On February 18, 2017, the Red Ravens polka band played a dance at SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone. The Red Ravens were formed in 1969 by former band leader Jodie Hermis. Since then, the band has gained much popularity among polka music fans and has enjoyed many accomplishments such as headlining on cruise ships and fred, left, and Anton Vrazel, both of appearing on the television Lodge 15, Buckholts join the Red Ravens on stage.

he Publication Committee met Saturday, January 14 at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. I always look forward to meeting with the committee because they bring different views, perspectives, and ideas to the table. One of the challenges that we talked about was the budget and how we can make the dollars that SPJST spends go farther in the Vestnik/Communication Department.

The Publication Committee recommended five items to the Supreme Lodge. The following were approved:

1. We recommend including a coupon in the Vestnik at least eight times to ask members if they wish to continue receiving the Vestnik and the annual calendar. The member will be asked to respond by mail, email, fax, etc. If the member does not respond, he/she will be removed from the Vestnik list and calendar list.

2. We recommend that the Vestnik be printed on newsprint rather than the current 35-lb. select 75-groundwood paper.

3. We recommend accepting the bid that was presented from the Temple Daily Telegram.

4. We recommend combining two issues of the Vestnik into one issue five times to mail 45 issues instead of 50 issues during the year.

The fifth recommendation was “In light of these cost effective measures, we recommend that the annual SPJST Calendar continue to be published as it has been published since

1971. We further recommend that a postcard be sent to the members who do not receive the Vestnik but are on the calendar mailing list asking them to respond if they wish to continue receiving the calendar.” The Supreme Lodge tabled this item and will continue the discussion on it.

March Vestnik Schedule Please note that we will be combining the March 8 and 15 Vestnik issues. This will be the annual Life Insurance and Annuity Extra along with a regular Vestnik. We send good thoughts to Accounting Assistant Dorothy Stuchly of Lodge 47, Seaton. Sister Dorothy was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and is currently undergoing treatments. Winston Churchill once said, “Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.” Dorothy’s attitude is to be admired. She continues to work at the Home Office each day—and with a big smile and positive energy. We don’t know how strong we are until being strong is the only choice that we have. Best wishes, Dorothy, for continued strength, courage, energy, and healing.

Fraternalists of the Year

The Fraternalist of the Year program recognizes members who have, through example and accomplishment, provided outstanding volunteer service to their lodge, society, and community during the past year.

Local Lodge Incentive Awards

Enhanced Premium Refund The formula for calculating the Enhanced Premium Refund is:

1. $1.00 for each paid-up certificate; and 2. 2.80 percent of the lodge’s annual earned premium.

To receive the Enhanced Premium Refund, lodges must meet the following three-point criteria:

1. Hold regular lodge meetings in accordance with Article 50 of the (2012) SPJST By-Laws and offer a well-rounded fraternal program.

Every lodge is required to hold regular meetings to discuss lodge business with their members. Service to each other — as fellow SPJST members — and service to the community that we serve is an important part of the SPJST mission. Rather than mandating a specific number of fraternal activities that your lodge must

2016 SPJST Awards accomplish in a given year in order to remain in good standing and qualify for incentives, the greater focus is on lodges working to host a healthy mix of “quality” events that bring value to SPJST’s community presence.

2. Return all requested paperwork on time by the due date.

Every lodge is required to send in all requested paperwork that is needed from the lodge. This includes 990; 990-Ts; and fraternal activity summaries.

3. Submit regular letters/photos to the Vestnik.

Every lodge is required to routinely submit news of upcoming events, lodge meetings, and/or meeting/event summaries and/or photographs to the Vestnik. Of course, the lodge may contribute to the Vestnik more frequently than once a month.

Enhanced Premium Refund will be distributed to a lodge deemed to be “non-compliant” provided that requested paperwork attesting to the lodge’s active status is received by the Home Office before May 1, 2017.

Gold Star Lodge In addition to receiving an Enhanced Premium Refund, qualifying lodges that generate at least $10,000 in earned premium — excluding dump-ins and 1035 exchanges — on new business issued in 2016 will receive designation as an SPJST Gold Star Lodge.

Member Referral Incentive Awards

Annual Prize Drawing All referral cards received during the year will go into a drawing for five $100 Wal-Mart gift cards.

Youth Awards

District Youth Club Award Requirements—Host district youth membership rally and meet requirements needed to qualify for Youth Program Incentives.

Award—$100 for each youth club in respective district that achieves its youth club goal. Funds must be used for the benefit of the youth.

Top Youth Club in District Award Requirements—Top active youth club in each district with most certificates issued in 2016 that remain in force. Must have a minimum of five certificates issued in 2016 and meet requirements to qualify for Youth Program Incentives. Award—Party for youth club members, families, and friends. Cost not to exceed $200.

Youth Club Incentive Requirements—Meet requirements needed to qualify for Youth Program Incentives.

Award: $10 for each certificate issued, ages 0 to 17, in the respective lodge. Additional $10 for each certificate issued that joins the youth club. ($20 total)

Youth Leader Incentive Requirements—Meet requirements needed to qualify for Youth Program Incentives.

Sales Agent Awards

Royal Caribbean Cruise Award Royal Caribbean Cruise Award is a sevennight Western Caribbean Cruise for two departing from the port of Galveston aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship in Spring 2017. To qualify, the agent must have at least 18 certificates issued along with persistency and annualized premium production rates. Annuities, dump-ins, and 1035 exchanges are excluded. Any lapses or terminations from January 1, 2016, through December 31, 2016, will be deducted from the qualifying totals. Agents who have at least 24 certificates issued with have their mileage to and from Galveston reimbursed.

