his week’s Věstník features a summary of State Youth Achievement Day on pages 4 to 17. State YAD was held Saturday, August 5 at the Frank W. Mayborn Center in Temple. Youth from across the state participated in art, craft, talent, and public speaking contests.

Congratulations to each youth participant! Our youth program has been tested over generations. It builds confidence and leadership skills in our youth. It’s a great program. Please consider enrolling your child or grandchild. Call the Home Office for more information.

Corpus Christi Getaway The next Věstník (dated September 6) will include a summary from the Corpus Christi Getaway that was held Friday, August 11 to Sunday, August 13. It was a fun weekend filled with friends, family, fun, and fraternalism! If you attended the weekend getaway and you have ideas for next year’s event, please share them with us. We are always looking for feedback!

SPJST is seeking a highly qualified individual to serve as insurance sales/marketing manager. Under the supervision of the Vice President, the candidate will oversee sales and marketing programs of SPJST; establish sales quotas for territories; assist in managing budgets; evaluate sales performance; and manage and develop marketing programs and materials such as advertising, event support, and online promotions.

Qualifications The position requires a bachelor’s degree, or equivalent work experience, with a minimum of 3 years experience in life insurance sales and marketing. Candidate must rely on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Candidate will perform a variety of tasks while leading and directing the work of others. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.

Annual parish bazaar set for Sunday, Sept. 3 in Granger

Dear Vestnik Readers, Everyone is cordially invited to the annual parish bazaar on Sunday, September 3, 2017, at SS Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church and SSCM Parish Hall, located at 500 West Davilla in Granger,

Begin the day with 10 a.m. Mass or stop by during the day to see our newlyremodeled church.

Barbecue-to-go at the pit will be available at 7 a.m. Dine-in/take-out begins at 11 a.m. and includes barbecue, fried chicken, dressing, and trimmings. Adult plates are $10 , and children’s plates are $5. The drive-thru is open from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or until sold out. Take-out plates are available inside at the kitchen counter for $10.

Sandwiches, chili dogs, and nachos will be available from 2 to 10 p.m. Activities include prize bingo, cake walk, toy booth, ring toss, and snow cones. The live auction starts at 1:30 p.m., and the auctioneer is Buddy Johnson (TX License TXS-6520).

District Two Fall Fun Day Sunday, August 27 at Lodge 24, Cyclone

Dear District Two Members, Just a quick note regarding the District Two Fall Fun Day . . . officers of Lodge 24, Cyclone and District Two officers met to discuss our upcoming fall fun day. The meeting will be held at Lodge 24, Cyclone Flag Hall on August 27, 2017. Registration will begin at 1 p.m. with the meeting starting at 2 p.m.

We are asking members to bring a sweet for the cake walk, canned foods/items for the country store/spinning wheel, and something for the youth silent auction.

We are also asking members and youth to make a Christmas ornament to be judged. So please start thinking of something to make. Who knows . . . you may be a first place winner! We would

like to see more adults get involved in this contest.

We will have two spinning wheels, a cake walk, and lots of fun for all.

Lodge 24 will serve chicken spaghetti, green beans, salad, bread, and tea. Sounds good, and the cost is only $3 per plate.

Remember, this is your fall fun day so come on out to Lodge 24, Cyclone on Sunday, August 27, and have a very good time! Visit with old friends and make some new ones!

Ennis Youth Win State Crowns

Bpproximately 200 SPJST youth from across Texas met at the Frank W.

Mayborn Convention Center in Temple, Texas, on Saturday, August 5, 2017, to showcase their knowledge and skills at SPJST State Youth Achievement Day (YAD).

The 2017 competition involved participants in grades kindergarten to high school senior. They competed in 15 events, testing their skills in areas such as wood construction, foods (pies), handicraft, photography (motor vehicles), sewing, public speaking, and talent. The event also featured a special category which is a surprise until the day of the competition. This year, participants were instructed to create something using an assortment of craft materials that were available to them.

District and State YADs allow SPJST youth club members to demonstrate their knowledge and skills and gain recognition for their achievements. As the youth compete, they develop self-confidence and sharpen their decision-making abilities. They also have a chance to socialize with other youth club members.

