Home Office Job Opening Scanning/Data Entry Clerk SPJST is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Scanning/Data Entry Clerk. This is an entry level position that requires experience in the accounting field. Duties include scanning updated and old documents into a data-based computer system, data entry, answering telephone inquiries and correspondence with members, general office and clerical duties, and other functions within the accounting department.

Qualifications include the ability to operate general office machines and scanners, being computer literate in Windows-based software including Word and Excel, and the ability to work in a team environment.

Member shares life in Czech Republic

Summer is here. My strawberries need to be picked every day, and I have a very small patch but made a coffee cake and a strawberry-rhubarb pie. I might make some jam as well.

I’ll be teaching English until the end of the month (June) in the different companies that I go to each week.

On the 30th, I’ll be meeting with part of the Czech Team who do volunteer work for Czech-American TV ( like public broadcasting) located in Florida (www.catvusa.com). I have been volunteering since last fall, editing, translating, and other needed English. I do enjoy it as it lets me learn more about the history of every region and improve my knowledge of the Czech language.

I still am using the Věstník in my lessons for reading exercises and teaching my students more about the heritage in the USA. One of my student’s name is Hanus He will enjoy reading about this on Thursday, the 8th.

Lodge Incentive Guidelines

The 2017 Lodge Incentive Guidelines will include membership program incentives and be based upon premium income generated by the lodges. The formula for calculating the Enhanced Premium Refund is:

1. $1.00 for each paid-up certificate; and 2. 2.00% of the lodge’s annual earned premium.

To receive the Enhanced Premium Refund, lodges must meet the following three-point criteria:

1. Hold regular lodge meetings in accordance with Section 88 of the SPJST By-Laws and offer a wellrounded fraternal program.

2. Return all requested paperwork on time by the due date.

3. Submit regular letters/photos to the Vestnik.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood readies for picnic this Sunday

President Milton Peterson called the meeting to order on Sunday, July 2, 2017, at 2:30 p.m. The youth led the Pledge of Allegiance and SPJST motto.

A moment of silence was held for the deceased of the lodge.

Sister Georgie Soukup reported 18 members present. Sister Barbara Hykel read the minutes from the last meeting.

Sister Peggy Dobecka gave the treasurerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s report and the youth report. The youth will have bingo at the picnic.

Sister Evelyn Stuckly gave the FAC report. Brother Jerry Kucera had one new member who joined the lodge.

Sympathy cards were sent to Jodie Krizan, Julie Boeyler, Joe Krizan family, Louis Mynarcik family, Eloise Anderson, and Jerelene Lenart. A get well card was sent to LaNette Gerik.

Progressive door prize winners were Mary Neckar, Joe Krizan, and Irene Peterson.

The July meeting of SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor was called to order by President Randy Gaas. All officers were present except Treasurer Lillian Beasley and Assistant Youth Leader Mabrey Petty. Holly Narro led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Secretary Betty Suehs read the minutes of the June meeting.

They were approved as read.

Holly Narro gave the youth report and informed the lodge that the beseda dancers were on the Channel 3 news.

She also reported that Lodge 17 Youth Club will have one royalty contestant at District One YAD. Dillon Narro is running for king, and his duke will be Colby McCuller.

FAC Holly Narro gave her report and informed us of the adult retreat at the ENC. Co-Bar Manager Susan Skrabanek gave her report. The water well is completed and has been run to remove the chlorine and other impurities.

Under old business, the hall renovations were discussed. The contractor should start working on the womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s restroom by the middle of the month.

Lodge 30, Taiton hosts District Six YADâ&#x20AC;&#x2C6;this Sunday

Dear Lodge 47, Seaton Members.

I would like to personally thank you all for accepting Travis Ordogne into your membership at Lodge 47.

I am a lifelong member of Lodge 13, Dime Box. One of the things I have been looking forward to, as a mother, is having my children become youth club members in SPJST and enjoying all the

things I enjoyed as a youth member.

Travis is finally old enough, and I could not be more excited.

We moved to Temple four years ago and decided that Lodge 47, Seaton would be a good lodge to become a member of. Therefore, I cannot express how happy I am for Travis to be accepted into the lodge. Thank you, everyone.

