A Soldier’s Story: Jerome Knebel

Editor’s Note: This story by freelance writer Sarah L. Hudgins appeared in the July 20, 2016, issue of the Wharton Journal-Spectator. World War II Veteran Jerome Knebel was a 75-year member of SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje. Brother Knebel passed away on September 16, 2016. His obituary appears on page 16 of this week’s Vestnik.

Jerome Knebel, son of Antoine and Mary Knebel of Hillje, Texas, was drafted into the United States Army on April 29, 1943, at the age of 20 years. He entered active service on May 6, 1943. On November 22, Staff Sergeant Knebel traveled via United States Navy ship to the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign front as a Gunner, Battery C, 13th Field Artillery, Battalion 24th Infantry Division; arriving in Australia December 9,

y the time most of you receive this week’s Vestnik in the mail, the 45th President of the United States of America will have been announced. What a journey this year’s election has been, and it seems like candidates have been campaigning for a really long time.

SPJST Calendars Thanks to the members who are calling us inquiring about their 2017 calendars. The calendars are scheduled to be mailed the week of November 21. You will receive the calendar in lieu of the November 23 Vestnik. If you do not receive a calendar by December 5, please give us a call at the Home Office.

The Supreme Lodge met October 17 to 19 at the Home Office in Temple for the quarterly meeting. One of the agenda items was the 2017 budget.

Several non-contractual member benefits were looked at closely, and a few were not included in the coming year’s budget. One of these is the annual SPJST calendar. The calendar features the youth royalty court on the cover, recipes from State Youth Achievement Day, annual lodge/district dates, and information about SPJST and its products and programs.

Member households have received the calendars since 1971, and we hear from several members each year with good comments about the calendar. What are your thoughts? Do you use the calendar? Will you miss the calendar if you do not receive it next year? Please let VESTNIK

Supermoon I hear we are about to see a recordbreaking supermoon, and it will be the biggest in 70 years! This November supermoon will be when the Moon is the closest to Earth it’s been since January 1948. During the event, which will happen on the eve of November 14, the Moon will appear up to 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than an average full moon. This is the closest the Moon will get to Earth until November 25, 2034, so you really don’t want to miss this one!

Reader responds to Cindy Martin’s letter

This letter is in response to a letter

by Cindy Martin of Lodge 160, San Angelo.

My grandparents from my father’s side, immigrated to America from Czechoslovakia in the late 1800s.

They came on a sail ship. It took some two weeks to cross the Atlantic Ocean. One morning as they were being served breakfast, the ship encountered a tidal wave. Everyone aboard was thrown around, and the food got splattered all over the place.

They’re lucky their ship didn’t sink.

When I was a child, my grandmother described life for them in

Czechoslovakia. No one was allowed to own property, and when you worked, you worked for the state. The only thing you could own was one small garden and one pet. Snow was visible on the mountains all year long.

My grandmother was totally illiterate. She could not read or write and could not speak English. Apparently, girls were not allowed to go to school during her childhood.

My grandfather died before I was born. They first landed in Chicago, but eventually moved to Texas. Grandmother was fascinated at the freedom and availability of products here in America.

“Transport from Australia to New Guinea was tough,” remembers Knebel. “The Japs were bombing us nonstop. A shell came down, and me and my buddy happen to move out of its way at the right time avoiding instant death. I turned to my buddy, patted him on the shoulder and said, ‘Looks like I won’t live to see the age of 21’.

“We finally made it to Dutch-held New Guinea and was greeted by a large sign that read: Kill The ********!

Down this road marched one of the Regiments of the United States Army, Knights serving the Queen of Battles.

Twenty of their wounded in Litters were bayoneted, shot and clubbed by the Yellow Bellies, Kill The ********.

This truly was a sign of what was to come. I have a photo of that sign.

“New Guinea was tough terrain and the fighting fierce. The Japs bombed our food supply leaving us without food except for locally grown bananas. All we had left from our military food supply was hard candy and flour. Our cook would melt the hard candy and mix in flour to make hot cakes.

One day, I met up with my cousin, also in the Infantry and stationed at the end of the same island. The next day we heard Japs sneaked into their camp and killed many of our boys, including my cousin. It had been raining, and the roads were ankle-deep mud, but I walked a mile in the mud to my cousin’s camp. When I got there, the men scattered like flies. I cornered one guy, and he told me my cousin was one of the dead. One day my cousin was here, and the next day he was gone. It was like that in War.” Per 24th Infantry Division records: despite torrential rain, marshy terrain and fierce resistance from the Japanese forces, the 24th Infantry Division advanced rapidly; marching through the region for two months, crossed the en-

tirety of New Guinea.

“After we finished taking possession of New Guinea and killing all the Japs we could find, they put us on boats to invade South Philippines Islands. The boats were so full of men and supplies, there was not even a place to lay down to go to sleep.”

Per the 24th Infantry Division history: 24th drove up Leyte Valley and in heavy fighting advanced to Jaro and captured Breakneck Ridge on 12 November 1944. In Luzon, 24th Division is among the 200,000 men of the Sixth Army that recaptured Luzon from the Japanese 14th Area Army. 19 February, 24th landed on Sablayan, Mindoro, and cleared the remainder of that island.