SPJST State YAD is the culmination of a year of hard work by some of the best and brightest SPJST youth club members.

Winners of SPJST District YAD competitions across Texas qualified to compete at the state contest. Seven District YADs were held in June and July in Caldwell, Seaton, Ennis, Lowake, Houston, Taiton, and Jourdanton.

The grand finale of the 2017 State Youth Achievement Day was the presentation of the 2017-2018 State Royalty Court. Crowned to represent SPJST in

the coming year were 3128!.!3129!TQKTU!Tubuf!Spzbmuz siblings King Austen Holland, Duke Maison Holland, and Duchess Madison Holland and Queen April Dvorak, all of Lodge 25, Ennis in District Three.

State King Austen, 16, is the son of Brian Holland and Kristi Holland of Dallas. Austen is a junior at Plano West Senior High School.

State Duke Maison is six years old and the son of Brian Holland and Crystal Ballew of Dallas. State Queen April, 17, is the daughter of Danny and Jennifer Dvorak of Ennis. April is a senior at Ennis High School. State Duchess Madison is nine years old and the daughter of Brian Holland and Kristi Holland of Dallas.

Lodge 25, Ennis, is the recipient of the 2017 SPJST State Merit Grant. She is the daughter of Danny and Jennifer Dvorak of Ennis. April is a senior at Ennis High School. She received the $1,500 grant during the SPJST State Youth Achievement Day awards ceremony in Temple.

After high school, April plans to attend Harvard University, major in political science then attend Harvard Law School in

hopes of becoming President of the United States.

Teens from each district with the most youth merit points over the last three years competed for the grant. As part of the competition, each teen submitted a 1,000-word essay on the topic “SPJST - Live the Adventure.” The winner was selected by a panel of judges using the following criteria: content (50 percent); mechanics (35 percent); and neatness (15 percent).

Congratulations to 2017 Top Junior Keith Wockenfuss of Lodge 88, Houston in District Five and 2017 Top Teen Grace Lewis of Lodge 9, Snook in District One. Keith earned 178 merit points while Grace earned 174 merit points to achieve these honors. They were recognized for their achievements during opening ceremonies at State Youth Achievement Day.

“ veryone knows the classic adventure of the Wizard of Oz where Dorothy finds herself “somewhere over the rainbow.” When I was 10 years old, I had the privilege of singing Judy Garland’s iconic song and being Dorothy in a talent skit at State Youth Achievement Day. Over the years, this story about a girl with humble beginnings who went on a grand journey, accomplished great feats, and somehow found herself amidst the chaos, has come to mean something very personal to me. Through my own journey with SPJST, I too have discovered the blessings of living life as if it were a great adventure.

Being an active member since birth, SPJST has allowed me to grow in many ways. Luckily, and unlike Dorothy’s beloved Scarecrow, I do not have to wonder what it would be like “if I only had a brain” - thanks to the lessons that SPJST has instilled in me. At youth club meetings, I have learned to be a leader by serving as president for six years, playing with the children, and educating my fellow fraternal family with Czech projects each quarter. SPJST has also taught me to exceed the expected by doing everything from scrubbing the floors before a lodge event, to serving food at benefits for fellow people in the community, to teaching the smaller youth members how to polka and sing Czech songs. I have been participating in Youth Achievement Day for 12 years, and every year, my knowledge expands to new horizons. With opportunities to showcase my talents across a broad spectrum with anything from sewing to science,

SPJST has reinforced the importance of education 3128 Tubuf!Nfsju!Hsbou!Xjoofs and being a lifelong learner.

In addition to the enrichment of education, SPJST has inspired me to value courage. By writing Flag Day essays for the SPJST contest and folding the flag at camp every year since I was five, I have had countless opportunities to consider its meaning. The flag represents the plethora of men and women who courageously sacrificed so much for the freedoms that we now have and enjoy in this great country. Speaking of camp, there are plenty opportunities to gain courage - especially when you are walking across the high ropes on a teeny, tiny cable. Not to mention the blob, where you go airborne eight feet right after someone significantly larger blobs you. After the daring activities, it only makes sense to go to the dining hall to eat, but before we do, my fellow group members and I stand in front of the entire camp to lead campers in prayer. Trust me, I, like the Cowardly Lion, have most certainly gained courage.