Annualized Premium Drawing Agents who do not achieve an annual award will be entered into a drawing for one Royal Caribbean Cruise trip. Agents will receive one chance for every $1,000 in annualized premium throughout the year.

Million Dollar Producer Drawing Agents who achieve $1 million of life insurance in the year 2016 and who maintain at least 85 percent persistency over the preceding 13 months will receive an entry into the drawing for one Royal Caribbean Cruise trip. Agents receive one change for every $1 million of life insurance issued throughout the year.

FAC Reporting Requirements for 2017 First and foremost, thank you again, SPJST Lodge Fraternal Activities Coordinators, for your time and commitment in completing the fraternal hours for 2016. You have a very important job in your lodge by recording these hours.

Please know that I am only a phone call away if you ever need help with user IDs, password, or walking you through the process of entering your fraternal hours.

Once again under the reporting method for 2017, the FAC will complete a simple one-page fill-in-the-blank/ check-off form for each lodge meeting, fraternal activity, and/or community service project on the www.fraternalsgive.org website. The process eliminates the necessity of filing both the FAC Mid-Year Report and FAC Annual Report. Instead, the new form may be completed online following the lodge meeting or event.

Watch your mail as I will be including the Fraternal Activities Coordinator position description and 2017 Reference Guide and paper reporting forms. This guide will have important information such as FAC Reporting Requirements Streamlined for 2017, Premium Refund Program Expanded to Include Incentives, and Lodge Activity Guide.

Save the Date: Saturday May 6 — SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration Make plans to join in the fun and festivities of the 2017 SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration to be held Saturday, May 6 at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall. Seaton Star Hall is located approximately seven miles east of Temple, just off Highway 53.

There will be cars! And more cars!

There will be Czech heritage displays, music, entertainment, and silent and live auctions.

Consistently, the SPJST Car Show has been one of the premier car show events in the Greater Central Texas area.

Lodges Invited to Apply For Join Hands Day Incentives May 6 also marks the date for this year’s Join Hands Day. We hope your lodge has discussed plans for a project to involve youth, adults, and/or other organizations to make improvements in your community. This year, SPJST wants the lodges to invite other community organizations such as Lions Club, Volunteer Fire Departments, Kiwanis, Boy/Girl Scouts . . .

The Supreme Lodge again will offer the $100 incentive to all lodges that register their projects with the Home Office. You can do this by completing the Join Hands Day flyer and returning it to the SPJST Home Office. This year, we ask you to share your photos and projects with the Vestnik. 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive October 1 started the SPJST 100 Pen-

nies Drive to benefit the scholarship fund. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Donations of any amount will be accepted and added to the general scholarship fund that is maintained by the Home Office. No amount is too small or too large. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive will run through March 31. So keep sending in your pennies!

State 42 Domino Tournament The SPJST State 42 Domino Tournament will be held Saturday, April 1. This will be the Progressive 42 Domino Tournament to be held at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. If you love Progressive 42 and enjoy fellowship, come and play with your fellow SPJST brothers and sisters in a friendly game of dominoes. We would love to have you there!

District Two Spring Meeting Sunday, March 19 at Lodge 177, Academy

To All Lodge Officers, Sales Agents and Members, The District Two Spring Meeting will be held on March 19, 2017, and hosted

by Lodges 87, Temple; 200, BrucevilleEddy; and 246, Morgan’s Point. I want to thank these lodges for joining together to be our hosts. I also want to thank Lodge 177, Academy members for stepping up to let us use their lodge hall as the spring meeting location. Registration will begin at 1 p.m., and the meeting will start at 2 p.m.

We are planning a very informative meeting.

Desserts Needed for Meal Our host lodges will serve a meal catered by Edwin Pechal of Lodge 47, Seaton. The meal will consist of pork loin, loaded potatoes, green beans, bread, and tea.

Thanks, Edwin. This will be a very good meal for only $3 per plate. We are asking members to please bring a sweet dish to go along with the meal.

Decorated Egg Contest We plan to have guessing games, door prizes, and also the egg contest so start decorating your egg now and bring it to the meeting. Who knows - you may win first place!

Lodge, Sales Awards As you all know, we will be honoring our top lodges in the district and top sales agents so please come help support these fine people.

Cash Door Prize Drawings Additionally, there will be three cash door prize drawings. All adults in attendance – age 16 and above – will be able to enter their names in a drawing for a $100 cash prize. Sales agents in attendance will also be entered in a separate drawing for $100. Youth in attendance – all under the age of 16 – will be able to enter their names in a drawing for $25.

Youth Activities Silent Auction, Rock Contest, Cereal Food Drive District Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky will be holding a decorated rock contest for the youth. She is also having a silent auction so bring something to help raise money for the youth.

The youth are having an “SPJST Super Cereal” food drive to fight hunger. We are asking if you will please bring a box of cereal with you to the spring meeting; let’s help these great kids make a difference in some child’s hunger.

Remember, this is the time for elections of officers. If you or anyone you know would like to run for any office, please let us know.

Dear District Four Members, The time is coming for the District Four Spring Meeting.

