them if you wish. Lots of door prizes will be awarded, too. If you are a youth who is planning to bring your Christmas ornament (see youth handbook for rules), please be there to register your work between 11 a.m. and 12 noon. So come one come all! Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund established by SPJST Foundation

The devastation experienced by Texans living along the Texas Gulf Coast and many points inland reminds us of the fragile existence that we share with our environment. In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, SPJST members and others have been contacting the SPJST Home Office in Temple wanting to give financial assistance — under the auspices of SPJST. The Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund has been organized and will be managed by t h e SPJST Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, located within the confines of the SPJST Home Office at 520 North Main Street in Temple, Texas. Relief efforts are currently underway and are expected to continue for months if not years. A Hurricane Harvey Relief Committee will be established to identify projects needing attention and submitting requests to the SPJST Foundation for the disbursement of funds contributed to the Hurricane Har-

vey Relief Fund. As Texans work to rebuild their lives post Hurricane Harvey, it is important that SPJST — through the SPJST Foundation — do all it can to help them get back on their feet. The Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund is being organized in a fashion similar to that of the West Benevolence Fund which sought to address a multitude of needs and projects promulgated as a result of the massive April 18, 2013, fertilizer explosion which rocked the Central Texas City of West. Checks may be issued to the “SPJST Foundation” and designated in the memo portion of the check to be directed to the “Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund.” Donations to the relief fund are tax-deductible. Checks can be mailed to PO Box 100, Temple, Texas 76503. —SPJST—

Lodge 180, Burleson gives $5,000 to Harvey victims

Our September monthly meeting was held at the Burleson Police Department in the Community Room. We are so grateful that they allow us the privilege of utilizing this facility. Our meeting was called to order by reciting the Pledge of Alliance following by a moment of silent prayer remembering all that were or had been ill and others needing our prayers. Also, we wanted to offer prayers for all of the folks that had been affected by the devastation of Hurricane Harvey. Our hearts have been touched by all the grief and heartache this hurricane has brought upon our fellow Texans. All officers were present for the meeting, and we were honored to have Fraternal Activities Coordinator Frank Horak and District Three Director John Engelke and wife Diana. These nice folks are always a welcome sight to our meetings. At the conclusion of the meeting business, the floor was turned over to Frank and John. They gave us some needed information regarding the scholarship programs and how they worked. Along with this guidance, they also gave us some other options that we might choose to utilize in the future to help our youth. We want to thank both of them for this help. We reverted back to handling the information that had been discussed regarding the scholarships by voting to continue with the Home Office handling the distributions of the scholarships. This passed with a unanimous vote. One of our members, Sandy Almonte, went to the Hurricane Harvey area with items to be distributed. She saw the destruction first hand and said that it was “intense.” She came back with some breathing issues so we must be aware that health issues will be a big concern.

A discussion was brought forth about a contribution to Hurricane Harvey and all of their needs. Our group feels strongly that the people need to be helped first, and we decided that our contribution be designated to be utilized to assist the people where the hurricane hit first. Our contribution was given for first landfall areas of Port Aransas and Rockport. We have been able to contribute to these areas in the amount of $5,000. We feel blessed that we are able to help these people. Last, but not least, let us not forget our September birthday celebrants. They are Julie Wright, Ralph McCrea, Timothy Slavik, James Russell, Martha Pustejovsky, Shawn Smajstrla, Jennifer Nitsche, Deangela Hurtik, Byron Cooper, William Slavik, Charlotte Psencik, Julia Janecka, Marsha Wadell, Angela Bowden, and Hadley Wheat. Wishing each of you a happy birthday with many more in your future. At the conclusion of our meeting, we adjourned to El Fenix in Burleson where we all enjoyed a delicious meal.