The division moved on and landed at Mindanao 17 April 1945; cut across the island to Digos, 27 April, stormed into Davao 3 May, and cleared Libby airdrome 13 May. Although the campaign officially closed 30 June, the division continued to clear out Japanese resistance during July and August 1945. The 24th Infantry Division patrolled the region until the official surrender of Japan ended the war.

“My unit fought on three different islands; Leyte, Mindoro, and Mindanao; fighting was fierce and non-stop. The Japanese were not leaving without a fight; they would do anything to keep us from taking over their occupied position, as there was no honor in losing death in battle gave honor to Emperor Hirohito. I was Chief of Section 844, operating as a Gunner on a 105 Howitzer. We would land on the island, then shoot our way to the end of the island and back. All I got to say is I killed a lot of Japs, but our guns saved many of our soldiers. They were killing the hell out of our Infantry.

“The Japs would hold up in bunkers (aka pill boxes). Once, while shooting our way to the front line, our Lieutenant said, ‘Let’s shoot into the bunkers, and knock out those Japs.’ There were only five of us on the Howitzer when there should have been 10. I put my sight compass on it, shot a hole through the concrete wall, and killed all the Japs in-

The 2016 Lodge Incentive Guidelines will include membership program incentives and be based upon premium income generated by the lodges. The formula for calculating the Enhanced Premium Refund is:

1. $1.00 for each paid-up certificate; and 2. 2.80% of the lodge’s annual earned premium.

To receive the Enhanced Premium Refund, lodges must meet the following three-point criteria:

1. Hold regular lodge meetings in accordance with Article 50 of the SPJST By-Laws and offer a wellrounded fraternal program.

2. Return all requested paperwork on time by the due date.

3. Submit regular letters/photos to the Vestnik.

District Seven Family Fun Day this Sunday, November 13 at Lodge 107, Floresville Lodge 107, Floresville will host the District Seven Family Fun Day on Sunday, November 13, 2016, at SPJST Lodge 107, Floresville Hall, located at 1156 FM 1303 in Floresville. Registration for contests and door prizes is from 10 to 10:30 a.m. followed by a brief business meeting. Lodge 107 will provide complimentary brunch and drinks.

Each lodge is asked to bring its lodge banner for display.

Lunch A fried chicken plate will be served for $4. To order plates, members are asked to notify their lodge secretary by November 4.

Donations Lodges are asked to bring a gift ($20 value) for the prize drawing to benefit the district and a door prize ($10 value), or lodges may prefer to mail a $30 check to District Seven Treasurer Sandra Hoggard, 14 Dallari Court, San Antonio, Texas 78216. Deadline to send a check is November 4. Lodges will be recognized for their donations.

Members are encouraged to bring items for the silent auction to benefit the district fund.

The district is collecting old eyeglasses and cases and aluminim can tabs. These items may be brought to the district meeting.

The natives would trade for anything; one asked for cigarettes. We told him if he could kill the Jap sniper in the tree that kept shooting at us, we would give him a pack of cigarettes. Not only did he kill the Jap but brought back his head for proof. True story, I got the photo.

Sometimes we would sleep in a foxhole and put a mosquito net on top to keep the rats out. I was in a foxhole, with the Japs shooting at us, when a shell landed in my foxhole. I knew I was dead, but the fuse was bad, and it did not go off.

Just wasn’t my time to go.

“I had another close call while firing my Howitzer; the shell was wet and it exploded almost as soon as it left the chamber. I lost all hearing in one ear and sight in one eye, but I survived. Our guns were plumb wore out, and we could not determine the range to make an accurate hit. We had been promised new guns, but the war was over before they could deliver new ones. I believe, had we stayed longer, we would have

gotten them.

“I saw and was in a lot of combat; everyday, all day long. I did nothing but walk with my Howitzer and shoot Japs.

It was a big gun; when that gun went off, you heard it and felt the ground shake.We had been put through the mill, and I would not want to go through that again. My buddy took photos of all the combat we saw, and he sent me copies. I got ‘em and anyone that wants to see real combat come by and look at the pictures, including the one of the Jap’s head. I visited the real Hell while in the Army.”

Knebel departed the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign front. He was awarded The Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star Medal, and World War II Victory Medal for his service.

Jerome headed home to Hillje, Texas, where he worked in a small store. His doctor recommended Jerome work on the farm instead, as the outside work would be better for his nerves.

Jerome married Ella Mae Stavinoha; they have been married for 66 years and continue to live in Hillje on his family’s farm. They have four children, 12 grandchildren, and six great-grandchil-

dren. Mr. Jerome Knebel is 92 years old and continues to suffer from ear and eye injuries acquired during his military service.

Commentary by freelance writer Sarah L. Hudgins: War is Hell and men like Mr. Jerome Knebel, who faced dayto-day combat to protect their country, are the most honorable men alive. It was a hard job, but they did it. They saw their buddies and their own family members killed, but they never gave up; fighting until the enemy was no more.

Thank you, Mr. Jerome Knebel, for your service to our Country, and God bless you for all you endured to insure our freedom and the freedom of others.

Lodge 8, Weimar plans Nov. 28 holiday social

Lodge 8, Weimar met for its monthly meeting on Monday, October 24, 2016, at Oakridge Smokehouse Restaurant in Schulenburg, Texas.