Lodge 49, Rowena will be hosting the meeting on Saturday, April 1, 2017, at the SPJST Hall in Rowena. SPJST District Seven Spring Meeting, hosted by Lodge 79, Corpus Christi will be Sunday, March 19, 2017, at the lodge hall, located at 5502 Kostoryz Road in Corpus Christi.

Registration begins at 10 a.m. Refreshments will be furnished by Lodge 79. The lunch served at 12:15 p.m. will consist of barbecue brisket and sausage with all the trimmings for $3. Members are asked to report the number of plates needed to your lodge secretary by Friday, March 10.

The meeting convenes at 10:30 a.m.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood sets March 12 appreciation dinner

SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood will have an appreciation dinner on Sunday, March 12, 2017, at 12:30 p.m. All who helped prepare food and in any other way for the annual picnic and those who helped with preparing food and working at Westfest are invited to this appreciation dinner.

Lodge 17, New Tabor distribute goodies to nursing facilities residents

The February meeting of Lodge 17, New Tabor was held on Sunday, February 5, 2017, at 2 p.m. The meeting was called to order by President Randy Gaas. Betty Suehs led the Pledge of Allegiance. Secretary Ben Trcalek read the minutes of the January meeting, and they were approved as read. FAC Holly Narro informed everyone about all the upcoming events and also that she had turned in all of her fraternal reports.

Youth Leader Holly Narro informed everyone on everything that the youth club members are doing such as making valentine cards for the nursing home.

Under old business, the water well was discussed, and we are getting a new well as soon as the weather permits.

Under new business, we discussed the charity to Burleson County Manor and Copperas Hollow nursing facilities.

Lodge 18, Elgin: a great venue and community benefit

What a great Valentine dance we had at SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin hall! We had people from near and far including a couple with their four grandchildren from New Mexico. Let me tell you those children were no strangers to the dance floor. They could out-dance many. It was fun just to watch. I didn’t get the

names, but I did hear that the little 10year-old had a birthday.

President David Meyer did a great job decorating the hall. He had hearts and cupids all over. The Dujka Brothers played some great music. If you missed the dance, you missed a great time.

We didn’t have a January meeting.

We didn’t have enough people in attendance to have a meeting. Due to rain and illness, we had the officers and two members.

Elgin Hall - Great for the Community Elgin needs this hall. Look at the benefits and fundraisers we donate the use of the hall for only a clean-up fee.

Where will you go? I don’t think you will find a better, larger hall for the price. Consider coming to the meeting to see what is going on.

Lodge 24, Cyclone hosts Red Ravens

Lodge 24, Cyclone hosted the Red Ravens on Saturday, February 20, 2017, for a dance. The music was smooth as silk and was played with passion. A good crowd greeted the band with people from Dallas, West, Caldwell, and Lake LBJ. The band had a good time, and President Daniel Wilde’s hamburgers were a hit. Lodge 47, Seaton hosts Texas Polka Music Museum festival this Sunday

Dear Readers, SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall is the site of Texas Polka Music Museum’s Third Annual Texas Music Festival on Sunday, March 5, 2017, from 1 to 6 p.m.

Seaton Star Hall is located east of Temple at 10842 Texas Highway 53. Music will be provided by All Around Czechs and Czech Melody Masters. All-day admission is $10 per person.

The afternoon will include hourly door prizes; limited live auction; and silent auction (items accepted on the day of the event). Hamburger baskets will be available throughout the day. The hall opens at 12 noon.

Lodge 48 Beyersville plans April 9 Easter egg hunt

The Lodge 48, Beyersville meeting came to order at 6 p.m. All officers were present except Vice President Brett.

Minutes were read by Alice Bracewell, and they were accepted.

The treasurer’s report was read by Bonnie Urbanek and accepted.

Youth Leader Michelle gave a report and advised of upcoming projects of the youth. They worked at Shepherd’s Heart Food Pantry on February 11. Youth made valentine cards for the residents at the Taylor S.P.J.S.T. nursing home.

Cheryl gave her report on the hall.

Bobby gave the property report.

Robert advised of some upgrades being done to the facilities and PA system.

An Easter egg hunt is being planned for Sunday, April 9 with a recognition for our 50- and 75 year members.

The domino tournament is being scheduled for July 15 or October 28.

There were no birthdays or anniversaries for the month.

The meeting adjourned at 7:25 p.m.

Lodge 81, Needville welcomes new hall manager

The February 2017 meeting of SPJST Lodge 81, Needville was held on Sunday, the 19th. At 12 noon, a prayer of thanks was given by Vincent Newman, and everyone enjoyed a meal of sandwiches. A variety of side dishes and desserts were provided by members. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Darlene Blinka and her kitchen committee for getting everything ready for us.

President Vincent Newman called the business meeting to order at 1 p.m.

Jeanette Newman led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We had a moment of silence for departed members Edward Kuban and Benita Walzel. We extend our sympathy to their families and friends. All officers answered roll call except Treasurer Bradley Stavinoha.

Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall read her report, and it was approved as read. Special Funds Chairman Seth Sacra read his report, and it was approved as read.

Under new business, we voted to buy

some tables from Lodge 172, Pasadena and sell our old tables. It was decided to let the Home Office send the 50-year and 75-year pins to our members. It was announced that the S.P.J.S.T. Nursing Home in Needville will have a Valentine’s Day party. Seth Sacra introduced everyone to Dan Natho, who is interested in taking over the hall manager’s position. It was made into a motion and passed to allow him to assume the position.