Next Meeting—October 10 Remember that our next meeting will be the first Tuesday of October. We look forward to you being able to join us for that meeting which will be Tuesday, October 3 at the Community Room of the Burleson Police Department in Burleson at 6 p.m. Fraternally yours, Nancy Kelly President/Reporter —SPJST—

Present were President Henry Mayo, Vice President Fredrick Wenck, Secretary/Treasurer Gerald Rieger, and Honorary Officer Albert Scasta. Henry talked about some of the people who made this lodge what it is today. Then he introduced SPJST Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek. He had everyone’s attention by talking about all the things that SPJST does. Afterward, Henry introduced District One Director Donnie Victorick. He added a few more concerns of the company. Also present was Sales Agent Jim Schroeder, who made a few remarks on what benefits SPJST certificates have. He also talked about his and Donnie’s past in cooking. Lodge 191, Lufkin sets Sept. 15 dance

Soon fall will be in the air, and not a minute too soon. Anything to get rid of all of the love bugs. What a summer we have had! The hurricane that hit the Texas coast and flooded Houston, Port Arthur, Beaumont, and the surrounding areas was a disaster. Please be in prayer for the victims and families of this storm. Glenn Lenderman and Friends put on a good show for the August dance. Glenn just keeps getting better and better; of course, he has had a lot of practice. Thanks to all who brought food for the food table. Also, thanks to all who brought items for the silent auction, and thanks to all who bought these items. All of the money made on this will go for paying insurance on the building, maintenance, and the scholarship fund. It costs a lot of money to maintain the building. There were several items that were bid on that were not picked up, and several items that did not have a bid. If any of these items were yours, you can pick them up at the next dance.

Next Dance—Friday, September 15 The next regular third Friday night dance will be September 15 with Nathan Ham and the Country Boys. Nathan plays the trumpet, sings, and is just a great entertainer. He has a great band. Please remember to bring a covered dish or snack food for the food table. The next SPJST business meeting will be Monday, September 11. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. and usually lasts about an hour. Members, please attend these meetings. Pat Scogin Secretary/Reporter —SPJST—

District Two Youth participate in fall fun day

Dear Members, The annual District Two Fall Fun Day was held Sunday, August 27, 2017, at SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone. We thank the Cyclone officers, members, and youth club for making the day so enjoyable. The hall was decorated, and everything was set up and ready to go prior to the district officers arriving. The meal of chicken spaghetti was simply delicious. Thank you, Youth Leader Kim Campbell and your wonderful crew, for preparing the meal. And, a big thank you to the youth club for running the games and the parents for serving the meal. With the unpredictable weather, it was good to see the 105 people who attended the meeting. Forty-five of those were youth club members! Way to go, District Two youth! I was honored to introduce our SPJST District Two/State Runner-up King Ryan Festa of Lodge 47, Seaton and SPJST District Two/State Runner-up Queen Shelby Horak of Lodge 80, Holland, along with their cute, smiling duke Tyson Bilbrey and duchess Molley Taisler. Ryan and Shelby presented their speeches. Thanks to both of you, and I look forward to the four of you representing District Two throughout the year. Prior to breaking for the afternoon of fun games which were in store for all of us, as DYC, I asked District Two Director Jesse Pospisil and wife Linda to come to the stage for a presentation. The youth presented the both of them with thank you notes for all the time, support, and love they show to our youth. Each year at camp, Jesse and Linda bring ice cream and sodas and make ice cream floats for us to enjoy on

one of those hot, summer afternoons. This past year, they furnished and brought hamburgers, chips, and sodas for a noon meal. Jesse brought his running buddy Leonard Kaderka of Lodge 29, Taylor to help grill. Those were some delicious hamburgers! He had a “minor” (as he called it) accident in slicing the tomatoes. But, he never stopped and made sure the task he set out to do was complete. Well, almost, except