While brains and courage are very important aspects of SPJST, the heart is the most important attribute of living the adventure. Even the Tin Man understood the priceless nature of having a heart for others. Every year my youth club goes to the local nursing home, dresses up as Christmas characters, and sings Christmas carols to the residents.

Royalty Speech By 2017-2018 State King Austen Holland

TQKTU!.!Mjwf!uif!Bewfouvsf Good afternoon, distinguished judges, SPJST members, and guests.

The year is 1886. The story is about Josef and Anna, two young lovers, who dreamed of a new life in a far-away land called Texas. Their adventure begins in a small village outside Prague, Czechoslovakia.

Their secret plans were made. Josef would go first, and Anna would follow him once he was settled. So he hid in the woods during the night to get to a train that would take him to a ship. He traveled in the lower deck with fellow immigrants packed in like cattle. The food was awful; the smell was awful. There was no privacy, and oh yeah - no modern day toilet. Not exactly a cruise ship!

Anna’s parish priest tried to discourage her from leaving her family behind, but she was determined to be reunited with her future husband. She arrives in Texas and works to pay back the family that sponsored her trip. She almost dies working herself to death in the cotton fields. Josef and Anna’s early beginnings came with many hardships, but they showed great courage and spirit of adventure that continued through the years.

to have a great Christmas. There is nothing better than that warm, fuzzy feeling inside when you are serving others. Together, we learn how to make a positive impact on the world all while connecting with our Czech culture - kolaches, polka, and strudel, oh, my! From a young age, I recall making kolaches with my district, and helping my youth leaders bake strudels. I am proud to say that because of the Czech pride that SPJST has developed within me, I was capable of being Miss Czech Slovak this past year. Since I learned so much from my older peers in the youth club, I like to carry on the tradition by vol-

ance organizations such as SPJST, Czechs were able to socialize, speak their language, continue their customs, and stick together while living out their new found freedom in America.

Let’s fast forward to the year 2017.

SPJST continues to support families in their time of need through life insurance. It’s strong youth program allows me to experience countless fun activities all throughout the year.

One of my favorite things to do every year is go to youth camp over the summer. Youth camp is one big adventure because there are so many things to do like archery, canoeing, crafts, skits, and swimming. We get to go hiking, learn about wildlife, and do teambuilding activities. It’s not only a great learning experience but a way to develop friendships for life while we have the time of our lives.

Just like Josef and Anna’s decision to come to America to start a better life for themselves and their descendants, SPJST has helped make our lives easier now for 120 years! SPJST understood the Czechs’ adventurous spirit.

Today, I am thankful to SPJST and to my ancestors, Josef and Anna, for giving me the opportunity to live the adventure!

The scholarships and opportunities that SPJST have greatly contribute to my future. In hopes of attending Harvard University, I owe all the skills and credentials I attained to the SPJST Youth Club. I will most definitely continue to “follow the yellow brick road.”

has been around for many generations.

SPJST Youth Clubs perform the dance at events across Texas. Four groups exhibited the dance at the 2017 State Youth Achievement Day on August 5 in Temple.

The Beseda—A Czech Tradition The history of the beseda began back in ancient history. A number of small tribes settled in the central part of Europe and gradually grew into a group of small states, commonly known as Central European States in early history.

The Central European States were surrounded by savage warlike tribes, and they had to band together for mutual

protection. Their languages became similar over the years and first one state then another became dominant.

Because of the raiding and pillaging by the fierce warriors of the stronger tribes, the Central Europeans settled in small villages and towns for protection.

They went from there straight out to their farms and jobs.

They soon found that they couldn’t fight the stronger warriors and learned to outwit and outmaneuver them. When the people went away to war, the children were left with the old people of the village. To keep the children entertained, the grandparents told them folk tales of their ancestors and the heroes of the region.

Those tales and old love stories and

other tales became folk songs and folk dances.

