For her efforts, Megan will be receiving a $100 Visa gift card. Congratulations to Megan for submitting the winning essay, and thanks to all SPJST youth for participating in this year’s contest.

It started so long ago two hundred and forty years, and still today the sight of it can bring some folks to tears.

We love to see our home colors, the red, the white, and the blue.

It means something special to each of us, to me and to you.

Through all the time that has passed, its spirit has never changed, from Philadelphia to Texas to the great fielded plains.

But Old Glory did not just pop suddenly out of the sky.

It was Betsy Ross who sewed it and today it is still flying high.

We salute it every morning, from its stars to its stripes, and it never gets old or boring, it always feels so right.

This patriotic symbol represents sacrifice, history and hope, and when we sing the Star Spangled Banner, we honor it with every note.

So thank you, United States Flag, flying high above the trees, for showing us down here below what it truly means to be free.

he “Stars and Stripes,” the official National symbol of the United States of America was authorized by congress on Saturday, June 14, 1777, in the fifth item of the day’s agenda.

The entry in the journal of the Continental Congress 1774-1789 Vol. Vlll 1777 reads “Resolved that the flag of the thirteen United States be Thirteen stripes alternate red and white: that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”

In Waubeka, Wisconsin, in 1885, Bernard John Cigrand a 19-year-old school teacher in a one room school placed a 10-inch 38-star flag in an inkwell and had his students write essays on what the flag meant to them.

He called June 14th the flag’s birthday. Stony Hill School is now a historical site. From that day on, Bernard J. Cigrand dedicated himself to inspire not only his students but also all Americans in the real meaning and majesty of our flag.

Sincere Sympathy We extend heartfelt sympathy to Districts Four and Seven Fraternal Field Manager Bobby Davis and his family. Bobby’s mother, Robbie Lou Parker Davis, passed away on Friday, June 2 in San Angelo. A graveside service was held Tuesday. June 6 in Bangs Cemetery in Bangs.

We extend heartfelt sympathy to the family of Patsy (Kubena) Pflughaupt of Lodge 1, Fayetteville.

Sister Patsy passed away on May 24.

She was the granddaughter of J.R. Kubena, who was one of the founders of SPJST and known as the “Daddy of SPJST.” Her obituary is on page 14 of this week’s Věstník.

Bremond Polish Festival set for June 23, 24

The Bremond Polish Festival celebrates its 30th year in 2017! Enjoy two days of Polish culture in the Polish capital of Texas on Friday, June 23 and Saturday, June 24.

The event will include lots of family fun like the famous Polish pickle run, a parade, food and craft vendors, barbecue cookoff, and much more. Brave Combo will play on Friday night. The Westernaires and Brian Marshall and Friends play in the White Eagle Music Hall on Saturday, and Dr. Jim Mazurkiewicz, the Wawel Dancers, and the Jodie Mikula Orchestra take turns performing on the Main Street Stage all day on Saturday.

SSCM Parish sets June 25 dinner, dance

S.S. Cyril and Methodius Parish Hall, located at 500 West Davilla in Granger, Texas, will host a chicken dinner and battle dance on Sunday, June 25, 2017.

Fried chicken and trimmings will be served beginning at 11 a.m. Adult plates are $9, and child plates are $5. Takeout plates will be available inside at the kitchen counter for $9. Drive-thru adult plates will be available from $9 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sandwiches, chili dogs, and nachos will be available from 2 to 8 p.m.

Lodge Incentive Guidelines

The 2017 Lodge Incentive Guidelines will include membership program incentives and be based upon premium income generated by the lodges. The formula for calculating the Enhanced Premium Refund is:

1. $1.00 for each paid-up certificate; and 2. 2.00% of the lodge’s annual earned premium.

To receive the Enhanced Premium Refund, lodges must meet the following three-point criteria:

1. Hold regular lodge meetings in accordance with Section 88 of the SPJST By-Laws and offer a wellrounded fraternal program.

2. Return all requested paperwork on time by the due date.

3. Submit regular letters/photos to the Vestnik.

Under the supervision of the Vice President, the candidate will oversees sales and marketing programs of SPJST; establish sales quotas for territories; assist in managing budgets; evaluate sales performance; and manage and develop marketing programs and materials such as advertising, event support, and online promotions.

Qualifications The position requires a bachelor’s degree, or equivalent work experience, with a minimum of 3 years experience in life insurance sales and marketing. Candidate must rely on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Candidate will perform a variety of tasks while leading and directing the work of others. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.

District News

District Seven presents spring meeting minutes

District Seven hosted its spring meeting on Sunday, March 19, 2017, at SPJST

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi.

Youth members presented the colors, and led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Education and Nature Center Director Howard gave his report. Camp Director Jeb is getting the camp ready for the camping season. He has several large groups coming in and is streamlining all the camping sessions. They will have a new chef in the kitchen with two full-time helpers.

Czech Heritage Museum Director Bertrand gave her report. They are still playing taroks two times a month. They are working on the car show on May 6.

They will be selling items from the museum. The next board meeting is April 10.

She will hold the drawing at the End of Summer Getaway. She will be sending out letters later asking for prizes.