Lodge 66, Waco celebrates Father’s Day

The meeting of Lodge 66, Waco was called to order by President John Engelke at St. Paul’s Church on Monday, June 19, 2017, at 6 p.m. with all officers present. Fifteen members and two guests, Joyce Dulock and Joann Brem, were present.

Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and motto. Members then stood for a moment of silence for deceased member Pete Gallia.

Sister Diana Engelke read a thank you note from Executive Director Buddy Edwards and Development Director Ann Owens thanking Lodge 66 for the $100 donation made to the Caritas Fan Club.

Sister Dorothy Veselka of the Entertainment Committee reported that for the next Lodge 66 meeting on July 24, sandwiches, chips, dip, dessert, and drinks will be served.

Lodge 23, Moravia Celebrates Original, 103-Year-Old Building

Lodge 23, Moravia met on Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at our lodge hall. President Elizabeth Holub opened the meeting and led the Pledge of Allegiance.

A moment of silence for departed member Marvin Cernik was observed.

Officer roll call showed all officers present. The minutes of our last meeting were read and approved.

The treasurer’s report and FAC report were given. An article was read on Flag

Day and Father’s Day and the SPJST Corpus Christi Summer Getaway to be held August 11 to 13.

President Holub welcomed District Six Director Karen Kaspar. Director Kaspar presented our lodge with a check as we are one of the first 25 lodges established, and our lodge building has been kept up all those years. She then discussed several various upcoming events.

SPJST Lodge 23, Moravia held its quarterly meeting on Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at the lodge hall. The original building is 103 years old, and out of the first 25 SPJST lodges, it is one of only four remaining original SPJST lodge buildings across the state of Texas. Members celebrated the new sign and the building’s exterior paint and upkeep. Congratulations to Lodge 23 members for their work on their beautiful lodge building. One of our members, Samantha Holub, was presented with a check from SPJST by Director Kaspar because of her role in an organization to help youth battling pediatric cancer. For The Kids is an organization for that cause. and Samantha is on the board at UTSA. Also at this meeting, we have a new sign on our lodge hall donated by members Eddie Vrana and sons Bruce and Dale Vrana. We thank them for their

generosity in donating it.

After the meeting adjourned, members enjoyed a lunch and visiting.

Sister Dorothy Veselka of the Cheer and Condolence Committee reported that she sent a get well card to Michael Galler who had a foot injury. She also congratulated John and Diana Engelke on their 43rd wedding anniversary on June 22 and Eugene and Martha Slovak on their 60th anniversary. May you all have many, many more. Happy anniversaries!

Sister Diana Engelke received a notice that Alvin Dudik of Lodge 66 is being transferred to Lodge 54, West.

Sister Diana Engelke read a resolution of sympathy on our deceased member Pete P. Gallia. May he rest in peace.

A donation of $100 for June is being made to St. Paul’s Vacation Bible School.

President Engelke reminded members of the 110th anniversary luncheon which will be held November 4 at Lodge 6, Cottonwood Hall.

Sister Diana Engelke, bookkeeper, gave the bookkeeping report.

Fifty-year pin recipients present at today’s meeting were Laurence Dale Brem, Raymond Wade Dulock, James Middlebrook, Eugene Slovak, and Rose Swank. Congratulations to all!

Sister Diana Engelke presented each father present with a scratch-off ticket for Father’s Day. Father of the Year was Michael Galler. He was presented with a gift.

Door prize winner was James Middlebrook. The 100 percent winner was Joyce Dulock.

Lodge 79 Corpus Christi celebrates Flag Day, Father’s Day

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi celebrated Father’s Day with a sausage, sauerkraut, and brisket meal with trimmings on Sunday, June 18, 2017. President Mark Rebecek called the meeting to order with the Pledge of Allegiance. We had a moment of silence for deceased members Carolyn Keim and Rene Benevidez. On the sick list are Weaver Mitchell, Judy Majek, and Lina Novosad. Our prayers are with you.

All officers were present, and we had 34 members and guests in attendance.

President Rebecek introduced guests District Seven Youth Counselor Lian Pruski and District Seven Secretary and Insurance Committee Member Wendy Pruski. Each gave some great information to our members. We always enjoy their visits.