washing the dishes! Later that afternoon, we were served ice cream floats. We thank you, Jesse and Linda, for all you do for our District Two youth. Thank you also for the donation you made to our youth fund at the meeting. Our director has this thing about marshmallows. He never knows when and where they will show up. Prior to his leaving the stage, all 45 youth came running towards him handfuls of marshmallows and bombarded him. Marshmallows were flying everywhere, and he was definitely one of the “kids” taking it all in and loving it. You could tell this was not his first rodeo with those flying white things! Who had more fun - Jesse or the youth? Ask them the next time you see them. By the way, thank you, LITs, for picking up all the thrown marshmallows. I had a couple adults ask if they could join our youth club and join in on all the fun. We do have a great time. The youth were quite busy throughout the day, watching over the silent auction, playing the spinning wheels, plinko, the cakewalk, and the egg roll game, and many just visited. We were very excited to have 28 youth participating in the Christmas ornament contest. What beautifully decorated ornaments. You are all so creative. Thank you to all who participated. Those placing were:

District Four Youth Enjoy Lock-In

On July 14, 2017, District Four hosted a lock-in at Lodge 49, Rowena’s hall. In attendance were 12 youth, four youth visitors, and five adults. We made slime, painted flower pots, played bingo, watched a movie, and played dodge ball.

Everyone had a blast, and the event included lots of food and fun. Two past youth members—Ana Fuentes and Sutton Schwertner— attended and joined in on the fun. —Pam Lehmann, DYC

ABC of Czech

-

Please - Prosím

ello, and welcome to another edition of the ABC of Czech. Today, we’ll pay special attention at one very important little word - one you can’t get by without.

H

The word is “please,” in Czech prosím, literally “I beg.” But please is not the only meaning of prosím. For example, when you can’t hear someone properly, the polite way to ask them to repeat what they’ve just said is prosím or “I beg your pardon.” Prosím can also mean “here you are” if you hand something over to somebody. Some Czechs say prosím instead of hello when they answer the phone. Prosím is also the most standard reply to děkuji which means “thank you.” Very often the word does not stand alone, but goes with a pronoun - with the meaning “I beg you.” Now, Czech has two types of addressing people, something you might know from French, for example. To family members and people we know very well, we say prosím tě, while it is prosím vás if we address a stranger or someone older. A few other meanings of the word prosím: The basic meaning is ‘please’ but Czechs use it in a lot of situations where we don’t, so if you open a door to let someone through, you say prosím. In English, we would say something like ‘after you’ or nothing - just open the door and indicate that the person should go through. And whenever Czechs open a door and say ‘please,’ I always want to say ‘please what? Do you want something?’ Someone should speak to the Czech Airlines, because it’s very noticeable there. When the stewardesses serve the meals and then they come through afterwards offering tea and coffee, they say ‘Tea, please? Coffee, please?’ An English person would say ‘Coffee, sir? or ‘Coffee, madam?’ This phrase ‘Tea, please? Coffee, please?’ is what one says when one wants coffee or tea. So whenever these stewardesses come through and say to me ‘Tea, please? Coffee, please?’ I’m very tempted to say ‘No, that’s what I should be saying, not you.”

enue. First Lieutenant Ethan Gleue of Fort Hood will teach the class. Lt. Gleue is an Apache helicopter pilot with the U.S. Army and will deploy overseas in October. He is a West Point graduate and underwent nine weeks of language training in Czech and spent two years in Prague, Moravia, and Slovakia. He visited the Museum recently for a tour and offered to volunteer while he is in Texas. “I am so happy to find others as passionate about all things Czech as I am,” he said. “My vision for the class would be introductions, followed by sharing some useful vocabulary words, taking turns reading Czech passages focusing on pronunciation, speed, and proper pauses. After that, I can cover grammar princi-

ples,” said Lt. Gleue. While in the Czech Republic, Lt. Gleue designed a pocket card with declinations and other useful tips so that he could quickly learn to communicate. Lt. Gleue will teach declination and the use of the cases, perfective versus imperfective verbs first. But, if time allows, he will offer help with aby/abychom and other conditionals, the four “fors” of Czech and any other principles the class requests. A donation of $7 per person is requested with all proceeds supporting the upcoming World War I centennial exhibit at the Museum.