S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living Centers’ Director Sijansky reported that they opened the new rest home in Taylor. He stated that it looks very nice, like a four-star hotel.

He reported that the first rest home was opened in 1956 and that the first administrator was a member of Lodge 79, Corpus Christi. He will stay on as a director.

The meeting was called to order by President Howard. Lodge 79 President Mark Rebecek welcomed all to the meeting. President Howard introduced the guests: Supreme Lodge Vice President Hiram Dixon and fiancé Machelle, Fraternal Field Manager Bobby Davis, and District Seven Director Bob Bayer and wife Polly.

Second Vice President Jerry Sijansky lit a candle with three wicks - one for our deceased members, one for our military, and one for our living members. He read all of the names of our deceased members of District Seven since our last meeting.

Minutes from the 2016 spring officers meeting, the 2016 spring meeting, and the 2016 fall meeting were read and approved.

The financial report was given by Treasurer Hoggard.

Recognition of 50-, 75-year members, age 96, and age 100 year members were read. Liz Bielefeld, a 50-year member, and Jerry Sijansky, a 75-year member, were present.

DYC Lian Pruski gave her financial report. She reported that the cereal drive ends April 1.The district youth are holding

a raffle with winners drawn today. The youth leaders workshop will be next weekend. On April 1, she will host the youth development workshop at Lodge 107, Floresville. They will also be having a lock-in that day.

Director Bayer mentioned that he made a donation to each youth club in the district for the cereal drive. Question was brought up about the service charge that the youth bank accounting received. She stated she would bring it up in new business.

Publication Committee report was given by alternate committee member Kathryn Marek. Insurance Committee report was given by committee member Wendy Pruski, and By-Law Committee report was given by committee member Oscar Korus.

Supreme Lodge Vice President Dixon presented a check for $4,000 to Treasurer Hoggard for the district fund and a check to DYC Pruski for $750 for the youth allocation. He reported that the surplus is back up from $13 million to $20 million.

He talked about new pricing on some policies to make us more competitive, We are working to grow the SPJST. Vice President Dixon led us in the table prayer and a barbecue brisket and sausage plate with all the trimmings was enjoyed by all.

The meeting reconvened after lunch, Director Bayer reported that in 2016, a total of 153 applications were issued in District Seven. Earned premiums were up 26 percent over 2015. Forty-four sales agents sold for us, and 21 had no sales.

Ten agents were in the top 50 in earned premium; seven were in the top 50 in annualized premiums. Chester Jenke was number 11, and Miguel Rodriguez was number 15. Miguel was number 5 in the state for earned premium; Chester was number 8; and Ralph Juarez was number 15 in the state. He was asked to check on how the other districts elect or if there are term limits on the Czech Heritage Museum, Education and Nature Center, and Rest Home Directors.

Fraternal Field Manager Bobby Davis reported that from January 1 to February 28, issued apps were up 47 percent, earned premium is down 23 percent, and annual premiums are up 85 percent.

Miguel is first in applications and Wendy is second.

District Awards Recognition Fraternalists of the year Frances McDonald of Lodge 117, Robstown, and Amanda Hoggard of Lodge 202, Jourdanton were each presented a gift to show they are appreciated.

Gold Star Lodges recognized were Lodge 79, Corpus Christi; Lodge 107, Floresville; Lodge 133, San Antonio; Lodge 185, New Braunfels; and Lodge 258, Seguin.

Lodge awards were presented to Lodge 117, Robstown and Lodge 202, Jourdanton.

Agents awards went to Wendy Pruski - top agent in certificates issued; Javier Mora - top agent in insurance issued; and Chester Jenke - top agent in annualized premiums.

Lifetime Achiever Awards were presented to Marcia Rew and Robert C. Marek, both of Lodge 79, Corpus Christi and Roy Haag of Lodge 185, New Braunfels.

Cash prize winners were: sales agent Jerry Sijansky; adult member - ?; and youth member - Christian Lynn.

Old Business Glen made a motion to donate $200 to Lodge 79, Corpus Christi to help defray the cost of the kolaches for the end of summer getaway. The motion was seconded by Bettie. The check was presented to Jerry Sijansky and Marcus Rebecek.

The prize drawing will continue at the end of summer getaway.

New Business We discussed getting a smaller storage unit. If we go down to a 5 by 10 we could save $40 a month, but we would need to purchase a shelving unit to put all the totes in. That would be about a $100 one-time purchase. Bob made a motion to go down to the smaller unit and buy the shelving.

The motion was seconded by Roy. On the youth bank, it was brought up by the DYC to find a bank that does not charge fees for nonprofit organizations.

Frances McDonald made a motion to change the bank account to a more user friendly bank, seconded by Roy. Frances made a motion to donate a $50 prize to the end of summer getaway prize drawing, seconded by Liz. Audit Committee member Frank Sijansky reported all books were in order and balanced.

Silent auction total raised was $277 to be kept by the district.

Lodge 1, Fayetteville invites all to a turkey, dressing, and all the trimmings drive-through meal on Thursday, June 22, 2017, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Old Fire Station on the Fayetteville Square.