Business discussed included donating to the food pantry in Schulenburg.

Members decided to each give a personal monetary amount and bring it to the November 28 holiday social in lieu of Christmas gift giving to each other.

A memorial service was held remembering Eugene Veselka and Milady Ermis.

Happy birthdays were wished to George Janik and Luther Lorfing. Happy anniversary wishes were shared to Erline and George Janik.

Holiday Social—November 28 The next meeting will be Lodge 8, Weimar’s annual holiday social at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, November 28 at Oakridge Smokehouse Restaurant in Schulenburg. The meal at 5:30 p.m.

We want to send get well wishes to Encarnacion Castillo. Mr. Castillo had a heart attack. He and his wife Bea do the hamburgers at the polka dances.

That is why the kitchen has not been open. Many of the dance patrons have inquired about you and send their get well wishes also.

Home Office Staff Celebrate Halloween

Czech Heritage Month Czech has come and gone. The year is almost gone. Here I am still having problems with my computer. You would think I live in the desert or something. Why is it so hard to get good affordable internet? Last month, I tried to send in my report, and I got it right back. I mailed it with some pictures, but I don’t know where it went. So much for that.

The trustees are working hard to keep the hall in good condition.

Lodge 35, Elk meets Nov. 9

President Randy Pavelka called the SPJST Lodge 35, Elk and Elk Hall, Inc. meetings to order on Wednesday, October 12, 2016, at 7:02 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by guests and members. On the sick list was Rebecca Pavelka. We wish her a speedy recovery.

Secretary Carla Pavelka read the minutes from the September 14 meeting, and with no corrections, they were approved as read. Treasurer Barbara Pavelka gave her report, and with no correction, it was also approved as read. Floor Chairman Gene Pavelka gave his report, and Bar Chairman Randy Pavelka gave his report for the month.

Janie and Richard Brewer audited the books, and they said the books were in excellent order. Fred Kubitza made a motion to accept the books, and Walter Kubitza seconded the motion. The motion carried, and the books were accepted.

Richard and Janie Brewer thanked the lodge for the use of the hall to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.

Our guests were District Three Director John and Diana Engelke. We are always glad for them to come and sit in on our meetings. They brought some door prizes, and we had some lucky winners.

We had 13 members present and two guests this month.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:30 p.m.

Next Meeting—November 9 Our next lodge meeting will be Wednesday, November 9 at about 7:15 p.m. after the SPJST Pavelka Cemetery Association Meeting. Anyone with an SPJST insurance certificate or who has relatives buried there in the SPJST Pavelka Cemetery Association is welcome to come to the meeting at 7 p.m.

Lodge 40 El Campo-Hillje needs your help

Hello, Members, and Greetings from SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje!

This letter is in reference to our second annual raffle to raise funds to maintain, repair, and update our lodge building. With the funds raised from last year’s raffle, we were able to complete the lights, rewire the inside of the building, and finish the event lights for the outside security of the building. We also repaired and maintained the building as needed. This was accomplished - thanks to your support and donation

to the raffle last year.

Funds are down in the lodge’s account, and we cannot rely exclusively on the annual SPJST stipend and the few contracted rentals to financially support the lodge and the building.

With every building, there are monthly and annual costs, repairs, and continued updates to maintain. We hoped to raise enough last year to purchase liability insurance, but that wasn’t possible. So our struggle continues.

With that being said, we will be hosting a prize drawing. For Lodge 40 to succeed and to keep the building, we need your support. If any member of the lodge or anyone you know would like to support the project, please contact Raffle Chairman Norma at 979637-1507.

The drawing will be held Sunday, December 11, 2016, after the monthly meeting which begins at 1 p.m. This will be family day at the lodge so we invite all members to attend. Lodge 49, Rowena sets Dec. 4 Christmas party

SPJST Lodge 49, Rowena held its quarterly meeting on Wednesday, November 2, 2016, at the lodge hall beginning at 7 p.m. Ten members were present.

Roll call of officers showed Brad Teplicek absent.

The minutes were read and approved. The treasurer’s report was read and approved.

FAC Ana Fuentes reported that the 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive began October 1. Veterans Day is November 11 - remember the veterans on this day.

The Home Office Christmas Open House will be Monday, December 5.

Please plan to attend if can.

ENC (Brad Teplicek) had no report, and By-Law (Beverly Teplicek) had no report.

Rest Home Director Billy Rollwitz stated they had the dedication at the Taylor Senior Living Center with many in attendance. Please go visit when you are in the area if possible. Everything else is going good.

District Four Director Billy Rollwitz reported that a lot of changes and budget cuts are coming our way. There will not be a statewide awards banquet like in years past. Every district will hold their own banquet. Instead of receiving your plaque for the gold, silver, etc. awards, you can receive a certificate. It will be up to the individual lodges. There will be a 2017 calendar mailed to everyone like always, but the next year, it will possibly be by request only. Lodges usually receive 2.8 percent of the lodge’s annual earned premium; however, it will be cut down by .8 percent to 2 percent.

Youth Leader Becky Wood reported that the youth made cards for hospitalized children for their Make a Difference Day project. They are planning a trip for sometime in January to go to the indoor trampoline place in Fort Worth. They had a lock-in at the hall in August. They all had fun playing games and watching movies.