Door prize winners were Frances Pollock, Abi Parmer, Calvin Lamensky, and Joyce Lamensky. Congratulations to our winners!

Next Meeting—March 19 For our next meeting on March 19, it was decided to buy plates from the American Legion fundraiser. Members, please bring a dessert. See you at the next meeting!

Lodge 13, Dime Box member Emily (Jatzlau) Ordogne and husband Christopher visited the SPJST Home Office with their sons Travis, age 5, and Andrew, age 1. The family resides in Temple. Emily is a past SPJST Lodge 13 Youth Club member, and Travis is excited about participating in the Youth Program.

Lodge 84, Dallas reports on February meeting

Dear Readers, Lodge 84, Dallas held its monthly meeting on Sunday, February 19, 2017.

The meeting was brought to order by President Justine Yeager at 2 p.m. Flag Bearer Lynda Novak led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a moment of silence for departed members Pauline Jones and Robert Urban and for our troops serving overseas.

Secretary Cherri Petr read minutes from the January meeting and correspondence received. In the absence of Sunshine Lady JoAnn Manak, it was reported that a sympathy card was sent to the Don Jarma family on the loss of Debbie Jarma’s father, Robert Folsom.

May he rest in peace.

FAC Vicki Sims reported that the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive continues. There is a statewide “Super Cereal” food drive going on, and she encouraged all present to donate boxes of cereal at our next meeting. FAC Sims also reminded everyone that Join Hands Day is Saturday, May 6.

Youth Leader Lynda Novak reported that the youth met on Saturday, February

11 at St. Joseph’s Nursing Home for their annual Valentine’s Day visit. As part of this month’s “Act of Kindness” theme, the youth recited poetry and Valentine stories and shook each of the resident’s hands before departing. The youth then met at a local Wendy’s to conduct their monthly meeting and social. Youth Leader Novak said that the Youth Development Workshop will be held on Saturday, April 22 followed by a district overnight before the spring meeting on Sunday, April 23.

House committee reported on the first gathering of the packing event held on February 8 and shared a reminder that next time we meet is Wednesday, February 22.

Next Meeting—March 19 President Yeager then reminded everyone that the next meeting will be held Sunday, March 19 at 2 p.m. before adjournment.

The regular meeting of SPJST Lodge 177, Academy was called to order at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 8, 2017, by President Otis Beck. All officers were present.

Cernan — “last man on the moon” — who passed away on January 16. Guest soloist will be Annamarie Zmolek. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with a reception, followed by the dinner at 7 p.m. There will also be a silent auction and music throughout the

evening. Tickets for the event are $75 each and includes complimentary valet parking and requires advance purchase.

Ennis Sewing Circle met Thursday, February 9, 2017, in the Sokol Club Room. Irene, Ann, Pat, and I met at 8 a.m. We stretched Pat’s quilt, which was a really pretty one with dark colors. We made coffee, and before you knew it, we had quilters all around - Dorothy Kudrna, Dorothy Booth, Dorothy Prachyl, Martha Ritchey, Ann Clagett, President Irene, Victoria Vlk, Ginny Svehlak, Dolores Vrana, Geraldine Kubin, Geraldine Volek, and Joann Brown. Thank you to those who came early to quilt.

By lunch time, we had 20 members.

President Irene led us in grace, and we all enjoyed a delicious lunch as always.

Thank you to the set-up and clean-up crew. I never get your names - sorry.

After lunch, President Irene called the meeting to order, the Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all, and a moment of silence was held for Mary Ann Kephart, Deloris Kapavik, and Vernon Wilson. “Our Father” was recited for the above, and all our sick members.

Secretary Ann read the minutes of our last meeting, and Treasurer Dolores Vrana gave the treasurer’s report. Both were approved as read.

Ginny Svehlak read several funny stories that we all enjoyed.

Sunshine Lady Dorothy announced the one and only birthday celebrant Anne Tupy, who was not present so we did not sing.

Delisle Doherty, left, of Lodge 196, Houston-West and Kerry Herrington of Lodge 142, Houston show off their bronze metals they won in a dodgeball competition with seven other teams on the SPJST Sales Agents’ Royal Caribbean cruise in February. Delisle’s plaid shorts were a photo attraction for many scavenger hunters aboard the cruise.

Plaid shorts were one of the items to be located for a scavenger hunt, and Delisle was one of the few wearing plaid shorts.

Quilt scheduler Pat announced we will quilt for Mary Nell Sladecek in March; Dorothy Prachyl in April; and Ann Clagett in May. Kay Lynn and some helpers worked on Kay Lynn’s tie quilt that she started some time back. She was happy they almost finished it.

Pat thanked all who worked on her quilt. Lil thanked the Circle for her get well card. The Circle thanked Ann Clagett for the pretty valentine decorations; she always does a great job.

We were happy to see Geraldine Kubin who has been under the weather.

We hope she stays well.

Libbie Vrla talked about lifelong Sokol member Libbie Pavelka who was turning 100 years on Thursday, February 9. Her family had a party planned, but I understand that Libbie is now in the hospital. We hope all goes well for her. Let’s keep Libbie in our prayers.

Let’s also keep David Trojacek and John (PapaJohn) Marek in our prayers; they are on our sick list.

President Irene’s tip of the day was an easy way to cut a baby tumbling block quilt pattern. That was great.