The word beseda, to us, means company or visitors. When they got together, they danced their favorite company dances or beseda. Later, the state leaders chose some of the most popular besedas and combined them to make a national dance for the big state and national celebrations. There are many variations of the beseda, and the costumes — kroje — as they came from different sections of the country.

After World War I, the area was renamed Czechoslovakia. Here in America, we dance many folk dances brought from Europe like the Highland Fling from Scotland and the Irish jibs

and reels. (In SPJST,) we also dance the Beseda to try to preserve it and some of the customs and traditions that have been passed down through the years by the people who originated in Central Europe.

Each of the eight parts of the Beseda tells a separate story—a throwback to the origin of the dance. The first part tells of a group of young people who are out having fun and the girls decide to look around to see if they can find new partners who are more to their liking.

The second part is part of the old game and so on, each part telling something about the early days.

Lodge 24, Cyclone announces upcoming dance dates

Dear Readers, Lodge 24, Cyclone hosted an appreciation supper at Oscar Store on Monday, August 14, 2017, for those who worked at the annual Mother’s Day barbecue dinner. We had a great crowd.

Thanks to all of the visitors who attended - District Two Director Jesse Pospisil and wife Linda, Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek and wife Joan, and Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny and husband David.

November 11—Moravians Lodge 24 has several upcoming dances to look forward to, with the first coming up on Saturday, November 11.

The Moravians will play at Flag Hall from 7 to 11 p.m.

January 20—SqueezeBox featuring Ted Lange and Mollie B SqueezeBox featuring Ted Lange and Mollie B will perform for a public dance on Saturday, January 20, 2018, at SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone Flag Hall from 7 to 11 p.m. Doors will open at 5 p.m. Tickets will go on sale on November 1, 2017. Advance tickets will be $15.

Ticket admission at the door will be $20.

Food and drink will be available for purchase. You may carry in food, but you cannot carry in beverages. There is a wooden dance floor. RVs are welcome and limited electrical hook-ups are available. Lodge 25, Ennis celebrates State Royalty crowns

Dear Readers, On Thursday, August 10, 2017, at promptly 6:30 p.m., our monthly supper began in prayer which was led by new president JoAnn Needham. Youth members Erica Clark and Amanda Droste helped Betty Macalik in final preparation of the meal. We were served delicious baked ham, quarter-cut herb and cheese potatoes, and perfectly seasoned green beans. Betty outdid herself by baking a made-from-scratch mandarin orange, as well as a german chocolate, cake.

The monthly meeting began precisely at 7 p.m. After the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence was observed in memory of Johnnie I Krajca and Phil Bronson. On the sick list were Margaret Martinek, Joe Ben Macalik, Patsy Houdek, and Tracey (Hamilton) Kelley.

The first order of business was an exciting announcement from Youth Leader Rita Holland regarding State Youth Achievement Day (YAD) which was held in Temple on Saturday, August 5.

future leaders. She went on to explain what is expected of the State Queen and King during their reigns. Rita further stated that she does not recall that there has ever been a time in the history of the State Royalty competition, in which the queen and king titles were both won by youth who are not only from the same district but from the same lodge. Having said that, Rita was proud to announce that the 2017-2018 State Royalty are both from our lodge, and she introduced State Queen April Dvorak and State King Austen Holland. April and Austen then thanked the lodge for this opportunity and each flawlessly recited his/her winning speech. After the speeches, some of youth showed their craft projects and described talent competitions which were also entered in State YAD. Congratulations to all the youth! We are very proud of you.

The next order of business was officer reports. Pat Fowler read minutes from last month’s meeting. Betty gave the financial and treasury reports. With this report, she also mentioned that we are still receiving donations to the memorial fund in honor of Johnnie I Krajca. An extensive profit/loss report was given by Laure Krajca. The report included inventory, labor, and repairs to the walk-in cooler and to the air conditioning unit. Laure thanked Ray Elleven for preparing the bar report. She mentioned that he has done an outstanding job with this in the past and was happy to announce that he has agreed to continue to help the lodge in this capacity.

Thank you, Ray! FAC Kay Lynn Kovar reported on upcoming fraternal activities including Westfest, Kolache Festival in Caldwell,

Slavic Heritage Festival, and District Three Fall Meeting which will be at Lodge 183, Arlington on Sunday, October 22.