Hall Committee had no report.

Under new business, new applicants were read and approved. The hall is rented for December 17 for a family Christmas party and in January for a family reunion.

It will be Sunday, December 4 at 4 p.m. with the catered meal being served at 6 p.m. Laura Pospichal will get with Melanie for invites as our annual mailout. It was discussed to bring a box of Kleenex as a service project to be given to our local nursing homes.

Nancy Schwertner volunteered to get the door prizes, and Billy Rollwitz volunteered to get the drinks/spirits.

Two bills were presented - $56.07 from Sylvia Rollwitz for getting the convention picture framed and $85.36 from Nancy Schwertner for spraying around the hall. Both were approved and will be paid.

Lodge 54, West Christmas party

Dear Members, SPJST Lodge 54, West will hosts its annual Christmas party on Sunday, December 4, 2016, at Tours Hall, located at 301 St. Martin Church Road in West, Texas 76691 on Sunday, December 4, 2016. The party begins with social hour at 3 p.m. The West High Junior Historian Dancers will perform at 3:30 p.m. followed by a fried chicken dinner that will be served at 4:30 p.m. Santa will visit at 5:30 p.m. Adult and children cash door prizes will be awarded.

Each SPJST family is asked to bring a dessert for dinner. Meal and refreshments will be provided by Lodge 54.

Lodge 66, Waco welcomes new members

The meeting of SPJST Lodge 66, Waco was called to order by President John Engelke on Monday, October 24, 2016, at St. Paul’s Church at 6 p.m. with all officers present. There were eight members present.

Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and motto.

Secretary Sister Dana McAdams read the minutes of the September 26 meeting, and they were approved as read.

Sister Diana Engelke received a thank you note from Roy Kerr of Mannaworks thanking Lodge 66 for the $100 donation. She also received a thank you note from Kathy Schmedhorst of St. Paul’s Church thanking Lodge 66 for the $500 donation to St. Paul’s Fixerupper.

Sister Dorothy Veselka of the Entertainment Committee reported that for the November 21 meeting, we will have sausage, cheese, crackers, chips, dessert, and tea brought by members.

Sister Dorothy Veselka of the Cheer and Condolence Committee reported she sent sympathy cards to Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Pratha and Mr. and Mrs. William Nors on the death of their brother Ernest Nors and to Kay Lynn Kovar on the death of her father Leslie Mach. May they rest in peace.

The meeting of SPJST Lodge 80, Holland was called to order by President Rita Spinn on Saturday, October 1, 2016, at 4:15 p.m.

Membership stood for the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for the departed members.

All officers were present. Helen Pajestka was absent from the board of directors. Sales agent absent was Vicki Slye.

Motion was made by Dan Hendrix and seconded by Risa Pajestka to accept the minutes of the September meeting. Motion carried.

District Four Director Billy Rollwitz of Lodge 49, Rowena is pictured by a monument that he proudly helped make into a reality at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rowena, Texas. It was dedicated to St. Joseph’s Veterans on September 2, 2017. Director Rollwitz served in the 980 Engineering Battalion in the United States Army. He was active duty for six years and also in the Army Reserves. He later served for four years as the 21st District State Commander for the American Legion.

Lodge 180 Burleson plans Dec. 3 holiday dinner

The Lodge 180, Burleson meeting was held at the Burleson Police Department in the Community Center room with all of the officers present as well as other members.

The meeting was brought to order

by President Nancy Kelly with Logan Almonte leading us in the Pledge of Alliance. Logan is in the process of becoming a new junior member of our lodge, and we all extend to him a welcome. Following the Pledge, a moment of silent prayer was offered for all in need.

Secretary Carmon Babina read the minutes from the previous meeting which were approved as read. Treasurer Rhonda Hurtik presented the financial report, and it was accepted as well.

I received some communications from the Home Office, and these were presented to the lodge. Verna Mason and grandson Logan were presented to the lodge as new members. Their paperwork is in the process of being

Plans for the Christmas party were made. The party will be held on Thursday, December 1 at the Cannery Kitchen, 314 East Alamo Street in Brenham from 7 to 9 p.m. A free meal will be served for members. The Home Office will send out invitations, and members are asked to reply as to how many will attend so the Cannery Kitchen will know how many to pre-

Verna’s daughters Sandy Almonte and Liana Scott are becoming social members of our lodge at this time with plans on becoming full-fledged members at a later date.

It was discussed about the initiation and since the lodge has no “hazing” per se, we talked about another fraternal organization that initiates all new members with having to ride a goat.

Everyone found this to be amusing so we may adopt this as our initiation for future members!

We discussed cleaning out two storage units that were being utilized by Lodge 180. President Milton Peterson from Lodge 6, Cottonwood came and reaped from the contents of the storage units. When he and his granddaughter Kim (and another gentleman whom I am sorry that I do not recall his name) left, they had their van loaded to the top without another spare inch to be had. They were able to glean well over $1,500 of value in goods donated to their lodge. We hope that they are going to enjoy their “almost new” goods.

was handled at the same time with the selection of Nancy Kelly as fraternalist of the year. I find both of these events as humbling and feel honored that Lodge 180 has put trust and faith in me.