Fort Worth Friendship Club

Fort Worth Friendship Club met Wednesday, February 1, 2017, at the new St. Thomas Church at 5953 Bowman Roberts Road in Fort Worth. The meeting was called to order by President Barbara Becknell, and everyone was welcomed. The Pledge of Allegiance was said by all. It was nice to have Debbie Skrasek, Helen Skrasek, and Lorraine Cross back. Debbie had fallen before Christmas, broke her elbow, had surgery on her arm, and wasn’t able to drive.

Secretary Mary Ann Krivanek read the minutes from the last meeting, and Treasurer Margaret Sears presented the financial report. Both were accepted as presented. Those of us who are not St. Thomas members were given a tour by Mary Ann. The church is very pretty and large with a chapel on one side and a gathering room on the other side.

The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to our one February celebrants - Shirley Martin. May you have many more.

Since this is the valentine season, President Barbara told stories about St. Valentine which have been handed down through the years. A lot of our members were dressed in red in keeping with the season. Vice President Lola had a valentine on the tables for everyone, and President Barbara gave everyone a treat of a small M&Ms package of candy clipped with a painted clothes pen that made it look like a butterfly.

Decorations were all in red and white - thanks, Lola and Rose Ann! Since the first Wednesday in March is Ash Wednesday, it was voted in the last meeting to not meet on Ash Wednesday, but to meet on the second Wednesday which will be on March 8.

We had four door prizes and played the 50-50 dollar game. Of course, I didn’t get the names of any of the winners.

I am sure all were happy.

Sunshine person Darlene Thompkins reported sending get well cards to Debbie Skrasek when she fell and broke her elbow and also when she had the surgery. A sympathy card was sent to Margaret Hoenig on the death of her sister-in-law in Illinois. Our sympathy goes out to her family.

Treasurer Margaret distributed new membership booklets and asked for volunteers to sign up to serve as hostesses and to pick up the chicken for our luncheons. Thanks, Margaret! You did a great job. The kitchen at the new church is small, no stove, but it does have a mi-

Everyone was asked to bring utensils for their own dish then take home without washing any dishes.

I received a call the other day from Camille Bolcer who said she now lives at Sunrise Assisted Living Home at 6151 Bryant Irvin Road, No. 119, Fort Worth, Texas 76132. When she came to our Christmas luncheon, she talked about moving soon as it was beginning to be difficult in fixing her food. Remember she turned 100 years young on December 8. She asked me to come see her, but she said for me to call first as she plays bingo and participates in all their activities. I guess she is staying busy, as she never answers her phone when I call. Camille said that since she now lives on this side of town, she won’t be able to go to St Paul’s Church, but that her money would still go to St Paul’s. Her son lives in Benbrook and used to take her to St. Paul’s every Sunday, but guess she’ll now go to his church.

Then I had a call from Annie Whitsell, and she asked that I thank all the ladies who signed the Christmas card we sent her. She said she still looks at it often and reads all the names. She did notice that we have several new members. Annie still lives at home, will be 93 years young on April 18, said her back is giving her problems, but she is still able to fix her meals as she uses a walker. She said she eats lots of Lean Cuisines. Her daughter would like for Annie to go live with her, but Annie said

she is content staying home where she can watch television all night long if she desires. She said that she reads a lot with the aid of a magnifying glass, says her prayers each day, and still does communion ministry at St Paul’s Church. A neighbor takes her to church each Sunday then drives her around to give out communion. She said that Camille used to sit on one side, and she has her pew on the other side, and that no one ever took their spot. Annie did say she attended the lovely birthday party the church gave Camille on her 100th birthday.

I also had calls from Lydia Alholm and Frances Matthews saying to thank all who signed the Christmas cards they received from the Club. Both said they enjoyed reading all the names.

Rita Thomas and I attended the valentine luncheon for those over age 70 at our church of St. Andrews last Sunday. In visiting around, I asked if anyone knew where Sister Frances, the baseball Nun, is at as she used to attend the 10:30 mass and has been missed. I was pleased to learn that she is now living at Sunrise Assisted Living Home where Camille now lives, and I’ll be able to visit her, too!

Thanks to our telephone committee Elizabeth Creamer, Lorraine Cross, and Helen Skrasek. They called last month to let everyone know the meetings would now be held at the new church. I am sure they will again be calling that the meeting will not be on Ash Wednesday, but on March 8.

Following the meeting, grace was said and a great fried chicken lunch was enjoyed in our new surroundings.

Games were then played.

Hostesses for March will be Debbie Skrasek and Libbie Vrla. Carolyn Irby and Darlene Tompkins volunteered to pick up the chicken, and I don’t recall who volunteered to always call in the order. The theme will be Mardi Gras/St. Patrick’s Day with colors of purple, gold, and green.

The next meeting will be on the second Wednesday, March 8. Don’t forget to bring spoons for your dish.

Lodge 246 Morgan’s Point plans 2017 activities

Dear Readers, Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point met Wednesday, February 15, 2017, at Anaheim Tex-Mex Restaurant in downtown Temple. While awaiting lunch, we reviewed last month’s meeting minutes, correspondence, financial reports, and upcoming activities.

We discussed the District Two Spring Meeting that Lodge 246 is hosting at Lodge 177, Academy with Lodges 87, Temple and 200, Bruceville-Eddy. We look forward to working with these lodges to host the members of District Two. The meeting is Sunday, March 19, and registration is at 2 p.m. Please see letters in this week’s Vestnik from District Two FAC Ruth Hanusch and District Two Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky for all of the meeting details.