Lodge 17, New Tabor continues hall remodeling project

Lodge 17, New Tabor held its monthly meeting on Sunday, June 4, 2017 at the lodge hall. The meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. by President Randy Gaas with all officers present except Treasurer Lillian Beasley, Reporter Kyle Skrabanek, and Youth Leader/FAC Holly Narro. Ted Dusek led all in the Pledge of Allegiance. Resolutions of sympathy were read for departed lodge brothers Daniel Ginzel, Frank Hejl, and Edwin Schumacher.

Minutes of the May meeting were read and approved. Randy Gaas gave the treasurer’s report.

Randy gave the FAC report reminding everyone of the End of Summer Getaway, Flag Day, and the weekend retreat to be held at Cooper Farm in September. Susan Skrabanek gave the hall report. She reported that the new water

well is complete, and they are waiting to plug the old well. As soon as it dries out enough, this will be done.

Under correspondence, President Gaas read a transfer request from Carolyn Brinkmann. A motion was made and approved to accept Carolyn into our lodge. We are excited to have her join our lodge.

Under old business the remodeling project was discussed. A motion was made and approved to proceed with phase 2, remodeling the bathrooms, kitchen, and bar area as soon as our contractor is available. A motion was made and approved to use money from our CD to pay for the project and return that money once we have our fundraiser.

Save the Date—November 18 Under new business, the Ben Trcalek Memorial Fundraiser was discussed. It is set for Saturday, November 18. Susan will get with Helen Paul to get a timeline for getting this fundraiser going.

Next Meeting—July 2 There was no further business, and the meeting was adjourned at 2:45 p.m. until our next meeting which will be on Sunday, July 2.

Lodge 18, Elgin reports on activities

School is out for the summer. It seems that the older we get, the faster the time goes.

The SPJST summer camp is getting ready for all the district outings. I know a few youth members who are really looking forward to camp. We are still trying to get the youth club active here in Elgin. So far, no luck.

We did have a great dance on Sunday, May 7. The Ennis Czech Boys did a great job. Great music, guys; keep up the good work.

We have Glen Collins on Sunday, June 4 and Chris Rybak on Sunday, June 11. We always have fun with Chris and his family.

The Corpus Christi Getaway is just around the bend. Everyone who attends has a great time. All details are in the Věstník.

We received a thank you card from Elgin Library for the donation we gave.

We had only one scholarship winner - Randon Whitsitt. We did not have an SPJST member apply.

We send get well wishes to Deliliah Wilson. We miss you and hope to see you back soon.

Lodge Karel Jonáš No. 28, East Bernard May meeting report

Dear Members, Lodge Karel Jonáš No. 28, East Bernard met for its regular meeting on Sunday, May 21, 2017, at Wharton County Library at 12 noon.

All officers present honored guests, and State FAC Mr. Frank Horak of the Home Office.

President Glenn Kaminsky called the meeting to order. He said grace, and all said the Pledge of Allegiance. He recessed the meeting for the meal and social in honor of 50- and 75-year members.

When the meeting resumed, a moment of silent prayer was observed for our deceased members - Rudy Vrana passed away since the last meeting.

Helen Kelner asked Mr. Horak about steps to take to going to bi-monthly

meetings. He gave a report.

Glenn Kaminsky reported we will be co-hosting the District Six Fall Meeting with Lodge 151, Wharton on October 7, 2017 at Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje hall.

Glenn will be getting with members to see when the next meeting will be at Lodge 151 to start plans.

Helen Kelner gave the treasurer’s report, which was approved as read.

Linda Bratina reported on upcoming fraternal activities.

Mr. Horak reported on upcoming fraternal activities, and why President Brian Vanicek was unable to attend - he is in La Grange.

Old business was that the new hall chairs are here, and plans to sell the old chairs are being decided.

Lights for the hall sign should be hooked up next week.

We discussed the fall fundraiser.

Plans are being decided, and job duties have been divided.

Lodge 48, Beyersville member Hannah Faltesek graduated from San Angelo on May 13, and she was on the Dean’s List.

Officers and members voted in new member Della Renee Miksch.

Juanette Meiske celebrated a birthday on May 10. Shannon and Michelle Newsom celebrated 17 years of marriage on May 20.

We observed a moment of silence for deceased members John Brodecky, Jr. and Maria A. Rivera. On the sick list were Judy Majek recovering from surgery and Weaver Mitchell.

He also encouraged all who do volunteer work to turn in the number of hours to him. Our lodge gets credit for volunteering. Vice President/FAC Sijansky presented member Dorothy McCoy a gift card in appreciation for decorating our tables at the meetings.

There was no unfinished business.

Under new business, President Rebecek read off three transfers to our lodge.

They were voted on and approved.

Secretary Virginia Rebecek made a motion that our monthly donation go to the Driscoll Children’s Telethon. It was approved.

Youth Leader Marcia Rew gave the youth club report. She had seven members and guests in attendance. The youth did the memorial project in the Vestnik and made magnets.

Lodge 187 Round Rock members join hands

We started by talking about our Join Hands Day project and all the huge, wonderful donations that we received.

We thanked all who were able to help.

A big thank you to Greg and Jennifer McCarthy for making the delivery to Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter.

We discussed the upcoming youth summer camp and the summer getaway.