There was an update on the entrance renovation. There was some discussion and a vote to replace broken light fixtures and ceiling fans in the main hall.

There was also discussion on needing more space to hold the large crowds on Wednesday game night. After some debate, it was decided to remove the unused pool table and to purchase more tables and chairs.

Celebrating birthdays in August are Kay Lynn Kovar, Dorothy Kudrna, Ernie Martinek, Ron Mraz, Adell Rejcek, Annette Honza, Debbie Vitovsky, Matt Svehlak, Lane Slovak, and Hayden Thornton. Celebrating anniversaries are Joe Ben and Helen Macalik, Jeff and Julie Mraz, Corey and Suzanne Baker, Mark and Melissa Zmolik, Blake and Haley Ryan, and Austin and Raychel Walker. The anniversary of Margaret and the late Johnnie I Krajca was also recognized.

The meeting adjourned, and the social began with 25 members, six youth, and two guests present.

Lodge 29, Taylor readies for Sept. 29-30 cookoff

Lodge 29, Taylor held its regular meeting on Wednesday, August 9, 2017.

President Ronnie Rieger called the meeting to order and led the Pledge of Allegiance. We had a moment of silence for our departed. Officers absent were Wayne Voigt and Tammy Cannon. The July minutes were read and approved.

Ronnie gave the treasurer’s report.

Vice President/FAC Sharon Kaderka reported that on August 27, the District Two Fall Meeting will be held at Lodge 24, Cyclone. There will be a Christmas ornament contest and a silent auction benefitting the youth. Westfest will be on September 1. On September 9, the 33rd Annual Kolache Festival will be held in Caldwell. Houston Slavic Heritage Festival will be September 24 in Houston. On October 21, the Heritage Fest and Muziky will be at the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange.

Cristy Girod gave the youth club report. They had a great time at camp.

Hailey Girod won second at State YAD for her pictorial arts project. Brandon Girod won the $1,000 District Two Merit Grant. The youth club will have a membership drive the last Sunday in October. The youth club will be sponsoring the silent auction at the barbecue cookoff. Any donations will be appreciated. Proceeds are used to adopt needy

families at Christmas.

Jesse Pospisil gave the property committee report. The new grill vent is finally installed and waiting final inspection. Lodge 29 bought a new air conditioner for the north side of the building. We took out a loan to pay for new siding on the hall building.

Albin Machu signed up new members Sylvia Delancey and Hadley Lynn Jez. Jesse Pospisil made a motion to accept the new members, and Frankie Pustejovsky seconded. The motion prevailed.

Ronnie discussed the barbecue cookoff and asked if anyone could contact sponsors for the event. Ronnie presented Jesse and Frankie gift cards for the long hours they have been working at the hall.

SPJST Lodge 49, Rowena held its annual member appreciation dinner on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at Lowake Steak House in Rowena.

There were 30 members and seven guests in attendance. A short business meeting was held in conjunction with the dinner. District Four Fall Fun Day will be held in Synder and hosted by Lodge 215, South Plains on October 7. Everyone was encouraged to attend. Ideas for Make a Difference Day were also discussed. A delicious meal and fellowship was enjoyed by all.

Lodge 47, Seaton sets September 16 Outdoor Extravaganza

Lodge 80, Holland reports on July meeting

SPJST Lodge 80, Holland’s meeting was called to order by President Rita Spinn on Tuesday, July 11, 2017, at 6:30 p.m. The board of directors met prior to the general meeting.

Membership stood for the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for the departed members.

All officers were present. Board of directors absent were Coleman Benner and Helen Pajestka. Guests were District Two Director Jesse Pospisil and wife Linda along with grandson Colin.

Minutes of the May meeting were read. Motion was made by Vicki Slye and seconded by Frank Horak to accept the minutes as read, with one correction as to filters purchased (should have stated smoke filters not air conditioner filters). Motion carried.

Financial reports for May and June and the bingo quarterly report were read

by Frank Pajestka, Jr. Motion was made

by Frank Horak, seconded by Danny Hendrix, to accept the financial reports.

The financial reports were approved by the board of directors prior to the meeting. Motion carried.