Following adjournment of the meeting, we journeyed to Olive Garden and found out that we would have a 35-minute wait. With so many hungry people, we quickly changed plans and moved to El Fenix for dinner. We were all able to move without difficulty and soon our thirst and food needs were satisfied.

Following dinner, I was given a very pretty birthday cake, and everyone sang “Happy Birthday” to me, which I enjoyed very much. I will tell you that the cake presented to me was the largest medium-sized cake that I have ever seen. It was absolutely delicious and enjoyed by all. I just wish that all of the November birthday people could have shared with me.

A meeting for December has not been planned as we are having our annual Christmas dinner/party. In the event that one is needed, all people will be contacted either by phone or email.

The January meeting will take place the first Tuesday of the month, which will be January 3, 2017, at 6 p.m., at the Burleson Police Department Building, 1161 S.W. Wilshire in Burleson. We look forward to seeing you there.

Lodge 204 Stephenville members: please volunteer to serve

It has been a long time since I have written anything so I will start by saying that this has not been a very good year for the Kneschk family. First, Grace had a stroke in December 2015 then had a urinary tract infection. She spent a week in the hospital and six weeks in rehab. A month later, she had congestive heart failure and spent a week in the hospital and two weeks in rehab. She is now home and able to get around with a little help from me.

I have been told that I have macular degeneration, and it is only a matter of time when my eyesight will get worse.

So having said all of that, about all I can say is if no one comes forward to accept lodge officer positions then Lodge 204, Stephenville will cease to be as of January 1, 2017, and you members may need to transfer to other lodges. It has been a great 58 somewhat years with the parties, dances, and all of the friends all over Texas. It has been fun, but all good things come to an end. When your children start retiring, maybe it is time to get in that rocking chair and watch the world go by. So long, and as sometimes it’s said, “See you in the funny paper.” Keep smiling!

Chinaberry Trees

I have fond memories of Chinaberry trees as a little boy we lived in a house that had a huge Chinaberry in the backyard it had a trunk the size of an oak tree people always remarked that they had never seen one that large it was a landmark

of course as kids we played with the berries when new they were hard as rocks and perfect for chunking at sisters or pets or yellow jackets

when the berries got old, they would turn yellow and grow soft and mushy and then wrinkled we made mud pies and used the berries for decoration we used them to make artwork in the dirt the first happy faces mamma always cautioned us not to eat the Chinaberries they were poisonous she would tell us stories of what would happen we feared for our lives

then we had a Chinaberry tree next to the house which allowed us to climb up and stretching over precariously get on the roof of the house which took some daring but you know kids never afraid of anything that Chinaberry was our launch pad to new heights of exploration

so I have great memories of Chinaberry trees even the name was exotic to us we imagined distant lands far beyond our sheltered world

what memories flood the mind looking back on childhood memories raining down like berries from Chinaberry trees. ~ d.knape —SPJST—

Haleigh is in fifth grade at Huebner Elementary School. She plays basketball and volleyball.

She enjoys reading, traveling to new places, and spending time with family. Haleigh also enjoys drawing and designing clothes and hopes to be a fashion designer one day.

Lodge 142, Houston welcomes Kyle Herrington, age 16, to the youth club. He is the son of Kerry Herrington and Tracy Herrington. His sister is Amanda, and his brother is James.

Kyle is in the 10th grade and plays football for Atascocita High School near Humble, Texas, which takes up most of his time. He is planning to attend camp next year and serve as a Leader-in-Training (LIT).

Lodge 142, Houston welcomes Jolin Havies, age six, to the youth club. She is the daughter of Julie Piedra and Dareck Havies. She has a younger brother, Joseph.

Jolin is in first grade at Raymond Academy in the Aldine School District. She is a cheerleader for the junior Texans football team. She loves Frozen, swimming, learning to ride a bike, playing in Grandma Catherine’s Barbie town, and SPJST activities—especially arts and crafts.

Jolin plans to attend camp and enter Youth Achievement Day (YAD) like her mother and aunts did.

Lodge 142, Houston welcomes Aiden Hermis, age seven, to the youth club. Aiden is the son of Jason and Margaret Hermis and grandson of Dennis and Elizabeth Hermis, all members of Lodge 142. He is a fourth generation SPJST member. His younger brother is Jonathan.

Aiden is in first grade at Willow Creek Elementary School in Tomball, Texas, where he is first grade class leader. He plays baseball and basketball and enjoys riding his bike. Aiden loves school, swimming, going on vacation, and playing with friends, and he especially loves going out to eat Mexican food. Aiden is helpful and inquisitive and adds interactive talk at our youth club meetings. He hopes to one day serve as an officer.

Lorraine Ethlyn Gant, 85 of El Campo, passed away on October 30, 2016. She was born on November 8, 1930, in El Campo to the late Louis and Lydia Hubenak Dornak.

She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje, and Country Squares.

Lorraine Gant Visitation was Thursday, November 3 from 2 to 7 p.m. at Triska Funeral Home.

Catholic Daughter rosary was held on Friday, November 4 at 9:30 a.m. with funeral service following at 10 a.m. at St. Philip Catholic Church with Reverend Michael Rother officiating.