Under new business, Ruth Marek made a motion that our monthly donation go to Search for Truth Mission. The motion was approved. Secretary Virginia Rebecek made a motion that our $500 donation go to Agape Ranch. We will try to get a speaker for our July meeting. The motion was approved.

Youth Leader Marcia Rew presented the youth club report. Eight members and guests were in attendance. Three youth are going to camp. The youth did crafts during the meeting.

Wedding anniversaries for June were Michael and Becky Urbanovsky - 26 years on the 29th and Stephen and Laura Rebecek - 10 years on the 30th. Happy anniversary to all!

by Frank Sacky and Christina Rew. We had a special $100 drawing for Father’s Day, and it was won by Rob Marek.

Next Meeting—July 16 The next meeting will be this Sunday, July 16, celebrating a belated Fourth of July. The lodge is furnishing hot dogs and buns, and members are asked to bring a side dish.

Youth Leader Regina House announced District Seven YAD was a good day for the lodge youth. Several youth will be competing at State YAD on August 5. District Seven Camp is July 19 to 23. Lodge swim party and membership drive will be July 25 at Pleasanton pool.

District Seven Director Bob Bayer spoke about State YAD in Temple.

There will be an adult retreat on September 22 to 24 at the Education and Nature Center. Some of the future plans at the ENC include adding a chapel and other projects to enhance the facility.

The lodge voted to donate $100 for the “Stuff the Bus” fundraiser. School supplies will also be collected.

Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth

The Ladies Circle of Lodge 92, Fort Worth meeting was held Tuesday, June 14, 2017, with 54 members including several guests who joined our group. It is amazing that we have so many loyal members come each month. Absent was President Cathy Simmank who was traveling to Louisiana for her annual bowling adventure. We missed her; however, Marlene Bass did a great job filling in for her and keeping us in tow.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and it was noted that this particular meeting day was Flag Day. Vice President Janet Basham read “The Garden of Daily Living.”

Business proceeded as usual with the reading of the minutes, and Margaret Laymance gave the state of our finances. She announced that kitchen supplies have been purchased that should last to the end of the year. Sunshine Chairman Marlene gave an update of those in need of good thoughts, cards, and prayers.

If there were others, I apologize that I did not get their names. Marlene then asked if the Circle wanted to have a silent auction in July. It was agreed by the members to do so. By the time this article is printed, we will have had the auction and put some coins into our bank account. Our little auctions are always fun to see what “treasures” show up.

In honor of Father’s Day, several members brought memorabilia regarding their dads to show-and-tell. Brenda Lackey brought pictures and talked about her father’s involvement with Lodge 92 early on (“he was Czech through and through”). Theresa Clay brought her dad’s pipe and a picture. She told of how they went to the New Isis Theater on Thursday nights because they gave away free groceries. Lisa Juran told of her granddad and dad’s involvement with the lodge. Alene Kercho shared that instead of being in the armed forces during the war, her dad oversaw 20 women working in a factory making items for the military. Then Lydia Alholm took the podium with her stories.

She had so many interesting facts about her father that I could not begin to repeat them all. Her apartment must be like a museum because she has so much of our history in her possession. She brought me a photocopy of a picture from Lodge 154, Fort Worth which included my mom, dad, and other family members. I am so proud of it, and I thank you, Lydia, for your thoughtfulness. It’s always so interesting to hear about the ancestors who brought our heritage to Fort Worth, how much they were loved by their families, and how so many of us are connected.

June hostesses Karen Smith, Patti Williams, Carolyn Irby, JoAnn Wilcox, Louise Collins, and Claire Rooney were recognized and thanked for serving such an outstanding meal.

Then it was time to sing the “Happy Birthday” song. Those recognized were Carolyn Belew, Garland Ellsworth, Robin Brownlee, Frank Tesar, and, Lisa Ellsworth. Here’s wishing all of you another awesome year.

“Pay attention . . . or we may lose our freedom.”

“Freedom . . . guard it with your life, America,” often warned well-known Texas Gulf Coast fraternalist and late SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje member Karel Matejka, Sr. of El Campo, Texas.

Karel was only 16 years old when the Vimperk, Sumava, Czechoslovakian Freedom Fighter was imprisoned by the Nazis following Germany’s occupation of the Sudentenland at the beginning of World War II. He spent almost eight years of his youth as a forced laborer in Hitler’s infamous concentration camps.