We also discussed and voted on helping out the SPJST camp.

Thank you to Deborah for reading a thank you note from one of our charities that we helped out. I just love to hear how SPJST helps the community in so many ways.

For entertainment, Jennave Fuchs read about how tears of laughter are so different from tears of pain. I personally loved it . . . just wish more people were there to hear her story. She then read some hilarious jokes. Let’s just say, I will always remember the yard sale joke

Lodge 219, El Paso to host June 24 pool party

Dear Members, SPJST Lodge 219, El Paso will host a pool party on Saturday, June 24, 2017, from 6 to 9 p.m. at W.W. Cowan Indoor Pool, located at 8100 Independence Drive in El Paso, Texas 79907.

Hot dogs and hamburgers will be served from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The evening will include family and children’s entertainment.

Any guest invited by you who attends the party and is not an SPJST member will be participating for a surprise prize drawing.

Admission is two canned food items per person at the door, but if you can bring more than two — it’s better!

We will donate the canned food items to the food pantry or to a needy family.

Lodge 202 Jourdanton awards scholarships

Lodge 202, Jourdanton met Sunday, June 4, 2017, at Jourdanton Community Center with 27 members and guests attending. Flag Bearer Katlyn Polasek led the Pledge of Allegiance. Silence was observed for deceased members and in honor of the armed forces.

President James House welcomed everyone.

SPJST State Queen Amanda Hoggard gave the table prayer. Cold cuts were served.

The lodge will donate $100 to the Jourdanton American Pride Day celebration on July 4. A gift basket will be donated to the silent auction to benefit the Mark Jensen family.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Kathleen Polasek noted June 14 is Flag Day, and Fathers’ Day is June 18. The Vestnik editor is asking for responses concerning the publication.

Youth Leader Regina House presented information about District Seven YAD that will be hosted by Lodge 202 on June 25.

Lodge scholarships were presented to graduating seniors, who were also active youth club members - Amanda Hoggard, Fredrick Lopez, and Liliana Wiederhold.

Door prize winners were Maecee De La Garza, Kayla Fair, Bettie House, and Kathleen Polasek.

The meeting adjourned.

Memories of my Dad In memory I recollect the days that used to be; when I was Daddy’s little girl and sat upon his knee.

I would tag along beside him when he worked in the barn; And I was always learning while living on the farm.

In Memory of Patsy (Kubena) Pflughaupt

Patsy Ruth (Kubena) Pflughaupt, age 91, of Fayetteville, Texas, entered the gates of heaven on Wednesday, May 24, 2017.

Patsy, granddaughter of J.R. Kubena, who is known as the “Daddy of SPJST,” was born in Fayetteville on October 26, 1925, in her grandfather’s home. Her Patsy Pflughaupt parents were Rudolph R. and Minnie Mae (Spacek) Kubena. On May 21, 1944, Patsy married Glenn Pflughaupt in the home of her birth.

While her husband was fighting overseas during World War II, Patsy taught in one of several one-room school houses. After Glenn returned from the war, they started a conservation contracting business with Patsy working side-by-side with her husband building the business. Patsy and Glenn enjoyed touring the hill country, attending the local county fairs, and listening to musical artists. Later in life, Patsy enjoyed playing bingo as a resident at River Oaks in Columbus. Her greatest joy was serving others. While residing at River Oaks, Patsy “watched over” her daughter-in-law’s mother and was known as the candy lady as she always had something sweet to give to those who visited.

Patsy is survived by son Ronald “Ronnie” Pflughaupt (SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville Treasurer) and wife Debra (SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville Secretary) of Fayetteville; daughters Sharon Fritsch (SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville President) and husband Scott of Fayetteville and Betty Gail Guthmann and husband Warren of Columbus; sister Kaye Walla of Houston; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Glenn; son Glenn R. “Butch”; and sisters Bettie Schielack and Shirley Cassell.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Fayetteville as well as serving SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville faithfully for many years.

Pallbearers for the service were grandsons Cody Fritsch, Clayton Fritsch, Matthew Guthmann, and Jagger

Wessels and nephews Jeff Pflughaupt and Paul Schielack. Honorary pallbearers were granddaughters Cassandra Staggs, Carley Aten, and Kelsey Guthmann.

The family requests donations to St. Paul Lutheran Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 87, Fayetteville, Texas 78940 or SPJST Ballpark Fund, 507 E. Main Street, Fayetteville, Texas 78940.

Services were under the direction of Koenig and Strickland Funeral Home of La Grange.

In Memory of Keifer Marshall, Jr.

Keifer Marshall, Jr., age 91, of Temple, Texas, died Sunday, May 28, 2017, in a local hospital. Funeral service was held at 10 a.m.

Friday, June 2 at Christ Episcopal Church with Reverend Justin Yawn and Reverend Mark Wilburn officiating.

Private family burial with military honors was held at Hill- Keifer Marshall, Jr. crest Cemetery.

Visitation was from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home.