She is survived by husband Bill Gant of El Campo; daughter Gayle Browning and husband Bill of Needville; son Callen Pasak and wife Rosalyn of Richmond; grandchildren David Browning and wife Emily, Eric Browning and wife Rita, Jennifer Orta and husband Scott, and Dale Garner; and great-grandchildren Scarlett Browning, Austin Orta, Ember Orta, Lily Garner, and Jameson Garner.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and first husband Daniel J. Pasak.

Memorials in her memory may be made to St. Philip Catholic Church or Houston Hospice-El Campo.

In Memory of Jerome Knebel

Jerome 'Slick' Knebel, age 92, of Hillje, passed away September 16, 2016.

He was born December 16, 1923, in Wharton County to the late Anton and Mary Knebel.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje. He was also a member of American Legion, VFW, and DAV. At the age of 20, he enlisted in the army and was in World War II as Staff Sergeant. He was awarded many metals including two bronze stars.

After the war, Jerome, better known as Slick, resided in Hillje where he purchased the family farm and continued farm operations. Slick enjoyed spending time with family and friends at deer camp cooking, hunting, and enjoying a cold one.

He is survived by his loving wife Ella Mae Stavinoha Knebel; daughters Susan Gerla and husband Lawrence, Barbara Andel and husband Michael, and Betty Jo Staff and husband Dale; son Jerome Knebel and wife Karen; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and numerous sister and brothers-in-law.

Jerome was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Fred, Richard, and Larry Knebel; and sister-in-law Gladys Knebel.

Visitation was from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, September 18 at Triska Funeral Home. Rosary was recited at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, September 19 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church. Funeral mass immediately followed at 10 a.m. with Reverend Kirby Hlavaty.

Burial followed at St. Andrew’s Cemetery.

Pallbearers were all the grandsons.

Honorary pallbearers were the grandchildren and great-grandchildren R.J. Strnadel, Mike Prasek, Johnnie Veselka, Marvin Trochta, Raymond Poncik, and Michael Holub, and Louise Volunteer Fire Department.

Memorial donations in memory of Jerome may be made to St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, Louise Volunteer Fire Department, VFW, DAV, or American Legion.

Naše nadace se připravuje k další práci Jan Vaculík

Pravidelná čtvrtletní schůze České vzdělávací nadace státu Texasu se konala v areálu Severotexaské university v Dentonu, Tx. při příležitosti uvedení do úřadu nového deana hudební

fakulty Dra. Johna W. Richmonda dne 8. září 2016 v budově hudební fakulty za pěkného podzimního počasí a hojné účasti ředitelů a členů. Universita poskytla pěkné pohoštění, klobásní ky, koláče a nápoje, aby se někteří účastníci, kteří měli dlouhou cestu do Dentonu a časně vstávali, mohli posilnit k delší schůzi.

President nadace Woody Smith zahájil schůzi, pozdravil přítomné a poděkoval za pohostinství university a možnost uspořádání schůze. Složili

jsme přísahu americké vlajce a republice, pro kterou stojí. Představen byl nový člen nadace Dr. Wayne Shandera, který pracuje jako lékařský výzkumník. Hodně řaditelů chybělo pro omluvitelné příčiny, někteří byli mimo stát Texas v jiných zemích či v Evropě, chyběl zejména náš předseda Sboru ředitelů Clinton Machánn, který se podrobil vážné operaci a nyní se uzdravuje v péči své manželky.

This beautiful, deep red ornament with the inscription, “Happy Birthday, Jesus” reminds us that we celebrate Christmas because it is the birthday of Jesus Christ. This ornament is a must for every family’s Christmas tree. The tiny baby, asleep on the hay, emphasizes to everyone

“For unto you is born today in the city of David a Savior which is Christ the Lord”. A favorite ornament of 2016 is the Open Bible, depicting Bethlehem and the star that shone over the manger the night Jesus was born. The inscription is a quote from the second chapter of Luke, which tells the story of the birth of Jesus Christ. During the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season, with its shopping, parties, programs and other activities, this ornament helps to ground us as we remember the true meaning of Christmas. It is almost impossible to find a shell so rich in symbolism as the sand dollar. The sand dollar represents the story of the birth, crucifixion, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. On the top part of the shell, you can clearly see in the center a star, which represents the Star of Bethlehem that led the Wise Men to the manger where Christ was born.

Around it is the outline of the Easter lily, a sign of Our Lord’s Resurrection.

At the edges of the star are four holes, and in the center is another hole.

When you turn the sand dollar over, you will find an outline of the poinsettia, the Christmas flower. If you break open the sand dollar, five “doves” emerge – the doves of the peace and joy of Christmas. Every time one opens a sand dollar, he will always find five doves, never more or less.

spolupráce bude úspěšná a dosáhneme úspěchu při práci na udržení naší hudební kultury. Na upomínku obdržel od nadace knihu.

Dále dostal slovo Dr. Alan C. Klaas, který řídí rozvoj hudební katedry a snaží se získat protředky pro uspořádání hudební katedry ve prospěch naší veřejnosti. Jako praktický člověk vysvětlil, že universita potřebuje podporu i po finanční stránce a že nadace by mohla přispět významně dostatečnou částkou k udržení katedry do budoucnosti.