He was freed in 1946 by General George S. Patton’s United States Army and returned to his Czechoslovakian Karel Matejka homeland where he opened a bakery and grocery store.

Karel became outspokenly critical of Post War Russian-imposed Communism that was being forced on the freedom-loving Czechs. Czechoslovakia’s pre-World War II democratic government had been patterned after the United States of America.

After learning in 1948 that his business was to be nationalized by the Communists and the impending threat of imprisonment again “as an enemy of the State,” Karel and his wife, Gizela, escaped overnight to western Germany.

Bishop John L. Morkovsky learned of their plight as displaced European refugees and arranged for the Matejkas to come to Houston in 1950 under the National Catholic Refugees Program.

Karel and his wife were warmly welcomed into the greater Houston American-Czech community including the old SPJST Lodge 88, Houston on Studewood Drive.

He was active in the Houston Sokol movement and other benevolent Slavic organizations such as Western Fraternal Life.

The gifted singer and musician had a vast repertoire of

authentic Czech folk songs. The accomplished accordionist and drummer also loved to polka dance. He formed a Houston band which played at many special celebrations including a downtown El Campo street dance and “All Nations Festival” in 1962 when the city became “Capital of Texas for 24 hours” as designated by “Governor-for-a-Day” Culp Krueger, President Pro Tempore of the Texas Senate at that time and owner of KULP Radio and the El Campo Leader-News-Svoboda.

A member of the SPJST Lodge 88 Choral Group and Drama Club, he was cast in major roles of many Czech language divadlos — theatrical presentations including operettas such as Kmoch’s “Muziky, Muziky” and other entertaining Czechoslovakian dramas and comedies staged at Lodge 88 and in other Texas communities.

Karel was honored in 1999 as one of the founders of the Saints Cyril and Methodius Slavic Heritage Festival, which is one of Houston’s oldest ethnic festivals.

He often expressed his worry that many Americans are apathetic about the precious liberty he and his wife finally enjoyed in Texas.

“We must pay attention or one day, we may lose our freedom here,” cautioned Karel on July 4, 2003, when he single-handedly staged an Independence Day event in El Campo after learning no local public observance was scheduled.

One of his happiest days was on November 12, 1958, when he became a naturalized United States citizen. His Czech citizenship had been revoked by the Communists, but President Vaclav Havel re-instated it in 2000 so Karel held dual citizenship during his final years.

Karel passed away on Friday, June 2, 2006, on his 83rd birthday.

Cool a Senior’s Home

Getting Help to Cool a Senior’s Home It’s summer, and it is hot out there! If you are a senior or a caregiver for a senior, you need an air conditioner to cool a senior’s home and live comfortably when the temperature hits the upper ‘90s.

Elderly people are more vulnerable to the dangers of high temperatures. They do not adjust well to sudden changes in temperature. They are more likely to have chronic medical conditions that change normal responses to heat. Also, seniors are more likely to take prescriptions which make them vulnerable to heat-related diseases. Diuretics which affect water balance, psychotropic medications which affect behavior and understanding, and medications which affect perspiration can cause a greater risk when someone gets overheated.

Heat Advice In high temperatures, electric fans may provide some comfort at home, but do not sufficiently cool a senior’s home to prevent heat-related illness. Even a few hours of air conditioning during the hottest times of the day will considerably reduce that risk. If the senior does not or cannot keep the home a comfortable temperature, then take them to a senior center, a mall, or a public library for a few hours. During the long, hot summer

months, daily attendance at an adult day care center or a senior center program could provide air conditioning and attention to their needs during the day, and keep them out of danger from heat.

Caregivers should check on the elderly when the temperature is high.

Be sure that the temperature in the home is comfortable.

Make certain that they are drinking fluids like water, not alcoholic beverages.

Be sure that they can cool down with a cool shower or bath, or even just a spray bottle of ice cold water.

Make sure that they have an air conditioner that works efficiently and that it is turned on where they are in the home during the hottest part of the day.

Check their fridge to see if they have ice and cool beverages there, and some meal choices that don’t require heating up the whole house.