Robert William Keifer Marshall, Jr. was born September 24, 1925, in Temple to Robert William Keifer Marshall and Azalee Matthews Marshall. He was a graduate of Temple High School, where he was a letterman and captain of the football team and was selected to play in the 1943 Texas High School AllStar Game. He went on to attend the University of Texas, lettering in football, where, as a true freshman, played all 60 minutes of the 1944 Cotton Bowl Classic. In addition to playing football, he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and the Silver Spurs.

While in college, Keifer met the love of his life, Sammie, who was voted the “Sweetheart” of The University of Texas by the student body. In 1996, he was elected to the Longhorn Hall of Honor at The University of Texas. He was also a member of the Chancellor’s Council of the University of Texas System.

He was also a member of SPJST Lodge 87, Temple where he served as a

top producing sales agent for several years.

Keifer served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, 3rd Marine Division, 9th Regiment, F Company, 2nd Battalion, and was a rifleman.

As a Marine, Keifer first fought on Guam, then Iwo Jima, where, out of his company of 250 men, only few survived.

Keifer was a devoted civic, business, and community leader, serving many leadership roles throughout his life, and enjoying a respected career in the insurance industry. In 1950, he founded Keifer Marshall Insurance, and was a successful businessman in many endeavors. His professional accomplishments include graduating from the SMU Institute of Insurance Marketing, being a Life and Qualifying member of the Million Dollar Round Table, member and former president of the Heart of Texas Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors, and a member of the Texas Leaders Round Table Insurance Association. Keifer was also a rancher and raised cattle on a family ranch east of Temple, which was one of his most loved pastimes.

Among the many civic and community roles and honors throughout Keifer’s life, he most notably served first as a city councilman for the City of Temple then served two terms as the Mayor of Temple. He also served as a member of the board of directors for the Scott and White Health and Maintenance Organization, Extraco Banks, Cultural Activities Center, and Temple College Foundation, among many others. Keifer was also a former president of the Board of Regents for Temple College, was an Eagle Scout, and was a member and former Vestryman of Christ Episcopal Church of Temple.

Of all of Keifer’s accomplishments, it is widely recognized that he was most proud of his 69-year marriage to his best friend Sammie followed closely by his love for his son, his grandchildren, and his three great-grandchildren.

Keifer is survived by his wife Sammie Farrier Marshall; grandsons Rob Marshall and wife Christina Marshall of Temple and Patrick Marshall of Temple; stepgranddaughter Kim Combs of Louisville, Kentucky; great-grandchildren Keifer Marshall, V, Lily Marshall, and Weston Marshall, all of Temple; and step-greatgrandchildren Jessica Dentinger and husband David of Fort Myers, Florida, and Isabella Combs of Louisville, Kentucky.

He was preceded in death by son Robert William Keifer Marshall, III. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Christ Episcopal Church, 300 North Main, Temple.

Mary was born February 21, 1922, to Vincent and Elizabeth Gorka. She was preceded in death by her father Vincent Gorka; mother Elizabeth Gorka; five brothers; five sisters; husband of almost 50 years August V i n c e n t Mary Roznovsky Roznovsky; and son Gary Roznovsky.

Mary was a member of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston. She was also a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, where she served on the altar guild, Knights of Columbus, and Sokol. Mary truly enjoyed spending time with friends and family by whom she will be deeply missed.

She is survived by daughter Karen Roznovsky; granddaughters Laura Phelps, Melissa Herren (Henry), and Jamie Fisher, great-grandchildren Summer Lawlis, Danielle Lawlis, Brianna Lawlis, Aubin Herren, Emerie Phelps, Jately Fisher, Mitchell Herren, and Damon Herren; sister Hattie; brother Henry; and a host of relatives and friends.

Visitation for Mary was Sunday, June 4 from 5 to 8 p.m. with a rosary service starting at 7 p.m. at Pat H. Foley and Company in Houston. Funeral mass was on Monday, June 5 at 11 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Houston.

Burial took place at 2 p.m. at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery.

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, Texas, and on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed member, NORMAN FAY EAST, 86, of Houston, Texas, who passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 27, 2017.

Visitation was Thursday, June 1 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Forest Park-Westheimer in Houston.

Mass of Christian burial was at 10 a.m. Friday, June 2 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Norman East Houston.

Norman was born on a farm in Jewett, Missouri, on March 28, 1931, to Phannon and Maude Sample East. He graduated from Fredericktown High School in 1950 and moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where he met the love of his life, Rosemary. They married in 1955 and settled in Cahokia, Illinois. Norman served in the National Guard and began his career as an electrician with Missouri Pacific Railroad.

He was promoted to foreman and transferred to Fort Worth in 1969 then to Houston in 1971.

He retired as a general foreman from Union Pacific Railroad in 1987. Norman had a quick wit and loved to have fun.

He liked cooking, gardening, fishing, hunting, and woodworking.

Norman was a member of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, where he enjoyed dancing, bingo, and playing poker. He also belonged to St. Ambrose Catholic Church.

He was predeceased by his loving wife of 43 years, Rosemary; daughter Patricia McCann; parents; and siblings Hartford East, George L. East, and Ina Butcher.