Motion was made by Joe W. Liles, seconded by Risa Pajestka, to donate the following: $230 to Bell County Youth Fair for two belt buckles; $125 sponsorship to Holland ISD cheerleaders for the football tunnel that is used at the games; $100 to Shelby Horak for winning District Two Queen and $25 to Molley Taisler for winning District Two Duchess; and $50 to Holland Pee Wee Football and Cheerleaders. The motion carried.

A discussion followed concerning new bingo laws that take effect on September 1, 2017.

We received a letter from SPJST Supreme Lodge Vice President Hiram Dixon that we have a new sales agent, Arthur Cosper.

Motion was made by Frank Horak, seconded by Vicki Slye, to accept transfer of membership to Lodge 80 for Heather Motal Tobin. Motion carried.

Youth Leader Connie Horak reported that they have four going to District Two Camp. Shelby will be working at camp.

FAC Frank Pajestka reported that the District Two meeting will be the last Sunday in August (fall fun day meeting) to be held at Lodge 24, Cyclone.

Concerning service dogs in the hall, we will create a sign. Owners must have control of service animals at all time.

Holland Youth Boosters will use the hall on September 16. Bartlett Area Youth Boosters will use the hall on October 21.

District Two Director, Jesse Pospisil gave us a report from the Home Office.

Insurance sales are on track for a good year.

Birthdays in July are for Connie Horak, Curtis Wolf, Virginia Benner, Rick Slye, Regina Peevey, and Linda Pospisil.

Lodge 141, Sealy to host floats in Bellville, Wallis parades

Lodge 141, Sealy held a meeting on Tuesday, August 8, 2017, with President Rick Martinez presiding. The meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by roll call of officers. All officers were present. Secretary Bernice Stolarski read the minutes, and Treasurer Freda Jemela gave her report.

We discussed reserving the float for the Austin County Fair Parade and the Wallis Lighted Christmas Parade.

Melanie will be asked to reserve the dates of October 12 and December 16.

We then talked about making some charitable donations in our area.

For the next meeting, we will present some suggestions for both Sealy and Wallis.

SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton will hold its quarterly meeting on Monday, September 11, 2017, at Wharton Depot Museum, located at 100 Sunset Street in Wharton.

A memorial service will be held for deceased Lodge 151 members: Bessie M. LaVictorie, Francis M. Kubosh, Raymond Kallas, and Clarence Joe Filip.

Family members are invited to attend the memorial service and light a candle in remembrance of their loved one.

We also need to finalize plans for cohosting the District Six Fall Fun Day with Lodge 28, East Bernard. This event will be held on Saturday, October 21 at St. John’s Catholic Church parish hall in New Taiton.

Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth

“Summertime and the living is easy” as the song goes. Not so sure about that!

In Texas, it is so hot that no one wants to go outdoors for anything if at all possible. Our members and guests, however, did come out in large numbers in July and again in August. We are so thankful that they chose to spend the day with us. In July, 58 members and guests attended, and in August, we had a gathering of 52 members and guests. Awesome attendance in my opinion, and as always, there was a lot of hugging, catching up, eating, and enjoying each other’s company. My apologies for not sending in the July report; I’ve been under the weather lately.

President Cathy began the meeting by leading the group in the Pledge of Allegiance, welcoming everyone, and recognizing guests. A couple of them decided we were a good group and decided to join us as members.

Vice President Janet Basham read a sweet message regarding the Holocaust.

Business continued with the reading of the minutes which were approved with several corrections. The financial report was shared, and we have a few coins in our bank account.

Sunshine Chair Marlene Bass reported that Hermina Cihacek fell and broke her hip. Since this information was by word of mouth, Marlene had been unable to find which facility Hermina went to for rehab. However, since the meeting last week, it has been discovered that she is now at Broadway Plaza in Southwest Fort Worth. She seems to be doing fine and will welcome anyone who want to come for a visit.

Announcements Along with the children returning to school, we are collecting school supplies in August and September. We want to do our part with the education of our young ones and assist the teachers however we can. Please help us get a truck-load of pens, paper, and whatever else comes to mind, for the teachers and kiddos. Although Lisa Juran was absent, we nominated her to deliver the goodies that are being collected.