Helpful programs Cooling assistance programs are federally funded programs operated by local government agencies which help people in need to control the temperature of the home in the summer. Low-income seniors age 60 and older, persons who have a disability or a health condition, or persons who have a child under age 6 will qualify for assistance through these programs. Such assistance can help the resident with their electric bills, or with a repair bill for an air conditioner. If a client does not have a working air conditioner, the program may provide a window unit.

To find such programs in your community, you should contact agencies such as:

• Your electric company, which probably can reduce your payments seasonally; • The Area Agency on Aging; • The County or City health department; • A local senior center.

Don’t let a senior sweat it out in a sweltering home. Heat-related diseases are too risky for seniors. Make a call to get help to cool a senior’s home if needed. Take action to find a cool solution for that senior’s hot home.

We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Hvezda Texasu, No. 47, Seaton, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed member, LOUIS JOHN KOHUTEK. Funeral service for Louis John Kohutek, 89, of Oscar was at 7 p.m.

Thursday, June 29, 2017, at Seaton Brethren Church in Seaton, Texas, with Pastor Denise Mikeska and Reverend Frank Simcik officiating.

Burial was pri- Louis Kohutek vate.

Mr. Kohutek died Monday, June 26 at a nursing facility in Temple.

He was born on October 3, 1927, in Milam County to Edwin and Mary Adamek Kohutek. He married Ruth Helen Lesikar on August 19, 1950, at the home of Reverend and Mrs. Frank Kostohryz, and at that time, he also became a member of Seaton Brethren Church.

He worked in banking establishments for 41 years. After he retired, Louis was secretary for RVOS Lodge 5, Seaton from 1955 to 1989 and a sales representative for RVOS from 1989 to 2007. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton and was entertainment chairman and hall manager for several years. He enjoyed being around people and was very personable.

Mr. Kohutek thoroughly enjoyed and was an adamant player of straight dominoes. He knew exactly what the other person had in their hands before they even knew. He and his wife enjoyed dancing. His hobby was collecting caps, and he had a large collection. He enjoyed farming and being on the tractor.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother Willie E. Kohutek.

Survivors are wife Ruth Kohutek of Oscar; daughter Karen Beeler and husband Mike of Yukon, Oklahoma; daughter Donna McEntire and husband Larry of Oscar; grandsons Ryan Guidry of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Jared Guidry and Travis Guidry, both of Yukon, Oklahoma, and Russ Guidry and

wife Korey of Clinton, Illinois; greatgranddaughter Lainey Mae Guidry; another great-grandchild on the way; sisters-in-law Adeline Kohutek of Cameron and Georgia Navratil of Temple.

Visitation was from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, June 29, at Seaton Brethren Church.

Louis A. Mynarcik, Sr., age 91, of West, passed away late Saturday afternoon, June 17, 2017, at Providence Hospice Place in Waco.

A rosary was recited at 6 p.m.

Wednesday, June 21 at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel, followed by visitation until 8 p.m. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, L. Mynarcik, Sr. June 22 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption in West with Reverend Ed Karasek as celebrant. Military graveside rites followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery, conducted by West Veterans Honor Guard.

Louis was born April 20, 1926, in West, the son of Otillie (Macicek) and Joseph J. Mynarcik, Sr. He attended Ross and West schools. Louis served his country in the United States Army, receiving his medical discharge in 1956.

He served in the CBI Theatre, traveled the Burma Road, made Sergeant First Class, and received three bronze stars.

On November 25, 1947, he was united in marriage to Eleanor Hlavenka in West. Eleanor preceded him in death on September 16, 2012. He worked for William Cameron Company for several years after returning from the military.

member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption. He was also PTA president of St. Mary’s School and Cub Master, a member of KJT Society 31, Knights of Columbus Council 2305, American Legion Post 478, a lifetime member of VFW Post 4819, and DAV Chapter 215 and Commander Club.

Louis enjoyed farming, tending to his cattle, listening to Czech music, and singing Czech songs. He also loved hunting and fishing with his relatives and friends.

Louis is preceded in death by his parents; brothers Edmund Mynarcik, William “Bill” Mynarcik, Dan Mynarcik, and Joseph Mynarcik; sisters Agnes Zatopek and Victoria Cvikel; and brother-in-law Bill Hlavenka.