He is survived by children Priscilla Tilton (husband Jeffery), John East (wife Janet), Elizabeth McCann (husband Thomas), and son-in-law Carl S. McCann; grandchildren William Harbison, Sarah Harvey (husband Ryan), Justin Havemann (wife Jodi), Jeffery Tilton, Jr. (wife Mary), Brian Tilton, Catherine Marsolan (husband DJ), John Michael East, Robert East, Micheal McCann (wife Ottilie), and Jenny Russell (husband John); great-grandchildren Kamden, Conner, Megan, Maddie, Blake, Tristan H., and Tristan T. Norman will be greatly missed by all

including the many friends he held so dear.

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 17, Novy Tabor, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother, FRANK ARNOLD HEJL. Brother Hejl was born September 29, 1926, to Henry and Rose Hejl in Caldwell, Texas.

Mr. Hejl passed away at his home on Monday, April 24, 2017.

He married Roberta Jackson Hejl on October 10, 1958, in Mexico.

He was very outdoorsy and enjoyed fishing, garFrank Hejl dening, and spending time with his kids playing all sorts of games with them. He was very easy going and loved frog “gigging” and dancing to Kitty Wells’ music.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor.

He is survived by wife Roberta; daughter and son-in-law Tira and Charles Regmund; grandchildren Terry Hebb, Tiffany Regmund, and Colton Regmund; and great-grandchildren Nyomi Rios and Lila Perski.

Graveside service was held on Thursday, April 27 at the New Tabor Cemetery.

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 23, Moravia, Texas, and on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed member, MARVIN CERNIK, of Moulton, Texas, who passed away at the age of 90 years, eight months, and 18 days.

The funeral was held on Saturday, May 27, 2017, at 10 a.m. at Schwenke-Baumgarten Funeral Home. Interment took place in Schulenburg City Cemetery with full Marvin Cernik military honors conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. Pallbearers were grandsons Cory Witt and Aaron Witt.

On Friday, May 26, the VFW conducted services at 6:30 p.m. at Schwenke-Baumgarten Funeral Home.

Born on August 9, 1926, on the family farm near Moulton, Marvin was the son of August and Pauline (Jurica) Cernik. He attended Komensky School through 11th grade, Schulenburg High School in the 12th grade, Texas A&M University receiving a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in agriculture education, and University of Michigan for a Master of Science in family planning and nutrition.

On August 5, 1950, he married Georgie Mae Gilmore at Little Flower Catholic Church in San Antonio. During World War II, he was a sergeant in the United States Army in the Pacific and Korea. He also served in the United States Air Force Reserves and retired as a colonel after 28 years.

He lived in Lavaca County for 52 years; 29 years overseas; and in Washington, D.C.; East Bernard, 1957 to 1959; Tehran, Iran, 1959 to 1966; Ankara, Turkey, 1966 to 1969; Ann Arbor, Michigan, 1968 to 1969; Kabul, Afghanistan, 1969 to 1974; Washington, D.C., 1980 to 1983; Bogota, Colombia, 1975 to 1980; and Panama City, Panama, 1983 to 1987.

He was a vocational-agriculture teacher, diplomat for the United States Agency of International Development, colonel in the United States Air Force Reserves, and rancher on the family farm.

23, Moravia. He was also a member of the American Legion, VFW, Military Officers Association, and Former Students of Texas A&M. Marvin was fluent in Czech, Spanish, Farsi, Turkish, and German. He loved to travel and go on cruises to Alaska, Hawaii, and Russia. He was active in several dance and dinner clubs. An avid Aggie, he had season tickets to the football games through 2015, when he marched in the front line into Kyle Field with other Aggie World War II veterans to honor the military graduates.

After retirement from the State Department, he returned to his roots as a rancher on the family farm. He enjoyed dancing and socializing at parties, dinners, and feasts. He loved to practice his language skills with friends and family.

Survivors include daughter Bonnie Kay Witt and husband Gary A. Witt of Houston; sons Glen Ray Cernik and wife Sophie Mae (Clausen) Cernik of Moravia and Clinton Lee Cernik of Taylor; grandchildren Keith Cernik, Jason Cernik, Cory Witt, and Aaron Witt; and great-grandson Daniel Cernik.

Preceding him in death were his parents; wife; and brother Harry Cernik.

Schwenke-Baumgarten Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Raymond was raised in Wharton County, attending Wharton schools until the family moved to Glen Flora, where he graduated from

Crescent High School. After serving the United States honorably in the US Army, he married Patricia Schlegel on February 11, 1956, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Raymond worked as a pipeline supervisor in the gas industry before retirement in 1989. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, card games, traveling to Las Vegas, gardening, and playing golf.

Many afternoons he could be found playing taroks. In addition to his parents, Raymond was preceded in death by his sister, Gladys Treybig.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton.

Raymond is survived by his wife of 61 years, Patricia Kallas of Wharton; children Julie Hart and husband Hale of Cameron Park, California, Raymond Kallas, Jr. and wife Felicia of Allen, and Brenda Jetelina and husband Randall of Wharton; brother Robert Kallas and wife Sandra of Wharton; and grandchildren Katie Kallas, Matthew Kallas, Haley Jetelina, and Taylor Jetelina.

Visitation was Saturday, June 3 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Wharton Funeral Home.

