A Soldier’s Story: Jerome Knebel By Sarah L. Hudgins
Editor’s Note: This story by freelance writer Sarah L. Hudgins appeared in the July 20, 2016, issue of the Wharton Journal-Spectator. World War II Veteran Jerome Knebel was a 75-year member of SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje. Brother Knebel passed away on September 16, 2016. His obituary appears on page 16 of this week’s Vestnik.
Jerome Knebel, son of Antoine and Mary Knebel of Hillje, Texas, was drafted into the United States Army on April 29, 1943, at the age of 20 years. He entered active service on May 6, 1943. On November 22, Staff Sergeant Knebel traveled via United States Navy ship to the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign front as a Gunner, Battery C, 13th Field Artillery, Battalion 24th Infantry Division; arriving in Australia December 9,