Survivors include children Ellouise Anderson of West and Louis Mynarcik, Jr. and wife Tonja “Sissy” of Lorena; grandchildren Nathan John Mynarcik and wife Jodi and Raychel Maria Mynarcik; great-grandsons Kade Joseph and Landon Louis; sister Lillie Jane Popp and husband Kenneth; brother-inlaw Adolph Zatopek; sisters-in-law Rosemary Mynarcik and Gladys Hlavenka; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Pallbearers were Bill Hlavenka, Joey Hlavenka, Nathan Mynarcik, Robert Mynarcik, Michael Mynarcik, and David Mynarcik. Honorary pallbearers were his nieces and nephews.

Jeralyn was chosen Nada Citizen of the Year in Jeralyn Prihoda 2009. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Catholic Life, Nocturnal Adoration Society, Catholic Daughters, Christian Mothers, and SPJST Lodge 30, Taiton.

She is survived by daughters Janice Thompson and husband Gale of Nada and Barbara Dettling and husband Russell of El Campo; son Anthony Prihoda and wife Debbie of El Campo; grandchildren Kristin Jackson and husband Freddie, Kevin Thompson, Kalie Molina and husband Mike, Derek, Brett, and Julia Prihoda, and Jordan and Zachery Dettling; and great-grandchild Cambri Molina.

We, the members of SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the family of CLARENCE JOE FILIP, longtime resident of Lake Jackson, Texas, who passed away on Monday, June 5, 2017. He was 76.

Clarence was born October 15, 1940, in Wharton and graduated from Wharton High School.

Growing up, he enjoyed working alongside his father in the family grocery store, Filip’s Grocery in El Campo. He and his wife moved to Lake Jackson in Clarence Filip 1966.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton. He was very active in St. Michael’s Church in Lake Jackson and the Knights of Columbus. He was the Grand Knight, District Deputy, and a 4th Degree member and was a KC member for 57 years.

He was chairman of St. Michael’s Church picnic for many years and founded Monday night rosary in 1988, which he led for many years. He and his longtime friend Art Vandaveer were in charge of placing pro-life crosses in front of the church for many years. He also led many tours to Medjugorje.

Clarence enjoyed his large extended family and was always cooking at family gatherings and family reunions, and he was the life of the party. He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, and the great outdoors. His passion was deer hunting and playing dominos at deer camp. He

loved his Houston Astros – ‘Go Stros.’

Clarence was preceded in death by his parents; and brother Joe. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Rose Marie; and children Donna Orr (Brad), Lynn Bowers (Brian), Carlton Filip (Sheri) and Terryl (Kelli) Filip; 20 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother Richard Filip; and sister Dorothy Lolley.

Visitation was Wednesday, June 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. at St. Michael Catholic Church with a vigil service starting at 7 p.m. followed by rosary.

Funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 8 at St. Michael Catholic Church in Lake Jackson with Monsignor Leo Wleczyk officiating. Graveside service was at 3 p.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in Blessing.

In Memory of Angelyn Malina

Angelyn Marie (Elsik) Malina, age 103, of Shiner, passed away on Wednesday, June 21, 2017, at Twin Pines Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Victoria, Texas, just six days shy of her 104th birthday.

She was the third child of Joe L. and Frances (Mikeska) Elsik, born on June 27, 1913, near the community of Midway in Lavaca County.

On November 11, 1936, she married Frank C. Malina at the home of her parents in DaCosta. They settled at the community Angelyn Malina of Henkhaus and were owners of a store, dance hall, and rodeo arena. Later, they relocated to a farm closer to Shiner where she resided for almost 60 years. She became an employee of Williford Drug and is remembered for her delicious milkshakes and doughnuts, and her friendliness. Her husband Frank passed away on September 12, 1982.

She was a member of SPJST Lodge 63, Sweet Home. She was also a member of the Shiner Brethren Church, held many offices, and was very involved in getting a historical marker for the church. She was a caretaker of the Shiner Brethren Cemetery into her 90s.

With the birth of Levi James Malina in June 2016, Angelyn became a great-great-grandmother.

Malina; parents Joe L. and Frances Mikeska Elsik; son Daniel Joe Malina, Sr.; sisters Teresia Rosalie and Blanche Evelyn Elsik, Frances Hedwig (Fannie) Fleeman, Lydia Rose Raven, Milady Evelyn Laza, and Marie Elsik; and brothers Joe Thomas, George Leon, and Daniel J. Elsik.