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 17, Novy Tabor, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother, DANIEL HENRY GINZEL. Brother Ginzel was born April 29, 1942, and was gathered into his Saviour’s arms on February 3, 2017, after a long battle with cancer and West Nile virus.

He was a Captain in the United States Air Force Daniel Ginzel serving from 1966 and honorably discharged in 1973. From there, he worked for Gulf Oil in Houston before returning to College Station. He worked as a comptroller and office manager. His last place of employment was Brazos Valley

Communications. His experience also included software development, electronics, telecommunications, and finance.

As a young man he raced go-carts and later followed NASCAR. Over the past 20 years, he developed an extensive genealogical database and recently discovered wild animal live video streams.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor.

He was preceded in death by his father Alvin Ginzel; and mother Martha Haisler Ginzel.

He is survived by wife of 51 years, Sherry Smith Ginzel of College Station; son Daniel Ginzel of Auburn, Alabama; daughter Sarah Coward of Marquez; aunt Lillie Haisler of Caldwell; uncle LeRoy Ginzel of Baytown; and brother Alwilliam Ginzel and family of Frisco.

There was no memorial service; but when you hear Tim McGraw sing “Please Remember Me” remember Norman in your own way with your favorite Blue Bell ice cream.

Anthony was born March 25, 1994, in Galveston to Abel and Aurelia Cruz.

Anthony loved fishing, especially for speckled trout. He loved fishing at Matagorda and Palacios and was always ready to go. He had wonderful friends and made many memories with them.

He also loved to hunt and cook. He was always ready for an adventure.

Anthony was a member of SPJST Lodge 30, Taiton.

He is survived by his parents; brothers Richard Cruz and wife Virginia, Abel J. Cruz, Arthur Escamilla, Jr., Eric Escamilla, Daniel Escamilla, and Adam Abelar III; and sisters Rebecca L. Lima and husband Manuel, Aries Escamilla, Tiffany Escamilla, Stephanie Escamilla,

and Agatha and Azalea Abelar.

Visitation was Monday, April 10 at St. Robert’s Catholic Church with a rosary at 6 p.m.

Funeral service was Tuesday, April 11 at St. Robert’s Catholic Church at 2 p.m. and officiated by Reverend Phillip Brune. Burial followed at Holy Cross Memorial Park.

Brother Schumacher was born October 19, 1931, to Gus and Sophia (Krueger) Schumacher in Burleson County. He entered into eternal rest on February 26, 2017.

Graveside service was held Wednesday, March 1 at Elizabeth Lutheran Cemetery with Pastor Richard Brunk, Jr. officiating.

He was raised around the Big Creek and Frenstat communities. He attended Lyons and Big Creek schools in his youth. He was baptized and confirmed in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lyons. He changed his membership to Elizabeth Lutheran Church when he moved to Caldwell.

When he was in the sixth grade, he left school to help his parents on the farm. In his early 20s, his parents retired from farming, so he went out into the working world. He became a carpenter and worked at Invader Boat in Deanville before it moved to Giddings. Edwin was a very skilled carpenter and was selfemployed for many years. He was a very helpful person, always showing and teaching how to do projects for friends and neighbors. He was an avid fisherman and loved to take his wife Irene out dancing. He also liked to do puzzles in his free time.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor.

Those of you coming from the Taylor direction, take Highway 95 toward Temple, exit Highway 53/Adams Avenue, west to downtown Temple. Take a right on North Third/TX 290 (at Jack in the Box). Go about two to three miles.

YAD Cards Due All YAD cards are due on this evening. Cards must be completed with typed recipes, hobby kit instructions, talent CDs with lyrics, and royalty speeches and autobiographies. Having it all together will save a lot of time in our preparation for YAD, which is on Saturday, July 8 at Lodge 47, Seaton. Thank you for all the time and hard work you put into your projects.

Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club Participates in National Polka Festival

Another successful National Polka Festival in Ennis behind us. The festivities kicked off with the annual King and Queen dance contest that was held at the KC Hall on Friday night, May 26, 2017.

Ten couples competed, but there can only be one winner! The winning couple is Tyler and Kaylee Prasifka. Their parents are Annette (Slovak) and Phillip Prasifka. We are so proud of them! We

had a beautiful parade Saturday morning, May 27 then enjoyed the new downtown Pivo Pavillion that afternoon.

Sunday morning, we all attended the KBEC Polka Party held at Sokol and

had a great time the rest of the day making memories with family and friends.

elcome to Radio Prague’s Czech language series Czech by Numbers, which explores numbers and their usage in everyday Czech speech. This is lesson number five lekce číslo pět. The word for the number pět is very similar in all Slavonic languages.

In certain situations the number five becomes pětka - the worst mark in school, a number five tram or a colloquial expression for a ten-crown coin.

It sounds strange that a ten-crown coin is called a “fiver” but that’s because the origin of the name dates back to the times of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Before currency reform at the turn of the 19th century, pětka was a name for a five-florin note which was the equivalent of a later ten-crown note.

Staying on a historical note, an interesting use of five before 1989 was the notorious pětiletka or Five Year Plan used by Communist central planners to set wildly unrealistic production targets.