After lunch, we planned 2017 meetings, activities, and community service projects. Some of these include monthly meetings at Temple area restaurants, volunteering at Feed My Sheep, and recognizing first responders. We also talked about Thanksgiving and Christmas ideas.

Next Meeting—March 14 The next lunch meeting is Tuesday, March 14 at 11:30 a.m. at Jody’s Family Restaurant on First Street in Temple. We will review reports and plan for the upcoming SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration set for Saturday, May 6 at Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall.

State Youth Director shares March updates

On January 28, 2017, District Youth Counselors and assistants met for their spring meeting at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. I am happy to report that we confirmed all district camp dates and made changes to the SPJST Youth Handbook. We completed all new business on the agenda. The Fall DYC meeting is scheduled for September 22 and 23 and will be held at SPJST Camp in Ledbetter.

This year’s incentive checks will be presented on March 25 at the Youth Leaders’ Retreat awards banquet along with the youth allocation checks. This years Youth Leaders’ Retreat will be held at SPJST Camp in Ledbetter. I look forward to youth leaders accepting awards on behalf of their youth club as well as themselves.

Live the Adventure!

Now, let’s focus on SPJST’s Live the Adventure membership drive! Keep on encouraging your youth members to bring their friends to the meetings. Keep things fresh, and if you do not have a membership drive planned for 2017, please start thinking about what you can do to invite new members and existing non-active members into your youth group. SPJST has a wonderfully rewarding youth program, and it is up to us to share it with others!

Please remind your youth members to use the referral cards for new members.

All referral cards received by the SPJST Home Office during the month will go into a drawing for three $25 Walmart gift cards. The person making the referral also benefits by helping to build a

stronger and more active local lodge! All referral cards received during the year will go into a drawing for five $100 Walmart gift cards. Winners will be announced in the Vestnik. Please help us to ensure that the leads that your youth members pass on are quality leads. We would not want any sales agent to devote precious time calling on unqualified leads. A good referral is someone who an SPJST member has spoken with about joining. In visiting with your prospective lead, make sure that he/she knows that an SPJST Sales Agent will call them.

Youth Leaders Retreat Please mark your calenders, and save the date. Youth Leaders Retreat will start on Saturday, March 25 at 10 a.m. at SPJST Education and Nature Center. I would really like for all youth leaders to come and stay overnight with

us and head home on Sunday, March 26. All youth leaders and their assistants are encouraged to attend. A spouse/guest is welcome to accompany you; if you are planning to bring a spouse/guest, please let me know, and I will work with you on making arrangements. Youth leaders are also invited to come and make a weekend out of this event and stay over Friday, March 24.

Warrenton Trade Days will be going on, and you are welcome to come early to shop.

We’re going to cover a lot of ground on Saturday’s program, but I plan on doing my best to make it as educational, informative, and fun as I possibly can. Following the daytime agenda,

Job Position: Seasonal Summer Camp Staff - Program Assistant SPJST Education and Nature Center Where: Ledbetter, Texas • What: Seasonal

This is a full-time, seasonal position. Program Assistants will attend CPR instruction, open water lifeguarding, challenge course instruction, archery training, bb gun training, kitchen training, and all other areas of operation training during the first two weeks of employment.

• A Program Assistant’s primary responsibility is to assure safety of the campers.

• Program Assistants are to set a good example at all times, to show an enthusiastic attitude about learning and the outdoor environment. It will be your responsibility to ensure that campers have an enjoyable camp.

• Program Assistants will be in charge of all campers they are working with at the time, and Program Assistants will be under the direction of the Camp Director.

• Program Assistants will be responsible for running the programs they are

assigned to do and any other duties as needed.

• Program Assistants will be responsible for providing a safe, fun, and pleasant atmosphere for campers.

• Program Assistants will be at camp at all times, unless scheduled to be off, or with permission to leave by Camp Director.

Decorated Rock Contest Please encourage your youth to attend your district spring meeting and participate in the decorated rock contest. All members who attend their district spring meeting will receive five points in the Merit Point System. All contest participants will receive a participation award, and youth club members will receive another five merit points in the Merit Point System. The first place winning rocks from each district will be featured in a display case at the SPJST Home Office lobby through the end of the youth year.

The first place winning rocks from each district will also be judged on the state level.

Prizes at the state level are kindergarten to 8 years - $25 gift card; ages 9

to 11 years - $25 gift card; ages 12 to 14 years - $25 gift card; and ages 15 to high school senior - $25 gift card.

and help them be an important asset to their district camps. I won’t give anything away, but I’ll tell you some great activities are being planned. LITs must attend this event in order to be eligible to assist with their district’s summer camping season. LITs will also assist their youth leaders with their youth clubs throughout the year.

Who’s eligible to be a Leader-In-Training? LITs are active high school- aged youth who have been approved by their youth leader and District Youth Counselor as responsible and mature enough to be an LIT. The youth club member may attend the LIT Workshop after completing an Leader-In-Training Contract. Forms will be made available through the online camp application system.

SPJST Juniors and Seniors invited to apply for 2017 LEAD Team A new summer youth leadership program is set to get underway this year in SPJST. The LEAD program (Leaders in Education and Development) will offer high school juniors and seniors with the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills while they play a supporting role throughout the monthlong SPJST summer camp program at the SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC).