Gayle Kringle, Evelyn Scaff’s daughter, announced she and her family are hosting a big 90th birthday party for her on August 20. All Ladies Circle members are invited but do need to RSVP so they could get a good count for lunch. The festivities will be held here at Lodge 92, Fort Worth on Sunday af-

For September, we are encouraging everyone to be a sports fan! Dress the part and come as a Cowboy Cheerleader or a Texas Ranger Batboy. (Smile) Not really. However you wish to dress; we’ll have a good time.

Lydia Alholm asked to be recognized. What a wealth of information she holds in her heart. She shared a story about the kindness of a gentleman recently, everyone listened intently, and enjoyed her message. We love for her to share with us her travels on her journey through life.

You know that lunch was delicious because Mary Ann Krivanek, Marie Keller, Jeanette Tesar, Joyce Tesar, and Lupe Esparza were in the kitchen.

Thank you, ladies, for the wonderful meal. It looked delicious.

“Happy Birthday” was sung to August birthday babes—Mary Ann Adcock, Janice Record, Evelyn Scaff, Joan Shropshire, and Betty Krenek. And, happy birthday to those who could not attend.

John Durham updated the group on Czech Heritage Day being held on September 17. He gave a brief rundown on times and activities that would be taking place. The Ladies Circle will once again hold a cake walk to add to the festivities.

Cakes and/or monetary donations will be accepted.

In closing, five door prizes were awarded. Mary Ann Krivanek read the cutest story ever, Theretta read from Facebook a cutie as well, and Vice President Janet shared a her message. Our meeting ended on a high note and laughter. The blessing for lunch was said, and the day closed by playing bingo.

Thanks to all who came. It was a record day for attendance, and it was a great day. Watch out for the heat, and see you next month.

District Two Fall Fun Day this Sunday at Lodge 24, Cyclone

Dear Vestnik Readers, The District Two Fall Fun Day will be held at Lodge 24, Cyclone on Sunday, August 27, 2017.

Registration of the youth and adult Christmas ornaments will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Rules can be found on page 37 of the 2017-2018 youth handbook or online at www.spjst.org. I do hope each of you, youth and adults, will show your talent. First place ornaments in each age category will be displayed on the SPJST Youth Christmas Tree at the Home Office. All youth participating will receive participation money along with the top three winners in each category winning a monetary prize. A short business meeting will be held at 2 p.m. A drink ticket and game tickets will also be given to all in attendance.

Those in attendance will be honored to meet and greet our 2017-2018 District Two/State Runners-up Royalty Court, King Ryan Festa and Duke Tyson Bilbrey, both of Lodge 47, Seaton, and District Two/State Runner-up Queen Shelby Horak and Duchess Molley Taisler, both of Lodge 80, Holland.

Ryan and Shelby were awesome at District Two and State YAD. They will share their awesome winning speeches.

We are so very proud of our royalty court.

There will be a lot of fun things going on this day including a cake walk, adult and youth spinning wheels, plinko, and several other games. We ask that each family bring a cake and other items for the spinning wheel.

Silent Auction The District Two Youth Club will be having a silent auction. We are asking each youth club to bring at least one

item of $10 or more value. Each family or anyone interested in supporting the youth, please bring an item also. Your items and bids will be appreciated. Proceeds will go towards the Six Flags trip which will be held on Saturday, October 7. Please mark your calendar for this day. It has been a couple years since we had a Six Flags trip. So many of you have asked about it, so here we go!

Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club shares busy summer

SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club met this summer on June 11, July 2, and August 6. New members are Jaycee Parker and Lila Supak. The club participated in LIT Camp, SPJST District One Camp, District One and State YAD, dancing the beseda in Austin, the district summer social at the Caldwell Pool, the End-of-Summer Getaway in Corpus Christi, and the Coppers Hollow Back-to-School event.

The senior group talent, entitled “Blast from the Past,” that represented Lodge 17 won first at District YAD and second at State YAD. The junior group talent, entitled “Synchronized Swimming,” won second at District YAD. Dillon Narro won District One King along with his duke, Cobey McCuller.