Five is also the number of fingers on a hand, and if you say that somebody has bought something for five fingers -

To say that somebody is bright, Czechs sometimes use the idiom má všech pět pohromad - he or she has “all five together” - meaning all five senses.

The ordinal number fifth is pátý, that is for the masculine gender. Pátá in the feminine, standing on its own, can mean “five o’clock in the afternoon.” So, fiveo’clock tea is čaj o páté (note the change of the grammatical case).

In the neuter gender, the fifth is páté, as in a fifth child, páté dítě. The word is used in the idiom páté kolo u vozu which literally means - the fifth wheel on a cart. The figurative meaning is somebody who is not needed, left out, who is useless, superfluous.

And closely related is the word pátek - Friday, the fifth day of the week.

The Brazos Valley Czech Heritage Society was honored to award Emily Hubacek the 2017 Novak-Zaeske Scholarship at their 20th anniversary dinner celebration in May. Emily is the daughter of Richard and Lisa Hubacek and granddaughter of Margaret Hubacek. Emily is a graduate of Bryan High School and is

ranked 13th in her class with an overall GPA of 4.739. Emily will attend Texas A&M Corpus Christi starting this fall and plans to study early childhood development in hopes of becoming an elementary school teacher.

Tajemnice Janice Kaluža přečetla zápis z minulé schůze a byl schválen tak, jak byl čten. Linda Kaluža jako koordinátotka bratrských akcí poukázala na větší počet zábav a akci naší jednoty a možnosti členů a členek se pobavit, odpočinout si v letních táborech a dovolených, protože stát Texas je překrásný stát svou přírodou a možnost příjemného pobytu se naskytne na každém kroku. Náš tiskový orgán Věstník tiskne značný počet všech možných akcí v každém čísle a členstvo má možnost si vybrat místo, kde stráví příjemnou chvíli. Bylo by na škodu, aby člověk nevyužil tako vou příležitost.

President 3. okrsku John Engelke jako host připomenul členstvu, že nyní probíhá akce, která je důležitá pro získání přesného počtu odběratelů Věstníku. Je známo, že tiskárna a pošta si účtují stále vyšší částky a proto je nutno čas od času spočítat pravdivé odběratele tiskového orgánu Věstníku. Je potřeba si všimnout poslední strany Věstníku a zaslat adresu a jméno na patřičnou adresu, aby účetní v Hlavní úřadovně věděla, kdo je pravý odběratel. V tomto přípě je

nutno podotknout, že se stane, že někteří členové nebo členky si nepřejí odebírat Věstník a jejich přání je možno vyhovět, ale v opačném případě, kdy člen nebo členka chce odebírat Věstník a z různých důvodů nemůže odeslat svoje jméno a adresu na odběr Věstníku, pak je povinností někoho, kdo takovou osobu zná, aby potvrzení poslal za potřebou osobu.

Dnes lidé žijí v rozmanitých podmínkách a mnozí si neví rady, jak zařizovat odběr Věstníku. V každém čísle Věstníku najdeme různá upozornění a nabídky a proto je nutno zajistit, aby opravdoví zájemci mohli Věstník odebírat. Na druhé straně lidé, kteří nemají zájem o Věstník, mají možnost svoji vůli projevit patřičným způsobem. V každém případě Hlavní úřadovna očekává, že naši členové a členky oznámí svoje přání písemně dopisem nebo elektronicky, jak je možno udělat podle předlohy ve Věstníku.

V našem městečku jsme obnovili městský park, památník zemřelých hasičů při výbuchu skladu hnojiva a nyní je na pořadu pomátník pro samostatné hrdiny, kteří položili život při výbuchu. Památník je patřičný pro oběti neštěstí a občané města tak projevují patřičnou úctu vůči hasičům, kteří položili svoje životy při požáru a následném výbuchu hnojiva. World observes 75th anniversary of the destruction, rebirth of Lidice

The destruction of the village of Lidice in Central Bohemia was carried out on June 10, 1942, on orders from Adolph Hitler and Heinrich Himmler in reprisal for the assassination of Reich Protector Reinhard Heydrich in late spring of 1942. All 173 men over 15 years old were killed; 184 women and 88 of the children were transported to concentration camps. Some of the children were handed over to SS families while 82 were sent to the Chelmno extermination camp where they were gassed to death.

The intention of the Nazis — to erase the village from the map of the world — did not succeed. Lidice was restored and many communities around the globe adopted the name “Lidice.” In 1947, the cornerstone of a new Lidice was laid 300 meters away from the original site and in May 1948, the first new houses were constructed. A modern village of 150 houses gradually arose with the help of volunteers from throughout the Czech lands and from abroad.

In June 1955, the Rose Garden of Peace and Friendship was opened with the donation of 29 thousand rose bushes from 32 countries around the world. The fate of a small Czech village inspired numerous artists as well. The haunting emotive art piece by sculptor Marie Uchytilova, pictured above, pays tribute to the children who died in Chelmno.

The modern era of the Lidice Memorial began in 2001 when the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic estab-

lished the Lidice Memorial group dedicated to maintaining the Lidice site which had been neglected in the postcommunist era. For more information on Lidice, please visit the Lidice Memorial website at lidice-memorial.cz.