The LEAD program is being offered in addition to SPJST’s longstanding LIT (Leaders-in-Training) program. For 2017, all interested LEAD program candidates will be asked to complete an application. The application process will be followed by an online Skype interview.

A total of 10 youth will be accepted into the program for 2017. Those who are selected will begin their leadership regimen by attending and participating in a weeklong SPJST training session for SPJST summer camp personnel in June.

Participants will receive certifications in multiple areas including CPR, lifeguarding, and first aid. They will return to the SPJST ENC in July for three SPJST summer camp sessions during which time they will be assigned to groups and are relied upon for assistance with daily activities.

There is no cost for participating in the LEAD Program. Applications are available on the SPJST website, through SPJST youth leaders or from the SPJST Home Office. If you have any questions regarding any aspect of the LEAD program, please contact State Youth Director Lynette Talasek at 254-931-0639.

Statewide Food Drive Last year’s food drive was a huge success with youth clubs collecting 1,376 pounds of food and $250 cash that was donated to 14 food pantries across Texas.

Let’s make this year’s donation even bigger! We are calling this food drive “Super Cereal.” Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and cereal is the best. It’s also one of the most common items requested by food banks. In the spring, food banks need your help more than ever, so collect cereal boxes as part of this complete breakfast.

Ask your neighbors, friends, family, lodge, and even your local grocery store to help out with your efforts. Be sure and count the boxes of cereal you donate and take a picture of your super cereal pyramid to send to the Vestnik. You can then donate the cereal to the food pantry of your choosing. Be sure to document your efforts and send your photo and information to the Vestnik. This food drive will end on April 1.

April Vestnik Project April’s Vestnik project will give some information about Arbor Day. Please try and plan a fun activity or invite a speaker to talk about trees and the importance of having them around us.

Online Camp Applications Please know that applications for LIT Retreat, SPJST Summer Camp, and camp chaperones will be available on the spjst.org website beginning in March.

Each camper and camp chaperone needs to fill out a separate camp application.

Please be sure to fill in each blank, and if it does not apply to you or your child, fill in the space with “N/A.” All camp applications are due June 1.

100 Pennies Scholarship Drive There’s still time for youth club members to send in donations for this year’s

100 Pennies Scholarship Drive. Thanks to all of the youth and youth clubs who have contributed to this wonderful project. All youth who donate at least $2 will receive two merit points. All youth who donate at least $5 will also receive a certificate. May 31 is the deadline to receive credit.

Mark Your Calendar: May 6 is Join Hands Day Our goal for 2017 is to have 50 or more lodges participate. What can your youth club do? Some of the great projects from past years included baking for the needy, cemetery clean-ups, highway beautification, assisting veterans and senior citizens programs, conducting a variety of fix-up and refurbishing projects, and a fundraiser for your local volunteer fire department. Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club Visits St. Joseph Home

Dear Readers, The youth of Lodge 84, Dallas met Saturday, February 11, 2017, at St. Joseph’s Nursing Home for our annual community service project visiting the residents.

We each read a valentine poem, and Ryan read a valentine story. Afterwards, Youth Leader Lynda Novak presented Sister with a beautiful, crocheted scarf, flowers for the altar, and some lotion for the residents. We then shook hands with each of the residents before departing to Wendy’s for our meeting.

Our meeting was brought to order at 4 p.m. Josh Tucker led all in the Pledge of Allegiance, youth club motto, and a moment of silence.

Youth Leader Lynda then helped us with old business and new business in-

cluding discussing a boxed cereal food drive and the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive - encouraging everyone to bring a donation. She also announced that the Youth Development Workshop will be held on April 22 followed by a district overnight before the District Three Spring Meeting on Sunday, April 23. The decorated rock contest will be held at the spring meeting.

We then did our Vestnik project before the social.

2017. The main thing - at this point - is committing to doing something. When coming up with ideas for your project, try to do something that will be noticed by the public. If you have any questions on this, please contact me.

Again, this year, the Supreme Lodge will offer a $100 incentive to SPJST local lodges to be used in developing and/or promoting their project. This incentive will be for lodges who partner with youth in their community. To receive the $100 incentive, lodges must register the event with the Home Office prior to Join Hands Day. The Supreme Lodge will then forward a check to the lodges who have registered.

2017 SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration Make plans to join in the fun and festivities of the 2017 SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration to be held Saturday, May 6 at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall. Seaton Star Hall is located approximately seven miles east of Temple, just off Highway 53.

There will be cars! And more cars!

There will be Czech heritage displays, arts and crafts vendors, silent auction, arts and crafts vendors, music, and showcase entertainment. Admission is free.

It is no accident that the event coincides with Join Hands Day on May 6. If your lodge or youth club is still looking for a Join Hands Day event, the 2017 SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration could be the place for you!

If you would like to reserve a booth space and donate the profit to the event, your donation will be added to the amount that will be divided between the Czech Heritage Museum and SPJST Education and Nature Center at Cooper Farm. Consistently, the SPJST Car Show has been one of the premier car show events in the Greater Central Texas area. End-Of-Summer Getaway!

Good times await you at the Corpus Christi End-of-Summer Getaway. Start making plans now to join us on August 11 and 12 for a fun-filled weekend. We will be staying at Emerald Beach Hotel which is located right on the beach.