Pěkně nám přednesl částku peněz, kterou potřebuje ke své práci. Organisuje práci pro fakultu hudebního dědictví, aby naši krajané měli možnost přispívat peníze na naši kulturu a hudbu. Je důležité, abyhom získali pod poru finančně zabezpečených lidí, kteří by požadavek financí splnili.

Dr. Richmond zdůrazil, že je nutno zachovat hudbu a kulturu a získat mládež na koncerty klasické hudby a předpověděl, že činnost hudebního

střediska se rozšíří až do Nebraky.

President nadace Smith poděkoval pánům za povzbudivá slova a účast na naší schůzi a očekává, že naše spolupráce přinese dobré výsledky v budoucnosti.

Zápis z poslední schůze byl schválen tak, jak byl čten. Naše finanční tajemnice Cindy Belknap podala pěknou zprávu a udržuje naše peníze v dobrém stavu. jako samostatný bod programu. Organisace, které pořádají sbírky na podporu jazyka, hudby a kultury a jsou uznány státem jako nevýdělečná vzdělavatelská organisace, mají vyvíjet činnost podle určitých pravidel.

Musí mít stanoven důvod k činnosti, stanovy a procedúry, které mají přispět k zákonnému přijmu příspěvků. Ve stanovách je nutno určit druhy příspěvků, na příklad hotovost, akcie, domy, osobní majetek, práva na olej, plyn a minerály, životní pojistka a jiné podobné prostředky, naše nadace může být uvedena jako nabyvatel užitku po smrti dárce, rovněž závěti a dary lze přijmout.

Je velmi důležité si uvědomit, že někteří lidé zajímající se o práci naší nadace si chtějí přečíst stanovy, pravidla a postup práce naší nadace dříve, než se stanou členy. Pokud dokumenty nejsou podle jejich přání anebo vyjadřují nějakou úchylku, pak je těžko očeávat, že lidé se stanou členy nadace. Starší členové, kteří byli

schopni stanovy upravit, již odešli na věčný odpočinek.

Předseda Sboru ředitelů Clinton Machann poslal písemnou zprávu o stavu Hlavinkova stipendia na Texaské A and M universitě v College Station, TX. Zdůraznil, že je nutno si vzpome nout na bývalé studenty.- aggies a podpořit jejich zájem o podporu Hlavinkova stipendia. Pochodující kapela fotbalového mužstva je výbornou ukázkou tradice a kadeti v College Station mají boty, které byly vyrobeny na počátku naším emigrantem Josefem Holíkem.

Upozornil na skutečnost, že současný student je Jan Beneš, který se vede velmi dobře. Obyčejně studuje dva roky a získá doktorát z angličtiny a amerických studií.. Potřebujeme jenom lepší finanční podporu, aby studenti z moravských universit v Brně a v Olomouci mohli nerušeně pokračovat ve studiu. 76110. Každý příspěvek je považován za úlevu na daních, proto naše nadace je uznána státem jako nevýdělečná a vzdělávací organisace ve státě Texasu.

Stav vyučování češtiny na Texaské universitě v Austinu, Tx. pokračuje i nadále bez hlavního učitele češtiny, jak se počítalo na začátku ustanovení stolice. Mladí učitelé se střídají a mají dobrý úspěch při volbě témat a předmětů. Chystají uspořádání dějepisu Pražského jara 1968 a vyučování češtiny pomocí počítače.

Mládež v nadaci se baví prací na oběžníku a pod redaktorstvím Lynette Urbanovské má nyní oběžník vysokou úroveň. Nastala však otázka, jakým způsobem posílat oběžník členům anebo zájemcům o naši nadaci, když poštovné je velmi vysoké. Poměrně lacino je možno posílat oběžník počítačem, ale ne všichni starší členové a členky mají počítač anebo si nedovedou nastavit naši webstránku. Toto je námět, který potřebuje nějaké řešení, aby zprávy o činnosti naší nadace byly oznámeny a známy široké veřejnosti Když nadace bude žádat o pomoc při sbírce na hudební katedru v Severotexaské universitě anebo doplnit Hlavinkovo stipendium v College Station, Tx., pak je nutno veškeré informace shromáždit a uveřejnit, aby byla veřejnost pravdivě a správně informována o úmyslech nadace. Mnohdy se šíří ve veřejnosti falešné a škodlivé informace o nadaci anebo členu nadace, zejména o údajných milionech dolarů ve vlastnictví nadace, avšak podobné poškozování pověsti není přijatelné.

V jednom bodu diskuse se jednalo o jménu nadace. Dosavadní jméno je Česká vzdělávací nadace státu Texasu, při čemž většina původních přistěhovalců, asi 85 procent, přišla z Lašska, Valašska a pak z Moravy a asi 15 procent přistěhovalců přišlo z Čech. Po více než šesti generacích je správné, aby se naši krajané nazývali Texané moravského původu, pokud jejich předci přišli z některé části Moravy anebo Texané českého původu, pokud byli předci z Čech. Případný příklad můžeme uvést, že Texan narozený v Texasu, nebude se nazývat Oklahoman, stejně tak se nemůže Texan z předků narozených na Moravě stát v Texasu Čechem.