The city of Ennis held a Fourth of July parade on Saturday, July 1, 2017.

I had fun at the Corpus Christi Getaway. I was with friends and had fun. I won the kolache eating contest two years in a row. The hula hoop contest was fun also.

We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Pokrok, No. 84, Dallas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed brother ROBERT DURON, JR. Robert (Bob) Duron, Jr., was born on August 2, 1924, in Dallas, Texas, to Robert Duron and Hattie Kopecky.

He was the youngest of three and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School. After graduation and a Robert Duron, Jr. short time working

for Baker Brothers, Bob was drafted into the US Army Air Force. Upon honorable discharge, he went to work for Texas Instruments where he was employed for 37 years until retirement.

Bob loved Czech music and was a founding member of the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra as well as a member of Charlie Adamcik’s Polka Tones. He was very proud of his Czech heritage and took pride in watching his son and daughters play along with him as they grew up. He was also an avid sports fan and spent endless hours spoiling and playing with his grandchildren.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas.

Bob passed away on Saturday, August 5, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Mary and Annie; and grandson Bubba.

In Memory of Phillip Bronson

Phillip Harmon Bronson, “Phil,” passed away on Sunday, August 6, 2017, in Ennis, Texas.

Phil was born in Hartford, Connecticut, to John Harvey and Marjorie (Marvin) Bronson. He grew up in Freedom Plains, New York, and graduated from Arlington High School, New York. On June 12, 1987, he married his soulmate, Diane Bouska, and they made their home in Ennis.

He served his country proudly in the

United States Air Force. He worked for more than 23 years for GAF. He was a member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church and SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis.

He is survived by wife Diane Bouska Bronson; and sister Candy Tompkins and husband Carle.

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Midge Bronson.

Visitation was Thursday, August 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. in J.E. Keever Mortuary of Ennis. Rosary was recited at 7 p.m.

Mass of Christian burial was Friday, August 11 at 10 a.m. in St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church of Ennis with Father John as celebrant. Please consider making a donation to the charity of your choice.

The Resolution Committee of Lodge Karel Havlicek, No. 4, Hallettsville, Texas, on behalf of the entire membership wish to express our sincere and deepest sympathy to the family of our departed sister, MARY JANE CERVENKA, 57, of Austin, who passed away Saturday, March 4, 2017. She was born on November 27, 1959, to Daniel R. and Helen (Mican) Cervenka in Pasadena, Texas.

Mary is survived by sister Sharon Rogers and husband Cecil of Georgetown, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral service was held Friday, March 10 at Kubena Funeral Home in Hallettsville with visitation starting at 10 a.m. Burial followed at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Msgr. John Peters officiated.

Summer - Time for fun and junk food

n the Czech Republic, summer is a time of fun fairs, day trips, and swimming and bathing in lakes and open air pools. Those events and locations are associated with a special type of food, or junk food, to be more precise. Without it, the experience would not be complete.

For example, you cannot go to a fun fair - pouť and not try a grilled smoked sausage - klobása with mustard hořčice served on a paper plate and washed down with soda pops, limonáda or beer - pivo - from a plastic cup - v kelímku.

Grilled sausages are usually served at swimming pools, too. Another typical lunch at the swimming pool is fried cheese smažený sýr - which is a cholesterol bomb. It is a slab of hard cheese coated in breadcrumbs and deep-fried in oil.

After that, it’s time for a dessert. You can choose between zmrzlina - ice cream, cukrová vata - candy floss (literally “sugar cotton”), turecký med - literally Turkish honey - a chewy mixture of honey, sugar,

Another favourite fun fair sweet is žužu - a brightly coloured marshmallowtype of candy which is often several centimetres thick and up to half a metre long.

The ultimate fun fair classic, though, is perníkové srdce - a gingerbread heart.

They are approximately the size of a book and usually have the words “with love” or “I love you” written on them in sugar icing. Gingerbread hearts are the typical presents that boys bring back to their mums or give their girlfriends, who then usually keep them till they are bone dry.

You can imagine that a day at a Czech fun fair or swimming pool usually results in many upset stomachs. The important thing is not to eat all those delicacies all at once.