District Two Youth Spring Meeting Sunday, March 19 Lodge 177, Academy

Dear Members, The District Two Spring Meeting will be held Sunday, March 19, 2017, at SPJST Lodge 177, Academy. The meeting will be hosted by Lodges 87, Temple; 200, Bruceville-Eddy; and 246, Morgan’s Point. This is true fraternalism, seeing four lodges getting together to host this meeting!

Registration will be from 1 to 2 p.m. with the meeting beginning at 2 p.m.

This year’s project will be a “Decorated Rock Contest” for all youth members.

The criteria is that the rock must fit in the palm of your hand, and you can decorate it however you’d like. You can find the rules on page 38 of your handbook. I hope each of you will participate. Participation money will be given along with first, second, and third places in each age

category. At the last district fall meeting, our Director Jesse Pospisil stated he would add an extra $15 for first place winners in each age category. Okay, Director Jesse - we are taking you up on your offer! We thank you for your continued support of our District Two Youth Program. You are fabulous!

We will once again have a silent auction. This year’s proceeds will go towards the cost of each youth’s camp form being filled out online. The fee is $5 per person and when we add that to 100 attending, the silent auction will help tremendously. We appreciate your bringing an item or two for the silent auction and thank you in advance to all the bidders.

The SPJST statewide food drive is boxes of cereal. We challenge each lodge, adult, and youth to bring boxes of cereal. If each of you attending will bring at least one box, think of the number of people it will feed. All cereal will be donated to a local food pantry. Let’s make this challenge work and get each lodge’s picture in the Vestnik with your donation.

For each box you bring, your name will go in a drawing for a $25 gift card. I am so excited to see if we can collect well over 100 boxes. Come on District Two, let’s help feed those who are in need.

Youth members who are interested in serving as a District Two Flag Bearer, please let me know as soon as possible.

You will be asked to participate at District YAD and fall and spring meetings.

Tyson Bilbrey (Lodge 47, Seaton) and James Teague (Lodge 20, Granger) are our 2016-2017 Flag Bearers, and they have done an excellent job. Thank you, boys!

The business meeting will consist of electing adult district officers, including the flag bearers. Lodges will be recognized as will the SPJST sales agents.

I hope to see you on March 19 in Academy. The lodge is off Highway 95 to the right, just before the big bridge.

Door prizes will be awarded, and a delicious pork loin meal and all the trimmings will be furnished after the meeting for the cost of $3.

District Five Youth Spring Meeting Sunday, March 19 at Lodge 88, Houston

Dear District Five Youth, Our spring meeting will be Sunday, March 19, 2017, at Lodge 88, Houston and hosted by Lodge 142, Houston.

Lodge 142, Houston will provide lunch consisting of barbecue chicken, potato salad, and beans with dessert and drinks. It is a freewill donation for your meal.

We will recognize fraternalists of the year and life insurance sales agents and elect officers.

The youth will participate in a decorated rock contest. Registration is from 10:30 a.m. until 12 noon.

What is the decorated rock contest?

The decorated rock contest is sponsored by SPJST to encourage youth members to be creative and express their artistic talents. Youth must be present to enter and win. SPJST members entering kindergarten to high school senior are eligible.

Youth will decorate a rock that must fit in the palm of a hand. You may decorate the rock however you like. You are to bring your completed rock to the spring meeting. Use your imagination!

The rocks will be judged on creative ability, skill and design, appearance and neatness.

Lodge 84, Dallas youth Ryan Ruzicka to participate in leadership program

Congratulations to Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club member Ryan Ruzicka! Ryan was nominated by Education in Action to represent Henderson Elementary School on a 2017 Lone Star Leadership Academy program. Outstanding students are nominated for participation in this program based on demonstrated leadership ability and academic excellence.

Education in Action is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to empowering young people to be informed and active leaders in their communities. Education in Action fulfills this mission by providing the Lone Star Leadership Academy camp experience for young Texas leaders.

Lone Star Leadership Academies are weeklong (Sunday through Friday) summer camps for outstanding Texas fourth to eighth graders. Young leaders from across Texas meet in Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin/San Antonio, or Houston/Galveston for a week of fun, learning, leadership development, and visits to unique and historically significant Texas destinations.

Each day students explore notable Texas sites, learn about unique careers from professionals at sites visited, and develop their leadership abilities during leadership groups with their facilitators. Staff to student ratio is 1:10. Because of the academic nature of the program, adult facilitators are Texas teachers. In addition to improving their leadership abilities, participants gain self-confidence and independence and develop new friendships with other high-achieving students from across the state.

We will have a decorated rock contest for all the youth to participate in. Registration is from 10 to 10:30 a.m. The rock can be no bigger than the palm of your hand but can be decorated however you would like.

A brisket and sausage plate will be served for lunch at a cost of $3 per plate.

There will be games and activities along with an Easter egg hunt so be sure to bring your baskets!

In February, we visited the VA Nursing Home in Temple and handed out Valentine’s Day cards to the residents.

We visited with them as well. One of them liked my Texas Ranger hat, and we talked for several minutes. This made my day! In March, we get to have our meeting at the movie theater!

CESAT asks Czech to write letters to Senators, Representatives

The Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas (CESAT) requests that every Texas Czech writes a letter to their Senator and Representative requesting the Czech language be allowed to be taught at community colleges in Texas. It was possible to teach Czech up until 2016 when the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board removed Czech from the Academic Course Guide Manual (ACGM). Below is a sample letter.