Někdo se dopustil veliké chyby, když členy naší moravské veřejnosti v Texasu nazval nesprávně Čechy, když jsou většinou Moravané, přesněji La-

chové nebo Valachové.

S tím souvisela otázka názvu nadace, máme mít Moravskou vzdělávací nadaci, protože většina našich lidí v Texasu jsou moravského původu, většina členů a ředitelů jsou po předcích Moravané? Otázka je: kdo způsobil, že menšina česká převzala působení většiny moravské pod svým jménem a většina moravká zmizela z texaského veřejného života mezi krajany? Změna jména by mohla přiblížit veřejnosti činnost nadace a naznačit nový postoj členů nadace k původu a práci nadace. Správný vztah naší veřejnosti by se mohl také změnit lepšímu a nadace by moha být všestranně podporována v záslužné činnosti. Název Moravsko-česká vzdělávací nadace státu Texasu by zněla mnohem pravdivěji a odpovídala by také dějinné skutečnosti našeho krajanského života.

Obnova pravdivého postavení našich národností by mohla vést ke správnému postavení naší veřejnosti k obživení národní hrdosti našich krajanů v Texasu. Tyto okolnosti by pak prospěly při vyhlašování sbírky na potřebná stipendia a finanční podporu veřejně prospěšných institucí. Naše nadace má dostatečně úspěšnou práci v minulosti a tři dosavadní úspěchy jsou toho důkazem. Naše nadace se připravuje na další úspěšnou činnost a těšíme se na podporu veřejnosti.

Staňte se členy nadace a podpořte nadaci různou formou hodnot, které je možno proměnit na finanční podporu naší práce. Příští generace ocení naši snahu.

Czech Heritage Society meets this Saturday in Gonzales

On Saturday, November 12, 2016, the Gonzales Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas is hosting the fall state meeting at First Lutheran Church of Gonzales Activity Center.

Registration starts at 8 a.m. with opening ceremonies at 8:30 a.m. A membership/business meeting will start at 9:30 a.m. A noon meal will be served.

Featured speaker George Kubalka will speak about Czech bands. There will be vendor booths, displays, silent auction, and genealogy library available.

It is free of charge and open to the public.

“The Accidental Hero” comes to College Station

The George Bush Presidential Library and Museum in College Station is welcoming Patrick Dewane to Rudder Theatre on Friday, November 18 at 7 p.m. to perform his one-man show called “The Accidental Hero.”

As we look ahead to the 75th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Patrick Dewane presents the dramatic retelling of the story of his grandfather, Matt Konop. Konop was raised on a family farm outside a small

town in rural Wisconsin, speaking Czech as his first language. Konop found himself fighting in Europe in World War II, eventually becoming a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army. When he returned after the war, he never spoke of his war experiences, not even when asked by his grandchildren many years later. When he died in 1983, his family assumed Konop’s stories of war were buried with him.

However, 20 years later his unpublished memoirs were found in a box in a basement along with a treasure trove of pictures, videos, and other memorabilia. Unbeknownst to his family, Konop had spent some of his latter years writing his war stories for posterity. Through a mix of dramatic presentation, old photos, and rare World War II film footage shot with a home movie camera, Dewayne created a

eterans Day, once known as Armistice Day, was first celebrated on November 11, 1919, the anniversary of the end of World War I. In 1928, the United States Congress passed a resolution for Armistice Day to be an annual observation, and by 1938, the day became a national holiday.

Differing from Memorial Day in May, Armistice Day, which would be renamed Veterans Day in 1954 under President Dwight Eisenhower, pays tribute to veterans who survived various wars.

Memorial Day commemorates those veterans who lost their lives.

Americans celebrate Veterans Day, while residents of Great Britain, Canada, and Australia celebrate Remembrance Day. Those who want to learn more about Veterans Day can consider the following facts.

• According to the American Community Survey, there were 19.3 million military veterans in the United States in 2014. Of those, 1.6 million were female.

• California, Texas, and Florida comprise the states with the largest number of veterans, equalling one million or more.

• Veterans consist of people who served in the military. This includes the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard. Veterans serve in times of war and peace.

• The word “veteran” comes from the Old English language and means “old, experienced soldier.” The first use of the word was documented in 1789.

• Although many veterans are working, and the average annual income of male veterans is $37,000, some veterans continue to be unemployed. According to

data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the overall unemployment rate for veterans rose to 7.6 percent in January 2013. The unemployment rate of post-9/11 veterans or those who participated in the Gulf War reached 6.2 percent.

• Upon retiring or being discharged, veterans may need help acclimating to life outside the military. The Department of Veterans Affairs says about 30 percent of Vietnam War veterans have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD.

• Between 1971 and 1977, Veterans Day was celebrated on the fourth Monday in October. It was changed back to its original date, November 11, in 1975 when President Gerald Ford signed bill S.331 into law. The change went into effect beginning in 1978.

• An American soldier was buried at the national cemetery in Arlington on November 11, 1921. His identity was unknown, and the gravesite is known as the “Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.” Each year on Veterans Day, the president or another high-ranking member of the government places a wreath on the grave. A guard from the Society of the Honor Guard stands watch over the grave.

Veterans Day occurs each year on November 11, marking the end of World War I. The day has evolved into a celebration and remembrance of the heroism of America’s brave soldiers.