Serving as pallbearers were Daniel J. Malina, Jr., Dewayne C. Malina, Frank E. Malina, Jr., Scott T. Sorrells, Holdyn W. Malina, Peyton T. Sorrells, and Robert G. Sims, Jr. Honorary pallbearers were her granddaughter; granddaughter-in-law; great-granddaughters; great-grandsons; nieces; nephews; and friend Travis Loos.

Visitation was at Thiele Cooper Funeral Home on Saturday, June 24. Private burial service was at Shiner Brethren Cemetery on Monday, June 26 with Reverend Jim Pearson of Victoria officiating.

District Six YAD this Sunday in Taiton

Dear Members, District Six Youth Achievement Day is this Sunday, July 16, 2017, at Taiton Community Center, and you are invited to attend and enjoy the day with the youth of District Six. The day begins with craft, talent, and royalty registration from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Lodge 30, Taiton will serve barbecue beef on a bun and chips for lunch from 11 a.m. to noon. The program will begin at 12:30 p.m. and include individual and group talent competition and royalty speeches. A silent auction of homemade pies will be held in the afternoon. The pies are baked by youth who are competing in the food category competition. Awards will be presented later in the day, and the 2017-2018 District Six Royalty will be crowned.

Bring a towel and a friend for an evening of fun! The pool is reserved for Lodge 202 Youth Club from 7 to 10 p.m. We will have sausage wraps, drinks, and lots of snacks. Bring your water guns and pool toys. Lifeguards will be on duty.

SPJST State Youth Achievement Day is Saturday, August 5, 2017, at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple, Texas. Youth are encouraged to participate in the contest. The rules as posted on page 25 of the Youth Club Handbook are:

State YAD Special Category Contest The Special Category Contest is held at State YAD each year. The contest is open to all youth club members. Preregistration with a Special Category Entry Card is required. Entry cards must be returned to the State Youth Director no later than the Wednesday prior to State YAD. The Special Category craft varies each year and is announced during the contest.

Age Groups The age of the youth on June 1, 2017, will determine the youth’s age group.

Hello and welcome to Radio Prague's Czech learning series Czech

by Numbers, which explores numbers in the Czech language and their use in everyday speech. Today, we are here with lesson number eight - lekce číslo osm.

The Czech word for eight - osm sounds nothing like the English. However, it is very similar to its equivalents in other Slavonic languages.

The figure of eight is osmička and the word is used in the same way as in English, for example in figure-skating. In a different sport, osma or osmiveslice is an eight-oar, an eight.

But back to osmička, a figure of eight.

The word is also used to describe a wisdom tooth, because it is the eighth tooth from the middle.

The ordinal number eighth is osmý for the masculine, osmá for the feminine and osmé for the neuter gender. The expression osmý div světa - the eighth wonder of the world - describes something extraordinary and novel.

An eighth, as in an eighth part of a whole, is osmina. In music, osmina means an eighth note, or a quaver, a note played for one eighth the duration of a whole note.

The word osminka is the diminutive form of osmina, but means the same. If you ask in a shop for osminka másla - literally an "eighth of butter" you will get a 125-gram cube of butter, an eighth of a kilogram.

Czech Heritage Museum welcomes Santas, Mrs. Clauses

Lone Star Santas and Mrs. Clauses visited the Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center in Temple, Texas, on Monday, July 3, 2017. They were in the area to ride in Belton’s Fourth of July parade and visit local places including the children’s hospital. Pictured with them is Kenny Lange, front, left, who is a member of the CHMGC staff. Lone Star Santas is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization of men and women who live in or work in Texas and portray Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus, Elves, and helpers.

Santas can be either real bearded or designer bearded because it is what is in their hearts that matters. The organization was formed for the exchange of ideas, networking, helping each other, and to provide general camaraderie. When the tornado in Joplin, Missouri, happened in 2011, several members saw the opportunity to reach out to children and families affected by the natural disaster. Monies were donated, toys were donated and purchased by members, and a Convoy of Toys was organized. This was the group’s first call to action. The only rule for this group is to talk and act the way Santa, Mrs. Claus, Elves, and helpers would.
